Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen Mrs Barnell approached Happy Kitchens with a challenge. The current layout and look of her kitchen was not working, and many other companies were put off by the fact the kitchen was on the first floor and in a town house just off Winchester High Street, so parking was an issue. Not for Happy Kitchens though, we were by far the best quote for the quality and came up with the best design, leading to the kitchen pictured above installed in less than 7 days. At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

Community Wellbeing HOUGHTON TRAIL EVENT: 29 APRIL
TIME TO GET OFF THE COUCH
2018 - 10.15AM AT HOUGHTON VILLAGE HALL
M
any thanks to David Broome for saving the event from closure. Clare Stephens and David will be managing this event with the help of others along the way. Every year the village buzzes with excitement when this event is on. The feedback is always so positive, the focus being on the friendly, village feel; the homemade cakes and sandwiches; the relaxed atmosphere of the event; the tip top organisation and the stunning location. People travel from far and wide to run, walk or cycle through this beautiful Test Valley. Many also feed back to us on the encouragement and help from the marshals on the course.
I
love that cartoon of a drowning man shouting to his dog on the bank, “Lassie, get help!” In the next picture we see the trusty dog lying on a psychiatrist’s couch. We all encounter many and various frustrations that we can’t always deal with on our own. But the idea that to ‘get help’ involves a tortuous process of introspection and confession is way out of date. It was based on the medical model of a patient-doctor relationship, and on Dr Freud’s psychoanalytic style in particular. His patients lay on his elegant couch, several times a week for years, while he sat invisibly behind them, puffing on his cigar and telling them what was wrong with them.
Naturally a good number of locals take part in the event and it is a great opportunity for family participation with a good variety of routes mapped out on the day. Details about The Houghton Trail, including the photographs and results from previous years is on the website: www.houghton-trailevent.org.uk. You can also follow it on Facebook. If you would like to take part you can enter online, by post or on the day.
Entry Fees:
Advance entries: Adults - £12.50 Under 16s: £7.00 On the day: Adults - £15.00 Under 16s - £7.00 All proceeds are split equally between the All Saints Church, Houghton and the Village Hall. Stockbridge businesses generously support this event financially, namely Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice, Evans & Partridge, The Trophy Box. Other generous sponsors include Reg Goodwin (Website Manager), Hildon Water; Michael Woodhall & Associates; Hobbs the Printers; Elliott Brothers, Romsey and Up & Running, Southampton. This event would not succeed without the generous support of the sponsors and volunteers. We can’t thank them enough. Details of other contributors are on our website.
There is a welcome change in the way we ask now for professional help. We are customers rather than patients. We can choose between a wide variety of services on offer. We expect to feel better, sooner. We want the process to be safe, effective and empowering. But the client-therapist relationship is far more than a consumer-supplier negotiation. The analogy is more like finding a personal trainer with the skills to help you feel fitter.
Fingers crossed for good weather!
As a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist, like a personal trainer, I do not need to know about your past or private life: only your present situation. At a difficult moment, it does not help to ask ”Why?” so much as “What to do about it?” Lassie saves the day every time, by being resourceful, practical and coming straight to the point.

Financial contributions and sponsorship towards the costs of running this event are greatly appreciated.

This woeful misconception lingers on in the popular imagination. People who would not think twice before phoning a breakdown company when their car won’t start on a cold morning, or a decorator when their house is looking tired, are still reluctant to ‘get help’ for themselves when they are unhappy or overwhelmed.

Wellbeing THE FORUM TALKS TO SARAH DEWAR FROM MIND BODY BEING ABOUT HOW HOMEOPATHY CAN HELP DEAL WITH STRESS AND ANXIETY
T
here’s no denying that we live in an increasingly stressful and unpredictable world. Latest estimates show that in 2016 over 12 million working days were lost due to this condition. It’s not just those in employment that are suffering; with exam season fast approaching there are millions of students across the country under huge amounts of pressure to perform well and succeed.
As always, a homeopathic approach recognises the individuals’ experience and therefore the most appropriate remedy will be the one which best matches the individual’s experience and characteristics. I also use Quest 4 Bio-magnetic Health Screening which can be extremely useful in understanding any underlying nutritional deficiencies and food sensitivities which may be having a negative effect on our health and wellbeing. Sarah believes that we all have the potential to be in good health and that Homeopathy and Bio Magnetic Health Screening can help pave the way. If you feel that stress or anxiety is having a negative effect on your health and wellbeing please get in touch. Sarah is available on Thursdays at Dorthe Thomas Spa in Andover or she can arrange home visits.
Stress affects how you feel emotionally, mentally and physically which manifests itself in your behaviour. You may feel overwhelmed, irritable, anxious or lacking in self-esteem with racing thoughts, constant worrying and difficulty concentrating. Stress can cause headaches, muscle tension, sleep problems or feeling tired all the time.
Forum readers will receive 25% off their initial consultation with Sarah in March. Quote Forum March when booking.
As a homeopath, I am always interested to understand what a client is experiencing from their perspective and in their own words. Often we use words in quite generalised ways, so to really understand what

FOOD SENSITIVITIES Food sensitivity and nutritional screening can help us learn what our individual body needs to maintain optimal health and well-being. Screening gives us detailed information about your particular food sensitivities and is an excellent indicator of your vitamin and mineral requirements. Screening provides a basis for appropriate diet and nutrition recommendations specific to you.
QEST4 BIO-ENERGETIC HEALTH SCREENING Mind Body Being use the Qest4 for our Bio-magnetic health screening. It is a totally noninvasive way to get detailed information from your body about the balanced and unbalanced aspects of your health. The Qest4 creates an imprinted informational remedy, the same concept as a homeopathic remedy, tailored specifically for you to be taken daily.

a client is truly feeling I need to ask them for examples and get them to describe their experience in as much detail as possible. In doing that, I find that individuals have quite different words for what they are feeling. For some it is a feeling of anxiety or nervousness but for others it can feel like agitation. Some name stress as a feeling of not being able to cope, or a deep frustration, which shows there is such a wide range of emotions and feelings associated with stress.

orthe Thomas is an Andover based “Super Facialist” whose High Street Spa recently won Gold at the British Hair & Beauty Awards. Ahead of her time, Dorthe has been collaborating for years with cutting edge Anti-Ageing brands such as Cryosthetics, to deliver non-invasive treatments that really work for her clients. Dorthe looks at the skin holistically and observes that “most of us need to exercise 3 to 4 times a week to keep our body’s skin toned and tight and the same applies to our face.” Dorthe’s facials will often start with a lymphatic drainage massage to detoxify your skin at a deep level. “Ageing well is about strengthening the connective tissues that are the framework beneath the skin that results in a fuller face and lifted skin,” Dorthe explains. “It’s all about looking better as you grow older.Today my clients demand more from their treatments; long gone are the days when they were content with receiving a facial that made them feel relaxed and glowing just for that one day. Now, and rightly so, they expect results that last.” Collagen-inducing treatments are her tried and tested approach for clients wanting more youthful looking skin. “When we’re young, our bodies naturally produce this protein in abundance, hence why skin

appears firm, supple and smooth. However as we age, our collagen production begins to deplete and as a result skin becomes gradually looser, giving way to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging.“ Luckily, all is not lost, as there are ways in which we can stimulate the body’s own production of collagen. Dorthe offers a variety of collageninducing treatments to help rewind the clock and restore complexions back to their plump, taut and youthful best. FibroBlast is one of the newest and most exciting treatments to hit the beauty world! If you’re looking a little bit tired, becoming conscious of your laughter lines, falling out of love with your sagging eyelids or simply wanting a fresher look, then Fibroblast could be the treatment for you. Microneedling, also known as Dermal Rollering involves causing a controlled injury to the skin as a way of effectively tricking the skin into repairing itself. The treatment involves rolling very fine needles over the target area and piercing the skin’s surface. Following this regulated injury, the skin’s healing process kicks into action, thus stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

Wellbeing GOOD HEALTH IS NOT A DESTINATION, IT'S A JOURNEY FOR LIFE
W
eight loss, feeling better or getting fitter should not be the goal of your health resolutions. These are simply side-effects of living well. If all you crave is to fit into a size 12, run a mile, be beach body ready or be headache free, what happens when you reach that goal? Do you stop the quick-fix exercise programme, fad diet or other temporary solution? What happens to the motivation to keep doing what you are doing?
What happens if you never reach that goal? Do you give up? Achieving good health and wellbeing should be considered a journey for life, an ongoing process incorporating all aspects of your life. Losing weight, feeling fit, content and pain-free is simply a happy side-effect to this journey. As Osteopaths we consider the body an interconnected whole. Therefore to stimulate change, anything that influences the body both from within and without, must be addressed. These influencing factors can range from how well rested we are, our diet, our mental health, our physical fitness and our interactions with others. We call this the ‘Bio-psycho-social’ model of health.
and to promote good bacteria. Include lots of good fat in your diet, such as avocado, nuts and oily fish. • Incorporate some brain downtime in your day. Our lives are now lived at speed and our stress levels are higher than ever before. Long term high levels of our stress hormone, cortisol, is destructive and inflammatory to the body. I love the practice of mindfulness to help counteract this. This can be a hot bath, a coffee with your favourite magazine or a mindful practice, using an App such as Headspace. Getting started on your journey to good health need not involve lycra, a suitcase of supplements, medication or a gym membership, just a touch of determination and motivation, and if you need a little nudge in the right direction, we are here for you. Within the practice we have highly skilled and experienced practitioners in Osteopathy, Nutrition, Pilates, Homeopathy and Counseling for all your integrated heath care needs. Community FLY TIPPING COURT CASES SUCCESS FOR TEST VALLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL
Dr Rangan Chatterjee recently summed this up very well: ‘Because the body is one big connected system, we need to take a much more rounded view. One that considers the 4 key pillars of our daily lives, the way in which we relax, eat, move and sleep’. Our attitude to finding health needs to be far more of a cocktail approach, rather than a single shot. There is no magic bullet, or one solution, we need to tick every box within the complex organism that is our body. The key to making good health a journey is to enjoy the process, rather forcing yourself to the gym or through the latest exclusion diet. Making changes to your lifestyle can be so hard, breaking old habits and making new ones take time, and there will be the inevitable pit falls and blips along the way. If you can make it pleasurable, and even sociable you are far more likely to stick to the changes you have made, especially if you have the support of others. Look for like-minded groups, either online or in person to connect with, seek support from health care professionals if you need help in a specific area, and above all, if you encounter a blip do not beat yourself up over it, reflect on why and remind yourself tomorrow is another opportunity to try again.
Here are some practical ideas for an integrated approach to your health: • For adding more movement to your day try ‘Active10’.There is increasingly less evidence to support the 10,000 steps per day idea, and more evidence to suggest that raising your heart rate for just 10 minutes is more effective and more realistic. Look up www.nhs.uk/ oneyou/active10 • When it comes to sleeping well, respect your natural circadian rhythms. Artificial light interrupts these rhythms, so avoid screens an hour before your bedtime or use glasses with orange filters, and ensure you get lots of light when you wake up in the morning.Try having your morning coffee in the garden! • Eating the rainbow is such a good guide to eating well and ensures you get plenty of vitamins. Avoid all processed food and reduce your sugar intake. Ensure you include lots of fibre to support good bowel function 10

he Council have been successful in prosecuting two fly tippers who dumped their rubbish within the borough, resulting in large fines. Last month, Basingstoke Magistrates Court convicted a man (Mark Francis Day) for a fly tipping offence near to the B3048 at Longparish in February last year which cost him a total of £1,332. He had been employed following a social media conversation where he agreed to take household rubbish away for someone but dumped it in the countryside instead. The Council were able to bring the case to court because of strong and reliable evidence supplied by witnesses. The court also convicted a second man, (Ian Jolley) for fly tipping along Enham Lane, Charlton in March last year and this cost him a total of £1,628. He fly tipped garden waste resulting from his gardening business. The Council were able to bring this case to court because of clear footage obtained using one of their covert camera systems designed to capture fly tippers in the act. Residents should be mindful about individuals advertising a ‘man and a van’ or ‘tip runs’ service, especially on social media. Some advertise and take waste for a fee but fail to dispose of the waste responsibly. GUEST SPEAKER ANNOUNCED FOR TEST VALLEY BUSINESS AWARDS 2018
T
he Guest Speaker for the official launch of the Test Valley Business Awards 2018 has now been announced as local businessman, and award-winning fly fisherman, Charles Jardine. Charles has been fly fishing for many year; during that time, he has fished, written and painted around the world, winning a few awards along the way. He has also run several businesses. Currently he is, very proudly, the director of the England Youth Fly Fishing Team; and working on his opus – Fishing 4 Schools. Directing operation with TCAF and taking the fabulous sport into urban areas and less privileged populations, where he sees fishing as a true opportunity for young people to learn and heal from, and a chance to enthuse a future generation as well as address mental health issues – an area where the calm of angling can play a significant role in helping. Charles Jardine says of the Test Valley Business Awards: “I’m honoured and delighted to be speaking at the launch of the 14th Test Valley Business Awards; I am utterly passionate about small, individual business. I am also fanatical about individuality and diversity - the very things that I believe the Test Valley Business Awards extol – and I encourage all local businesses to attend the launch and, of course, to enter the Awards.” The official launch will see business representatives from across the area come together celebrate doing business in Test Valley; to learn more about the Awards’ entry process; to network and not least to enjoy some lovely food from The Greyhound. Attending the launch is free but places are limited and so must be booked in advance by visiting https://tvba2018launch.eventbrite. co.uk or www.tvbawards.org.uk Now in its 14th year, the Test Valley Business Awards – run by a steering group of volunteers – has become a well-established platform to promote businesses excellence and especially to shine a light on the many new and small innovative businesses operating out of sight. It is a great way to enable smaller enterprises to gain the recognition and exposure to grow. To book your free places, and to learn more about the launch, please visit: www.tvbawards.org.uk

t Godolphin School, the student run ‘Green Group’ works on a number of initiatives throughout the academic year to help reduce the impact the school has on the environment. From the recent focus on single-use plastics, the group has made and branded their own reusable mugs, which can be used in local coffee shops, in school, and as a handy mug that can be used again and again. This issue has been brought to the forefront of the students’ mind from the recent success of the television series, Blue Planet II and the BBC programme, Huw Fernley Whittingstall’s War on Waste, which focus’ on the problems of non-recyclable/reusable coffee cups and the harmful effects of micro plastics. This group is key for the girls to educate their peers on environmental and ethical issues and to channel their opinions to coherent action for their community.

the public. This promises to be a rare and insightful opportunity to observe creative processes in action. This one-day festival ends with a public performance which will include the premieres of these new works for voice and piano. Nicholas and Philip will also perform additional songs composed within the last 100 years, including Read’s atmospheric setting of Thomas Hardy’s Drawing Details in an Old Church. Singers from around the area, including Alresford Community Choir, will also be coming together to perform contemporary choral pieces, including Skempton’s Flight of Song originally written for CoMA and Read’s SingSong written for Hampshire Children’s Choir. In another exciting development, ex-Alton College students, composers Alex Ling and Joel Knee will be providing music for flexible ensembles – instruments and voices performing together. Festival bookings include an option to register as a performer. Singers and instrumentalists are encouraged to register their interest in performing. aving launched as a charity in 2014, the Martin Read Foundation (MRF) is in full swing in it’s 4th year supporting young composers. Known to many as Alton College’s enigmatic Head of Music, Martin died suddenly in 2012 having energised and steered countless young musicians onto their current path. Martin was also a published composer. MRF is a platform for the continuation of Martin’s passions for music teaching, composition and contemporary music. It’s annual Festival is the highlight of the Foundation’s year – a day full of musicmaking and performance, exploring and celebrating contemporary composition. It has presented many world premiere performances, and showcases young composers supported by the Foundation. MRF is endorsed by eminent patrons from the world of contemporary British music. Founder patron Howard Skempton (composer and lecturer at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) has recently been joined in his support by Gwyneth Herbert (awardwinning British composer, lyricist and vocalist) and Judith Weir (Master of the Queen’s Music). This year’s festival focus is Music for Voices. Initially held at Farnham Maltings, the Festival returned home to Alton College last year, and will once more set the College rafters contemporarily buzzing on Sunday April 22nd. Selected to receive the Foundation’s support this year are 3 young composers destined to go places: Jack Robinson (14, London), James Edwards (15, Hampshire) and Oren Hirtenstein (17, Cornwall). These young composers are busy working on their MRF commissions for baritone – Philip Smith, and piano – Nicholas Bosworth. To mark 100 years since the end of hostilities in Europe, they are each working on texts selected from poems written during the First World War. They each receive mentoring from an established composer, and workshops in composition-performance, run by the Foundation. NEW FOR THIS YEAR: the workshop on festival day, under the guidance of Howard Skempton, will be run as a masterclass open to

NEW JEWELLERS OPENS ON STOCKBRIDGE HIGH STREET
f you’ve ambled along Stockbridge High Street this year, you may have stumbled upon one of the area’s new gems - a low-lit, cosy shop with plush seating, wood burner crackling, and perhaps a dog basking in its glow.Venture inside to encounter a warm welcome, and offerings of diamond and rare coloured gemstone jewels that glow, as if lit from within. This is Miracca & Browne Stockbridge, an informal jewellery atelier with some serious Bond Street credentials. Miracca & Browne is the passion-project of husband and wife team David Miracca and Tiffany Browne. Together, the two have built their career making jewellery for some of Britain and Europe’s most luxurious brands. Their new shop is the culmination of years of experience in making and designing fine jewellery, and their work features a splicing of traditional goldsmithing techniques with new technologies. This allows them to create traditional jewellery with a contemporary feel pieces that are comfortable to wear, that stand out from the fray, and that will be as aesthetically relevant in 50 years time as they are today. David & Tiffany have also brought with them collections from a few of their highly esteemed jewellery friends: Henn of London, whose sought-after gemstones and intricate enamelled patterns

blur the line between jewellery and objet d’art; Wright & Teague, the husband and wife team whose iconic jewels happen to be part of the permanent collection in the V&A Jewellery Rooms; and silversmith Paul Savage, who has created a limited edition series of sculptural, personalisable silverware exclusively for Miracca & Browne. “We sell pieces that can only be bought from us, or directly from the designer-maker. We want people to come to us for something different than what you would get at a standard high street jeweller’s,” explains David. “We’ve been thinking about having our own shop for a long time; the Test Valley finally drew us in. When we made it our home we knew we wanted our first shop to be here in Stockbridge. The businesses are like ours - independent, boutique and family owned - and what a wonderful place to be.”

spores to germinate. In addition, compaction can result in waterlogging due to poor drainage and this also encourages moss growth.
HOW HAS YOUR LAWN COPED OVER THE WINTER MONTHS?
L
et’s take a look at common problems and what we can do now to improve things. Winter can be tough on a lawn. Low light levels and freezing temperatures stop grass growing. Waterlogging can cause grass plants to die and moss growth increases. Autumn leaf fall can kill patches of grass creating
bare areas.
I look at a lot of lawns and I meet a lot of people who are disappointed with their lawn and want to see some improvement. Many feel that there is no option other than lifting their existing lawn and starting again from scratch. However much can be achieved through lawn renovation which is generally far more cost effective and less intrusive than completely re-seeding or re-turfing your outside space. Spring is ideal for lawn improvements. You may be wondering what to look for in your lawn and what can be done to improve it. I group my assessments into three main areas.
Aeration of the lawn, either with a garden fork for smaller lawn areas or a mechanical aerator for a more effective result will reduce compaction. It’s hard work, but the benefits to your lawn are invaluable. Top-dressing will level out the surface of your lawn and help improve soil structure and drainage. Nutrition, weeds and pH All plants need the correct nutrition to live a healthy and disease free life. All too often I visit lawns that never receive any supplementary nutrition or perhaps get a general sprinkle of something from the garden centre once a year. The home-owner wonders why their lawn looks so poor. The grass is almost starving to death through malnutrition! Nutrition can be a complex subject. Getting the right balance of nutrients at the right time of year is essential to promote healthy growth. Too much food is almost as bad as no food, so if in doubt, do your research or speak to a professional.
Thatch Thatch is a layer of organic matter - typically dead moss, dead or dying grass, stems, roots and other plant life, between the surface of the soil and the green living grass leaves above. In some lawns this layer can be quite thick preventing water and nutrients penetrating through to the soil below. Excessive thatch causes the soil to dry out and grass to suffer. Some build-up of organic matter at soil level is a good thing as it protects the soil and growing lawn. However, too much thatch is a common lawn problem that needs to be dealt with appropriately. Scarification with a garden rake for smaller areas or a mechanical scarifer for larger lawns tears out the dead plant life and opens up the soil surface. It’s a tough job and your lawn will look a little battered for a short while afterwards, but the long-term improvements are essential if you want to enjoy a healthy luscious lawn in the future. Compaction, drainage and top-dressing Regular foot traffic over your lawn will compact the soil structure, resulting in fewer air gaps in the soil, restricting the flow of water and nutrients to roots. Compacted lawns dry out more quickly and support fewer beneficial insects and worms. They have lower counts of essential microbes required to break down dead plant life, resulting in a build-up of thatch. Symptoms include thin, stressed turf grasses more susceptible to disease and pests, allowing gaps in the turf for weed seeds and moss
Non-grass plants growing in your lawn are classed as weeds. Weeds grow at a different height to your lawn grass, are quick to flower and rapidly spread through seed distribution. The presence of weeds in your lawn will certainly impact on its appearance. Dealing with weeds is firstly about being able to identify what weed is present, understanding which pesticides are used to treat that type of weed and how much should be used to manage the weed but not damage the grass. pH is the measure of the acidity of any given compound. Ranging from 1 which is acidic to 14 which is alkaline. The issue being that a pH imbalance can ‘lock-up’ essential plant nutrients, making them unavailable to the growing lawn grasses and no amount of additional fertiliser is going to address the nutritional issues. When recommending a lawn nutrition treatment plan I always test pH levels and ensure any underlying pH issues are resolved before nutrition begins. If your lawn isn’t offering you as much satisfaction as it should then now is the time to think about addressing any underlying issues. As we approach the warmer, wetter spring days and beyond, grasses respond well to repair work. Speak with a lawn care professional who can make a full assessment of your lawn and offer guidance on what reparation works will benefit your lawn through the winter and heading into spring. You may be surprised by how cost effective this approach is, and how quickly your lawn responds to professional lawn care. WALLGARDEN TO BE AT RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2018
Quotes
‘Wallgarden’s work with Sarah combines our great passions and shared belief that gardens should be relevant, beautiful and useable places, which create a lifelong interest for all the family. Our intention is to encourage children to grow their own flowers, fruit, vegetables and herbs; and to help teach them about where their food comes from whether they live in town or country. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show showcases the very best of what can be achieved.’ - Nadine Charlton, Director and Founder of Wallgarden ‘Gardens are important to children because they are their first engagement with nature, which can lead to an understanding and empathy for the environment. For most children that connection starts at home. By creating a garden designed for children, we hope we can inspire them to love and nurture their outdoor spaces too.’ - Sarah Eberle, Designer
Competition
W
allgarden is collaborating with multi-award winning designer, Chelsea Gold medallist and landscape architect Sarah Eberle for an exciting new addition to the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
As a celebration of our attendance at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show we are offering the chance to win a bespoke playhouse worth £5,000 by Wallgarden. This beautiful playhouse has been created in the style of a potting shed, inspired by the old buildings found in traditional kitchen gardens.
Our bespoke playhouse for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2018 reflects the beautiful architecture of the Chelsea area, sitting within a bountiful garden designed by Sarah Eberle. The playhouse design is inspired by the Chelsea area moving from historic riverside idyll to its present-day extension of thriving modern London. With the beautiful townhouses in the area having outside space at such a premium, our tiny pocket of space will demonstrate what can be achieved, as well as showcasing our playhouse work in a city environment and for town gardens. It will be a blend of the local Chelsea environment and that of Hampshire, where both Wallgarden and Sarah Eberle are based. The small-scale townhouse and garden can be found on the Wallgarden stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 22nd 26th May 2018. The design team will be available for bespoke designs and orders throughout, and the townhouse is for sale with delivery after the event.
About Wallgarden
Wallgarden create bespoke playhouses, inspirational gardens and beautiful children’s furniture. Our work enables families to enjoy being outside all year round and is a clever mix of old and new. Our playhouses and gardens are magical environments to engage with. They provide children with a space of their own both inside and out, tailored to a family’s individual interests. Our designs are based on local architecture and the setting in which they will be based; the gardens are an extension of that personal space. Construction is a mix of reclaimed and sustainably sourced new material using local craftspeople and trades with every interior and exterior detail being relevant to either the setting or the family for whom it is being created. 24
To be in with a chance of winning, all entrants need to do is complete the entry form when purchasing a packet of our edible wildflower seeds, explaining in less than 30 words why they would like to win the playhouse. Entries will be independently judged on the most apt and original answer. The winner will be announced on Friday 8th June 2018. The seeds are available to purchase online and in selected independent retailers. Full details of the competition are available on our website www.wallgarden.co/competition For more details or further comment please contact: Nadine Charlton 07502 355 536 nadinecharlton@icloud.com www.wallgarden.co

I have never started a season with two string quartets, but, on the other hand, I have never before been approached by two remarkable organisations to host such evenings, one at the top of the professional market, the other being at the top end of the student market, exactly fulfilling the aims of Stockbridge Music.
They will be playing:
Beethoven String Quartet in D major, Op.18, No.3 Shostakovich String Quartet in C major. Op.49 Brahms String Quartet in C minor.Op.5l No.2 Tickets, £14, are on sale from; www. jumblebee.co.uk/stockbridgemusic The Lights Theatre Box Office: 01264 368368 The local box offices will open one month before the concert Sponsored by: The'Wykeham Gallery Stockbridge 26
The current three year funding programme comes to an end in March 2018 and a report proposing the support for the next three year period will be discussed at Cabinet on February 14. The report recommends funding for 14 organisations in total and in all cases a small increase is proposed to help meet the increasing costs of providing their services. They also represent a broad section of the Council’s work in a number of different areas. Community and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Councillor Tony Ward said: “The reason we have a three-year programme of funding means that these important services get commitment from us and a degree of financial security which allows them to plan for the future. We must also ensure that our funding is targeted to where it most needed and can be used most effectively. “One of our corporate priorities is “Contribute to and be part of a strong community” promoting the important role that the voluntary sector plays in the everyday life of the Borough.”
The 14 organisations applying for grant funding are: • Citizens Advice Test Valley • Unity (formerly Test Valley Community Services) • Unity Community Transport • Unity Shopmobility • Youth in Romsey • King John’s House • Andover Mind • Relate Solent • Age UK Andover • Alamein Community Association • Tourism South East • Hampshire and IoW Wildlife Trust • Andover Crisis and Support Centre • Two Saints Housing Association Of the three organisations that were not invited to reapply, they have been supported in exploring other revenue schemes. www.testvalley.gov.uk

THE WORLD PREMIERE OF STRING DIMENSIONS: A RECITAL IN ST PETERS CHURCH, STOCKBRIDGE, ON 9TH FEBRUARY 2018 - STOCKBRIDGE MUSIC REVIEW
Next came Fritz Kreisler, well known as a violin virtuoso and composer of short pieces but his string quartet is a fine work, apparently his 'tribute to Vienna'. lt starts with the cello alone and leads into an allegro followed by a vigorous scherzo. The following andante, described as a Romance, was truly beautiful. I thought I heard folk dance themes in the final allegro. This should certainly enter the repertoire. Antonio Bazzini, composer of a number of quartets, was another violin virtuoso. perhaps because of this his compositions have been neglected. Which is a real pity because Quartet no 6 which was played to us was a lovely blend of the conventional, so-called Germanic, style and the melodic and gracious ltalian tradition. Another work to hear again and a composer to hear more of. Liszt, on the other hand, is well known and much played. But his Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 is very familiar as a piano piece. what we heard was an arrangement for string quartet. This was like seeing an old friend in a totally new outfit - a surprise but a very pleasant one. The varied, often staccato rhythms and the variations in pace all translated beautifully to the quartet. This must surely become one of their most popular pieces. I said it was a coup to have a World Premiere in Stockbridge and the audience of 120 were truly grateful for what they had heard - one member said 'Wigmore Hall quality in Stockbridge,. String Dimensions are a relatively new formation but their excellence as players and their mutual understanding as they play are of the highest class. Stockbridge was the Cape Canaveral from which they launch into orbit and we were lucky to hear them.
T
here is no doubt it was something of a coup for Stockbridge Music to put on our first World Premiere. This is how it came about. A top-flight violinist, Bogdan Vacarescu, had started to feel that the repertoire for string quartets might be expanded by rediscovering neglected masterworks, often works written by composers whose primary output was not in chamber music. He took this idea to like-minded fellow musicians - the violinist Akiko lshikawa, the violist Brooke Day and the cellist Vanessa Lucas-Smith and the result was String Dimensions. They gave it that name, rather than 'quartet', because it left them able to form other combinations if they wanted to do so. Having begun rehearsing in 2017 they were looking for a venue for a first recital in 2018 and Stockbridge was suggested. Tim Lowden recognised that these were players of the very highest quality and urged that we add an extra performance to our list for 2018. The result was an evening of outstanding music which amply justified that decision. It also justified the basic notion that there are works which are not in the repertoire but which deserve to be played. But in case that sounds rather solemn, it has to be said that the effervescent and zestful personality of their leader Bogdan and the evident enjoyment of the group as they played - these were anything but solemn. They began with Grieg. He had started a string quartet but only finished a sonata and a scherzo. Playing versions of the third and fourth movements have been made from his sketches but the group chose only to play the first two movements. The first, with echoes of his first piano concerto was at times a little melancholy, at others more serene while the lively second movement had themes suggesting Norwegian folk music. This was worth hearing but was for me the least interesting piece of the evening.

HISTORY OF THE 1ST BATTALION ANDOVER HOME GUARD REQUESTED
L
ocal historian and author, Tony Raper, is recording the history of the local Home Guard units that existed in the Battalion area during the last war. The Home Guard was formed in 1940 (after Winston Churchill insisted the LDV be renamed), having started as the Local Defence Volunteers and set up to protect the country against possible invasion by the enemy and parachutists landing behind the lines. As the war years went by they developed into a strong fighting force, fully equipped and able to take on all-comers. As the British Army moved into Europe, the Home Guard took over most of the Home Defence duties, allowing our soldiers to concentrate on the job at hand. It was eventually ‘Stood Down’ on 3rd December, 1944, their job done successfully. Tony Raper is looking for photographs, people’s memories, stories passed down from their fathers, actual documents if there are any left, of the Home Guard and would be grateful if Forum readers could contact me on tel. no., 01264 364836, email : anthony.raper@outlook.com, or write to me at Tony Raper, 12 Silkweavers Road, Andover, SP10 1HU.
WYKEHAM GALLERY SPONSORS THE ORIGINAL THEATRE COMPANY TOUR OF 'THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST'
IN ST. CROSS CHURCH, WINCHESTER SUNDAY 18 MARCH 2018
I
t was in March 2014 that Jamie W. Hall formally took up the baton as Romsey Choral Society’s (RCS) new Musical Director to conduct a concert in Winchester’s historic and stunning St. Cross Church. In the 4 years since then BBC Singer Jamie has raised the choir’s performance standards to a new high and the choir is attracting increased attention, a new following and new members. Although RCS regards Romsey Abbey as its home patch and performs there regularly, the annual Spring concert in St. Cross Church has remained an annual diary fixture and Jamie uses the opportunity of the remarkable acoustic in St. Cross to showcase multiple pieces of music to feature the choir’s beautiful vocal blend, sensitive treatment of close harmony, and its ability to sing unaccompanied music in the most accomplished way.

This year is no exception, and at 7.30 pm, Sunday, 18 March RCS will perform an eclectic programme entitled ‘Motteten’ of blissful sacred European motets from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Listeners can expect to be transported by the wonderful sounds conceived by composers such as Palestrina, Rossini, Rachmaninov, Brahms, Monteverdi and Bach and many others.
W
ykeham Gallery are delighted to be sponsoring The Original Theatre Company tour of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The tour is performing at The Theatre Royal in Winchester from 5th to 10th March and at the Salisbury Playhouse from the 20th to 24th March. The Importance of Being Earnest by the master of comedy Oscar Wilde, makes a welcome return in this wonderfully witty, deliciously decadent and classic revival from The Original Theatre Company.
Conducted by the talented Jamie W. Hall, and accompanied by the skilful organist Richard McVeigh, this promises to be an evening of great musical enjoyment. For more details and for tickets go to www.romseychoral.org. uk or call 07780 682316. Tickets are also available on the door.
Starring national treasure Gwen Taylor (Coronation Street, Duty Free and Barbara) as the formidable Lady Bracknell, Downton Abbey favourite Thomas Howes as Algernon, West End star Peter Sandys-Clarke as Jack and the delightful Susan Penhaligon (Upstairs Downstairs, Bergerac) as the hapless Miss Prism and Hannah Louise Howell as Gwendolen. The Wykeham Gallery is a contemporary art gallery exhibiting all media, sculptures and ceramics. Founded in 1985, the gallery is situated in Stockbridge and shows work by many established artists whose output is consistently outstanding as well as exhibiting the works of some very young and exciting artists. The Wykeham are proud sponsors of The Importance of Being Ernest. Gerald Dodson of Wykeham Gallery said “The gallery has had a 10 year association with The Original Theatre and are delighted to sponsor this production of Wilde’s Classic comedy. We whole heartedly support the Company’s belief that the best theatre in the UK does not have to be in London and that high quality, high impact touring theatre is worth fighting for at every level and in multiple locations”. TEST VALLEY VILLAGES LECTURE - WEDNESDAY 21 MARCH AT BROUGHTON VILLAGE HALL - 8PM
A SPRING PROGRAMME OF
MEDITATIONS AT WHERWELL CHURCH
A
F
ollowing the success of the series of three meditations last Autumn, we are presenting three further meditations this Spring. They will be based on the lives of three people who have been instrumental in the establishment of the church: St Peter, Martin Luther and John Wesley. These reflections can provide a useful focus for thoughts on the meaning and purpose of our daily lives, and are interspersed with passages from the subject’s works and carefully chosen music. The meditations will be held at 6 pm in the church and last for around thirty minutes, and will be followed by refreshments.
The programme is as follows: 4 March St Peter, Apostle, Leader of the Early Church - 1st - 2nd Century
This talk is a rare opportunity to look at the background to the origin and meaning of the table and why it has been so important in scientific understanding over the past 150 years or so. Andrew will build up the picture from basic concepts and will discuss how the table has contributed to greater understanding of our world. Andrew studied biochemistry at Oxford and York , and spent most of his working life in public service education and leadership. One of his retirement activities has been using his teaching experience to explain to a wide audience the basis of molecular biology and he has presented short courses and talks to a variety of non-specialist groups.
6 May Martin Luther, Monk, Priest, Professor of Theology, Composer, Protestant Reformer - 1483 - 1546 AD
He is currently running a series of seminars on aspects of chemistry and biology for groups of people who are interested in science but whose knowledge may be at best a bit rusty. He is a frequent guest at research seminars in the Biochemistry Department in Oxford.
3 June John Wesley, Priest, Theologian, Founder of Methodism 1703 - 1791 AD

welcome return visit from Andrew Seber, with another of his lively science talks. This time, what you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask, about The Periodic Table. Often seen, rarely understood. An opportunity to start from scratch and find out how it is made up and why it’s useful. The Periodic Table is found on posters in laboratories and classrooms across the world. All the chemical elements that have been discovered or made are included.
