Steam Illuminations is an incredible light show on and in a steam train, consisting of thousands of coloured LED lights and LED wristbands, creating a kaleidoscope of different colours and flashing patterns. This makes the steam train look magical both inside and out! The new iPhone 15 has been available since late September and along with the new IOS 17 software update there are some interesting new changes available including, amongst many other new features, being able to use your phone as a nightstand clock, drop the “Hey” from “Hey Siri” so now it will just be ”Siri” followed by the command, and the noise isolation feature to eliminate background noise during a phone call, great for busy, noisy places like airports and train stations. IOS 17 is not just available for the new iPhone 15 but for all iPhones after the Xr, so the iPhone 8, 7 and 6 will not get the new update. If you are considering updating your iPhone to something refurbished consider the 12, 13 or 14. There are always many to choose from and I am happy to advise.

Owl-O-Ween at Hawk Conservancy Trust

Prepare yourself and your little ones for a wickedly spook-tacular family evening this Halloween. You can enjoy some ghostly storytelling and marvel at our owls as they put on a beautiful flying display against the backdrop of our moonlit grounds. There'll be an opportunity to independently explore our grounds and see our birds in their homes, following spooky moonlit trails between the two flying displays of the evening.

We'll introduce you to a range of mystical owls from our native Barn Owls to larger species such as Great Grey Owls and a Verreaux's Eagle-Owl! Hi I'm Maia, I have been a florist for 7 years. I trained in Convent Garden, London also worked in London designing flowers for high end hotels. 5 years ago I relocated to Hampshire and opened my own shop in the small village of Selbourne. I have loved doing floristry for the community there, but as the business grew we needed a bigger premises to showcase our flowers and my passion for interior design so we opened our NEW shop on Lavant Street in Petersfield.

Autumn Nature Explorer Day

A day of activities for 7–12-year-olds looking at signs of Autumn in the grounds of our museum through scavenger hunts, sensory activities, games and crafts.

This session can count towards the ‘Discover’ and ‘Explore’ elements of the John Muir Discovery Award which can then be completed during the coming academic year through additional sessions which will cover the ‘Conserve’ and ‘Share’ elements. Tickets £30 per child per day - Lunch and snacks not includedplease bring a packed lunch and a water bottle!

This day will be led by our Learning Manager and a member of the Learning team. Learning staff have enhanced DBS certificates and the Learning Manager has an Outdoor First Aid qualification.

All activities will take place within the grounds of the museum. A consent form will be emailed in advance which must be completed and returned in advance of the day.

We at the Petersfield Bowling & Snooker Club in St Peter’s Road are happy to announce that we are now making a positive contribution to mitigating the climate crisis with the installation of twenty one solar panels. Combined with a battery storage system we expect to at least halve our electricity demands from the National Grid, and hopefully even more than that in future years.

Earlier this year

EHDC Community Grants Team accepted our application for a grant towards the cost of the Solar PV System and very generously awarded the sum of £10,000 towards the total £19,700 cost.

Since the installation was completed in July this year, we have generated 1.36 Megawatts of electricity from the solar panels which equates to a saving of 281 kg of CO2 emissions, or the equivalent of 17 trees being planted. This information is provided by the constant monitoring of the system by an App so that we can get a daily overview of how our system is performing.

It’s a shame that the Summer sun went into hiding just as we went “live” but still, with ever increasing fuel costs, we have calculated that the initial outlay should be recovered in about four to five years. The benefit to the environment is in many ways, the greater achievement, our carbon footprint is reduced as is our demand from fossil fuel generated power.

So “Thank you” EHDC for your contribution towards this project – I would urge any other community groups in a similar situation to investigate the community grants available from our local government bodies.

Tasty Pumpkin Muffins

MAKES 12 MUFFINS

INGREDIENTS

• 220g plain flour

• 1&1/2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

• 50g light brown sugar

• 100g caster sugar

• 210g pumpkin purée (cooked and mashed. Alternatively canned purée can be used)

• 2 teaspoons baking powder

• 2 large eggs (beaten)

• 125g salted butter, melted

• pinch of salt

METHOD

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Take a muffin tray and line with 12 cases. Mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and both sugars together in a large bowl. Break up any lumps of brown sugar by rubbing them between your fingers.

Wisk the beaten eggs and pumpkin purée together until well mixed. Add the dry mix of flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Fold the ingredients into the mixture until they are well mixed. Divide the mix between the 12 muffin cases and sprinkle with lightly pre-roasted (small) pumpkin seeds as decoration if desired.

Bake for 12-15 mins until golden and risen. Skewer the muffins, if the inserted skewer comes out clean the muffins are ready. Pop onto a wire rack to cool completely. The muffins keep for three days in an airtight container.

This blocks air circulation and provides ideal conditions for this fungal disease to attack the grass plants.

Proper autumn maintenance will help protect your lawn from damage. One of the first things to do is to remove any fallen leaves and moss from your lawn. These can trap moisture, block out light, and lead to the development of fungal diseases that kill the grass. Fertilising in the autumn will help to strengthen the grass and make it more resilient to cold temperatures and the rigours of darker, wetter days. Aerating the soil will also help to relieve compaction, reduce waterlogging, and ensure that water and oxygen can reach the roots of the grass.

Proper winter lawn maintenance not only protects the lawn from damage caused by winter weather, but it also promotes healthy

growth in the spring. A well-cared-for lawn in the winter will be better equipped to bounce back in the spring and recover more quickly from any damage that may have occurred due to poor weather. Moss is a common problem in lawns, especially during the winter months. Moss not only makes your lawn look unsightly, but it can also choke out the grass, making it difficult for it to grow. Moss thrives in damp, shady areas of the lawn, and if left untreated, it can quickly take over.

One of the most effective ways to control moss in your lawn is by using moss control treatments. Iron is a natural moss killer, and when applied to the lawn, it will help to dehydrate the moss and prevent it from becoming dominant. Iron also helps to harden the grass, making it more resistant to disease attack. The iron treatment will penetrate the moss and cause the moss to turn brown. This moss should then be removed with a spring rake or scarifier.

Moss treatments can be difficult to apply. It’s easy for the amateur gardener to get this wrong and kill areas of the lawn. It can also stain hard surfaces so extreme care should be taken.
