Christmas Markets & Winter Breaks Ludwigsburg
Every year, Christmas markets attract more and more people to savour their unique festive charm. Originating in Germany they are now a feature in many European countries. It’s a wonderful experience for all ages, a chance to indulge in the good old-fashioned Christmas spirit! Characterised by their distinctive settings and regional traditions, each market provides a special atmosphere. The twinkling scenes of festively decorated squares with their enchanting market stalls and glittering Christmas trees set against the backdrop of beautiful historic buildings, let visitors relive the magic of yesteryear. The aromas of roasted chestnuts, grilled sausages, mulled wine and delicious biscuits, fill the crisp air and help to create that very special yuletide ambience.
Traditional German Christmas Markets The first day of advent is traditionally the day when Germany’s Christmas markets open with an infectious festive atmosphere. The landscape is filled with wooden stalls offering unique hand carved Christmas gifts and special seasonal treats such as baked apples, sugared almonds, marzipan shapes and hot, spicy mulled wine. Most people know the famous markets of Cologne, Nuremberg and Munich, which are some of Germany’s oldest and best known Christmas markets. There are many other beautiful German markets and we offer a wide range of regional markets as a more intimate alternative. Rothenburg ob der Tauber offers a beautiful setting for the market set in a walled medieval city and surrounded by buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. If you can’t make the markets then you can always visit the German Christmas Museum or the world famous ‘Käthe Wohlfahrt’ Christmas store, which both offer festive magic throughout the year.

Ludwigsburg is set in a beautiful baroque market square and is festively decorated with majestic angels made from thousands of tiny light bulbs. Lübeck is the home of marzipan and offers tales of the brothers Grimm.

Charming European Destinations We offer an extensive range of European destinations that are now well established in the Christmas market calendar. Vienna’s Christmas markets are situated in stunning locations, for example the famous Imperial residence Schönbrunn Palace makes a magnificent backdrop. Cologne is not only the fourth largest city in Germany but also offers a wealth of cultural activities and numerous major events. The lovable metropolis on the Rhine is well-known for its cultural sights; such as the world famous gothic cathedral or its many museums. The big shopping streets “Hohe Straße” and “Schildergasse” offer something for every taste. And let’s not forget the excellent and exciting nightlife – among Germany’s major cities, Cologne has the highest density of pubs and taverns. Over 3000 bars, cafes and restaurants invite visitors to enjoy a cold Kölsch beer. The Cologne way of life is highly infectious – and that’s reason enough to pay it a visit!

Northern Bavaria’s historic gem boasts a unique mixture of traditional and modern culture and is believed to be one of Germany’s most romantic cities. The city is famous for its Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt square in the Old Town with the medieval charm and aroma of gingerbread, Nuremberg Bratwurst and mulled wine. But there is much more to the city than this. The medieval Old Town is encircled by an ancient city wall and overlooked by the towering Kaiserburg Castle. A large part of its thousand years of history can be seen and experienced. Gothic churches, splendid patricians’ houses, historic sights and some of Germany’s most important museums are situated throughout the town. Würzburg – world heritage, world-class wine and well-being. This lively university city on the river Main is known as the ‘Gateway to the Romantic Road’. The skyline is dominated by its most prominent landmark, the Marienberg Fortress. Another spectacular highlight is the Baroque Residenz Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982. Various museums, galleries and theatres will delight art lovers. The city is the centre of the Franconian Wine Country, a region whose vineyards are famous throughout the world. Places To See Duke Eberhard Ludwig is often quoted as saying “there are already more than enough boring towns”. It was this point of view that inspired him to build Ludwigsburg. The magnificient centrepoint is the Residential Palace. Next to it, and just as imposing, are the hunting lodge and summer residence. The large gardens surrounding the residential palace are home to the garden show Blooming Baroque and the Fairy Tale Garden. In the centre of the town see the baroque living quarters and the birth houses of famous poets, or sample the many local dishes.
25 November – 22 December 2014
A golden glow hangs over the arcade-lined marketplace and the lovingly decorated stalls of the Christmas Market. Gleaming strings of thousands of tiny lights stretch over the roofs of the stalls; graceful angels spread their great, glimmering wings, and both baroque churches shine in festive splendour. Every Saturday, King Friedrich the First strides through the market with his royal suite, holds audience in his splendid robe, and surveys over 175 stalls. Hand puppets and figures from the nativity, antique and modern Christmas tree ornaments, precious objects of paper and ceramic, warm things of wool and fine silk garments: no Christmas wish goes unfulfilled. Chestnuts, waffles and other delicacies indulge your palate. Swabian specialties such as Schupfnudeln and Holzofendinnede will warm you from the inside out.

Ludwigsburg Palace: An impressive Baroque Palace with 452 rooms spread over 28 buildings. The beautiful gardens around the palace make the trip to Ludwigsburg unforgettable (not open all year round).

Torhäuser: The six historical gate buildings of the city belonged to the city wall built between 1758 and 1760 under duke Carl Eugen and formed the exits of the city. After an extensive redevelopment the gate buildings now serve as museums, archives and showrooms.

Napoleonic era. The murals inside the palace, as well as the 72 hectare wildlife park around the palace are well worth a look. Today the palace is not only opened for visitors, but is also the backdrop for a popular TV talk show entitled “Nachtcafé”.
Things To Do
•
The picturesque town is one of the few planned cities of the 18th century that still exist in Germany. Created on the drawing-board, the town was built according to the absolute will of Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg. Up to the 19th century the dominance of the Court not only characterised the architecture but also the culture of the town. Now free from the courtly constraints the culture and the museums of the town are characterised by experimental art, multimedia shows and modern exhibitions.

Dresden is probably the most romantic city in Germany, especially during Advent, when the streets and squares of the historic old town are transformed into a sparkling Christmas decor. The heart of this magical place is the Striezelmarkt, one of the largest German Christmas markets. It is also the oldest, having been established in 1434. This market boasts the world´s largest Erzgebirge wooden pyramid and a candle arch you can actually walk across. For a few glorious hours, just go with the flow and immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit. If you like Christmas, you’ll love Dresden. A grand total of eleven completely different Christmas markets makes for wonderfully conflicting decisions. Each of them with their own intimate flair, such as the charming medieval market in the stable yards at Residenzschloss or the famous Frauenkirche.

Welcome to Leipzig. Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Goethe or Schiller – the names of innumerable great personalities are closely linked with Leipzig. Thousands of music lovers travel to the city every year in order to walk in the footsteps of famous composers. Yet Leipzig has even more to offer: a multifaceted cultural life, diverse museums and galleries, a high density of pubs and history at every turn. This city, rich in tradition, can boast a long history of 1,000 years during which time much has taken place, including the Peaceful Revolution in the autumn of 1989 - an important milestone on the way to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification.
Things To Do • The Leipzig Gewandhaus concert hall with its world famous orchestra has been a symbol of the city for over 350 years. The Gewandhaus orchestra also performs at the Opera House, and in St. Thomas Church with the St. Thomas Boys Choir. •

post as Leipzig’s director of music. The church became famous due to the prayers for peace that took place here every Monday since 1982, and which were the starting point for the Peaceful Revolution of 1989. The church is a symbol of the German Reunification.

28 November – 23 December 2014 The smell of ‘White’ mulled wine and roasted almonds, the illumination by thousands of fairy lights and the festive music provided by local brass-bands. Once a year, the medieval town of Rothenburg transforms itself into a winter wonderland. There is a great deal to see and do in Rothenburg, the narrow and winding streets and the squares around the town hall; its archways and the marketplace which are lined with stalls where one can find everything the heart and taste buds desire; old German Christmas pastries and handcrafted treasures of all shapes and sizes. The Rothenburg ‘Reiterlesmarkt’ can look back on a 500-year tradition, during which time it has thankfully altered very little from its historical origins.

Baden-Baden
Bremen
A traditional German Christmas Market is a vibrant experience full of Christmas smells, twinkling lights, brightly coloured stalls and many local delicacies to taste and drink. There are a number of markets which are well worth a visit, some off the beaten track and others easily reached from the UK.
Aachen
Baden-Baden
Bremen
Cochem
Aachen’s illuminated Christmas market is set around the city’s famous cathedral and the Town Hall. With its lovingly decorated stalls, the ‘Christmas Village’ on the main market square leaves nothing to be desired for Christmas shoppers.
The Christmas market enchants its guests with its pre-Christmas spirit. More than 100 romantic stalls are surrounded by the aromas of roasted almonds and gingerbread as well as the traditional hot mulled wine. Listen to a variety of choirs, orchestras and bands performing daily on the stage in front of the illuminated Kurhaus.
Experience the magic of ‘Schlachtezauber’, the Christmas attraction which has an enchanting maritime feel thanks to its location on the city’s favourite waterfront. The embankment of the river Weser. Or enjoy the historic Christmas Market in Bremen. Seasonal Christmas Bazaars are held in the lower hall of the Town Hall (Rathaus) and in Böttcherstrasse. Winter concerts bring a heart- warming atmosphere to the historical townscape.
Set against the backdrop of halftimbered houses, the festively decorated wooden stalls offer Christmas delights for visitors. This small market oozes charm and is famous for its gluhwein which is usually made from locally-produced wines. It is ideally located for a visit to the Trier and Koblenz Christmas Markets as well.

Cosmopolitan Düsseldorf combines a wide range of cultural offerings, a vibrant nightlife and excellent shopping facilities. There are more than 260 bars and restaurants but the city also has an international reputation as a centre for art and culture with its Old Town and numerous theatres and galleries. Set on the banks of the Rhine, the city offers a mix of contemporary and historic splendour. Discover a city that cherishes tradition yet relishes innovation.
Eisenach has its own traditional market set in the town square and is well worth a visit on its own. The main attraction however, is the market held on the first three advent weekends at the stunning setting of Wartburg Castle. A maze of stalls set in an 11th century castle with an unusual array of Christmas goods. The visit to the Castle involves a very hilly walk.
Erfurt has one of the bestpreserved medieval old quarters in Germany with a delightful blend of wealthy patrician townhouses and carefully restored half-timbered buildings. The Christmas market is situated in the heart of the Cathedral Square with the Cathedral setting an imposing and impressive backdrop to the colourful stalls and big wheel.
Freiburg is located on the edge of the Black Forest, in southwest Germany. Freiburg’s townscape is dominated by its magnificent Münster Cathedral on the bustling market square. As you stroll through the town, be sure to look down at the pavement for the cheerful mosaics and be careful not to step into the little rivers running parallel to many footpaths. A dynamic cultural scene and an excellent range of restaurants and bars add even more to the charm of this beautiful city.

Lübeck
Hanover’s Christmas market is a traditional experience with 150 festive stands selling handicrafts, clustered around the old town hall. There are many special surprises in store as you wander through the Christmas market, such as a historic Christmas village depicting humble medieval life or the Finnish Christmas market at Ballhofplatz. A unique experience is the Winterzoo event at Hanover Adventure Zoo.
Heidelberg is universally recognised as a town of rich history and scenic beauty. The highlight is Heidelberg Castle which towers over the town. It was originally a well-fortified Gothic castle and is now in ruins. The ‘Philosophers Way’ allows spectacular views of the Old Town and the Castle. The Student Jail offers an insight into discipline for the students at the famous University and their graffiti is still on the walls. The Old City is full of picturesque lanes, squares and medieval churches.
In the Advent season, Koblenz Town Hall is turned into a huge Advent calendar. Every day a new little door opens while choirs and music societies bring music to the old part of the city. The best way to marvel at the festive Christmas lights is to take a ride in the nostalgic stage coach. The latest highlight is the winter forum on the refurbished Zentralplatz, right in front of the new Romanticum, where ice-skating enthusiasts in particular will have a great time!
Lübeck’s Christmas Market is situated amidst the stunning scenery of its historic old town. There are over 400 stall holders offering a range of goods set amongst over 500 fir trees. The Fairytale Market is where you can learn about the stories of the Brothers Grimm and don’t miss out on the Christmas bazaar in the world-famous Niederegger Marzipan factory.

The historic market square in Mainz is a blaze of lights. The air is scented with a Christmassy mixture of roast almonds, gingerbread, hot chestnuts and mulled wine. Handicrafts, from festive stars made of straw to delicate ornaments and Christmas tree baubles in modern designs, have dominated the Nikolose Market in Mainz for more than 220 years. At the foot of St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz everything is on offer for visitors with a passion for Christmas. A special highlight is the 11-metre high wooden pyramid from which celebrities from Mainz smile down at the hustle and bustle on the market. Your gaze will inevitably move upwards to the sky, where a gigantic sea of lights brightens up the square - guaranteed to give you goosebumps!
In Speyer things don’t come to an end at Christmas - the Christmas and New Year market invites visitors to get together in a cosy atmosphere right into the New Year. Palatinate specialities such as yeast dumplings and potato soup (Grumbeersupp) as well as the finest wines from the region treat your palate, and children can have a great time in the Christmas bakery or use the heaven telephone to send their wishes to Father Christmas. This beautifully arranged Christmas market is the perfect destination for the whole family with many activities on offer. “Altpörtel in flames” is a must - here a spectacular stage is set at the historical gate with lights, music and fireworks.
Even though the history of this Christmas market doesn’t quite go back to the Roman town’s origins in 16BC, it still has plenty of tradition! 95 festively decorated wooden stalls invite visitors to take a stroll around the market, marvel at what it has to offer and linger a while. The market has the impressive backdrop of the medieval ‘Hauptmarkt’ square and the striking cathedral. The German Mulled Wine Queen will pour out mulled wine produced by regional winemakers. Children will delight in an exciting puppet show.
The seasonal sounds of Christmas trumpeters ring out from the city’s charming medieval churches. The Christmas market has more than thirty lovely stalls as well as a ‘living Nativity scene’. The ‘living’ manger in the centre of Worms Christmas Market invites children to stroke the animals and gives visitors an idea of how the Holy Family must have felt during their cold night in the stable. A large, open ice landscape covering around 450m² at the market place attracts skilled ice skaters and those who are brave enough to try. And to warm visitors up there’s mulled wine and hot waffles, or a visit to St. Nicholas. And on Fridays a Christmas goose waits for its lucky winner.

•
Is my holiday safe and covered?
Fred.\ is ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number is 0944. Fred.\ is also a member of the ABTA Travel Association, which means assurance, choice, value, and high levels of service.
•
Who do I contact for general enquiries about my booking?
For general enquiries, including seating, baggage and meal requests, cancellations and amendment queries, please email holidays@fred.travel, clearly stating your booking reference, name and your date of departure in the subject line or call us on 0808 159 5256.
•
When will I get my documentation?
Tickets will be sent approximately 10 days prior to departure by either email or post. If you have not received your documentation 7 days prior to travel, please e-mail holidays@fred.travel clearly stating your booking reference, name and date of departure in the subject line.
•
What is the baggage allowance for my flight?
Your allowance will usually be shown on your e-ticket or/and your itinerary. If you are unsure about baggage allowance please email us on holidays@fred.travel, clearly stating your booking reference, name and your date of departure in the subject line or call us. Please note some airlines do not include any free baggage allowance and may charge for hold baggage at check-in (this usually applies to low cost carriers).
•
What happens if there is a schedule change?
If an airline advises Fred.\ of a schedule change we will notify you of any changes over 1 hour. Depending on your chosen method of communication this will be either by e-mail, post or phone.
•
Does my flight baggage allowance include hand luggage?
For changes between 1-4 hours we will send you a new confirmation showing the new flight details. For changes between 4-8 hours we will send you a new confirmation showing the new flight details and will request that you contact us within 14 days of notification if you require further assistance. If we do not hear from you within 14 days we will consider this as an acceptance and any further changes will be classed as a voluntary amendment and charges will apply. For changes over 8 hours we will send you a new confirmation showing the new flight details and will require you to contact us to discuss further details. We will not re-confirm your ticket until you have instructed us to do so.
No it doesn’t. Always check the exact hand luggage allowance with your airline prior to packing. A general guide is that hand luggage should not exceed height 450mm x width 350mm x depth 200mm. Most airlines have a hand luggage measurement gauge at check in. If you are taking hand luggage please remember that rules regarding liquids remain in place. Liquids, gels and cosmetics exceeding 100ml are not permitted in hand luggage, and smaller containers must be taken in a transparent plastic bag.
•
Can I make rail reservations?
We would normally reserve you a seat as requested. The majority of rail tickets can be used on any train on that route (not Thalys/ Eurostar). Please contact us if you require any further details.
If you wish to accept a schedule change you can do so by e-mailing us at holidays@fred.travel.
•
Tickets
•
Vouchers
Most tickets are electronic (e-tickets) with the exception of rail tickets with data being stored electronically on suppliers’ systems. You may access your flight booking online by logging into the airlines website. You will be able to retrieve your booking by entering the airline reference number (alphanumeric and six digits), which is shown on your ticket and the lead passenger name.
Please note all documentation should be taken with you on your trip. Although some suppliers do not require the voucher to be presented on arrival, the majority will require this as form of payment. For customers with pre-arranged tours or transfers it is advisable that you reconfirm pick-up/drop-off times with the supplier locally.
Please reconfirm onward flights with the airline locally to ensure that your departure times are correct. Airlines may from time to time change their flight schedule and it may not be possible to advise you once you have departed the UK.
•
Credit Cards
Please note that credit card use is not as widespread in Europe as it is in the UK. We would advise you to check in hotels, restaurants and shops that your credit card can be used (useful phrase: ‘Kann ich hier mit Kreditkarte bezahlen? – do you accept credit cards?).
•
How do I cancel my booking?
We require all cancellations in writing by e-mail or post. Please check our booking terms and conditions for cancellation charges, but please note that it will not generally be possible to cancel your holiday without losing a percentage of your holiday (see our Terms and Conditions). We therefore strongly recommend you take out suitable insurance to cover you for possible eventualities that would require you to cancel your holiday.
•
Are there different styles of beds in Germany, Austria and Switzerland?
Yes there are. Twin-bedded rooms may consist of two mattresses and one frame or two separate beds. The majority of twin rooms are usually two mattresses and one bedhead. We are always more than happy to request separate beds however won’t be able to guarantee any requests. Single rooms may not always offer the same facilities as twin rooms. Double rooms are standard-sized rooms with one king-or queen sized mattress and one frame.
•
Can I change my flight booking?
• Are there any extra charges for hotels?
Most flight tickets are not refundable or changeable. If your flight ticket states ‘non-refundable’, you may still be able to make a change subject to the airlines terms and conditions. If your flight states “nonchangeable and non-refundable”, then it will not be possible to make any changes to your flight booking.
•
Can I pre-book my seats on my flights?
Many flights offer a chance to pre-book seats before departure. This can be done by selecting the ‘onlinecheck in’ option on airlines’ homepages and is usually available within 23 hours of the flight departure. Low cost carriers offer a chance to utilise ‘Priority boarding’ for a fee. We can book this for you but usually charge a handling fee for the service. We, unlike many websites, always try to book one item of hold baggage per person for each section of the flight.

Your Questions Answered
Your confirmation invoice will list your hotel booking and its components. Some towns require the payment of a local Kurtaxe usually around 2 Euros per person per day. We will make every effort to advise you of this at the time booking. Some cities are introducing a local culture tax. Berlin introduced one on the 01 January 2014 which needs to be paid locally.

Booking and Paying For Your Arrangements A booking is made with Fred.\ when a) you tell us that you would like to accept our written or verbal quotation and b) you pay us a deposit of £150 per person unless advised differently at the time of booking. For river cruises and airline bookings you will be advised of the deposit amount at the time of booking. When we issue you with a confirmation invoice, a binding contract will come into existence. Upon receipt, if you believe that any details on the confirmation or any other documents are wrong you must advise us immediately as changes may not be possible later. The balance of the cost of your arrangements (including any applicable surcharge) is due 8 weeks prior to scheduled departure on some products we require payment 10 weeks prior. If we do not receive this balance in full and on time, we reserve the right to treat your booking as cancelled by you in which case the cancellation charges set out below will become payable. All credit card bookings will be subject to a 2% handling fee (American Express 2.5%). Your Financial Protection All the package and Flight-Plus holidays we sell come with protection for your money. If you buy a single travel service then this might not apply. Package holidays are protected by the package organiser and we will provide you with their confirmation. Our Flight-Plus holidays are ATOL-protected (our ATOL number is 0944). A Flight-Plus is where you purchase through us, at the same time or within a day of each other, a flight plus overseas accommodation and/or car hire from separate suppliers (i.e. not a package holiday). When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight inclusive holiday from us you will receive an ATOL Certificate. This lists what is financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you and who to contact if things go wrong. On all Flight Plus holiday arrangements, your money is ATOL protected meaning that you will be able to continue with your holiday or receive a refund of the amount paid to us in the unlikely event of our insolvency or the insolvency of your service providers. Please note however that we have no liability beyond that for insolvency as set out in the ATOL scheme, because we act as agent of the suppliers. In respect of our Flight-Plus holidays, we are obliged to tell you: • •
We or the suppliers of the services you have bought will provide you with the services you have bought (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with the services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances, the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or other wise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable). You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme.
We provide full financial protection for our package holidays that do not include a flight and accommodation only bookings , by way of a bond held by ABTA The Travel Association. Pricing We reserve the right to amend the price of unsold holidays at any time and correct errors in the prices of confirmed holidays within 7 days of the booking. The price of your holiday is subject at all times to changes in transport costs such as fuel, scheduled airfares and any other airline cost changes which are part of our contracts with airlines (and their agents), cruise ship operators and any other transport provider; to cost changes arising from government action such as changes in VAT or any other government imposed changes; and to changes in currency exchange rates and to dues, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airports any or all of which may result in a variation of your holiday price.
50
For changes to pricing after booking, we will absorb and you will not be charged for any increase equivalent to 2% of the price of your travel arrangements, which excludes insurance premiums and any amendment charges and/or additional services or travel arrangements. You will be charged for the amount over and above that, plus an administration charge of £1.00 per person together with an amount to cover agents’ commission. If this means that you have to pay an increase of more than 10% of the price of your travel arrangements (excluding any amendment charges and/or additional services or travel arrangements), you will have the option of accepting a change to another holiday if we are able to offer one (if this is of equivalent or higher quality you will not have to pay more but if it is of lower quality you will be refunded the difference in price), or cancelling and receiving a full refund of all monies paid to us, any amendment charges and/or additional services or travel arrangements. Should you decide to cancel for this reason, you must exercise your right to do so within 14 days from the issue date printed on your final invoice. There will be no change made to the price of your holiday within 30 days of your departure. Should the price of your holiday go down due to the changes mentioned above, by more than 2% of your holiday cost, then any refund due will be paid to you. However, please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes have no impact on the price of your travel due to contractual and other protection in place. Travel Insurance We reserve the right to refuse or cancel a booking if you do not have personal travel insurance. We will treat any cancellation for this reason as a cancellation by you and the cancellation charges will be payable as set out below. Please read your policy details carefully and take them with you on holiday. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance you purchase is adequate and appropriate for your particular needs. We reserve the right to request full details of your insurance policy however please note that we do not check insurance policies for suitability. You are responsible for indemnifying us in full in the event that we incur any losses or expenses arising out of your failure to take out adequate insurance cover. You are strongly advised to take out insurance which will cover any damage. :Cancellation by You If you or any other member of your party decides to cancel your confirmed booking you must notify us in writing. Your notice of cancellation will only take effect when it is received in writing by us at our offices at Fred.\. Please note proof of postage (whether Royal Mail or e-mail) is not proof of receipt. You will be responsible for applicable cancellation charges up to the maximum shown below, unless otherwise advised. The cancellation charge detailed is calculated on the basis of the total cost payable by the person(s) cancelling excluding amendment charges which are not refundable in the event of the person(s) to whom they apply cancelling. : For River Cruises:
70 days or more 69 - 43 days
deposit only 40%
For all other holidays: 56 days or more deposit only 55 - 43 days 40% For all holidays: 42 - 29 days 60% 28 - 08 days 80% 07 - 00 days 100% If the deposit amount is more than the cancellation amount we will retain the full deposit as the cancellation charge. We therefore strongly recommend you take out suitable insurance to cover you for possible eventualities that would require you to cancel your holiday. Changes by You If you wish to change any part of your booking you must inform us in writing. Whilst we will do our best to assist, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet your requested change. All changes will be subject to any applicable rate changes or extra costs incurred as well as any costs incurred by ourselves and any costs or charges incurred or imposed by any of our suppliers. You should be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible. Where we are unable to assist you and you do not wish to proceed with the original booking we will treat this as a cancellation by you. A cancellation fee may be payable. Please note that is important at the time of booking to advise the names of travellers that match the name given on their passport. Failure to do so will usually result in a name change charge by the airline. Accuracy We endeavour to ensure that all the information and prices both on our website and in our brochures are accurate; however occasionally changes and errors occur and we reserve the right to correct prices and other details in such circumstances. You must check the current price and all other details relating to the arrangements that you wish to book before your booking is confirmed. Changes or cancellations by us As we plan your holiday arrangements many months in advance we may occasionally have to make changes or cancel your booking and we reserve the right to do so at any time. If we make a major change to your holiday, we will inform you or your travel agent as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of either accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value), or cancelling your holiday and receiving a full refund of all monies paid. In some cases we will also pay compensation (see on next page). These options don’t apply for minor changes. Examples of minor changes include alteration of youroutward/return flights by less than 12 hours, changes to aircraft type, change of accommodation to another of the same or higher standard, changes of carriers. Please note that carriers such as airlines used in the brochure may be subject to change.

It is a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on you for costs. The upper limit on claims is £5,000 per person and £25,000 per booking form. The scheme doesn’t apply to claims which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. It can however deal with claims which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,500 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. Your request for arbitration must be received by ABTA within eighteen months of the date of return from holiday. For injury and illness claims, you can request the ABTA Mediation Procedure and we have the option to agree to mediation. Further information on the Code and ABTA’s assistance in resolving disputes can be found on www.abta.com.
Refunds Any amounts due to you will be paid upon request within 28 days.
Single Components If you have purchased a ‘single component’ i.e. Accommodation or transportation only, we will accept responsibility only for our own negligence e.g. If we have negligently mis-described the accommodation etc, or if we have been negligent in our choice of supplier. We will not be responsible for the negligence of our suppliers, their employees, servants or agents.
Passport, Visa and Immigration Requirements and Health Formalities It is your responsibility to check and fulfil the passport, visa, health and immigration requirements applicable to your itinerary. You must check requirements for your own specific circumstances with the relevant Embassies and/or Consulates and your own doctor as applicable. Most countries now require passports to be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. If your passport is in its final year, you should check with the Embassy of the country you are visiting. For further information please contact the Passport Office on 0870 5210410 or visit www.passport.gov.uk. Special conditions apply for travel to the USA and all passengers must have individual machine readable passports. Please check www.usembassy.org.uk. For European holidays you should obtain a completed and issued form EHIC prior to departure. Up to date travel advice can be obtained from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, visit www.fco.gov.uk. We do not accept any responsibility if you cannot travel because you have not complied with any passport, visa or immigration requirements.
Package Holidays Subject to these booking conditions, your holiday arrangements will be made or performed using reasonable skill and care. We will be responsible if our employees, servants or agents fail to make or perform your holiday arrangements using reasonable skill and care as long as they were acting within the course of their employment or carrying out work which we had asked them to do.
Disabilities and Medical Problems We are not a specialist disabled holiday company, but we will do our utmost to cater for any special requirements you may have. If you or any member of your party has any medical problem or disability which may affect your stay, please provide us with full details by writing or emailing us, before we confirm your booking so that we can advise as to the suitability of your chosen arrangements if possible. Excursions Excursions or other tours that you may choose to book or pay for whilst you are on holiday are not part of your package holiday provided by us.
We will not be responsible or pay compensation for any injury, illness, death, loss, damage, expense, cost or other claim of any description which results from: (a) the act(s) and/or omission(s) of the person(s) affected; (b) the act(s) and/or omission(s) of a third party not connected with the provision of the services contracted for and which were unforeseeable or unavoidable; (c) unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised; or (d) an event which either ourselves, our employees, agents or suppliers and subcontractors could not, even with all due care, have foreseen or forestalled.
Delays and other Travel Information We regret we are unable to offer you any assistance should a delay disrupt your itinerary. Any airline or other transport provider concerned may however provide refreshments and/or appropriate accommodation. We cannot accept liability for any delay which is due to any of the reasons set out in Force Majeure of these booking conditions. The latest flight timings will be shown on your tickets which will be dispatched to you approximately two weeks before departure. You should check your tickets very carefully immediately on receipt to ensure you have the correct flight times. If flight times change after tickets have been dispatched we will contact you as soon as we can to let you know.
The services and facilities included in your holiday will be deemed to be provided with reasonable skill and care if they comply with any local regulations which apply, or, if there are no applicable local regulations, if they are reasonable when compared to the local standards in practice.
Under EU Law, you have rights in some circumstances to refunds and/or compensation from the airline in cases of denied boarding, cancellation or delay to flights.
