Throwback Festival
Chesney Hawkes What is your favourite 80's song and why? Nik Kershaw Wouldn't it Be Good - as a teenager I was a huge Nik fan in fact his music is one of the reasons I wanted to do what I do. Of course, now I am honoured to call him one of my best friends. It's funny how life works.
Who is your favourite artist of the 80's? Prince - no one comes close.
Which artist are you most looking forward to seeing perform on the Throwback cruise?
I have had the pleasure of seeing all of these great artists perform so I have to say I am really looking forward to spending some time with Jason.
What makes you most nostalgic for the 80's? I used to buy my vinyl, bring it back, put cello tape over the edges and put my name on the corner. I would spend hours reading the liner notes and going lyrics and discovering who wrote the songs, who the producers were, where they were recorded at. Just having that physical record was magic.
Stages Festival Ruth Bratt
(Showstoppers)
What is your favourite musical and why?
Throwback Festival Sonia
Stages Festival Jamie Lambert (Collabro)
What is your favourite 80's song and why?
What is your favourite musical and why?
'Let's wait a while' by Janet Jackson, it's a beautiful ballad. It's the first song I danced to with my husband.
My favourite musical is Waitress. It's a beautiful, funny, clever and poignant piece of theatre that I really love listening to, especially when I am baking!
Who is your favourite artist of the 80's? Whitney Houston, she had fantastic songs. Especially 'I wanna dance with somebody' and her voice was second to none.
Which artist are you most looking forward to seeing perform on the Throwback cruise? I am so looking forward to the Throwback cruise, I'm excited to see Chesney Hawkes, he's a friend of mine and Jason Donovan, also a friend and The Human League are fab!
What makes you most nostalgic for the 80's? The 80's will never die. The fantastic music, the fashion, the videos and the iconic artists. So many memories people will want to relive again and again.
What is your favourite musical theatre song? She Used to Be Mine from Waitress. It's such a sad, beautiful song and really cleverly written by Sara Bareilles, who we've met before!
Which artist/show are you most looking forward to seeing on the Stages cruise? I am most looking forward to seeing Beverley Knight. I've always been a big fan of hers, she's a phenomenal vocalist and I've really enjoyed all aspects of her career, from pop to theatre.
What one show would you be in/work on that you haven’t done already? I would love to be in The Quartet, but I would have to be a lot older! It's about four people in a retirement home who were professional musicians, putting on a concert.
Oh, there are too many! I have a soft spot for Merrily We Roll Along because it’s utterly brilliant - I loved it when I was in my 20s and now I’m in my 40s I love it in a very different, probably deeper way! Hamilton, obviously, because it’s so original and so exciting and we love improvising in the style of. Fun Home is probably the most satisfying complete experience I’ve ever had in a theatre - the sound design, the stage design, the lighting, the acting, the music, the story. That was really special.
What is your favourite musical theatre song? That changes on a daily basis - and depends on whether it’s something I like singing along to or something I like to hear. If I absolutely had to choose, it’d be the quintet from West Side Story.
Which artist/show are you most looking forward to seeing on the Stages cruise? MICHAEL BALL no contest. Pippa and I LOVE MICHAEL BALL. I’m worried that we’re going to find it a bit much...
What one show would you be in/work on that you haven’t done already? All of them. I want to be in all of them. I’d like to play King George III in Hamilton. And I also really want to be in Midsomer Murders. It’s not a musical…yet.

Taste of the Caribbean

The Caribbean, with its sugar-soft beaches, turquoise seas and gently swaying palms, is one of the world’s best-loved holiday destinations. The Caribbean is a melting pot of cultural influences, and each island of this extensive archipelago carries its own individual charm.
the capital of the Islands, is bursting with turn-of-the-century Caribbean charm, retaining the look and feel of the Caribbean 40 years ago.
St. Lucia
With so many beautiful and diverse islands, there is always somewhere or something new to explore. The Caribbean really is made for cruise holidays.
St. Lucia is an oasis of tropical calm. The island's capital, Castries, is a town of charming, pastel-coloured colonial buildings. Visitors are drawn to its exotic tropical landscape, superb beaches, crystalline waters, and colourful marine life

Cuba
This charming string of islands is situated between the North Atlantic and the Caribbean. Its capital city, Charlotte Amalie, is brimming with unique historical attractions. Stunning mountain scenery, crystalline waters, and white-sand beaches - a true slice of paradise.
The largest island in the Caribbean. Away from the enticing beaches you can dive in to colourful Cuban culture and experience the unique rhythm of local life through pulsepounding music, eclectic architecture, and local food and drink.
British Virgin Islands A collection of 60 unspoiled islands that pack the best of the Caribbean into one convenient destination. Best known as ‘nature’s little secrets’. Northern lights promise
From fjords and mountains to picturesque villages and towns, Norway is defined by its natural wonders. And few things are as dramatic as experiencing Norway in wintertime. Winter in Norway offer a great adventure for anyone who visits and gives you the chance to take part in some fantastic winter excursions such as dog sledging, snowmobiling or horseback riding in the Lofoten Islands. However the most spectacular natural wonder of them all is the Northern Lights. On occasion, the night sky over northern Norway explodes into a light show of green, white, pink, blue and violet. The unearthly beauty of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) mesmerises all who stay or travel in Polar Regions. The Northern Lights belt stretches along the northern coast from Lofoten to the North Cape. In fact, the Northern Lights are more commonly seen here than anywhere else in the world, and one of your best chances of experiencing the Northern Lights is on a Hurtigruten voyage in the winter season The 12 day Classic Round Voyage with Hurtigruten truly is something special. Visit cities like Bergen, Ålesund and Trondheim, before we cross the Arctic Circle and sail into the Arctic. Southbound you get to see Lofoten and Trollfjorden in broad daylight, before sailing along the Helgeland coast, passing the Seven Sisters Mountains.
With direct flights available to Bergen you can experience this yourself.
Northern Lights Promise The beautiful Aurora Borealis is Mother Nature’s ultimate light show. Hurtigruten know that no trip to the Arctic Circle is quite complete without experiencing this highlight (pun intended!) at least once on your journey. It is such a dazzling display of colours and shapes that if there is a no-show on your journey, they will give you another 6 or 7-day Classic Voyage FREE OF CHARGE*, so your Hurtigruten experience will be one with zero regrets.

On the M/V Victory I, a small ship exclusively designed for coastal cruising, you’ll delve into North America’s maritime history throughout the Great Lakes, set sail through the storied Georgian Bay, admire the natural beauty of Niagara Falls and take in the breathtaking vistas of the southern Canadian coast. Get closer to the Mediterranean
Martin Lister, Head of Itinerary planning at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines discusses their new 'Closer Campaign.'
Tell us more about the “Closer” concept that had been introduced at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines? It’s all about 'Bringing the World Closer' and we do this a number of ways throughout our products. We do this through our attentive staff and crew. We do this by departing from 5 UK ports rather than expecting the guests to travel to one place of departure. We do this by using our smaller ships to dock closer to the heart of destinations, taking advantage of our shorter and shallower dimensions to call to destinations that are off limits to the larger lines (e.g. Seville and Bordeaux). We dock at piers closer to the downtown areas that are not suitable for larger ships and are able to sail waterways that provide our guests with great cruising scenery. We do this through our RIBs that are an extension to our cruising experience by taking guests even closer to the destination points of interest and scenery and further into the destination. And, we also do this through the development 22 Cruising Magazine
of on board activities that tie in with the destination. This gives our guests the opportunity to get closer to the destination through themed on board activities. The Closer concept enables us to offer a much more rounded product. When our ships dock closer, they are within walking distance of the key sites or downtown area and do not require a shuttle transport from the ship, which means our guest does not have a restriction on the freedom to explore and means that their call time is their own because there is no wasting time waiting for shuttles and spending time making their way from ship to city and visa-versa.
How does this concept differ to what other cruise lines offer guests in the Mediterranean? Firstly, it’s important to mention that our itineraries are experience-led, meaning we research and develop the experiences first and then piece them together into an itinerary. So you can be confident that your itinerary and experiences deliver the best
of each destination. Furthermore, docking closer to the destination centres means that our guests do not have any restriction on their freedom to explore – something that is not always obvious when booking a cruise but is a massive benefit.
What highlights can customers expect by sailing on these Mediterranean closer voyages? On our record breaking 28-night Greek Islands cruise where Braemar is set to become the largest ship ever to transit the narrow steep-sided Corinth Canal. On our dedicated Closer Mediterranean cruises in 2018 and 2019, dock in the heart of destinations such as Gaudi-inspired Barcelona, Picasso’s Malaga, lavish Monaco, Roman Cartagena, and the French port of Marseille, where in the latter you can go Also go further afield and visit the Lavender fields in Provence during the season when it is in bloom.
Are these closer itineraries limited to the Mediterranean? No, we have dedicated closer itineraries in Norway, Baltic, Canaries, Spain, France and Scandinavia – ranging in duration from 5 nights up to 28 nights. Plus in recognition of how important this is, we have purposely planned Braemar’s entire season of UK departures to be Closer cruising in 2019 meaning the ship will be within walking distance of the downtown areas whenever it docks.
When do these sailings start? We have been operating dedicated full itinerary Closer cruising since 2015 and increased the volume since. As mentioned, on all Braemar cruises departing from the UK in 2019, our guests can benefit from being within walking distance of every destination whenever the ship is docked.

What to expect when you’re on deck A Need-To-Know For River Cruise Newbies Ocean cruising and river cruising may offer the same fundamentals in terms of sailing from one destination to another, but there are some key differences between the two. Both allow you to see more than one destination during your holiday whilst only having to unpack once, but anyone making the leap from the open ocean to the winding waterways for the first time should expect a completely different experience. Here are some of the key things to know if you’re taking to the rivers for the first time. >>

Most river vessels have the capacity for less than 200 passengers, some carry much fewer, creating a friendly and intimate atmosphere on board. You will see the same smiling faces every day and begin to make friends with these like-minded people. Cosy spaces like the onboard library, lounges and bars provide the perfect place in which to catch-up about the day’s events, chat about river cruising in general or find out what else you have in common.
A Focus On Wellness
This same warmth and approachability are also offered by the dedicated crew, who are always on-hand to help with whatever you need. Whether that’s preparing your favourite drink at the bar, offering advice for your latest port of call
There has been a clear focus on wellness in the river cruising industry in the last few years, with cruise lines creating many different ways for guests to look after their minds and bodies whilst on board. Active excursions have become a key part

The way that rivers tend to dissect towns and cities means that arriving at a river cruise port provides effortless access to the heart of any destination. You’ll sail directly past iconic landmarks and dock just minutes away from the biggest sights and the most exciting activities. There’ll be no time wasted getting you from the ship to the shore and some vessels even have bicycles to help you get there even faster. Imagine looking up at Cologne’s dramatic cathedral as you make your way down the Rhine or snapping pictures of beautiful temples along the banks of the Mekong.

And if you’re thinking that sailing during the day is going to eat into your time exploring, you needn’t worry. The relatively short distances between river cruise ports mean that you’ll be at the next destination in no time and still get to relax and enjoy the views along the way.

During an ocean cruise, much of the sailing takes place overnight – allowing you to wake up in a new destination but miss out everything in between. Although there is some overnight sailing in river cruising, a lot of your travel time will take place during the daylight hours. This means that you get to enjoy the passing scenery and landscapes as well as the final destination – something that you’ll definitely be grateful for when gliding through regions like the Wachau Valley along the Danube and the rolling vineyards of the Douro.
or welcoming you back onto the ship with a cold towel, the crew-toguest ratio makes for a great level of service. The small number of guests on board also means that the staff will soon learn your name and your preferences. It’s those little things that make it such an enjoyable experience.

of the onshore programme, lighter options and dietary items have made their way onto menus, spa treatments are continuously expanding and fitness facilities are state-of-the-art. There are even specific itineraries that are themed on wellness, offering various activities and destinations that promote a healthy way of living. All this means that it is now easier than ever to relax and unwind during your river cruise. Of course, there is still the opportunity to indulge if you wish (you are on holiday, after all), but there is no need to worry about returning home full of lethargy and guilt.
Ships Of A Different Kind As mentioned above, river ships rarely exceed 200 passengers and so you can expect a much smaller vessel than those that sail the oceans. Three or four decks is the most you’ll find, but there is still plenty of space to move around, lie back in the sun or find a quiet corner for a while. The top deck is nearly always a sun deck, offering shaded and sunny areas to watch the scenery float by or do nothing with a book in hand. Not all ships have a swimming pool, but some at least offer a plunge pool in which you can take a quick dip to cool off. There’s typically a choice of two or three restaurants and many cruise lines give their guests the chance to dine al-fresco and make the most of the glorious weather. Cabins are spacious with everything you need to turn them into your own
home from home. New innovations have helped to make better use of the space and enhance your time on board. This includes panoramic windows that turn into balconies at the touch of the button, beds that face the window and cabins with twin balconies (French and full walk-out). And remember, every cabin on a river ship is an outside cabin, so you’ll always be able to enjoy the wonderful views.
More Inclusions If you’re thinking that you’ll need to pay for all the extras once you climb aboard, you’ll be pleased to hear of the many inclusions offered with this style of cruising. Accommodation and onboard meals are a given, but most operators also include free-flowing beverages at lunch and dinner (and sometimes inbetween). Selected excursions are usually included too, with the option to purchase alternatives, and you’ll occasionally find that gratuities come as part of your cruise fare as well. It all adds up to fantastic value for money.

Saga reveals ‘The Club, by Jools Holland’ Saga Cruises has announced a deal with music legend, Jools Holland, for him to become the face, and voice, of ‘The Club by Jools’ steakhouse and bar on the company’s spectacular new ship Spirit of Discovery. The partnership will bring Jools’ love of live music to this stunning venue, which has been inspired by the great cabaret lounges of the 50s. It will also see Jools Holland perform a number of live gigs aboard Spirit of Discovery during 2019.
A feast for the senses The Club by Jools is Spirit of Discovery’s steakhouse restaurant, where dining will rival London’s finest cabaret venues. Your customers can look forward to classic starters like Cornish Crab Cakes and Baked Four Onion Soup, with Grilled Half Lobster and Surf n Turf Fillet among the sumptuous mains. The Club will also serve classic steaks like filet and ribeye, along with more unusual ones like tomahawks. Much more than a restaurant, The Club by Jools is also one of Spirit of Discovery’s vibrant entertainment venues, where your customers will enjoy live music and cocktails in the evenings, with resident and guest musicians entertaining until late.
A new era of cruising Featuring design cues from some of the world’s most prestigious boutique hotels, Spirit of Discovery will be spacious, contemporary and packed with places to get active, relax and indulge. From the fully glazed Britannia Lounge to the inviting Living Room, the dramatic 400-seat Playhouse to the serene Spa, every detail has been designed to surprise and delight. Jools Holland says, “I’m delighted that Saga is dedicating a space on their new ship for live music, which is something that is very close my heart. There is nothing better than listening to live music in a small, intimate setting where you can really connect with the artists and their music. Food and music are two of my greatest passions and it’s great that Saga are combining the two”.
Every Spirit of Discovery cruise includes: • A chauffeur to the port up to 250 miles each way • All on-board gratuities • A full programme of live music, entertainment and talks • 24-hour room service
• Free Wi-Fi • Beers, wines and soft drinks included with lunch and dinner • Optional insurance or a discount if not required • Speciality dining at no extra charge
