Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen
Happy Kitchens were recommended to us by neighbours & within a few minutes of meeting Ben we knew that we wanted him & his team to work on our Kitchen. Ben visited us on 2 occasions so we could view the potential options in both daylight and also at night to ensure the colour scheme worked for us. Ben offered his expert advice without once feeling pressured and was more than happy to accommodate us when we wanted to change our mind on a few final touches. A pleasant surprise was that they fitted all our new appliances without any additional charge. The team who completed the job were a pleasure to deal with & worked exceptionally hard ensuring the kitchen was completed on schedule, the whole team treated our home with the utmost respect & we cannot be more pleased with the result.
Fiona & Jim Hawley Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

olting down a bacon sandwich, he’s stood in his kitchen by the rayburn. The setting of the 200 year old cob cottage, up a track and in a clearing in the woods is enviable, idyllic even. The golden thatch was recently renewed, it’s been re-plumbed and rewired – and there’s no shortage of logs for the woodburner in the beamy sitting room. It’s his home and he feels fortunate, but it’s not his house. It comes with his job. He’s a Keeper. Mid September - first shoot day. Starting with partridge, moving onto pheasant late October - and there’ll be several shoots a fortnight from now until February. The culmination of the full-on seven days a week job nurturing the poults that arrived months before; feeding and protecting them from predation and disease. Coughing and ‘snicking’ means gapes, mustard coloured poo brings bad news of coccidiosis maybe, or hexameta – the list goes on. And on. Then there’s bad weather – and the Keeper, even with the greatest of care, can’t control that. Small wonder there’s a saying “The birds’ll die of everything before they’re shot.” But he’s already been out on his quad at first, misty light; checking the birds, checking the numbered pegs in the fields for the guns to stand by, checking too that the landrover’s fuelled up and hitched to the beaters’ wagon. Also a stressful encounter with a walker who regularly lets his dog run through the woods away from any public footpath. A wayward pet can rid a drive of all the game - and the Guns, paying good money for their sport, won’t be impressed. And the estate owner will want to know why. Gulping down his coffee, he tells his wife “I’ve tried explaining, but he treats the countryside like it’s some sort of quaint theme park for walking his cross-breed in.” On this of all mornings, she can only sympathise and wish him luck. After taking the kids to school she’ll be back to join the beaters later, with the sausage rolls and fruit cake she’s made for elevenses. Checking the weather forecast, she prays the rain will hold off until after the last drive’s whistle blows. Christmas Day.The cottage is in its festive finery of red-berried holly and variegated ivy. A fir tree from the estate sits in the corner of the sitting room and twinkles with lights. The shooting season in full swing,Yule offers no respite. The Keeper’s checked the feeders that morning – and after lunch there’ll be the usual dusk tour around the boundaries with his dogs, keeping the birds from straying. The Boxing Day shoot looms and

although a less formal affair for the owner’s family and friends, the Keeper needs it to go well. The ‘phone rings. Poachers have been spotted and it’s his duty to go and see what’s afoot, although he’s only just sat down with his family to their turkey dinner. Turns out the gang in their pickup are coursing for hares with long dogs. The Keeper’s thankful that they’ve cleared off the estate before he arrives in his landrover. Must be the Christmas spirit, he smiles to himself, relieved. Returning to his lunch just in time for the Queen’s speech, he eats quickly to get out again before sunset. February arrives in deep snow, but the game shooting’s over and the Keeper can ease up a bit once the season’s post mortem is done. The owner’s a decent bloke and they sit together in his study up at the big house, enjoying a very fine single malt and poring over the Game Book. Like a salesman with targets to meet, it’s a numbers game and however convivial this may seem, a keeper is judged by his results. Each and every shoot day, the number of birds in the bag is recorded. At the end of season analysis, the number of birds released or ‘put down’ on the estate, versus the total number shot is calculated. The 45% return the Keeper’s achieved this season is better than average. What happened to the rest who didn’t end up in a game pie, casserole, or roasted and served with stuffing and bread sauce? Some will have wandered onto the roads, to be run over by motorists unwilling to slow down whilst the birds hop up onto the verge. Some will have succumbed to disease. Others, neither quick nor wary enough, will have fed the foxes. Many more will strut around the fields in the Spring – the cock birds in their courting finery, gathering hens to their harem. Verdict: it was a good season and everyone’s happy. The Keeper keeps his job and his home – he might even have a couple of weeks off to wind down from the hard work of the last eight months. Then there’s a long list of jobs to crack on with, not least a new pen for more birds. The owner’s so pleased that he’s expanding the shoot. More birds mean more shoot days. This gives more security for everyone; the game bird rearers, the caterers, the beaters and pickers up, the village pub and hotel – even the remote, local petrol station that’s largely kept going by the 4x4 trade. More work and stress for him too. But this is the life he’s chosen and it’s not a bad one. He’s a Keeper..

LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY – I SHALL ONLY SAY THIS ONCE.. ‘ALLO ‘ALLO COMES TO TITCHFIELD
Following on from the success of comedy shows such as Blackadder, Steptoe & Son and Rising Damp, Titchfield Festival Theatre welcomes to the stage ‘Allo ‘Allo this November. ‘Allo, ‘Allo was written by legendary comedy duo, Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft. Based on the iconic British television series that ran for seven seasons, this hugely popular comedy recounts the adventures of a hapless café
owner, René Artois in occupied France. You can see all of your favourite TV characters in the flesh, including René’s tone-deaf wife Edith, Michelle of the Resistance and the Gestapo officer Herr Flick, in this not to be missed uproarious comedy. The production is based on the TV series, specially adapted for the stage. Audiences will remember and love the humour from the original programmes, watched by millions in

Watch as the unlucky René gets involved in one absurd situation after another, including the hilarious scene when he tries to hide the painting The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies in some knockwurst sausages. Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre said, “’Allo ‘Allo is without doubt one of the best and funniest British TV comedies of all time. The cast have had a great deal of fun practising the French accents as well as rehearsing the many comical scenes. However, like many of the best comedies, the story reflects a serious side of life; and of course the German occupation of France was no laughing matter. Kevin continued, “Although ‘Allo ‘Allo was first broadcast way back in the early eighties, this is a show which will appeal to all ages – guaranteeing a couple of hours of laughs, slapstick humour and outrageously funny situations. We cannot wait for the show to start!” ‘Allo ‘Allo opens on Wednesday 6th November until Saturday 16th November 2019 at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. Matinee performance: Sunday 10th November at 2.30pm. For more information, please go to http:// titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/or contact our Box Office on 01329 556156.

A new face has come to town. Alex Mc Garry has quietly moved into her new studio in the centre of town and can often be seen with her oil paints and easel, painting in the window. Alex doesn’t officially open her gallery until the 5th October when it will become the Alex McGarry Studio and Art Gallery but has been making the premises look wonderful and has already sold three lovely paintings from her collection and has received a huge amount of passing interest. As well as being a successful and award-winning artist, Alex has a background established in retail management, interior design and visual merchandising. More details will soon be available about what Alex plans for Andover, but meanwhile, why not peek if you are passing? ENTERTAINMENT are full of action and she was a great hit with Godolphin pupils and many visiting schools. Laura James hosted a smaller event in the school library to talk about her two series for younger children, Fabio the Flamingo Detective and The Adventures of Pug. She encouraged pupils from Godolphin Prep and across Salisbury to invent their own detective series and played with wonderful collective nouns, a flamboyance of flamingos, a tower of giraffes and a crash of rhinos, to name but a few.

Salisbury's very own thriller writer and Godolphin parent, Mark Dawson, came to chat to older students about the business process of producing great fiction. As he explained, it is not just about having an idea and being able to write it down, there is a whole publishing industry to comprehend and his understanding of publishing online combined with his story telling talent has made him the master of Ebook fiction.
Godolphin's third Literary Festival opened with a talk on Queen Victoria by the TV presenter, Historic Royal Palaces curator and historian, Lucy Worsley. She did not disappoint, and her witty, exuberant delivery revealed the humanity and quirkiness of her subject. The audience was a mix of all ages and a testament to Lucy Worsley's talent at making history accessible; many of the questions came from the young who had clearly listened to every word and still wanted to know more. Lucy had a message of encouragement for one who asked about the
The festival continued with a Creative Writing workshop and a Poetry Evening organised by the girls and the English Department. There were events during the day for pupils from across Salisbury and beyond and during the week almost 900 schoolchildren joined in events in the Performing Arts Centre and Library. Costa winning author Frances Hardinge chose the festival to launch her latest young adult novel, Deeplight, and she gave a fascinating explanation of the fears and loves that inspired her largely submerged tale about a world beneath the waves. Fleur Hitchcock came to speak about her gripping mysteries which appeal to 9-12 year olds; her books
There were two more evening events open to the public, and particularly well attended was the broadcaster and dramatist Lynne Truss' discussion of her writing career and her latest comic detective series. The grand finale of the festival was Joa Studholme's inspirational talk about colour in interior design, for many years she has been Farrow & Ball's chief colourist, inventing colours and giving advice to customers across the world. Her books on colour are sumptuously printed and she encouraged many art students interested in pursuing a career in the world of interior design.

During a period of duty in Moscow as Defence Attaché in the oftensurprising Yeltsin years, Phil Wilkinson had a unique insight into Russia’s turbulent emergence from the Soviet era. Having travelled widely across the former Soviet Union alongside RAF veterans re-visiting their World War 2 operational locations, including to Murmansk and Archangel, he has helped to tell their unique story in a variety of books, magazine articles, a film and lectures to many audiences. He has also researched the other occasions when British armed forces, especially airmen, were engaged in, around, and over Russia between 1918 to the present day.

PEACE BY PIECE AT O2 GUILDHALL SOUTHAMPTON Southampton Philharmonic Choir are pleased to present an inspirational programme of music that sums up a promise of hope from two composers and their view on how they would like the world to be today. The concert takes place at O2 Guildhall Southampton on Saturday 30 November 2019 at 7.30pm. Karl Jenkins The Peacemakers is a large-scale classical work for soprano soloist, chorus, children’s choir and orchestra. The music is classical and very approachable, with world music and jazz influences. The combination of two choirs, wonderful percussion writing and instrumental detail, makes The Peacemakers an international statement of epic proportions. The huge variety of styles, textures and musical material that Jenkins has managed to weave together into a coherent and emotional tour de force produces a profound impact. The work is rapidly becoming as popular and well-known as The Armed Man. The programme also includes Jenkins' composition for string orchestra, Palladio, written in 1995 and Will Todd's No more sorrow, written for chorus, strings, piano and harp in 2014. Jenkins' inspiration was the 16th-century architect, Andrea Palladio reflecting the mathematical harmony and order of Palladio's architecture in musical form. Todd's gentle and lyrical No more sorrow is a setting of words from the biblical Book of Revelation:Todd writes,‘When I wrote this piece it felt as if it came in response to the recovery of my daughter from long term illness. The inspirational text suggests a promise of hope beyond dark times.’ Tickets: £13.05, £19.65, £25.15 with concessions are available from O2Guildhall Southampton box office. WELLBEING
TAKE THE LOAD OFF YOUR PELVIC FLOOR When the pelvic floor is weak, dysfunctional and a bit leaky, the go-to solution is usually to try to strengthen it from below, ie. lifting the pelvic floor with exercises. This is often not enough as it doesn’t address the load coming down from above. The pressure from the organs above continues to add to the dysfunction and can result in prolapse. We are obviously designed to carry our organs in our pelvis on the pelvic floor, so why do they get so ‘heavy’ and cause leaking and prolapse? It’s all to do with the posture, movement and alignment. When the alignment of the body deteriorates, even if it is the head that starts to come forwards more than it is neutral, this increases the pressure down into the chest, abdomen and down into the pelvis. The pressure has to go somewhere. For some people it may be a disc bulge or a hernia, for others it’s a tummy gap (diastasis recti), stress incontinence or prolapse. Breathing well has the power to improve your alignment, reduce tension in your neck and shoulders, and reduce the pressure on the pelvic floor. The efficient use of the diaphragm takes the load off the pelvic floor. TRY THIS: 4/7 BREATHING Sitting or lying, place one hand on your upper chest and one hand on your lower ribs. Breathe in for 4 seconds, pause and breathe out for 7 seconds. Aim to keep your upper chest (upper hand) as still as possible, limiting any up-down movement of the chest, and focusing on the in-
out (lower hand) movement instead. This will ease any tension in your neck and shoulders. Add in a relax of the pelvic floor on your inhale and a gentle lift on an exhale and you have a fantastically stimulating exercise for your deep internal organs and a little strength and conditioning for your pelvic floor.Your pelvic floor works in tandem with your diaphragm. As you inhale the diaphragm descends, the organs are pushed outwards and downwards, and the pelvic floor descends and widens to accommodate. During exhalation the diaphragm lifts and the pelvic floor and stomach muscles contract to push the organs upwards again. This synchronized movement between diaphragm and pelvic floor is absolutely crucial to the organs, and even mental health as it soothes the nervous system. It provides a natural massage to the gut contents, aiding digestion, it ensures blood circulation and drainage, and helps regulate part of the nervous system responsible for the stress response. Diastasis, prolapse and incontinence all have a pressure component to their cause. Therefore learning to exhale on exertion when exercising helps to ‘blow off ’ some of the pressure and put the pelvic organs in an ascended position. This is particularly important to learn for lifting and impact sport or exercise. Practice breathing in sync with your pelvic floor daily. If you would like to learn more about how you can improve your pelvic health through education, discussion and exercise, I will be running my first 6 week women’s health course in January. Please call the practice and ask to go on the list to be the first to know all the details about the WoMo course. WHY NOT GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND BECOME A GOVERNOR?
an infant and junior federation in the New Forest. She was on the board, more, she says, for her enthusiasm and willingness to learn than for any specific skills she had. She has since served as the training and development governor and is currently Chair of Governors. Back in 2014, with a little boy soon to start in Reception Year, Debbie was interested in finding out how the school system functioned. She said: “I asked a lot of questions and was told by the Chair of Governors that that best way to learn about the school was to become a governor myself, so I did. It has really opened my eyes to how it works behind the scenes.
As the new school year gets underway, schools across Hampshire are looking for volunteers to help them to be the best and make a positive difference to children’s education by becoming a school governor. With 524 schools and academies in the county, there are more than 6,000 governors supporting them. However, while many schools have a full quota of governors, others have up to three vacancies on their board. We spoke to Debbie Sawyer, a governor at
People volunteering to be governors do not need to have previous experience. All that is required is to be over 18, and to have enthusiasm, commitment and time. Checklists can guide you through the important questions to ask such as staff qualifications and experience, staffing ratios and what a typical session should look like. Other items on the list may include things to look out for: how happy do children appear, are staff attentive and is the setting welcoming? We feel passionately that the right decision is all about finding a nursery setting that feels the right fit for you and your child. REVOLUTIONARY BREAST CANCER TREATMENT MACHINE PRESENTED TO ROYAL HAMPSHIRE COUNTY HOSPITAL
Funds generated by The Hampshire Country & Garden Festival held at Bere Mill in June, have enabled the Hampshire Medical Fund to purchase a Sysmex Sentimag Monitor that will hugely improve a breast cancer patient’s experience of surgery. The monitor was presented to the Royal Hampshire Hospital in Winchester on Wednesday by representatives of the Hampshire Country and Garden Festival and its gold sponsor JM Finn Investment and Wealth Management (who recently opened a Winchester office), together with the Hampshire Medical Fund. The Hampshire Country & Garden Festival committee chose to raise money to purchase a Sysmex Sentimag monitor and owing to the success of the festival they raised £55,000 through very generous sponsorships, donations and support. This exceeded expectations and enabled two machines to be bought for hospitals in Winchester and Basingstoke, which are expected to benefit more than 200 patients a year at each location. The Sysmex Sentimag Monitor is an innovation for future breast surgery as it enables intra-operative detection tiny stainless steel grains called Magseeds which are inserted up to 30 days before surgery to help the surgeon locate the breast cancers to be surgically removed. This makes a great difference to the patient’s experience as previously they would have had to have a wire fitted which delayed surgery. This will also mean improved efficiency in theatre timetabling. Another use of this machine is a Magtrace in which a tiny iron filings are injected into a patient up to seven days prior to surgery, to identify whether or not the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and if so how far, which will help inform the decision on how to treat the cancer. Siobhan Laws, Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital said: "This machine is changing people with breast cancer's lives. It means fewer appointments prior to surgery, which in turn helps with appointment scheduling and therefore reduces stress levels for both patients and surgeons and makes the operating theatres run more efficiently. By having this piece of equipment in Winchester with the Magtrace facility, it means that patients no longer have to make trips to multiple hospitals at an already stressful time in their lives just prior to surgery.’ Holly Kingsford, Committee Member for the Hampshire Country and Garden Festival commented:‘We’re delighted that money raised by our show is being put to such a good use by the breast cancer teams at the Royal Hampshire hospital and Basingstoke and North Hampshire hospital. We’re very thankful to JM Finn, for being our gold sponsor for the last two years, as through their very generous sponsorship we have been able to grow the event. We had a fantastic show this year with just under 4,000 people enjoying the entertainment, demonstrations and workshops, gift and garden stalls and delicious food and drink. We are already planning next year’s event, which will be held on Sunday 14th June 2020, where we hope to be able raise money to buy more equipment for the Hampshire Medical Fund.’ Picture shows the Sysmex Sentimag Monitor with, (left - right) Holly Kingsford, Hampshire Country & Garden Festival Committee Member, Simon Tufnell Investment Director,JM Finn Head of Winchester Siobhan Laws Consultant Breast Surgeon, Natalie Chand Consultant Breast Surgeon, Peter Walsh Head of Fund Raising, Hampshire Medical Fund For info on next festival, please visit: www.hampshiregardenfestival.co.uk
