GARDEN As the business is still new we are evaluating franchises and local needs but so far we have niche franchises across leading brands such as, Wessex Machinery, Countax, ECHO power tools, Ariens mowers, and Hustler mowers. With our contacts and experience we can source many items and have already secured New Holland tractors and New Holland diggers for clients, Cobra mowers, John Deere ride on mowers and many many more.

During lockdown we have worked as safely and remotely as we can to collect and deliver machines making the whole process easy and efficient for our customers”. As the business grows we aim to employ locally and anticipate taking on an apprentice later this year.
A T H Machinery A T H Machinery was founded in August 2019 by Tim Lane, following a career working for a large regional and national machinery company. Experience gained included working in the dealership and distributor business focussing on agricultural, groundcare, construction, and garden machinery. Based in central Hampshire, Brightside Farm, Broughton the business has one simple mission – to become the dealer of choice for your machinery needs. This includes garden machinery, estates machinery, tractors, mowers, digger hire, agricultural machinery, service sales and parts.
With extensive facilities including a showroom, small machinery workshop (435 square feet) and a large machinery workshop (1500 square feet) it really is a very exciting time in the business. WELLBEING Why the practice of floor-sitting is linked to health, mobility and longevity
As the days start to shorten and we begin to spend more time indoors curled up on the sofa with family, friends, or with a book, phone or TV to entertain us, it is still possible to strengthen and mobilise our bodies. Swopping the sofa or chair for the floor is a simple solution for adding more movement to your day. Okinawa, Japan is one of the 5 ‘blue zones’ where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives and is home to the world’s longest-lived women. In Okinawa, people traditionally sit on the floor to read, eat, talk, and relax instead of sitting in chairs. They sit and get up from the floor hundreds of times per day. This exercises their legs, back, and core in a natural way as they get up and down all day long. Sitting on the floor also improves posture and increases overall strength, flexibility, and mobility.
I have mats and cushions readily available and in eye-sight to both remind me and to use. And the beauty of floor sitting is that every 1520 minutes or so, your body tells you to change position and move. There is a Danish twin study that concluded that the average person’s lifespan is 20% determined by genetics and 80% determined by environment and lifestyle. This is great news for us as it puts us very much in the driving seat of our future. We are not at the mercy of our genes as we may have originally thought, and by making small changes to our environment we can make positive changes to our health. Visit our website to access and download our free instructional 5 minute video I have put together for you with lots of ideas and modifications for floor sitting. If you are intrigued by the concept of ‘Blue Zones’ and want to know more about how to improve your health and longevity, visit Dan Buettner’s website www.bluezones.com
Studies correlate the ability to ‘sit and rise from the floor without support’ with a longer life expectancy. Sitting on the floor also

own home or office. Covid-19 has had an effect but it’s made us adapt and find other ways to work which in itself is a great skill to have” added Katie. The group is aimed at businesswomen running their own business or working in other businesses and offers support, not just from a working perspective but also sometimes a personal one as well.
“We plan to grow and help more local women in business this year” was the message from AWIB President Katie Brooks as the club starts its 29th year. It has been a rollercoaster 12 months for AWIB – Andover Women in Business – with the lockdown stopping the face to face meetings plus social gatherings, together with several members retiring, however this year’s President is determined to help the club thrive and to support other local businesses. “It has been a bumpy ride with Covid-19 and the lockdown happening but with the really strong committee we have now, we plan to grow and make a difference locally” said Katie. “We already have some inspirational speakers lined up for the coming year as well as social events albeit from the comfort of your

develops musculoskeletal fitness. People that live in the ‘blue zones’ of the world move every 20 minutes because their environments are set up that way. Their environments literally move them. In our chair-dwelling culture, most of our bodies no longer move enough at the ankles, knees, hips, and spine to accommodate a variety of floor-sitting positions. Good news, though! We can restore these motions with a gradual, supportive practice. Adjust your environment for more dynamic sitting I am gradually reducing the number of chairs in my home. I made these changes for the same kind of reasons people get rid of the junk food in their house when they want to eat better. I move more and in different ways when the standard chair isn’t available, and in this way, my environment moves me.
“A question that often crops up is why a networking group for women in business? It’s to provide a support network to other businesswomen from a woman’s view. We don’t exclude men and in fact many of our guest speakers are men” she explained. How It All Started The idea for AWIB started in May 1992 when an article placed in the Andover Advertiser invited local businesswomen in the area to a meeting of businesswomen at the Ashley Court Hotel. The idea was the brainchild of Yvonne Povah, joint proprietor of the hotel. Yvonne thought, as a local businesswoman herself, that a club would be an excellent way for local businesswomen to unite, exchange views and more importantly to provide support and encouragement where needed. 28 years have since passed but the ethos of the club still remains: supporting other members. Awarding winning chef and proprietor Michael Fox didn’t rest on his laurels during the lockdown. He spent many hours trying out new recipes for delicious lunches and homemade cakes. The result is a regularly varied menu featuring both new ideas with seasonal ingredients as well as old favourites. The menu changes every three weeks and is designed to suit all tastes. ‘The Government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme proved popular with our customers,’ says Michael. ‘It gave everybody a chance to see how we had adapted so that they could enjoy themselves in a safe environment. We also noticed that with the discount our regulars were more prepared to try something different and that has encouraged me to change the menu more frequently. So far the reaction has been positive.’ The courtyard has a number of enticing independent shops which, together with the Mill Gallery and the upstairs individual studios, are open offering a huge selection of artisan crafts, jewellery and homewares to tempt the discerning buyer. This month there is also a new exhibition, Natural Elements, in the Main Gallery showcasing the work of nine local artists. Only a few minutes walk from the City centre car park and station Fisherton Mill is open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Hampshire Art Studio Hampshire Art studio on the banks of the River Dever at Bransbury has art classes for adults of all abilities. Whatever your interest have a look at the Hampshire Art studio website for their mix of classes, from beginners classes, to Masterclasses with experts in their fields, as well as Life Drawing to Experimental Drawing. And many, many more. “We wanted classes to continue throughout lockdown so we adapted our studio and taught online via ZOOM. It has been a huge success and has encouraged all abilities to be creative. Online classes have helped those unable to leave their homes, the front line workers , as well as more mature artists who are looking for new avenues.” Zoom classes are definitely here to stay. Hampshire Art studio has an Art Club for anyone to join. There is a monthly fee giving access to weekly classes offering workshops and life drawing; and if you can’t make the class a video is available. Kate Measham’s classes called, “On the Shoulders of Giants”, uses some of the wonderful paintings in the permanent collection of the local Southampton City Gallery. She uses these works as the starting point for practical classes, and your own paintings. New this term is Dr Gail Loudon's course called Art, Creativity and Mindfulness. The past few months have drawn attention to the challenges that anxiety, of any sort, can bring to bear on all our lives. Mindfulness, art and creativity can help with stress reduction, loss of confidence and that feeling of losing control. Hair Today and Blonde Tomorrow? © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2020
D
riving into town, she thought “Have I got a clean mask?” The things we say now… And Coronavirus also meant hand sanitizer in her hand bag, the car, the kitchen, the bathroom. Not to mention at the bank, the garden centre, the car boot sales. Hand sanitizer everywhere. Should have bought shares in the companies who manufacture the stuff – damn. Now, in the lobby of her hairdresser she encountered sanitizer, a man in a mask and an electronic thermometer. The Covid trinity. She’d known her hairdresser for a long time, so she was fairly certain those were his eyes above his mask. And, fairly certain he was smiling, she smiled back from behind her own mask and sat down in front of the mirror. Both pairs of eyes looked at the long, long roots of her hair. During lockdown, watching her roots grow and the grey grow with it had been sobering. Older than she thought. And fantasising about a hair appointment had replaced the one about moving to Byron Bay and buying a house next to the Hemsworths. But finally she was seated in the time machine chair, ready to turn the clock back on her hair. Goody! Rather helpfully, she felt, she’d sent advance pictures to her hairdresser. Pictures of a celeb sporting long dark roots with artfully streaked blonde ends. The effect was called Ombre. Or was it Balayage? She wasn’t sure and didn’t really care. Himself had liked the hair in the picture, but the person wearing the hair – not so much. So having carefully explained that she wanted to look the same, but different, her long suffering hairdresser began to work his magic. Conversation was a little slow, though. No-one had been on holiday. Or got married. Or done anything much, seen

anyone much. She didn’t personally know someone who had caught ‘it’ and neither did he – but maybe they both had caught it and didn’t know? Having exhausted the available topics, they fell silent. Her head swiftly became the repository of little foil parcels, so neat, oblong and flat. Like old fashioned sticks of chewing gum. But now the man behind the mask was unwrapping some of them and shaking his head. Hard to see his expression, she was now fairly certain he’d stopped smiling. This did not augur well. “What have you been using on your hair?” Somewhat taken aback, she hesitated for a nano-second. “Um… shampoo?” There had been lots of things that were hard to get during lockdown; toilet paper, obviously, because Covid-19 gave you the trots...not. Tinned tomatoes and pasta – seemingly everyone was making spag bol. And, naturally, anything slash everything required for bread making. A veritable stampede to denude the shelves of yeast and strong wheat flour. Because give the Brits a crisis - snow, storm or global pandemic – and they bake bread. Therapeutic. But no shortages of shampoo. She’d been able to get her hands on all types of shampoo. The wrong types of shampoo, it transpired. Because the wrong types can coat your hair in a way that stops both bleach and colour having any effect. Who knew? It was a shame that the wrong type of shampoo didn’t stop the grey from growing out of your scalp too – but sadly not. Rinsed off, she was given ‘special’ shampoo to take home, told to use it and come back the next day. She thought vaguely of the children, not sure why. Still scratching, she arrived home and ducked under the washing line with its pegged array of masks, washed and dancing in the breeze. “That was quick. Hair looks lovely.” Himself looked up from his paper as she opened the back door. Should she tell him? Or wait until she’d actually had her hair done and see if he noticed? She plumped for the latter. He went on “now you’re back, could you give me a trim please darling?” So she did. Had been doing so regularly since lockdown. With multi-purpose kitchen scissors and dog clippers bought for 50p at a car boot. All that clipping and snipping, much like the kneading and baking, was very therapeutic and she wondered whether she’d missed her vocation as a barber. Short back and sides, Sir? Mmnn possibly. Definitely not a vocational baker, though – her bread had an unusual masonry-like quality not often found in a foodstuff. And maybe not suited to be a proper hairdresser either, if she were honest. It was the clients. With their photos of celebrity hair-dos, their nebulous demands and their wrong types of shampoos, she wasn’t sure she could cope with the clients…

COMMUNITY / MOTORING Online Art Exhibition to Raise Funds for Mental Health Charity. The Big Pause is an online exhibition of artworks created during or inspired by lockdown. Exhibited works have been selected from entries to an Open Art Competition organised by Artful Collective and features a range of both 2D and 3D artwork. The exhibition will be held online between 30th Sept - 19th Oct at www.artfulcollective. co.uk. Many of the artworks will be for sale, with 25% of all proceeds going to Hope In Depression, a UK based charity which provides support and advice for people suffering with anxiety and depression and their carers. www.hopeindepression.org For many people, creativity was an important way to express their experiences and feelings through lockdown, with many people giving art a go for the first time or revisiting a lost hobby. Many experienced the benefits of creativity as a tool for wellbeing and mindfulness. The aim of this competition and exhibition is to bring together a collection of works that reflect people’s personal experiences of this time. The competition was judged by a panel, with 3 cash prizes donated by Test Valley Arts Foundation. www.testvalleyarts.org. The judges selected Chrissie Collins ‘Troy’ as the overall winner (£200) with Andrea Kirby’s ‘Isolation’ and Katie Cambridge’s ‘Daily Exercise’ both awarded runners up prizes (£50) A further 26 works were selected for inclusion in the exhibition.

Salisbury Cathedral School Welcomes New ‘Bright Explorers’
a home-made ‘tippy-tap’ which provided enjoyment as well as necessary handwashing. “Our new forest school group for pre-school children, Bright Explorers, is a natural extension of our focus on outdoor learning,” explains Jojo Orange, marketing officer at Salisbury Cathedral School. “The pre-prep has two outdoor classrooms, as well as an outdoor performance space and children’s garden, and we have recruited an outdoor learning specialist to help us keep expanding this area of the curriculum.”
Intrepid toddlers and pre-schoolers, aged between 2 and 4 years, took temporary residence under a large tree in the beautiful grounds of Salisbury Cathedral School on Friday 11 September for the first meeting of the new Bright Explorers forest school group. The Bright Explorers will meet every Friday this term, led by Sarah Tribe of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, to get muddy and have fun learning about nature. Every child was welcomed with their own ‘Forest School Ticket’ – a sticky card to collect natural treasures such as leaves, grass, twigs and berries. Other activities included, making homes for a collection of woodland themed soft toys, a mud making kitchen, a swing and

Each week the Bright Explorers will congregate in a different spot within the 27 acres of beautiful grounds that is home to Salisbury Cathedral School. Activities are provided for the children, but free play is the name of the game and we suggest parents let their little ones explore as they wish during their time with us each week. The purpose of the group is to encourage both the children and the parents to have increased confidence to go outside and explore. Embley Sixth Form Grows From Strength To Strength
Sixth Form at the helm and many unique enrichment activities ahead of them, there is much to look forward to. They will be following the success of the school’s recent Year 13 leavers who, with the direction and individual support from teachers, achieved a year-on-year improvement across the school’s A Level grades with 56% achieving A*-A, 92% securing A*-B and 98% attaining A*-C at A Level. Embley’s value-added was +0.9% for A Level which means that children who went to the school achieved almost a grade above that which they would have been expected to achieve elsewhere. Most of the students are going on to their first choice university, with destinations including Queen Mary University of London, Royal Holloway, and universities of Warwick, Cardiff, Southampton and Exeter alongside international destinations.

Rebecca strongly believes in the value of coaching and mentoring, and that Sixth Form pupils need to be afforded greater freedom but they need support, time and guidance to make big decisions about their futures. Every A Level student benefits from an individual programme of teaching, learning and pastoral support. In addition there is a range of unique opportunities including an MBA Experience in partnership with Winchester University, a series of enrichment lectures with Exeter University and evening Nightingale Lectures which see explorers, astronauts, leading sports personalities and Formula 1 designers and engineers speak to students during formal, black tie dining experiences. EDUCATION On Friday, the annual Pinny Service welcomed new pupils. Led by the wonderful Godolphin Chaplain, Revd. Dr. Stella Wood, pupils and their pinnys were blessed as they were welcomed into the Godolphin Prep community.
How to help your child achieve high performance By Jane Gandee, headmistress of St. Swithun’s Winchester We used to think that we are all born with a certain, fixed level of intelligence; that some people will achieve top grades at school and perform excellently in life whilst others will never achieve much. Today we know that the inherent lifelong plasticity of the brain means that we all have the potential to become cleverer and to perform at a high level given enough time and the right circumstances. While some children naturally acquire the thinking skills, values, attitudes and attributes needed for a lifetime of success, many don’t. They need to be taught explicitly how to recognise, practise and embed these factors, and this happens most effectively in a partnership between parents and school. Two years ago St Swithun’s joined the High Performance Learning (HPL) international family of schools which was founded by Professor Deborah Eyre. Through her work with gifted individuals, she identified the thinking skills and values that high performers have in common. There is much overlap with the attributes which the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) lists as the most important for today’s children to acquire for the future: solving complex problems; critical, creative and flexible thinking; managing, co-operating

A Pinny Service to celebrate the start of term at Godolphin Prep
This Autumn Term will bring celebrations of the Harvest and School Nativity, both much anticipated events by all. This year the events will be broadcast virtually, but no doubt still be surrounded by enthusiasm and community spirit. There is a definite buzz at the Prep as pupils and staff are excited and eager to be back together and ready to explore the year ahead.
On Tuesday 8 September, Godolphin Prep enjoyed a safe return welcoming their pupils back to School. Whilst this year will be slightly different, with pupils staying in class ‘bubbles’, Head Julia Miller commented ‘it is nice to see the Prep busy and full of life again after such a long time away’.

and negotiating with people; demonstrating emotional intelligence; being serviceorientated and being confident in judgement and decision-making. Through the HPL initiative, children as young as three years old at St Swithun’s begin to recognise and explore these concepts in an age-appropriate way and to apply them across all areas of the curriculum throughout their school career. So what can parents do to encourage their children to develop the necessary values, attitudes and attributes? Well, research shows that a parent’s educational experience, beliefs and values affect their child’s own selfconcept, interest in school and achievement. A parent who tells their child that they themselves were hopeless at languages, for example, gives the impression that languages are unimportant or impossibly difficult. Their child internalises this, assumes that they will struggle so there is no point in studying which leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Similarly, if a parent gives up tasks halfway through because they can’t do them, their children learns not to persist in the face of difficulty.
by example, believe that with effort their child is capable of high performance in multiple areas, and have conversations that reinforce the importance of a good work ethic, continuous improvement and trying your best.
The most important things that parents can do to help their child succeed are lead

Why does academic achievement matter? Because children who do well at school and then at university are, statistically speaking, more likely to have greater wealth, better health and happiness, and to make a greater contribution to society. Research shows that exceptional intelligence is not a particularly good indicator of exceptional performance in life. But the right values and attitudes are. It is therefore crucial that parents and the school work together. St Swithun’s is an independent school for girls in Winchester, educating day students aged from 3 to 18 and with boarding for girls from age 11. Jane Gandee is head of the senior school.
