Adult Peer Pressure
Is it just me or do we have more buzzing creatures in our lives than ever before? Busy bees and wasps awaken too early from their hibernating slumber and crossly moan like a teenager awoken from their pit. Flies breed in their multitudes and have no qualms about flashing their filthy landing gear all over the kitchen table and summer salads. Yes, even the friendly neighbourhood drone man whose grandchildren purchased him an expensive model has the audacity to buzz around you just as you’ve settled outside for a read in the sunshine.
But there is one distant humming that has the power to reduce grown adults to tears and have even the best of us cursing our lot in life - the persistent drone of next door’s lawn mower. Yes, the realities of dealing with adult peer pressure are very real indeed.
The morning had been spent in a manic melee, endless errands to run, knocks at the door, and each member of the family tripping over themselves to get everything sorted so that a lazy afternoon could be justifiably enjoyed.
Finally, noon made its presence known and, as if by magic, a peaceful slumber descended. Fresh coffee and the fancy mugs were scooped up from the French dresser, the naughty biscuits baked yesterday with thick chocolate chunks were placed lovingly on a floral plate Great-grandmother used to own. Sinking into a sun-baked garden chair, allowing the gentle lull of idle chit chat to swirl around you, yes life was good.
Until it all began. At first, the mere suggestion of the torture that was about to begin could easily be passed off. The gentle noise of small wheels grinding against paving slabs and eventually sinking into the lawn might just as well have been a child's bike or indeed a dutiful parent sorting out the recycling bin. I looked around at my family. Why shatter their peace? I might be mistaken. Please let me be mistaken.
And then the slithering sound of uncoiling wires. Maybe it was a hose pipe? Perhaps next door were breeding adders. But no, the unmistakable language the colour of blue that lightly floated over the hedge as the cord became tangled confirmed the wildest of nightmares. Next door was preparing to cut their grass. The cads!
I hastily offer another biscuit around, in the hope that sweetened circles of triple chocolate biscuits would provide enough of a distraction to put paid to any sudden movements in the form of getting up and unearthing our own rusty beast.
Whoosh! The drone of a lawnmower must be a peculiarly British sound that works as well as any alarm. The dregs of barista-inspired-on-a-specialdeal-at-the-supermarket coffee that had been settled quite comfortably at the bottom of father's cup suddenly found its life's destiny hastily rewritten as it flew through the air and landed on the grandmother's gifted rose bush. It might as well have been acid.
We all froze, rooted to the spot, keen not to make a sudden movement in case it transpires that this be assumed as a weakening, an acceptance of fate and a motion of suggestion. Nevertheless, despite our statuesque station, the committee was approached.
"Oughtn't we to cut the grass too?" And there we have it, adult peer pressure. Never mind smoking or drinking something you shouldn't, you know you have arrived as a fully-fledged, stressed-out adult when the mere whisper of next door's lawn mower has you rushing to your garage and ripping out your own machine from its happy slumber.
"No, it's fine, it can last a few more days at least." Sound casual - maybe that'll work.
"We can't, it's going to rain.”
“Great Aunt Ada is coming around tomorrow.” Now Great Aunt Ada could not see past the end of her nose, always complained about the cold and never stepped foot outside the door even in summer unless she was hugging a miniature log burner and likely couldn’t care less as to whether our back lawn was an inch or two over its allotted height. “Think of the bees!” My brother proclaimed; I’d never been so glad to have a sibling. It was a good argument, a great one in fact. A pause ensued, perhaps the battle had been won. False hope can be a cruel mistress.
“It’s no good, we’ve got to get it done.” Groans and more than a few curses ensued as the peace that had been long awaited was shattered. Our ancient lawnmower was taken from its dust cloth and dutifully dragged up and down in wonky lines. But at long last it was completed and done for another week, finally time to relax. Until the drone of the other next door begins…oh not, that’s not a hedge cutter is it?

Ben and the team were a dream to work with, from the start. Ben had great design ideas, which we incorporated, and which have turned out brilliantly. The quality of their workmanship is top class. We left them to fit the kitchen while we went away and they did a fantastic job. They even did unplanned kindnesses like changing a broken garage door lock free of charge. We keep finding little unexpected touches that delight us. We will use them again for other jobs in the house in the future. When you find people like this, you don’t want to let them go. If anyone reading this decides to use them, you will not be disappointed.

On the cusp of turning 40, relentlessly laced into corsets by her exasperated staff, the uptight world of the Austrian monarchy is the last thing Empress Sisi (Vicky Krieps) cares about. Decadence is far more exciting – so she heads off on a grand trip across Europe to call on old friends (and old flames). But the strings tying her to royal duty continue to tighten, and her attempts to make life more exciting turn into acts of rebellion. A vibrant, refreshingly mischievous take on the period drama with an award-winning lead in Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Corsage is the stunning, stylish new film from acclaimed director Marie Kreutzer.

Getting better and staying better – How To?
The aim of Osteopathy is to address the cause of a person’s pain, stimulate the natural healing response and treat the structure of the body to improve its function.
But once the healing process is well on its way, and you are feeling better, how can you maintain your new found wellbeing when life goes on - you have to continue at your desk, drive long distances or keep up your regular run or cycle?
To bounce or not to bounce?
In our 20’s we were still pretty infallible, bouncing nicely out of injury, in our 30’s perhaps it takes a few more days, and come the 40’s plus, niggles can continue and injury or strain becomes harder to shake off. As early as our mid 30’s the degenerative process starts, the rate and location is very dependent on lifestyle past and present, family history, and previous injury. Spinal discs are changing their make up, from plump, hydrated cushions to dryer, thinner pads! This change can create a vulnerability and it is this period when you are most likely to suffer a disc bulge or injured disc. Circulation and drainage is not what it was and our soft tissues lose their elasticity.
So,
how can we get better and stay better?
Here is a clever graph to show the route to success:
Stick to the plan
The ideal is to complete the course of treatment recommended by the therapist and reach the area on the graph where you actually improve your overall wellbeing to better than before your health started to decline.
I have lost count of the patients that have said ‘I’ve never felt this good before in my life’ or ‘I feel better than I have done for years’!
Rarely is it possible to completely change lifestyle, work or family commitments in order to maintain the benefits of treatment or to completely avoid strain on the body, so a regular maintenance treatment will then ensure that your wellbeing doesn’t decline again.
It’s time for your body check up
At the point we experience pain, wellbeing declines, and we feel a forced change in our lifestyle (perhaps we can’t exercise how or when we like, or work a full day), this triggers a call for help, usually having tried to ignore the pain for several weeks.
Treatment begins, and occasionally there is further decline in symptoms 12 to 24 hours after the first session as a result of the body reacting and responding to change.
Usually from the second treatment onwards, there is rapid improvement and relief of symptoms. As improvement continues, there is the temptation to stop treatment in this ‘improving’ stage. If treatment is stopped as you are crossing back over the ‘trigger point’ line, the problem almost always reoccurs and wellbeing declines again.
We all commit to regular eye check ups, dental check ups, car check ups, even regular hair appointments, so why omit a body check up?! Maintenance, or MOT type sessions are imperative to hold and prolong the effects of treatment, and to ensure areas of strain are picked up before they become symptomatic thereby slowing down degeneration.
Check ups are also an opportunity to review and update exercise programs, offer a gentle (or sometimes firm!) prod of reminder to check posture, watch time spent at the desk or in the car, experience relaxation and stimulation, and reach greater feelings of wellbeing than ever before!
Ask your Osteopath what maintenance program would be most suitable for you!

Buying second-hand doesn’t make you less of a parent
Jo aka Slummy Single Mummy shares her love for pre-loved and helps launch the Sudocrem Great British Pre-Loved Awards.
I was young when my first daughter, Bee, was born and money was tight. I had to be clever and made a lot of things myself, including a hand-painted border of every single Mr Men character to go around her cot. While some people might feel like they need to spend hundreds of pounds on all the latest baby “essentials,” I loved shopping second-hand, finding bargains in charity shops and going through bags of hand-me-down clothes.
trust like a basic body and hair wash, soothing Sudocrem antiseptic healing cream for nappy rash, eczema and sore skin or the new Sudocrem Naturals Nappy Cream made with 96% naturally derived ingredients.
A tub of Sudocrem antiseptic healing cream really does go a long way. I remember using it on Bee when she was little and it seemed to last forever! Bee uses it now for Joey - a big tub at home and a handy My Little Sudocrem (£2.99) to pop into his changing bag for outings and for nursery. Sudocrem has been trusted by generations since 1931 and our family is clearly proof of that!
When you’re done, pass it on
Unless you’re planning another baby immediately, there’s no point filling up your loft with baby stuff so share the love and pass things on. Gift to friends and family as hand-me-downs or sell online or at nearlynew sales to raise some money for your next pre-loved bargain.
It’s been 27 years now since I painted that Mr Men border but I’ve not given up loving homemade and second-hand. Just recently I found Joey a Fisher Price stove in a charity shop just like the one I had when I was his age. It brought back so many happy memories and I’m sure it will make a lot more - proof that there’s a lot of love in pre-loved!
Here are a few lessons I learnt as a parent: Buying second-hand doesn’t make you less of a parent
The love you have for your baby isn’t defined by what you spend on them. It’s about the quality time you spend with them, the values you teach them and the love you show them in your words and actions every day.
You can pay £1,000 on a brand new travel system or £10 on a pushchair at a car boot sale (which is what I did - bargain!) and it says nothing about you as a parent. Fact.
Pre-loved clothes are a no-brainer
There are two inescapable facts about babies - they grow quickly and they are messy - both of which mean it’s pointless spending money on new clothes. I was lucky that Bee had two uncles just a year older than her. She wore a lot of blue dungarees and jumpers with tractors on them and couldn’t have cared less. Save your money instead for coffee and cake with new parenting friends (trust me, it’s a much better investment).
Keep it simple
Forget the bathroom full of creams and potions. Your baby isn’t going to be checking the labels on their toiletries - they’ll be happy if they’re clean and comfy. Stick to the simple, multipurpose products that you
To celebrate all things pre-loved, Sudocrem is launching the Great British Pre-Loved Awards on Monday 5th June to coincide with World Environment Day. There are six categories to choose from including best charity or vintage shop and best pre-loved online. Entries will be judged by an expert panel of pre-loved champions including Great British Sewing Bee finalist Brogan Sommerville and BBC Interiors Design Masters finalist, Jack Kinsey.
All entries will go into a prize draw to win a £1,000 Airbnb voucher. Happy Days!

Council and community groups join forces to develop Community Energy Projects across Test Valley
Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) is launching an exciting new programme to promote and develop community energy projects across the Test Valley as a way of helping its parishes and communities reach net zero. It is partnering with Community Energy South (CES) and local community energy group Dragonfly Power to deliver a two-year initiative, which is being funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund as part of a borough wide programme to help communities and businesses to decarbonise.
Community energy is about people coming together to generate low-carbon heat and power and reducing energy use. It involves developing community-owned renewables – such as solar panels on the rooftops of community buildings – and supporting local households to reduce their energy use as a route to developing lower carbon communities.
In addition to supporting Dragonfly Power to develop a portfolio of community owned solar projects across the Test Valley, CES will work with communities to develop a network of trained community energy champions that can deliver energy support and advice to householders. These energy champions can set households on the pathway to reducing household energy costs and improving energy efficiency.
To kick start the project, a launch event is being held at Stockbridge Town Hall (Hurford Hall) on Tuesday 13 June at 6pm, which is an opportunity to find out more about this exciting programme and how communities can get involved.
Graham Smith, Head of Planning Policy and Economic Development at Test Valley Borough Council, said:
“We are keen to support the development of community energy as a way of helping the communities and businesses in the borough reach carbon neutrality and tackle climate change. We look forward to working closely with communities, CES and Dragonfly Power to achieve these aims.”
Ollie Pendered, CEO of Community Energy South said:
“We’re very happy to be working with Test Valley and Dragonfly Power on this ambitious new programme. With the cost-of-living crisis, effective energy advice for local communities has never been more important. Renewable energy will also be key to our future net zero aims, as well as building local energy resilience.”
Anton Page, Chair of Dragonfly Power, said:
“At Dragonfly Power, we are excited to be starting this project. As a first step, we would like to involve as many local people as possible to get involved and will be undertaking a programme of community outreach and engagement to encourage communities to become active participants.”
Wallop Artists History
A small group of Wallop artists grouped together in the early 1980s and formed what was to grow and develop into a successful and dynamic society with a widespread local membership.
Peter Blakesley, a retired architect, ran drawing classes in St Peter’s Church Hall. He taught the rules of drawing and ran the class with a rod of iron. No fancy, imaginative work came from these classes, but we did learn perspective, line and wash, tone, and pencil discipline, albeit from an architect’s point of view.
The huge change happened came when Libby Pike joined the fledgling Wallop Artists. Her flamboyant, vibrant watercolours were inspirational. Together with Cynthia Bezance, they ran a weekly painting afternoons which began to attract a lot of new members. The workshops brought in experienced art tutors from many different approaches. The annual exhibition became an important event in the social calendar and brought in the income to expand the events programme.
There have been many changes over the years which include the introduction of a Facebook website. But the core principles remain: the love and practice of art in its many forms from fine art to crafts. All levels are made welcome. The evening and afternoon demonstrations and workshops with experienced artists encourage and develop existing skills. The exhibitions give the opportunity for members to showcase their work to a wider public. During the summer months there are informal Monday afternoon painting sessions around the locality.
Today
There are now over 70 members in the Wallop Artists group of amateur and professional artists and craftspeople. They meet in the Wallops in the Test Valley, though members come from many of the surrounding towns and villages. Whilst most members paint in a number of media, there are also sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers and others.
The Wallop Artists group hold evening and afternoon demonstrations and all day workshops in the Wallops Parish Hall. During the summer months they have informal Monday afternoon painting around the locality. Their annual exhibition is held in the Wallops Parish Hall in June each year. https://wallopartists.art/

Bringing the joys of spring into our bedrooms
Local botanical artist, Katy McIntyre Brown, brings fabrics to life with ecological hand-painted fabric prints Lockerley, Hampshire
Katy McIntyre Brown, a talented botanical artist, is capturing the beauty of nature through her exquisite hand-painted fabric prints. Katy’s unique designs, inspired by the natural world of plants and flowers, have been creating interest among art lovers and interiors enthusiasts alike.
With a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for botanical art, Katy uses her artistic talent to transform her original hand-painted designs into stunning fabric prints. She has been painting and teaching for twenty years, and during Covid developed her own fabric label, Katy Botanicals. Her work reflects her passion for nature, not only by showcasing the intricate details, vibrant colours, and delicate nuances of plants and flowers in each of her creations, but also by only using natural fabrics and dyes.
"I believe that nature is a work of art in itself and that botanical art should not only represent its beauty, but also be environmentally conscious," says Katy. "That's why I am committed to using organic and natural fabrics and dyes for my prints, and partnering with small ethical and traditional printing businesses here in the UK. It's important to me that my art has a positive impact on the planet while bringing the beauty of nature to life in a useable form."
Katy’s work has gained recognition for its originality and beauty and her fabrics have been used in projects from New Zealand to Kenya, even for the New York socialite’s wedding canopy. Katy has featured in Hampshire art exhibitions and her fabrics are increasingly being noticed by interior designers and decorators who appreciate the unique touch of nature that her art brings to their interiors.
As a local Hampshire artist, Katy is eager to bring her art to a wider audience and so is hosting two pop up shops in Stockbridge this spring, to introduce herself and her designs, and to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of the nature that surrounds us through her unique fabrics.
To learn more about Katy Botanicals and her hand-painted fabric prints, please visit her website at www.katybotanicals.com, or come and meet her in Stockbridge at one of her pop ups on 18/19 May and 13/14 July. For media inquiries, interview requests, or to view her portfolio, please contact Katy at The Old Post Office, Lockerley village or on: 07713 979809, email: katy@katybotanicals.com.
About Katy McIntyre Brown and Katy Botanicals
Katy started painting professionally in Nairobi, Kenya, over twenty years ago and has been painting flowers and landscapes ever since.
From her studio in the Test Valley, Katy hand paints her botanical art and fabric designs, and has an interest in the therapeutic impact that nature can have on us mentally and physically. With a Masters Degree in Textile Design from Winchester College of Art, Katy tutors and works as an artist in residence at Horatio’s Garden, UK spinal unit garden charity.
Her previous life as a psychologist in crisis communication enriches her knowledge of
mental health, art, nature and how the natural world benefits our wellbeing. Her projects are always designed to be beautiful, calming feasts for the eye and heart, and are all painted with organic and ethically produced paints; while textiles are printed on the best quality fabrics, by one of the very few remaining British bespoke textile manufacturer in the UK.
Katy can either be found working from her home studio in Hampshire, or creating her bespoke designs on location. Her work has been featured in Hampshire Life, Solent TV and Gardener’s World.
Our ethics at Katy Botanicals
We always considers the environmental impact of our materials and the energy used to create our products.
Katy uses organic and responsibly produced paints and materials to produce her paintings, our choice of natural fabrics are designed to be hardwearing and of such quality that they have longevity. All our fabrics are all printed in the UK, using organic and sustainable materials, and finally all our products are printed to order or in very short runs, to avoid overproduction and reduce our carbon footprint.
We are always researching ways to improve our environmental impact and maintain our high standards, from painting through production to postage.
We hope you love our products as much as we do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are).
1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Stockbridge Music - Review: Alexander Chance and Toby Carr, 5th May 2023
Stockbridge Music once again struck musical gold last night. The capacity audience was treated to an exquisite performance by countertenor Alexander Chance and lutenist Toby Carr, of songs dating back to the flowering of the English Renaissance.
Timed to coincide with the release of their new album, Drop not, mine eyes, these talented and personable young artists presented a programme that encompassed the music of the 16th century ‘English Orpheus’ (John Dowland) through to that of the ‘Orpheus Britannicus’ (Henry Purcell) a hundred years later. Chance’s silky and resonant timbre beautifully matched Carr’s sensitive and expressive accompaniment, and it was a joy to hear these songs performed exactly as they would have been all those centuries ago. One audience member admitted she had been sceptical about a whole evening of countertenor and lute, but she was entirely won over by the duo, as indeed was the rest of the audience, whose rapturous applause at the end filled the church for several minutes.

Save Water This Summer
With rivers running low and another dry summer predicted, many of us have water on our minds. As the weather warms, we could easily see a return to drought conditions, with consequences for both people and wildlife. But while hosepipe bans may leave our gardens less green, our local chalk streams would be in serious danger.
Hidden beneath Hampshire is a vast layer of chalk bedrock. Riddled with tiny holes, this chalk soaks up rain like a giant sponge, making it an excellent water-storing ‘aquifer’. When it can hold no more, its contents seep back out at the surface – it is these humble springs that are the sources of our beautiful chalk streams.
When it re-emerges on the surface, the water has gained many special qualities. Its passage through the aquifer has left it filtered and mineralised, and it has an unusually constant flow. It is also a cool 11°C regardless of the season, making it abundant in dissolved oxygen. In combination, these attributes are hugely valuable for wildlife.
Unsurprisingly, however, there is also value for Hampshire’s human population. We draw most of our water directly from the aquifer by boring holes into the bedrock; a process called ‘abstraction’. When there is too little to go around, chalk stream species like the brown trout and white-clawed crayfish can face stranding and suffocation.
Water is drawn from the aquifer to meet our demand, so we all have the power to lessen the pressure on our chalk streams. Simple measures like taking shorter showers, or keeping a jug in the fridge instead of running the tap for a cold drink, can really add up. It’s also worth checking for leaks, which can waste gallons of water per year.
If you’re a keen gardener, laying down mulch and digging in compost will help your soil to capture rain. You could also install a water butt or create a small rain garden. When you add new plants, look for drought-tolerant species. Finally, water your garden deeply but infrequently – this will encourage your plants to grow deep root systems.
To boost your efforts, why not see if you’re eligible for a free home visit from Southern Water? You can get expert advice, leak detection, and water-saving devices – all for free. Anji in Andover said of her visit, “I had gadgets in my taps, a new shower head, and a water butt installed for free. I'm very careful about my water usage, so was pleased to be able to save more.”
Depending on your location, having one of these home visits could even give you the chance to win £500 off your water bill. You can learn more water saving tips, and find out about our special prize draw, at www.hiwwt.org.uk/saveeverydrop

five A Levels each - conducting dozens of biochemical experiments. Eren said: “We have the opportunity to come into the lab, outside of lesson time, and pursue our own practical projects. All the barriers are taken down when you’re at Winchester College and it’s like working in a proper research institute.”
A team of Winchester College pupils has won US$25,000 as runners-up in an international sustainability competition. In an online awards ceremony on 24 April, the Earth Foundation announced that the three pupils – Maks, Eren and Alistaircompeting under the team name ‘Bactoplastics’, placed in the top four out of 1290 teams worldwide.
The Earth Prize is an annual, global competition for teenage students, run by Geneva-based The Earth Foundation, that rewards the ideas and projects with the most potential to tackle environmental issues. In this year’s competition, there were entrants from 116 countries and territories around the world.
Working out of the school’s Biology department, Team Bactoplastics is producing a complete protocol for industrial production of biodegradable plastics, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), from food waste using genetically engineered bacteria. PHAs are fully biodegradable
A-Level pupil Maks explained: "We have designed a novel, cost-effective method for their production, which addresses the primary challenges in contemporary industrial PHA production. Our plastic substitutes most petroleum-based plastics for packaging and has potential to reduce plastic waste production by 67% in the UK. Our product would reduce pressure on landfills due to its 7-week degradation time, while repurposing up to 1.5 million tonnes of food waste annually.”
The pupils spend 20 hours per week in the laboratory – on top of revising for
The pupils have also secured a partnership with University College London to continue their work in their labs over the summer months. The team will be investing their prize money back into the project to try and ensure it can evolve to have a real-world impact.
