Exhibition

Saturday, December 8, 2018 through Sunday, January 20, 2019

M

ost chairs encountered throughout the day define themselves fairly simply — a place at the family table, a comfortable spot with a great view of the river, a seat of corporate power. When looking at the 43 chairs selected for “The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design,” however, there is much more to see than simple pieces of furniture. These works of art have compelling stories to tell about American history, the evolution of American design, and incredible artistry and craftsmanship. "The Art of Seating" provides audiences with a unique opportunity to see chair types that usually reside in private homes, withheld from public display. The American Chair Collection, the center of this exhibition, is an amazing and comprehensive private collection of iconic and historic chairs reaching back from the mid-1800s to pieces from today’s studio movement. The exhibition provides an opportunity to see readily recognizable pieces alongside those rarely seen by the public. Selections from the Thomas H. and Diane DeMell Jacobsen Ph.D. Foundation offer a stylistic journey in furniture with showstoppers by John Henry Belter, George Hunzinger, the Herter Brothers, the Stickley Brothers, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi, Frank Gehry, and others waiting to be discovered. The exhibition also features contemporary and historic designs by some of the country's biggest manufacturers such as Knoll, Herman Miller, and Steelcase. 4

rowing out of President George W. Bush’s personal commitment and the ongoing work of the Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, “Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors” brings together 66 full-color portraits and a four-panel mural painted by President Bush of members of the United States military who have served our nation with honor since 9/11, and whom he has come to know personally since leaving office. Each featured painting is accompanied by the inspiring story of the warrior depicted, written by President Bush. As the stories unfold, readers and visitors will encounter the faces and the hearts of those who answered the nation’s call and learn of their bravery on the battlefield, their journey to recovery, and the continued leadership and contribution they make as civilians. In addition to the collection of portraits, the exhibit includes information and resources created by the Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative that visitors can use to learn how to better support post-9/11 warriors in their communities. These resources are intended to help bridge the military-civilian divide.

Joe MacInnis

“In Praise of Empathy, Eloquence and Endurance” Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Dr. Joe MacInnis studies leadership and mentorship in high-risk environments. His pioneering undersea science and engineering projects, including exploring the ocean beneath the North Pole and diving to the Titanic, have allowed him to study human performance. His stunning, visually-driven presentation will take us on a tour of the cold and deep ocean and reveal how the ocean-inspired “Avatar” may be the most important environmental film ever made. Along the way, he will demonstrate how deep empathy, deep eloquence, and deep endurance are essential to all forms of art and science, and to our emotional and spiritual well-being.

Eric Motley

“My American Inheritance: An Odyssey of Grace and Gratitude” Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Dr. Eric Motley has lived the American dream, buoyed by caring grandparents and members of his Montgomery, Alabama neighborhood. The first in his family to go to college, Motley graduated from Samford, earned a Ph.D. at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews, and became the youngest appointee in President George W. Bush’s White House. Now an executive vice president of the Aspen Institute, Motley brings together diverse leaders in an effort to solve critical problems in society. His new memoir, “Madison Park,” celebrates the place and people who shaped him — and the true meaning of community.

Christopher Plummer is known as one of the finest stage performers of his generation, winning two Tony awards for Best Leading Actor. Equally capable of channeling good nature or villainy as required by the script, Plummer is able to straddle starring and character roles. Ben Stein is one of the most famous economics teachers in America, and his film and television credits have made him a household name. In real life, Stein is a powerful speaker on economics, politics, education, and history, and is considered one of the great humorists on political economy and how life works. Stein is a graduate of Yale Law School (1970). He has been a poverty lawyer, speech writer for Presidents Nixon and Ford, columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and a teacher of law and economics. He has written or cowritten roughly 30 books, many of them New York Times best-sellers.

The Atlantic magazine has identified Jonah Goldberg as one of the top 50 political commentators in America. He is a member of the board of contributors to USA Today, and a regular member of the “Fox News All-Stars” on “Special Report with Bret Baier.” He is also the author of the New York Times best-seller “Suicide of the West” (Crown Forum, 2018), as well as two previous New York Times best-sellers. Henry Kissinger

Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Russo will discuss “The Destiny Thief,” his first collection of personal essays, which give deep insight into the creative process of one of the nation’s greatest writers. Russo is author of eight novels, including the best-selling “Everybody’s Fool” and “That Old Cape Magic.” In 2002 he received the Pulitzer Prize for “Empire Falls,” which like “Nobody’s Fool” was adapted to film, in a multiple-award-winning HBO miniseries; in 2016 he was given the Indie Champion Award by the American Booksellers Association; and in 2017 he received France’s Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine.

Dr. Henry Kissinger, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and legendary foreign policy advisor, is currently President and Chairman of Kissinger and Associates, and former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State to Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. According to Dr. Kissinger, "The most difficult yet important question about the world into which we are headed is this: What will become of human consciousness if its own explanatory power is surpassed by Artificial Intelligence, and societies are no longer able to interpret the world they inhabit in terms that are meaningful to them?” Dr. Kissinger warns if we do not develop a national vision soon, we may discover that we started too late.

She would mix her huge collection of African art with her Matisses, Chagalls, Renoirs, Modiglianis, Salvador Dalís, and many others. Her beauty salons were also miniart museums. Marlene Strauss, Ph.D., explores this captivating woman who was not a beauty queen, but believed that wellgroomed women were more selfassured and more successful. Strauss lectures annually at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the 21st Century Club in Cleveland, and other organizations throughout the U.S.

Together, they absorb the passing seasons, just like the weathered wooden structure of the salon “home” that they share. Watch the beloved film adaptation on March 8th. See page 34 for details. Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. Dixon Education Building Facilitator: Billy David

In the 1930s no one would have predicted that by the end of the 20th century, Winston Churchill and George Orwell would be considered two of the most important people in British history. In crucial moments, they responded first by seeking the facts, seeing through the lies and obfuscations, and then acting on their beliefs. Together, to an extent not sufficiently appreciated, they kept freedom as the focus for the West.

As in previous years, due to the popularity of this event, children will be instructed on the maximum number of eggs they may collect. Please remember this is a preschool event and the “egg limit” allows all preschoolers (the littlest babies and those who can crawl, walk, or run) to participate in the program. Following the egg hunt, Mr. Forbes is available to meet with families and sign copies of his delightful books. The Children’s Library would like to express their gratitude to Boy Scout Troop 141 and Troop Leader Mr. Ray Kramer for hiding the Easter eggs! Note: There will be no arts and crafts activity on this day. In the event of rain this program will be canceled. No buses permitted.
