2 MATRIX INTRODUCTION
WELCOME TO MATRIX 2013 MATRIX HAS GROWN RAPIDLY SINCE ITS LAUNCH IN 2011, WITH MATCH AND PLEASURE ANGLERS APPRECIATING THE INNOVATIVE DESIGN, RELIABILITY AND FISH CATCHING PERFORMANCE OF MATRIX PRODUCTS. This year sees the introduction of a wide range of new product, all designed with the Matix ethos of helping you to catch more fish. In some instances the new products complement existing products. An example of this is the increased amount of Snag Free box accessories, all designed to make fishing easier and more efficient. New luggage items, floats, feeders, and additions to existing rod ranges can all be found in this catalogue. However the are also new launches into completely new product areas. The new Matrix Reels have impressed many who have used them and are typical of the Matrix ‘fresh thinking’ approach. The Reflex 4000 is designed for modern feeder and float fishing methods. It has a powerful ‘worm drive’ gear system which offers excellent reliability and power, plus a wide diameter spool for better casting with strong lines, but doesn’t have many of the unused features found on mass produced reels designed for ‘spinning’. It’s simple, reliable, extremely lightweight at just 250g and offers excellent value for money. For anglers wanting an even more affordable reel there’s the Ultron 3000 and 4000. Like the Reflex it only has features you really need, is smooth, compact, powerful and totally reliable.
Matrix 2013_Consumer_2-19.indd 2
Affordability is one area Matrix has concentrated on this year, but not at the expense of quality and performance. The new Carbo-Flex feeder rods offer outstanding value starting at under £50.00, come in four lengths from 9’ (2.70m) for close range feeder fi shing up to 12’ (3.60m) for distance fi shing, and deliver excellent performance that all anglers will find acceptable. The SB Seatbox range is another new product that we are extremely proud of. This new mid-priced seatbox offers a modular solution and comes in four different options. It uses the highly acclaimed Superbox 1 drawer units and can be customised to suit your exact requirements. Perhaps the most surprising new product for 2013 is the Ethos Accessory Chair. Once only used by specimen anglers, Matrix realises more anglers prefer the comfort of a chair, but want the functionality of a seat box. The new Ethos chair has verticle 25mm front legs and can accept all Matrix Snag Free box accessories. The simple design is practical, lightweight and an affordable solution for anglers who prefer to sit upright when fi shing. Nearly all of the products in the Matrix range are unique. Designed and tested by us, for specific uses, they offer an alternative to what’s already available and in many instances a better fi sh-catching solution. Matrix - it’s fresh thinking.

T
he Matrix Seatbox range consists of two styles, the established premium Superbox 1 and the new SB range. Both of these are designed exclusively by Matrix and are not available from any other company. The drawer units on both boxes are common and regarded by many as the best available. The aluminium legs are 25mm in diameter to conform to the most popular size used across Europe, and provide excellent stability. With its understated black ‘stealth-like’ finish, Snag-Free fittings and brilliant drawer units, the Matrix Superbox 1 has been a huge success since its launch. The premium quality Superbox 1 not only looks visually stunning, it performs superbly too and has received high acclaim from angling journalists and satisfied customers. The new Matrix SB Seatbox range has been designed to complement the established Superbox 1. Offering outstanding value for money, combined with a high quality ‘modular’ system, which uses the Matrix Superbox 1 Drawer and Tray Units, their are four options within the range offering excellent value. These options can then be added to, creating the perfect seatbox solution depending on personal preference. The ‘H’ Frame, Footplate and 25mm legs are made from lightweight aluminium and are sold separately for anglers wanting to build their own seatbox system. To complement the Seatboxes is a high quality range of Snag Free accessories which are designed to fit 25mm diameter legs. These have the exclusive Matrix Snag Free fitting which reduces the chance of line getting caught on the tightening wheels.

POLE ELASTIC SET-UPS
Pole Elastics Which Is best?
SOLID OR HOLLOW - WHICH IS BEST? IT’S A QUESTION THAT ALWAYS GETS ANGLERS TALKING SO PERHAPS TWO OF BRITAIN’S TOP ANGLERS CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ON WHICH IS BEST!
W
arren Martin and Les Thompson are top match anglers who just happened to win Britain’s most prestigious and richest matches last year - the £25,000 Fish ‘O’ Mania and the £50,000 Match This final. Both won catching carp on the pole so they are more than qualified to give their opinion on pole elastic set-ups. So which is best?
ELASTIC SET-UPS - WHO USES WHAT Warren’s Elastics
Les’s Elastics
MATRIX SOLID ELASTIC
MATRIX HOLLOW ELASTIC
Small Carp and F1’s Size 8 (1.27mm)
Silver Fish (on carp lakes) Size 8 (Yellow)
Normal Match Carp Size 10 or 12 (1.44/1.60mm) Bagging and Margin fishing Size 16 (2.00mm)
Conclusion
This is where the confusion starts. Warren prefers solid elastics and Les always uses hollow elastics. To complicate things even further Warren uses a normal Winder Bung with his top kits fully elasticated, whilst Les uses a Pull Bung so he can adjust the elastic tension whilst playing the fish.
Warren’s Way
For Warren his elastic set-ups are all about control. They are simple and he knows what they are going to do, how they are going to react and what pressure he can apply. For him solid elastics give him more control than hollow elastics.
Les’s Way
For Les hollow elastic gives him the initial softness he likes, especially when fishing up in the water on a short line. The addition of a Pull Bung enables him to tighten the elastic once he has unshipped which means he can land fish quickly, even on a soft elastic set-up.
Small Carp and F1’s Size 10 (Orange) Normal Match Carp Size 12 (Red)
Confusion
Above: Les Thompson on his way to the £50,000 Match This title. Les caught mostly F1’s with the odd better carp mixed in and used an Orange elastic throughout. Left: Warren with his winners catch to win the £25,000 Fish ‘O’ Mania final. As you can see his catch was a mixture of carp and barbel with some larger bonus carp. He used a size 12 solid elastic.
Based on Warren’s and Les’s set-ups there is no ‘best’ way to elasticate your poles for carp fishing, it is very much a case of personal choice. Warren prefers solid elastic because he feels it gives him more control and he doesn’t use a Pull Bung, so it’s probably fair to say he’s a bit ‘old school’ in his approach. That doesn’t mean he’s not right up with the best modern match anglers as his results and success in the Fish ‘O’ Mania final prove. On the other hand Les is an F1 specialist, as those who know him will testify. His gear is refined to perfection and the stretch of hollow elastic is perfect when catching F1’s and also when fishing up in the water. The use of a Pull Bung compensates for his soft elastic approach and helps him land fish quickly once in netting range. So, if you use solid elastics and are happy, then why change? On the other hand if hollow is your choice, that’s fine too. At least you know even the best can’t agree! See page 61 for Pole Elastics
HELPING CATCH MORE FISH! Congratulations to Matrix anglers Warren Martin and Les Thompson on winning two of the most prestigious match fishing titles in the UK. Warren powered his way to first spot in the dramatic televised final of Fish ‘O’ Mania and just weeks later Les destroyed a high quality line up in the £50k Match This final at Larford.

COMMERCIAL WATER FEEDER FISHING
Commercial Water
Feeding Fishing OVER THE LAST FEW YEAR SMALL ‘COMMERCIAL’ WATERS HAVE DOMINATED THE MATCH AND PLEASURE SCENE WITH THE METHOD FEEDER BECOMING ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE TACTICS. HERE LES THOMPSON REVEALS THE EVOLUTION OF THE METHOD AND HOW HE FISHES IT.

The plastic open end feeder was where it all started...
The cage feeder was the next evolution...
Recently the pellet feeder has become popular...
But the Method feeder is still the dominant choice
S
mall waters are now dominant on the UK match scene, with more and more anglers turning to them for guaranteed action, and one of the best tactics you can adopt is the Method feeder. Since it’s introduction nearly 20 years ago the Method feeder has changed out of all recognition and today’s modern Methods are far more sophisticated than before, with the Matrix Evolution Method right at the top of the tree. That’s not to say other feeders don’t work, they do, and all should have a place in a match anglers armoury. Open end and cage feeders are still popular and in recent years the Pellet feeder has become a firm favourite for some, but the fact remains that the Flat Method is still the first choice for most anglers.
THE MATRIX EVOLUTION METHOD FEEDERS ARE THE LATEST IN A LINE OF ADAPTATIONS AND ARE ONE OF THE FEW IN-LINE FEEDERS THAT CAN BE CHANGED WITHOUT BREAKING DOWN YOUR TACKLE. Matrix Evolution
The Matrix Evolution Method feeders are the latest in a line of adaptations and are one of the few in-line feeders that can be changed without breaking down your end tackle. This makes a huge difference for match anglers fishing tight up to islands. In simple terms it means that you can change any Evolution feeder to another in seconds (see page 11), and by adding a Quick Change Lead Clip you can even swop to a lead or a cage feeder. The big advantage isn’t just speed, it’s accuracy too. Once you are ‘clipped up’ you can swop feeders and still hit the spot first time, and when the fish are tight to an island, this is essential to keep the fish coming.
Groundbait or Pellets
The choice of wether to use groundbait or pellets depends on many things. The size of fish in the swim is one of the most important things. If you need to catch larger fish, but are getting pestered with smaller fish or getting lots of liners, a change to pellets can make a huge difference as they create less cloud in the water. Using a Matrix Squeeze and Feed mould enables you to use pellets up to 2mm on a Method feeder, alternatively you can quickly change to a Matrix Evolution Pellet feeder. Another important point when fishing for large fish is that the Evolution Method feeders don’t have ribs across the middle so you can use big baits safely. Continued

COMMERCIAL WATER FEEDER FISHING The Right Rods
Matrix Carpmaster feeder rods have been designed especially for match sized carp and the shorter versions are perfect for small waters when fishing up to islands or at distances of no more than 40 metres. Available in 8’, 9’ and 10’ (there are 11’, 12’ and 13’ models also available for larger waters), the shorter length models are perfect for short range accurate casting. The shorter length and parabolic through action also makes fish-playing safer and enables you to land fish more quickly. One of the reasons why the Carpmaster rods are so popular is that the they don’t break down into equal lengths like many short rods, which then have a joint in the middle of the rod when assembled. The separate short butt of the Carpmaster provides casting control whilst the long middle section provides a seamless playing action without any joint. For transport you simply break the rod down into its three components (butt, middle section and quiver tip) and place the sections into the EVA transport holder. No rod bands are required.
Big Money Winner
One of the best small water carp anglers in the country is Les Thompson as his £50k win in the ‘Match This’ 2012 final proved. That was fishing the pole, but Les is no stranger to the Method and was in fact one of the anglers behind the design of the Matrix Evolution Feeder System. Les uses a Carpmaster 9’ model for most of his small water carping, fitted with a Matrix Reflex 4000 reel. This is perfect for small waters and the wide spool improves casting accuracy as it allows line to flow smoothly from the spool - very important when fishing tight to islands. Interestingly Les only uses 6lb main line for most of his feeder fishing. “The balance and action of the Carpmaster 9’ is so good I don’t feel the need to fish heavier” says Les, who finishes his rig with a 0.13mm or 0.15mm hooklength tied to a Carp Rigger hook using a knotless knot.
Balanced Tackle
With many anglers fishing heavier than ever before it’s interesting that Les uses such light gear. “On pressured waters, fishing lighter gives you an edge, I’m totally convinced of it” states Les. That probably explains why he also uses the lightest weight of feeder he can get away with, although he will increase the weight to prevent it moving if he is getting problems when fishing on steep slopes close to islands. Perhaps the most startling thing about his set-up is the size 18 hook he almost always uses, in fact Les will often go smaller to keep bites coming. “Pressured waters require a finely tuned approach and by using a size 18 I can keep bites coming when a larger hook would fail” adds Les confidently. And the interesting thing is we aren’t talking about low weight matches, Les still opts for an 18 if he’s bagging!
THE METHOD FEEDER IS NOW THE MOST DOMINANT METHOD FOR THE MODERN MATCH ANGLER FISHING ON HEAVILY STOCKED WATERS
Get Close
One area anglers often ignore when using the Method feeder is the pole line and the margins. Fishing a Method on a pole line can be absolutely deadly and Les uses the Evolution Open Method for this line. Without any ribs the feeder is open enabling fish to get at the bait easily. An underarm cast to 14m is often faster than fishing the pole on the same line and in bad conditions like strong winds it definitely has the upper hand. Fishing the margins often comes into its own towards the end of a match, and the fish are usually larger too. What better way to catch a few match winning fish on the Method, as Les says “they never bottom you out on a feeder!”
What Next?
At the moment most people think Method feeder fishing has gone as far as it can on small waters, but you can bet that if Les and the guys at Matrix have anything to do with it there will be another evolution coming along soon. One thing is for sure, when it comes to the Method there’s almost nothing to beat it.
1. HANDLE LENGTH Carpmaster rods have different length handles designed for their intended use. 2. REEL SEATS Soft-touch, custom designed reel seats all have screw down hoods for comfortable use. 3. HOOK KEEPER The hinged hook keeper is easier to use than conventional ‘fixed’ versions. 4. HIGH MODULUS BLANK The Carpmaster blanks all have semi-parabolic actions for optimum fish-playing. 5. GUIDES Feeder rods have lightweight, strong guides suited for their intended use.

THE EVOLUTION SYSTEM
Feeder Fishing
EVOLUTION
THE NEW MATRIX EVOLUTION SYSTEM IS A BRILLIANT, BUT SIMPLE WAY OF INSTANTLY CHANGING FROM FISHING ANY KIND OF FEEDER TO A LEAD WITHOUT HAVING TO BREAK DOWN YOUR KIT.
T
he Evolution System has two main components, the Rubber Quick Bead and the Tail Rubber, plus one of the following accessories; the Lead Clip for open ended feeder, cage feeder and bomb work, the Evolution Method Feeder for Method feeder fishing and the Evolution Pellet Feeder for pellet feeder fishing. Because all three are interchangeable, without having to break down the rig, you don’t need multiple rods set up as you can change from one to another in seconds. Using the Evolution System gives you total flexibility. If you are fishing a groundbait Evolution Method feeder but are getting too many liners, or small fish are becoming a problem, you can change to a Pellet feeder in seconds. If you are fishing a feeder, and want to change to a bomb, you can simply add the Quick Change Lead Clip to your main line, add a bomb to the clip and carry on fishing. Using the Evolution System also has another advantage, they are fish safe and enable fish to pull free should a breakage occur.
THE EVOLUTION SYSTEM... EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR A QUICK CHANGE SET-UP
Evolution Method Feeder Open The Evolution Method feeders come in two styles - with and without hoops. The Hooped version provides better grip for groundbait or pellets and can be used for medium and long range fishing. The Open version is designed for close work and releases bait quickly. Both styles are in-line and because there are no cross bars can be successfully used with large baits. The Pellet Feeders have the same quick change stem and position the hookbait perfectly to intercept feeding fish. All feeders have a hole in the base which enables the hook and Rubber Quick Bead to be passed through for an instant change.
Matrix 2013_Consumer_2-19.indd 10
Evolution Method Feeder Hooped
The Rubber Quick Bead is used to connect your hooklength to the main line. It has a simple quick change facility enabling hooklengths to be changed in seconds.
The Tail Rubbers are used with the Evolution Method Feeders and also the lead clip. These tail rubbers push onto the stem of the Method feeders and also the Lead Clips to make a secure and neat finish.
Evolution Pellet Feeder
The Quick Change Lead Clip has a special groove in the stem for accepting your main line. Once in position the stem is covered by a Tail Rubber which secures the clip and makes a neat finish.

1. Fill the mould with groundbait or softened small pellets.
2. The unique design of the base, with central slots and compression sides, enables the feeder to be ‘squeezed’ out. 3. The small holes in the base of the mould prevent a vacuum forming during compression producing a better loading.
2. Push the feeder into the mould to compact the mix.
3. Turn over and squeeze the sides together and the feeder drops out!
THE EVOLUTION METHOD FEEDER... THE QUICK CHANGE METHOD FEEDER
1. Pass the hook and the Rubber Quick Bead through the feeder base.
2. Turn the feeder over so the Rubber Quick Bead is on the feeder.
3. Pass the mainline through the slot in the feeder stem.

OPEN WATER FEEDER FISHING
O
pen water feeder fishing usually means ‘bream’ fishing to many anglers and it’s an undeniable match winning method on many natural venues. Whilst modern feeder methods are often complicated, a simple and patient approach is often best when bream fishing. The most important requirement when open water feeder fishing is accurate casting.
Line and Length
Without islands to fish up to, open waters often appear featureless and judging accuracy can become more difficult. The two key parts of hitting the same spot consistently are line and length. For an accurate line pick a far bank marker like a bush or a tree and aim at it. For length use a line clip and feather the cast as the feeder is in the air, so that the line gently hits the clip just before it hits the surface. By moving the rod to the side, as the feeder is about to land, you can cushion the cast and almost place the feeder onto the surface.
Groundbait and Hookbaits
Almost all bream respond to a sweet fishmeal groundbait and there are many pre-made mixes available. Some of these can be quite sticky so make sure you don’t add too much water, you want a fluffy mix that will come out of the feeder once it is on the bottom. Add a few casters, chopped worms and hookbait samples to the mix to give the fish something to feed on. For hookbaits there are many choices and what works on one water may not work on another. Below: There’s no need to rush when playing bream. Use a through action rod and let it absorb the pressure.
Open Water
A single dead red maggot is always a safe starting point, but don’t ignore multiple maggots, small pieces of chopped worm, pinkies or casters. On waters which see a lot of pellets used a hairrigged 4mm or 6mm pellet can be devastating.
End Tackle
There are two options of feeder to choose from, either plastic open ended and cage versions. A cage feeder releases the groundbait more quickly than a plastic feeder and although it can be used with fine groundbait in shallow water, if used in deep water the groundbait must be stickier and more coarse. For deeper swims use a plastic feeder which will hold the bait in until it has landed on the bottom. Groundbait falling out of the feeder whilst sinking will attract small fish, which isn’t what you want when fishing for bream, and can also encourage line bites as the fish come off the bottom to intercept the bait. Bream are designed for bottom feeding so that’s where you want them. Because bream aren’t hard fighting there’s no need to use strong hooklengths and large hooks. Generally a 0.12mm hooklength will cope with most bream fishing situations. Hook size should match the bait size. For single baits a size 20 is usually correct, for double baits and small worm pieces step up to an 18 or even as large as a 14. If the water sees a lot of pellet use try hair rigging a soft 4mm or 6mm pellet.
Take Your Time
Bream fishing is vary rarely a race and one of the worst things you can do is lose a fish in the shoal as this can unsettle them and stop them feeding for a while, or even worse make them leave the swim altogether. Bites on still waters are almost always steady pulls and there’s often no need to strike quickly. In fact it’s better to let the bite develop and then pick up the rod and gently tighten into the fish. Bites don’t always pull the tip right round but any positive movement, especially if the tip moves and then stays in position, is almost certainly a bite. If the tip moves and then drops back (usually quite quickly) it is probably a liner and should be left. Once you have tightened on a fish and hooked it, gently lead it away from the shoal. Bream shake and nod their heads a lot when hooked and this can be felt on the rod, which is why a through action rod like one of the Carpmaster Method Feeder models work so well as the action absorbs the sudden knocks. When the fish gets in netting range guide it into the net, don’t be tempted to chase the fish and spook it which will increase the chance of a hook pull.
Keep It Simple
Successful open water bream fishing is relatively simple. It requires patience but with fish of 2lb plus it doesn’t take long to put a sizable weight together and can be one of the most satisfying styles of match fishing there is.
OPEN WATER FEEDER FISHING FOR BREAM REQUIRES A METHODICAL APPROACH. MATRIX BOSS RICKY TEALE REVEALS HIS EFFECTIVE METHODS.

Above: Keep things simple when open water feeder fishing and get set-up correctly by sitting at about 30º to the bank with all of your bait within easy reach. Far Right: Aim at a far bank marker and use a line clip for accuracy when fishing in open water.
Above: a simple dead red maggot hookbait is always a good bait. Left: A sweet fishmeal groundbait works well through the year.
GET YOUR SET-UP RIGHT AND YOU CAN QUICKLY BUILD UP A GOOD WEIGHT OF BREAM THE RIGHT GEAR... THE RODS, THE REEL, THE FEEDERS AND THE HOOKS For open water bream fishing the Carpmaster Method Feeder in 11’ (3.30m) or 12’ (3.60m) are perfect. These rods have through actions for playing fish safely but with enough power in the butt section for accurate casting. The Reflex 4000 reel, with its large diameter spool, is the ideal size for medium range feeder fishing. Ricky uses Super Match hooks which have a wide gape and a small micro barb in a size 20 and Matrix Open Ended Feeders for most of his bream fishing.

LONG RANGE FEEDER FISHING
Matrix 2013_Consumer_2-19.indd 14
15/03/2013 14:31:57
15 www.fishmatrix.co.uk
GETTING THE DISTANCE... STAND UP, GET YOUR ARMS AWAY FROM YOUR BODY AND LET RIP! 1. Make sure the distance from the tip to the feeder is at least 2-3’ (60-100cm) and your rod is directly over your head. Look at your far bank marker.
2. Start to drive the rod forward with your right hand. Don’t hit the feeder too hard at first, let the rod do the work as you increase the power.
3. As the rod starts moving faster extend your right arm more and start to pull quickly with your left hand. The rod is now at maximum compression and power.
4. As you let go of the line your right arm should be fully extended. Now watch the feeder in flight and follow it with the tip to reduce line friction.
L LONG RANGE FEEDER FISHING IS MORE THAN JUST AN EXERCISE IN DISTANCE CASTING, IT ALSO REQUIRES A DIFFERENT APPROACH.
ong range feeder fishing for bream is a specialist tactic used widely across Europe on the large lakes and ship canals. By long range we’re talking about 80 metres plus, which is a long way for most anglers, especially when using ‘normal’ tackle. That’s why to fish successfully at long range you need the right gear. But long range fishing isn’t just about the tackle, it’s equally as important to adapt your methods, bait and fishing strategy. When fishing for bream at range you can’t fire balls of groundbait in so all feeding has to be done through a feeder. Because of the distance large capacity feeders can’t be used, so putting down a bed of bait to hold the fish in the swim is out, it’s more about catching one fish at a time and making sure you maximise your chances. That goes against what most bream anglers would like to do, but if you think about it most match carp feeder fishing is about fishing for and catching just one fish at a time, so why should bream be different? When fishing at close and medium range bream fishing isn’t about speed, but when you are fishing at range and don’t have a lot of bait in the swim, you want to make sure you get your share as the fish move though your swim. That’s why it’s important to use the right groundbait, hookbaits and end tackle. But first you have to have the right gear.

LONG RANGE FEEDER FISHING The Right Gear
Using the right gear to fish at distance is essential and if you haven’t got the right tackle you just aren’t going to be able to compete. Rods The most important thing you need is a specialist long range feeder rod. The Horizon range comes in four lengths ranging from 3.8m for fishing up to 70m to a 4.5m model for 120m plus. These rods have a special long spigot on the butt section which not only reduces the rod diameter it also creates more low down casting power which is most important. Of course the casting power in the butt and lower middle section needs to blend in with the fish-playing action in the top section and the Horizon rods get this blend just right. Another important point are the quivertips. The guides on the tip have to be large enough to allow free flow of line and shock leader knots through smoothly and they must be of the correct strength. For fishing at extreme range you need a carbon tip of at least 2oz, any lighter and it will bend too much in the tow. On exposed lakes or large ship canals which tow a 4oz tip is needed. Reels and Reel Line A large reel is also essential. Matrix don’t have a reel large enough for the job, but the Fox 12000 size is perfect for
IF YOU ARE FISHING AT RANGE YOU NEED THE RIGHT ROD. IF YOU CAN’T FISH WHERE THE FISH ARE YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT BOTHER! long range fishing. A big reel is worth the investment and will add a lot of distance to your casting. Most of the top distance feeder anglers in Europe use braided main line. It has a much thinner diameter, which improves casting distance, and with almost no stretch improves bite registration at distance. To compensate for
the last of stretch use a 10lb mono shock leader of about 6 metres. This shock leader will have some stretch in it, which is helpful when playing fish close to the net as it reduces hook pulls. On calm days the use of a bright coloured braid can show up quick bites better than a dark line, especially whilst your line is sinking.
THE RIGHT GEAR... THE RODS, THE LINE, THE FEEDERS AND THE HOOKS For the ultimate casting performance you need the right rods. The Horizon Feeder range has been designed for distance casting. Braided mainline like Submerge, with it’s thin diameter, will add distance to your casts and the use of Horizon Feeders makes sure you achieve your potential. Matrix Super Match hooks are lightweight with small micro barbs. Matrix don’t have a Big Pit reel at the moment so use a Fox 12000 XT reel.

17 www.fishmatrix.co.uk Left: A typical Dutch ship canal. To catch you have to fish to the far bank shelf which is over 80 metres away. It’s deep, it pulls and it’s exposed, normal feeder gear just isn’t up to the job.
Above Right: Groundbait has to be a coarse sticky mix which has food value, stays in the feeder and won’t get washed away. Right: Small skimmers aren’t what you want when fishing at 100m, thats why bigger baits are used like 3 pinkies, 3 maggots or large peices of worm.
Feeders For fishing at range you have to use an aerodynamic bullet type feeder with the weight at the front like the Matrix Horizon Feeders. These fly straighter and much longer than normal cage feeders. Don’t use plastic feeders because they will eventually break when they hit the water, metal cage feeders are much stronger but not as streamline as bullet feeders. Hooks When fishing at distance it is important to try and hook every bite. This means using a bigger hook than perhaps you would normally, but this is okay because for most long range bream fishing the use of bigger baits is common. The Matrix Super Match hooks are perfect because they have a wide gape, a small micro barb and are made from a medium wire. These are the first choice of hook when hooking baits normally like maggots, pinkies or worms. If using a hair rig with pellets, sweetcorn or mini boilies use the eyed Matrix Feeder Riggers which are specially made for hair rigs using a knotless knot.
Matrix 2013_Consumer_2-19.indd 17
Methods and Bait
For long range fishing a simple standard paternoster set-up is used. There are no swivels or beads which can cause tangles, although some anglers do add a small swivel to their hooklength to prevent spinning up of the hooklength when retrieving quickly. Hook sizes are generally bigger than you would expect and so are the baits used. It’s important that you are fishing effectively so to avoid being pestered by small fish 2 or 3 maggots (or pinkies) are used or a large piece of chopped worm. On some waters pellets are now being used on a hair rig. Groundbait has to be different to normal bream fishing. A coarse mix with larger ‘food’ particles is needed which is supplemented with casters, chopped worm and pinkies. The mix also has to be stickier than a traditional bream groundbait because it needs to stay in the feeder longer, has to cope with the force of the cast and on waters with tow must not be washed away. Some anglers are now switching to ground pellet
type mixes, which seem to work on some waters but not all. The choice of groundbait is very personal but it must have a good food and attraction value and it has to stay in the feeder until you either get a fish or wind in for a recast.
Putting It Into Action
Long range fishing is all about efficiency. You need the right gear to reach the
fish and you need to make every bite count, especially if the fish are passing through. Once the fish are in your swim you need to make every bite count so don’t pick up too quickly, give it time to develop - it’s a long way back without a fish! And don’t keep re-casting. If you get your groundbait right you know it will still be in the swim waiting to attract a bite, be confident!

BOLO
MATRIX HAVE LAUNCHED A NEW REFLEX RANGE OF RODS FOR BOLO FISHING. THE DEVELOPMENT, IN CONJUNCTION WITH TOP GERMAN ANGLER CARSTEN RÖSCHL, HAS TAKEN PLACE ON MANY WATERS THROUGH EUROPE. HERE’S A TESTING SESSION ON THE SILO CANAL IN GERMANY WITH RICKY TEALE.

Ricky Teale puts the new Reflex Bolo rods through their final testing on the Silo Canal in Germany catching bream and skimmers.
A
s a true European brand it is important that Matrix keeps pace with new methods and tackle developments. One such method is Bolognese (Bolo) fishing, which although not new is very popular across Europe. To develop the new Reflex range required knowledge of what was needed, both technically and practically, and the Silo Canal in Germany was the place to start.
The Perfect Bolo Rod
Designing rod perfection is almost impossible because anglers have different views on what they want and Bolo rods are no different. They need to be long (at least 6m) to cope with the depth of large rivers and canals and to give good float control. They also need to be light and well balanced as the method requires an active approach of casting, controlling the line and playing fish for several hours. The start of the Reflex project involved looking at the basic requirements of length and action. The easy part was lengths and we soon realised that two lengths were essential to cover most match fishing situations, both 6 and 7 metres. The action was more difficult to develop due to the nature of the fishing. There are times when roach and small skimmers are the target, so the tip has to be responsive and sensitive, however there
are other times when larger skimmers and bream are caught so power and control also needs to be considered. To complicate things further fish up to 12oz (300g) are regularly swung to hand when bagging so strength is important and the rod must have the correct action to make casting large floats easy.
Testing Times
The Silo canal is a German Mecca for match fishing with weights of roach and bream up to 60lb (30kg) possible. It runs hard and is up to 15’ (5m) deep. The most productive method is a positive approach feeding ball of groundbait a chuck with bunches of bloodworm on the hook. For roach the
new slim Run Bolo float is used. This is run through at pace and strikes cleanly. For bream the new Hold Bolo float, with a large shoulder, is used and held back with the bait over depth. During testing the new Reflex Bolo rods performed as near perfect as possible. They are responsive enough to catch roach, strong enough to swing fish up to 12oz (300g), powerful enough to control bream quickly and have an excellent casting action that copes with floats from 8 to 18g.
Left: Carsten with a net of bream caught testing the new Relex Bolo rods.
Matrix Hold
The Reflex Bolo rods are as perfect as we can get. They are well balanced, sensitive in the tip with a smooth playing action and a powerful butt for casting large floats and fishing in deep rivers and canals. The two new Bolo floats have long bodies and carbon stems to prevent tangles when casting. The Run is a slim shape used to fish at the pace of the flow, usually for roach and small skimmers, the Hold has a large shoulder for holding back when fishing over depth for bream. The Super Match hooks have a wide gape that is perfect for large baits and a medium wire which holds well but doesn’t damage soft baits like bloodworm.

INTERNATIONAL RULES POLE FISHING
International Rules
Pole Fishing INTERNATIONAL RULES POLE FISHING IS QUITE A LOT DIFFERENT TO THE UK. MOST IS DONE ON NATURAL VENUES FOR SILVER FISH, LIKE ROACH AND BREAM, AND THERE IS A LENGTH LIMIT OF 13M WHICH IS WHY MATRIX DEVELOPED THE FLAGSHIP FINESSE COMPETITION.
Matrix 2013_Consumer_20-31.indd 20
D
esigning a top of the range 13m pole for the International angler was a new experience for Matrix. To create an outstanding 13m pole, for International rules fishing, isn’t as simple as leaving off a couple of sections from a 16m pole, it requires a new taper design to get the best balance and stiffness. The Finesse, at exactly 13 metres, is a stunning fast taper match pole designed to cope with International methods, which tend to be more aggressive than UK silver fish methods. Venues are often natural rivers or canals, are usually quite deep, and don’t contain that many carp, so extreme strength isn’t a major factor. What is important is that the pole must be exactly 13 metres, which is why the Finesse top kits are already cut back to take a 1.2mm elastic (number 8). And top kits differ compared to UK top kits. We need short strong top kits for carp, International competition anglers want long top kits to cope with depths of up to 5 metres. The Finesse has two different top kit options, a Standard Top Kit for fishing floats up to 8g and a River Top Kit for large flat floats and strong powerful flows. There’s also a top 5 Cupping Kit. As you would expect all kits are the same length.

loat choice is a very personal thing and what suits one angler doesn’t always suit another, but there are certain features which most anglers agree on and it is these features that we build into Matrix floats. As you will see our concise float ranges are designed for specific uses or specific species, we don’t design hundreds of different patterns because quite honestly anglers don’t need that many! The Carp Series (1, 2, 3, 7, 8) are designed to withstand the punishment that carp fishing puts on floats and all have either a carbon or fibre stem for strength. The Poly Series have bodies made from the latest closed cell foam (not balsa wood) which is waterproof, so even if the paint surface gets damaged water isn’t absorbed. Pencil shaped floats are becoming more popular and the Pencil Series offers three options to suit different styles of fishing. The Sight Tip Series is made especially for European anglers fishing deep and often exposed waters. These are very sensitive but also stable in windy conditions thanks to their long stems and the long carbon tips with a plastic sight tip at the top. Finally there is the Silver Fish Series (9, 10), which as the name suggests are designed for silver fish. The two models in the range cover most modern silver fish fishing.

The Poly Series is made from waterproof closed cell foam which will not absorb water. They have hollow tips, which can be easily shotted for perfect bite registration, and are suited to carp fishing during the summer months when the fish are active. The Line Through model has a fine plastic insert through the body, just under the eye, where the line can be passed to prevent damage to the body when playing fish. The Poly Hold is designed for Europe and comes in a wide range of sizes up to 20g. Perfect for holding back and slowing down the bait on moving waters it offers great stability.

SERIES 9,10
The Silver Fish Series are versatile patterns suited to a wide range of styles. The Series 9 has a plastic tip and is a favourite of Carsten Röschl. Designed for fishing on the bottom with a wide range of baits it has a long carbon stem for stability and a plastic tip for sensitivity. The Series 10 is designed for fine presentation and has a fibre tip for excellent sensitivity and a wire stem for stability.

A lot of anglers fishing commercial carp venues are now using Pencil floats. These floats are ideal for lifting and dropping baits to induce bites, especially when using pellets fishing for F1’s. They are also very good for caster fishing. Although all three models look similar there are differences. Series 4 and 6 have a carbon stem, however the Series 4 has a thicker tip for use with large baits including meat and corn. The Series 6 has a slimmer tip more suited to F1’s and smaller baits like 2 or 4mm pellets. The Series 5 has a wire stem and a thin plastic tip and has been designed for use with maggots and casters, especially on the drop

The Carp Series are tough floats designed for match carp fishing. The Series 1 is often described as the perfect F1 float. Designed for fishing a bulk, with dropper shot, it has a hollow tip which can be dotted right down and a thick carbon stem for stability. This is one of Les Thompson’s favourites. Series 3 and 8 are tough floats with fibreglass stems glued directly into the hollow tip for added strength. The short length of the Series 3 is perfect for margin fishing and is a favourite of Warren Martin. The Series 2 has a thick top making it perfect for larger baits and fishing shallow.
Sight Tip floats have a long carbon tip with a plastic sight tip. They offer excellent sensitivity combined with stability and are perfect for windy conditions.

HARDWARE FOR POLE FISHING
T
o fish a pole efficiently you need a lot of additional tackle. In fact it’s not until you start using box accessories designed for pole fishing that you realise just how essential they really are. From simple Tulip Pole Rests to Folding Pole Supports, Matrix has all options covered. The most obvious accessory you need is a pole roller and there’s nothing more versatile than the Super Flat Pole Roller. This ultra stable roller has a huge height range adjustment and differs from many as it can be used directly on the ground making it perfect for raised banks.
Pole Support
In recent years pole supports have become more popular and the new Matrix Folding Pole Support offers an excellent solution. For fishing on a river using a flat float, where you need to hold your pole still to fish properly, a pole support is essential. It is also very useful if fishing
at long range, especially when fishing a very short line between the pole tip and float. The big advantage of the Snag Free Folding Pole Support is the fact that it can be packed away without having to break it down. Simply remove it from your seatbox legs, fold it down and pack it away.
YOU CAN’T DO WITHOUT SEATBOX ACCESSORIES IF YOU WANT TO FISH THE POLE EFFICIENTLY. MATRIX MAKES A WIDE RANGE TO COVER ALL REQUIREMENTS.

Roosts And Rests
For the safe storage of spare top kits you need a roost that holds the kits securely. In the past roosts were made from cut EVA foam but the problem with them was that in windy conditions the kits could be blown off the roost. The new Snag Free Pole Roost Complete comes with 7 Tulip Rest heads which grip the kits securely overcoming the problem. With a Snag Free fitting at each end this can be attached to a rear box leg or a Matrix Side Tray leg and positioned within easy reach. For balling in groundbait at the start of a match the Up & Over Pole Rest is an efficient support covered in protective foam to prevent any pole damage. Once fishing you need a way of holding the pole once the top kit has been unshipped. There are two options in the Matrix range to chose from depending on your preference. The Pole Sock is excellent for steep banks as it prevents the unshipped pole moving forward. For flatter situations the simple Tulip Pole Rest works perfectly and can accommodate the largest diameter top kits. If you are double unshipping because of a restrictive bank behind you the use of a foam covered Protector Bar will keep the unshipped section safely off the ground.
SUPER FLAT POLE ROLLER
The Super Flat Pole Roller comes in two sizes and is an improvement on existing rollers. Featuring long telescopic legs with additional tension bars for stability, both rollers also come with a unique ‘Ground Spike’ for use directly on the ground. • Available in Standard and Large sizes • Cam locking on tension bars of legs for stability • Cam locks on telescopic legs for perfect adjustment • Unique additional ‘Ground Spikes’ for use without legs when fishing with raised bank behind • Standard Roller - Width 54cm. Height 0-60cm • Large Roller - Width 70cm. Height 0-80cm • Folds flat for easy transport
Side Trays
To keep bait close to hand you need a side tray and the Matrix Aluminium Side Tray offers the perfect versatile solution and can accommodate 6 bait tubs with room to spare. It has a Snag Free adaptor on one side to connect to your box and two adjustable legs on the other. These legs have a hidden thread fitting under the end cap for attaching other accessories. Other bait holding solutions include the Snag Free Bowl and Hoop, available in both a round or square profile. These are perfect for keeping groundbait close to hand and the Snag Free 2 Bait Tub Bait Waiter for additional bait storage. Both have a Snag Free fitting which can be fitted to any 25mm box leg.

hen feeder fishing on an open water it is important to position yourself correctly. The ideal position is to have your seatbox at about a 30° to the bank, facing in the same direction as the wind is blowing and not into it. This is more comfortable and also makes bites easier to see. It is also important to make sure you have no trees, bushes or long grass behind you that might prevent you casting properly or be in your way when striking.
Getting Things Level
It is also important to use the adjustable legs on your seatbox to get everything as level as possible. All Matrix seatboxes come with a spirit level in front of the seat which makes things easier. Ideally you need to try to get as much of the leg as

pivot points on the arm making it very stable, even in the strongest flows and windiest conditions. It can also be extended which enables you to support the rod about 50% up its length, which in turn reduces tip bounce in windy conditions. The feeder rest head is also an important consideration. It should enable you to move your rod in small increments, so you get exactly the right tension on the tip, and should not have an protrusions which might catch the line. The Snag Free Feeder Rest might look very simple but it works perfectly and is a brilliant stillwater feeder rest.
Keep Bait Close
Using A Feeder Arm
Setting up your feeder arm and butt support is very important. No only does it need to be positioned in the right place it needs to be as stable as possible. There are three choices of Feeder Arm in the Matrix Snag Free range. The standard Feeder Arm, the Adjustable Feeder Arm and the new Mega Feeder Arm which has two leg connection points for increased stability. This is perfect for distance feeder and river work and can be adjusted to suit lots of different positions. The construction of the Mega Feeder Arm is very important. It has interlocking
Position The Butt
There are several options for resting your rod butt. Some anglers like to place the rod butt on their knee or seatbox seat, but for comfort use a Snag Free Protector Bar. If you position it close to you it enables you to move about on your box to prepare bait or load a feeder without altering the set up of your rod.
Good side trays are a very important part of the feeder anglers set up as they give room to place several bait options (maggots, casters, pinkies, worms, pellets, etc.) along with spare accessories and feeders, close to hand. The Matrix Side Tray has the capacity you need to do just that. It is designed to comfortably take six 3.3 pint bait boxes, with room to spare. The tray has a single fixing on one side, to fix it to your box and two adjustable 25mm legs on the other side for stability. The end caps of the legs can be removed to reveal a threaded insert. For storage when being transported the legs are pushed into clips on the underside of the tray making it very neat and compact. The perfect way to store your groundbait is in an EVA Bowl and Hoop. These come in both round and square versions and should be positioned at the front of the side tray so that it is easily accessible.

The single wheel option offers good manoeuvrability but lacks stability, is more difficult to push on rough ground and is tiring on the arms. The double wheel is more stable, easier to push but difficult to manoeuvre. With the Matrix Trolley you get the best of both worlds. Like many trolleys there is a big load area to accommodate the largest of seatboxes and at least one large carryall, the Matrix Trolley also has a waterproof carry bag fitted between the handles for clothing. The wide positioning of the wheels and the positioning of the suspension improves balance and stability and combined with the high quality pneumatic tyres makes the trolley easy to push over smooth and rough ground
Matrix 2013_Consumer_32-45.indd 32
The pivot suspension keeps the load area flat and more stable.
Pivot Suspension
The real benefit of the Matrix Trolley is the twin wheel pivot suspension which makes manoeuvring and steering much easier than most other two wheel trolleys available. This suspension also keeps the load area of the trolley flat when the ground slopes, something which doesn’t normally happen with two wheel versions. To turn sharp corners is simple with the Matrix Trolley and is no different to riding a bike, you simply lean the trolley slightly and the wheels automatically turn providing the turning performance of a single wheel with the stability of two.
The rear waterproof carry bag is designed for clothing.
The Matrix Trolley is easy to pack down too and depending on the size of you car can be broken down totally flat or left part assembled.

he new Ethos Accessory Chair is the perfect solution for anglers wanting the comfort of fishing from a chair, with the practicalities of fishing in an upright position using accessories to make fishing easier and more efficient. Perfect for anglers who fish using match type methods, the Ethos Accessory Chair combines excellent height adjustability to suit all preferences, with the ability to use Snag Free box accessories on the vertical front legs.
www.fishmatrix.co.uk
The Perfect Feeder Chair
Weighing less than 5kg, and easy to transport using the supplied shoulder strap, the chair has a low back design which does not inhibit arm movement when casting. This makes it great for feeder and float fishing where overhead casting is required. For the feeder angler the addition of a Matrix Snag Free Feeder Arm provides a great solution on man-made fisheries. Add a Snag Free Groundbait Bowl and Hoop, or a 2 Bait Tub Bait Waiter and you have everything to hand for comfortable and efficient fishing.
Fishing Adjustability
Because both the front and rear legs adjust on the Accessory Chair, it is very easy to obtain the perfect height for pole fishing without the front legs getting in the way. This means you can swivel sideways and rest your pole across your legs as you would on a seat box or if you prefer face forwards and use a pole support. The options with this simple, but effective chair are literally endless.
Black Is Back
For former match anglers the black colour will be a bonus. Matching with Ethos Luggage, the Accessory Chair is more efficient to fish from than most ‘specialist’ green chairs available and the black colour makes a statement that you aren’t a ‘specimen or specialist’ angler but an angler who fishes match style methods seriously.
The shoulder strap makes the chair easy to transport.
THE MATRIX ETHOS ACCESSORY CHAIR COMBINES COMFORT WITH A PRACTICAL DESIGN THAT ALLOWS ACCESSORIES TO BE USED ON THE LEGS FOR MORE EFFICIENT FISHING.

ROD ACCESSORY HOLDALL... BRILLIANT STORAGE WITH A FREE ACCESSORY CASE INCLUDED
The Ethos Rod Accessory Holdall has separate pockets for individual rods.
There are pockets at the base of the holdall for Ethos Accessory Bags.
R
od transport is now more important than ever before, especially for match anglers who have more methods to choose from and less time to set up. Fortunately Matrix has several rod storage and transport solutions to cover almost all situations and preferences, available in two ranges – Ethos and Azur.
The stunning black Ethos is a premium luggage range offering three different rod storage options, the blue and black colour Azur is a value for money range that offers two options in varying sizes.
Made Up Rods
To satisfy the increasing numbers of anglers now taking rods already made-up, Ethos has two options, the Rod Accessory Holdall in both 2 and 4 rod versions, which has internal pockets at the base for Ethos Accessory Bags. These bags are perfect for storing feeders, leads and other accessories which are to be used with the rods. With built-in protective stiffeners, padded dividers and full length zips they are safe and easy to use. Both the 2 and 4 rod options come with an adjustable shoulder strap, a separate carry handle and a free Ethos Accessory Bag. For anglers wanting a versatile hybrid solution take a look at the Super Rod & Pole Holdall. This holdall has storage for two made-up rods in a padded storage compartment, plus two additional full length compartments for a pole, top kits and other unmade rods. Externally there is a pocket for banksticks, feeder arms and longer box accessories. Fitted with a shoulder strap and carry handle the Super Rod & Pole Holdall has a broad flat profile for transporting on a barrow or trolley. For anglers wanting an alternative made-up solution there is the Azur Rod Holder. This is available in a 1.65m length for madeup storage of 3 piece rods or a 1.90m length for 2 piece rod storage. Both lengths come in 2, 3 and 4 rod versions with an external pocket for banksticks and twin shoulder straps so the holdalls can be carried on the back like a rucksack.
The Accessory Bags are perfect for storing feeders, leads or other tackle used with the rods.
Pole and Rod Storage
For pole and unmade rod storage the Ethos Rod Holdall comes in two sizes – the Medium will accommodate 8 tubes, the Large has a huge 10+ capacity. Both holdalls have a wide flat profile making them easy to place on other luggage when using a barrow. Alternatively there is an adjustable padded carry strap and a carry handle. The main storage compartment has full length zips enabling the holdall to be opened flat for easy access and the two external pockets for a brolly and other long accessories have long zips for easy access. For anglers who want a great value for money solution, the Azur range features a traditional Rod Holdall in Small (6 tube), Medium (8 tube) and Large (10 tube) capacities. These are all 1.90m long for storing 16m poles and have a long external pocket for net handles and a brolly and a short pocket for shorter accessories. All Azur holdalls have a protective base, an adjustable shoulder strap and a carry handle.
Azur Rod Holdalls come in 3 sizes and have external pockets for accessories

Net storage comes in the form of the Matrix Stink Bag (left) or the Ethos Net & Accessory Bag with a built-in ‘stink bag’ (above).
W
ith anglers taking more gear than ever before efficient storage and transport solutions are becoming more important than ever. The days of using just a carryall type bag for bait, tackle and your nets are long gone and anglers now need separate solutions for bait, nets, accessories and seatbox accessories. The Matrix Ethos range covers just about all requirements and all of the luggage has been designed to be transported on a trolley/barrow or by hand.
THE MATRIX ETHOS RANGE COVERS JUST ABOUT ALL REQUIREMENTS Bait Solutions
Anglers are now very aware of the importance of keeping bait in the best condition possible, which is why the Ethos Bait Bag and the Ethos Tackle & Bait Carryall both have thermally lined compartments. This lining not only keeps the bait cool, it is also easy to wipe clean. Both of the bait bags have side pockets which can be used for accessories like bait pumps and meat cutters, or for extra bait like bags of pellets, leam and groundbait. The new Ethos Bait Bag is a compact bag with a remarkably large capacity and can accommodate up to 8 x 3.3 pint bait tubs, plus accessories in the side pockets. The Tackle & Bait Bag is a brilliant solution for anglers using a barrow or trolley. The huge capacity will accommodate all of the bait you could need for a match, plus accessories in the side pockets. Both bags have a padded carry handle and adjustable shoulder strap.
Net Storage
Taking more than one net is now the norm, with most match anglers having at least two, possibly three or even four nets, plus a landing net. This is why Matrix has several net transport options. The Matrix Stink Bag is a tough waterproof bag that will accommodate up to three nets. It has a full zip top for easy access and sealed seams to ensure water does not escape in transit. The Ethos Net and Accessory Bag is a hybrid bag with a difference. Available in Single and 2/3 Net options, the nets are placed in a waterproof ‘stink bag’ type pocket. There is also an open side pocket for large items like side trays. The main compartment folds open to reveal two large zipped pockets which can be used for storage of seatbox accessories or the Ethos Accessory Bags which are designed with adjustable dividers for the storage of feeders, spools, and other small accessories.
Traditional Storage
The Ethos Carryall is an all purpose carryall which has a side net pocket and a huge main compartment. Available in 55 litre and 65 litre capacities with additional side pockets, these classic carryalls are perfect for a wide range of tackle. Also available in the Azur range is the 45 litre and 55 litre Carryall which has all of the same features - side net compartment, large internal compartment and accessory side pockets.
Total Protection
All Matrix luggage is made from tough material designed for strength and continuous use and has a waterproof reinforced base which is scuff and wear resistant to ensure the product lives up to expectations. Padded carry handles, adjustable shoulder straps and fully zipped compartments and pockets are also common throughout the range.

Small Carp and F1’s Size 8 (1.27mm)
Silver Fish (on carp lakes) Size 8 (Yellow)
Normal Match Carp Size 10 or 12 (1.44/1.60mm)
Small Carp and F1’s Size 10 (Orange)
Bagging and Margin fishing Size 16 (2.00mm)
Normal Match Carp Size 12 (Red)
MATRIX SOLID ELASTIC
Confusion
MATRIX HOLLOW ELASTIC

HOOKS / REFLEX 4000 REEL
T
he Matrix hook range was launched in 2012 and made an immediate impact. Both Warren Martin and Les Thompson had Matrix hooks on their rigs to win over £81,000 in just two matches! Warren used the Carp Baggers to win the prestigious Fish ‘O’ Mania final in July and then Les destroyed the opposition a few weeks later in the Match This final to win Britain’s largest prize of £50,000 with the Carp Riggers.
What Makes The Difference
All Matrix hooks are made in Japan from the finest carbon steel, this ensures their strength and sharpness can be totally relied upon, but there’s more to a good hook than just the quality of the wire. The shape, profile and bend are equally important and Matrix has spent time getting this right. Their are two match carp hooks, the Carp Bagger has a spade end and is designed for pole, waggler and feeder fishing when you want to hook the bait directly on the hook. The Carp Riggers have a slightly out-turned eye and are designed for hair rigging baits using a knotless knot. The angle of the eye creates the perfect presentation for maximum hooking efficiency. Both of the carp hooks have the correct thickness of wire to cope with hard fighting carp. Using the same shape and profile as the Carp Riggers, the Feeder Rigger has a lighter wire with a fine micro barb which is perfect for hair rigging for bream and tench. The Carp Bagger, Carp Rigger and Feeder Rigger have a wide gape hybrid bend with a slightly in-turned point for maximum presentation and hooking efficiency.
Silver Fish Hooks
For silver fish there are three choices. Silver Baggers are strong match hooks designed for commercial fisheries where F1’s and big silver fish are the target. The barbless, short shank, crystal bend hook has a black nickle finish and is perfect for pellets, maggots and worm hookbaits. Super Match hooks have a short shank with a wide gape hybrid bend and a small micro barb. These hooks are designed for feeder, waggler and medium to heavy pole methods and offer great versatility. The Super Pole is a lighter wire hook with a modern ‘sweep’ bend making it perfect for maggots, casters and small sections of worm. The in-tuned point and small micro barb keeps fish losses to a minimum.
IN THE SPACE OF A FEW WEEKS LAST YEAR TWO ANGLERS WON A TOTAL OF £81,000.00 USING THE NEW MATRIX HOOKS!

The Reflex 4000
43
www.fishmatrix.co.uk
DESIGNED FOR UK SMALL WATER FEEDER FISHING AND EUROPEAN FLOAT FISHING WHAT MAKES THE REFLEX 4000 SO GOOD.
T
he Matrix Reflex 4000 is the perfect size for small water ‘commercial’ match fishing in the UK and European float fishing using Bolo tactics. Designed with an oversized large diameter spool, the Reflex delivers excellent casting performance when feeder and float fishing with strong 6 to 8lb line and also performs smoothly releasing line freely when Bolo fishing on moving waters.
Powerful Performance
The lightweight Reflex weighs just 250g, thanks in part to the compact graphite body, but produces deceptively powerful performance from the internal worm drive gearing, the nine ball bearings and the 5.1:1 gear ratio. This results in superb line lay and efficient cranking performance under pressure and is just one of the reasons why this understated model is so suitable for match carp fishing.
Smooth Fish-playing
For anglers who play fish off the drag there is a multidisc front drag system which offers a wide range of adjustment to suit personal preference. The easy to grip adjustment knob at the front of the spool is simple to adjust whilst playing a fish.
The Extras
Because the Reflex 4000 has been designed for a specific purpose it doesn’t have any of the unnecessary features often found on mass market ‘spinning’ reels, but does contain features which will make a difference. With many reels when
the bail arm is open for casting, it often drops down (moves position) and stops you controlling the line during the cast. The Rotor Brake on the Reflex 4000 stops the bail arm from moving and allows you to have complete line control during the cast, letting you feather the line without hindrance. It isn’t an immediately obvious feature, until you use the reel, but it makes a big difference to casting control. Like most high quality reels the Reflex has a hollow aluminium bail arm which holds a specially shaped line roller to minimise line twist often associated with continuous casting and retrieval. The shallow spool (150m - 0.23mm) is perfect for its intended use and an extra spool is supplied to give different line strength options.
Trusted And Tested
The Reflex has been tested extensively for many months on a wide range of venues, using a wide range of methods, and can be totally trusted to perform as you would expect.
THE LIGHTWEIGHT REFLEX WEIGHS JUST 250G, THANKS IN PART TO THE COMPACT GRAPHITE BODY, BUT PRODUCES DECEPTIVELY POWERFUL PERFORMANCE. See page 66 for Hooks, page 59 for Reels
