Journey to Thailand Travelling from Heathrow to Phuket, we were met by friendly, knowledgeable guides and taken on an insightful transfer to join the beautiful Boudicca. On arrival at the ship, our luggage was taken to our rooms and we were welcomed on board. Having an overnight on board in Phuket meant we were able to explore the ship and relax before heading out the following day.

Experiences

Our tour in Phuket was to Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, travelling from the ship to the lagoon pier to join a speedboat for our scenic cruise. Our next stop was Ko Panyi, a 200-yearold sea gypsy village, which was one of the first communities to settle in the bay. The entire village is built on stilts above the water. After a tour of the village, we headed over to Rang Yai Island for a Thai meal. After time to relax on the white sand beach and a swim in the clear waters, we returned to the pier and the awaiting Boudicca. Back on board, there was time to enjoy the sailaway before getting ready for dinner. Dining is a high point of every Fred. Olsen cruise; expertly crafted dishes are served by waiters that provide a service that is second to none. After dinner, there is a programme of evening entertainment to suit everyone, ranging from music, cabaret and quick-fire stand-up comedy to the relaxed tones of a grand piano or a night of dancing in the Lido Lounge. The next day we arrived in Sabang, Weh Island, Indonesia. Representing Indonesia’s northernmost and westernmost point, this small volcanic island (often called Sabang after its capital) is known for its diverse

marine ecosystem. Guided by an English-speaking local, we were taken past historic Dutch colonial buildings to the colourful markets; the Century Sabang Museum, which houses items of artistic and cultural significance; and the old primary school. The evening comprised a truly premium dining experience at The Grill, featuring the finest cooked-toorder steaks and sumptuous desserts served in elegant, sophisticated surroundings. A day at sea offered the opportunity to relax on board and enjoy the intimate and more traditional cruise experience that Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offers. Boudicca boasts three heated pools, a selection of relaxing bars and lounges, a library and card room gaming tables. There’s also a full entertainment programme that includes guest speakers and performers, arts and craft lessons, fun quizzes, Yoga, Pilates and other fitness activities. You can pamper yourself with a visit to the spa or pickup a holiday bargain in the onboard shops. And don’t forget to sample the traditional afternoon tea. Arriving into Singapore, there is so much to see and do. A city orientation tour, a boat ride along the Singapore river, a must-do stop at Raffles for a Singapore sling and a tour of Gardens by the Bay to visit the Flower Dome (the largest glass greenhouse in the world) combined to create the perfect last stop for the end of the trip.

ALASKA Multi-Generational Glacier Hunting

Alaska - not the first destination that springs to mind for a family holiday but, for us, it was the perfect adventure for the three generations of my cruising family, taken in style and comfort thanks to a cruise on board Cunard’s luxurious Queen Elizabeth. Our family group consisted of my husband, daughter, our two-yearold Granddaughter and myself. For me, the only way I was ever going to see Alaska was on a cruise. So, when Cunard announced that the stunning Queen Elizabeth would be cruising the region in 2019, it had to be booked. My husband was desperate to travel on the Rocky Mountaineer and, whilst the promise of endless cocktails whilst travelling in the Gold Class glass-domed coaches did appeal to me, it wasn’t something I felt the need to do. My my husband opted for the Rocky Mountaineer Banff to Vancouver pre-cruise extension and he loved every minute of it; being transported in luxury through amazing scenery via Kamloops and some fabulous hotels, whilst all luggage was taken care of. The family was reunited in Vancouver and we embarked Queen Elizabeth for 13 nights along the Inside Passage and back down to San Francisco. This, for me, was where the real holiday started. Every day was different, every port was different, the scenery and sunsets never failed to impress. We went on adventures to meet big brown bears; we saw waterfalls, icebergs and glaciers. Kayaking in Sitka, walking through Creek Street in Ketchikan, Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, a ride on the iconic White Pass Scenic Railway in Skagway and soaking up the scenery and smell of pine trees at Icy Straight Point all followed too.

The highlight of the cruise was most definitely entering Glacier Bay; it was just breathtaking. The bright blue ice glistened like diamonds in the sunshine. The sound of the ice calving broke the sereneness and stillness of the bay as it fell away and crashed to the sea below. The approach to the glacier early in the morning was beyond magical, as the scenery grew ever closer whilst chunks of ice clinked against the hull of the ship. The captain slowly spun the ship twice in the bay so everyone got a full view of every inch of the glacier. Unforgettable!

A River Cruise Recommendation River Cruising is an amazing experience like no other. You get the superb service, dining and the ‘unpack-once-but-experience-manydestinations’ benefits of an ocean cruise mixed with a more intimate small ship, lower passenger numbers and beautiful scenery as you cruise. Plus, there’s the bonus of docking in some of Europe’s most stunning cities. I have been lucky enough to sail along the Danube from Passau to Budapest and I will never forget it. Cruising into Budapest, past the impressive parliament building and under six or seven bridges from the sun deck, is wonderful. Along the way, I saw castles

and churches surrounded by forest, went shopping in tiny artisan villages and, of course, the wine tasting was a highlight. I ate more delicious food than I should and, from the ships’ restaurant, I could still see the countryside flowing past me. My cabin was lovely, with a dropdown window that made me feel immersed in all I was seeing. There was even a pool on the ship to take a dip. I would encourage everyone to give river cruising a try – it is something different for experienced cruisers and, for those who aren’t sure if an ocean

cruise is for them, it is the perfect stepping stone. Give this little bit of luxury a try! Top Tip: Nearly everything (shampoo, hairdryer etc) is provided for you in your cabin, so you can save room on your packing – just don’t forget an adapter.

An American Adventure Have you ever wondered what the real America is like? Do you wonder about those film-like photos of Southern plantation homes, with their history of splendour and slavery; The American Civil War; and Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn? Was the most difficult word you learned to spell at school Mississippi?

She holds 190 passengers at full capacity and I noticed there were quite a few solo travellers enjoying the trip, as well as multi-generation families. There was a gentleman on board who had wanted to cruise the Mississippi for 59 years and a couple who had been looking forward to experiencing this river for 35 years.

If any of these have caught your imagination, an American adventure along the Mississippi is a must. We completed a week aboard the traditional paddle steamer ‘America’ with American Cruise Lines and tied this in with a short stay in Memphis beforehand and New Orleans afterwards. The whole holiday exceeded expectations - and here are some of the reasons why...

American Cruise Lines has grown quickly and successfully on the Mississippi and other American rivers, and most trips they are close to being sold out. The cruise included daily excursions of high quality, gratuities, and wine and beer at lunch, dinner, cocktail hours...and beyond.

We headed for Memphis and were surprised how enjoyable a visit to Graceland was. It wasn’t just the trip around Graceland and seeing the remarkable home of Elvis Presley, it was also seeing all the new exhibits that recent investment has created – there’s more about the culture of the times now. It was so enjoyable and stimulating; we spent nine hours there! We also visited Sun Studios, home of the famous rock and roll pioneer, Sam Phillips, who discovered and recorded Elvis along with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. Another big highlight was when we visited the Civil Rights Museum, actually located in the Lorraine Motel, the site where Martin Luther King was assassinated. It was highly informative and extensive; a great way to get a feel for the historic part that slavery and freedom from slavery would play in the places we were about to visit. The trips were hugely informative with visits to places like • Vicksburg – site of one of the most critical Civil War battles • Plantation homes – some of which you may have seen in films or photos, offering a clear representation of the wealth, hardships and slavery • Baton Rouge – capital of Louisiana and home to a superb museum The onboard entertainment was well handled – often a small ship has lowkey entertainment. For this cruise, the artists included a national awardwinning banjo player; a well-known jazz trumpeter; the ‘Southern Belles’; and an expert on the Mississippi, its wildlife and history. Arrival at New Orleans meant a very different experience – jazz, vibrant live music and Creole food. Besides the famous ‘French Quarter’ and Bourbon Street, there were other famous landmarks including iconic Creole and Cajun restaurants, and a famous World War II museum. This was a fine way to experience a taste of real America in the South.

A very warm welcome to 2020 and I hope you enjoy the latest edition of our Cruising Magazine. Cruising is continuing to grow with many more Ocean ships both large and small being launched this year as well as many new River Cruise vessels. This summer sees 3 stunning new ships being named in Southampton, Celebrity Apex, P&O Iona and the Enchanted Princess. Clair and I have cruised on both larger and smaller cruise ships recently including the unique Cunard QM2 which was built for Transatlantic voyages and the Fred. Olsen Braemar. We visited some of our favourite ports including both Honfleur and Brugges. We also explored some new ones, such as Aviles and Gijon in northern Spain both of which have very pretty old towns and are famous for their local cider. It was fantastic to sit outside one of the historic bars having lunch watching the world go by.
