HEALTH &
WELLBEING The 10 minute kitchen workout I created this workout to help patients fit in their strength training around their busy lives, and the feedback has been great. Working from home is here to stay for a bit longer, and for many it may become an established way of working. I know how hard it can be to motivate yourself to move when you are at home, with no allocated time slot, no personal trainer and no idea where to start. So, here is the solution. You have 10 minutes, right? I have come up with a simple movement routine that you can do in your kitchen, takes only 10 minutes, no gym kit or change of clothes needed, and you can modify to your own fitness levels. You can even do it between work emails, taking calls, running the bath or whilst watching a film. Osteopathic care is focused on creating an environment that supports total health for our patients, and our approach reaches far beyond fixing a bad back. “The benefits of regularly using weights and raising your heart rate are significant and must become a regular practice, especially as we get older”. The benefits include: • Reducing pain levels • Improved mobility and strength, and less chance of injury • Slowing the aging process at a cellular level • Increasing the growth of brain cells • Prevention of Diabetes Type 2 • Losing the dangerous, internal visceral fat • Increasing mitochondria which improves your metabolism and energy • Reduces inflammation • Improves respiration, circulation and heart health Life is now full of conveniences; from the chair we sit in and the car we drive, to online shopping and ready meals. We barely need to even move our arm to brush our teeth. It’s all designed to make life easier, to prop us up, make us more comfortable, provide us with time saving hacks and make us more efficient. Efficient at working at speed and from the luxury of a fully adjustable ‘orthopaedic’ chair, yes, but at what cost to our health? All these conveniences are turning our bodies to mush. A chair is simply an orthotic, a brace or support to hold our ever-weakening bodies upright in the ‘perfect posture’. The risks of a sedentary lifestyle are so well documented now. This movement-medicine will wake up your sleepy backside, open your creaky hips, stretch out your exhausted shoulders and lift your ten ton head. All you need to do is pop on your trainers, or better still do it in bare feet.
4
You can even adapt it for the office, just use your chair for balance and a box of files to deadlift. There really is no excuse! The 10 minute kitchen workout is available to download as an exercise sheet or watch as a video on our website. Or you can email us for a copy. Make yourself accountable to a partner, friend, or me! Take a picture, tag us and post it to Instagram @stockbridgeosteopathy or Facebook @stockbridgeosteopathicpractice. I’d love to see how you are getting on! Have fun, enjoy the process of creating good movement habits, and feeling the health benefits along the way. Emma Wightman - www.the-sop.com E-mail: emma@the-sop.com
Keeping well this winter As the colder weather starts to set in, there are lots of things you can do to keep healthy and well this winter.
Keeping your body healthy in winter As people age their immune system becomes weaker and we can lose muscle mass and so here are some tips to help boost our immune systems and stay healthy • Keep Active – try to move around once an hour, even if it’s only for a short walk to and from the kitchen to put the kettle on • Eat well and regularly – make sure you have plenty of food at home or have arranged meal deliveries • Keep hydrated – there is still the risk of dehydration even in the colder months • Get your free flu jab • Keep warm – layering is the best way to keep warm and set your heating timer to ensure your home is warm when it is coldest Keeping your mind healthy and your spirits up in winter Winter can be a difficult time but there are lots of ways to keep our minds active and our spirits up • Keep to a routine – Routine is a great way to give us some certainty in uncertain times and helps us plan for the week ahead • Keep connected – Keep up the connection with family and friends. Arrange regular visits (if possible due to Covid-19 restrictions) or arrange regular phone and video calls. Age Concern Hampshire can also help to put you in touch with a befriender. • Stay active – exercise is well known to give our mental health a boost and so a small amount of exercise is good for our bodies and our minds. This may be a short walk around the garden or even some armchair exercises. • Get Help – if you are finding things particularly tough, are feeling lonely or isolated or need help, reach out to family, friends or your GP for support. • Do something you enjoy – find time for hobbies you enjoy or perhaps try a new hobby. • There are lots of resources available to keep our minds active, from crosswords, quizzes and games to online exhibitions and events. Try something new! Alternatively, contact your local Village Agent, Denise on: 07969 376023. Village Agents are volunteers who can help you find information and local services that will enable you to stay living safely and independently.

WELLBEING
Fully participate & enjoy all the festive season has to offer this year What would YOU miss most during the Holiday Season if a Hearing Loss Developed? A Survey by Action on Hearing Loss identified some unsurprising but impactful results. People imagined missing out on a number of key elements of the festive season that other take for granted such as; • The sound of Christmas Carols • The Classic Christmas Songs on the radio • The Soundtrack to much loved festive Films But what they thought they would miss the most was not being able to fully participate in conversations with family and friends As Christmas is the season of goodwill and merriment, all should be allowed to partake equally in the festive fun so Sam Longman resident Audiologist at the Alresford Hearing Studio has compiled these top tips for those with hearing loss, to help make the most of the time spent with loved ones this festive season Some Top Tips for the Party Season • Check that your hearing equipment is still right for you. Visit a skilled and experienced audiologist before the festive season for a free, comprehensive consultation .They can optimize your current hearing aids to suit noisy environments such as parties or restaurants and can recommend the equipment that handle these environments best. • Check whether your hearing aids have directional microphones (two microphones instead of one), that are designed to reduce sounds from the side and the rear and focus on sounds in front of you. They will focus your hearing aids wherever your nose is pointing. So if you are facing into a noisy restaurant, the directional microphones will be focusing on the greatest amount of background noise. That is not good, when your hearing aids have directional microphones, the best spot to sit in is the one that will put room noise behind you. If you don’t have directional microphones, it may be time to consider an upgrade • Once you are confident in your equipment make sure you use it often, this allows your brain to adjust to different sounds over time o Using it only when you are faced with noisy situations tends to overwhelm the brain so you need to ‘train’ it to deal
6
with these situations. As you use them more your brain will start to distinguish between important and non-important sounds and adapts to the environment and makes it easier for you to follow the conversation. So start wearing your hearing aids every day in the weeks leading up to the Big Day!
When Out Socialising o If you have a choice between a long table or a booth, choose a booth this will allow you to be closer to the speaker at all times o Don’t sit near the kitchen, at the bar or near the entrance to the restaurant. The ambient noise from these locations may be distracting o If you are dining with a larger group, avoid sitting at the ends of the table. It is very difficult to hear from one end to the other so try to sit in the middle. Be realistic even people without hearing loss may struggle at this time of year o Look above you - are you sitting directly under the air conditioning, fan or music speaker? sometimes the restaurant will agree to turn down the volume of the music if you explain that it is too loud for you to communicate with your dinner guests o Look at the person who is talking. When you are in a challenging environment such as a restaurant, you are going to need to use some visual cues o Enjoy yourself but don’t drink too much - drinking alcohol increases blood flow to the inner ear, which can cause tinnitus – a ringing, buzzing or swooshing sound in the ears. This condition should resolve itself in a few hours, but can still really compromise enjoyment •
The Alresford Hearing Studio can also service and fine tune all makes and models of hearing equipment. They are able to provide the optimum solution for you to enjoy the festive season. They can also check for wax build up in the Ear Canal and if necessary remove it using state of the art micro suction techniques.

outreach service and £45k funding for the supported housing provision at Bridge House in Andover, both run by Two Saints. At a cabinet meeting on 4 November, council chiefs unanimously backed providing funding for the next financial year. Portfolio holder for housing and environmental health, councillor Phil Bundy, said: “We know all too well how valuable these services are to those who need them. And in the midst of a global pandemic it is more important than ever before that we support those at risk.
Homelessness services in Test Valley are set to receive a £55k boost in 2021 thanks to Test Valley Borough Council. The money comes from the authority’s Flexible Homelessness Support Grant provided by central government, and includes £10k towards maintaining a local
TV Capsule - A film for you, made by you.
The Essentials • We want people to produce a 2-3 minute film about their life in Test Valley • Films will be used to create a ‘Video Tapestry’ - a time capsule of today. • Anyone can take part, no special equipment is needed. Help is available. • The closing date for film submissions is December 31st 2020. Visit https://www.tvcapsule.co.uk for full details. Why now? In 1983, the people of Test Valley made a time capsule tapestry with thread, capturing a moment in the borough’s history for future generations. Now, nearly 40 years later in 2020, we’re doing it again, but this time, instead of thread, we’re using video to create a ‘digital’ tapestry. It’s a similar idea - to

“These services can transform people’s lives and help to get them off the street. It’s so easy to take for granted having a roof over your head but the consequences of losing your home can have a catastrophic impact on people’s mental and physical health. These are some of the most vulnerable individuals in our society and we will
weave together what makes us who we are the things we care about, the people we care about and why 2020 has been such a memorable year. And it has been quite a year. How will we look back at our lives in Test Valley 2020? What will we remember and what was most significant. How to get involved. It’s up to you to make the films - but we’re here to help, with “how to” videos and regular support surgeries to help you get your films made. You could make a film about almost anything that has meaning for you, (see the four rules) or gets you excited. The digital tapestry is about 2020, about the here and now.
So, what’s on your mind? Is there something that is keeping you up at night or something that gets you out of bed in the morning? Who or what matters to you? And where are the places that offer you inspiration or comfort? We want as many people from as many different backgrounds as possible to be part
continue to do everything in our power to support them.” In recent years, TVBC has invested tens of thousands of pounds in local homelessness services and has outlined its commitment to ensuring that no one who lives in the borough who faces sleeping rough will leave the council offices without first receiving an offer of emergency accommodation. The council has also changed the way it works with people to prevent and relieve homelessness by focusing on their strengths and aspirations and working across partnerships to try to address the underlying issues that have led to the person losing their home. Anyone concerned about their housing situation can contact the council’s housing service on 01264 368000 or 01794 527700. People can also report rough sleeping to the council through streetlink.org.uk
of this project, so the more people that get involved the better. So spread the word and get others involved too No video camera? No worries Using a smartphone is fine. There are some ‘how to’ videos on our website to help you make the most of whatever video camera you have; phone, tablet, DSLR or video camera - as the saying goes “the best camera is the one you have with you.” Keep it simple and have fun It doesn’t have to be a Hollywood production (although it could be!) Keep it simple and have fun. There are only four things to remember, (without which we will not be able to include your film). 1. Your film must be no longer than 3 minutes 2. Submission must be via the web form 3. We need to know you have the permission of everyone in the film - again, see the form 4. The film must be suitable for people of all ages. Visit https://www.tvcapsule.co.uk for details, inspiration or to upload your film. Sponsored by:

will be in place to allow unhurried shopping and access to the regular courtyard shops. ‘We were already planning to do something special this year,’ says the Mill’s owner Deborah Fox, ‘and once the city market was cancelled we accelerated our plans with the encouragement of our customers. Buying online may have its benefits but nothing beats the Christmas cheer that an outdoor shopping market can offer and we are fortunate enough to have fantastic contacts with local artists and craftsmen.’ Among the diverse range of participants will be Silky Saluki Designs by local artist Amelia Burgess and named after her Saluki dog. She creates unique, hand drawn, watercolour and ink designs for a range of cards, tea towels and aprons that will make the perfect present.
With the popular Christmas markets cancelled in both Winchester and Salisbury many shoppers will be looking for an alternative festive experience and chance to buy something original. Fisherton Mill in Salisbury’s city-centre hopes to fill the gap with a Maker’s Market featuring over 30 small craft business for six December shopping days. Each day a small but carefully curated outdoor Makers Market will feature seven vendors under a covered decorated pergola in the courtyard of the iconic Victorian grain mill. Safety protocols

COMMUNITY Enough brownfield land for 27,900 new homes in Hampshire, CPRE report reveals There is enough brownfield land for almost 27,900 new homes in Hampshire and over a third of sites already have planning permission, a new report form CPRE, the countryside charity, has revealed. Nationally, there is capacity for 1.3 million new homes on brownfield land and over half a million already have planning permission. The figures for Hampshire and across the country demonstrate that there is already enough available and suitable land in the planning system to meet the government’s ambition to build 300,000 homes a year for the next 5 years (this Parliament), calling into question the controversial plans to deregulate the planning system that has been proposed by Ministers. CPRE Hampshire has highlighted that the method of calculating housing numbers is the single biggest issue facing Hampshire in the government’s recent Changes to the Current Planning System consultation. The government proposes to allocate 9,275 new homes a year to Hampshire (46,375 over 5 years), although the Office for National Statistics projects only 4,097 new households will be formed (20,485 over 5 years). Brownfield land – land that has previously been built on, and now sits derelict or vacant – provides a valuable resource in the protection of our green spaces and countryside from development. The State of Brownfield report 2020 is the latest in a series of yearly CPRE reports on the Brownfield Register, which catalogue the number of brownfield sites available for development. Brownfield Registers were first introduced in April 2017 following CPRE’s Waste of Space campaign.
Christmas is a’coming and Broughton Community Shop is here to help you The Post Office Counter in the Shop is open every weekday 9am – 1.00pm and Saturday 9.00am -12.00noon so that you can buy Christmas stamps, post your cards and parcels off in good time, withdraw cash, sort your banking and all those other ‘mustdo’ jobs in a calm and efficient environment – with easy parking. The Shop is very proud of its partnerships with so many local suppliers and they are here for you this Christmas too. All cuts and types of free-range meat plus all the trimmings from our local meat suppliers – Brazen Butchers, Greenfield Pork and Hogget & Boar - can be ordered for collection from the Shop on 23rd December – but hurry, last day for ordering is 4th December! You can also order Chalkstream trout – fresh and smoked – as well as fabulous fresh fruit and vegetables.
In Hampshire, more than 470 brownfield sites have been identified, with the largest number of sites in Portsmouth (65), Hart (63) and Basingstoke and Deane (57). Portsmouth also has the largest sites by size (119 hectares), closely followed by Gosport (115.5 hectares) and Havant (111 hectares). The greatest number of homes that could be provided by sites are in Portsmouth (5,522 homes), Southampton (3,779) and Hart (3,328). The analysis clearly demonstrates that the planning system is not slowing building rates. There is currently planning permission for over half a million (565,564) units on brownfield land, of which almost 11,800 units are in Hampshire. In February 2020, the Local Government Association found that over one million homes in total had been granted planning permission but not yet built. This means that brownfield sites and other unbuilt sites with planning permission could provide over 1.5 million new homes – clearly demonstrating there is already enough suitable land in the planning system to meet the government’s 300,000 annual target for the rest of this Parliament. In order to make best use of suitable brownfield land, CPRE is urging the government to introduce a genuine ‘brownfield first’ policy, which ensures that suitable previously developed or under-used land is prioritised for redevelopment over green spaces and countryside. CPRE Hampshire’s responses to the government’s plans to change and deregulate the planning system are available from www.cprehampshire.org.uk.

MOTORING
The Forum talks to local entrepreneur Niall Holden, owner and founder of Winchester Auto Barn about the trials and tribulations of operating during a global pandemic.
2
020 has been a rollercoaster ride for owner and founder of Winchester Auto Barn & Driver’s Club, Niall Holden. Classic car enthusiast Niall, bought the former Hill Farm Garage near Stockbridge back in September 2018 with ambitious plans to expand and develop the site into an interesting destination. Planning permission was obtained to enlarge the garage through the addition of a new showroom and a refreshment and customer waiting area. It is hoped works will commence on the premises next spring. Niall was keen to build on Hill Farm’s reputation (now Winchester Auto Barn) as a highly respected and trusted garage specialising in Mercedes Benz, offering MOTs, Services and Repairs for all makes and models. The Showroom is a stylish mix of cars, curios and automobilia from the 60’s,
20
70’s & 80’s. “We aim to sell only honest well sorted vehicles that have been thoroughly inspected by our highly experienced in-house specialists,” says Niall. “Our cars are either sourced by ourselves or we are selling on a commission basis on behalf of our customers. We can source specific vehicles and will soon be offering a finance facility to enable customers to acquire their next toy.” Alongside day to day operations, Niall’s vision was to establish the Winchester Auto Barn as a hub and destination for like minded motoring enthusiasts. The Breakfast Club meetings started in October 2018 and became an instant hit, regularaly attracting 8 to 12 hundred motoring enthusiasts from across the region enjoying a coffee and a butty from our converted Citroen H-Van Jacques Custard. Auto Fest, the garages charity motoring and music festival, raising funds for Naomi House & Jacks Place, was first held in July 2019 and very succesful and was scheduled to happen again in July. Obviously the country went into Lockdown so this is on hold until we can do it again. “We were finally beginning to break even after our first year’s trading and we had just launched our new website and were literally a couple of days away from holding our first Breakfast Club gathering in March when we went into Lockdown,” explains Niall. “we were very disappointed to say the least! Closing the garage was a tough decision having spent eighteen months building up the business and refining the brand but the safety
of the team and customers were of paramount importance to me. The events we hold are a fantastic way of connecting with our local community and we really miss that.” Niall kept himself busy during lockdown and with the help of his teenage children they re-painted the workshop. He also invested in three new service bays and updated the equipment in the workshop so that when the time came he would be able to increase capacity. Ever the entrepreneur Niall and his team have been busy adapting to the current situation. “With large scale events still off the cards, we are trialling a virtual format for Breakfast Club. It’s not the same but better than nothing! Owners send us videos of their classic cars and we produce a montage of intersting vehicles to be enjoyed from the safety of your laptop via our website” explains Niall. He has recently taken on two mechanic apprentices from Sparsholt College to work alongside his highly experienced senior technicians. “Bringing in the right people at the right time is crucial to the growth of a small business like the Auto Barn,” explains Niall. We are lucky really as pandemic or not people still need their cars looking after. As soon as we can we will get the Breakfast Clubs up and running again so please keep checking our website for any news of hopefully upcoming events. www.winchesterautobarn.com

COMMUNITY / PROFESSIONAL / EDUCATION Andover BID Rangers offer an essential service to businesses during lockdown During this second lockdown period, Andover BID Rangers continue to maintain a daily presence in Andover Town Centre to provide an essential service to BID businesses. The BID Rangers continue to work throughout this lockdown period helping to keep Andover Town Centre safe. As well as their normal duties, the rangers are also able to: • Carry out routine checks on all vacant business premises. • Contact the business directly to inform them of matters such as property damage, a flood, or an alarm sounding. • Assist essential stores with crowd control, shoplifting and reassurance. • Offer public reassurance for shoppers who still must come into town Steve Godwin BID manager says: “This second lockdown period is a little different to the one over the summer. More essential businesses have been able to stay open and those who are closed are often operating a click and collect or take away service. We have noticed an increase in the number of people coming into town who think that shoplifting is acceptable, and that Andover is easy pickings. That is definitely not the case and the BID Rangers are working closely with the open businesses, the police

and other agencies to combat theft and to be a reassuring presence in the town. In addition due to business demand, we decided at the beginning of this situation to extend the BID service to include property checks and inspections and this has also been incredibly well received by businesses, both those open and those who are closed’’ The message to anyone that intends shoplifting in Andover is that you are being watched and will be caught. “I love reading!” I love books! Standing by a little table of books in a book shop is one of my favourite pastimes; narrowing choices down by reading multiple blurbs and then venturing into the first page to see which book grabs my attention. Bliss! At the moment book browsing is online, but it has made me think about where that love of reading comes from. Books can be a great source of joy and even take the reader to a curious new world. However, the process of actually learning to read is both carefully planned and systematic; systematic phonics is an approach in itself which is taught in the Early Years. Both observing and teaching daily phonics lessons can be such a joy. The journey a child goes on to learn to read is incredibly exciting for the child, parent and teacher. It really is a team effort. Here are some top tips for supporting your child with phonics: • remember that all children learn at different rates so don’t worry! When learning letter sounds with your child help to support and build knowledge at a rate that works for your child and with guidance from school • make sure the phonic sounds you are making match those being taught e.g: a short clipped ‘b’ sound rather than a ‘bu’ • it is about modelling too - make sure all members of the household model themselves as readers - from reading the newspaper to talking about signs when you’re out for a walk • keep the joy alive by reading to your child regularly and enjoying books together.

EDUCATION Experiencing the Past at Stroud School Stroud School, Romsey, likes to bring history to life and for its pupils to learn creatively through imagination and technology. Year 1 children enjoyed a Florence Nightingale Day as part of their history topic this half term. The children learnt about her life and work; they made lanterns and investigated artefacts from her lifetime. At the end the day, their classroom was turned into an old, dirty hospital and the young 'nurses' transformed the hospital into a clean hospital, whilst feeding the injured soldiers, reading to them by lamp light and writing letters using a quill and ink. “It’s about bringing it all to life”, say Head of KS1, Mrs Walton. “They learn more from experiencing and being active and our Florence Nightingale Day is always a fun and educational event.” Additionally, as part of year’s 5’s topic on The Aztecs, the children have bene learning all about the ancient civilization. The children have been creating their own Aztec
Making Sport Count During Lockdown
As we returned to school in September, the nation’s schools were cautiously optimistic that those all-important fixtures against other schools could be resumed at some point, but the second lockdown forced everyone to accept that all inter-school sport was off until at least the New Year. This has been hard on all schools, but the staff and children have risen to the challenge. Although disappointed, the sports staff at Farleigh School have made this an opportunity to give the children a chance to try completely new sports and develop their
28
masks and learning about the ancient way of life. They also managed to physically explore the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan with the help of a little 21st century technology! The school is incredibly lucky to have some Virtual Reality headsets where the pupils can really walk amongst the ancient civilisation and experience what life would have been like. Using these VR headset
really made their learning come to life. The Year 5 children also used Google Slides to create collaborative slideshow about facets of Aztec life and additionally used their iPads to write their own versions of the myth of the finding of Tenochtitlan. For more information about learning at Stroud or to book an individual socially distancing tour, contact registrar@stroudkes.org.uk or call 01794 528360.
intra-school sport in a way that would not have been possible during normal times. So, in addition to hockey and netball, the girls are playing lacrosse once a week. It is a fun game and the girls have been learning how to cradle the ball, cut for the ball and scoop the ball off the ground. As a result of their practise, throwing and catching have improved enormously and lacrosse has proved a very popular addition to the sports programme. The boys are learning all the skills of hockey and, like the girls, are enjoying having the opportunity to be introduced to a different sport. At the end of term, we hope Years 6, 7 and 8 boys and girls will challenge each other in hockey matches. We can tell already that it is going to be highly competitive! On Saturdays, Farleigh has brought increased variety to its House Competition, with both boys and girls relishing the chance to play competitive netball, touch rugby,
lacrosse, dodgeball and handball, and to take part in swimming galas. Despite the challenges of planning for a further term in which we have all had to be mindful of changing guidance, both the staff and children have engaged superbly and it has been fantastic to see our wonderful grounds and facilities being used to the full during the games afternoons. Nevertheless, we hope that in the not-too-distant future, we will be welcoming visiting schools and parents back to the Farleigh sports fields and our famous match teas! Monday 14th December Romsey Community Cinema - Last Christmas, from 3.30pm to 7pm. Kate (Emilia Clarke) harumphs around London, a bundle of bad decisions accompanied by the jangle of bells on her shoes, another irritating consequence from her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. Tom (Henry Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two. But sometimes, you gotta let the snow fall where it may, you gotta listen to your heart … and you gotta have faith. Romsey Town Hall, 1 Market Place, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 8YZ. Tickets £6.50. Godolphin’s School Chaplain Reverend Dr Stella Wood said “While we had to do things differently this year, carefully distanced in bubbles stretched across Pitch One, the centre point of the lacrosse pitch and its cross forming the perfect place to set the Cross of remembrance, we felt privileged to be able to gather as a whole school, when so many Remembrance services across the country were curtailed. The bugler's call sang out from the balcony high on the Ash building, buffeted and carried with the wind in a wistful call to us and to all humanity to build a world of peace. The final prayer seemed particularly appropriate for this year: Merciful God, we offer to you the fears in us that have not yet been cast out by love: May we accept the hope you have placed in the hearts of all people, and live lives of justice, courage and mercy.” For more information, contact Godolphin on events@godolphin.org or telephone 01722 430571.
