Heralding the first model in the Warriors collection, Montegrappa’s Samurai presents a design challenge like none seen before. Limited to only 177 pens in sterling silver, each one unique, the Samurai exists only as a push-system, pistonfilled fountain pen, fitted with an 18kt gold nib. Residing within a luxurious black lacquered box, one finds the Samurai pen, accompanied by a Katana-sword accessory that acts as a paper-cutting knife. The pen itself is a masterpiece of burnished sterling silver, a truthful model of an ancient samurai suit of armour made with the ancient lost-wax technique and accented with rose gold-plated details. A plethora of minuscule delights from Montegrappa’s artisans include the traditional kuwagata helmet, the sode shoulder and kote sleeve armour and the tekko arm and suneate thigh guards, reproduced with the utmost accuracy and precision. The warrior’s kusazuri skirt is reproduced in multi-layered, embroidered fabric. A combination of writing instrument and decorative figurine, the pen's cap forms the head, breast and arms of the soldier. The barrel comprises the figure’s lower limbs and the writing component’s juncture. The hands and waist armour are hinged, as are the limbs, for moving respectively. Combining beauty with the sophisticated appeal of a working miniature, the Samurai pen will prove as captivating as the noble warrior that inspired it. Particular for its eye-catching signature clip, showing a short staﬀ embraced by two intertwined serpents surmounted by wings, the Caduceus symbol is nowadays mostly known as the symbol of physicians, pharmacists, the US Army Medical Corps, and medicine in general. It does possess, however, a more poetic meaning, to be found in its ancient Greek and Roman origins. Mythological lore tells that the metal rod was that of Hermes, messenger of the gods, who bore it as a symbol of peace and inviolability. Fortuna was the Goddess of Fortune, the personification of luck according to the ancient Romans. Fortuna’s identity, as the embodiment of chance events, was closely tied to Virtus, or strength of character. Public oﬃcials who lacked this quality invited ill fortune on both themselves and Rome. Montegrappa believes that luck is indubitably linked to virtue, while education is the foundation onto which an individual develops and nurtures his or her innate talents. Handwriting is an essential element of the education process and an indispensable function, even in today’s hurried, digitized society. The drink itself is made of 40-degree premium-quality grappa, bergamot scents, and a habanero chili pepper twist. The Montegrappa Mule pen collection further displays its familial links with a cap top bearing the famous “1912” logo, while the nib is embellished with a filigree Montegrappa pattern. The cap and barrel are crafted in mirror-polished copper, further defined by a brushed silver-plated trim. The Shema is the prayer that serves as a centerpiece of the morning and evening Jewish prayer services, and this collection pays tribute to the prayer as a part of religious culture. The barrel of each writing instrument is decorated with engraving of the prayer Shema Yisrael itself, proclaiming the main idea of Judaism—the unity of God and the indissoluble union of the Jewish people with God. On the pen cap is the Star of David. In the wake of the great success of the Mule line, inspired by a famous cocktail, they looked again at another favorite tipple, the Blue Blazer. An enticing mix of scotch, boiling water, and powdered sugar, the Blue Blazer earns its incendiary name from the theatre that accompanies it: the drink is set alight, said to be the first cocktail to undergo the touch of the flame. Blazer is based on the Fortuna shape, but with its cap and body made, appropriately, of fire-burnished stainless steel with a vintagelooking brushed silver trim. The in-depth study of geometry during the Renaissance allowed painters to move away from a chronological illustration of reality in favor of a 3-dimensional representation. In fact, linear perspective generated an optical illusion: a flat 2D surface was perceived as a 3D image. Meisterstück Geometry uses a repetitive hexagon motif to generate an optical illusion and beautiful light reflections. This restage of the Geometric Dimension line is also inspired by Montblanc’s long-lasting tradition in geometrical form. The barrel and caps of the Solitaire Geometry instruments are fully covered in a Platinum or Champagne Gold coated engraved geometrical pattern with an optical eﬀect. The foreign minister of the Weimar Republic, Gustav Stresemann (1879–1929), was honored with the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1926 for his reconciliatory work between nations after World War I. Besides his impressive political career, Stresemann also became famous for the creation of a new kind of suit with thin stripes that was still sufficiently formal for official presentations and yet comfortable enough for his work at the office. A legend developed... and people began to call the striped Pelikan fountain pens of that era “Stresemann.” Both the suits and the pens still carry that name to this day. To honor this legend, Pelikan has named this latest addition to the standard collection, the Souveran with elegant stripes in anthracite, the Stresemann. The barrel with the deceptively simple anthracite stripes is made of cellulose acetate, using a traditional process that’s extremely labor-intensive. • Use your pen! The ink in a fountain pen flows most smoothly when the pen is used regularly. • Do not press down hard on the nib when the pen won’t write. Excessive pressure can damage the nib. When a pen does not write well, it is often because the pen needs to be cleaned and refilled. • Cap the pen properly by placing the cap onto the barrel rather than dropping the barrel into the cap which can result in ink spilling into the cap. • Write on quality stationery which is neither too absorbent, nor coated (giving a slick writing surface) nor too fibrous (releasing fibers which can clog your pen). • When traveling by airplane, your pen should be completely full of ink or completely empty. Air trapped in a partially filled ink cartridge or converter can expand with changes in altitude and cause a fountain pen to leak. • Place the cap on the pen when not in use; otherwise the ink can evaporate or thicken. • When not in use, a fountain pen containing ink should be stored in an upright position (nib facing the sky). If your pen will not be used for a week or so, it is best to remove the ink and clean the pen with cool water. • To clean your pen, first empty the ink. Use your converter or built-in filling mechanism to fill and flush the pen with cool water. Repeat several times until the water runs clear. For very clogged pens with built-in filling mechanisms, fill the pen with cool water and let the water sit overnight. Further, leave the uncapped pen soaking overnight in a glass of cool water, nib facing downwards, entirely submerged in the water. If a converter fill, remove the nib/grip section unit and allow it to soak in the water overnight. Use a soft cloth to wipe excess water from the nib when drying. • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance of your pen.
