Ben and the team were a dream to work with, from the start. Ben had great design ideas, which we incorporated, and which have turned out brilliantly. The quality of their workmanship is top class. We left them to fit the kitchen while we went away and they did a fantastic job. They even did unplanned kindnesses like changing a broken garage door lock free of charge. We keep finding little unexpected touches that delight us. We will use them again for other jobs in the house in the future. When you find people like this, you don’t want to let them go. If anyone reading this decides to use them, you will not be disappointed.

Petersfield Climate Action Network

A NEW Petersfield Award for Green Business of the Year

Motivated by a desire to support local businesses in becoming more sustainable, Petersfield Climate Action Network are working with Petersfield Awards to deliver a brand new category for 2023: Green Business of the Year.

PeCAN are sponsoring this new Petersfield Award to highlight the efforts local businesses are making, spark conversations around sustainability and share experience and knowledge.

Feedback from local businesses suggests that many owners want to be more sustainable but lack the time, knowledge, and resources to make necessary changes. Others are fully focused on running their businesses and are not aware of opportunities to increase sales of sustainable products and services, or find themselves unprepared for sustainability risks, such as losing business to greener competitors or cost increases linked to unsustainable parts of their supply chains. Some business owners may not know about grants, business tools, and networking opportunities that could help them to capture sustainable business opportunities and address the risks of not doing so.

The criteria are detailed opposite. The business you nominate does not need to fit into all these criteria, one will do! These efforts should not go unnoticed, please help us to celebrate them.

Make your nomination now and encourage others to do the same before

the deadline on 31st July: petersfieldfest. com/petersfieldawards

Criteria

Businesses that have done something innovative, impactful, or inspiring in one or more of these areas:

1. Environmental Impact: Measures the business's footprint and efforts to reduce energy, water, waste and emissions.

2. Sustainable Practices: Evaluates eco-friendly sourcing, circular economy initiatives and reduced plastic usage.

3. Innovation and Green Technologies: Considers adoption of renewable energy, energy-efficient equipment and smart technologies.

4. Social Responsibility: Assesses community engagement, diversity, fair labour practices and social impact projects.

5. Education and Awareness: Examines efforts to educate and raise awareness about environmental issues.

If you are interested in a time-limited, subsidised Whole House Retrofit Plan and grants for home energy efficiency measures, please email superhomes@ petersfieldcan.org for more information.

Petersfield Museum & Art Gallery

Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery is delighted to announce a new exhibition Anita Klein: Modern Icons from 10 June - 23 July

Anita Klein (b.1960) is an acclaimed painter and printmaker and is well-known for her witty, charismatic, warm, and poignant artwork. This exhibition presents paintings and original prints that explore key aspects of Klein’s work, including motherhood and family as valid subject matter for art and the central importance of drawing, design, and harmony in her compositions.

As a student at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, in the early 1980s, Klein was instinctively drawn to the immediacy and poignancy of figurative art. Encouraged by Paula Rego, a visiting lecturer, to seek a way forward in the visual diaries that she had been keeping, Klein focused her artistic gaze on her life and young family. Rego also inspired Klein to experiment with printmaking. It was through these early woodcuts and drypoint etchings that Klein began to develop her distinctive style, which is widely loved and admired by so many.

Primarily using her friends and family as inspiration, Klein creates images that reflect her commitment to the idea that everyday experiences are memorable, valuable, and universal. She says of her career, ‘I have been making pictures of my everyday life, like a visual diary, for the past 40 years’.

Although the people in her pictures are based on herself or those close to her, she is not interested in creating individual portraits. Instead, she wants to capture how the moment feels and for this to resonate with the viewer and their own lives. The experience of daily life within a family or domestic environment is a rich source of inspiration for those artists who have chosen to engage with it. Still, it has also often been overlooked and undervalued. Through the work of Klein, and other artists and writers, there is a gradual shift towards greater recognition and status.

This direct connection with the viewer, the placing of individuals at the heart of the narrative and the power and beauty of a carefully balanced and harmonious composition are qualities that Klein is inspired by in the work of early Italian Renaissance painters. In 1984, while still a student at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, Klein was awarded the Joseph Webb Memorial Prize by the Royal Society of PainterPrintmakers to spend the summer drawing from the Italian masters. She lived in Arezzo, Tuscany and spent a month exploring the frescos of Masaccio (1401-1428), Giotto (1267-1337) and Piero della Francesca (1415-1492). The classical ideas of beauty and harmony she saw in the careful arrangement of the figure within these Italian paintings continue to inspire Klein. Today she has a small flat in Anghiari where she regularly focuses on her paintings, several of which are included in this exhibition.

Mr Mac

When your broadband contract finishes it is a good time to shop around, you do not have to stay with the same supplier. You might be surprised how much you could save. I was with BT up until now, after I spoke with some of the other suppliers, I found the identical service for more than 40 per cent less with the price fixed for 2 years. Remember, except for Virgin and some of the newer fibre cable companies, everyone uses the same cable network supplied and serviced by Open Reach.

If you're thinking of buying a new computer; Mac, or Windows, and you live in my service area , I'd be happy to help you research your options and find what is right for you. Whatever it is you are thinking of buying ask me first. I will point you in the right direction to reputable suppliers. As I do not sell equipment you will have a completely unbiased opinion. My advice is free and with my many years of professional experience it will be good. Once you have chosen, I am available to help you set up and learn how to use them. The same goes for a new TV I can connect it to your home network, install the apps you want, and show you how to use all the features. If you would like to receive my monthly newsletter, full of tips, advice, and recommendations please visit my website at mistermac.co.uk where you will find a link to sign up and see previous editions.

Crab & Asparagus Tart

SERVES 4 PEOPLE

PASTRY INGREDIENTS

• 180g plain flour

• 90g cold butter, cut into small pieces

• 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 tbsp water (reserve the white for glazing the pastry)

FILLING INGREDIENTS

• 200g fresh crab meat (½ white, ½ brown meat)

• 300g tender asparagus

• 2 large eggs

• 1 egg yolk

• 260ml double cream

METHOD

Heat the oven to 200C. Making the pastry. Seive the flour into a large bowl with a pinch of salt, then add the diced butter. Take a table knife or pastry scraper and continue to cut the butter into smaller pieces in the flour. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then add the egg yolk and water.

Use the knife or pastry scraper to cut in the liquid and then pull the mix together with your hands, trying not to overwork it, until you have a ball of pastry. Alternatively, put the flour, salt and butter into a food processor and whizz until you have crumbs. Add the liquid and pulse the mixture until it comes together. Wrap the pastry and chill in the fridge for about 10 mins, before rolling out to fit your tin. Chill again for at least 30 mins.

Blind bake the pastry: cover it with greaseproof paper, fill it with baking beans or dried pulses and place in the oven for about 15 mins or until the pastry is almost ready. Remove the paper and beans, prick the pastry with a fork and place back in the oven for another 5-10 mins, until the really dry and crisp. Brush with a little beaten egg white and bake for an extra 2 mins. This may seem a rigmarole, but soggy pastry can be the ruination of a perfect tart.

Turn the oven down to 180C. Cut the asparagus spears to fit the tart. Plunge into boiling water for about 1 min if pencil-thin and just 2-3 mins for finger-thick spears. Drain and refresh in a bowl of cold water.

Beat the eggs and yolk with a fork, stir in the cream and white crabmeat and season with a little salt and pepper. Once the tart shell is ready, spread a layer of the brown crab meat over the base (this is where most of the crab favour is) and then pour over the crab custard. Arrange the asparagus on top of the tart and carefully place in the oven for 20-25 mins, until the filling is set and just wobbly.

Allow to sit for about 15 mins before removing the tin and serving warm with a simple salad and perhaps some new potatoes.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH 12

Settlement Agreements and talking ‘off the record’

‘Using a settlement agreement to bring an employment relationship to an end, and effectively wipe the slate clean, can be very useful. But, to start the conversation, employers need to be able to speak off the record,’ says Linda Wilson, Partner and Head of Employment with MacDonald Oates. ‘There are ways that this can be done, but it’s not as simple as just stating something is off the record – employers need to take care and be aware of a few limitations.’

What is a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement is a binding agreement to waive most contractual and statutory employment rights against the employer, usually in exchange for a payment and sometimes other benefits such as an agreed reference.

To protect the employee, where there may be an imbalance of power, the agreement is only binding if certain conditions are met. Most significantly, unless the agreement is reached through Acas, the employee must receive advice from a lawyer or an appropriately qualified advisor.

Benefits of a settlement agreement

Dismissing an employee can be fraught with risk. Employers need to have a legally sound reason and must follow a fair dismissal process. If not, an employee with more than two years’ service could successfully bring a claim for unfair dismissal. Employees do not need two years’ service if they can establish that something else was at play, such as discrimination or if the employer found the employee difficult because they ‘blew the whistle’.

Using a settlement agreement can avoid the cost, delay, hassle, and risk of instigating dismissal procedures. Unless certain rights are carved out, a suitably worded settlement agreement should prevent the employee from bringing claims against the employer.

Benefits of ‘off the record’ discussions

Talking ‘off the record’ allows for a frank discussion without the risk of it

being used in evidence before a court or employment tribunal. Otherwise, if the employer asks the employee whether they would be interested in an agreed exit, the employee could resign and claim constructive unfair dismissal. Alternatively, if the employee is dismissed further down the line, the employee could use this conversation in an unfair dismissal claim to show that the performance management process was a sham and the employer ‘wanted them out’ all along.

When are conversations ‘off the record’?

If there is a dispute with the employee, the ‘without prejudice’ rule may apply to protect communications genuinely aimed at resolving the dispute through settlement. This could apply to all types of employment claims, but does not apply in exceptional circumstances such as where the communications involve fraud or blackmail. If there is no dispute with the employee, and provided certain conditions are met, an employer can have what are known as ‘protected conversations’ without the risk of the conversation coming back to haunt them.

A word of warning; this protection only applies to unfair dismissal claims and discussions before the employee has left. If the employee has other potential claims, such as for discrimination, the conversation could form evidence in a tribunal. The protection also does not apply if the discussions involve ‘improper behaviour’.

We can talk you through the timing and what you need to cover to make sure conversations are ‘off the record’. There are ways to efficiently bring an employment relationship to an end and to keep risks to a minimum, but there are traps for the unwary. This is why we recommend you take legal advice and we can help with this. For further information, please contact Linda in the employment team on 01730 268211 or email lsw@macdonaldoates.co.uk. Businesses give nature a helping hand as South Downs ‘Park Protectors’ is launched

Anew scheme is giving corporations a significant opportunity to get involved with nature recovery and staff volunteering in the great outdoors.

The South Downs Protector scheme launches today (12 June) and is inviting corporate partners to support the South Downs National Park for a year with a £10,000 contribution.

The donation will help fund the National Park’s ambition to create 13,000 hectares – or an area almost twice the size of Southampton – of new habitat where plants and animals can thrive. The ReNature initiative is tackling biodiversity loss by creating significant new areas of woodland, hedgerow, wildflower meadow, and wetlands over the next decade.

Businesses that sign up to the scheme receive volunteering days in the incredible landscape of the National Park, a ranger talk, as well as corporate getaway opportunities at the breathtaking Seven Sisters Country Park.

They will also receive a one-year subscription to the Green South Downs Sustainability Certification Program, which focuses on helping businesses reach sustainability goals.

As the scheme launches, two businesses are already on-board – Brighton-based firms Clarity Environmental and Groundsure.

James Winkworth, Head of Charity at the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity for the National Park, said:

“We’re really excited to be launching the Park Protector initiative and are looking for corporate partners right across the UK.

“Businesses are a ‘force for good’ and vital to the future of this treasured landscape. As Britain’s youngest National Park we’ve achieved a lot in 13 years, but there’s so much more we can do to make this an even better place and protect it for future generations. The truth is that this is a fragile landscape in the busiest part of the UK and it needs a lot of support. Businesses can make such a significant impact by becoming a Park Protector, helping in the fight against biodiversity loss and climate change, while also demonstrating ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) commitments and creating a meaningful legacy.

“This is also a wonderful opportunity for colleagues to be able to get their hands dirty, and their feet muddy, and get involved in some hands-on conservation work!”

David Honcoop, Managing Director of Clarity Environmental, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the South Downs National Park Trust and their new Protector scheme. Through Clarity Cares, the caritative extension of our business, we are already involved with national level environmental organisations, it was therefore very important to us to support a local and ambitious initiative like the Renature scheme.

“This partnership allows us to not only support the local environment but also actively contribute to the preservation and restoration of the very landscape that surrounds us. We are very proud to support the South Downs National Trust both financially and through volunteering days.”

Ceri Sansom, Consultancy Director for Groundsure, said, “Groundsure specialises in environmental intelligence, including highlighting climate change risks to property when it’s sold, so when we were looking for an organisation to support we wanted to make sure that it matches our ethos. The South Downs Protector scheme works for us because its aim is to improve the local environment through renaturing and will allow us to contribute both with funds and hands on support through volunteer days. We find volunteer days are a great way to help the local community and environment as well as build our teams.”

HELPING YOU TO BE HAPPY, STRONG AND HEALTHY

Welcome to Thrive

Based in the beautiful South Downs Market Town of Petersfield, Thrive is a community minded, safe and friendly healing space. We offer a variety of wellbeing modalities ranging from yoga classes, mindfulness, sound healing, reflexology, pain therapy through frequency and massage, plus delicious organic drinks such as herbal teas, fresh smoothies and juices that are in alignment with the seasonal nature which surrounds us.

Why are we different?

We aim to align with the encompassing flow of nature and the natural rhythm of our Earth, Moon and Sun. To achieve this, we aim to base all our modalities on the natural geometric pattern of spacetime. This incorporates the understanding of the role that the arts and creativity, gratitude, natural sunlight, epigenetics, grounding, structured water (H3O2), magnetism and temperature all play in the alignment of our inner and outer environments, and therefore our relationship to self and other. Through our own personal journeys, we have realised that joy, strength, and confidence are our basic natural right, and that these are the foundations for dis-ease reversal, longevity and optimal health. Unfortunately, physical injury, trauma, mental & physical overstimulation, poor diet and environmental pollution can be a hindrance to reaching that stage of joyful equanimity. We are passionate about what we do and are here to listen to you, to help you overcome any challenges, and to assist you in attaining the vitality which you deserve.

Pop in for a chat and a listening ear, join us for a class, some pain relief treatment, or simply let nature guide you to the ultimate smoothiewhatever it is, we will always be happy to see you!

Yoga & Classes

At Thrive, our classes are accessible to everyone, beginners as well as more advanced practitioners. Underlying all of it is bringing mindfulness and presence to the work – the all-important Zen part which makes yoga truly yoga and not just gymnastics. Yoga is a

discipline that can be practiced by everyone regardless of age, shape, flexibility, believes, health conditions and injuries. There are lots of variations and modifications that can be tailored to an individual’s needs. It is important to practice at your own pace and ability.

COMMUNITY / WELLBEING

Petersfield Food Bank

Petersfield Food Bank started in 2016 when Petersfield Area Churches Together (PACT) took over the running of the Salvation Army Food Bank. It is now a registered charity, run by a board of trustees and management committee, a manager and a large team of volunteers, and it relies on the very generous donations of both food and finances from members of the public and regular donors. The Food Bank operates to assist people in urgent need and it provides a safety net until their personal circumstances improve. Free packs of dry food, essential toiletries and household items are provided. Cash vouchers are also given for people to spend at Petersfield market for fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, eggs and bread.

Petersfield Food Bank operates from the Methodist Church in Station Road, and the distribution of food packs takes place there on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9.30 to 11.30. There is a modern storage system and food packs are prepared in advance.

Requests for help are made by referrals from approved partners, including Citizens Advice, the Department of Work and Pensions, GP surgeries, health professionals, Winton House, local housing groups, schools, social workers and local churches. When needed people are also signposted to other agencies. Collection points for donations are located around the town, in supermarkets, some banks and building societies and at all PACT churches. Food can also be delivered to the Methodist Church on Monday and Wednesday mornings, from 9.30 to 11.30.

In 2022 1277 food packs were distributed, helping 1939 adults and 1016 children.

Further details can be found at www.pactfoodbank.org.uk, where there is also information about how to make donations and seek a referral. Lists of the latest shortages can also be found on Petersfield Food Bank’s Facebook page, and via the BanktheFood app.

Drought Control, Water Management

Lawn Watering and Drought Management

Lawns need water. Let’s understand the water requirements of your lawn and how wetting agents and drought management products work.

Why do I need to be concerned about moisture levels in my lawn?

In times of extended drought, grass reduces the water it supplies to the leaf. It stores water in the roots to keep itself alive. The leaf will turn brown, appearing dead. The plant may be dead, you won’t know for sure until moisture returns to the root zone. If a grass plant had other issues to deal with, such as grub damage, that has reduced its root mass, it may well die in a period of drought as it doesn’t have enough root to retain moisture needed to survive.

Drought conditions often result in more lawn weeds and less beneficial soil biology

Some grasses tolerate drought better than others. Failure to provide water when your lawn needs it could result in more issues with weed grasses such as Poa Annua (annual meadow grass) which are better adapted to take advantage of poor conditions. Certain weeds thrive in drought conditions. Not watering your lawn could be making your lawn weed issues worse. As grasses die back, this creates space in your lawn for new weed seeds to settle, ready for germination later. In addition, a number of weed types thrive in drought conditions. One such weed is yarrow. Difficult to control once established in your lawn, yarrow is very challenging to irradicate.

Healthy soil biology is essential for a healthy lawn. When moisture levels drop, so does the population of beneficial soil microbes, responsible for breaking down organic matter, excreting nutrients into the soil which benefits your lawn grasses. This breakdown of organic matter also reduces surface thatch.

How do wetting agents benefit my lawn?

Not everyone can water or wants to water their lawn. There was a time when all we could do for lawns in times of drought was add water or wait for rain to return. If soil has dried out too much, then often that water struggles to be absorbed into the soil. This is when soil has become hydrophobic and repels moisture. Soil in this condition also struggles to hold on to water and it quickly drains through the soil out of the grass root-zone.

A more modern approach to moisture management involves applications of wetting agents. This technology was developed for golf courses and has now found its way into modern, professional lawncare.

What is a wetting agent and how does it work?

A wetting agent is a specialised molecule which is used to reduce the surface tension of water. Surface tension is what forms water into a droplet. The fact that water has a high surface tension can be an issue when we want water to penetrate a surface or spread throughout another material – such as soil. Wetting agents help water penetrate into soil and then hold water in the root zone for longer, reducing water wastage and making any water far more effective for plants.

Wetting agents and moisture retaining products can drastically reduce the quantity of water you need to maintain a healthy lawn through periods of drought.

Typically, wetting agents come in a liquid form and are applied to your lawn using a sprayer. Some manufacturers supply wetting agents in granular form where the liquid has been applied to a carrier which can then be applied using a spreader. In this format the inert carrier would break down following application, releasing the wetting agent into the soil when water is applied, or it rains.

Will wetting agents reduce the cost of watering my lawn?

The amount of water you need to apply to your lawn can be significantly reduced through the use of wetting agents. In addition, the time it takes for your lawn to become stressed in a period of drought can be extended and therefore you can start watering later or you may even find that the rain has returned before you need to begin to water.

Do wetting agents work if there is no rain?

Wetting agents are there to make water more effective for your lawn. Applied in a period of drought they will sit patiently on the surface of the soil waiting for rain to return. When it does, they spring into action, aiding the penetration of that rain into the soil, spreading it laterally and holding it in the root zone for longer. In this way they make even the smallest amount of rainfall more effective. As lawncare professionals, we have access to industry leading products and technology that not only helps you achieve a wonderful, healthy lawn you can be proud of, but also products that help you to avoid longer term issues you may not even be aware of. Learn more about lawncare from our website or contact us to ask our advice.
