Following our wonderful cookery experience holidays in Tuscany 2018 and Bordeaux 2019, this time we are in a dramatic and exciting location at the eastern end of La Alpujarra. Marko and Annie will be in the kitchen with a small group of those who would like to be ‘hands on’ with the cooking. It is completely voluntary, and we take it in turns, so no pressure. On the cooking front we are surrounded by local fresh produce so we can be really flexible, rather than plan precise menus. The owners of the property even have their own organic farm, so the whole area is rich in fresh ingredients. Fresh fish and meats are delivered most days.

If our previous holidays are anything to go by, it is about spending time with like-minded people in a social, convivial atmosphere. Meals and wine are all important with the option to walk it off in the spectacular surroundings. There will be plenty of opportunities to slope off and have your own space!

You probably won’t have heard of the tiny village of Mairena nestled in the hills of La Alpujarra on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada (3 hours from Malaga airport), just a few miles from where Gerard Brennan wrote ‘South from Granada’. You’re as likely to encounter a donkey as you are a car on your way to the village square: that fabled ‘old’ Spain is still alive and kicking. The property owners, Emma and David, were entranced by the sweeping views to the south and turned this idyllic village house and adjacent buildings in to a successful business - Las Chimeneas. They have created a harmonious, organic and soothing series of accommodation that strikes just the right balance between authenticity and comfort.

It’s not unusual for people to be stuck for words when they first set eyes on La Alpujarra, all the more so when you first open your bedroom shutters in the morning to behold the sweeping views down the valleys just in front of Las Chimeneas. This 800-year-old house breathes simple and solid comfort, in blissfully quiet Mairena which is far less touristy than some other villages. Giving you plenty of time for walking, reading and pure relaxation.
