We catch up with industry leaders
If you don’t find exactly what you are looking for within this magazine, or if you would like a tailor-made holiday or cruise created just for you, please get in touch with your local branch of Fred. Olsen Travel.
What can we expect To see from you in 2019? FM: Borneo features as a new destination for the very first time, as does a new Greek Island itinerary on board Star Flyer. There are also additional Panama Canal sailings, with new ports of call in Colombia. 2019 will also see the debut of our brand new addition to the fleet, SPV Flying Clipper, expected to make an appearance from summer onwards. Flying Clipper will be the world’s largest square rigger and the largest ship of its kind afloat. NS: Lots more amazing updates on Iona, including her dining venues as well as more news on our next XL class ship! Also look out for exciting news on some new brand partnerships! SW: 2019 is going to be a momentous year for MSC. For the first time ever, we will be launching our newest ship MSC Bellissima in the port of Southampton. She is the largest ship ever to be named in the UK and the port, the maiden voyage will be from
Cruising magazine INSIDE&BACK SHOPS NEW.indd 7-8
Southampton to the Mediterranean on March 4th post the celebrations. In addition we will be celebrating the launch of Ocean Cay, our own private island eco resort in the Bahamas in the Caribbean. In addition, we launch MSC Grandiosa in November, which will be the largest ship that MSC has ever launched. There will be exciting new features, including two brand new exclusive Cirque de Soleil at Sea shows created exclusively for MSC. We will have a record 11 ships in the Med for 2019. We will be increasing capacity in the Caribbean sailing from Barbados, Miami and Havana in Cuba. Plus Belllissima will be heading to homeport in Dubai for winter 19/20, the newest and largest ship ever to homeport in the Arab Gulf.
What would be your favourite place to visit by cruise ship and why? FM: Our Mediterranean itineraries are still by far my most favourite. I absolutely love visiting the smaller ports Star Clippers calls into, often untouched by the larger cruise ships. Corsica is a great example of this. I also love the Dalmatian coast for its history and dramatic coastline, and exceptionally calm waters. (Well most of the time) NS: Has to be the Fjords, which Iona will be showcasing in 2020. The scenery is just breathtaking! SW: I absolutely love cruising in the Med. I love the history of the area and love visiting ports such as Venice, Kotor, Dubrovnik. Kotor is a special favourite, it has a beautiful Medieval old town nestled at the end of these beautiful Mountains oozing in charm and history. There are some super local eateries and lovely local shopping and if you're feeling energetic you can hike up the old city walls which scale the mountain.
What is the biggest misconception people have with cruising? FM: Probably that ‘one size is expected to fit all’.. which couldn’t be further from the truth. There are so many choices when it comes to cruising these days, from small
boutique style vessels taking less than 50 passengers, right up to the super ships taking close to 7,000, each cruise line offering their own unique guest experience and inclusions. NS: That it's formal and structured. At P&O Cruises, you have the freedom to enjoy your holiday however you want, as we have something for everyone SW: There are so many misconceptions still surrounding cruise - it's too expensive, it's for old people, I will get seasick. All of which are now, fortunately, incorrect (perhaps excluding the seasickness if you're really unlucky). Cruising offers one of the very best-value holidays around when you compare what is included in your price. Unlimited dining, world class entertainment, amazing kids clubs - if you compare that to a beach holiday in a similar standard hotel, a cruise will almost always come out better value. As for it being for old people, MSC caters for all ages from the very young right through the ages.
FM: What do you love most about Fred. Olsen Travel? FM: I love the genuine passion and knowledge Fred. Olsen Travel has for all things cruising. The shared vision of putting the customer at the very heart of everything they do means they offer a totally unbiased customer centric service to all their clients. This is crucial when it comes to cruising, picking a travel agent who really has the customers interests at heart is as important as picking the right cruise line. NS: Fred. Olsen Travel brings first hand, expert experience of the cruise industry. SW: Fred. Olsen Travel offers their customers a really personal service. Their agents know the products they sell and in most cases, have personally experienced many of the brands and ships that they are selling. This personal service means they can truly recommend the right brand or the right ship for you. They are located nationally, so there should always be a local advisor close to your home. Will you be looking forward to a cruise with any of these cruise lines in 2019?

Cruise news Regent Seven Seas Cruises Announces Two Guest Experience Enhancements Sunset Dinner At The Pool Grill Luxury cruises traditionally serve guests gourmet cuisine and fine wines in award-winning dining rooms on board. However, Regent Seven Seas Cruises are also creating an alternative casual dinner experience that is more relaxed after a day of immersive shore excursions. The cruise line is now serving dinner at its pool grills on all four ships every evening. Despite the casual ambience, there is nothing simple about Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Pool Grill fare, which features delectable grilled-to-order steaks, chops and burgers, fresh seafood, sandwiches, and salads, with table-service. “Every guest has a slightly different definition of luxury,” says Regent Seven Seas Cruises President and CEO Jason Montague. “For some, the ability to relax and enjoy the finest cuisine in a casual setting, while watching the sunset from the pool deck of our ships and seeing the ocean waves go by, is luxurious. Our goal is to deliver a personalised experience to all our guests and serving dinner at the pool grill is one more step in delivering this customised guest experience.”
Shipboard Credit Can Now Be Used Prior To Departure Regent Seven Seas Cruises guests now have early access to use any new or existing Shipboard Credit. Beginning with voyages departing on or after 1 May 2019, guests may apply their available Shipboard Credits prior to boarding toward a variety of experiences like Regent Choice Shore Excursions, and Executive Collection Private Car Tours available fleet-wide or Culinary Arts Kitchen Classes aboard Seven Seas Splendor™ and Seven Seas Explorer®. Advance access to shipboard credit will help guests and their travel advisors more conveniently plan preferred activities prior to sailing, again leading to a more personalised experience.
Hurtigruten to power Princess reveals new cruise ships with dead fish features on latest ship Cutaways from fisheries and other organic waste will soon be used to power Hurtigruten’s fleet of green cruise ships. With a growing fleet of 17 ships, Hurtigruten is the world’s largest expedition cruise line. The company has invested heavily in green technology and such as battery solutions – and is considered the world’s greenest cruise company. The next step: Powering cruise ships with liquified biogas (LBG) – fossilfree, renewable gas produced from dead fish and other organic waste. "What other see as a problem, we see as a resource and a solution. By introducing biogas as fuel for cruise ships, Hurtigruten will be the first cruise company to power ships with fossile-free fuel," Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam says.
Princess Cruises has unveiled the first wave of new features onboard its newest ship, the 3,660-guest Enchanted Princess. The vessel will hold its naming ceremony in Southampton in late June 2020, before heading to the Mediterranean for summer 2020. Enchanted Princess will feature two new ‘Sky Suites’ centrally located on the top deck of the ship. The 270-degree panorama staterooms will provide a private vantage point of the ship’s Movies under the Stars screen and create a large space for entertaining. The suites can accommodate up to five guests, making them ideal for families. The ship will also include: • A redesigned ‘Salty Dog Gastropub’. • A redesigned Sabatini’s speciality restaurant, Princess Cruises’ onboard Italian Trattoria • An Art Deco design for The Princess Live TV studio and café, • A ‘Wakeview’ pool on its rear decks
After celebrating the 125-year anniversary by being the first cruise line to ban single-use plastic, 2019 will mark two green milestones for Hurtigruten: Introduction of the world’s first battery-hybrid powered cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen. Plus the start of a large-scale green upgrade project, replacing traditional diesel propulsion with battery packs and gas engines on several Hurtigruten ships.
• A newly-designed top-deck ‘Sanctuary’, Princess Cruises’ adults only relaxation area Tony Roberts, vice president Princess Cruises UK and Europe, said: "With the launch of Enchanted Princess in Southampton and our continued commitment to enhancing the range of features onboard our growing fleet of ships, this is an exciting time for Princess Cruises as we constantly strive to appeal to passengers looking for something new and exciting, both in terms of onboard offerings and destinations." Starboards and stripes With the number of options growing, the region of North America is definitely attracting more attention from UK cruisers. The chance to see some of the most famous and iconic cities in the world alongside some breathtaking nature is one that few people can pass up and, therefore, many are flying all the way across the pond in order to board a ship. Are you planning to explore North America from the decks of a cruise vessel? If so, here are some great options to consider.
Great Lakes, Victory Cruise Lines The five lakes that lie on the border between the USA and Canada can offer a wealth of different cruising itineraries that have something for everyone. Major cities like Chicago and Detroit, must-visit attractions like Niagara Falls and even military history in the form of Mackinac Island are all waiting to be discovered and Victory Cruise Lines offers the perfect way to do it. 6 Cruising Magazine Cruising Magazine Issue 1 2019 Working file.indd 6

New England One of the major highlights of a cruise through New England is the spectacular foliage that reveals itself around September and October every year. Warming reds, oranges, yellows and browns bathe the shore in colour, creating amazing photo opportunities and a memorable experience. Plus, this stretch of coastline on the east of North America will introduce you to palatial mansions owned by the upper classes, maritime history and some fantastic seafood.
Alaska There are many reasons to plan a cruise to the Last Frontier, not least the breathtaking wildlife that can be found everywhere you look. Eagles soar above your head, bears prowl the national parks and whales breach the
surface of the water right next to your ship. Plus, Alaska is a photographer’s dream. Glaciers, mountain ranges and rainforests all extend into the distance, creating a wild landscape that beckons the adventurer in you.
Mississippi River Cruises, American Cruise Lines With the introduction of new ships and cruise lines, Mississippi River cruises are becoming more and more popular every year. And it’s easy to see why. The chance to try Southern cuisine, learn about the American Civil War and listen to jazz music is one that shouldn’t be passed up. Most of the ships plying the Upper and Lower parts of the river are authentic paddle steamers, but American Cruise Lines has just launched a modern riverboat to provide a more contemporary option.
Hawaii Just like Alaska, Hawaii offers some breathtaking horizons to enjoy during your cruise. This time, it’s waterfalls and volcanoes that will make your jaw drop and provide adventurous hikes and thrill-seeking activities. Unlike Alaska, though, there are also beautiful beaches on which to relax as you either watch the surf roll in or ride it all the way to the shore. Finally, island life will introduce you to Polynesian culture which blends seamlessly with that of America in this Pacific paradise. If you would like to discover North America by sailing to any of the above regions, contact your cruise specialist today.

Northern Europe cruises, by Cunard Discover the lands of Tsars and Vikings, fjords and geysers – and even our own fair isles – on an intriguingly diverse selection of cruises around the continent’s northern shores. Scandinavia is a summer favourite, especially modern and dynamic Stockholm, while another Swedish port, Visby, reveals a well-preserved fortified medieval city. Copenhagen
is home to the magical Tivoli Gardens, St Petersburg is filled with magnificent palaces and cathedrals, and Estonia’s capital Tallinn has a beautifully preserved Old Town. Cunard also makes a maiden visit to other Baltic States in 2019 – Klaipeda in Lithuania, close to the Curonian Spit. They continue to explore Norway’s long and stunning coastline, including Haugesund’s Viking heritage, the art nouveau Opera House in Kristiansund, and the natural beauty of Narvik, which sparkles in the Midnight Sun inside the Arctic Circle. In 2019, Queen Elizabeth makes a first call in the Lofoten Islands, where the Northern lights may be seen. In 2018 and 2019 Cunard also visit Iceland, with debuts in Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides and Lerwick in the Shetlands.

Bergen Highlights Bergen is one of Norway’s most important ports and gateway to the fjords. The city is home to Bryggen, the historic wharf area and UNESCO World Heritage site. The seven mountains that surround Bergen are certainly worth exploring – the Fløibanen funicular and Ulriksbanen cable car are both excellent ways to enjoy spectacular panoramas of the surrounding countryside and water.
Reykjavik highlights Iceland’s capital means ‘smoky bay,’ a nod to the steam that rises from its geothermal natural attractions. The Blue Lagoon is one of the most famous, where you can bask in the warm sulphurous waters. The hissing Strokkur geyser and thundering Gullfoss Waterfall are also worth visiting.

The magic of the Med
From the glamour of its Riviera to its olive groves, and precarious hill-top towns, the Mediterranean offers rich pickings at every turn. History, beaches, art, cafe culture and sightseeing opportunities all vie for your attention ashore and it is this generosity of spirit that sums up the region's undeniable joie de vivre. P&O Cruises have a range of itineraries, featuring cruises from Southampton and Mediterranean fly cruises.
Sail to the enchanting Mediterranean for a slice of the good Soak up the delicious warmth of the springtime sun, as well as oodles of atmosphere and culture on this Mediterranean cruise. Join Azura in Southampton and enjoy two days at sea before Seville (tours from Cádiz), a symphony of all things Andalusian. Barcelona, next, is living proof you can have it all: a stunning beach-front, Gaudi architecture, plus a vibrant shopping, drinking and dining scene. An evening call gives you longer to stroll the cobbled lanes of the Gothic quarter. Villefranche is your next port of call, spilling down the lush hillside to the sandy town beach and picturesque bay. Then, Civitavecchia opens the door to the history, architecture and effortless style of Rome. Do as the Romans do and tuck into a wood fired pizza, with a full-bodied Lazio
wine. Following ancient Cartagena, your final call before Southampton is Gibraltar, for awesome dutyfree shopping, excellent beach life and Barbary ape-watching.
Serious sun and fun on board Oceana All the ingredients for the perfect family summer holiday await on this Mediterranean cruise - UNESCO World Heritage Sites, classic destinations, and hidden gems. Fly to Valletta to join Oceana, and settle in as you sail to Napoleon’s birthplace, Ajaccio, then the centuries old fishing village, Villefranche. With tours from Livorno, the Leaning Tower is just one of many towers in Pisa (though, admittedly, most are vertical and not so good for a selfie) while, in Florence, the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio await. Then, to Rome, to follow in the footsteps of the gladiators. Back to UNESCO listed Valletta, to fully experience what’s described as 'one of the most concentrated historic areas in the
world'. Next, Athens, where the iconic Acropolis gracefully dominates every sight-line. On Crete, Chania, charms with cobbled streets and colourful town-houses. The ancient wonders of Olympia, will enthral, before a visit to the stunning island of Santorini.

Clia UK & Ireland director and senior vice-president, Andy Harmer said about Celebrity Edge:
“The one thing that we would expect from the cruise industry is that every time there is a new ship launch or new class of ship launch, we notice the innovation and creativity and the design and the technology that goes into making it an evolution of the cruise experience. Celebrity Edge does exactly that. You have those hero parts of the ship that are incredibly impressive like the Magic Carpet, like the rooftop garden and like the theatre. What’s impressive about Celebrity Edge is that you also have incredible design applied consistently across the ship with an attention to detail. The ship really flows as you move from one area to another and the way you take in the views from each different part of the ship. They have been very clever bringing the sea to the guest onboard. The views that you have of the ocean around you as well as everything else that you have make it a very special experience wherever you are.”

The Cruise & Maritime experience From the beginning, Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) realised that many seasoned and first time British cruisers prefer a more traditional cruise experience as opposed to sailing on the vast mega resort style ships built today. Their fleet of six small to medium sized classic style ships offer a more leisurely and friendly ‘home from home’ style of cruising and maritime experience, whilst also being accessible to a much wider choice of interesting and more remote ports of call. Cruise and Maritime offer a more traditional and leisurely 'Country house' style of cruising experience aboard their classic-style cruise ships - Columbus, Magellan, Marco Polo, Astoria, Astor and Vasco da Gama where the emphasis is very much on providing attentive service within a friendly 'home from home’ atmosphere. Cruise and Maritime’s main aim has always been, and continues to be, to attain high levels of customer satisfaction by providing comfortable accommodation, delicious cuisine, stylish entertainment and attentive service. Striving to ensure that all

The world. within reach. A river cruise is one of the most relaxing ways to discover Europe – the UK’s leading river cruise provider, Riviera Travel, offers 14 superb itineraries with regional flights. Competitively priced, they include everything you’ll need for an unforgettable journey. Sail on elegant ships that are essentially five-star boutique hotels and wake each day to a new view from the comfort of a French balcony in your tastefully decorated suite. For centuries, Europe’s majestic rivers have carried travellers for many reasons – to explore, trade and sometimes, conquer. Steeped in history and culture, these aqueous arteries connect the continent’s greatest and most renowned destinations, bridging the past with the present, flowing through some of the world’s most stunning scenery. From picturesque countryside to historic landmarks, enjoy a different perspective on a variety
of destinations in style and luxury. On the delta of three major rivers – the Rhine, Maas and Scheldt – the Dutch waterways flow past traditional windmills, colourful bulbfields and the old Zuiderzee. The Seine, the main commercial waterway of Paris takes you around sweeping bends, past stunning chalk cliffs and through lush green countryside into the heart of picturesque Normandy. Flowing through the south of France, the river Rhône takes in the beautiful Provençal scenery, charming villages, and colourful fields of wild flowers. Enjoy the scenic wine regions in the south of France, from lush terraced vineyards and sun-baked hills, to dramatic rugged gorges and medieval towns.
Cruise along Europe’s most famous and cultured river, the Danube, flowing through and along 10 countries. Absorb the breathtaking views of Baroque architecture, medieval cities and sights that inspired Strauss and Mozart on the Upper Danube, while the Lower Danube takes us through the spectacular Iron Gates Gorge and the Danube Delta, home to numerous species of flora and fauna. Linking Spain and Portugal, the Douro weaves through one of the most photogenic river valleys and the sun-soaked Iberian countryside, past lovely hillside villages and vineyard terraces.
Steeped in myth, the famous Rhine has captivated writers and warriors alike, flowing past fairy-tale castles, medieval towns and lush vineyards. Take in some of the most breathtaking views, such as the spectacular Rhine Gorge, the beautiful Black Forest and one of the oldest cities in Germany, famous for its Roman amphitheatre.

Your days are spent however you like. You can relax on the sun deck or catch up with fellow travellers in the ship’s stylish bar, but there’s always something exciting to explore at each port. Shore excursions are included and accompanied by local, Englishspeaking guides, adept at bringing to life the places you visit. What’s more, every meal on board is a gastronomic affair. The menus feature Europe’s many delicious cuisines alongside international classics. Coffee and tea are available all day on the ship, while water in your cabin is replenished daily – all complimentary, of course.
As you’d expect, the service on board is impeccable, delivered ever so subtly by a charming crew who represent the best of European hospitality. With an excellent ratio of crew to passengers, you will often find that your server remembers how you prefer your eggs at breakfast, or your bartender knows just how you like your drink. Every cruise also comes with the services of an experienced tour manager or cruise director, dedicated to ensuring everything is to your satisfaction. Plus, the Riviera Travel Price Promise guarantees there are no hidden fees, no discretionary charges and no inflated prices or artificial discounts.

Explore the Amalfi Coast
Chances are you’ll already be familiar with what the Amalfi Coast has to offer, even if you have never been here before. These colourful towns and villages that cling to cliff-tops close to the Bay of Naples appear in photos everywhere from travel programmes to social media. However, to see them without being filtered through a lens is to truly appreciate their beauty. Usually reached via bus from Sorrento (which isn’t strictly part of the Amalfi Coast but still well worth a visit), these eye-catching destinations are home to sloped shopping passages, fine dining restaurants and beaches nestled perfectly within rocky coves. The popular ‘Path of the Gods’ hiking route takes you through a few of the most alluring towns, providing adventurers with breathtaking views of the coastline every step of the way.
Highlights • Positano – The jewel in the Amalfi Coast’s crown. Take in the views from the road level and then descend upon the golden sands. • Grotta dello Smeraldo – Find this cave complex close to Amalfi. You’ll travel down in a lift and explore the grotto in a rowing boat. • Amalfi Cathedral – Climb to the top of the grand staircase and enter through the bronze doors to catch a glimpse of the relics of St. Andrew. • Atrani – For an insight into the Amalfi Coast without the crowds, head to this gem around the headland from Amalfi. • Gardens of Ravello – Set back from the coast, Ravello is home to beautiful villas that boast vivid gardens open to the public.

Five-Star Fjords With P&O insider, Chris Mayhew
Where to start when talking about the Norwegian fjords? I was lucky enough to be chosen as a P&O Cruises Iona Insider and was whisked off to Ålesund and the surrounding area for a few days in October. The aim was for us was to experience some of the exciting shore excursions that the ship will be offering in 2020 and to see these spectacular landscapes up close with our own eyes. From the moment we arrived, I could already tell that this part of the world is an ideal place for Iona to make her debut, especially with the focus on natural light and glass that will bring the outside in. Visits to Geiranger and Olden showed us the famed backdrops of highsided valleys filled with calm waters and we had the added
IONA Cruising Magazine Issue 1 2019 Working file.indd 33
benefit of seeing them speckled with the magnificent colours of autumn. As for the activities that we got the chance to try, I can say that anyone sailing on board Iona during her maiden season is in for a treat. Kayaking in Olden was a definite highlight and wasn’t as difficult to master as I first thought. This environment is perfect for first timers who want to give it a go as there are no currents to deal with. Another memorable experience was our trip up to the Briksdal Glacier. The path that led us there twisted through beautiful forest and past raging waterfalls, providing plenty to see in every direction. Then, as the glacier came into view, we were greeted by a glistening blue icy mass that left us all lost for words. Other activities included the Loen Skylift, one of the steepest cable cars in Europe; a roaring rib ride that left us hanging on for dear life; and a fishing excursion that involved us catching our own crayfish lunch. Having had a taster of the breathtaking Norwegian fjords, it is definitely somewhere that I would love to return to. Luckily, I will be sailing on board Iona during the summer of 2020. Will you be joining me?

Northern lights promise Hurtigruten gives you the opportunity to travel with meaning. Building on their explorer heritage dating back to 1893, they offer unique nature-based experiences on intimately-scaled expedition ships. Travelling in Norway during the winter months gives you the opportunity to see one of nature’s best light shows, the Northern Lights. The route that Hurtigruten sails in northern Norway is directly beneath the Auroral Zone and of the 34 ports we visit from Bergen
to Kirkenes, 22 are north of the Arctic Circle, putting you in pole position and giving you plenty of opportunity to see the Northern Lights. And if that wasn’t enough Hurtigruten can also offer you their Northern Lights Promise. Welcome to boutique, luxury cruising
2019 signals a new beginning for Saga Cruises, with the launch of Spirit of Discovery, their first purpose-built ship. Of course you’re familiar with the concept of boutique hotels. But next year, Saga are taking it to a new level, by applying it to cruising. That’s what you can look forward to when stepping aboard their new flagship Spirit of Discovery. All the comfort, luxury, fine cuisine and high levels of service you’d expect in a boutique hotel, except here you’ll wake up in a different destination to the one you went to sleep in. Taking to the oceans in Summer 2019, Spirit of Discovery is the only small ship being built for the British market, offering a balcony for every guest and a choice of free speciality restaurants. All backed by Saga’s famous personal service and inclusive value. Fine dining has long been an integral part of every Saga cruise, and this is continuing aboard their new ship. Guests can look forward to widest-
ever selection of restaurants at sea, led by an expert team of Executive Chefs. Plus, all speciality restaurants are completely free of charge Spirit of Adventure, sister ship to Spirit of Discovery, will take to the oceans a year later in August 2020. Sharing the same high levels of boutique luxury but with her own distinct character, she will introduce a second wave of luxury cruising to Saga’s distinctive new portfolio. Whichever ship you choose, Saga always stands out for its unbeatable value for money. Once the fare has been paid, there is very little to budget for, they really do include so much more in the price. In fact, every cruise can begin with a chauffeur service from home to the port. It’s not an added extra, but included as standard for everyone, up to 250 miles each way. On board, all meals are included, even dining in all the speciality restaurants. A choice of complimentary wines are
served at lunch and dinner, while snacks, afternoon tea and 24-hour room service are also included, so is free Wi-Fi throughout the cruise. Saga's 2020 season is All Inclusive.
