The extent to which this year’s theme – “Conflict & Cooperation” – touches the nerve of the times can be seen both in the intensity of the debates and discussions and in the Forum’s huge resonance in the media. You can get an idea of this over the following pages. Going forward, a glance at our plans for next year promises yet more excitement. Under the 2018 theme of “Diversity & Resilience”, hundreds of experts from all over the world will discuss diversity, equilibrium and fragility, along with a focus on the resilience, robustness and innovativeness of our societies,

our environment, economy and culture – all themes that will shape our future. We are already inviting you to join the conversation and contribute your views! While we are on the subject of diversity: four years ago we decided to make the European Forum Alpbach even more inclusive and to invite new stakeholders on board. As you can see on the left, our network has expanded, taking in major universities and companies to small initiatives and organisations, spanning the boundaries between nations and disciplines. Alpbach in Motion – Summit of Emerging Leaders 40 young European leaders gather in Alpbach to discuss Europe’s economic future in an interactive setting. The insights gained here flow into the Alpbach Economic Symposium.

Alpbach Symposia The main programme consists of several two- to three-day conferences on future issues in the built environment, higher education, financial markets, health, politics, law, technology and economics. Shorter events, such as the Tyrol Days, complement the programme. The arts are integrated into the symposia.

Alpbach Media Academy Supported by media studies lecturers, young journalists from all over Europe spend three weeks reporting on the events of the conference, taking a critical and cross-media approach.

Seminar Week & Scholarship Programme More than 700 young people from over 80 countries benefit from scholarships that enable them to come to Alpbach. They can choose from a programme of over 20 academic seminars.

Alpbach Laxenburg Group In the Alpbach Laxenburg Group, respected figures from the sciences and humanities, politics, business and civil society work on concepts and recipes for solving global problems such as climate change and the educational divide (in partnership with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis Laxenburg).

Alpbach Campus The “Alpbach Campus” accompanying programme offers the opportunity to acquire new, practical knowledge for professional development. The Alpbach Campus includes the “Entrepreneurship” summer school, the Professional Programmes in “Art of Hosting”, “European Health Care and Social Systems in Transition” and “Strategies of Influence”, the “Our World’s Future” simulation workshop and the university course on “European Law”. Academic partners including Cambridge University contribute their expertise.

Retreats in Alpbach A number of organisations use the informal and interdisciplinary atmosphere of Alpbach for meetings and retreats, including, for the first time this year, the global “Ethics in Action” initiative. 3

Dialogue laboratory “Strong in Hope” in Berlin The Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin was the setting for an interdisciplinary initiative in which pioneering thinkers from Austria and Germany developed positive narratives on social changes. Alpbach Dialogues at the Wiener Konzerthaus New in autumn 2017: two fascinating figures from culture, academia, politics and society take to the stage of the Wiener Konzerthaus to get to the bottom of the great themes of our times. The guests on the first evening were Daniel Barenboim, conductor and citizen of the world, and the Swiss political activist Flavia Kleiner.

How can we manage migration? There are few more polarising questions today than: What path should Europe’s migration policy take? Essentially, two concepts are up for discussion: on the one hand a restrictive model with a focus on ethnicity and culture, and on the other a selective model, based on qualifications and economic criteria. Who dares participation, wins At “Re:think Austria”, stakeholders from politics, business, academia, culture and civil society use a participative process to develop new approaches to core political themes. Inputs from inspirational thinkers and an innovative communication concept play a central role. Ideological barriers lose 11

The fascinating world of science She is one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most famous astrophysicists. In the Alpbach classroom, Lisa Kaltenegger lost no time in making clear her enthusiasm for science. The idea of finding genuine evidence of life up there among the stars also gripped the

participants in her seminar. Pioneers like Lisa Kaltenegger have the ability to light the spark of research and science in the minds of many young scholarship holders from all over the world.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way Whether in large groups or small, participants at the Health Symposium shed light on the challenges facing healthcare. The picture shows the breakout session with the Dutch care pioneer Jos de Blok (left), who reported on his experiences as the founder of a participative care organisation. The secret to his project’s success is empowering 15

the care workers. The initiative is considered a pioneering project for the European care sector. Case studies that demonstrate concrete success like this one can widen our vision, showing the improvements and new approaches we need in healthcare.

Acting ethically When representatives of all world religions come together, the diversity of worldviews is tangible. This is what happened in Alpbach at the retreat of the “Ethics in Action” initiative. Prominent representatives of the Catholic and Orthodox churches, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism

were invited to delve into the role that ethics can play in sustainable economic development. The photograph shows Cardinal John Onaiyekan from Nigeria during a public debate on ethics and morality. The resulting paper can be found at www.alpbach.org/ethicsinaction. 16

A university with symbolism The attempt to intervene in the academic future of his respected university marks a low point in the history of political influence on free and independent scholarship in Europe. Michael Ignatieff, Rector of the Central European University in Budapest, is aware of the

weighty symbolism of his institution in the struggle for academic freedom. In Alpbach, he presented his strategies against political interference, not only on the podium but also in a Fireside Talk with scholarship holders on the meadow above the Congress Centre.

A podium guest of the third kind observed from the stage while the flesh and blood audience got excited about him and his kind. Does he already know what awaits us humans? In Alpbach, he couldn’t be persuaded to comment.

The consequences of automation and the future role of robots were the major topics at the Alpbach Technology Symposium. A representative of this much-discussed species, “Roboy”, the robot “born” at the University of Zurich, calmly 21

Action! Always ready to whip out a notebook and pencil, camera or microphone: 14 young journalists from all over Europe became an editorial team for the duration of the conference. They published the best stories from the event in a blog and the “Scope” magazine.

breath; out; breathing It was the day when the suffering of refugees became manifest on a motorway in the heart of Austria: on 27 August 2015, 71 people died trapped in the back of a lorry. In his play “breath; out; breathing”, a paraphrase of “71 or The Curse

of the Prime Number”, director Peter Wagner looks back at the victims’ fate exactly two years after the tragedy. The photograph shows a scene from the performance, which formed the shocking prelude to the 2017 Political Symposium.

Protecting the independence of the judiciary His verdict thrust Brexit before the British parliament and himself, as the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top judge, into the headlines of the British tabloid press: Lord John Thomas of Cwmgiedd (centre), Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, discussed

populism and justice in Alpbach. Under fire following his Brexit verdict, he spoke to the participants of the Legal Symposium about how courts can defend themselves against public criticism.

The future of doing business Usually to be found meeting in conference halls or start-up offices, in Alpbach they wandered Alpine pastures to share their experience and knowledge: 40 young managers and entrepreneurs from all over Europe spent three days pondering the major questions of the European economy and the practical approaches their

Global politics in the classroom Concentrated on the task at hand: in the Breakout Sessions of the Political Symposium, even the windowsills were packed as the groups analysed political praxis and came up with new approaches. During the Forum, Alpbachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secondary school became a fully staffed think-tank in which the borders between podium and public

quickly disappeared. You have the floor! this brings greater insights as well as the chance to make their own contribution to the debate. The verdict at the end? Each participant signals which side has persuaded them by choosing a particular door when leaving the hall.

Based on the legendary debate format of the Oxford Union, the two “Alpbach Debates” pitted two opposing positions against each other. The rules are those of a duel and give each side the opportunity to state their case in detail while the other can question it at any time. For the audience, 33

Casting politics in concrete Wolf D. Prix (top photo) is one of the world’s most influential architects. On the stage of the Erwin Schrödinger Hall he laid down his arguments like bricks to build his vision of the future-proof design of public space. The way public space is used, designed and built on is a highly political question.

Everyone agrees on this. But the extent to which there needs to be discussion about its concrete implementation in the built environment became clear from the lively debate and numerous inputs from participants. 36

Alpbach Breakfast Clubs When it comes to enabling the most in-depth and direct form of dialogue between participants and speakers, the programme organisers pull out all the stops. The Breakfast Clubs of the Alpbach Financial Market Symposium are a perfect example. They depart from traditional conference rituals 37

Alpbach Dialogues at the Wiener Konzerthaus The Mozart Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus is normally a venue for the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest musicians. But in the Alpbach Dialogues, pioneering contemporary thinkers took to the stage to get to grips with the major questions of our time. The first guests were the world-famous musician 39

Daniel Barenboim and the Swiss political activist Flavia Kleiner. Moderated by Cornelia Vospernik, a stimulating dialogue on political utopias and the Europe of tomorrow developed, whetting the audienceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appetite for future evenings in this new discussion series.

Not for pessimists Cultural pessimists and cynics think that the youth of today are good for nothing. In Alpbach, more than 700 young people from all over the world proved otherwise. They travelled to Alpbach to immerse themselves in an environment bursting with novel ideas, new ways of thinking

Create meaning and encourage young people The scholarship programme of the non-profit private foundation of the European Forum Alpbach enables young people from across the world to come to Alpbach and to participate in the Forum. Here they find an intellectual environment in which they can tackle key socio-political questions in depth. The international exchange, the constructive dialogue and the substantive debates with renowned academics, managers and thinkers influence and connect the scholarship holders far beyond Alpbach. Thus the non-profit foundation of the European Forum Alpbach makes a sustainable contribution towards European integration and intercultural understanding.

Without the support of national and international partners, the extensive scholarship programme would not be possible. More than 700 scholarship holders took part in the European Forum Alpbach 2017. This was made possible by sponsors, the international Forum Alpbach Network and the foundation’s own funds. The foundation was established by the association “European Forum Alpbach” as a non-profit private foundation of the same name in 2005. European Forum Alpbach The first European Forum Alpbach took place in 1945 as the “International College Weeks”. Founded in 1948 as a non-profit association based in Vienna, it acts independently of any ideology, religion or political party. The association only functions thanks to the vast number of people who, with the

exception of the organisation team, all give their time voluntarily to the Forum Alpbach. They have contributed to making the European Forum Alpbach one of the most important interdisciplinary dialogue platforms in Europe for science, politics, economics and culture today.

Audited and transparent The annual accounts were presented by the administrative bodies of the association for use in accordance with the statutes and were fully explained to the executive management by the voluntary auditors Günther Schrems (Director of Organisation Sales Processes, Erste Bank) and Max Kothbauer (Vice President, Oesterreichische Nationalbank) and the bookkeeping and financial management of the organisation were assessed as in order. In 2016 the association balanced its books.

Each year, the European Forum Alpbach has its annual accounts audited by Sedelmayer & Klier Steuerberater und Wirtschaftsprüfer GmbH. This renders account of the money that sponsors and donors entrust to us. The audit for the 2016 financial year was unanimously passed by the annual general meeting on March 22, 2017: “In our view, the present accounts are a transparent and comprehensible representation of the business processes. The financial situation of the organisation can be assessed as in order.”
