WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL FOOTBALL CHARITY? The theme of this year’s book is one that is very close to my heart – football! I have been a football fan for more than 60 years and enjoyed a labour of love working in football for over three decades with Sunderland, Foundation of Light, Wembley Stadium and more recently St George’s Park – the national football centre. Coming from a footballing background there are many parallels to be drawn between what makes a successful football team and what the Foundation has achieved over the years. In football, success is most often measured week to week, by wins and losses, the league table and silverware. We are equally driven but our success is measured by different ambitions. Our goals are set to create legacy and make a lasting difference for generations to come. Our victories are about the communities we involve and motivate, the minds we educate, the people we inspire and most importantly the lives we change.
And 2015 has been a year to celebrate even more success stories and triumphs. It has been a year of remarkable achievements, surpassing even our own expectations. We coached over 36,000 course registrants, our ground breaking programmes won glowing recommendations from their peers, we received regional and national awards and our Chief Executive was recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list for her services to charities in the North East. But that’s not all – we also won the right to open our own specialist school and topped the £10m fundraising landmark for the Beacon of Light, our inspirational new home. These are outstanding accomplishments that will herald a new era for the Foundation. The various sections in this book celebrate our shared goals and successes, and demonstrate how we as a team are leading the pack and setting the standards others strive for. Thank you for being part of our team and our success.

WE PULL TOGETHER PEOPLE FROM A BROAD RANGE OF FIELDS TO ACHIEVE COMMON GOALS. Even though our staff are the core of our success, our team is much wider with donors, schools, participants and housing providers just some of the groups that link up with us in our mission to help communities realise and achieve their potential. Our mission to educate and inspire starts with involving organisations and individuals and our inclusive team ethos has helped us build a formidable group through which we enable real change in the region.
Amongst our team are: over 150 schools whose pupils benefitted from our focussed programmes, mapped to key curriculum areas and subject to many Ofsted inspections throughout 2015; local and national businesses who are able to invest in the development of their future workforce as well as realise their Corporate Social Responsibility; and housing providers dedicated to improving the lives of their tenants. Our most important team members however are our participants and we lead the field for providing inclusive opportunities. Everybody’s welcome as part of our team.

KNOWLEDGE USING SPECIALISTS TO ACHIEVE OUR GOALS
A PORTFOLIO AS BROAD AS OURS REQUIRES SPECIALISTS WHO ACHIEVE RESULTS. Our employability specialists had something to celebrate when our Back in the Game programme - which helps one in three learners find a job - received
a national award for its ‘remarkable achievements’. Being so deeply rooted in the communities we serve enables us to develop and adapt programmes that help individuals achieve their goals. Our Family Learning programmes, cited by Ofsted as “good practice”, help bring families closer

TACTICS A STRONG GAME PLAN INCREASES THE CHANCES OF SUCCESS
A PLANNED AND TAILORED APPROACH TO EACH COMMUNITY YIELDS THE GREATEST SUCCESS. Inspired and supported by our Family Finance programme, a Tow Law group of mothers formed a Community Bank after many in
the area had been affected by loan sharks and high-interest lenders. The programme empowered the group and their families to take greater control of their finances. In South Tyneside we took cookery equipment into schools to help families combat obesity, teaming up with the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation to teach them how to cook healthy, tasty food on a budget.

In Derwentside, youngsters supported the relaunch of a community learning facility by demonstrating their gardening skills and landscaping the surrounding area. Through the Improving Futures programme we discovered the need for more culturally diverse support across Sunderland, with one success including the setting up of a Bengali ladies’ group. Meeting once a week,
the group offers activities, information and guidance tailored to the women’s needs. Our international work continued with Foundation staff delivering sport and education programmes in a diverse range of locations including Ireland, Spain and Zambia. Wherever we are, we ensure that we’re making a difference with the right approach for each local challenge.

STAYING HEALTHY GETTING THE MIND AND BODY IN SHAPE FOR THE CHALLENGES AHEAD
THE PHYSICAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF SPORT ARE WELL DOCUMENTED AND WE HAVE DEVELOPED EVEN MORE OPPORTUNITIES THAN BEFORE FOR PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE.
In 2015 we hosted our largest girls’ football festival with almost 100 young girls attending, taking part in coaching sessions and taking inspiration from their role models from Sunderland AFC Ladies. Disability and inclusion remains high on our agenda, helping those under-represented in sport gain access to sessions and, more importantly, find a way to love sport.

Coaching from 18 months helps establish a lifelong love of being active and we have also developed phonics sessions to help even more children communicate with the world around them. Our Men’s Health programme has expanded and we now offer affordable and accessible boot camps across the region for adults wanting to get in shape.
Family Learning courses raise awareness of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety; special programmes delivered in schools build confidence and self-esteem whilst avoiding negative peer pressure; programmes for teens through to adults help develop self-worth and motivation, that is instrumental in affecting greater change in their lives. 1.

FOCUS AVOID DISTRACTIONS AND FOCUS ON THE TASK AT HAND
IN 2015 DENISE TAYLOR WAS APPOINTED AS PRINCIPAL DESIGNATE OF FOUNDATION OF LIGHT’S NEW SCHOOL. SHE HAS BEEN ON QUITE A JOURNEY, SEEING HOW THE FOUNDATION’S APPROACH
TO LEARNING HAS YIELDED SUCH FANTASTIC RESULTS. The partnership approach that the Foundation utilises ensures that the organisation compliments what schools are doing, as opposed to challenging or competing with it. For example, many schools utilise the Tackle It programme to address specific challenges in

GREAT SUPPORTERS > TRUSTED IT PARTNER
AS THE GAME CHANGES SO MUST THE TOOLS AND WE TEAMED UP WITH ONE OF THE BEST TO ENSURE THE RIGHT RESULT. Over the last 15 years our organisation has grown in size, engagement and reach, and to meet our developing operational needs we have signed up TSG to become our Trusted IT partner. As more time is spent in communities and less in our central Stadium of Light base, we shifted IT into the cloud with TSG guiding us along the way.
On their recommendation we have brought Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint on board to allow us to work remotely saving us time, and money, as well as streamlining our communications. ‘Sophos’ UTM (Unified Threat Management) ensures complete network security and with TSG’s own SystemCare, providing 24/7 remote monitored support, TSG make sure we are always getting the most of our IT. We’re proud to partner with TSG who are helping us keep on top of the game. To find out more about our trusted IT partners, call one of their team on 0333 220 0777 or visit tsg.com
