THE

KD RIG

THE KD RIG HAS GROWN TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY USED PRESENTATIONS BY CARP ANGLERS ACROSS EUROPE ESPECIALLY WHEN USING CRITICALLY BALANCED HOOKBAITS... The KD Rig, is named after top Essex carper Kenny Dorset who used the rig with great success for many years. At first glance you would be forgiven for thinking the rig is simply a Knotless Knot, however, there is one slight difference, which has a massive impact on just how effective the presentation is. In order for the rig to work as intended the Hair position is vital as it needs to exit the shank of the hook very close to the eye. The reason for this is that by having a critically balanced hookbait close to the eye it makes the point relatively heavy, which means the point sits in the perfect hooking position (hanging down) ready to catch hold in the bottom lip when a carp tries to eject the rig. As we have mentioned the KD is at its best when the hookbait on the Hair is critically balanced. There a number of ways of creating a critically balanced hookbait, you can for example create a snowman from a bottom bait and pop-up, use a pop-up with a split shot placed on the Hair, use a specially rolled ‘wafter’ hookbait or add a small amount of cork stick to a bottom bait to give it buoyancy.

THE

MULTI RIG R IG

DESIGNED BY CARPWORLD MAGAZINE’S RIG EXPERT, MIKE KAVANAGH, THIS EFFECTIVE POP-UP PRESENTATION HAS A NUMBER OF BENEFITS...

The Multi-Rig has become a favourite with anglers across Europe due not only to its effectiveness at hooking carp but also due to its easiness to tie and use. The rig basically involves tying a large loop at one end of the hooklink which you then use to attach your hook loop-to-loop style. This loop serves three very big advantages, firstly it enables you to change your hook without cutting and re-tying a rig (perfect if the point burrs over or you want to change size or pattern), secondly by doubling the hooklink up it creates a very stiff section, which makes it much harder for a carp to eject, and finally this doubled over section acts like an extension to the shank of the hook and leaves the eye at a nice aggressive angle, which again aids its anti-eject properties. Although you could fish this rig with a bottom bait to some degree of success it is designed to be fished with a pop-up hookbait predominately and this is when it is at its most effective.

6

Fox Rig Guide 2014_1-13.indd 6

HERE ARE THE BITS TO TIE THE RIG, WE RECOMMEND A SEMI-STIFF HOOKLINK AND A HOOK WITH AN OUT-TURNED EYE.

HOW TO CONSTRUCT THE MULTI-RIG 1

Start by cutting 10ins of Coretex Matt and tie a 2ins long loop in one end.

5

Attach your chosen pop-up hookbait to the rig ring, using the ‘blob’ method.

The Multi-Rig proved the downfall of this beast.

2

Pass the loop through the front of the eye a size 5 SR hook as illustrated.

6

Mould some Power Grip putty around the loop knot to counter balance the bait.

3

Now slide a Medium Kuro Rig Ring onto the looped section, like so.

7

Add a couple of small blobs of putty to the hooklink and tie a loop in the end.

4

Pass the hook through the loop and pull the loop into the position shown.

8

The finished rig should look like this with a slight curve in the loop when complete.

TOP

The Multi-Rig can be used with bottom baits too should you wish to be different.

SHOT ON THE

HOOK RIG

THIS TIDY LITTLE RIG IS A FIRM FAVOURITE WITH FOX PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT GURU’S SHAUN MCSPADDEN AND SCOTT DAY WHEN THEY ARE FISHING SHORT BRAIDED RIGS INSIDE SOLID PVA BAGS... As mentioned our very own Shaun McSpadden and Scott Day like to fish this presentation on braided hooklinks in conjunction with the Rapide PVA system, however you can also use it with a coated braid hooklink too with a small mesh bag should you wish. However, for the purpose of this section, we are going to concentrate on using it inside a solid PVA bag.

The rig itself is very easy to tie and works very well when you place a Line Aligna Adaptor over the eye of the hook, as this helps the rig to turn and grab hold of the bottom lip much faster. You need to use a buoyant pop-up hookbait on the Hair and then instead of placing a counter weight or split shot on the hooklink like you normally would with a pop-up you actually, as the name suggests, place it on the hook via a small piece of braid (see sequence). This split shot on the hook ensures that your pop-up hookbait only sits a little way off of the lakebed, which means when your PVA bag of pellets melts you are left with your hookbait sat at the top of the pile – like a cherry on a cake! Once a fish comes along and sucks in the contents of the bag, your rig will fly into its mouth and then the Line Aligna Adaptor will cause the hook to turn and grab hold – in fact the shot will make your hook point heavy, which will help the hook to turn and drive the point down into the bottom lip.

HEAVY BOTTOM

BAIT RIG

CRITICALLY BALANCED WAFTERS AND SNOWMEN RIGS ALONG WITH POP-UP PRESENTATIONS SEEM TO BE ALL THE RAGE THESE DAYS SO TRYING SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT CAN SOMETIMES GIVE YOU AN EDGE... It’s very rare that you see anglers fishing with heavy bottom baits on the Hair in the modern world of carp fishing. However, there can be a couple of really distinct advantages of using a heavy bottom bait and a presentation such as a double 18mm bottom bait rig is the perfect type to give you an edge! This rig basically involves utilising the mechanics of the Blow Back Rig in that you fish a rig ring attached to the Hair that can slide up and down on the shank of the hook. In addition to fishing the rig ‘blow back style’ we also recommend adding a Trans Khaki Line Aligna Adaptor to the eye of the hook to help it turn and grab hold when the rig is in the carp’s mouth. The advantages of using this rig over the more popular balanced hookbaits are that firstly the carp are not so used to picking up the heavier baits and therefore can often treat them with less caution. In addition the weight of the baits can actually help to drive the hook home as a carp tries to eject them (this is where the blow back ring comes into its own) this is because as it tries to blow the rig out of its mouth the too heavy baits will slide down the shank and out of the carp’s mouth causing the hook to turn and the point to grab hold in the process. As you are using heavy bottom baits they will sink through the water quickly so we recommend using a stiff hooklink material such as the Camotex Stiff as this will help to keep your hookbaits separated from the lead as they land on the lakebed.

HOW TO TIE A HEAVY BOTTOM BAIT RIG 1

Start by cutting 16ins of Camotex Stiff hooklink and strip 5ins of outer coating.

5

Thread the ring onto a Kuro S1 size 4 hook and secure the hook with a Knotless Knot.

2

8

Add a couple of blobs of Power Grip putty along the rig and it is finished!

This lovely common failed to eject a heavy bottom bait rig effectively!

This rig seems particularly effective when fished over a bed of matching boilies.

THE MAGGOT

CLIP RIG R IG

MAGGOTS ARE WITHOUT DOUBT ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE CARP-CATCHING BAITS AVAILABLE AND HERE WE SHOW YOU A GREAT RIG FOR PRESENTING THEM... There is no way of knowing for sure why maggots are as effective as they are. There are several theories about digestibility, mimicking natural food items, the fact they are alive and moving but until carp learn to speak and tell us why we can only guess. One of the obvious downsides to using maggots is that they are very attractive to fish of all sizes and species and therefore during certain months of the year it can be impossible to use them as hookbaits as the smaller species eat them first. However, when the water temperatures cool down in winter and on lakes where no ‘nuisance’ species are present the humble maggot really can be better than any other bait. The easiest and most effective to fish with maggots is just like you would a boilie or plastic corn, on a nice simple Hair setup, however instead of tying a loop in the Hair to thread the hookbait onto we simply tie a Fox Maggot Clip which we can then thread maggots onto to create a little ball of maggots. The rig is then finished off by hooking on a PVA mesh bag of maggots prior to casting out and the result is a highly effective and practically irresistible presentation.

THE COMPONENTS YOU WILL NEED TO CONSTRUCT THIS PRESENTATION.

HOW TO PRESENT MAGGOT HOOKBAITS 1

Cut 10-12ins of the Camotex Soft coated material and then strip away 3-4ins of outer coating.

5

Position the silicone so it is at the bottom of the bend, set the Hair to the length shown above.

2

Now tie a Maggot Clip to the end of the exposed braid section with a simple 3-turn Grinner Knot.

6

Attach the hook with a Knotless Knot and place a Red Zig Aligna (minus loop at back) over the eye.

3

Slide a 3mm length of the new Trans Khaki Hook Silicone down onto the braid of the hooklink.

7

Open the Clip and carefully thread some maggots onto the point making sure you don’t burst any.

4

Carefully thread the point of your hook through the silicone without snagging the braid.

8

With the clip loaded with maggots simply lock it shut and your maggot rig is ready for action!

TOP

When they get on the maggots the action can be awesome!

Before casting out attach a PVA mesh bag of red maggots to the hook to give added attraction around the hookbait and get quicker bites!

ZIG

WITH A DIFFERANCE AS ZIG RIGS BECOME INCREASINGLY POPULAR THE CARP ARE BECOMING WISER TO THEM AND THEREFORE WE NEED TO GIVE OUR ZIGS AN ADDED EDGE... The launch of the Zig Aligna in early 2013 transformed the way that carp anglers fish with and present Zig Rigs. There are now 6 different colours of Zig Aligna available, which gives the angler numerous hookbait combinations to experiment with. As effective as Zig hookbaits are they can at times be a very static hookbait option and therefore the carp will sometimes approach them with caution. This is often the case on heavily pressured venues where Zigs have been used a lot. In these instances adding a few wriggly maggots to the Zig can give the hookbait a whole new edge and create a hookbait that we affectionately call The Ziggler! The beauty of the Zig Aligna is that the band on the back creates the perfect fixing point for tying a few live maggots to via some cotton. Having those few maggots moving on top of the Zig hookbait can entice a carp into sucking the bait in, especially if you spod some maggots over the top of the rig on a little and often basis. Due to the mechanics of the Zig Aligna, as soon as a carp sucks in your Ziggler hookbait the hook will turn and grab hold of the bottom lip and the fish will be nailed!

14

Fox Rig Guide 2014_14-25.indd 14

07/04/2014 14:04:28

Spodding maggots little and often over the top of Ziggler can be a massive edge.

ABOVE ARE THE COMPONENTS REQUIRED TO CONSTRUCT THIS ZIG WITH A DIFFERENCE.

HOW TO CONSTRUCT A ZIGGLER 1

Thread a Zig Aligna onto the hooklink material and attach your hook with a Palomar knot.

5

Thread some cotton through the eye of a sewing needle and thread 4 maggots onto it.

2

Slide the Zig Aligna back down the line and over the eye of the hook into the position shown.

6

Next, carefully thread the needle between the foam and loop as shown in the image above.

3

Using the loading tool place your chosen colour of foam into the loop on the back of the Zig Aligna.

7

You will then need to tie a couple of overhand knots in the thread to secure it to the Zig Aligna.

4

Take a pair of Edges Braid Blades and carefully trim the foam down to your chosen size.

8

Carefully trim away the tag ends of cotton and you have now created the perfct Ziggler hookbait.

TOP When fishing with long Zig hooklinks it can pay to use long Anti-Tangle sleeves to help prevent tangles from occurring on the cast.

Ziggler success!

HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT

CURVE WHEN FISHING WITH RIGS SUCH AS THE CHOD, HINGED STIFF AND WITHY POOL IT IS IMPORTANT TO CREATE THE RIGHT CURVE IN ORDER TO MAXIMISE HOOKING POTENTIAL... If you wish to fish with a Chod Rig or a Hinged Stiff Rig it will mean using a very stiff bristle filament hooklink material, which can be slightly trickier to work with than braid or coated braid. When using this material to create the Chod hook section it is important that you put a curve into the hooklink as if it is completely straight the hook will not be able to grab hold of the bottom lip of the carp anywhere near as easily or effectively when your bait is sucked in. This curved section acts very much in the same way to some shrink tube or a Line Aligna Adaptor on the eye of the hook in that it aids the hooking potential greatly. It can often be quite tricky to get a nice, even, progressive curve into the stiff hooklink and as a result many anglers end up fishing with a Chod Rig or Hinge Stiff Rig that looks more like a corkscrew! However with the use of a Fox Steam and Store Chod/Withy Bin, you can ensure that you create the perfect curve in your Chod hook sections every time! When using

the Withy Pool Rig it is also vital to create the perfect curve in your shrink tube so that the rig works exactly how it is designed to. Again by using the Chod/Withy Bin you can ensure your homemade Withy Pool Rigs are tied perfectly on every occasion. By creating such curves in these types of rigs not only are the anti-eject properties much better but also the chances of hookpulls are greatly reduced as the curves help to keep the hooks in place during the fight – another big edge!

The perfect curve = the perfect hook hold!

16

Fox Rig Guide 2014_14-25.indd 16

07/04/2014 14:05:21

HOW TO CREATE A PERFECTLY CURVED CHOD HOOK SECTION 1

Tie up your Chod Rig hook section and hook it onto the bar in a Chod/Withy Bin.

2

Run the hooklink around the side of the curved foam and pin the swivel in place.

You can also use the Chod/Withy Bin to steam the perfect curve into shrink tubing...

3

Carefully rotate the Bin over a steaming kettle for 3-4 seconds.

4

Remove the rig from the bin and you have created the perfect curve!

...allowing you to create the perfect Withy Pool presentation for rig-shy carp!

THE

CHOD RIG

IN THE FIRST VOLUME OF CARP FISHING EDGES WE TALKED YOU THROUGH THE IN-VOGUE ‘NAKED’ CHOD RIG; THIS TIME AROUND WE THOUGHT WE HELP YOU WITH THE MORE TRADITIONAL LEADER FISHED CHOD RIG... Just like the ‘Naked’ Chod Rig this presentation is designed to be fished with an ultra-buoyant pop-up hookbait, perfect when fishing over weed and debris (AKA ‘chod’). It is setup helicopter style with the short, curved Chod hooklink fished free running on a leader, which can be tied from either leadcore or a lead-free material such as Edges Submerge. Due to the design of the rig the lead will enter the water first and bury itself in the weed or debris, whilst your buoyant hookbait will cause the hooklink to fly up the leader and out of harm’s way. Then once the lead has landed the leader will slowly sink with the hookbait left to flutter down and sit on top of the ‘chod’. You can dictate how far up the leader the hooklink will fly by setting a 6mm Tapered Bore Bead on some silicone at your chosen distance along the leader. The key is to make sure this distance is greater than the depth of the Chod otherwise the presentation will not work as your hookbait will be buried! The length of leader is a personal thing and is again dependant on the depth of the ‘chod’ you are fishing over. Our advice would be to use the shortest leader you can get away with.

18

Advantage over a ‘Naked’ Chod The Naked Chod is great when fishing over fairly light weed and debris on lakes with little in the way of snags. However, on venues that are thick with weed and snags fishing with exposed main line will mean you have a greater chance of suffering a ‘cut-off ’. On such venues the use of a leader is massively advised as this will provide you with much needed abrasion resistance.

Fox Rig Guide 2014_14-25.indd 18

07/04/2014 14:05:50

HOW TO CREATE A LEADER CHOD RIG 1

Start by cutting a length of your chosen leader and then splice a small loop in both ends.

4

The next step is to slide your curved Chod Rig hooklink section down onto the leader.

7

Select your lead of choice, remove its swivel with some sharp snips and attach it to the Speed Link.

2

3

Now carefully thread a 1cm length of the new Edges 0.5mm Leader Silicone onto the leader.

5

Thread a 6mm Trans Khaki Tapered Bore Bead onto the leader and place onto the silicone, like so.

6

The next thing to be threaded onto the leader is one of the new Trans Khaki Heli Buffer Sleeves - rounded end first.

8

Take a new Edges Micro Speed Link and attach it to the loop on your leader below the Buffer Sleeve, as shown.

9

Now position the Buffer Sleeve over the Speed Link and top of the lead as illustrated in the above image.

Make sure your 6mm bead can pass over the knot from your main line to the leader to ensure the rig is safe.

Finally set the silicone and 6mm bead to your chosen distance above the lead and your Chod Rig is complete!

Chod rigs are a super-effective way to catch carp.

TOP

You can save time and effort by using pre-tied leaders.

THE

METHOD A LARGELY UNDERUSED TACTIC IN THE MODERN WORLD OF CARP FISHING IS THE HUMBLE METHOD FEEDER, HOWEVER, ON ITS DAY THIS TACTIC CAN BE AS EFFECTIVE AS ANY! It is surprising that more people don’t choose to fish with a method feeder as they are very simple to set up and when used correctly can be a truly devastating tactic. The beauty of a method feeder is that it enables you to fish with a large amount of free feed right around your hookbait, in the form of a groundbait. This is similar to using a solid PVA bag but with the ‘method’ you are not limited to PVA-friendly baits and also you can re-bait and re-cast much faster than when using PVA bags. By loading a method feeder with your chosen groundbait mix and placing your hookbait inside the ball you are concentrating your free feed around the hookbait which will help you to get quicker bites as the carp attack the ball of food.

20

Fox Rig Guide 2014_14-25.indd 20

It can be a great method for catching carp!

07/04/2014 14:06:56

HOW TO SET UP A METHOD FEEDER 1

Start by threading a Stix & Stringer Needle through the centre of a method feeder.

2

3

Hook the loop of a readytied Edges Leadcore Leader and slide on the feeder.

Slide the feeder down the leader and position over the swivel, as shown.

4

Attach a short 2-3ins braided hooklink onto the swivel of the leader to complete.

HOW TO CREATE A METHOD MIX 1

Start by adding some specialist method mix into a groundbait bowl.

2

3

Next add some hemp and sweet corn to the groundbait mix.

You will then need to add some lake water to the mix and give it a good stir.

4

Work the mix until you have a sticky consistency that isn’t too wet.

HOW TO LOAD A METHOD FEEDER 1

Start by moulding some of your method mix evenly around the feeder.

2

3

Now take your rig and place the hookbait gently into the side of the mix.

Get some more of the mix and Shape the mix around the mould this evenly around the feeder to be as aerodynamic feeder compacting as you go. as possible so it casts well.

As the groundbait breaks down around the feeder your hookbait will be in prime position.

MATCH YOUR

MIX

HOW OFTEN DO YOU CAST OUT A HOOKBAIT THAT IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO THE FREE OFFERINGS? IT SEEMS COMMON PLACE THESE DAYS SO WHY NOT BE DIFFERENT AND MATCH YOUR MIX?

Due to the number of anglers now using high attract hookbaits, one of the biggest edges you can have in the modern world of carp fishing is to present a hookbait that looks and tastes exactly the same as the free offerings that you put out. Now this is very easy to achieve when you are employing a boilie-only approach as you can simply do away with the fluoro pop-ups and glugged bottom baits and use a bottom bait straight out of the bag for a hookbait. However, on your target venue how many people bait up with a bed of particles but then fish a PVA bag and hookbait of something different? Thanks to a fantastic product called Arma Mesh you can actually create a hookbait that is exactly the same as your spod mix, and by adding a bit of salt to your mix you can also make it PVA-friendly so that you can match your spod mix exactly. Arma Mesh works just like PVA mesh, however, this stuff doesn’t melt, opening up a whole new world of hookbait possibilities.

22

07/04/2014 14:08:11

HOW TO MAKE PVA-FRIENDLY PARTICLES 1

Start by adding a small quantity of lake water to a bait tub like so.

2

3

Next mix some sea salt into the tub of lake water until it dissolves into the water.

4

Take some of your chosen spod mix and add it to the salty water.

Your spod mix will now become PVA-friendly, which is a very big edge!

HOW TO CREATE AN ARMA MESH HOOKBAIT 1

Start by placing a small amount of your spod mix into the dispenser.

4

Now tie an overhand knot in the mesh to secure the bait in place as shown.

2

3

Use the plunger to push the mix out of the bottom of the dispenser, like so.

5

Twist the Arma Mesh above the mix to create a tightly compact little ball.

6

Tie a second overhand knot just above the first and cut between the two.

You have now created the perfect hookbait that matches your free feed.

Steve Spurgeon has experienced lots of success on Arma Mesh hookbaits for years!

As you can see on the lakebed your mix is well and truly matched – big edge!

RUNNING

RIGS WITH INLINE LEADS AND LEAD CLIP SET-UPS BEING USED BY THE MAJORITY THESE DAYS YOU CAN GIVE YOURSELF A MASSIVE EDGE BY SWITCHING TO THE OFTEN-OVERLOOKED RUNNING LEAD PRESENTATION... Look around your chosen venue and the chances are you will see anglers casting out inline leads, helicopter rigs or lead clips set-ups. All of these involve the use of fixed or semi-fixed leads and it is these types of presentation that pressured carp are becoming all the more wise to. Years ago most anglers would be fishing with a free-running lead set-up and for whatever reasons these have now become not so fashionable, however, you can gain a massive edge by bucking the trend and getting on the running leads!

There are two main advantages associated with the use of a running lead. Firstly the lack of resistance when a carp picks up your hookbait can be a massive advantage as the carp will not be able to use the weight of your lead to help eject the rig successfully. These days as soon as a carp feels that slightest resistance from a lead they can often spit the rig very quickly and even shake their heads and use the weight of the lead to throw the hook. By using a lead of 3oz+ on a running set up the fish will shake its head when it feels the hook but the weight of the lead will not come to its rescue! The second advantage is that a running lead set-up can give you much better bite indication. This is because as a fish moves off with the rig the lead will not act as a pivot point and therefore your main line will pull through the ring on your lead, which in turn will cause the line to pass over the roller wheel of your bite alarm and you will then get a bleep on the alarm. When targeting pressured carp, bites can be very finicky and quite often your rig will be ejected without your alarm registering a single bleep, however by swapping over to the running set-up you can convert many more chances!

TAKING RUNNING RIGS TO A NEW LEVEL...

Until recently running rigs had one massive disadvantage – they couldn’t be setup to eject the lead and they could be massively problematic when fishing weedy or snaggy venues. Fortunately as part of the Fox Edges programme they have developed a new running rig clip that can be setup up in way that allows the lead to eject should it come into contact with weed etc. This now means that you can get all of the benefits of a running lead set-up without the previous drawbacks – another massive edge!

HOW TO USE THE ANGLED DROP OFF RUN RIG KIT 1

Start by taking an Edges ready-tied leader and thread a buffer bead from the kit onto it.

3

Take the swivel of your chosen lead (min. 3oz recommended) and push it up inside the ring as shown.

5

The next step is to tie your leader onto your main line, a 5-turn Grinner Knot works well for this.

CREATE A DROP-OFF RUNNING RIG 1

Remove the T-peg from your ring and secure the lead with a PVA tie instead.

Fox Rig Guide 2014_14-25.indd 25

2

When you get a bite the lead is free to eject increasing your chances of landing the fish.

2

Position the buffer bead over the swivel and then slide one of the rings onto the leader.

4

Now take one of the T-pegs supplied in the kit and secure the lead in place on the ring like so.

6

Finally attach your chosen hooklink and your running rig set-up is complete and ready for action.

Running rigs can give you a massive edge!

HIT CARPING

TOM ‘THE MACHINE’ MAKER REVEALS HIS TOP TIPS FOR CATCHING LOTS OF CARP ON LIMITED TIME... It’s not uncommon for me to fish sessions where I can get 40, 50 or even 60 carp during a 48-hour session, now of course that type of fishing is not for everyone but if you are the type of angler that is looking to get big hits of carp on relatively short sessions then I’m sure you will find my following tips of some help.

26

Fox Rig Guide 2014_26-35.indd 26

Follow Tom’s tips and you too can become a machine!

TIP 1 - PICK THE RIGHT VENUE

1

Pick a venue that has the a big hit.

potential to produce

TIP 2 - PREPARATION IS KEY

Ok so with a venue selected it is now important to do some homework and pre-trip planning. Firstly I would look on forums, Facebook and fishery websites to get an idea of the areas of the lake that appear to be producing with regularity. I’m not so bothered about what tactics and baits have been working as I have total faith in the way I would approach venues, for me location is the single most important aspect. With the homework complete I would then set about tying a number of rigs in advance to make sure I have a good supply throughout my session as I don’t want to be wasting time tying rigs during the trip, as this effects the speed at which I can fish at. Furthermore I opt to use ready-tied leaders as this saves me lots more time when on the bank. I can have a couple of packs in my bag so if I get cut-off or suffer a crack-off I can simply grab a ready-tied leader tie it to my main line and be fishing again in minutes. Similarly I will also tie a number of PVA mesh bags up in advance and keep them stored in a waterproof container, this allows me to catch a carp, and get a rig back on the spot as quickly as possible, which in turn means I can catch as many as possible and take advantage of key feeding spells during my stay.

Now this may sound painfully obvious but there is no point fishing a 100-acre lake with 20 carp in it and then hoping to get multiple bites during a 24 or 48-hour trip. It is therefore important to target a venue that has a large head of carp in. Places I tend to target here in the UK include the likes of Thorpe Lea, Brasenose 1 and 2 plus Drayton Reservoir in winter. And when I have travelled to France I have enjoyed targeting the likes of Attila on Abbey Lakes as this too has a good head of carp per acre. Once you have selected a venue that has the potential for a big hit, then you can start to think about the tactical approach.

2 Save time on the bank.

TIP 3 - GET ON THE FISH!

3 Find the fish before you fishing for them!

Fox Rig Guide 2014_26-35.indd 27

start

Having arrived at the venue with plenty of rigs and bags tied I will then spend some time watching the water and speaking to the other anglers to get an idea of where the carp are and cross reference this with the information I have gathered prior to my trip. Usually on high stock lakes the fish will give their presence away if you wait and watch for long enough, and once they do I will setup as close to them as possible.

FIND’EM | FEED’EM | FOX ’EM TIP 4 - FIND A SPOT

4

Once I have picked my swim I will then try to find a nice spot that I can fish all of my rods on. I will generally just attach a lead to a braided line and cast about until I get a solid ‘donk’ on my rod tip and find an smooth area that is clear of weed. Once this area is located I will take note of a feature on the far bank and then place the line in the clip on my reel. I will then reel in and measure the distance by wrapping the line around two banksticks that are 12ft apart. I don’t tend to bother using a marker float and looking for depth variations too much, as long as the spot is clean and is close to where the carp are showing then I am happy.

to find a Use a lead on braided line on. sh fi to t suitable spo

TIP 5 - BE ACCURATE

With my leading rod clipped up I will then clip all of my fishing rods up to the same distance, again by wrapping the line around the banksticks. If the water is more than 12ft deep I will clip the spod rod up at the same distance too. With the rods all clipped up I will also add some marker elastic to line above the clip so that I can recast accurately without having to go around the sticks each time. All I have to do now is aim towards the marker on the far bank and cast all three rods to the clip, aiming one to the middle of the marker, one slightly right and one slightly left. The aim here is to have all three rods on one area so when the carp come in to feed I can take full advantage and concentrate them in one zone.

5 Accuracy is key when big

hit carping.

TIP 6 - KEEP YOUR RIGS SIMPLE

6 28

Simple but effective.

Fox Rig Guide 2014_26-35.indd 28

I have never been one for fishing overcomplicated rigs. My standard approach would instead to be use a rig of 6-8ins long tied from some Coretex Matt with small stripped section near the hook and a simple Knotless Knot. The hook needs to be big so I tend to go for a size 4 or 5 Arma Point in either an SR or SSBP as I like a beaked point and wide gape. On the hookbait front I will tend to fish something different on each rod to start with to see if one thing in particular works better on that day. For example one rod may have a single grain of plastic corn, one a fluoro pop-up and the other a boilie tipped with plastic corn.

08/04/2014 10:12:04

TIP 7 - FEED LITTLE AND OFTEN

7 a little and Feed this concoction on s. ult res t often basis for bes

TIP 8 - DON’T WASTE TIME

Once I have caught a fish I will unhook it and secure it in the margin in the net. I will quickly check the hook point is still sharp, attach another PVA bag and recast the rod back to the same spot. The quicker I can get a baited rod back on the spot the better my chances are of getting another bite sooner rather than later. With the rod back out fishing, I would top up with two or three more Spombs of bait and then have a picture taken with the fish before returning it to its watery home.

9

I see a lot of anglers turning up to fish a lake and they put the majority of their bait out at the start, which generally is not a good idea when fishing for a hit. You are much better to start off with say 20 or so spods/Spombs to the area and then feed on a little and often basis, rather than filling it in at the start. This feeding pattern is a major key to turning one bite into 10 or 20! Thanks to having the line on the spod rod clipped up all I have to do is cast towards the far bank marker and keep a regular trickle of spod mix going onto the spot, which will get the carp competing for food, which in turn makes them far easier to catch. The mix I use for this type of fishing is never that complicated and generally will comprise of sweetcorn, hemp/parti-blend, small pellets and some chopped boilies. During the colder months I will add some maggots and that’s about as complicated as it needs to get really.

8

Get the rod back on the spo

t ASAP!

ent and Don’t be afraid to experim ded. nee en wh es ng cha ring the

TIP 9 - BE PREPARED TO CHANGE

If the bites are not forthcoming or slow up then be prepared to chop and change. I will often give a Zig Rig a go if I haven’t had a bite for a while and if that rods then gets a bite I will change my other rods over to Zigs too. I will also chop and change hookbait colours to try and trigger a feeding reaction from the carp. In addition if the swim does no bites after a few hours and the fish are not showing I will look at moving to a different area until I can find them.

TIPS FOR

DISTANCE CASTING

07/04/2014 14:55:06

ONE OF THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGES PROLIFIC HAULER MARK BARTLETT HAS IN HIS ARMOURY IS HIS ABILITY TO CAST A VERY LONG WAY - HERE HE REVEALS HIS BEST TIPS TO HELP YOU DO THE SAME! The main key when it comes to casting a long way is the use of the correct tools and also the correct technique. If you have 2.75lb 10ft rods coupled with 7,000 sized reels loaded with 0.45mm line a 2oz lead and the wrong casting technique your only hope of presenting a bait past 100yds is a remote controlled boat! In this piece I will share 7 tips with you that will put you on the right track towards putting your baits further, these tips are by no means a miracle cure and you will still need to practice a lot but I’m certain if you follow my advice you will notice results very quickly...

TIP 1 - USE THE RIGHT ROD

1

As a bare minimum you need a rod with a 3.5lb test curve and that is at least 12ft long. If money is no object then you cannot get better than a 13ft 3-5oz Horizon XTK, this rod really is as good as it gets with its Fuji K-Series guides practically eradicating any ‘frap ups’ and allowing the line to fly off the reel and out across the lake. Of course you do not need to spend £300 on a rod to get distances over 150-yards but you do get what you pay for. If you are on a tighter budget then a Warrior S 13ft 3.5lb will still give you a great chance of casting further than you have ever before.

K-Series guides that The Horizon XTK features you can achieve. greatly aid the distances

TIP 2 - GET A BIG PIT REEL

There is no point getting a casting rod and then coupling with an inadequate reel. You need to get a big pit style reel that can hold lots of line and that has a long spool so that the line peels off it freely on the cast. The 12000XT and FX11 reels are both perfect for distance casting as they have super-slow oscillation that gives fantastic line lay, allowing your line to glide of the spool on the biggest of casts.

2 Perfect line lay gives you

Fox Rig Guide 2014_26-35.indd 31

those vital extra yards.

FIND’EM | FEED’EM | FOX ’EM TIP 3 - SPOOL UP WITH PURPOSE DESIGNED CASTING LINE

Now that you have got yourself a great rod and reel combo for distance casting don’t go and limit your potential by spooling up with some old tow rope. You need to get yourself a line that has a low diameter (yet is still very strong) and that is supple so that is comes of the spool very quickly. Fox’s new Exocet line has been specifically designed with the distance caster in mind and with the 13lb version coupled with a shock leader I have managed casts well over the 170yd mark. On lakes where shockleaders are banned I would swap over to the Tapered Exocet Line, which has a thick 0.50mm leader built into it so that there are no leader knots.

3 ed for the job!

Pick a line that is design

5

4 Where rules allow go for

a braided shockleader.

TIP 4 - USE A BRAIDED SHOCKLEADER

32

On lakes where shockleaders are not banned I would always opt for a braided shockleader in the form of the incredible Armadillo. Braided leaders have no stretch at all in them, which means that when I am winding up a daddy of a cast the rod will absorb the full force of the lead and therefore help me to chuck to my full potential. I attach the Armadillo to my Exocet line with a simple back to back Grinner Knot.

Fox Rig Guide 2014_26-35.indd 32

Safety first!

TIP 5 - ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTION

When winding up the biggest of casts you must always protect your casting finger. If you do not offer some protection to your casting finger then you are at risk of the leader slicing through it like cheese wire! There are plenty of finger stall designs out there but the best I have used is the new Fox version, which is based around their Rage predator glove that I had previously used for the past couple of years.

6

5oz Exocet leads will allo w you to reach your full potential.

TIP 6 - USE HEAVY LEADS AND IN THE RIGHT SHAPE TOO!

When I am casting as far as possible I will always go for a 5oz lead and this will help me to compress the rod and achieve the maximum distance. When using a stiff rod there is little point using a 2.5oz lead if you want to be hitting extremes of 150-200yds. My lead of choice for the distance fishing are the Exocet’s, which are a tapered weight forward design that are extremely aerodynamic and fly incredibly straight with no wobble. There is no point trying to cast as far as possible but then selecting a flat or square shaped pear lead as you will never reach your full potential.

TIP 7 - USE THE CORRECT TECHNIQUE

I always stand facing the target to which I am casting at and place my arms above my head (overhead thump style). I put all of my weight on my back foot to start with and then as the cast unfolds I transfer my weight from the back to the front to ensure the lead leaves at maximum velocity. It is important to keep your bottom hand nice and straight and to pull it down towards your body on the cast as this will further aid your ability to compress the stiff rod.

7 Technique is crucial. ‘ Well that is my lot I’m afraid. Hopefully you will have picked up some useful tips to aid you with your distance casting. As I said at the start these tips are no miracle cure but by putting them into practice I guarantee you will start to reach distances that you never thought possible before.’ Good luck and tight lines Bart.

A long range beauty!

EXOCET LEAD

FLAT PEAR SWIVEL

The perfect weight-forward design for distance casting.

A great all-round pattern.

KLING ON LEAD

FLAT PEAR INLINE

Ideal when you need that extra grip.

An ideal design for solid PVA bag fishing.

This lead has a tapered body with a weight-forward design and is specifically designed for distance casting. Its aerodynamic shape helps this style of lead to fly very straight with no wobble ensuring you can reach your full potential when fishing at range. So if you are planning on using helicopter rigs or lead clip set-ups and need to cast as far as possible the Exocet style of weight-forward design is by far your best option. The downside of this style of lead is it has very rounded sides and therefore is prone to rolling when they land on steep lakebeds or fished in fast flowing water.

The Kling On style of lead is a similar shape to the Flat Pear however it has the one distinct difference in that there a number of small nodules on both sides. These nodules give this type of lead unrivalled grip making them the ultimate pattern when fishing on steep slopes such as margins, gravel bars etc and also when fishing on fast flowing rivers too. The Kling On is available up to 12oz and is many people’s choice for distance fishing when using rowing boats or bait boats.

Fox Rig Guide 2014_26-35.indd 35

The flat pear shape of swivel lead is an all-time classic and quite possibly the most commonly used by carp anglers. Although it is not as aerodynamic as the Exocet it will cast a good distance and in the right hands can still make casts in excess of 120yds. The major benefit of this style of lead is its flat side, which enables it to hold position on slopes much better than the rounded distance-type leads.

The Flat Pear Inline is the same shape as the swivel equivalent but as the name suggests is fished inline-style with your leader or main line running through its centre. This particular lead pattern is perfect when you want to fish your lead and rig inside a solid PVA bag as it is much more streamlined than a swivel lead fished on a lead clip. Another great advantage of an inline lead is that it offers a quicker resistance than a swivel lead once a carp sucks in your hookbait and straightens the hooklink, which can be a big edge when targeting rig-shy carp.
