LET FAITH LEAD THE WAY

Confident in Our Faith “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:12

Last month at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Gales Ferry, we, as a diocese, had the distinct honor of hosting the Incorrupt Heart of Saint John Vianney, the patron saint of priests working in parishes. There were hundreds in attendance for viewing and veneration, as part of our Monthly Holy Hour for Vocations. As I watched many of you kneeling at the reliquary that holds the relic of this Saint, I felt humbled by your presence. We are entering a new year of exceptional challenge, significance and milestones as a community of faith. Your presence at the Holy Hour demonstrates how strong our faith is in the Diocese of Norwich.

We are living in a troubled world. Saint John Vianney lived during a troubled time in history, the French Revolution. We can learn from the example set by this humble priest. The solution is not to concede to injustice, immorality, excess and disrespect for life. The solution is to be in communion with God through prayer and living our faith not simply professing it.

Traditionally, this is the time of year for making resolutions. For many, the dawn of a new year brings about thoughts of new beginnings, a fresh start, an opportunity to reach personal goals. We know that there is merit in improving both

physically and mentally, after all Saint Paul tells us “our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19). One aspect of our wellbeing that should not be overlooked is our spiritual nature.

A few years ago, when speaking with Vatican employees and their families, Pope Francis shared this thought, “Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are . . . Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love.” Meditating on these two directives will lead to tangible acts.

Saint John Vianney’s words can help us to create resolutions that will deeply impact our lives both here on earth and eternally with God. He said, “Do not try to please everybody. Try to please God, the angels, and the saints—they are your public.” How many times do we find ourselves acting in a way to seek the approval of others? I recently read that 23% of everyone who makes a resolution sees it through to completion. Why do the other 77% fail at their attempt at a better life? According to experts in these matters, people have trouble persevering with their resolutions because they aren’t specific enough and are too far reaching. For instance, rather than resolving to read the Bible from cover to

cover, instead, vow to read the daily readings and perhaps a short commentary.

As Catholics we are not unfamiliar with the concept of resolutions. When we participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, with our whole heart and in complete faith and openness, we are making a fresh start, reconciling ourselves to God and to the Church. There is perhaps no better New Year resolution than the one the psalmist wrote, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

Be confident in your faith. Be confident this New Year, that as the days grow longer and your faith grows stronger, the words of Saint John Vianney will become true for each and everyone of us- “It is always springtime in the heart that loves God”. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, D.D.

LET FAITH LEAD THE WAY

Confiados en Nuestra Fe

“Oh Dios, crea en mí un corazón puro, implanta en mis entrañas un espíritu nuevo” Salmo 51:12

January 2019 | FOUR COUNTY CATHOLIC | www.norwichdiocese.org

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

4

Grateful for an Abundance of Gifts Father Gregory Galvin, Director of Priestly Vocations Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone around the diocese for the many prayers for vocations to the priesthood throughout 2018 and for your support of our Advent Seminarian gift card drive! Deacon Michael Castiblanco recently traveled to the Holy Land with his classmates from the seminary. That trip included a canonical retreat in anticipation of priestly ordination this coming June. Two of our seminarians spent the holidays with their families in Colombia. The remaining seminarians attended a Christmas gathering with Bishop Cote filled with prayer, conversation, some good food and gifts. The men are always very appreciative of the support you provide, through the Advent Seminarian gift card drive that assists them with their personal expenses throughout the school year. Thank you! This past December we had a unique opportunity at our Monthly Holy Hour for Vocations in Gales Ferry at Our Lady of Lourdes parish. At

Bishop Cote’s request we were able to host the first-class relic of St. Jean M. Vianney, patron saint of parish priests. The relic, which is the incorrupt heart of the saint, is on National Tour with the Knights of Columbus. As Bishop Cote commented to me early in the planning stages, “this is a true gift to the diocese” regarding having the opportunity to host the relic on the exact night we gather in one of our diocesan parishes to pray for an increase of priestly vocations. A gift it was. A spiritually powerful evening which saw easily over 700 people visit and be present to pray before the relic of St. Jean M. Vianney. Everyone had the opportunity to touch the relic with rosaries, scapulars, prayer cards and other devotional objects. Some people just wanted to touch the reliquary which held the heart of a man and priest who simply loved Christ and the priesthood he was called to live for the family of God. We were also blessed with a special gift from Peter Sonski, the gentlemen who is accompanying the relic around the country. Mr. Sonski gifted Bishop

Cote with a beautiful picture of St. Jean M. Vianney which we will now display at every Monthly Holy Hour. The vocation office will make it available for other opportunities as well. During the first week of January, I will be attending the FOCUS SEEK National convention being held in Indianapolis. The work of the Holy Spirit, through the many different speakers, presenters and activities of learning and sharing their faith, seems to truly touch and open the heart of these young adults who are just so hungry to receive and to share what God desires to give them. On the national level this convention is no longer just for college students. It is also open to parish priests and parishioners looking to learn the fine intricacies of truly becoming disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Please pray for the contingent of students attending from UCONN again this year. May God continue to bless our diocese, through these special graces, with many more strong vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

t a retirement party honoring two diocesan employees, Sr. Elissa Rinere, C.P., and Mrs. Judy Pappagallo, Bishop Michael Cote commended them both for their unwavering dedication and loyalty to the Diocese of Norwich and presented them with the Patrici-Anne Award for distinguished service. Sr. Elissa, who has worked for the diocese for the past 13 years, most recently served as Chancellor in addition to her other duties as Diocesan Director of both the Office of Pastoral Planning and the Office of Worship and judge and auditor for the Diocesan Tribunal Office. She assumed the duties of Chancellor in December 2017 following the untimely death of the previous Chancellor, Monsignor Robert Brown. “The Diocese was in a difficult position when Msgr. Brown died so unexpectedly,” said Sr. Elissa. “I think I managed to keep the everyday, ordinary business of the diocese moving forward. I was honored that the Bishop asked me to serve in this role.” Sr. Elissa was 8 the first female chancellor for the

diocese. She has been a member of the Sisters of the Cross and Passion for 56 years, and she will continue to serve on the order’s provincial leadership team through 2021. In presenting her with the PatriciAnne Award, Bishop Cote said it was appropriate that Sr. Elissa be singled out for this special commendation. “You are a woman of faith whose religious commitment is evidenced in your love for the church and your tireless perseverance in carrying out your responsibilities….You have given yourself wholeheartedly to your labors in the Lord’s vineyard and you inspire all who know and serve with you.” Bishop Cote noted that Sr. Elissa and he were friends from when they studied together at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where Sr. Elissa received her doctoral degree in Canon Law and later served as faculty. When the diocese began plans for restructuring, Bishop Cote invited her to oversee this process through the Office of Pastoral Planning. “At that time, I knew Sister was the person who could help us get through this,” he said, praising her for her stamina and

professionalism. “I am very grateful to you personally and professionally for your great gift to the Church and your love for the Church.” In accepting the Patrici-Anne award, Sr. Elissa said that when she left the faculty at Catholic University, she happily found herself in Norwich. “It has become home to me and I appreciate the opportunity I had to do what I did.” While she embraces retirement and the time to run a different pace of life that will include more personal reading, writing and leadership work for her religious community, she said, “I am happy to leave, but I’m sorry to leave as well.” Bishop Cote also praised Judy Pappagallo for her 41 years of dedicated and loyal service to the Diocese in a variety of secretarial positions for the Chancellor, Cathedral of Saint Patrick, Diocesan Development office, Office of Safe Environments and most recently the Bishop Flanagan Ministry Center. In addition, Judy served on the Norwich Board for Catholic Charities and continues to serve as President of the Norwich Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. The Bishop told Judy that presenting

her with the Patrici-Anne award is an “Expression of our affection for you and the esteem in which you are held by colleagues, friends, and this Diocesan Family. Your love for God and your family are evidenced in the way you reach out to others and are always ready to help them. As a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother you modeled for others how to manage innumerable responsibilities well. You serve others with cheerful enthusiasm and genuine caring and concern.” Judy and her husband, Ted, have been married for 53 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. They have been members of the Cathedral of Saint Patrick for 47 years, where Judy continues to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. “I have always enjoyed the people I have worked with and the camaraderie among the staff in all of the offices where I have worked,” said Judy. “In whatever position I worked in, I always felt like I belonged there and am proud to have contributed a small part to helping the Church in this diocese.”

ver 700 people flocked to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry on December 13th to venerate the incorrupt heart of St. John Vianney. The major relic is in the early stages of a national tour organized by the Knights of Columbus, and at the request of Bishop Michael R. Cote, it was hosted as part of the diocese’s Monthly Holy Hour for Vocations. Housed in an ornate gold reliquary, the incorrupt heart was carried into the church in a procession led by the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard, Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, the Very Reverend Gregory Galvin, diocesan director of vocations, the Very Reverend Brian Converse, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, and Deacon William

McGann of Our Lady of Lourdes. Beginning at 5 p.m. quiet prayer and veneration was led by Bishop Cote. Monthly Holy Hour for Vocations, which included a rosary prayed in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The reliquary was placed on the altar beside the Sacred Host in the monstrance, recalling the saint’s great love for the Eucharistic Jesus. As Vianney explains, “There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, he would have given it to us.” The pews of the church were overflowing with not only clergy and religious but also hundreds of lay people ready to honor the saint and ask for his powerful intercession. any eagerly gathered into the Cathedral of Saint Patrick for the annual bilingual Mass and fiesta in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, 2018, her feast day. This popular festivity celebrates both the Blessed Virgin, loving mother and powerful intercessor, and the culture that she communicated through. Attendees included many families, some dressed in traditional outfits. The music for the liturgy was provided by a mariachi band, and the Gospel, the account of the Annunciation, was proclaimed in both Spanish and English. Bishop Michael R. Cote served as the principal celebrant of the Mass, which was concelebrated by many priests of the diocese, including the homilist, the Rev. Juan Angel Aguirre of Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Windham. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to the poor farmer Saint Juan Diego in 1531, asking him to have a church built where she could hear the petitions of the Mexican people. She is credited with converting countless Aztecs to Catholicism, and today she is honored as both patroness of the Americas and patroness of life. Her famous words to Juan Diego were revisited as guests left the church: “Do not let anything worry you … Am I not here, she who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection?”
