Unlike other luxury guest ranches in the Rocky Mountain West, The Lodge at Blue Sky’s architecture eschews rustic log cabins for a contemporary aesthetic that mirrors the majesty of the surrounding mountainscape. A dramatic canyon is the focal point around which the entire resort was developed, connecting guests to the natural environment. All but 5 suites are west-facing, offering guests showstopping views of the sun setting over Alexander Canyon — while 5 freestanding Creek Houses are nestled

into a private aspen grove situated along the tranquil banks of Alexander Creek, which flows through Blue Sky’s property. 22 Earth Suites are built into the natural contours of the lush hillside and look as though they are growing out of the land itself. Living grass roofs that are sewn with native Utah grasses and wildflowers further enhance this “one with nature” effect. The aptly named Edge Spa also has a living roof, and is situated on a precipice overlooking Alexander Creek.

THE LINDIS

Ahuriri Valley, New Zealand

Near the bottom of the habitable world is the pristine Ahuriri Valley. Carved over millions of years by the once fierce glacial waters of the Ahuriri River, the valley is a tranquil, yet rugged slice of paradise in New Zealand’s South – where the quiet of nature becomes amplified and where connecting to the land seems to happen simply by default. Resting almost imperceptibly on the floor of the valley is The Lindis, a truly unique luxury lodge. With an elegant wooden slatted roof paying direct homage to the contours of the earth below, the design of the building creates an undeniable sense of harmony between structure and land. A harmony that has diffused itself through everything that is done at The Lindis. The interior of the building features Spotted Gum wooden panelling and imposing Bluestone masonry throughout, reflecting the tones and geography of the outside environment – with sweeping windows blurring the barriers between the inside and outside worlds.

ONE&ONLY MANDARINA

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico

Nestled amidst rich biodiversity, great measures were taken when designing the eco-conscious retreat to ensure the pristine Riviera Nayarit remained untouched. From the Cora ruins to our majestic Higuera trees and the ancient rituals - the energy, joy and colour of Mexico’s culture is celebrated throughout One&Only Mandarina. The resort’s made-in-Mexico accents begin in the reception, which is strikingly adorned with a custom-made, cast-bronze gong by the Grez family, based in Hidalgo. This creative clan has been fashioning bells and religious articles for cathedrals throughout the Mexican Republic for more than 60 years. Constructed with clay, wood, precious metal and stone, all indigenous to the region, the resort’s villas are private sanctuaries, grounded in the earthen spirit of the local Cora and Huichol cultures. Within the resort design pieces, furniture and furnishings showcase artisanal makers and local creators. Many of the featured artists and designers fuse traditional, time-honoured techniques with the latest technology and a modern outlook.

HERDADE DA MALHADINHA NOVA

Baixo Alentejo, Portugal

Located in the heart of the Baixo Alentejo region of Portugal, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is perfectly integrated into the landscape. A synergy between design and tradition combines to showcase the history of this family-style project built around wine. The rural inspiration is evident in objects designed by artisans – the handmade chairs, the use of willow and stones collected on the estate, and the local regional marble – which coexist alongside designer objects by Olaio, Vista Alegre, Marcel Wanders and Alvar Aalto – not to mention the Agape bathroom furniture and bathtubs, and lighting by Philippe Starck, Charles & Ray Eames and Mariano Fortuny. This is a place of privacy, exclusivity, and luxury. The 2-suite, Casa Das Artes e Oficios villa pays living homage to what was once a communal space where clothes were washed and bread baked. Each decor item is a work of art. Almost every object can be bought and each relates to a memory connecting the arts with the nearby river. The style and design are in perfect harmony with an unmatched view of the Alentejo plains.

PAL AZZO MARGHERITA

Puglia, Italy

Located in the untouched Basilicata region, Palazzo Margherita is a true 19th century neoclassical/composite palazzo transformed into an intimate luxury hotel thanks to director F.F. Coppola. The Palazzo offers a luxurious yet authentic Italian experience, with vast bedrooms, ornate reception rooms and an inner courtyard opening onto a preserved private garden. The Garden is the Palazzo’s most magical feature and extends through a network of

secret paths and four old palms that are reminders of the African colonies from the beginning of the 20th century. In keeping with Coppola’s desire to create an environment his children would want to return to, the entire family collaborated with acclaimed French designer Jacques Grange, with special advice from Oscar-winner set designer Dean Tavoularis and the valuable craftsmanship provided by painters and artisans in the region.

Water pours from an infinity pool on one level to another pool on another level through an extravagant waterfall. And lounge areas are literally carved out of the cliffs to create spaces to relax in the Greek sun. A picturesque glass elevator connects the levels with a waterfront terrace and dock. Cape Town, South Africa

The Silo Hotel is an architectural and design masterpiece that was built in a converted grain silo building towering above Zeitz MOCAA – Africa’s largest contemporary art museum. Owner Liz Biden worked closely with Heatherwick Studios on the design. Liz was responsible for the design of the interior of the hotel, while Heatherwick Studio’s envisioned the exterior shell comprising of 82 distinctive pillowedglass windows that perfectly frame Cape Town’s natural beauty. Heatherwick’s original plan had no opening windows, which Liz thought were critical for her guests. Together they found a way to incorporate them into the design - and now each of the 28 rooms in the hotel has a scenic balcony. Liz’s in-room interiors each take their own unique character. From Ardmore fabrics to over 300 pieces of contemporary African art, Liz has filled The Silo Hotel with colourful and eclectic pieces that promise to surprise, delight and warmly welcome any visitor.

St. Barts, Caribbean

Art teaches us to see the world excluding all that is superfluous — it’s an expression that allows us to discover infinite universes and to write wonderful stories. From acrylics and diptychs to watercolours and sculptures, art serves as the very heart of Villa NEO. The owners carefully curated their collection to represent local talent and environments and each piece serves a purpose in its designated area of the house. From the entrance, guests will be welcomed by a striking art installation

of a woman, Cyané. Created from polished stainless steel nuts which seem to fly backwards, giving it a strong effect of movement, Cyané represents the goddess of the wind. She is not in the wind. She is the wind. The artist specifically chose stainless steel as it is widely used in the construction and development of villas in St Barths. Whether guests are admirers or collectors, there is art throughout the villa that speaks to all.
