urprised to find herself flat on her back, she looked sideways. Inches from her face, her terrier was sporting a similarly stunned expression in her fur trimmed, smoky eyes.

The weeny Houdini once even disappeared from the rigorously ‘dog proofed’ garden for a whole day, returning triumphant and unrepentant with a cargo of a thousand ticks. Her mistress picked up her wriggling furry body and kissed her; so relieved she was back, and the dog so pleased to be back, that noone could be cross.

They’d been walking parallel to the river. Marshy, thickly populated with brambles and rotting fallen trees covered in moss. Scrambling over slippery logs and side-stepping thorny trip wires required stamina, agility and close quarter concentration. So when the deer rose out of the ground where it had lain hidden and camouflaged in the brown, decaying detritus, she’d been unprepared. In its flight it struck her full in the chest, leapt gracefully over her dog and fled the scene, leaving her prone. The terrier was in disbelief; the nerve of that funny looking dog with the pointy feet and sticks on its head! Years before, resting literally in the palm of her hand, she’d been the tiniest puppy when she was that best-of-all birthday present. Himself had bought a chicken coop and told her to look in the Land Rover for another gift. Expecting a chicken – well, you would, wouldn’t you – she was surprised to find a little scrap of excited, yapping fur. ‘Chicken’ didn’t quite cut it as a name, so they chose something fittingly cute and chirpy for the tiny creature. And she was extremely cute and terribly chirpy, but she was also a terrier… A Border-cross at that. With a bit of a volatile nature, she was often referred to as the ‘cross Border’. To be fair, her wayward traits presented themselves early on and they should have been prepared from the get go. Her very first walk was going so well. Proud owner, tiny puppy, lots of compliments and charm. Until tiny puppy scented something more interesting in the form of two large dogs on the other side of the park, that is. She homed in on them. My, she was fast – like a blunt and furry missile. Her proud owner, not so much. She scooped up the miscreant whilst panting and wheezing like an asthmatic accordion with the effort of running and yelling at the same time. The two large dogs and owner were, thankfully, amused at the tiny terrier who’d been telling them off and making a dreadful noise, something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And at a surprising volume for one so small.

Yes, she admitted it without a shred of shame - that dog had her wrapped around her little claw. She was putty in her paws. But the terrier would lie on her sick bed all day when her mistress was ill. A personal protection squad of one, snout towards the door she was ready to repel all hostiles. And when her mistress cradled her in her arms and kissed her soft ears, smelling faintly of elderflowers, the small dog would croon and half close her eyes with pleasure.

But the cross Border was also, it has to be said, ‘a bit of a worry’.

One sunny Saturday just before Christmas, the terrier was running through a narrow thicket as they walked alongside on the grassy riverbank. Himself, hearing the drone of an insect, commented that it was very late for wasps. When they reached the end of the wood they called their dog. And called. Eventually she tottered out of the trees, collapsing at their feet. Having presumably encountered the mother lode nest, the small, furry body was crawling with wasps. Himself scooped up her limp and comatose little body. A mercy dash to the nearest vet, adrenaline shots and an oxygen tent – and the terrier was saved! Relieved tears all round. Reluctantly they left the prone and semi-conscious dog with the vets, who said she needed to overnight with them. However, they hadn’t long been home when the ‘phone rang. “Hello?” In the background, she could hear the most awful noise. Hard to describe – something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And so loud. It sounded familiar… And cross. “Hello.” Said the slightly stressed sounding voice at the other end. “Please can you come and collect your dog. We think she’s well enough to go home…” But all things come to an end and eventually she lost her constant companion, her terrier. To use the word ‘lost’ is, of course, a flimsy euphemism - it makes it sound like she wandered off. Which actually was clearly a recurring theme throughout her 16 odd years. But all too soon, the wet-nosed, furry vandal broke her heart and was gone, sauntering off and wagging her tail behind her…

Tunworth Cheese twice baked souffle

It's so good to see a growing number of local food producers making names for themselves. Stacey Hedges at The Hampshire Cheese Company makes Winslade and Tunworth, two delicious artisanal cheeses which can now be bought at several branches of the Co-op around Hampshire as well as Waitrose and independent delis and grocery stores. And further afield as far away as Singapore! Her present creamery will soon be replaced with a new and bigger one to meet the growing demand. Try my amazing double baked souffle recipe using Tunworth. It is easier than you might think and can be made a day or two ahead, ready to finish off in a hot oven, brown and bubbling, and it will be a showstopper I promise! My recipe serves 6 starter size.

Ingredients for Souffle

Butter the ramekins and sprinkle the inside with grated parmesan Fill a baking dish with hot water in the oven at 180 degrees. This is known as a Bain Marie which will help even cooking. Melt the butter gently and stir in the cornflour to form a roux. Gradually add the the milk and cream mixture until the sauce thickens slightly. Add the Tunworth to the mixture and stir over a gentle heat. The sauce should be smooth. Set aside to cool slightly. Separate the eggs and beat the egg yolks. Stir the yolks into the mixture. If it looks as though it is separating at this stage, don’t worry keep going! Whisk the egg whites to soft peaks and fold into the mixture. Season to taste. Gently fill the ramekins to the top and bake for twenty minutes until brown and risen. Allow to cool and turn onto a try. The souffles at this stage can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days or frozen.

120ml full-fat milk 120 ml double cream 60gm cornflour 45 gm butter 4 eggs whole 200gm Tunworth cheese (remove the rind before weighing) cut into small pieces Salt and pepper to taste Butter to grease ramekins

Method for the first bake

Turn each souffle upside down into an ovenproof dish with the brown top at the bottom. Pour enough double cream to come about half way up the sides. Sprinkle grated parmesan onto the top and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 mins until the sauce bubbles and the souffle is nicely glazed. Serve with a green salad and crusty bread.

Everyone’s welcome to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Andover Town Centre on Friday 3rd June, 11am-5pm. Andover has a long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees and significant moments in royal history. The people of Andover will once again come out to celebrate in the Market Square for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Street Festival, which is being held on Friday June 3rd 2022. This is a free event for all ages, featuring a rich medley of food & drink, live music and dance, and an interactive arts trail. The event aims to celebrate the rich diversity and talent of Andover and it’s residents in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. There will be performances from local professional and amateur groups and students from Andover College throughout the day. A Street Food market will include flavours from around the world, and African Drumming workshops will run throughout the day at Riverside Park. To help you make a day of it there will also be royal themed storytelling sessions, a Magician, Punch and Judy show, and art workshops at various locations including The Chantry Centre, Andover Library, Chapel Arts Studios and Andover Museum. The survey is available at www.testvalley.gov.uk/corporateplan2023 Over the summer, councillors and council officers will also be at various community events up and down the borough to speak to residents about what their priorities are. This first phase of the consultation will run until September, before the council brings these views together alongside other information in a second phase, engaging with community members to help shape the development of the priorities. The current Corporate Plan, Growing Our Potential, is set to come to an end in April 2023. Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, councillor Phil North, said: “The last four years have produced some considerable challenges, but we have been able to protect our frontline services, deliver improvements to our town centres and do some significant work preparing for a new enhanced recycling service. We want to build on those as we look forward to the next set of priorities in a changing environment. “So, whether it’s access to nature, the leisure facilities you use or how we help deliver affordable homes, what you think matters to us. “Therefore, I would strongly encourage residents to have their say whether that’s through our online survey or coming to say hello at one of the many events we will be attending this summer.”

good Festival 2022 Good Festival (formerly Hampshire Country & Garden Festival) is a fun-filled day for all of the family hosted by the Hampshire Medical Fund. Set amongst the beautiful gardens of Bere Mill on the River Test in Whitchurch, the festival returns this year on Sunday 26th June.

This year, the Hampshire Medical Fund has a very special fund-raising target of £200,000 for the procurement of a state of the art AI (artificial intelligence) machine for interventional radiology. This machine allows minimally invasive, image guided procedures to target tumours in the lungs, kidneys & liver. There are only two of these machines in the entire United Kingdom, which makes it cutting edge technology in cancer treatment for The Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The festival launches on Saturday 25th June with an evening of sparkling wine, cocktails and canapés set against the backdrop of Bere Mill gardens. This will be followed by supper, a silent auction and a fast auction finale, accompanied by musical duo, The Canapés, on the guitar and violin. On Sunday, the doors open at 9.30am. Five Godolphin teams complete Ten Tors Challenge 2022

Many congratulations to the Godolphin teams who successfully completed the Ten Tors Challenge 2022 on Dartmoor last month. This year, after two years away, Godolphin secured 5 teams on the start line

for the Challenge with 30 girls taking part . In the foggy gloom of Saturday morning, the teams set off on their adventures - 35 miles of self-sufficient travel across the wilds of Dartmoor. As the sun chased the fog away by 8.00am the temperatures rose and provided an additional challenge for the girls to consider. Back in the Okehampton campsite and across many Wiltshire and Hampshire homes the teams were tracked and followed as they made their way around their designated routes with nail baiting nervousness (some kitchens were even turned into Command Posts, with parents tracking every team). All teams progressed well through the day and remained on course in line with their route cards, making it to the night time camps in good order. Waking up at 4.30am on Sunday morning the teams were greeted with a thick fog

as they readied themselves for a 6.00am start. The fog remained in place for several hours and provided some tricky navigation conditions initially. Slowly, parents gathered at the finish line and welcomed the first tired team over the line at midday. The remaining teams marched in triumphantly over the next couple of hours with the final team arriving at 4.15pm to a huge cheer from all the parents and girls who had stayed on to see their teammates complete the Challenge. This year the most notable characteristic has been the togetherness and teamwork across the whole squad and there is no doubt that is the strength that got all of these girls to the end of the Challenge. By all means enjoy the excitement of this major milestone in your child’s life, but don’t worry about reading and writing before they even begin.

Life skills are another area where you can help your child be ready for school. The simplest things can make the biggest difference to their days away from you. Being able to put on and take off their coats and welly boots. Here at Salisbury Cathedral School we go outside to play and explore daily and we always dress for the weather which can mean sunscreen or gloves, sun caps or woolly hats, and we always wear boots. Being able to use the bathroom independently, wash their own hands and use a tissue are all good skills too as is being able to feed yourself. The really great news here is that all these activities help develop fine motor skills as well as increasing your child’s independence.

Starting school is a big deal. Even children who have been in nursery full time can find the jump challenging. It takes time, plenty of time, for our youngest pupils to settle in fully. We know that a child needs to feel safe, secure, happy and nurtured to create a good foundation for learning. That’s why we attribute the whole of the Autumn to establishing really strong relationships with each individual pupil, and their parents. It means that when we do venture into more academic learning the children are ready and excited, they can give their full attention because they are comfortable and confident at school.

A good tip is to let your child wear their school uniform during the summer before Reception. Regular use will not only help them feel more comfortable but also loosen button holes and ease zips. We don’t expect children to be able to read and write their names, but if they can recognise it that does help finding their coat amongst many which are the same. Name tags with pictures work well, children remember their animal or object easily while they learn to recognise the shape of their name too. Teach them to tidy up. At school we use lots of different toys and games and we always put them away again so we have space for fresh fun.

Unfortunately, in our busy and competitive world, giving children this time and space to grow before launching into letters and maths can feel as if you’re travelling against the tide. We all know a parent whose child can already write their name, or is a natural with numbers, and it’s all too easy to think we are letting our own child down by not keeping up. However, the reverse is often true. A child who has developed strong gross and fine motor skills will learn reading, writing and arithmetic more easily than one tasked with academic activities too early. It’s why the school curriculum for the early years’ foundation stage, EYFS, prioritises learning through play for the Reception year.

Whilst there is no pressure for your child to be able to read and write, we do strongly recommend sharing books as much as you can. Picture books and story books, any book really to demonstrate reading as a normal part of life. Nursery rhymes are particularly good. They are very powerful early influencers of language because of their repetitive patterns and wider vocabulary. The rhyming element is effective at progressing auditory discrimination skills which are vital for understanding phonics, which in turn, are critical for reading and writing development. Nursery rhymes are also packed with mathematical patterns too. Think ‘5 currant buns’ or ‘ten green bottles’ – it’s all good fun and good learning as well.

If you are keen to prepare your child for school, then building strong gross and fine motor skills is a brilliant place to start. Gross motor skills enable children to move their whole bodies, to run and jump and swing, but they also help children to sit still. We all need core strength to sit at a desk for a period of time and we need strong rotator cuffs to support controlled use of a pencil for writing. The great news here is that the best way to develop strong gross motor skills is through energetic play. Go to the park, encourage your child to run and climb, go swimming, ride bikes and scooters, visit a trampoline park, just be active in everyday life. Fine motor skills involve a refined use of muscles which control the hands, fingers and thumbs. Once again play is your friend to build these skills, but this time think quiet play. Building Lego, playing with marbles or construction toys and tackling puzzles are

all great options. If they like playing with playdough, even better. Squishing and shaping playdough is brilliant at developing strong hand muscles for using pens and pencils. Outside, encourage kids to pick up sticks and pine cones or help planting bulbs and flowers. And, if you begin to worry that other children are ahead academically, remind yourself of the old adage: you can’t run before you can walk. Children need well developed gross and fine motor skills to be able to sit and write. Of course, draw and colour as much as you like, just don’t succumb to unnecessary pressure for your child to keep up or stand out. Childhood should be fun.

Of course, your child might be the one who is desperate to learn and is pushing to be able to write their name. Don’t stop them, that’s not what this article is about. The message is that there is no rush for those children, which will be most children, who are not ready for the pen and the page just yet. Send them in for a warm Reception and let us, the teachers, do our job. Whilst we do not rush into the rigour of formal learning, you can rest assured your child will not be left behind. It’s not your fault that you don’t move enough Ooo, did you just raise an eyebrow? I hope you did. This statement might just cause a little stir, because the popular belief is that we can make choices about our behaviour, good or not so good, every second of every day; or can we? If we are not moving, exercising or changing our lifestyle as we ‘should’, does that mean we are lazy, unmotivated or uncaring? The short answer is, nope, or at least, not necessarily. The longer answer is that we are actually genetically programmed to behave as if we still live in a time of feast or famine. Therefore our ancient, instinctive brain is constantly still seeking food, rest, ease and convenience just in case there is a famine coming around the corner. The choice to take the stairs or the lift, the lift wins. The choice to change the channel with the remote or get up to press a button, the remote wins. The choice to eat the ice cream or an apple, the ice cream wins etc etc. So with this new understanding, we can be proactive, we must create an environment that encourages, even forces us to move more and create different shapes with our body. Make it so that choosing to move is the only option!

Environmental Citizen Science Project launches for second year

Target smashed for tree planting with almost 20,000 in the ground

Residents of Andover and the surrounding areas are being asked to contribute to the Nature in Harmony: Citizen Science project following a successful year of wildlife surveying in 2021. Developed by local environmental charity, Andover Trees United, the Nature In Harmony: Citizen Science project, which launches its second year of wildlife surveying on 1st May, will work with ordinary people, of all ages, to investigate the distribution of animal and plant species across Harmony Woods in Andover. Citizen science is a branch of scientific research conducted by non-scientists; by enrolling the help of volunteers into scientific research the capacity of the scientific community is improved and the public’s understanding of the science is increased. Nature In Harmony: Citizen Science has two goals: Firstly, to enhance current scientific understanding of the 44 acres of new woodland, located between Augusta Park and close to Enham Alamein. Secondly, to give individuals who take part the opportunity to take action in their own community and improve their understanding of ecology and conservation. The charity is looking for 12 members of the community for a minimum of 2 half-days each to act as recording assistants in our regular wildlife surveys. No experience is required as training will be given in field survey techniques and species identification by the project ecologist. All equipment needed for the survey will also be provided onsite. Surveys will be carried out primarily on weekday mornings, however, weekend sessions can be arranged for those who have other commitments during the week. Over the next year Andover Trees will also be running an exciting programme of events to complement the scientific research activity. Open to all, the events will include a Bioblitz on May 28th, 10x woodworking workshops throughout summer, and a concert on July 16th. Nearly 20,000 trees have been planted over the 2021/22 planting season, almost doubling the target set for Test Valley Borough Council. Last year, the council announced its target to plant 10,000 trees over the autumn and winter months in a bid to help tackle climate change and improve the environment. Now, climate change and countryside portfolio holder, councillor Alison Johnston, has revealed that a total of 19,325 trees have been planted across the borough. A total of 600 have been planted at Anton Lakes, almost 2,000 at Harewood Common and a further 1,200 at Hunts Farm, Timsbury. Through the Hampshire Dormice Project, 500 were also planted at Finkley Down Farm. The whips are mixed native species, with other planting locations including Ox Drove, Picket Twenty and Valley Park woodlands. The commitment to plant them came after the borough council declared a climate emergency in September 2019. Councillor Johnston, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that we have been able to smash the initial 10,000 figure that we set just over six months ago. The efforts that go into a project like this are huge, and we need the good will of volunteers and the dedication from landowners. “With the help of partners, we're absolutely committed to keeping this going and plan to plant a similar number of trees in each of the next three years.”

Stockbridge Open Gardens Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July Stockbridge once again opens its gardens to the public this July; on the 30th and 31st gardens at the western end of the village will be open to visitors and, with the River Test running through this part of Stockbridge, you will have the chance to walk along part of the river bank at The Greyhound on the Test and explore some of the other hidden waterways. After enjoying the gardens afternoon tea, Amesbury Town Band and a tempting plant stall will be awaiting you on the church lawn. Tickets are £10 (accompanied under 16s free) and can be bought from 1pm at St Peter’s Church or the car park at the western end of the village.

We’ve recently heard about something called ‘Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor’ and we’re wondering what it means and if it could be an option for us. Can you give me some information about how it works?” Of course! With the Bank of Mum and Dad remaining one of the UK’s largest lenders, and many first-time buyers still struggling to access the housing market, it’s unsurprising that many parents (and grandparents) are looking for ways in which to help their children or grandchildren fly the nest. The most obvious of those ways is, of course, gifting a deposit, but it’s not the only one. Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor is another avenue to explore – here’s some information that we hope you will find helpful. What is a Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor Mortgage? A Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor mortgage (sometimes known as a JBSP mortgage) allows two or more people to buy a property together, but with only one person taking ownership of that

property. This is the key difference from a joint mortgage, where all of the property purchasers are also the owners.
