body, but in a young child suffering malnutrition and suppressed immunity, it had very quickly taken hold, probably via a small open cut. The consequences of no treatment for this child were life threatening, with a high risk of septicemia and endocarditis. While we were in the Amboseli region, we spent a memorable day at the Rescue Centre, set up to rescue and protect girls from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The number of rescued girls had grown since my last trip 2 years ago, and it was so encouraging to see the Centre thriving, with the girls growing in confidence, social skills, and academic and sporting ability. It was wonderful to spend a whole day with them, hearing of their progress, singing, dancing and performing with them and being convincingly smashed in volleyball. aving just returned from another hugely successful humanitarian trip I’m now trying to put my experiences into words. I’m going to start with a simple and heartfelt ‘thank you’ to you all for your support.Your contribution, be that words of encouragement, a packet of toothbrushes or financial have enabled us to provide care for over 1500 patients. We have been quite overwhelmed with the amount of support we have received, and deeply touched by the donations either given anonymously or from people that have never met us. Thank you for taking this cause to your heart too, you know who you are. Our trip was initially overshadowed by concerns of the tensions surrounding the general elections. However, the charity rearranged our itinerary to avoid any areas of potential conflict, and the expedition ran smoothly. We spent the first half of the trip in the southwest, working with the Massai. We travelled to some remote communities where malnutrition and infection rates were very high, especially amongst the children.On one memorable day, when we were down to half a team due to a diarrhea and vomiting bug, I had one of my toughest cases. This is the copy of a post from that day: ‘Finding it hard to describe today, but this is how it started. Warning, don’t swipe if you’re squeamish. Such a poor community with domestic abuse, FGM, teen pregnancies, gynae issues and some serious infections. We saw 301 patients with half a team, in just half a day, with sweat pouring off us. Tough day in 35 degree heat.’ I am describing the case of a 7 year old boy. He was sitting on one of the benches waiting for treatment and was covered head to toe in large watery filled blisters, some of which had burst and had exposed raw, bleeding lesions. He looked as if he was covered in 60 – 70% burns and was shivering, despite the heat and was unable to stand. I picked him up and took him through to our pharmacy area and laid him on the treatment table. The nurse and I carefully cut away his clothes and Massai beads. Some of his clothes were so intertwined with the wounds, that his skin came away as we undressed him. We washed him first, applied an iodine ointment to the whole of his body, and then carefully dressed his wounds, virtually covering his whole body in bandaging. He was in obvious pain, and yet was so incredibly brave. We arranged for a motorbike taxi to take him 40km cross-country on unmade roads to get him to hospital as fast as possible. None of us had seen an infection like it, so we were pleased when the hospital recognized the condition as Scalded Skin Syndrome due to a severe Staphylococcal infection. This bacteria can live harmlessly on a healthy

Whilst working within the Massai communities, we treated many girls and women who had been cut. Their symptoms ranged from period pains, incontinence and pelvic congestion, to severe scarring, fistula, infertility and emotional trauma. I treated one woman with severe abdominal pains and infertility. She had FGM done aged 10 and was married at 11. I took her to a private room to examine her and found a large caesarean type scar above her pubis. It turned out she’d had a growth removed from her Fallopian tube. The scarring and adhesions from the FGM and the operation were extensive, holding the uterus in a sidebending/rotation pattern and causing congestion in the pelvis and a density of the tissues. I treated the muscles of the pelvis, released the diaphragm and thoraco-lumbar fascia, worked deep into the scar tissue in the abdomen and used an internal manipulation of the cervix and uterus together to improve position, circulation and drainage. I showed her some pelvic and low back mobilising stretches, self massage techniques and we chatted about the best positions and time of the month to maximise chances of conception. It was truly wonderful to spend time helping this woman and I felt so fortunate to have the skills to do so. I pray I have done enough to stimulate the natural healing mechanism of the body to bring about change. After the intense dry heat and dust storms of the Amboseli region, we travelled to the green, cool, lushness of Naivasha to treat Rose farm workers. Here we encountered many cases of breathing and chest related conditions, from infections and asthma to allergies and shortness of breath, as the farm workers are exposed daily to high levels of pesticides and herbicides. There was also a high proportion of children suffering with fungal infections, such as Ring Worm and also parasitic worms in their gut. This is a clear indicator of general ill health, malnutrition and suppressed immunity. As you can see we treated such a wide variety of people and conditions, and travelled to many different locations. Full of challenging cases, fulfilled opportunities, speed learning, friendship, love, tears and laughter. These experiences constantly make me re-evaluate what Osteopathy is, how it can help, and pushing me to keep on digging deeper into this incredible profession. I have been left with some extraordinary memories, patients pain and suffering imprinted in my mind forever. The transition home is always tough, as the contrast is so stark and the differences immeasurable. The adjustment back to our privileged lifestyle is hard. omsey residents can keep fit for free thanks to new outdoor fitness equipment installed in the War Memorial Park. The new equipment includes a shoulder press, chest press, leg press and exercise bike among other machines that work a range of muscle groups. Similar equipment is becoming increasingly popular in towns across the country, providing new ways for adults to keep fit for free. Community and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Councillor Tony Ward, said: “The War Memorial Park’s Friends of the Park group initiated this project and I’m pleased to confirm that we’ve secured funding from developer contributions to pay for the project. We have listened to feedback from residents and Friends of the Park and are delighted to see that the equipment is already being used.” The project supports one of Romsey Future’s ambitions; Living Well in Romsey. Romsey Future is a partnership made up of local organisations that work together to build consensus and deliver on shared ambitions. Education HARROW WAY CELEBRATE THEIR 50TH YEAR GROUP – THE CLASS OF 2017

arrow Way recognised and celebrated the achievements of a particularly special year group recently as part of their 50th anniversary. Watched by proud families, teachers and Governors, the class of 2017, the school’s 50th year group, were joined by the Mayor and Consort of Test Valley, Councillor Carl Borg-Neal and Mrs Borg-Neal and special guest, Shonagh Manson. Shonagh, a former Harrow Way student is Assistant Director, Culture and Creative Industries, working for Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. A very proud headteacher Michael Serridge welcomed back the former students praising them for their wonderful GCSE performance which he described as another set of outstanding results for the school. Commenting on the government changes to GCSE grading, which didn’t hold the 2017 cohort back, he applauded the students for the impressive 81% who achieved the new style grade 9 to 4 (equivalent to the current A* to C) in English, 71% in Maths and 66% in both English (Language or Literature) and Maths. Commenting on the 50th anniversary he said: “In 1967 we opened our shiny new doors for the very first time, welcoming just 140 students. Over the last fifty years thousands of students have walked through those doors.You were the 50th year group through, initially as 11 year olds of varying confidence and abilities but all leaving as self-assured 16 year olds, bearing the hallmarks of a Harrow Way education - confident, independent and well prepared for a successful future”. Mr Serridge went on to introduce Shonagh Mason who before presenting the GCSE certificates and Subject Awards gave a very positive speech telling the students: “Follow your passion and don’t be afraid to try anything and everything on the way. I worked from being a barmaid to an administrator at a pharmaceutical company then a Director for the Jerwood Charitable Foundation before landing my dream job, only 12 weeks ago as Assistant Director Culture and Creative Industries working for the Mayor of London”. Inspirational artist is part of Rum’s Eg showcase

t is an amazing story of triumph over adversity - a Romsey teenager who is deaf, cannot speak and has cerebral palsy has produced beautiful works of art to be exhibited at Rum’s Eg art gallery. The inspirational and colourful work of 16-yearold artist Tjili Grant Wetherill will go on show at the the popular Bell Street venue when it introduces an exciting programme of featured makers during 2018.

Our new programme will give members of the public the opportunity to interact with the featured makers at a series of events.”

Born in Cambodia in 2001, weighing just 1kg, Tjili was the only survivor of triplets abandoned on a hospital doorstep in Phnom Penh. Fortunately, Tjili was adopted by a British couple, James and Vik Grant Wetherill, and lived in Singapore Tjili Grant Wetherill until October 2016 when the family moved to England. Proceeds raised from the sale of her work at Rum’s Eg will support her ongoing medical treatment. The January launch will also include ceramicist Dave Sutherland, textile creator Helen Murchie and painter Lynne Reeves. Ceramicist Dave, from Lyndhurst, has enjoyed pottery from an early age, but since retirement has produced large stoneware storage vessels, bowls and pitchers decorated with tenmoku, chun and copper red glazes. Dave Sutherland

Textile artist Helen is from Scotland, and now lives in Locks Heath. Her passion is Harris Tweed on to which she embroiders digitised designs. She uses the embroidered panels to make cushions, cushion kits, notebook covers and a variety of accessories. Romsey painter Lynne is inspired by life, people, places, the light and mood of the day, the warmth of the sun, and the music of the sea - in particular, the beauty, history and light of St Ives in Cornwall. Experimenting with different types of media and techniques, Lynne incorporates paper collage and acrylic inks as 14

opiary goes as far back as the Ancient Romans with its first known appearance in a Tuscany garden. Here in the UK at Leven Halls in Cumbria, its Grade 1 Listed garden dating back to the 1694 boasts the oldest and most famous topiary in the world. Topiary came into being as part of the birth of formal landscaping during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which has historically led to the common misconception that you need a large garden to enjoy these shapely shrubs.

In fact topiary in large country gardens went out of fashion during the eighteenth century and it was the small cottage gardens that carried on the art of clipping hedges into clearly defined shapes. Today we use topiary in small gardens to give form as well as structure in clearly defined spaces and during the winter months topiary comes into its own with very little competing in the garden for attention. There are even clever examples of parterres created for the front gardens of small terraced houses, while small box hedging helps to soften edges where a garden has given over most of its land to hard landscaping and raised beds. Holly, bay trees, and conifers are some of the more popular trees to use, although the King and Queen of topiary is the box and yew tree. Traditionally, dramatic effects were created with geometric shapes in the form of balls, pyramids, spheres and spirals. Today, you can be as whimsical as you wish and go for more fanciful forms such as dolphins, peacocks and butterflies, all in the name of living sculptures. inter berries are the Christmas lights of the garden. Their brilliant colours take the place of flowers in your garden at this time of year. What could be more heartening during these short, dark days than the warm glow of Pyracantha berries against its dark green foliage? Birds in winter are not fussy eaters but, like children at Christmas, they are attracted to the bright and shiny. They are also opportunists and will eat any berries appropriate to their size, so blackbirds and thrushes especially like windfall apples which wildlife friendly gardeners are kind enough to leave lying on the ground, whilst robins, tits and some finches will enjoy smaller berries such as cotoneaster and berberis. Generally speaking, birds favour strong colours, especially red followed by orange then yellow, which present, as far as birds are concerned, the appetising glow of a quick snack. Pale fruits, such as pink Sorbus or the Snowberry with its sinister white fruits (one plant I positively dislike), are avoided by birds until driven by starvation. The black berries of Christmas Box, Sarcococca confusa, shine amongst the glossy evergreen foliage and ripen at the same time as the deliciously scented but insignificant flowers appear. Some Crab Apples, especially Malus Golden Hornet, hold their fruit long into the winter; the yellow fruit making a stunning composition against a blue December sky. The common herringbone Cotoneaster, C. horizontalis, bears its red berries on bare black branches. THE NEW, INDEPENDENT BUSINESS CENTRE IN STOCKBRIDGE

ince The Vine Inn closed in 2012 it has been the subject of much concern and discussion from the locals and regular visitors to Stockbridge High Street. After a period of uncertainty, DC Li Builders have renovated this listed building to an extremely good standard and it is now nearly completed and close to full occupation.This former coaching inn, dating back to 1850 is a building very much in the heart of Stockbridge and its renovation is much to admire. Dique Li and his son Joe, together with their excellent team of loyal and skilful tradesmen have been on site for eighteen months undertaking this high-quality refurbishment.

To the rear of the main building of The Vine is Jo Loveland running her Early Rider business which is “passionate about the manufacture of children’s bikes”. A hair dresser, run by former Stockbridge favourite, Misho Dimitrov, will also be based there.The Stables have been converted into retail/office units and include Deborah Barlow’s Vine Pianos and Alison Warner running Bobbin Sewing School. Beyond the converted stables is a new office building which has been pre-let to TMFP offering financial planning advice for businesses and individuals; adjacent are three holiday lets which will be ready for occupation in May 2018.

All the units were let (terms agreed) within four weeks of coming onto the open market in March 2017.This illustrates and confirms the high demand for quality commercial space in Stockbridge whether it be retail or office space.We have been able to attract a variety of users from a high-class wine merchant to a piano tuner.The wine merchant is Wine Utopia who have moved from a central position in Stockbridge to a larger unit with an abundance of character and enabling them to offer a greater variety of wines. Adjacent to Wine Utopia is Carina Rose Bridal, run by Carina Maylam, and offering a beautiful and relaxing place to browse for designer wedding dresses.The third shop fronting the high street is Stocks, which is a quality gift shop run by Sandie Russel who lives in Broughton and has another similar outlet in Henley. Sandie says: “I feel passionately about independent shops in the town centres. They are the life blood of a town and critical to its success and future”

On the top floor of The Vine we have two office users, Bright Side Toys who manage the world-wide distribution of many well known branded toys and Lottie Keith an interior designer.There will be one residential flat accessed from the courtyard of The Vine Yard. There is a great cross section of users and we are certain that The Vine Yard, as it is to be called, will be a thriving and an important part of the commercial hub of Stockbridge.The Southern Evening Echo reported on the success of the conversion and incorrectly stated that The Vine Yard was to include an estate agent’s office.This, I think, caused a little concern to another local estate agent! tockbridge was delighted to welcome Piers Morgan to turn on the Christmas lights on the first Friday of December. Thousands of people turned out on a perfect wintery evening to join in the festive fun and to support our local hero – Alex Lewis. From the Christingle service for the Children’s Society to carol singing, fire eaters to jugglers, sausages to pizzas, Father Christmas to hand bell ringers, 2 choirs to the Test Valley Brass and so much more, there was entertainment up and down the High Street. ITV Meridian came to film the event live for its early evening programme. However – things didn’t go entirely to plan! At the appointed hour Piers started the countdown with the huge crowd outside the church and pushed the plunger and nothing happened. The crowd roared with laughter and a somewhat surprised Piers implored the crowd not to inform his onscreen wife, Susanna Reid of his “failure”! Within a few minutes the church’s faulty socket was bypassed, and the lights came on to huge cheers! Piers Morgan then walked the High Street meeting thousands of people before he went to a dinner at the Greyhound on the Test where 6 people had bid in an online auction to have dinner with him and Alex Lewis, a quadruple amputee, to raise funds for the Alex Lewis Trust. Substantial funds have been raised so far. Monday mornings Good Morning Britain was dominated by Piers’ experience in Stockbridge. The Meridian footage was played over and over again and Piers came up with a conspiracy theory involving Susanna Reid and Charlotte Hawkins who used to work with the Meridian presenter, Richard Slee. Another mention for Stockbridge was on Have I Got News For You, throwing more shame on poor Piers! Alex Lewis was interviewed by Piers and Susanna at the end of the programme, further shedding light on this inspirational young father. came across this recipe using windfall apples, but at this time of year I am sure you will have some left over fruit from the festive fruit bowl. However it can be made almost at any time of the year and takes a lot less time to prepare than the traditional Seville Orange variety.

Ingredients

• 2 Grapefruit or (1 Orange and 1 grapefruit) • 4 Lemons • 2lb (900g) apples (I have used a mixture of cooking and eating), peeled and cored. • 5pts Water • 5lb Sugar • Fresh parsley if available or a teaspoon of dried tyme • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Method

Wash the citrus fruit and peel off the coloured part of the skin (a potato peeler is good for this). Then shred finely. Peel away the pith and chop the flesh roughly. Chop the apples and place with the water, peel and flesh in a large heavy pan. Tie the citrus pith, pips apple peel and cores in a piece of muslin and tie this to the pan. Simmer gently until the citrus peel is tender and the quantity reduced by half. Remove muslin bag, squeezing well. Add the sugar stir until dissolved then boil rapidly stirring occasionally until setting point is reached. Allow to stand to cool slightly before putting into clean warm jars with a well fitting lid. en bronze plaques and four new information signs have been installed in Andover to mark the town’s heritage trail. Starting at the Town Mills, where wheat was ground into flour until the 1960s, the trail’s highlights include the decorative Time Ring on the High Street, the Norman Arch - the only surviving section of the Andover Church - and St Mary’s Church which was re-built in 1856 after resisting several attempts of demolition. The trail reveals what happened next and it ends at the Andover Museum where guests can immerse themselves in the finer details of the past. Test Valley Borough Council is currently inviting artists to submit ideas for two murals that will complete the Heritage Trail. The designs should provide visuals that animate two of the heritage locations; the Old Jail on Bridge Street and the Angel Inn yard in the High Street, and provide a coherent theme to the existing trail. The Deer Dilemma

hristmas is over for another year, and with it all signs of Dasher, Dancer and the rest of the team.There haven’t been any wild reindeer in Britain for around 800 years, but a herd was successfully introduced in the Cairngorms. You might see one roaming in the National Park, but it’s unlikely they will ever become numerous enough to be a nuisance. In the south-east we may not have reindeer, but we certainly have plenty of deer, and in some places, far too many of them. Not only do they cause thousands of road accidents every year, but they are voracious eaters who don’t confine themselves to the countryside. In 2014 the city of Salisbury faced the dilemma of deer taking up residence in the cemetery beside a busy road on the edge of town.The image of fawns curled up between the gravestones may be endearing, but not for grieving relatives when funeral flowers have been devoured.The authorities were forced to remove all the rose bushes from the Garden of Remembrance as these were decimated by the deer. Debate continued about how to get rid of these stubborn, if photogenic, pests. A deer fence? Impractical at nearly two metres high. A cull? Unpopular. As an official commented: “I don’t want to be on the council that shot Bambi!” Driving past this spot last year, I noticed two deer, unperturbed by the traffic, grazing in the cemetery as if they owned the place. Less likely to be seen in town is the muntjac, which prefers woodland, farmland and scrub. But it will happily forage in gardens, trample on crops and has even been seen grazing on a traffic island. It’s about the size of a large dog, and is known as ‘the barking deer’ due to the canine sounds it produces. I had forgotten how peculiar they look, until one stepped out in front of my car recently (fortunately it was on a quiet, straight

road so I could avoid hitting it).These are stocky creatures, with longer legs at the back than the front, giving them a hunched appearance, and they have short, rather devilish horns, rather than elegant antlers. Unlike other deer, the muntjac prefers to fight like a boar, having canine front teeth which protrude from its mouth as tusks. Looking at those, I can see why muntjacs are blamed for widespread damage to tree trunks. This one sauntered from thick woodland and stopped in the middle of the road to stare at me. Apart from the ginger face, its coat is brown in winter with white undersides and tail, which it flicks when agitated. Although plentiful in Britain, and increasing steadily, the muntjac is not a native species, having been introduced from China in the early twentieth century. A number escaped or were deliberately released from private estates and feral populations have thrived ever since. One factor in their success may be that, unlike other deer, they have no fixed breeding season and can produce young at any time of year. The muntjac is certainly a survivor. Fossils date the species to the Miocene period, meaning it was walking the planet as much as 23 million years ago. It’s incredible to consider that this diminutive deer has changed little since the days of the sabre-toothed tiger and the woolly mammoth. It has survived predators and climate change, including an ice age or two. No matter what this winter throws at us, there’s little doubt that the muntjac will take it all in its stride.
