JANUARY SALE 40% OFF We moved into our house in Broughton and although the kitchen was serviceable its layout did not work for us. We looked at the usual suspects and found Happy Kitchens advertising in a local magazine. We invited several kitchen companies and Happy Kitchens in to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing, he also advised us about disposing of our existing kitchen and where we could get the best deal on our new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is fabulous, the fitting team are fantastic, well skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr Hensman
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

Caroline commented: “I am always pleased to support new business ventures in the constituency, and it was great to be able to have a look round the Auto Barn on Small Business Saturday. There were certainly a lot of people there and the plans for the future look really exciting.”

WELLBEING of which are in this article. If you hop over to our website, Instagram or Facebook feeds, you’ll find the rest of these daily tips supplemented with lovely videos, diagrams and photos. So lets start at the beginning: 1. The pelvic floor holds stuff in and lets stuff out, it has opposing actions. Therefore it has to be elastic and adaptable, yet strong. It is your floor, the core of your core, your center of gravity, the seat of your pants, sorry, did I say pants? I meant power.
FLY BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS INTO 2019 Has Christmas taken its toll on your pelvic floor? Picking up children or grandchildren, standing at parties, lifting the turkey out of the oven, a dreaded cold or a sudden burst of laughter can stress the pelvic floor leading to leaks, congestion and pain. Start 2019 as you mean to go on and find your pelvic power. In December we ran #PelvicAdvent in social media, a top tip for pelvic health everyday. I posted 24 little gold nuggets, the first 3
EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE - WHAT IS IT? WHAT IS EFT? Emotional Freedom Technique (“EFT”), commonly known as tapping, is a form of counselling increasingly in the mainstream with many celebrities turning to it. More importantly, experts are calling on the NHS to start using this self-help technique which helps clients to “rewire the brain” so that negative thoughts associated with either a physical or an emotional trauma, or both, are negated, and so aid the treatment of a very wide variety of conditions. For example, from fear of flying to Olympians looking for their final marginal gain in the quest for sporting success, to Lily Allen’s addiction to chocolate. A growing number of statements suggest that EFT is a growing and safe treatment and with the increase of demand for mental health services and a decrease of NHS resources, it is strongly arguable that the use of EFT within the NHS should be extended. HOW IT WORKS Like conventional medicine, the client does
As we get older our powers diminish, that’s why it is so important we stay fit and active for as long as possible. Physical strength and mobility are our best defense against the aging process. It is no exaggeration to say that a healthy pelvic floor is a major factor in a healthy, happy you. 2. Let’s connect. Do you know what it feels like to contract or lift your pelvic floor? Imagine you are about to break wind and a person you really fancy just walks into the room.Yup, you got it! That’s your pelvic floor. Now what about relaxing or stretching your pelvic floor? Trickier, as we spend most of our need to take responsibility for their own welfare. At the start of a session the client will voice their presenting issue thereafter, they tap the meridian points guided by the practitioner. It is not an invasive therapy and the client remains fully clothed. Meridian points on the body, derived from acupuncture, are tapped (light fingertip pressure applied) and the patient is asked simultaneously to think about the issue for which they are seeking support. The tapping addresses the negative emotion associated with stress, trauma or fear and eliminates the emotional stress and also any physical symptoms associated with the emotion. Negative emotion causes ‘energy blockages’ which are the hurdles many of us face in our daily life and by clearing the energy blockage, the client is able to move forward. Whilst wholly different from, for example, the elimination of a physical blockage in the digestive tract, the effect of tapping can be very similar. Each client responds differently but EFT can prove more effective/efficient that other therapies. In a case study run by the University of Birmingham, it was determined that just over five sessions are required to treat clients using EFT, comparing favourably with
day trying to hold stuff in. So, say the person you fancy doesn’t materialise and we can safely let the wind fly, that feeling of the bulge in the pelvic floor just prior to passing wind (or urinating) is your pelvic floor at its most relaxed. If you don’t feel confident in letting go, try this after emptying your bladder and do it lying down. 3. Sniff, Flop, Drop. Now add in the breath. If you’re comfortable, go onto all fours or into Child’s Pose. As you slowly inhale, relax your belly letting it hang down (flop), then allow the pelvic floor to gently bulge (drop). As you exhale feel a little lightening and lifting in the pelvic floor. Don’t try to contract or lift it yet. Most women with pelvic issues have short, tight and weak pelvic floors due to too much bracing and Kegel type exercises. So to begin with, we’re just going to work on connecting with the relaxation of the pelvic floor. Pelvic health issues are physically and mentally wearing and debilitating, but we can help you feel stronger, gain in confidence and trust your body again. Emma Wightman Women’s health specialist Osteopath www.the-sop.com @stockbridgeosteopathy other therapies such as cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) where around 20 sessions would often be required depending on the severity of the condition. In seeking to address her addiction, Lily Allen had tried hypnotherapy, aversion therapy, willpower, diets and even sniffing vanilla to curb her cravings without any success, before turning to EFT. WHO CAN EFT HELP? EFT reduces stress and anxiety, boosting selfesteem. It enables the client to have better perspective, clearer vision and see a positive path forwards. It is not a quick fix for weight loss or a short cut to being successful, but it will help eliminate the symtoms caused by stress or trauma and help build up confidence. Almost invariably the presenting issue, and its symptoms change during the session and each new aspect is tapped until there is no associated negative emotion. The session can conclude once the presenting issue is cleared of negative emotion. This sounds simplistic and of course some issues require a course of sessions whereas others are resolved in just one session. Contact Philippa Firth T: 07740 289411 E: pmfirth12@btinternet.com

LIFE CHANGING SURGERY FOR WEIGHT LOSS New Year, new you? January is often a time for new challenges, new resolutions and new goals. For many of us, our main goal is centred on weight loss. If you’ve been battling your weight for many years this can often feel like an unachievable and insurmountable task. Spire Southampton patient, Katie, had been battling with weight loss since she was 11 years old. With her weight only increasing and her personal well-being going down she decided it was time to make some tough decisions. “I was always a bubbly, sociable character but this has changed dramatically, especially since giving birth to my daughter. I had put on a huge amount of weight and felt like everyone would look at me and laugh or judge me based on how I looked. We had financial stresses because of the business and some personal family issues that were putting a lot of pressure on me. Being an ‘emotional eater’ I found these as excuses to eat and comfort myself. I would then crash diet for a few days until I gave in and binged again, it was a vicious circle that I just felt trapped in.” Katie had tried all the slimming groups, several times over. She had joined the gym and tried to go until her anxiety issues got really bad. Katie even tried hypnotherapy, all of which were short term and before falling back into the same vicious circle.
Her GP referred her to Spire Southampton Hospital where, following pre-surgery support, she met Bariatric surgeon, Mr Michael Van den Bossche. “It may not be common knowledge but morbid obesity, being very overweight, is now classified as a chronic disease just the same as diabetes or high blood pressure” says Mr Van den Bossche “Many overweight people fail to reduce their weight by means of dieting of lifestyle changes. Weight loss surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity and brings a host of medical benefits. In today’s world, obesity is fast becoming the most preventable cause of cancer next to smoking. In other words weight loss surgery can effectively reduce the risk of developing and dying of all sorts of cancer. It also adds extra years of good quality to one’s life expectancy. Who doesn’t want to see their grandchildren grow up?” Following her consultation with Mr Van den Bossche, Katie decided bariatric surgery was the direction she wanted to go in. “Everyone was very honest about surgery and how life changing it could be along with the risks and what I would need to change going forward. At no point did anyone say this would be easy. I can now say that this is a common misconception. Surgery is not an easy option for weight loss. It requires hard work and dedication on the patient’s part and should be taken seriously; it’s a very brave decision.”
PROMOTION Katie had a mini gastric bypass. This is when the surgeon creates a small compartment at the top of your stomach using staples. This will effectively be your new stomach and as it will be small, it will fill up quickly with food, giving you a sensation of fullness. Mr Van den Bossche explains the procedure “The mini gastric bypass is one of the most effective operations to help someone lose weight. During the procedure the stomach is reduced in size and a part of the small bowel is bypassed so that the body cannot absorb all the calories. I was the first surgeon in the UK to do this procedure back in 2010. Since then the procedure has become popular all over the country. The average time to do a mini gastric bypass is approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Patients recover very quickly after a shorter anaesthetic.” Patients normally stay for 2 nights and following surgery Mr Van den Bossche encourages patients to become more active. “Return to gym exercise or other sports activities is allowed after 6 weeks when all the wounds have healed soundly.” This is exactly what Katie did “By week 6 I started swimming small amounts and walking a lot more, the weight was falling off and people were noticing. I gained more confidence with every day and looked forward to buying new bits of clothing to see me through.” “I feel totally in control of my life again, I can run around with my children instead of sitting and watching them play. My risk of developing heart problems or diabetes (both in my family)
have minimised. I am confident, which means I have excelled in work, I socialise more, I have taken on an Open University degree, attended lectures and day schools all involving meeting new people. I love clothes and don’t live in black anymore. Although it is still a constant battle to eat correctly and manage my lifestyle correctly, taking constant planning, hard work, willpower and dedication, I am healthier and happier than I have ever been.” If you are interested in weight loss surgery, please contact Spire Southampton Hospital for more information on procedures, costs and specialists – 023 8091 4471. Consultant General Surgeon, Mr Michael Van den Bossche is offering free mini consultations on Thursday 7th February at Spire Southampton Hospital; please call 023 8091 4471 for more information or to book your complimentary appointment. Please note that mini consultations are an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have, and are not a formal outpatient consultation. If you wish to proceed to treatment or surgery, a full outpatient consultation will be required. SALSA Y-SOL - 'FEELING GOOD'
CHANGE YOUR LIFE…ONE STEP AT A TIME Every year, the calendar kindly starts over at Day 1. Traditionally, a time for rethinks and new beginnings. But perhaps you are sceptical about making New Year’s resolutions? With good reason: most resolutions collapse before Day 31. Why is it so difficult to make changes that are supposed, after all, to make you feel better about yourself? St Paul famously fretted, “Why do I keep doing what I wish I wouldn’t, and keep not doing what I should?” The answer is that he didn’t understand how the brain works. Our behaviour is chiefly governed, not by ideals, not by threats, but by habit. Like Google remembering your search history, the brain expects to do what it has done before. Habit is unconscious, involuntary behaviour. That is its value, and its curse.Value, because it saves time and energy; you don’t have to keep reinventing what to do or how to do it. Curse, because habits kick in automatically. Even when it is bad for you, habitual behaviour feels familiar, and takes less effort; and that seems comforting, even if you hate yourself for it later. Habits override your best intentions, and whoops – before you know it, you’re doing it again. ‘We are what we repeatedly do,’ as Aristotle observed. Our lives are shaped by what we repeatedly do…and by what we repeatedly say, hear, think, believe, imagine. Don’t shame yourself for what does not work in your life, as if your character were fatally flawed. Habits are learned. They can be unlearned, and new ones planted. Habit is all about connections. The brain links one habitual action to another. To grow a new habit, embed it into your usual routine: practise your affirmations or your Arabic in your daily shower. To unlearn a habit, you interrupt the automatic chain of events. If you habitually have a cigarette with your morning cup of coffee, and then cut out just the cigarette, you will feel bereft as the brain gropes for the missing link. But invent a new routine – drink orange juice instead, take the dog for a run – where the smoke has no place and would spoil the pleasure. When I was a child, a wire-and-plastic brace was fitted on my teeth that abruptly put an end to my comforting habit of thumb-sucking. I would have outgrown it anyway; I only remember stopping because of its brutal suddenness. But unlike childish behaviours, our most addictive habits do not gradually cease. Like water, they run along grooves dug deep by frequent use. To etch a new habit takes time and repetition, reminders to yourself and more repetition, until it becomes automatic. To get out of an old rut, you need strategies to avoid sliding into old patterns while you nurture new ways. Either way, if you want to change something in your life, it is practical psychology to pin it to a definite date, like the New Year. An external structure such as a timeline, or a planned programme or support system, helps you to put a decision into action and to monitor your progress. But improving aspects of your life is not about forcing yourself. The secret of lasting change is to make a new behaviour feel more natural and satisfying to do than to not do. One foot automatically follows the other when the way is clear ahead. Anna Powell www.annapowell.com
“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life - for Me and I’m feeling good” are the wonderful lyrics of Michael Buble’s song and they ring so true for the start of this brand New Year 2019. “Feeling good” that’s what we are after, “feeling good” is what matters, it’s what gives us strength, it lets us enjoy life with all its facets! Bring it on, we say! Yet, how do we get to this state of “feeling good”? Well let me share my own experience with you: Life continues to be very full for me, full of life’s challenges.Yet, what keeps me going and what gives me strength is, that I have Dancing & Yoga in my Life. Even in the most challenging moments in my life, I kept on dancing – I teach Dance & Yoga and this is how I make my living, so there is no letting up. Yet, it always surprised me, how ever low I felt – on the dance floor I came alive. Dancing lifted my spirits and I so enjoyed our Dance Classes and they were filled with Joy and Laughter no matter what. And it is not being fake, it is just what happens when you dance – it is natural. Mental Health is a big Topic at the moment and it absolutely effects every age group. I have heard of children as young as six being diagnosed with suffering from depression…and the queues to get seen by CAMHS are immensely long and speaking from experience, the results frankly not very encouraging… Yet, there are simple ways of how we can help our children and help ourselves: with Dancing and Yoga. Yoga has had the most profound effect in my life. As well as giving me an outer strength, it has given me amazing inner strength and resilience, so I feel ready “to weather any storm in life!” You see, I’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt! And I know what works, what makes us “feel good”. And from this experience our repertoire of Dance and Yoga Classes has grown over the last 10 years and it is a joy to see what a difference Dancing and Yoga has made in the lives of our Dance and Yoga Friends that have joined us over the years. “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life – for you too to start “feeling good!” Looking forward to seeing you on the Dance Floor and on the Yoga Mat! Last but not least, stop when you’re tired, that one more run might be the worst thing you ever did. It’s never too early for apres! WHAT SKI INJURIES DO YOU COMMONLY SEE? The most common injuries are tibial fractures and ACL injuries. Getting diagnosed quickly is important as we can now consider you for ACL repair rather than doing a reconstruction. This is only possible in the first 4-6 weeks. HOW COMMON ARE THEY? SHOULD WE BE WORRIED? These injuries are still rare and you shouldn't worry. It’s just good to be aware and maximise your chances of having a great injury free holiday.
AN INTERVIEW WITH AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON Mr Mark Frame, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon sat down with Spire Southampton to talk about his love for skiing, how to prepare for the ski season, injuries and the new Rapid Access Ski clinic Mr Frame is offering at Spire Southampton. WHAT GOT YOU INTO SKIING? HOW DO YOU GET INTO UNIVERSITY RACING? I have always been a keen skier, it definitely helped coming from Scotland with mountains (and snow!) on my doorstep. I actually grew up virtually next door to a dry ski slope and spent any free time I had in a pair of ski boots! As soon as I possibly could I grasped the opportunity to do my ski instructor qualifications and spent years teaching from beginners up to race training. I also had the chance to teach those less fortunate and expose them to a sport they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience. It was then a natural step to join the Aberdeen University Ski Club in the cold and snowy North East. It was a great club and great to be a part of the race team. I have always been competitive and bashing slalom poles down on a cold and rainy Scottish night never dampened my enjoyment. DO YOU STILL GET A CHANCE TO TEACH SKIING WITH YOUR COMMITMENTS AS AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON? I kept up regular teaching when I was an orthopaedic trainee in Glasgow, but like anything life became busy and it is not something that I could fit in between shifts. I now have 2 children and my teaching skills are coming in useful to encourage them to enjoy the sport I love. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE SKI DESTINATION? I loved skiing in Scotland. It’s not for the faint-hearted! Skiing in sleet and over heather, but if you can ski in Scotland, you can ski anywhere! My favourite place is Tignes in France. The food is also slightly better there! WITH THE SKI SEASON FAST APPROACHING WHAT DO YOU DO TO PREPARE? The key thing I do before skiing is making sure I am as physically fit as I can be. Running or cycling to prepare your legs. Stamina is the key. Injuries happen when you get tired and don't concentrate. Keeping your quads in good condition and having the stamina to resist the afternoon burn is vital! WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE PEOPLE PREPARING FOR THE SKI SEASON? Give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Gauge your level and work out what your goals are. Everyone is different and that's where having someone else to guide you through a programme is great. Is there anything you can do while on holiday or is all the preparation done before you go? Best thing is to make sure your gear is in top condition and as much as we all like the race skis, make sure your ski
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO SET UP THE SKI CLINIC AT SPIRE SOUTHAMPTON? I felt there was a need to have a rapid means for anyone who has had an injury whilst skiing to get diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible. Being able to book your clinic and MRI whilst still in your chalet in France just puts your mind at rest. The advantage of a quick diagnosis also opens the door for ACL injuries to be possibly treated with a new technique of ACL repair and Arthrex Internal Bracing rather than a traditional ACL reconstruction using your hamstring tendons as a graft. This new ACL repair technique could get you back on your feet quicker and with less pain. This needs to be assessed quickly as the window of opportunity is 4-6 weeks. Spire Southampton’s ski clinic allows patients to book appointments from the slopes, happy in the knowledge you’ll get treated as quickly as possible on your return to the UK. THE FORUM TALKS WITH
T
TIFF NEEDELL
iff Needell is clad in a purple cashmere sweater, tall and slim, he takes his coffee black and is delightfully very chatty. Born in Havant he grew up in Weybridge, Surrey near the Brooklands race track but moved back to Hampshire thirty years ago and for the past fifteen years has lived in a big Victorian house near Stockbridge. “My home is my favourite place here, it has 6000sq. feet more than our previous house along with a twelve-acre garden and was a bargain thanks to a main line railway link going through it – I have my own railway crossing!” Also running through the land is a stretch of the abandoned Southampton to Salisbury canal. “I’ve worked hard on restoring it and I think it’s now the best-preserved section.” The more we talk the more I realise that Tiff ’s home could well be a metaphor for his life - the gently flowing steady water of the canal will certainly get you where you want to go eventually juxtaposed with the dynamic speed of the train rushing headlong to its destination. It’s a train Tiff still wants to be on. ‘I feel like I’m the ‘nearly made it man’, that will be on my head stone” Although he laughs there is dissatisfaction and frustration behind the smile. There shouldn't be dissatisfaction as Tiff has had a successful career dating back to the 1970’s when he regularly raced at Thruxton. He also had a long and successful career as a British racing car driver competing in a wide range of events across the spectrum of the sport, including Formula One and the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race in which he finished third in1990. Tiff now works in the world of television and motor journalism and writes regular motoring columns for Modern Classics and Drive Tribe. He first came to our screens in 1987 co-presenting the original Top Gear, then co-presenting Fifth Gear for Channel 5 from 2002. He is now presenting Lovecars on YouTube that is proving to have an ever increasing number of views. Tiff is a very popular personality on the after dinner speaking circuit and regularly plays golf at pro-am and charity events. At Thruxton you can enjoy three high speed laps in a BMW driven by Tiff for £150. He is also a member of the Grand Prix Drivers Club exclusive to those who have raced at that level - Tiff qualified for the Belgium Grand Prix in 1980. It's enough to keep most people busy but then Tiff is not most people.
“I don't know why, I mean I never won a Grand Prix. but I’m always happy to play the stooge I suppose - the butt of people’s jokes on those occasions. I would like people to think I've achieved enough, I really want what they have - the money and the respect”. It’s a conundrum that seems to weigh heavy on his mind and one that perhaps may not be solved. Does he take issue with the amount of money in Formula One? “No not at all. Just think of the amount of Premiership footballers sitting on the bench all earning fantastic amounts then compare that to the Grand Prix grid there’s very few drivers earning the big money.” Talking of football, Tiff has a passion for the game. “I love it. I’m a season ticket holder at Southampton FC, have been for years. I’m always in the stands with all the fans I just love the atmosphere and the banter- love a bit of banter! It’s great that my sons still come back for matches it’s a way to keep the family together.” What was the best drive of his life? “Without doubt the Le Mans 24 Hours, both the drivers and their cars have to be at the peak of their performance and it’s an event so steeped in history. But the Macau track near Hong Kong is pretty special and of course I love Thruxton” What does Tiff drive at the moment? “I’m an ambassador for BMW at some of their events and have a 540i Touring on loan while our family car that we own is a twelveyear-old BMW X5 - so my wife and I both drive BMWs! As is the way these days, they’re both automatics even though I actually prefer manuals - I like to be able to drive through the gears that’s the point of driving isn’t it.” “The only other car I own is the Formula Ford Lotus 69F racing car that started my career and which I bought back five years ago some forty years after I sold it! I race it a couple of times a year in the Historic Championship and actually won a round at Thruxton where I had my very first race win in the same car way back in 1972!” What next for Tiff Needell? “I’m trying to develop plans for a short motor magazine television program, just a half hour slot once a week, but it’s a slow process!” Slow maybe, but no doubt it will happen. See Tiff on Lovecars - YouTube. GG.

THE MAGIC OF LIGHT The dark days of winter naturally lead us to think about light. Perhaps in particular, light in our gardens. While we are still in the midst of winter, it is an ideal time to assess how you would like to illuminate your outdoor spaces.
designed. This extends to exterior ceiling, floor and wall lamps together with outside standard lights for your sitting areas under pergolas or glass roofed verandas. Underwater lighting for ponds has become ever more sophisticated too. While clever design and creative planning can conceal the source of the light to create subtle lighting effects to your borders, sculptures, rows of trees or individual shrubs. What is more, from the comfort of your home you can control the lighting with remote controls and dimmers.
Where are the darkest spots? What would you like to see when looking out from the house? How about lighting around the front door which can serve two purposes, being both practical and proving an attractive approach to the house?
Create charm With some clever use of exterior lighting, you can bring a little charm and magic to your outdoor spaces in addition to its practical purposes, such as security lighting or wall lanterns by your front door. Attractive & Dynamic Garden lighting is now attractive and dynamic. It adds just that right touch for both the darker days of the year and for the warmer seasons when you are outside entertaining or relaxing. Additionally, the trend in garden lighting is becoming more artistic. There is a completely new range of highly technical lights and lighting to illuminate and enhance the view of your garden from your home. This includes special effects, down lighters, solar lights, delicate LED lighting strips and recess lights for lawns, decking and paving. It’s all in the design Furthermore, just as outside rooms are becoming more and more popular, so the accessories and materials to add the finishing touches to these spaces are becoming ever more stylish and well
Plan Now The current trend to have wide expanses of glass overlooking our gardens means that outdoor lighting is an art in itself. It helps to create an ambiance of magic and charm with soft, glowing illumination even in the depths of winter. Use the dark evening now to begin planning where best to install lighting and this time next year, as you wait for spring and look out onto a beautifully illuminated garden, you will be very glad you did!

GARDEN meander slowly up them, admiring the plants on either side and slowed by the horizontal lines of the risers. The ratio between the riser and the tread is crucial to the comfort or otherwise as one climbs or descends the flight. You will hardly notice well designed steps but if they are ill proportioned you will find them far more strenuous. Garden steps should never be as steep as those indoors.
GARDENING TIPS FOR STEEP GARDENS My clients on our first consultation are often apologetic about any gradients in their gardens. But I am delighted as I really enjoy designing steps. Well designed steps will define a connection between spaces but also emphasise the transition from one place

Councillors agreed to award the money from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) reserve, which is collected from new developments in the area to go towards improving infrastructure, facilities and services across the borough. Just under £100,000 will go to King’s Somborne Parish Council for a new building to house a preschool and community

The Environment Agency will also receive £25,000 towards the Romsey flood alleviation scheme for Greatbridge Road and the Mainstone area of the town and £270,000 will be used to help deliver a shared pedestrian and cycle route along Southampton Road in Romsey. The council has also allocated £35,000 for the provision of an informal crossing point on Botley Road near the new Co-op food store.
Six community projects are set to receive a share of almost £500,000 from Test Valley Borough Council following a cabinet decision on 5 December.
A long flight of steps must included landings to allow you a breather or at least a psychological sense of rest. From here you can lean on a handrail and enjoy the newly opened vista. The steps may lead away from the house where there are usually hard materials, such as brick or sawn stone, and formal planting relating to the house and into wilder areas of the garden where timber and gravel steps will complement the setting.
The £25,000 towards the flood alleviation scheme will be added to funding already provided by the Environment Agency, Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council. Various organisations can apply for CIL funding including parish councils, Hampshire County Council, the Environment Agency and community groups. TVBC sets out the types of projects it may help to fund in its Regulation 123 list, which is published on its website. Bids must be for projects with a value of £10,000 or more. Bids for funding are currently closed and will reopen on April 1 2019. www.testvalley.gov.uk

LIVE AND LET THRIVE T
ear-wet hair at her temples, she lies on the bed. Needing to cry great racking sobs and rail at the world, she is silent. Deafening grief won’t turn around that flight to Brisbane and bring her girl back. Lying on the bed, that morning vacated by her twenty-five year old baby, she turns her head and inhales the sleeping scent of her child. No more binge-watching bad TV on a Sunday night till the small hours, knowing that the weekend will be over once they go to bed. Or dressing in their one-sies to watch The Hunger Games. All of them. Again. Hands in a box of maltesers. Or hugging her, warm and real and whole, not some image on a laptop. “It won’t be so bad, Muzzy – we can Facetime.” Not so bad, just bloody awful. Now that her eyes are open and the leaking tears slow, she looks up at the glow-in-the-dark stars they never quite got around to taking down. There are spiders there in all four corners of the room, too. Good job her daughter didn’t clock them. Well, no point in turfing them out of the room now there’s no-one else in residence. Live and let thrive. A bedroom now spare and empty of her girl, but still filled with her presence. Along with three large bin bags. “Muz – didn’t get around to sorting out these.” She’d put Post-Its on them; Charity eBay Muzzy How she thought ‘Muzzy’ was going to squeeze herself into clothes two sizes too small, she wasn’t sure. Maybe she’d had more faith in her mother’s ability to stick to a diet than was strictly realistic. The fashions were probably too young in any event. Yesterday, her girl’d been writing on the sticky pads. Yesterday, she’d been packing, looking excited and painfully so much younger than her quarter century. Yesterday, sat just here on the bed, checking over her passport, ticket and money. Yesterday.. all my troubles seemed so far away. One of the spiders scuttled out of its corner with surprising speed and made it half way across the ceiling, before changing its mind and scuttling back. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh I believe in yesterday. The mournful ear-worm continued unabated in her head and her throat tightened. The spider repeated its scuttling manoeuvre. “Which one are you?” Talking to herself now to distract the tears clamouring to
fall again. “Ringo, John, Paul or – who’s that other one – can never remember his name..” A voice calls up from downstairs. “Is that you love? Are you alright? Would you like a cup of tea?” He is hurting too, but blessim, he is of the belief that a cup of tea, if not quite a panacea, will surely lessen the sting. And maybe he’s right she thinks, as she heaves herself off the bed and out of the door. Switching off the light, she remembers “George.. that’s him. G’night boys.” ....................................... Putting post in the bedside drawer of the spare room. Photographed and Watsapp-ed, it can be destroyed when her girl’s back for a visit next year, or maybe the year after. And her silver christening bangles have turned up. A bit random, but will she want to keep them – they’re a bit titchy? She puts them in the cupboard and they can be taken back to Oz next visit. Or not. Probably they’ll go into the eBay bag that she still hasn’t got around to sorting out. Looking around; five spiders now, they’ve been joined by a smaller one, but is that a spiderling or a sightseer? It’s living near the light fitting. Well, they can’t be the Beatles anymore, which is fine, she never really liked them anyway. Always thought the Monkees were better. Controversial, probably. P’raps they’re the Rolling Stones – aren’t there five of them? She’s not sure – and not sure that she’s very keen on the Stones either. Thinks they only did one good song, ‘Paint it Black’, but it’s in her top ten, so she forgives them for all the others. It’s not so bad with Facetime, actually. At least she gets to see her daughter, her face and expressions as she talks. How did people cope years ago? Exchange flimsy, tear splashed air mail letters. As many and as often as they were, they would never be enough. She has a thought. Take That; there’s definitely 5 of them, or there were. Loved ‘Rule the World’, her and her girl’s special anthem from ‘Stardust’, their go-to movie when Christmas tree decorating every year. She’ll be doing that on her own this December. Those tears, always hovering. ....................................... See next months' Forum Magazine for Part 2 © 2018 Lucia Foster-Found www.luciafosterfound.com

MUSIC TO FIT THE OCCASION Judging by the reaction of the audience, the entertainment provided for the WEOS 200th concert on 15th November was totally suited to the occasion, as the best attendance of the year welcomed guest artiste Nicholas Martin BEM from Leicester. Indeed, it was Nick (as he is known to his fans) who helped to launch the Club by performing its very first concert in July 2002. In 1981 Nick was offered the post of resident organist at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool – at just seventeen years of age – and went on to play there for seven days a week during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. Quite literally, his dream had come true! Another major highlight of Nick's musical career was an initial offer (in 1985) to perform in concert on the West Coast of Florida. Since that first visit he has continually been asked to return and has made over thirty trips across the Atlantic, where he has performed to large audiences. The Weyhill concert, which was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Test Valley,
NEW SPA AND RESTAURANT FOR HOLIDAY INN WINCHESTER’S £2 MILLION TRANSFORMATION The four star Holiday Inn Winchester will begin a radical transformation of its internal public areas and the creation of a new luxury Spa, with the project costing over £2 million. The redevelopment will provide a new ‘open lobby’ to the upper ground floor, which will feature a new restaurant that will include outside dining. An elegant curved bar will also be located on the upper ground floor next to the restaurant and will also serve the large lounge area, that is so popular with business visitors for casual meetings, plus there will also be a “To Go” café. A special workplace will
Cllr. Ian Carr MBE and his wife Beryl, was pre-planned to include several items which, for a number of reasons, had links to the Club and its history. The first half included a version of the Club’s signature tune, Weyhill Overture (previous versions being known as ‘Weyhill Fair’ and the ‘Weyhill March’), whilst Nick added to the celebration with Congratulations and the Anniversary Waltz. Even the Warsaw Concerto (theme for the film ‘Dangerous Moonlight’) was appropriate considering that the composer, Richard Addinsell, had once briefly lived in nearby Appleshaw Manor. The second half included Angel In Blue, this being the tune that led to the Club’s formation (details of which are included on the Club’s website) along with a variety of music commensurate with the recent Armistice Centenary. Amongst the tunes selected to close the evening was We’ll Meet Again – probably the wish of everyone present in the hall, but whether Nick’s wish to be considered for the Club’s 300th concert (in around eight years’ time) can be fulfilled is entirely in the ‘lap of the gods’.
www.weyhill-eos.co.uk be also be available in the lounge area, and for those who want to be entertained there will be a media/fun relaxing area. The refurbishment will begin in January 2019 and will be completed in a number of smaller phases that will enable the hotel to continue to provide its existing facilities of restaurant, bar, reception and lounge areas until the upper ground floor transformation is completed in Spring 2019, this will be followed by the creation of a new Spa on the lower ground floor level that will be completed in Summer 2019. The Spa will also have a private screened outdoor terrace with a relaxing hot tub. Luxurious treatment rooms will offer peaceful spaces for visitors to be pampered. Test Valley Arts Foundation (TVAF) are pleased to announce plans for an exciting new borough-wide arts and culture project for 2020. The independent charity, which has invested over £1million in the arts in Test Valley since 1991, aims for Test Valley 2020 to celebrate and promote the borough’s rich and diverse arts scene whilst also seeking out opportunities to ‘fill the gaps’ and create new events in areas which are less active. From workshops to music festivals, arts trails to plays, there will be wide range of events to choose from. Yinnon Ezra, MBE, TVAF’s chairman said “We firmly believe that the arts and culture is for everyone and want to make it fully accessible. Opportunities will be created for artists to engage with their communities, bringing creativity, innovation, joy, emotion and expression everywhere!” Test Valley Arts Foundation are asking for anyone with plans or ideas for arts related projects in the Test Valley during 2020 to get in touch now so that they can support them in any area needed, including fundraising, promotion and facilitation. They are also seeking suggestions for areas in which they could create new arts opportunities. To tell them about your project or ideas contact rebecca@testvalleyarts.org or use the online contact form at www.testvalleyarts.org

THEATRE REVIEW: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST “We are the people of this town,” chant the villagers at the start of Beauty and the Beast; this year’s Christmas panto at Theatre Royal, Winchester. The scenery and costumes make a fantastic first impression. Early on we learn that it is set in France – the land of current protest and unease – but then there is mention of Brexit, too.
and lots of ‘Oh no it isn’t’. In the shopping scene where Wally (Ed Thorpe) arrives on stage with a trolley, mum Dotty (Julian Eardley) - in a flamboyant dress that only befits a pantomime dame - asks whether he got what she wanted. “Did you get Oxo?” she questions. “No, they ran out of stock.” And so the gags continue to roll right on until “Bras?” “No they went bust!” Writer and director James Barry has clearly enjoyed himself here and even my daughter Harriett (7) gets the jokes and is in stitches.
The two-hour performance is littered with plenty of fun, jolly japes, double entendres
The cooking scene delivers another volley of laughs. Poor old Wally can’t seem to ask for

why they have such uncomfortable seating; why they are often very similar;how they have changed over the years; who owns the Church ; who comes to Church - and as we hope to have a short demonstration of the bells - why we have bells, and the problems they cause (at least from a clergyman's prospective). Revd. James Pitkin is Vicar of Lockerley,East Dean, East Tytherley and West Tytherley. He is also Area ( or rural) Dean for Romsey. Ordained in 1999 he was Curate ( Trainee Vicar ) at Chilworth and North Baddesley before moving to his current post in 2003. Before being ordained, he was an Engineer in the RAF - he maintains his interest in aviation through his work as Chaplain to the RAF Cadets.James has been part of churches in England , Scotland and Wales which have been in rural, suburban and city settings. He values the wealth and variety of church traditions and Styles. He is a patron of 'The Landmark Trust@, a charity which restores buildings in danger, making them available to all through letting as 'Holidays in History'.
For the time being these lectures are being held in St Mary,s Church, so it seems appropriate to use the Church Building as our main visual aid. Rev. James Pitkin will explain why Churches are as they are;
All are welcome. Entry£5 includes a drink. Full time students are free. This even is on Wednesday 16th January at 8pm, at St Mary's Church Broughton.
My wife Caroline and I enjoy watching the reactions of our three children throughout the performance. They are thoroughly engrossed, lost in the land of make believe. It’s a chance to dream and they will inevitably re-enact parts of this performance back at home. While for me, Dotty is the strongest and most enjoyable to watch, all the cast needs congratulating. “I shall dream about the witch [Malevolent] (Sarah Annakin),” says Henry (2) who is enthralled for the whole performance; a massive achievement. Not a traditional pantomime, this love story with its lessons about beauty, substance and character could well go on to stand the test of time. It is sure to make many happy families this festive season. “I laughed at the same jokes as you did,” Caroline tells me later. We always have done but the challenges of parenthood, especially of late, can leave you feeling that you have lost your sense of humour. On our way back through the city centre we stop and watch the Eastleigh Scout Band playing Christmas carols and it is a perfect end to our little trip to Winchester. Written by Tim Saunders

THE LECTURE Applying Missile Defence Technology to Solve the Near Earth Asteroid Problem - Alexander Godfrey (Lockheed Martin). The Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 caused approximately £10 million worth of damage and led to 1500 people seeking medical attention. The object remained undetected prior to its atmospheric entry and a larger meteor would be catastrophic if it happened over a city. Before panic sets in; some comfort can be taken that systems already exist, or are being developed, that could deal with this threat. With the technology potentially at our fingertips, this presentation primarily explores whether or not there is a strong enough business case for the inhabitants of Earth to pay for such a system. THE SPEAKER Mr Godfrey is a Senior Systems Engineer working at Lockheed Martin UK – Ampthill, technically leading the pursuit and execution of new business civil space programmes. Most notably he has worked on ESA Space Rider, ESA Mars Sample Return Orbiter, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators as well as several classified exoatmospheric programmes.

do astronomers use them, and what kind of results do they get? Using results from dwarf galaxies simulations performed at Southampton University, David will answer these questions and explain what they tell us about these vulnerable little galaxies, and the local universe in general. THE SPEAKER Born in New Zealand, David Williamson
The Deputy Mayor of Test Valley, Councillor Martin Hatley and his wife Jo, concentrated on the new businesses in Stockbridge of which there have been at least 10 in the last 12 months. Many of these are in the Vine development where on Saturday there was music at Vine Pianos, carol singing by the Farleigh School Choir and of course, Father Christmas.
Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event encouraging everyone to “Shop Small, Shop Local.” This is essential for the the survival of high streets like Stockbridge where the majority of shops are small independent retailers.
