As double Olympic Champion, three-times World Champion, twice European Champion and multiple World Cup gold- medal winner, Helen Glover is one of the most decorated athletes in the GB Rowing Team. Not only that, she’s fast gaining a reputation as one of the world’s great all-round athletes, having excelled in every sport she has turned her hand to from a young age. Where did your desire for an active lifestyle come from? I guess I was really fortunate that my family life was just full of activity and whether that was playing sport after school at clubs, or whether it was being dragged (no matter what the weather) by my parents for clifftop walks, it was just a really big part of our lifestyle.

What does being active mean to you? This sounds romantic but it is amazing, it sets you up for a life where you just love doing things, you love getting involved and being active. The way it makes you feel I think is really special and I’m a big advocate for that. Yes, it’s given me the amazing experience of going to the Olympic Games but it’s also given me the opportunity to be able to travel to places like this and see things and do things and have a life that I feel is just that little bit more fulfilled.

It can be daunting getting into a new sport or activity. What’s the best way to start? I think if you’re right at the start of your fitness journey, even though it feels to you the most daunting, I actually think it’s the most exciting, because from that place where you’re looking to get active, that’s where your life is the most transformed. Maybe go open water swimming or hire a paddle board. Do something that’s just a little bit different and you’ll find the thing that you love. Think, how could I feel tomorrow when I’ve tried it, in a week when I’ve sort of got used to it and in a year where I am this person who’s experienced something new and now has adopted it as part of my lifestyle? I think it’s a really exciting place to be.

That’s why I was delighted to act as tour guide to “Lavender and Lovage” food blogger, Karen Booth, on her recent trip here.

Taking into account Karen’s interest in food, we started our trip at the Olhão fish market, open six mornings a week. Just a short drive from Faro, Olhão is the largest fishing port in the Algarve and the fish market reflects this with stunning choice and display. Once famous for its fishing and canning of tuna and sardines, this charming seaside town, set by the estuary of the Ria Formosa, is also the gateway to some of the most beautiful islands in Portugal, reached on one of the many regular boat trips departing from the sea front. Walking around the narrow streets of Moorish architecture, we followed the “tales path”, a selfguided walking tour that connects five of the main squares in the historical area. Each square has been given an original tale, perpetuating the town’s collective memory and a way to learn more about the past and its people. We had lunch at Restaurante O Bote, one of the many facing the Ria Formosa, and enjoyed the locally caught fresh sea offerings with monkfish and prawn skewers and the traditional “papas com conquilhas” (polenta with clams flavoured with garlic and coriander) - just like the ones my great-grandmother used to give me as a child.

What is your background? Although Dutch, I have lived in the Algarve for the past twenty years. My father was a builder and my mother an interior designer. Initially, I worked in hotel management, training at The Ritz in London and I also worked in Paris. I got into interior design

Tell me more about your design influences and some of the suppliers you chose and why? The new Clubhouse area is the heart and soul of the resort, blending contemporary design with a Portuguese twist. The elegant, welcoming space has a warmth to it, a comfortable, relaxing, home from home feel with a sophisticated atmosphere that flows seamlessly from inside to out. Great thought was required to create a design that works for all seasons, whatever the weather. Crittall doors and windows are in abundance and have been cleverly designed and finished with a brushed copper effect to reflect the traditional Portuguese “Cataplana”, an item of cookware used to prepare Portuguese seafood dishes. Handmade pendant lights using linked copper rings to emulate bee hives hang throughout VIVO restaurant and have been designed to reflect the local area’s sizeable production of honey. Guests will also notice on entering the Clubhouse that they pass over a large rug, handmade in 26

Northern Portugal, the design of which symbolises Portuguese lace, one of the country’s oldest and most intricate handcrafts. A green palette runs throughout the Clubhouse to reflect the lush, landscaped gardens and neighbouring golf courses that surround the resort. Green hues are complimented with dusky pinks, oatmeal and striking peacock blue furniture with a variety of textures and fabrics used throughout, also reflected in the artwork. The carpet, wallpaper and panels throughout the new Club Room evoke a sense of local heritage and are inspired by “azulejos”, traditional Portuguese

Estávamos de visita ao Algarve para experimentar o programa Vida Ativa do Four Seasons Fairways, tendo tido por vezes a companhia da convidada especial Helen Glover. Helen é bicampeã olímpica, remadora de craveira mundial e uma das melhores atletas femininas do mundo. Tivemos oportunidade de andar de caiaque com ela, conversar sobre a sua carreira desportiva e saber tudo sobre o tipo de preparação física necessária para se alcançar a excelência olímpica. Helen deu-nos dicas sobre como nos manter em forma com os nossos horários atarefados, e o nosso filho mais novo ficou cheio de orgulho ao conseguir acompanhá-la numa corrida matinal de 8km. Insider knowledge Discover the easternmost lagoons of the Ria Formosa at Cacela Velha The tiny village of Cacela Velha between Monte Gordo and Tavira feels like stepping back in time. Unspoilt by modern development, the pretty calçadas, cobbled streets and painted houses are pristine. Best of all is its fortified location, high above the beach and lagoons of the Ria Formosa. The square has a pretty church and fountain and the views from the 18th-century fortress are spectacular. It’s the sort of place where you see the local policeman sharing a morning coffee and medronho with locals in the café. Yes, really! Incidentally, the restaurant in the village, Casa Velha, is one of our marketing manager Angela Viegas’s favourite lunch spots, if you like authentic Portuguese food, sardines, long clams (canivetes) and other local delicacies. Off the beaten track, the village rarely gets busy apart from in July when it holds a four-day Moorish Nights Festival, “Noites da Moura Encantada”, complete with temporary souk and Arabic street food and music.

The beach below the village has been rated as one of the best in the world, and it would be hard not to agree. To get to it, follow signs to “Fábrica”, just west of the village, around 1km downhill, or walk the footpath descending from the village. From here, small boats can take you over to the beach (daily in summer, but only during good weather in the rest of the year). Golfers can combine a trip to Cacela Velha with a game at nearby Quinta de Cima or Quinta da Ria, or you could just go for a meandering drive around the area. Portuguese wine, “What’s not to love?” says Four Seasons Fairways Sommelier, Miguel Reis

For a small country, Portugal has plenty of different grape varieties – at least 200. During the 2,000 years or so that wine has been produced here, people have had lots of time to introduce grapes from different regions. In addition, we have a wide range of growing conditions from the cold mountains in the north to the hot coastal region of the Algarve. There are five types of terroir (environmental factors) sun, soil, climate, air temperature and wind, which can affect the characteristic taste and flavour of the wines. Over the last 15 years, Portuguese wine has improved tremendously in terms of quality. Before then, farmers took their grapes or wine to the local co-operative where it was blended, bottled and sold on their behalf. Then the producers started doing it for themselves. A big boost for Portuguese wine in terms of recognition came in 2011. It was the vintage of the century, with perfect growing conditions and no rot or fungus. That year put Portugal firmly on the map.

I believe that our best reds are produced in central Portugal in the Dão region. The specific climate here in Serra da Estrela creates a riper fruit. This produces a smooth velvety wine that is both lower in alcohol and with a purity of fruit flavour. My favourite wine from this region is Druída, and I also like MOB lote 3. For me, the best whites come from the coastal areas in the north of Portugal, where it’s colder. The sea breezes and the abundance of rain give freshness to the taste. A good example is Quinta do Regueiro, Alvarinho grape variety. Vinho Verde, so called not because the grapes are green or young but because of the terroir, is the region where the grapes are grown and is known for its herbs, rain and rivers. You find here a variety of lesser-known grapes, but with enormous potential, such as Avesso and Loureiro, which you can taste in Muros Antigos and Casa de Santa Eulália, respectively. An up-and-coming region is the Bairrada on the North West coast. This is outstanding for sparkling

As brisas marinhas e a abundância de chuva conferem-lhes frescura. Um bom exemplo é a Quinta do Regueiro, da variedade alvarinha. A região do vinho verde, assim denominado não por as uvas serem verdes ou novas e sim pelo terroir, é a região onde estas uvas são cultivadas, sendo conhecida pelas suas ervas, chuva e rios. Encontram-se aí algumas castas menos conhecidas, mas com um potencial enorme, como a Avesso e a Loureiro, que podem respetivamente provar no Muros Antigos e no Casa de Santa Eulália. A região da Bairrada e da costa oeste está a ganhar terreno. É excelente na produção de vinhos espumantes. O solo é igual ao da região de Champagne, na França. É pobre em nutrientes e rico em cálcio. Experimentem o Kompassus Vintage Rosé, um excelente exemplo do nosso vinho espumante.

Castro Marim well worth the “drive”

For a golf course with bags of personality, visit Castro Marim at the eastern end of the Algarve. With far-reaching views of the Guadiana River it’s worth making the easy 45-minute drive along the quietest stretch of the A22 motorway. “Many of our members love a day out at Castro Marim as it’s great value and not as busy as some other courses”, says Carla from the golf shop. “Some people combine it with a trip to Castro Marim town with its medieval castle, the nearby Sapal nature reserve or the stylish town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the river.”

Castro Marim is a well-designed course comprising three nine-holes: The Grouse, Guadiana and Atlantic. The courses are situated in a wilder setting than the manicured environment of Quinta do Lago but are maintained to the same high standards. The Grouse is the newest of the three and most open. There are more trees on the Guadiana and Atlantic and these courses are a bit tighter. The Bristol-based designer, Terry Murray, made clever use of the existing contours of the land. This means exciting dog-legs, undulations and some holes fashioned

O preço é excelente e nunca está tão cheio como alguns dos outros campos” diz Carla, da loja do golfe. “Alguns combinam o jogo com um passeio à vila, com o seu castelo medieval, à vizinha reserva natural ou à elegante cidade de Vila Real de Santo António, situada na foz do rio.” Castro Marim é um circuito bem desenhado com três campos de nove buracos: o Grouse, o Guadiana e o Altântico. Os campos estão situados num contexto mais selvagem do que o imaculado cenário da Quinta do Lago, mantendo, no entanto, o mesmo elevado padrão de excelência. O Grouse é o mais novo dos três e também o mais aberto. Há mais tees no Guadiana e no Atlântico, que são também um pouco mais estreitos. Terry Murray, o seu criador, sediado em Bristol, usou de forma inteligente os pré-existentes relevos do terreno. A predileção por doces foi igualmente adotada, como testemunham as frutas cristalizadas e os inúmeros doces e bolos de amêndoa gemas e mel. Graças aos invasores, a cultura de amêndoas, damascos, alfarrobas, figos, limões, azeitonas, laranjas, romãs e arroz intensificou-se, bem como a de muitos outros produtos hortícolas. Construídos por vezes sobre fundações romanas, os sistemas de irrigação existentes foram então melhorados com a introdução de moinhos, azenhas (do árabe al-saniyah) e noras (do árabe na’urah). A arquitetura tradicional algarvia também testemunha a herança islâmica. Em Loulé, parte das muralhas do séc. XII pode ainda ser encontrada. E as zonas mais antigas de Olhão e Tavira, com as suas ruas estreitas ao estilo de um kasbah e chaminés de estilo “mouro”, assemelham-se mais a terras do norte de África do que da Europa. Originally from Angola, Cláudio Guerreiro’s training was in management and new technologies. But after taking a temporary summer job here in 1994 as a pool attendant, Cláudio joined the maintenance team and worked his way up. 25 years later, he manages an on-site team of 28 people as our Maintenance Manager.

Nascido em Angola, Cláudio Guerreiro formou-se inicialmente em gestão e novas tecnologias. Mas assim que, em 1994, arranjou aqui no Fairways um emprego de verão a limpar piscinas, integrou a equipa de manutenção, tendo subido a pulso desde então. Vinte e cinco anos depois, lidera uma equipa permanente de vinte e oito pessoas, sendo hoje o nosso Diretor de Manutenção.

Anything to do with building and equipment repairs, painting, pools and gardens is under Cláudio’s remit, as well as villa refurbishments. “Currently my busiest time of the year is the winter, when we transform the villas that are still in the old style to our new, modern look”, he says. “The work in planning and managing the staff and contractors involved, as well as all the general maintenance, is my biggest challenge. In the summer, the nature of Cláudio’s work changes and is more about actively managing day to day problems and questions encountered by the resort’s visitors. “The best part of my job is coming up with solutions to make our clients happy,” says Cláudio. “I get a lot of pleasure from that.”

Tudo o que estiver relacionado com edifícios e reparações de equipamentos, pinturas, piscinas e jardins está agora sob a sua alçada, tal como a remodelação das vilas. “Para mim, hoje em dia, o inverno é a altura mais agitada do ano, quando renovamos as vilas que ainda estão com a decoração antiga”, afirma. “Além da manutenção geral do empreendimento, o crescente trabalho de planeamento e coordenação de todo o pessoal e empresas envolvidas na remodelação é sem dúvida o meu maior desafio.” No verão, a natureza do trabalho de Cláudio muda, focandose mais na resolução ativa de problemas diários e questões levantadas pelo crescente número de visitantes do empreendimento. “O aspeto mais gratificante do meu trabalho é encontrar soluções que satisfaçam os nossos clientes”, diz Cláudio. “É algo que me dá um enorme prazer.”

Mário Pinto formou-se no Instituto de Arte e Design de Lisboa mas depressa compreendeu que a hospitalidade, e sobretudo a área do housekeeping era a sua vocação. O Mário ingressou nas nossas fileiras há quase três anos como gerente, sendo então responsável por uma equipa de 50 indivíduos, tendo ocupado previamente uma série de cargos de topo na área em vários hotéis de renome como o Relais & Chateaux. Uma das melhorias implementadas por Mário assim que integrou a equipa foi mudar os produtos de limpeza e lavandaria por outros fabricados com químicos ecologicamente seguros. Introduziu igualmente um serviço de Mário Pinto graduated from the Institute of Art and Design in Lisbon but soon realised that hospitality and, in particular, housekeeping was his true vocation. Mário joined as Executive Housekeeper, responsible for 50 staff, almost three years’ ago following a range of senior housekeeping positions for prestigious hotel groups like Relais & Chateaux.

One of the improvements Mário made when he joined was to change the cleaning and laundry materials to those made with 100% ecologically safe chemicals. He has also introduced a late maid service, where someone is available until midnight, to help with any housekeeping issues that might crop up. “Many members come to Fairways for long periods of time and have done so for many years. They know how they like their villa set up”, he says. “Luckily I have a great team of people, many of whom have also been here a long time. They remember the little details that make our members feel special.”
