would simply ask that internal doors are open so we do not need to touch any surfaces. Extended discussion on properties will take place outside where possible. For viewings we ensure that doors are open in advance of a viewing, we only let 2 adults, from the same household, in a property at any one time, and we leave a sensible period of time between viewings. The viewing agent will wipe down any surfaces or door handles touched, and all viewing agents have a pack with sanitizer and disinfectant. After over 25 years in the industry we are experienced at making the viewing as effective as possible for the applicant and the vendor or landlord. As a company we have always prided ourselves on getting the right applicant for the right property.

The focus at The Country House Company is to ensure that our viewings and appraisals are carried out safely and efficiently. All the regulations in place for COVID 19 precautions may seem daunting but actually are quick, effective and inspire confidence during a viewing or appraisal and we have an efficient system in place for all members of the team.

We are experiencing an exceptional demand for houses at the moment to sell and to let. We have had offers on houses confirmed within a week of launch, sales offer agreed on the first day of viewings and a couple of rentals booked even before the property has been marketed. These are busy times so if you do have a property to sell or are looking at the possibility of letting out your house please do call us on 023 92 632275. Marishelle Butler

Having ensured in writing that no individual involved with a viewing or appraisal are displaying symptoms of Covid 19, are self-isolating or have been in contact with anyone who is self-isolating, we ask all parties to wear gloves and mask and we provide our own re-usable Country House Company masks. For a market appraisal we will have gained a lot of information on a property before we arrive and

STOCKBRIDGE OSTEOPATHIC PRACTICE

Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy Emma Wightman, registered osteopath and antenatal teacher. A gentle, hands on approach for newborns through to adulthood and in pregnancy.

Also Massage Therapy Pilates, 1 to 1 and small group Homeopathy Naturopathy After the age of 30, men and women lose up to 5% of muscle per decade. Age-related muscle loss, known as sarcopenia, happens as you get older, and it starts much earlier than you think. After the age of 30, you lose as much as 3-8% of your muscle mass with each passing decade, and the decline worsens after age 60. Sarcopenia doesn’t just affect your athletic performance or how you look in your swimmers. It also impacts your longevity. Sarcopenia, is a major cause of frailty as you age. It’s crucial to have some type of daily physical activity that builds up your strength so you avoid frailty. The good news is, sarcopenia is avoidable and even, to some degree, reversible. Don’t be scared of ‘bulking up’. Toned muscles are strong, functioning muscles that will protect you from injury, get you up off the floor if you fall and create good forces on your bones and joints protecting you from osteoporosis and arthritis. Here’s how to preserve the muscle you have and build or regain what you have lost: • Move it or lose it In the ‘Blue Zones’ of the world, where people live the longest and healthiest of lives, they are constantly on the move. Not going to the gym or fitness classes, but rigorous gardening, walking, lifting, foraging, farming, cooking, hunting Westernised environments are not set up to encourage movement, so you must consciously add it into your day. • Eat more protein Protein is the building blocks of muscle. It is essential for repair and muscle growth. Ideally protein should make up 35-40% of your plate, and you can find it in high concentrations in grass-fed beef, organic eggs, cottage and ricotta cheese, poultry and low-mercury fish. • Consume Omega 3 Ward off sarcopenia by consuming omega-3 fatty acids to speed up protein metabolism in your body. • Balance your hormones Hormone regulation is a key component to managing muscle mass. Oestrogen preserves muscle, testosterone builds muscle, and growth hormones contribute to repair and muscular performance - all of which assist to combat sarcopenia. Hormone levels are particularly important to assess if you are a woman in your peri and postmenopausal

years because any hormonal imbalance will affect your muscle loss most. Make the most of your hormonal fluctuations if your periods are regular by training hard in your low hormone phase during and just after your period, and work on technique and form during the high hormones phase in the 2 weeks before your period to optimise your performance and muscle gains. • Lift heavy stuff . You must provide the stimulus to the body to build muscle. Aim to do some form of strength or resistance training 2 to 3 times a week to build and maintain strong muscles. If you’re not sure where to start just drop me a line and I can help! The added benefit of building muscle is they can be part of maintaining or working towards a healthy weight. Muscles are hungry, 1lb of muscle burns 100 kcal! The more muscle you have the more calories you burn and the better balanced your body composition will be. But conversely if you have already lost muscle you will therefore be needing less calories. So if you are eating the same amount of food but feeling like you are gaining weight, it may be your body is needing less calories as you could have lost up to 5lbs of muscle by the time you are 40. You can start today: Chose the stairs every time, sit on the floor in the evenings, carry your shopping, walk further, stand to take phone calls, create a vegetable garden, grind your own spices, knead your own bread, split and carry your own logs, squat to load the washing machine... If you would like a simple, home-based weight-lifting program to get you started, go to our website for our free downloadable workout. Emma Wightman www.the-sop.com

Sun, summer, beach and sand Enjoy the season without compromise with our Soleil range which will also surround you in a fresh scent. For many people, summer is their favourite time of year. It is warm and sunny, the days are getting longer and people like spending them at the beach, in the infinity pool or bathing in the local lake. Their skin gets a nice tan, their hair shines with natural highlights. But summer also has its drawbacks: dry and damaged hair, sunburn and dehydrated skin. For you to enjoy the sunny days without problems, our Soleil range offers everything that your sunny heart desires. With ideal preparation, perfect protection and the right aftersun care, nothing can stop you from enjoying the beautiful weather.

The Grosvenor Hotel The Pride Of Stockbridge Once Again

Back in 1888, when Tom Cannon, colourful owner of The Grosvenor Hotel, had just won the Grand National with Playfair at 40/1, Stockbridge and the Georgian dwelling at its centre were enjoying their heyday. Monarchs, noblemen and women, and the racing cognoscenti of the day would descend on Stockbridge for the last week of June to enjoy Stockbridge Races held at Danebury and the town would be buzzing with excitement. Today Stockbridge and its centrepiece hotel are enjoying some of that buzz once again! More fishing, shooting, walking and boutique shopping today than horseracing, but who knows what the future might hold? The hotel has been lovingly brought back to life over the past 18 months and the town is thriving despite the best efforts of this invisible virus. Reopened on August 1st, outstanding head chef Neil Cooper has delighted foodies with a mix of seafood and local fayre. The succulent Brixham Lobster, aioli and chips has gone down a storm with 600 lobsters cracked, steamed and devoured in August alone! Guests and passers by have enjoyed Stockbridge Beach and been taken aback as they have entered the tranquility of the walled garden with its calming water features, blossom and birdsong. Quite a treat only yards from the bustling high street.

pieces, fused with colour, these rooms have proved very popular. So too have the 3 larger second floor rooms in the main house, The Bibury, The Cannon and St Peter’s, that have been designed to retain some of the grandeur of those halcyon days gone by.

Some of the finest rooms I have seen in 30 years of global travel

Nick Travel photographer - Madrid Reopened at the end of August, our elegant Market Room, ideal for weddings and celebrations, is looking a picture, resplendent with a full height 9 panelled verre eglomise mirror, depicting the mayflies and bulrushes of the River Test. A far cry from its look in centuries gone by, where sheep were bought and sold in their thousands inside the very same walls. Weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries, celebratory dinners and Christmas parties might not be quite what they were in previous years for the time being but with 4 large reception rooms and a private walled garden, we have plenty of space for social distancing and would be delighted to discuss what might be possible. So come and see for yourself what the excitement is all about or be in touch to arrange a private tour of our event spaces. From all of us at the Grosvenor Stockbridge

EDUCATION

Rewarding talent and achievements at school All Embley scholars become members of the school’s Nightingale Scholars’ Society which meets regularly and follows a programme of talks by experts on a variety of topics. Recent lecturers have included Dr Jon Copley, marine biologist and scientific advisor for the BBC’s Blue Planet II and Professor Andy Stanford-Clark, IBM’s Chief Technology Officer. Scholars attend small group tutorials with scholar mentors and complete mini projects each term. These projects help build a portfolio of work which become invaluable as a record of work and for use at university interviews.

Academic ambition forms the cornerstone of an Embley education and our scholarship programme is instrumental in supporting this ethos by acknowledging pupil potential and rewarding outstanding achievement in a range of curriculum areas. Each year Embley offers a limited number of scholarship awards to new and current pupils entering Year 7, 9 and Sixth Form in academia, art and design, drama, music and sport following a competitive application process which involves assessments and interviews. Scholars are nurtured, mentored and supported as they continue to develop their specialism at Embley. In return we expect the scholar to have a strong work ethic, to contribute positively to the life of the school and our local community and to inspire others. Not only do we expect scholars to build their own skills but also to take on a wider role and encourage their contemporaries. This may take the form of a music scholar helping to support a less experienced musician, an academic scholar heading up a debating team, a drama scholar leading workshops for younger performers or a sports’ scholar representing Embley at regional or national level.

Our academic scholars have a thirst for knowledge and love of learning; pupils are curious, creative, read widely and are committed to their studies. Our art and design scholars use their creativity and flair for design to explore and experiment with their innovations. Our drama scholars have focus, discipline and passion and, together with our talented music scholars, play a leading role in performing arts across the school community. While our sports scholarship provides a bespoke programme that is designed for aspiring sportsmen and women. The goal is to instil a competitive and determined sporting culture that will yield success on the sports field, while inspiring traits of resilience, commitment and ambition in the classroom so that scholars leave Embley as rounded, aspiring individuals. If you would like further information about our scholarship programme and application process please visit www.embley.org.uk or contact the Admissions Team (admissions@embley.org.uk). Please note that new pupils must first register with the school before applying for a scholarship (the deadline for September 2021 entry registrations and scholarship applications is Friday 27 November 2020). The school is also running a number of in-person open events and virtual events this Autumn. Please visit Embley’s website for further information and to book.

EDUCATION our provision for boarding and day students and touch on the ethos of the Sixth Form at Godolphin, which supports the success of our students during Sixth Form study and beyond.

Godolphin Sixth Virtual Welcome Evening This year, our popular Sixth Form Welcome Evening is going virtual, with an interactive online event that showcases the very best of what the Sixth Form at Godolphin has to offer. The event, which will run through the Zoom platform, will be hosted by the Head of Sixth Form at Godolphin, David Hallen, who will give you an overview of the myriad of the exciting and engaging academic, pastoral and co-curricular opportunities available to all of our Sixth Form students. He will also outline the way the Sixth Form operates day to day,

Godolphin’s Academic Deputy, Chris Hillman, will also present a breakdown of the academic options available as well as offer an update on our recent exam successes and an overview of the current academic landscape. We are rightly proud of our outstanding track record of results in the Sixth Form, and the Virtual Welcome Evening is a great opportunity for you to see how your academic ambitions can be fulfilled with us. Of course, the academic aspect of the Sixth Form experience is only part of the story, and you’ll have the opportunity to hear about our highly regarded Elizabeth Godolphin Award, which is at the heart of our Sixth Form offer. Each student participates in this programme, which includes modules on entrepreneurship, contemporary politics and world affairs, online safety, study skills, equality, diversity and inclusion and personal empowerment. This not only by delivering an alternative learning programme last term but also by providing centre assessed grades so that each individual student gets the results that they deserve. Parents too deserve to be acknowledged and thanked. The strong sense of community at Godolphin, so often commented upon, has helped us all through these challenging times.

Excellent Results at Godolphin, for an exceptional year We are very pleased to announce that once again Godolphin students have worked with dedication and purpose during their time in the Sixth Form and have gained an excellent set of results. A great deal of hard work has gone into the awarding of these grades and we are incredibly proud of all that they have achieved. This has been the most crucial time of their school careers and our students deserve to be judged fairly. Teaching staff have given their time and energy throughout the year,

Rightly, the focus now turns to next steps for our leavers, and we are pleased to say that the vast majority have achieved the places they need to further their education on courses of their choice. We have students with confirmed places to go on to study diverse subjects ranging from French and Spanish to Physics; Commercial Music to Engineering; Actuarial Science to Fine Art; Biological Sciences to Ancient History and Classical Civilisation; Psychology to History of Art; and Economics to English.

programme regularly includes appearances from guest speakers and experts in their fields, and you’ll be able to hear from one of our students about the positive and lasting impact it has, when delivered alongside an engaging course of study. Our Head of Bright Futures will also be presenting at this live event, giving an overview of our careers provision, which offers a tremendous range of support for progression to university, apprenticeships, further study and employment. At Godolphin, we really do believe that your Sixth Form experience is an education for life, and our Virtual Welcome Evening is a great opportunity to start planning for your future with us. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions in a live Q&A, and to arrange live visits and discussions following the event. For more information, please contact Head of Sixth Form, David Hallen, on hallend@ godolphin.org.

in appropriate qualifications. There have been outstanding performances from Georgina Clark, Maisie Molyneux, Brigitte Han, Isobel Horsfield, Cecilia Lockyer, Olivia Bai and Rachel Xu. As further detail is available regarding the appeals process, especially on the basis of mock grades, we will continue to evaluate the statistical process used to determine the grades, and proceed accordingly.

These courses will be studied at a range of Universities including Oxford, Birmingham, UCL, Durham, Exeter, Warwick, Bristol, University of the Arts London, LSE and Edinburgh.

Head, Emma Hattersley, commented “these students have shown great fortitude, especially over the past six months. It is only right now that their diligence and sheer hard graft over the last two years is recognised by the examination boards, enabling them to move on to the next stage of their lives with confidence. This was a bright year group so I am pleased that in the main, their efforts have been rewarded, although I do have concerns as to how some of the grades have been calculated. Now is a time for calmness and student support as we work through the statistics and understand the implications for each individual. I am immensely proud of them all.”

Although the statistical process imposed by the examination boards has both increased and decreased some grades we are able to report an excellent set of overall results with 25% A* grades and 50% A* to A, including Distinctions

Andover Schools join forces to celebrate GCSE Results 2020

S

econdary schools across Andover are joining forces this year to celebrate the achievements of the class of 2020. The collaborative approach has been designed to recognise students’ success beyond just their academic results. The emphasis this year on GCSE results day will be to put other qualities and attributes in the spotlight such as personal responsibility, resilience and strength of character. With the government cancelling the summer series of GCSE exams, Andover’s Year 11 students did not have the opportunity to independently determine their own academic outcomes. This year Ofqual (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) asked schools to use their professional experience to make a fair and objective judgement of the grade they believe students would have achieved had they sat their exams. These judgements (called Centre Assesses Grades) were based on a full range of evidence including work done in class, non-exam assessments, course work and homework. To ensure the grades are fair between schools, the exam boards used a standardisation model developed with Ofqual. Following the government U-turn on Monday students will received their Centre Assessed Grade unless the government’s computer algorithm gave a higher grade. Determined to ensure today was a celebration across the town and in Stockbridge and that their students were recognised for their achievements and more, the Headteachers had the following to say: Harrow Way Community School Commenting on how this year has tested students in immeasurable ways Harrow Way Community School Headteacher Michael Serridge said: “We are incredibly proud of Harrow Way’s class of 2020 and we are proud of the results they have achieved. Unlike previous years though these students had to dig deep and find inner strength while coping with a very brutal end to their time here at secondary school. They coped admirably with their exams, their last day at school and their prom all being cancelled. Being the class of 2020 is in fact a badge of honour and I hope all Year 11 students from Harrow Way and across our town wear that badge with pride. For me, they are the exceptional year group, the one which will take other qualities on to their further and higher education and their ultimate careers.” John Hanson Community School John Hanson Community School Headteacher Russell Stevens said: “I am incredibly proud of each and every one of our Year 11 students; it has been a difficult few months for them. They have been denied the opportunity to show the quality of their educational experience, by actually sitting their final examinations. Just as importantly, they did not experience the celebratory ‘rites of passage’ that Year 11 students would in a ‘normal’

20

year – Leavers’ assembly and prom being the 2 stand out events, but also just getting to say goodbye. Therefore the opportunity to join us in school today to collect their results, is more important than ever. I wish them every success for the next stage of their educational journey, and I look forward to them returning in more normal times to tell me about their ongoing successes.” Smannell Field School Amanda Edney Headteacher, Smannell Field School said: “We have been really pleased with all of our students who have, throughout the recent lockdown period, made significant efforts to quite literally ‘keep calm and carry on’. However, we are especially proud of our Year 11 cohort who have taken the disruption in their stride. Many of our pupils have overcome considerable adversity over the past few years but have shown grit and tenacity, demonstrating real resilience and working right up until the last moment to ensure they achieve of their best. We will continue to work with our Year 11 students until they are settled and thriving in their new settings whether this be college, employment or training. They, alongside their teachers and tutors, should be very proud of their achievements.” Test Valley School

Interim Head of School at Test Valley, Toni Wilden commented: “I only had the pleasure of working with the class of 2020 for the briefest of time but even in that limited time it was obvious this was a group of very special young people. The colleagues of Test Valley feel deeply saddened that these outstanding young people have been robbed of their chance to really prove themselves in the summer 2020 exam series, something I know many were looking forward to doing after working so hard. Sad too is the fact they have missed out on the usual rites of passage that all Year 11 deserve to experience. That said, we are proud of the resilience and determination they continue to show and of the many exam successes we celebrated today. The school motto “in pursuit of personal excellence” has most certainly been demonstrated through the results achieved by so many today. The colleagues of Test Valley wish the class of 2020 the best of luck in the next stage of their lives.” Winton Community Academy Helen Jones, Headteacher for Winton Community Academy said: “Everyone at Winton is so proud of the resilience that our Year 11 students have shown. One of the core values of our school is to "Be Unusually Brave" and our Year 11s have certainly had to show bravery this year as they completed their secondary education in the strangest of ways. We are delighted at how well they have done and we know that as they move on to further education they will continue to prove what a special year group they are. Everyone will remember the class of 2020 as an exceptional group of young people who dealt with the disruption to their exams with great fortitude. We wish our Winton students, and indeed all the students in Andover, our best wishes for the future and we look forward to hearing about all the amazing things they go on to accomplish.”

O

wowow.” Thud, thud. The sounds dragged her, somewhat gratefully it has to be said, from a deep sleep once again populated by gangsters, drug lords and rednecks. Late night binge-watching of Ozark during lockdown had probably been a mistake. But there was lots of life in the old dog yet, seemingly; himself was hopping energetically around the bed clutching his foot. One of the spaniels, after an initial puzzled, head-on-one-side look, collected its bone and sauntered off. Having trodden on the canine equivalent of a Lego landmine herself many times, she winced in sympathy. “If it’s any consolation, the bone might have been a sort of present left for you by the bed. That’s quite sweet really.” She suggested. Casting her a deeply dubious look, he said “Should the dogs even be in the bedroom?” “Well, when Queen Victoria died, one of her dogs was with her on the bed till the very end” she defended. He looked mildly sceptical and hobbled off to the bathroom. When they reconvened downstairs for breakfast a little later, the dogs sat expectantly by the table, unfailing optimism in the eyes that followed fork to mouth. On the rare occasion that no morsel came their way, there was never resentment - and she loved that about them. She tossed a bit of bacon rind to each. “Did you know” she shared more gleaned trivia “that ‘Dog Days’, those hot days of summer through July and into August, are so called because in ancient times they coincided with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star?” He did not know that - and said so between mouthfuls of sausage and egg. Sultry and heavy, she felt they were surely the best of days; glimpsed reminders of those ethereal, lazy summers of childhood. On days like those, her hot dogs liked best to stretch out in the nearest muddy puddle. But she didn’t mind. They’d taken to greeting her with a slipper each; cheering after a dog’s breakfast of a day. And sometimes even from the same pair. And it didn’t bother her that, dog tired after a walk, they usually chose to flop down somewhere inconveniently underfoot. Often finding herself stretching awkwardly to get to the taps or unable to open the fridge, she’d let her sleeping dogs lie, they looked so peaceful. It really was a dog’s life.

26

Another recently acquired snippet came to her; “Mary Queen of Scots went to the executioner’s block with her beloved Skye terrier hidden beneath her skirts. After Mary’s death, it refused to leave and lay, rather gruesomely, in the blood between her shoulders and severed head. Eventually removed by force, the dog pined for its mistress and died shortly thereafter. Poor little thing” she announced with feeling. Raising eyebrows, he put down his coffee cup “Well, that’s jolly. Darling, have you eaten an encyclopaedia? A dog-eared volume of D to E perhaps?” A little sarcastic, she thought, when she was generously sharing her new-found knowledge. “Algorithms.” She said loftily “At least I assume that’s what it is. I was looking at some random dog stuff online and, like magic, it’s given me endless variations on that theme. Although weirdly fascinating, I’m not sure that’s not a tiny bit sinister. The internet’s awash with tales of ‘man’s best friend’ – a term first attributed to Frederick the Great, by the way.” Doggedly she continued with her theme. “Example: Lord Carnarvon’s dog howled and then died at the exact moment that its master died - on a different continent, no less. Tremendously sad – but how about that?” “Well, I knew that one actually – protracted childhood obsession with Tutankhamun. We are famously a nation of hopelessly besotted lovers of dogs. Who love us back. Well, mostly anyway.” “What do you mean, mostly?” Her idle browsing had revealed only canine love, devotion and sacrifice. He elaborated. “Apparently Richard II had a greyhound called Mathe. It was said that he was his master’s shadow and “knew no one else”, until the day that Flint Castle was besieged and Henry Bolingbroke came to deliver his ultimatum to the King. Mathe apparently came bounding into the room and proceeded to fawn all over the victorious Henry, completely ignoring the defeated King Richard. From that day the hound only followed Henry IV, as he became. Poor Richard, talk about insult heaped upon injury – that must have been a really tough day. And who knows, perhaps, to Mathe, Henry still smelled tantalizingly of the roast boar sandwich he’d had for lunch, or something.” He stood up. “Thank you for breakfast, darling. I’m off to see a man about a dog. Haha.” She smiled as he walked past the spaniels, fondling their silky ears. They fawned adoringly around his legs and, dogging his footsteps, followed him out of the kitchen. He did, after all, smell deliciously of sausages…
