Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture
the Uk's top
Happy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street.
We have never had less than a 5 star review and have won the HOUZZ best
of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses. We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and unexciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are
just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.
So whether you need an amazing kitchen, utility, bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, office, media wall or living room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans.

Whether you want to just change your doors, or change everything you can see on the face, we can utilise your existing units, and change all the trims and panels, just like in the photos above, yes that really was a makeover, with a couple of small changes.
Call us today for a free of charge home visit.
Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

Posture: Don’t just sit there!
How can I check my own posture?
What do we mean by ‘posture’? It is rather an over-used word and can be confusing. You could interchange the word ‘shape’ for the word ‘posture’. When I assess shape I am looking at the position of the body when sitting or standing, and where the centre of gravity lies. It is how the body has adapted to misalignment that creates poor posture and an altered centre of gravity. Looking at the body from the side the spinal shape should be that of an elongated S, with a plumb line running from ear lobe, though the shoulder, hip, knee and down to the ankle bone. Wearing high heels (actually, any height of heel), prolonged desk-work, screen time, driving, repetitive movement and obesity can all affect the shape of our bodies and contribute to poor posture.
So how can I recognise if I have bad posture?
There are many, many symptoms of bad posture, all caused by the body being used inefficiently, such as
• Muscle degradation: eg. mushy abs, tight hips and limp glutes (buttocks)
• Leg disorders: varicosities and osteoporosis
• Brain fog, neck and shoulder tension
• Back pain, loss of flexibility and disc damage
• Organ damage: heart disease, high blood pressure, even colon, breast and uterine cancer
But what if I don’t have any symptoms?
If you don’t have any symptoms, be proactive! Check your posture, here’s how:
Stand in front of a mirror
• Check the position of your ear lobes, are they even?
• Check your shoulders, are they the same height?
• Check the skin creases at your waist, is one bigger than the other? If you see any discrepancy, you may have a sideways curve in your spine and/or imbalance in your pelvis.
• Can you lift your toes up? If you can’t, your weight is too far forward.
• Are your feet turning out to the sides or are your knees slightly turning in? If so, there will be increased torsion through the hips, knees and feet. Without bending forwards, lower your head to look down
• Can you see your knees and most of your foot? If you can’t, you are pushing your pelvis too far forward (like me in the right-hand picture). Now stand with your back to the wall, heels 10cm away from the wall
• Can you feel the back of your head, shoulder blades and bottom touching the wall? If not, your centre of gravity is too far forward.
Now lie on your back with your arms out to your sides and your elbows bent to 90°, backs of the hands towards the floor, in a floor angel position.
• Are you able to relax the back of your wrists on the floor?
• If you push your wrists down to the floor, do your ribs pop up and does your back arch? If so, your upper back is rounded and shoulders forwards.
Good posture is more than just remembering to sit or stand straight. It is embracing a whole lifestyle that also includes a variety of different and efficient movements throughout the day in order to reinforce good alignment.
Variety is key here. Having a job or hobby that although active, keeps you moving in the same way over and over again, is almost as detrimental as a job that binds you to your desk or car.
Some ideas to get you moving throughout your day:
• Squat to empty the dishwasher, washing machine or reaching into the bottom of a cupboard
• Grab the top and sides of a door frame every time you pass though and hang out there for a while
• Hop over the threshold of every doorway
• Stretch your calves on the bottom step of the stairs (toes on the step, drop your heels down) every time before you go up
• Use air cushions to sit on and standing desks in the office, and walk around when on the phone
• Sit on the floor wherever possible (have a picnic)
• Have some barefoot time daily
• Get down, get up, get out, just don’t sit!
Don’t just block out an hour to exercise, put a little activity into everything you do. Forget the artificial distinction between exercise and life, and change your lifestyle to become a little more active in everything you do.
Go to our website for free downloads on posture, exercise, workspace set up and the dangers of sitting.

News from the Wallops WI
As the nights draw in this year it seems summer is still with us. Temperatures during September have been unusually high with warm sunny days and cool misty evenings and mornings. A true Indian summer with little rain and our garden is still bright and colourful with flowers that should have faded weeks ago. Long may it continue I’m sure many of us would say and it is lovely to be able to sit outside and enjoy the warmth knowing that the heating will have to be turned back on eventually.
Autumn is on its way of course and in October the Wallops WI will welcome Dr John Hughes to our meeting on Thursday October 12th to speak about ‘Where have all the birds gone.’ It is undeniable that our bird population is diminishing much due to human intervention in their habitats and behaviour and this talk will hopefully go some way to understanding the issues. A complicated and important subject that needs to be addressed if we are to be able to enjoy the beauty and sounds of birdlife for years to come.
In September our Open Meeting to hear about the life of a Forensic Officer proved to be very popular and enlightening. Paul Cooper was an excellent speaker and managed to make the often-harrowing work of the Police in forensics both fascinating and respectful. A
Copse at Bury Hill named in memory of Queen Elizabeth II
large turnout of members and a good number of guests enjoyed hearing about the intricacies and importance of the work. Paul had learnt about forensic science during his years in the army starting as a 17-year-old raw recruit, then through Iraq and Afghanistan and many other troubled places around the world until he eventually joined the Police force and settled in Wiltshire. The evening concluded with many questions and quite a lot of cake! There will be another opportunity to join us at an Open Meeting next year when everyone is welcome and the choice of speaker will hopefully appeal to everyone.
On the night we were also able to admire the Wallops WI wall hanging which is now displayed on the wall in the main hall commemorating over 100 years of the WI in the Wallops. It looks truly amazing. We would like to reach out to any women who might be interested in seeing what the friendship of the WI is all about and the lovely wall hanging tells our story perfectly.
Why not come along to our next meeting on Thursday October 12th at 7.30 in the Parishes Hall? You will receive a warm welcome and might be encouraged to become a member. We would love to meet you especially if you are new to the villages and want to meet new friends.
Pam Quickthe winter of 2022 at Bury Hill by Andover Trees United along with local school children, as part of their annual planting fortnight. A further 1,500 will be planted this winter.
The Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Phil Lashbrook, delivered a speech at the ceremony and officially declared the naming of the area.
Cllr Philip Lashbrook said:
The Godolphin Literary Festival is back for a fifth year, bringing to Salisbury a fresh and captivating combination of authors for all ages and tastes. The Literary Festival has always been about encouraging reading and writing for all ages. This year there are inspiring events in the school day for local students to encourage reading for pleasure and two events later in the day open to the wider Salisbury community.
Godolphin is thrilled to announce Gill Hornby as our evening speaker to discuss her latest novel, Godmersham Park, on Wednesday 11 October at 7pm, in the Performing Arts Centre (tickets available here. A journalist surrounded by a family of authors, she was drawn to fiction herself a decade ago – Gill is married to Robert Harris and sister of Nick Hornby –and her stories span subjects from mothers at the school gate to bringing alive Jane Austen’s world and family.
At a ceremony in September, a meadow at the new Bury Hill site in Andover has been dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The copse area has been officially named Queen Elizabeth Memorial Copse, as a tribute to Her Majesty and the number of important connections she has to the borough of Test Valley. Bury Hill was purchased by Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) in 2021 for wildlife, recreation and public access to the countryside. The site has been transformed into a beautiful chalk grassland area which visitors can easily walk around and take in lovely views across the borough.
As part of the Queens Green Canopy national initiative, 1,500 Native whips were planted in
“It was a privilege and an honour to deliver a speech and officially name the area, Queen Elizabeth Memorial Copse. There are a number of important connections between the borough of Test Valley and Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Broadlands in Romsey where the late Queen frequently visited throughout her life and the home of the Army Headquarters in Andover.
“The Palace and Cabinet Office have kindly granted Test Valley permission to dedicate this copse as a long-lasting memorial in honour of the late Queen and as a living legacy and tribute to the service she gave to the country.”
For information on how to find the site visit the Test Valley Borough Council website.
In another event open to all Godolphin Alumna Dolly Jones will be interviewed by Godolphin Sixth students about her writing career on Thursday 12 October at 4.15pm (tickets available here). New St Swithun’s Prep Head Liz Norris reflects on first few weeks
children engaged in their daily activities and to feel the pulse of the school.
An early highlight was observing a history lesson in the Year 2 classroom. It was the first day back at school for these young learners, yet they were enthusiastic and engaged throughout. It is a testament to the quality of education and the nurturing environment that St. Swithun's provides that the girls were so keen to learn in their new classroom, under the guidance of their new teachers.
It is abundantly clear that learning is at the heart of St. Swithun's and that it is a place where both students and staff thrive. The passion for education that I have witnessed in both our students and our dedicated staff excites me. We are a community that values knowledge, curiosity, and growth, and I am committed to fostering this culture even further.
Liz Norris - Head of PrepAs I step into my role as the new Head of Prep here at St. Swithun's, I find myself reflecting upon these first few weeks. It has been an absolute privilege to join this vibrant community and I am keen to share my initial thoughts and experiences.
One of the most inspiring aspects of my initial days here has been the opportunity to witness the school in action, to see the
It is very evident that music holds a special place in this community and another wonderful moment I have experienced multiple times is when the entire school comes together to sing as one. The harmonious sound is truly beautiful and looking out to see everyone singing together has been very moving.
The sense of community at St. Swithun's is more than just a concept; I have read a lot about the importance placed on community at the school, but in these past few weeks, I have truly lived and breathed it. From conversations with parents to interactions with students, I have seen the genuine care and concern that permeates every corner of this school.
As we move forward, I am excited about the journey that lies ahead. Together, we will continue to nurture the minds and hearts of our students, providing them with an education that not only equips them with knowledge but also develops character, builds resilience, and fosters a love for learning.
If you are a parent or guardian interested in looking around, we would love to show you everything that St Swithun’s Prep has to offer. Please contact prepadmissions@ stswithuns.com for more information.

Ghana volunteering for Embley students
Over 50 Embley students recently travelled to Ghana to volunteer at Embley’s partnership school, Little Roses - a primary and secondary school of about 200 children in Anloga, a rural fishing village between the Atlantic coast and Keta Lagoon. As part of the 10-day trip, students helped with teaching, sports coaching, and building and renovating the partner school. They also volunteered at two other schools in the area: Dedzizi Community School and Dornorgbor School.
Embley has been working with Little Roses since 2019 and whilst this was the school’s second visit to Ghana, this is the first group of students to have volunteered at the partnership school. Although Little Roses is privately run, it is severely underfunded. In some classrooms the floors are sand, and walls are waist height and open to the elements - a priority for Little Roses this year was to concrete the floors of three classrooms. There is also a significant lack of basic equipment such as textbooks. All
lessons use a blackboard and chalk, even for the workings of a computer in Computer Science.
While there, it was an honour for Embley to officially open the new water tank which has been installed at Little Roses as a result of Embley fundraising; really highlighting the significance of clean water for healthy living.
Students also learnt about Ghanaian culture, African drumming and ceremonies as well as being challenged to play a game of football by the local girls’ U18 team who are vying for a place in the Ghanaian Premiership. Embley students also learnt about the natural geography of Ghana visiting the coast, Wli Waterfall and hiking through the rainforest.
As well as providing a range of help during the trip, Embley students took donations of sports equipment, clothes and stationary (from the wider Embley community) in their suitcases.
A group of Embley students will return to Little Roses in 2024 and will continue fundraising for future development projects.

Save our Chalk Streams
Here in Hampshire, we have some of nature’s greatest gems in the form of our local chalk streams. If you love exploring the outdoors, you’ve probably been treated to the idyllic scene they offer: lush green plants drifting in crystal clear water, the serenity broken only by the resident wildlife. Iconic species like the mayfly, kingfisher, and water vole all call these places home.
Chalk streams appear commonplace due to their prevalence in our region, but in reality we’re very lucky – only 210 exist worldwide, and 85% of those are in England. The reason for their rarity is also the source of their special qualities: fed by an underground chalk aquifer, their water is unusually cool, clear, and oxygenated. This makes them wonderful havens for nature.
Sadly, all is not well with these remarkable habitats. Many are failing their ecological health tests, and every single one is in the worst category for chemical standards. The causes are numerous, with over-
abstraction and sewage pollution among them. What’s more, the government’s target for returning the streams to good health is now decades away, in 2063.
When it comes to tackling these issues, legal designations like Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) or Special Area of Conservation (SAC) can be somewhat helpful. Yet only a small number of England’s chalk streams have such protections, and the existing framework is too narrow to fully address the impact of pressures like housebuilding and agriculture.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has now launched a campaign to raise awareness about this pressing problem. ‘Save our Chalk Streams’ proposes bespoke legal protections for all chalk streams and greater investment into restoration projects, reduced abstraction, upgraded sewage treatment works, and an expanded system of monitoring and enforcement.
You can play a crucial role in the campaign by completing an e-action that asks your MP to push for change. Our chalk streams
can’t wait 40 years to be healthy, and we need your help – visit www.hiwwt.org.uk/ rivers. You can also support chalk stream conservation through the Watercress and Winterbournes scheme – visit www.hiwwt. org.uk/winterbournes
