WELCOME TO YOUR FOUNDATION It is with great pride that I welcome you to the Foundation of Light yearbook. The challenges facing us have never been tougher. Upheaval, uncertainty and fundamental changes in education, sport and government policy have all impacted on our work and our community. The continuing, relentless budget cuts and austerity measures have added to financial pressures on the Foundation, our funding partners and our stakeholders. And yet, exactly because of the challenges outlined above, our work had never been as important to the individuals, families and the region we serve. Our help, support and expertise have never been needed more. And I’m delighted to say that we’ve been more than up to the challenges we’ve faced. The Foundation has had a fantastic year and we have made great steps towards achieving all of our goals. We successfully launched our first ever Schools Pack, a prospectus that helped more schools than ever before access the full range of our education and sport programmes that meet national curriculum and OFSTED requirements. We’ve helped make big improvements in grassroots sport, developing programmes that will improve physical activity and the quality of coaching in the region, and our work with families and teenagers has never been better. But our biggest step forward this year has been gaining planning permission for the Beacon of Light. Once built, this will offer sport, education, health and employability opportunities for the whole community. We face a big task ahead of us raising funds for the Beacon, but the vital support we give to young people and their families will be greatly enhanced by the improved services and facilities we’ll be able to offer. This past year has once again shown that the Foundation’s resilience and perseverance is matched by those we work with. This yearbook will give you an insight into how vital we are to our region through some of their stories. If you are already involved with the Foundation, thank you for your continued support which helps make all of our work possible. If you’re yet to share my passion for the Foundation, I hope this yearbook will help convince you to do so.

YOUR COMMUNITY UNITED AND SAFER Samee Jassatt Kicks Volunteer This neighbourhood is for teenagers too
I started going to the Kicks programme on a night because it was a chance to do something positive - like a lot of teenagers I just wanted somewhere to hang out with my friends where I wouldn’t get hassled. The staff didn’t treat me or my friends like kids, they gave us support in organising activities that we wanted to do like football, crafts and trips off the estate. I started volunteering more than two years ago and have been able to get other youngsters involved which I think makes things better for everybody. Teenagers don’t always have the best reputation, especially on estates like ours, but the Foundation of Light ‘s outreach centre has given us the opportunity to show that we can do something good for ourselves and each other.

YOUR CHILDREN LEARNING ABOUT THE BIG ISSUES
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT HAVE DELIVERED OVER 320 HOURS PER WEEK 12 INVOLVE. EDUCATE. INSPIRE.
Mrs Margarita Acklam Headteacher Broadway Junior School Drugs can be a difficult subject to discuss with children In the final year of primary school, our children face a very challenging period when they begin to prepare for the transition from primary to secondary education. There is no doubt that at some stage they will experience peer pressure to experiment and do something different and this may include trying alcohol, drugs, cigarettes or solvents. It is therefore vital that we prepare them for the temptations and difficult challenges which lie ahead and provide them with the information and personal skills required to make the correct choices.

The Foundation of Light’s Tackle It programmes cover difficult subjects such as drugs, alcohol awareness, bullying and racism and are an excellent vehicle for building knowledge and understanding in these areas and preparing children for their new school and possibly an increased exposure to these issues. The education team from the Foundation address these subjects, via the medium of football, and encourage children to develop their thinking and understanding of these subjects and the implications not only for themselves, but for others. The Foundation’s programme gives children a much better chance at a safer and healthier future and this is undoubtedly something, I feel, that we are responsible for today.

YOUR FRIENDS SUPPORTED INTO WORK Neil Jones Former Back in the Game participant A future worth having When I first came across the Foundation of Light I was at my lowest point. I’d worked hard to get the qualifications for the career I wanted but had no success at all finding work. I had no money, no social life, no self-esteem and what appeared to be no future. I signed up to the Back in the Game employability course with low expectations but it really did turn my life around. They treated me like an individual and helped me make small changes that together made a big difference. I’m now in a job that I love and really feel that I’ve got my future back. My life has really turned around all thanks to the encouraging staff I met at the Foundation. Courses delivered in:

YOUR TEENAGER GIVEN A HELPING HAND Lee Smith Foundation of Light Apprentice How I got back on track I never thought my life could be like this. After finishing school I took up a college course but I was so shy that I found being in a class unbearable and eventually quit. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, I don’t think many people my age do, but I knew I had to do something and that’s when I came across the Foundation. Taking part in the Foundation’s programme wasn’t easy but they helped me learn and progress at a pace that challenged me but didn’t push me. Their approach really helped me overcome my shyness and helped me realise my potential. Plus, the balance of working on qualifications and personal development gave me what I needed in terms of practical education. I’m now doing an Apprenticeship and know what I want to do with my life and how to achieve it. I’ve done the hard work but without the opportunity that the Foundation gave me I wouldn’t be where I am now.

OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S STATEMENT It’s a real responsibility to keep developing the Foundation and its operations in line with the changing needs of the people we work with, who are at the heart of what we do. Although ensuring as many people as possible continue to access our services, the depth of our delivery remains a priority. Over this coming year a new streamlined offer will be developed around health, education, sport and play, and the world of work. Our progression pathways and ability to connect people with agencies have always been one of our strengths so we will strive to continue to develop these for the benefit of our participants. Qualifications remain a priority and we will develop a tiered, accredited programme for learners, other practitioners and staff. Developing our participants’ experience is important and work is well underway for us to achieve a quality award, underlining our ongoing commitment to them. We will also continue to track the social return on investment of our work to demonstrate our value to funders, donors and other relevant stakeholders. Building on this we aim to further improve staff development opportunities to keep the Foundation at the forefront of the community. A sophisticated fundraising strategy for the Beacon of Light project will be launched in 2014 and continue throughout the year. Discussions will take place this year to ascertain how the building will re-energise the way the Foundation delivers its services to local people, and how it will be the catalyst for us to achieve our 10 year vision. Through committing to quality in our programmes, people and delivery, we will provide communities with improved opportunities to improve education, employability, health and, ultimately, enjoyment of life. As ever our plans are ambitious, but we are confident that our plans are right and welcome your support in achieving them.
