On November 4, 2017, Monsignor Brown was suddenly called from us to eternal rest in God’s waiting arms. We mourn, as a diocesan family, this heavy loss of a priest devoted to ministering hope and God’s love to all who were fortunate to know him. He believed through the strength of faith that “we live in hope.” Encouraged by his example, we will continue to live our faith with great energy as he would wish for us. He will always remain with us -- we the fortunate who were blessed to have enjoyed his presence in our lives.

Monsignor Brown, the son of Elsie and James Marshall Brown, grew up in nearby East Hampton, CT, studied for the priesthood in Rochester, NY and returned home to be ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1969 by the Most Reverend Vincent J. Hines, Bishop of Norwich. Following his early pastoral assignments at St. John Church in Old

Saybrook, Sacred Heart in Norwichtown, St. John in Fitchville and St. Joseph in New London, he would be appointed Assistant Chancellor of the Diocese of Norwich in 1976 by the Most Reverend Daniel P. Reilly, Bishop of Norwich.

Appointed Chancellor in 1989, he would serve for 41 years in the Chancellor’s office. During that remarkable tenure, he would be appointed a Prelate of Honor in 1992 by Pope Saint John Paul II with the title of Monsignor.

Over the many years of devoted service to the people of the Diocese, the local communities and in service to the Lord, he distinguished himself as a humble servant with an extraordinary capacity to help others and lift their lives. He served on a great many committees, boards and councils – all in alignment with his faith-centered mission to help the most vulnerable. Many will remember his organizing annual tribute Masses to

those who serve in the military, education, the medical profession, firefighters, law enforcement, the legal profession, the disabled and those celebrating enduring marriages.

Many will also remember his appointments as chaplain to the Ct State Police, L & M Hospital and the Law Enforcement Council with its 22 police departments across Connecticut.

No one seems to quite understand how he could possibly have reached out in faith and service to so many. We do know with certainty how much his caring efforts were appreciated by all across the Diocese.

In prayerful remembrance, Bishop Michael R. Cote, shared that “We pray for Monsignor’s swift journey into the peace and light of God the Father. We are extremely grateful for the time we spent together on the earthly leg of his journey.”

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we approach the traditional season of Thanksgiving, so close to its place of origin, we find ourselves facing persistent social justice challenges and troubling threats to personal and national security. By any measure, these are severely trying times.

In the midst of what seems to be one crisis against humanity after another, His Holiness Pope Francis has a powerful message for us -- “What a real Christian is like, is not whiny and angry, but convinced by the strength of the Resurrection that no evil is infinite, no night without end, no hate is invincible from love. Those who have Christ at their side truly no longer fear anything. A Christian is a missionary of hope.”

Pope Francis’ message is central to the times in which we live and the opportunity we share to stand up to the imposing challenges before us. To lift each other up.

For weeks now, we have been struggling with the shock and grief of the injured and the lives lost at the horrific tragedies in Las Vegas, New York City, and Sutherland Springs, Texas. At the same time, recovery efforts continue for the victims of the hurricanes and wild fires. As we work at collecting ourselves and finding ways to reach out and help others, the relentless broadcast media and social media do their best to overwhelm us with constant coverage of threats to our safety and sanity.

All the while, we are deeply concerned and actively reaching out to the millions of refugees trying to escape wars and poverty. We remain determined to advocate for social justice and to ease racial tension. We are hard at work protecting

life and the dignity of all our brothers and sisters.

Moved by the compassion of Christ, we are there for the hungry, the poor, the vulnerable, the lonely and the homeless.

In fufulling the Christian mission, in time, we rely on the strength of our faith and the resolve to actively live our faith. Worshipping and living our faith in freedom is the blessings for which we are grateful at this time of thanksgiving.

Scripture reminds us in Philippians 4:6-8, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” We give thanks for the opportunity for the freedom to worship, to serve, to help overcome and to heal.

How do we cope with the heavy burden and how do we help others survive their time in need?

How do we let faith and hope lead the way? A sure way is to gather together as one in prayer, in receiving the grace of the Eucharist, in service through our support of diocesan ministries and parish initiatives. Our ministries such as Catholic Charities, Outreach to Haiti, the St. Vincent de Paul centers, Diocesan Schools among so many others help so many families in need each and every day.

Your contributions and volunteer hours make these support services possible. You make a difference.

You lift lives and save lives and souls. God bless you for your strength and kindness.

A further way to draw strength and radiate faith is to worship and pray together. The power of joining together at Mass on Sunday or any opportunity should never be underestimated. It comforts the soul and helps center our lives as an active

community of faith.

A short story as example for you -- two weeks ago, we held a local retreat for the employees of the diocesan chancery. It was an honor for me to serve as the principal celebrant at Mass and participate in leading the prayer sessions. Our dearly departed Monsignor Brown, as Diocese Chancellor, had helped plan the day of recollection and also served as one of the concelebrants of the Mass. Both Monsignor and I were surprised and gratified at the number of attendees who came up to us afterward and shared their personal responses to how they were uplifted by joining together in recollection with colleagues they may not see often enough.

One response that moved me was a ministry director who commented that one of the prayers so inspired him that he was going to begin saying that prayer each morning to start his day and take on its challenges and blessings. Even those working so closely with the Church are often moved by the prayerful and loving fellowship of uniting in prayer.

Be sure to join with your fellow parishioners on Sunday and at every opportunity. You will feel the “peace of God that surpasses all understanding.”

En medio de lo que parece ser una crisis tras otra contra la humanidad, Su Santidad el Papa Francisco tiene un poderoso mensaje para nosotros: “Un verdadero cristiano, no es quejumbroso o se enoja, sino que está convencido por la fuerza de la Resurrección que ningún mal es infinito, no hay noche sin fin, ningún odio vence al amor. Aquellos que tienen a Cristo a su lado ya no temen nada. Un cristiano es un misionero de la esperanza “.

El mensaje del Papa Francisco es central para los tiempos en que vivimos y es la oportunidad que tenenos para hacer frente a los desafíos ante nosotros. Levantarnos mutuamente.

Una respuesta que me conmovió fue la de un director de ministerio quien comentó que una de las oraciones lo conmovió tanto que iba a comenzar a decir esa oración cada mañana para comenzar su día y asumir sus desafíos y bendiciones. Incluso quienes trabajan tan estrechamente con la Iglesia a menudo se conmueven con la fraternidad amorosa al unirse en la oración.

The first thing that strikes me every year as I attend the conference is the number of new vocation directors. On average, every year there are usually 40-50 new vocation directors appointed around the country. This year alone, they announced 75 new directors attending the conference. The national average for a vocation director in office is three years. In my experience that is a very short time. What then is the formula for success of a vocation program? This is why Mr. Graves’ article seemed so interesting to me.

Some of the important points made by the bishops who were interviewed include the importance of our Catholic Schools, invitations by priests to young men who show a willingness to work for the Lord, the support of families, identifying men who desire to serve the Church and most of all the power of prayer.

For example; Bishop Robert Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin, said; “The key is prayer and God’s grace…” Bishop James Conley of Lincoln, Nebraska began his response with the words: “The secret of a successful vocations program, I believe, begins with prayer.

Vocations come from God.” Thomas Daly, Bishop of Spokane, Washington said the following: “It’s not so much about programs, but prayer. I ask people to pray for vocations, and stressed the need for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. God will not give us the priests we need if we don’t put the Eucharist in the center of our lives. It all begins and ends with prayer.”

Upon my return, I came across an article from the National Catholic Register entitled: 13 Bishops Take a Closer Look at Vocations. The article, written by Jim Graves, was put together with quotes from different bishops across the Country with whom Mr. Graves had spoken over the past several years. Following are a few quotes from the article emphasizing what I have experienced as a vocation director now in my eleventh year for the diocese.

It is always a great day of golf and networking, but the most important thing, the reason we all come together, is to raise money for Catholic Charities and the work they do.”

Firefighters and EMS: Angels in our Midst

ometimes God sends angels to minister to us. Sometimes these angels come without wings and ride in firetrucks and ambulances.

Anyone who doubts this needs only to recall the comments that victims often make about their rescuers being their “angels in disguise” or “guardian angels”. Bishop, Michael R. Cote, said welcoming everyone to the 25th annual Firefighters and EMS Mass on October 14, “You are angels that God places in our midst”.

Our world is far from ideal and in recent times it can easily feel as if the world is spinning out of control with wars, violence, and natural disasters breaking out across the globe. This Mass and gathering was a chance to thank and pray for the many firefighters and EMS personnel who put their lives on the line so that the rest of us may live another day.

Two ladder trucks were parked on each side of the street. A giant American flag had been hoisted at the top of the ladders, high above the ground. Other emergency vehicles were nearby and Norwich police were directing the flow of traffic.

Minutes before Mass started, a parade of wingless angels – firefighters and EMS personnel – marched down Broadway toward the cathedral. They were led by the Connecticut Firefighters Pipes and Drums. The Firefighters and EMS turned and stood in formation in Monsignor King Memorial Park (the small park across from the cathedral) and the Pipes and Drums turned left and formed two lines on the sidewalk entrance to the cathedral. Bishop Cote, concelebrants, and Knights of Columbus were there to meet them.

“Lift High the Cross”.

The guest homilist was Father Robert Marciano, pastor of St. Kevin Church in Warwick, RI, and chaplain at the Providence and Warwick Fire Departments, two of his many other notable chaplaincy positions involving first responders. Father Marciano reminded everyone how September 11, 2001 changed our world forever and that one of the first “first responders” to lose his life that day was Father Mychal Judge, a

Franciscan friar and priest who was the chaplain for the New York City Fire Department.

Father Marciano said “That fateful day in American history opened our eyes to the brave first responders who come to our rescue”. Father continued to say that being part of this special Mass was a way to honor the men and women we call on for help in emergencies. Quoting St. Paul who said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, Father Marciano said to the heroes in the Cathedral “… and you do precisely that every single day.”

Prayers for our “wingless angels” were offered during the General Intercessions, and after the Sacrament of Holy Communion, everyone prayed the “Prayer of Firefighters and

EMS Personnel”. The prayer asked God for “the courage and alertness to protect our neighbors and all others whom we pledge to aid”, reminding us that these angels are flesh and blood who need God’s gifts to live out their calling. There was a moving reading of the Roll of Honor which is a list of the names of all those who died in the line of duty since 1993.

The firemen’s bell was rung after each name was read.

The Connecticut Pipes and Drums marched to the front of the sanctuary and played “Amazing Grace” with the instruments’ sounds filling the entire cathedral. After that, everyone stood and sang our National Anthem, followed by the powerfully worded recessional hymn, “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory”. After Mass, a reception catered by Richard Bazinet of Ice Rink Eatery was held in the cathedral hall.

The Firefighters/EMS Mass Committee did a wonderful job helping to prepare for this special Mass. Chairpersons were Heather Mislivets-Ahern (firefighter, Mashantucket Pequot Fire Department.) and Lieutenant Chris Koretski (Misquamicut and Watch Hill Fire Departments, Westerly, RI.).

“Our Faith Calls Us to Action” Volunteer – Maryann Boord

The theme for the 2017 ACA is “Our Faith Calls US to ACTION”.

Each month we feature someone who supports our Diocesan Ministries by following this motto.

In 1994-1995 her husband, Pat, and she were Co-Directors of the Norwich Mission House in Port au Prince, Haiti. “Upon returning to the States, I was appointed to the Hospice St. Joseph (HSJ) Board of Directors and then continued as a Board member on the Outreach to Haiti (OTH) Board when the Hospice St. Joseph Board and the Haitian Ministry Board merged. I have served as Secretary to the HSJ Board and the OTH Board for many years,” Maryann recalls.

Maryann is also a member of the Annual Gala Committee for Outreach to Haiti, which is their biggest fundraiser of the year. “We work all year planning this event, usually via monthly conference calls. In addition to planning, I am the contact person

for the venue, handling the menu, set up, etc. and I do the seating and menu selection charts,” Maryann stated.

Her volunteerism extends well beyond her roles with Outreach to Haiti to include: a Lector and a member of the Catholic Outreach Committee at Notre Dame Parish in Durham; 2nd Vice President of the Durham Agricultural Fair Association; an Associate of the Sisters of Mercy since 1998 – recently elected Chair of the Mercy Center Board of Trustees (Hartford Diocese) and additionally serves as Co-Chair of their Mission Integration Committee. Maryann has also served the 6-year term limit on the St.Vincent de Paul Middletown Board of Directors, including the last several years as their Board’s Secretary.

When asked why she volunteers and what she enjoys most about her volunteer experiences, Maryann’s answer comes from her heart…

“I feel called to share who I am,

what I have received, and what I believe. I am very grateful that I am able to respond to the call to serve. I am healthy enough, strong enough, and free enough to say yes. They allow me to enrich and share my spirituality, reach out and serve my community and beyond, stay physically and mentally active and remain connected to my Haitian brothers and sisters.

There is a sense of fulfillment at the end of the day.”

Maryann’s volunteerism embodies the Outreach to Haiti motto, “Helping Haitians help Haitians.”

Maryann Boord has been volunteering in the Diocese for more than 45 years and has every intention of adding many more years of service to her résumé. Early on, she served as a member and Chair of the Parish Council at Notre Dame Parish in Durham where she also chaired their very first Strawberry Festival.

Some 20 years ago Maryann turned her focus to Haiti by helping with fundraising events at Notre Dame Parish which supported the Diocesan efforts in Haiti.

Diocese Moves Ahead with V Encuentro

This excerpt from the opening reflection by Bishop Michael R. Cote , kicked off a day of presentations and discussions as the 80 delegates from 5 parishes with Hispanic ministries collaborated with priests, deacons and ministry directors from across the diocese.

The 5 parishes represented were: St. Mary of the Visitation in Clinton; St. Francis of Assisi in Middletown; St. Mary Star of the Sea in New 12 London; St. Mary in Norwich;

Iglesia del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus in Windham.

The V Encuentro or Fifth Meeting, is a national process of reflection, consultation and missionary activity, based on the Apostolic Letter of Pope Francis – The Joy of the Gospel. “Our Holy Father Pope Francis has invited us to take up our baptismal calling and become sharers of Jesus’ message—that we are loved by God unconditionally.

That’s the message -- We are loved

by God without conditions” said Bishop Cote.

The main goal of the V Encuentro is to discern ways in which the Church can better respond to the Hispanic/Latino presence and to strengthen the ways in which Hispanic faithful respond to their baptismal call to be Missionary Disciples, serving the entire Church.

This four-year process began at the parish level. The result of the parish level discernment, a 21 page booklet listing all of the recommendations, was used as a working document at the October 28th meeting held at the Holiday Inn, Norwich.

The purpose of this Diocesan Encuentro is to discern which of the recommendations presented by the parishes are most urgent, and to discern recommendations for implementation on the Regional level.

National and local speakers helped guide the participants in the final discernment process. Maria Isabel Barboza, the Catholic Relief Services Relationship Manager for the Northeast Region spoke about the process of taking the first step

in spreading the Joy of the Gospel.

Jessica Rodriguez from Iglesia del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, Windham gave a very moving talk on her experience and the importance of living your baptismal call by accompanying others.

Technology played an important role in the day. Thanks to translator Elkin Espitia and a special radio headset system, participants could hear all of the talks in their native language. Multiple computers and projectors beamed PowerPoint slides in two languages. Sister Leidy Castillo, using Facebook , live streamed the entire day to followers not in attendance. “I’m so happy with this event! It gives the Spanish people the opportunity to raise our voice and tell what is needed in our diocese and our region. Also I love to share with others live streaming on Facebook.”

She wasn’t the only one who saw the day as a success. Liza Roach, Director of Youth Ministries for the Diocese of Norwich offered her observations, “I thought today was a really great way to see the hard work that the delegates have done to infuse the needs of the Hispanic communities in Norwich and to really begin the process for the Diocese to meet their needs going

forward.”

Deacon Octavio Flores- St. Francis of Assisi Church in Middletown was, “ . . .very impressed and moved by the enthusiastic work of our Hispanic leaders -- under our Bishop -- to prepare a diocese that meets the spiritual needs of all of our members, Hispanic and non Hispanic.”

Near the end of the day, spirits were high as the entire group sang ¡Feliz Cumpleaños! (Happy Birthday) to Sister Mary Jude, Director of Hispanic Ministry.

The day ended with the commissioning of the delegates by Father Robert Washabaugh, Pastor of St. Mary in Norwich, “With this commissioning we are all sent forth to be messengers of the new life to which Jesus calls us. Go! Go in peace!”

In a recent adoption search, Cheryl reached out with a request to locate her birth sister whom she never met. Cheryl and her sister have the same biological parents, but Cheryl’s sister was placed up for adoption at birth. When Cheryl contacted Catholic Charities, it was her desire o locate her sister. After weeks of patience, Cheryl’s dream came true.

When Cheryl was notified about her sister being located, she responded with such enthusiasm; her overwhelming response was as follows:

hat do March Madness, Jenga and the gifts of the Holy Spirit have in common? They were all topics of conversation during a recent webinar sponsored by the Office of Faith Events entitled “Making Faith Fun.” The webinar was offered to anyone who had a computer and could join in from the comfort of their own home. “The Pope urged us to meet people where they are, and that is where most people are at the end of a long busy day – at home on their couch,” said Diocesan Young Adult and Youth Minister Liza Roach.

Adults, young adults and children find themselves overscheduled and overworked on a daily basis. The luxury of taking time out of your day to pray, reflect, meditate or read the scriptures has seemingly become a commodity few can afford.

The busyness of our world has made it difficult for people to seek spiritual and religious enrichment.

The thought of one more lecture, meeting or membership on one more committee is not only uninviting, it is now seen as more work.

So how do we begin to address and ultimately solve that problem?

Well one way is bringing spirituality and religion to people young and

old in their very own homes. This is achieved through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as through applications for phones, computers and other devices that share information such as the saint of the day, the biblical quote for the day or a daily quote from the Pope.

Merging our culture and its technology with our faith and religious traditions is the challenge Pope Francis speaks about when he encourages all of us to strike a balance between the secular and the religious worlds. “Do not be extraneous to this world; live within it like leaven in the dough. My invitation to you is simple but bold:”

As Christians we move forward, with the help of the Holy Spirit who gives us strength and technology that makes faith more accessible, to merge cultural norms and religious traditions. We hope to offer more of these programs in the future to provide people with convenient ways to access faith resources that will further enhance their spiritual lives.

And like all those that have come before us, we pray for the courage to endure whatever lies ahead. For St. Matthew tells us in Chapter 19, verse 26: “With God all things are possible.”

Ribbon Cutting to Mark Grand Opening of Two Lifesaving Human Milk Depots

A

grant distributed by the Thames Valley Council for Community Action has allowed the Norwich Diocese Catholic Charities offices in Norwich and New London to serve as drop-off locations for donations of mothers’ milk to the regional milk bank.

Mother’s Milk Bank Northeast, accredited by a national nonprofit breast milk donation program, will distribute the milk to neonatal intensive care units in hospitals across the region and to people who request donations through the Mother’s Milk Bank program.

The milk is given to premature infants as a supplement to their mothers’ milk in neonatal intensive care units or nurseries, or used in cases that mothers can’t breastfeed their children for medical reasons.

Human milk can help prevent premature infants from contracting diseases like necrotizing enterocolitis, which affects their intestines, if the infant’s mother can’t produce milk, said Ann Marie Lindquist, a spokeswoman for Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast.

Middlesex Hospital, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hospital of Central Connecticut, Manchester Memorial Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital all use donated milk from Mother’s Milk Bank Northeast, according to a news release.

“It could be a lifesaver, theoretically, for a baby that’s not getting what they need,” said Anissa Mrowka, a pregnancy educator with the Diocese’s branch of Catholic Charities.

monitor, will be the only available drop-off points in the region for breast milk — the closest other drop-off locations are in Guilford and Danbury.

Mothers may register with Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast, which will conduct a blood test, health screening and get a doctor’s approval before they register the person as a donor.

After they’re registered, donors can make an appointment to drop off their donations, which must total at least 100 ounces of milk at a time, to the Catholic Charities offices adjacent to the St. Mary Star of the Sea church on Huntington Street in New London or its office at 331 Main Street in Norwich.

Mrowka will immediately ship the donations to Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast, which will have the milk pasteurized and tested by an independent lab before dispensing it to hospitals or families.

Searching Your Grateful Heart

ll throughout the year, but especially at Thanksgiving, I am grateful for working with so many kind, hardworking colleagues who devote their days helping to enrich the lives of our family, friends and neighbors. I also thank God for allowing me into the lives of the many generous parishioners who share intimate details of their lives and finances with me while discussing their planned giving wishes.

While you begin to prepare for your Thanksgiving celebration and look on to the joy of Christmas, you may want to set aside a little time to search your heart and review how easy it is to make an end of the year gift to your church, school or the Diocese, joining with so many of your fellow parishioners in supporting the ministries of the Diocese to continue all their good works.

If it is in your heart and within your means, you might consider: Making a direct transfer (if you are 70 ½ years old) of up to $100,000 from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as your parish, without having to pay income taxes on the money. The law allowing this was made permanent by President Obama when he signed the PATH Act in December 2016.

Donating appreciated stock and securities. You will be entitled to a charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the donated stocks and securities, subject to limitation based upon your adjusted gross income. In addition, you will avoid income tax on the capital gain of those stocks and securities while supporting the mission of your favorite Diocesan organization.

Thinking about being creative with your giving. If you no longer need the proceeds of your life insurance policy because your children are grown, you can change the beneficiary or gift a paid-up policy to your favorite Diocesan organization.

Amending your Will to include your favorite Diocesan organization as a beneficiary. You may want to leave specific assets or a percentage of your Estate to your parish, school, or other Diocesan ministry.

Establishing an endowment within the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich to support your chosen Diocesan entity or contribute to one of the 25 existing endowment funds currently being managed by the Catholic Foundation.

The Advent Wreath Preparing for the Light The Advent wreath is part of our long-standing Catholic tradition of spiritual preparation for Christmas. After all, Christ is “the Light that came into the world” to dispel the darkness of sin and to radiate the truth and love of God (John 3:19-21).

The symbolism of the Advent wreath is beautiful. The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life.

Even these evergreens have a traditional meaning which can be adapted to our faith: The laurel signifies victory over persecution and suffering; pine, holly, and yew, immortality; and cedar, strength and healing.

Holly also has a special Christian symbolism: The prickly leaves remind us of the crown of thorns.

The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. Any pine cones, nuts, or seedpods used to decorate the wreath also symbolize life and resurrection. Altogether, the wreath of evergreens depicts the immortality of our soul and the new, everlasting life promised to us through Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who entered our world becoming true man and who was victorious

over sin and death through His own passion, death, and resurrection.

The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Three candles are purple and one is rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead. The light again signifies Christ, the Light of the world.

Since Advent is a time to stir-up our faith in the Lord, the wreath and prayer provide us a way to augment this special preparation for Christmas. Moreover, this good tradition helps us to remain vigilant in our homes and churches and not lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas.

A Resounding Celebration of Catholic Education 8th Annual Seton Scholarship Dinner

of Schools, who talked about the direction of the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Norwich. Henry shared, “Our schools now have enrollment management plans, and our principals have set enrollment management goals for their schools. We must look differently at how we communicate to each upcoming age group of parents.

We must celebrate our successes and promote them. We must articulate our plan for retention and recruitment.”

Following his report, Henry introduced Isabella Pero, an eighthgrade student at St. Joseph School, New London. Isabella was the winner of the essay contest and read her essay entitled, “Why Is My Catholic Education Important to Me?” Isabella’s life reflects many of the values children are taught in our Catholic schools and she chose to share this in her essay. Isabella stated, “My Catholic Education is currently affecting my family and my life. Whenever my family and I sit around the dinner table we talk about everything. The one thing we always talk about is our days. Either it is about a funny thing we witnessed, or it is about what we learned about that day. I love listening and telling my stories about God and my classes.

My parents always tell me that I teach them about so many new things each day.”

Joseph School, North Grosvenordale, was introduced by Theresa Pelletier, Assistant Principal at St. Joseph School, North Grosvenordale. Theresa revealed, “Since that December, nearly 18 years ago (when Sharon became Principal of St. Joseph School), she (Sharon) has dedicated her time and talents to keeping Catholic school education available to our local families... Looking for ways to provide income and to keep tuition affordable occupied a major portion of her time. She became a fund-raiser and a frugal spender. She’s written grants and has been able to help provide scholarships to students in need.”

Mr. William J. Russell, C.P.A. introduced Mrs. Robin Holtsclaw, representing Catholic Mutual Relief Society. Bill stated, “Robin is the face of Catholic Mutual in our Diocese and that is a face hallmarked by one specific attribute, which is accessibility... When something goes wrong, Robin is there... She is there to provide help, not only to process the claim, but to assist in any way she can to aid the affected school or office to get back to normal operations.

Robin has been a resource to the entire Diocese, but especially to the Principals in instituting policies and procedures to prevent loss, and more importantly to provide for the safety of our teachers and students.”

The third honoree of the evening, Mr. James Leone was introduced by Mrs. Marie Londregan, a teacher at St. Bernard School, Uncasville. Marie is not only a colleague of Jim’s, she is also his daughter. Marie shared with everyone, “I now understand that since he began his career in 1978, not only has my dad been that dedicated teacher and coach that everyone admires, he has been a true embodiment of what Catholic education stands for and means. I saw my dad do things large and small, like lead service trips to impoverished countries, guide students on numerous trips through the Vatican, coach athletes on how to both win and lose gracefully…. The large things that he does yearly and the small things that he does daily go beyond the duty of a dedicated teacher or coach; they truly exemplify his belief in promoting the values of Catholic education…. I have come to understand that for the last 39 years, not only has he been the teacher, coach, mentor and friend to his past and present students, he has also been a symbol for Catholic education...”

Bishop Cote presented each honoree with a 10” Waterford Lismore Bowl etched with his crest. The evening concluded with Bishop Cote offering the benediction and thanking all for attending and supporting Catholic education in the Diocese of Norwich.

Celebrating three individuals who have devoted much of their lives working in and supporting Catholic education in the Diocese. These recipients, Ms. Sharon A. Briere, Principal, St. Joseph School, North Grosvenordale, Mrs. Robin A. Holtsclaw, Claims/ Risk Manager representing Catholic Mutual Relief Society and Mr. James Leone, Theology Teacher, St. Bernard School, Uncasville received the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, D.D. Award for Contributions to Catholic Education in the Diocese of Norwich.

Monsignor Robert L. Brown, Chancellor, Diocese of Norwich, began the celebration by welcoming the nearly two hundred people, “As we begin this evening’s festivities, we turn our minds and hearts to God and invoke his blessing.” The Riverhouse was filled with what one could consider a chorus of angels – the St. Joseph School North Grosvenordale Choir, led by Richard Lepore, Choir Director. Their beautiful voices filled the room. The choir is a prime example of the impact a Catholic education can have on children.

The annual celebration is in thanksgiving to ALL who serve in our Military Forces, and in Memory of all who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

honor, commitment, and sacrifice. The virtue of humility has to be the one that is inculcated into the lives of every serviceman and woman.

We are all called to be humble servants to each other, just as Jesus humbled himself to serve others.”

The Mystic Highland Pipe Band, echoed through the Cathedral with their touching rendition of “Amazing Grace” The Young Marines, stood guard as the procession entered and left the Cathedral, and various other Veterans, Active and non active military personnel, as well as their families participated in the Mass.

Fundraising for St. Bernard School

Two separate fundraising events held in September raised a combined $15,767 for Saint Bernard School.

A first-ever Steak Night Dinner at the Birdseye Cafe in New London raised $4,690 for Saints Athletics.

Course and raised an additional $11,077, which will be split evenly between Saints Athletics and the Fund for Saint Bernard.

So what does a high school student experience, that leads to such positive outcomes? Using the Catholic Catechism, they are taught the beauty of the Catholic faith in fun and lively ways. They dive into Holy Scripture, and in the spring, we spend a semester on Theology of the Body.

The most important thing is to introduce them to and give them life-changing experiences with Jesus Christ by making the sacraments a priority and through frequent Eucharistic Adoration.

They experience Christ, get to know Christ and start or further a true personal relationship with Jesus Christ. So many young people walk away from the Church and her teachings, but it is much harder to walk away from a person. When you fall in love with someone, it is natural to want to please them and to

know more about them.

When asked what Life Teen has done for them, our current teens responded, “I believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist”; “ I understand my faith better”; “I have come to know Jesus better”; “I gained a new respect for the Mass”; “I now like going to confession”; “I get along better with my parents”; “I can hear God’s voice speaking to me”; “I have friends that share my belief”; “I started reading the Bible every day”; “I have a prayer partner who holds me accountable”; “I never had anyone in my life who prayed for me and now I do”; “I would be depressed, I would be sinning like crazy, I am spiritually alive”.

The students weren’t the only ones with an opinion. Here are a few quotes from our current parents. “Adoration has been a powerful influence in my teens life”; “it changed his life”; “my teen

wants to play an active role in the life of the church”; “my teen has challenged me to grow in my faith”; “it has given my teen the type of friends that I always prayed that he would have”; “my whole family is healthier”; “without Life Teen my teen would have gotten in trouble.”

Because we at Saint Andrews believe so strongly in the mission of Life Teen and have been blessed in so many ways, our Life Teen community is making available, the cost of a year’s subscription ($995) to start Two New Life Teen programs at other parishes in our diocese. Life Teen international has also generously promised to pay for the flight, lodging and training conference for a priest from the parish and their youth minister to learn how to implement Life Teen in their parish. Our Lady of Lourdes in Gales Ferry is receiving one of the subscriptions and training. A second parish has not been chosen.

Rather than being disappointed by the decrease in numbers of our youth attending church and youth ministry programs, let us instead use this as our motivation to support youth ministry programs everywhere. At St. Andrew we have seen what happens when a parish says yes to active youth ministry.

Our prayer is that many more parishes will do the same.

hat does youth ministry look like to you? Is it pizza and good times?

Sometimes. However, when done correctly, it can be so much more. In April of 2002, Saint Andrew Parish in Colchester implemented Life Teen. The mission of Life Teen is to Lead Teens Closer to Christ. That is precisely what Life Teen has done for us over the past 15 years.

During these years, we have seen how the seeds of faith that were planted in our teens have taken root and blossomed. Many alumni are active in and have even started college ministries. Two alumni have become presidents of their campus Newman Centers.

Several college graduates are doing missionary work, some in 3rd world nations, while others have become fulltime Youth ministers with one becoming a Diocesan director of youth ministry. Many have become Catholic speakers, religion teachers.

Others are discerning religious vocations. One is presently in his third year of seminary. The experience they had while at Saint Andrews Life Teen has shaped them as core members in other parishes, changing the face and understanding of the vocation of marriage.

“What faithful Catholics want is for their children to continue to love Jesus and stay actively involved in their Catholic Faith.”, said an alumni parent. Father Mark Masnicki, Pastor of St. Andrews Parish said, “All the ministries of the church are important, but Life

By Ellen O’Shaughnessy embers of five area Catholic churches came together on Sunday, October 1, to enact a Living Rosary in honor of the hundredth anniversary of the Miracle of Fatima, also known as the Miracle of the Sun. More than eighty people from all five churches took part in the outdoor rosary recitation and procession, which took place under an intense, cloudless blue sky on the lawn at St. Luke’s Church in Ellington. Many more came to observe the event and attend the Mass and the reception which followed.

Each person in the Rosary chain began a prayer of the Rosary, and everyone responded with the conclusion of each prayer, while members of the Knights of Columbus and other groups lead the procession.

At the conclusion of the Mass, the Rosary and Cross used in the procession were placed on display at the front of St. Luke’s Church, to remain throughout the month of October as a reminder to pray the Rosary.

King’s example of non-violent protest against social injustices, particularly on the 60th anniversary of his essay “Nonviolence and Social Justice.”

They called for 2018 to be declared the year of Martin Luther King Jr. In his 1957 essay, King wrote that “In struggling for human dignity, the oppressed people of the world must not allow themselves to become bitter or indulge in hate campaigns. Along the way of life, someone must have sense enough and morality enough to cut off the chain of hate. This can only be done by projecting the ethics of love to the center of our lives.”

On August 23, the U.S. bishops formed an Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism and named Bishop Murry as the chair.

“As always in these situations, one finds it hard to say things that don’t sound like clichés,” Bishop Murry said.

“We have too much violence in our society, and everything we say is beginning to seem tired and repetitive,” he said. And although all must commit to non-violence, he said,

“something deeper” is needed.

“That commitment requires true conversion. Each of us needs to restore the love that comes with true friendship,” he said. “A society should be a community. And unless we recover the sense that we are all in this together, because we are one family, I fear we will not be able to stop the violence trends we are facing.”

Leaders also spoke about the need to address systemic racism in U.S. society. Bishop Murry thanked the

Knights of Columbus for their efforts in this initiative, saying they “have been a consistent voice for racial equality since they were created.”

“Today as then, we stand united in the principle that all are created equal, and we reiterate the words of Pope Francis last month, calling for the rejection of violence, all violence, in political life,” he said.

“We believe the way of nonviolence is as relevant today as ever.”

CNA/EWTN News Washington D.C. fter recent violent protests and the deadliest mass shooting recorded in U.S. history, Christian leaders invoked Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as they condemned racism and violence.

“As a society, we need to stop making excuses and commit ourselves to a movement for nonviolence that involves every one of us,” Bishop George Murry of Youngstown, chair of the U.S. Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism, stated Monday.

The gathering of Christian leaders took place Oct. 2 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, was present, along with Bishop Murry; Edwin Bass, a leader of the Church of God in Christ, and Eugene Rivers III, founder of the W.J. Seymour Institute for Black Church and Policy Studies and a Pentecostal minister.

“The death of a loved one is always difficult for us, but the loss of a child is the most difficult,” said Father Steven Gulino in a poignant homily given at the annual Diocesan Mass of Remembrance.

“But, in our grief we can approach the Lord with the greatest of confidence because we know of the tremendous love God has for us, especially for children.

Citing passages from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke that referenced Jesus’ tender love for children, Father Gulino reassured parents and family members that their children who have died are with the Lord. “We see the great love Jesus has for children and He wants all of them to be with Him,” he said. “Children and those who are spiritually child-like, not childish, but child-like in their trust and simplicity, will be the greatest in Heaven.”

The Annual Diocesan Mass Father Stephen S. Gulino, Parochial of Remembrance took place at Vicar of Saint Catherine of Siena and the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Saint Mary of the Rosary churches, Norwich on October 10. The Mass, delivers a moving and uplifting homily. which seeks to bring healing and

hope to families, is an opportunity for parents and loved ones to honor and remember children who have died especially pre-born children lost from miscarriages, stillbirths or abortions.

Prior to Mass, those in attendance had the opportunity to write the names of children, prayers or words of love in a Book of Remembrance, which was brought to the Altar with the Offertory Gifts. One woman said she welcomed the opportunity to include the name of her preborn child in the book. She called it a moving gesture of compassion and was comforted in knowing the church has not forgotten her or her child. Those attending the Mass also received a bookmark with this prayer inscribed on it: “May my child who was to be laugh, play and be joyful in the loving strength of God’s embrace.

Father Gulino, parochial vicar at St. Mary’s, Jewett City; St. Catherine of Siena, Preston; and St. Thomas, Voluntown, quoted from the funeral liturgy that says for the deceased, “Life has changed, not ended.”

Noting that, he consoled parents and family members by saying their

children who have died, “Know the love you have for them.”

Reading a liturgical prayer he said, “Lord Jesus, Your mother stood grieving at the foot of the Cross.

Look kindly on these parents who have suffered the loss of their child.

Listen to the prayers of Mary on their behalf, that their faith may be strong like hers and find its promised reward.” That reward, Father Gulino said, is eternal life.

Bishop Michael R. Cote was the principal celebrant of the Mass and warmly welcomed those in attendance reminding them that scripture tells us, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Bishop Cote was joined on the altar by eight diocesan priests and two permanent deacons.

Father Ray Introvigne, director of the Diocesan Spiritual Renewal Services and one of the concelebrants, called the Mass, “A beautiful expression of God’s love and support for those who have suffered a loss.”

Following the Mass there was an opportunity for families to enjoy fellowship with one another at a reception in the Church hall.
