On the cover A Brunelleschi Limited Edition Visconti takes pride in paying homage to both the great Renaissance architect and his miracle of design and engineering—the dome of the Florentine cathedral (Duomo), being the largest structure in the world made of clay based Florentine Cotto (Terracotta), the material that best represents Florence. It was from Etruria that terracotta was introduced to Rome, being used by the building industry in the imperial capital chiefly to manufacture bricks and tiles. The Brunelleschi fountain pen is an oversized, eight-sided pen accurately reflecting the Florentine cathedral dome. Weighing roughly 45 grams (the actual Dome is 45 meters wide), a perfect weight for daily use. Its shape is based on Leonardo’s Divine Proportion, which makes the size of the cap 0.618 of the size of the barrel. The material, a Cotto Fiorentino terracotta resin compound, was developed on the basis of Visconti’s experience with the lava used in their Homo Sapiens pen. The brick colored terracotta compound is extremely stable and does not dull with age. Rose-gold finishing, burin-engraved with a Florentine Cathedral theme on the barrel ring. The fountain pen features Visconti’s High Vacuum Power Filler, enhanced with Visconti’s 23kt 950 Palladium Dreamtouch nib (available in XF, F, M, B, BB, and 1.3mm Stub widths), and is packaged with a traveling inkwell for filling the pen while traveling; plus a glass inkwell with ink; all housed in a luxurious presentation case in eco-leather. Visconti’s latest creation celebrates the 90th anniversary of the opening of the great Route 66, the famous American highway spanning 2,448 miles beginning in Chicago, Illinois and ending in Santa Monica, California. The road served as a major route for westward migration until the early 1970s, also symbolizing freedom and adventure. Many businesses were founded and thrived along Route 66, helping to drive the economies of the small towns along the route. The road has been celebrated through pop songs, movies and the hit 1960s TV show bearing its name. This Great Characters Edition honors one of the most revolutionary and influential jazz musicians of all time - Miles Dewey Davis. He was not only a trumpeter with an outstanding sound but pioneered virtually every phase of the evolution of postWWII American jazz, with the engraved patterns on the pen body representative of these diverse movements: eg. Be-bop; Cool Jazz; Hard Bop; Modal Jazz; and Jazz Fusion. The overall shape of the writing instruments is inspired by the trumpet, emphasized through the trumpet keys on the clip. The cone at the barrel end is in blue to remind us of “Kind of Blue,” considered by many as the greatest jazz album of all times, with the shape of the cone inspired by the special “Heim” mouthpiece he used to play! The cap ring with its 2006 engraving reminds us of the year of his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To top it all off, the nib is a gorgeous 14kt solid gold, rhodium-coated piece with an engraving of his famous silhouette. The fountain pen is piston fill.
