TEAM FOUNDATION 2016

THIS IS A REPORT OF OUR BEST BITS... In 2016 we celebrated a significant milestone: 15 years since the Foundation of Light was founded with the aim of inspiring people to change their lives for the better through the power of education and sport. Looking back over those 15 years was a humbling and inspiring experience for me.

2

INVOLVE. EDUCATE. INSPIRE.

It is incredible to compare the charity we are today and see how far we have come in that time. Over the years, we have built our reputation, won accolades and woven our programmes for self-improvement and social care into the fabric of society in the North East. Our integrity has been proven and our desire to innovate and push boundaries to change lives for the better has made us a blueprint for community engagement in football. It is unusual for us to look back because in this turbulent political, economic and social

landscape we always have our eyes on the future. In fact, our key achievements from 2016 are things that we will realise the real benefit of in the years to come. We opened our School in September with demand for its services over-subscribed, and are now seeing fantastic results with local youngsters benefiting from its unique and inspiring approach to education. In October, construction began on the Beacon of Light and our vision of community engagement for the future is becoming a reality today.

It has taken an immense amount of hard work, belief and foresight to get where we are today and it fills me with great pride to see the development of our new landmark facility, that will help so many people, starting to take shape. The last year has not been without its challenges but our excellent staff have risen to every single one of them. Football is a team sport, you can’t play or win on your own – and this yearbook highlights how individuals, programmes and organisations are all playing their

part to help our community succeed. I am indebted to the staff of the Foundation who make all this possible. They are a team unlike any other I have come across and they deserve their place in this book as much as anyone. In closing, what I can say has remained a constant over the last decade and a half is why we do what we do. We do it because we care and want to make a difference, here in the North East. They say charity begins at home and we live and breathe that ethos. We care about the North East, we care

about the local people in our communities, we care about young and old, we care about the people that feel they have been forgotten – and most of all we care about making a difference and changing lives for the better. And in 2017 we’ll be encouraging even more people to care about what we do and get involved.

FOUNDATION OF LIGHT

FOOTBALL IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO AND THIS YEAR’S YEARBOOK PROVES IT. For us football goes beyond the 90 minutes between referees’ whistles in football stadia. The way we use football makes it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; sometimes in groups of hundreds, sometimes one-to-one; but always meaningful. Taking some of the key positions and players on a football team, reinterpreting them as programmes, staff and the people we work with, this yearbook provides a window into our world. Not every position is taken and we’re always on the look out for new players to join us.

FOUNDATION OF LIGHT THE NEXT 12 MONTHS WILL CHANGE THE WAY WE WORK FOREVER. Foundation of Light has always been a forwardthinking organisation with an approach that affects sustainable and long-term change to improve people’s lives. We are now on the cusp of taking our next step towards that vision.

DEFENDER ‘A STRONG FOUNDATION’ PARENTS

CAPTAIN ‘INSPIRING OTHERS’ COURTNEY

(Each and every parent, carer, guardian and grandparent on our programmes)

(Current player in our Regional Talent Club)

After six years of planning and almost two years of construction the Beacon of Light will open in 2018, giving us a home capable of providing our region with the support that it needs and deserves. With £2m still needed, we will continue our fundraising drive for the Beacon through an engaging campaign that we hope will galvanise local population in their support of the project.

A good Centre Back is the rock upon which all strong teams are built.

A Captain is a player who supports the team, inspiring and bringing others into play, helping them succeed.

The move into the Beacon will also provide us with new challenges as an organisation and we will strengthen behind the scenes to ensure we are fit for purpose in advance of the facility opening. We will undertake an assessment and overhaul of our governance to help us capitalise on the new opportunities that will arise, and fortify procedures that will make our delivery even more effective, maximising

6

INVOLVE. EDUCATE. INSPIRE.

the impact that donations will make to the local population. The Beacon of Light will be self-sustaining and to facilitate this we will move to improve our commerciality. This will be realised through development of our fundraising strategy and a general move to operate more as a social enterprise within appropriate parts of the organisation. We have experienced unparalleled levels of growth since we launched 15 years ago. As an agile organisation used to embracing change we are well equipped for the transition ahead and with your continued support we will continue to flourish.

LESLEY SPUHLER OBE Chief Executive

Making the right choices for their children and family by enrolling on our programmes, we salute the parents we work with who are often the catalyst of bigger changes.

Courtney from our Regional Talent Club may be one of our best footballers but it’s her team spirit that we admire. A player who can be counted on when things get tough, her attitude is as formidable as her talent.

GOALKEEPER ‘PROTECTING GOALS’ MICHAEL

PLAYMAKER ‘FORWARD THINKING’ FOUNDATION

STRIKER ‘SCORING GOALS’ ETHAN

MIDFIELDER ‘CONNECTING PEOPLE’ JEBUN

(Foundation of Light’s Operations Manager for South Durham)

(An innovative and pioneering charity that has always been ahead of its time)

(A dedicated football scholar attending our new Scholarship programme)

(A successful graduate of our Improving Futures Programme)

Protecting the team from threats, the keeper is also in the best position to see where the rest of the team should position themselves.

A playmaker uses their vision and ingenuity to make the moves that help the team achieve their goals.

Passion, drive and singlemindedness to achieve their vision, strikers are driven to get what they want.

A midfielder’s role is to link play, connecting defence and attack so that the whole team can achieve.

Every team needs a bit of creativity and our Family Learning Ministry of Food programme is a great example of this. Read about how our ability to do things differently is paying dividends for family health.

Ethan loves football but it’s his drive to achieve in the classroom that sees him take this coveted position.

Through our Improving Futures programme Jebun has become someone who links together others in her own community making it stronger in the process.

Taking care of our goals and the goals of the communities we work with, Operations Manager Michael is a pair of safe hands and the right person to direct the rest of the team.

ESSENTIAL DECISION MAKERS AND OUR FOUNDATION. Parents are an integral part of our team – without them children would not progress and reach their full potential. Like a defender picking the right pass to start a play, parents make the right choices for their children, families and communities

when they become a part of our team. Our ever-growing Little Dribblers programme welcomes youngsters from as young as 18 months old to learn and play with their parents – not just football but numeracy, teamwork, physical literacy and more. In 2016, parents booked their children onto 280 football and sports coaching programmes, nurturing

the seed planted in Little Dribblers sessions, that love of physical play eventually becoming competitive. 1,300 parents backed the choice of their youngsters to take part in our Family Learning sessions which develop numeracy and literacy, improve health and behaviour, and bring families closer together.

EVERY TEAM NEEDS PLAYERS WHO INSPIRE. They may not be the most technically gifted player but their team know they can always rely on them when times get tough. Courtney is one such player. “When I heard Michael was ill I wanted to do something to show that we cared. This team is not just us players on the pitch, it’s everybody – our coaches, families, our friends who come and support us.”

Courtney inspired us.

Realising that Michael may lose his hair she shaved hers off and raised almost £2,000 for Cancer Research UK in the process, as well as organising a team photo to pledge support for their coach. We’re passionate about girls’ football but we’re also

SAFE HANDS PROTECTING OUR GOALS One of the most specialist positions on the pitch, a goalkeeper, is exactly that – someone who takes care of your goals. In this position we have Operations Manager for South Durham, Michael

Colclough, who is responsible for just one of our seven outreach sites, helping those in the Shildon area find a better future. From taking up the position in September 2015 he’s been able to double the size of our operation there which now offers programmes for people of all ages.

“To help a community you have to understand it, which you can only do by being part of it – we link up with local schools, residents’ associations, councils and community groups to really understand what’s needed and from there you can go about putting programmes and sessions in place. Everyone knows what the ultimate

goal is – to have a better life – and we have to be careful to protect and nurture that.” Covering a huge geographical area, our outreach centres make sure that we’re accessible to all, a vital component to our success.

USING CREATIVITY TO GET RESULTS Sometimes ingenuity can have a huge impact and that’s an approach that has served us well throughout our 15 years. We’ve always pioneered new ways of working, that’s been well documented. When Jamie Oliver’s Food Foundation chose four Premier League foundations to join up with, we were the only one to apply the teachings to a family learning setting. Helping children, parents and grandparents learn how to cook and be healthy together was a natural fit for us and by getting whole families involved we knew

the lessons would translate into changes in people’s homes. This decision was rewarded when the project won Northern England Project of the Year Award at the 2016 National Festival of Learning. “Sometimes it takes a little creativity to make a big difference – we know that getting different generations of families together to learn can yield great results and it seemed a natural fit for a programme designed to improve eating and nutrition habits. We have been able to get whole families on board with the ideas and recipes which they take home, plus it’s a lot more fun cooking together!” JOANNE BLACK Informal Educator foundationof light.co.uk

A BATTLING PLAYER SCORES GOALS A good striker is singleminded, bouncing off challenges and tackles that might otherwise bring them down, to reach their goal. Ethan is a promising young footballer taking part in our Football Scholarship programme which combines high-level coaching with

Education, helping school leavers bridge the gap between school and playing professional football, or progressing to university. He fought tooth and nail to be included in the programme as his examination grades didn’t meet the usual entry requirements. One thing we’ve always had is the strength to maintain the ability to treat people like individuals and after meeting with Ethan

and his parents we made the decision to give him a chance. Our staff have given him extra support but Ethan is the one putting the real work in, and his determination has seen him catch up to the level of his teammates. In the classroom and on the football pitch his hard work is paying off and he’s inspiring those around him to achieve more too.

THE PLAYER WHO CAN BRING OTHERS TOGETHER. Through accessing our ground-breaking Improving Futures programme Jebun Nahar went from wanting to make a difference in her community to becoming a community champion. Project staff helped the single mother of four gain the confidence and self-esteem to set up a Bengali Ladies Group, bringing together women in her community and helping

them access education and employment, as well as an important social network. Seeing the impact that the group had on school life for the women’s children, Valley Road Primary recognised an opportunity to employ Jebun to work in the school helping address wider issues for the ethnic minority groups in the community. She’s since been named an anti-bullying champion and even received an award from the local council for her work.

a big change in my life. I knew what I wanted to do but didn’t have the confidence or focus to do it. Thanks to a gentle push from the Foundation I’ve been on quite a journey in the last few years and I’m delighted to say it’s made a difference to others too.” Jebun is our linking player, a connector and someone who brings others into play which has a great effect for everyone.

Through the programme he also gained focus and direction, embarking on a quest to a career working with young people. His next ‘position’ in our team came when he became a volunteer

on the Pitstop programme, helping troubled youngsters improve their behaviour and rediscover their passion for learning, whilst gaining the hands-on experience that working in this difficult field requires. Last year Chris joined the Beacon of Light School team as a full-time Teaching Assistant, reaping the rewards of working through our progression pathway, not just focusing on instant, unsustainable results but real and lasting change. “It is like I’ve been in training for this job for the last few years! Working with the Foundation has helped nurture me throughout the whole process and helped me challenge myself to the point where I feel I’m now hitting my stride and really performing.”
