Welcome to the first ever Matrix Feeder Fishing Guide. As the name suggests the aim of this guide is to cover many aspects of feeder fishing with specific emphasis on the tackle you will need to master this productive style. There are two main forms of feeder fishing and therefore this guide is separated into two - there is the modern, commercial style (fishing on venues heavily stocked with carp) as well as the more traditional and general style (fishing natural venues for bream, tench, barbel, and other silver fish).
Over the coming pages we will look at rods, reels, lines, feeders, rigs and accessories explaining in detail when, why and how to use them. At the end we have also produced a classified section of the products we make that you can implement into your own feeder fishing to make it not only easier but more successful too. By the end of the following 48-pages you should be armed with more than enough information about the tackle and tactics you need to catch more fish than ever before – we hope you enjoy it.

COMMERCIAL WATER FEEDER FISHING MODERN COMMERCIAL WATERS HAVE REVOLUTIONISED FEEDER FISHING WITH NEW ROD DESIGNS AND ADVANCED FEEDER PRESENTATIONS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR MEDIUM SIZED CARP. THE FEEDER REVOLUTION Man-made commercial waters are generally small in size and full of hard feeding and hard fighting carp. Because of the stocking levels and the carp’s naturally greedy nature, feeder fishing is one of the most effective ways of fishing, especially when combined with a short hooklength fished bolt rig style. The use of man-made baits like pellets has also had a big effect on fishing styles and in recent years feeders have been developed to take advantage of not only the way fish feed in these waters but also what they feed on. When deciding to target these commercial venues you will need to ensure that you have the correct tackle to maximise not only your catch rate but also the enjoyment factor too! RODS As previously mentioned commercial venues tend to be quite small and therefore you need a short length rod to aid accurate casting as this will give you far more control over the cast. It is also important that you use a rod with a through action that will absorb
the fight of the fish correctly. When playing hardfighting carp at close range the weight of the feeder will be very close to the hook so a nice soft rod will absorb any sudden lunges and prevent hook pulls or line breakages from occurring. During this guide we will take a look in more detail at the type of rod you will need for such fishing as well as helping you to select the right reel to partner it with. FEEDER CHOICE Over the years many companies have designed feeders especially for these commercial venues, and by using such feeders you really will maximise your chances of success. However, in order to give yourself the best chance of winning a match on this type of venue it is very important that you pick the right style of feeder for the situation that faces you. Over the coming pages we will look at the three most popular styles of feeders for commercial venues which are the Method, Pellet and Inline Cage and help you to decide when and how to use them to best effect.

RIGS AND HOOKBAITS When fishing on the commercial-type venues almost all hookbaits will be presented on a Hair rig or band of some description and later in this guide we will cover the best options in detail. Whichever way you choose to present your bait it will be important that you pick a hook and
hooklength that is strong enough and reliable enough to land even the hardest fighting of carp. We would always recommend the use of short rigs whether you are using a method, pellet or inline cage and the majority of our team of expert commercial anglers would opt for a 4ins(10cm) hooklink.

::: COMMERCIAL WATERS
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
MODERN MAN-MADE COMMERCIAL WATERS PRESENT MANY CHALLENGES. SHORT ACCURATE CASTING HAS TO BE COMBINED WITH PERFECT FISH PLAYING ACTIONS. SHORT RODS Generally on the commercial waters you will only be fishing at short range, with casts no further than 40m usually required. Because of this short range it is definitely best to use short rods of 8ft, 9ft or10ft. These shorter rods make casting tight to features much easier and also make landing fish much easier too. In addition to the length of the rod, you also need to pay particular attention to the action of the rod as you need a nice, soft, through action to absorb the powerful fight of carp at close range to prevent hook pulls. CARPMASTER RODS You will be hard-pressed to find better rods for commercials than our legendary Carpmaster range, which are designed for use with method, pellet and small open-ended feeders. The 8ft Little Pig Carpmaster is especially suited to fishing the method in the margins or on narrow snake-type lakes and features a remarkably powerful back bone for handling large carp. The 9ft is perfect for up to 25 metres and the 10ft Carpmaster MK2 is a true all rounder that is ideal for ranges up to 40m with an increased handle length that
makes casting that much easier. A unique design feature of the Carpmaster rods is the removal of a joint from the middle of the rod which twopiece rods normally have. Instead they feature a short butt section followed by a long central section and then a quiver tip. This extended middle section gives unrivalled action both when casting and playing hard-fighting carp and make the Carpmaster rods the number one choice for commercial venues. METHOD MASTER RODS For those on a tight budget, the Method Master rods are an outstanding option as they have the correct actions for accurate casting and fishplaying. As the name suggests they are primarily designed for method feeder fishing, but are also perfect for pellet feeder plus small cage and open-end feeders. The Method Masters have a slightly stiffer butt section, when compared to the Carpmaster range, which gives a little more casting power and are available in different lengths from 9ft to 12ft, with the 9 and 10ft models being particularly suited to commercial venues.

www.fishmatrix.co.uk REEL CHOICE When using either the Carpmaster or Method Master rods you will need to balance them with a small, light reel as the more balanced the setup feels the greater your casting accuracy will be. The Aquos 4000 is the perfect partner for the short rods with its lightweight aluminium body. The Aquos 4000 has more than enough cranking power to quickly land large carp and an excellent front drag for fish-playing control. It will hold 150m of 0.23mm line and is ideal for casting feeders up to ranges of 40m. We recommend spooling your reel with a fast sinking, monofilament line when fishing commercials as you don’t want a line that snakes across the surface that can pull your feeder out of place. The Carpmaster range of mono has been specifically designed for modern commercial feeder fishing.

METHOD FEEDER FISHING THE MOST WIDELY USED FEEDER ON THE COMMERCIAL MATCH FISHING SCENE, THE METHOD FEEDER IS OFTEN THE MOST EFFECTIVE APPROACH FOR MATCH AND PLEASURE ANGLERS.
HOOPED OR OPEN? Firstly when choosing a method feeder you have two distinct styles in the Evolution range. The Hooped Method Feeders feature small plastic hoops down both sides, which enable your groundbait or softened micro pellets to grip better. This makes the hooped version better for medium and long range as well as fishing in deeper water. The Open Method Feeder doesn’t have any bait retaining hoops and is designed for close range and shallow water as it releases the bait quickly. Because both styles don’t have ribs across the feeder, they can be used with larger hookbaits without the fear of the bait getting crushed or trapped.

Both the hooped and open method feeders in our Evolution range are available in standard inline and also in Elasticated versions. The standard In-Line version has a unique design that enables the feeder to be changed quickly without the need to break down the end rig and this style of method feeder is allowed on all venues. Elasticated method feeders feature a removable stem with an elastic core that absorbs head shaking and lunges when a fish is under the rod tip and therefore help to reduce the chances of hookpulls occurring. The Matrix elasticated feeders come supplied with two stems giving you a heavy and light elastic option so you can pick the elastic that best suits the size of fish you will be angling for.

::: COMMERCIAL WATERS QUICK CHANGE As previously mentioned the Evolution In-line Method Feeder features a unique slot in the back and this slot enables you to change the size and style of feeder in seconds, without having to cut and re-tie any knots. This means you can change from a Hooped to an Open Method, or even an Evolution Pellet Feeder or Evolution Lead Clip in seconds. Another massive advantage of the Evolution is the fact the hooklength exits the feeder at the top meaning the hookbait stays closer to the free feed once it disperses from the feeder, than on conventional in-line designs. The Evolution Quick Change System is brilliant when catching lots of fish
SETTING UP AN IN-LINE METHOD FEEDER
1. To start setting up, thread a tail rubber onto your main line.
2. Tie a Rubber Quick Bead to the end of your line using a strong knot.
3. Attach a short hooklength to the Rubber Quick Bead.
4. Place your hook through the hole in the base of the feeder.
5. Place the Rubber Quick Bead through the same hole in the base.
6. Position your mainline through the slot in the feeder stem.
7. Push your tail rubber down over the complete stem.
8. The In-Line Method Feeder is now ready for loading with bait.

Squeeze and Feed Moulds are available in three sizes. Designed for Evolution Method Feeders they also work with most other makes of method feeder. The deep moulded ends accommodate most Method feeders and provide more movement for compression
EASY LOADING... In order to load an Evolution Method Feeder perfectly you will need to use one of the ingenious Squeeze and Feed Method Moulds. These also work with most other method feeders on the market. Simply place your hookbait into the mould and then fill it with the groundbait or damp pellets of your choice. Push the feeder face down into the mould, turn the mould over and squeeze both sides. The method feeder will release from the
The unique design of the base, with central slots and compression sides, enables the feeder to be ‘squeezed’ out mould perfectly loaded, with the hookbait on top and ready for casting. The Squeeze and Feed Mould is deeper than other moulds on the market, which allows you to use more bait on the feeder should you want.
LOADING A METHOD FEEDER USING THE SQUEEZE AND FEED MOULD
1. Start by placing your hookbait into the bottom of the Squeeze and Feed mould.
2. Now add your chosen groundbait and/or dampened pellets into the mould.
3. Fill the mould to the top and then push your feeder face down into the free feed.
4. Turn the mould upside down, give the sizes a squeeze and you’re ready for action!

THE PELLET FEEDER
DESIGNED FOR USE WITH DAMPENED PELLETS, THE PELLET FEEDER WILL AT TIMES BE A BETTER OPTION OVER THE MORE COMMONLY USED METHOD FEEDER... WHY IS THE PELLET FEEDER SO GOOD In recent years pellet feeders have started to dominate certain waters and can be used with pellets of all sizes. This makes them very useful on venues where small fish are a problem as pellets will create less cloud than groundbait and not attract the nuisance species so easily. Due to its design, the Evolution In-Line Pellet Feeder holds less bait than a method feeder and offer more of a ‘drip feeding’ approach. In addition, due to the shape of a pellet feeder, the feed can only exit from one side, which concentrates the fish into
feeder right where the hookbait will be placed. A further benefit of this style of feeder is that your hookbait is positioned inside the feeder amongst your free feed and therefore allows you to cast tight to features such a reeds and overhanging foliage without any danger of the hook becoming snagged. This is a massive advantage when fishing very tight to cover. Another benefit of the pellet feeder is that due to its shape it retains more bait as it falls through the water making it a great option when fishing in deep water as it ensures everything arrives on the bottom intact.

USING A PELLET FEEDER
1. Mount your hook pellet onto a Matrix Bait Aligner.
2. Scoop a small amount of softened pellets into the feeder.
HOW IT WORKS The Evolution Pellet Feeder features a scoop design, which makes loading very easy. Simply scoop the feeder into your dampened pellets until 2/3rds full, then push your hookbait into the feeder and finish filling with free offerings giving it a firm press to compact everything. Once the feeder has landed on the bottom the water will cause the compressed pellets to start expanding out of the feeder leaving a neat little pile of bait giving the fish the perfect target to home in on. Pellet feeders can also be used with other alternative baits such as chopped meat, hard pellets and hemp by adding a tiny amount of groundbait ‘cap’ to seal the feeder.
3. Place the pellet hookbait onto the part loaded feed.
4. Cover with a final layer of pellets and squeeze to secure it in the feeder.
QUICK CHANGE We currently make two sizes of pellet feeder (small and medium) and thanks to our unique Evolution design, which also features on our method feeders, you can swap from one size of feeder to another or one style of feeder to another without breaking anything down.

IN-LINE CAGE EXPLAINED... The best way to think about using an In-line Cage feeder is to relate it to using a small pole pot on the end of your pole where you introduce just a small amount of bait each time you drop in. Our In-Line Cage feeders come in small and medium sizes only and are the correct size to introduce enough bait for one feeding carp at a time, which also makes them perfect for winter fishing when you don’t need as much feed. A further benefit of the In-Line Cage is that it allows you to use larger hookbaits than you would on a method feeder,
3. Tie a Rubber Quick Bead to the end of your line using a strong knot.
4. Attach a short hooklength to the Rubber Quick Bead.
making it the ideal tactic when trying to select larger fish. When using an In-line cage feeder it can sometimes take a little time to get the swim going (certainly a bit longer than when using a method feeder with groundbait), but by using larger particles the fish you catch will usually be much bigger. When using this type of feeder the use of a short hooklength (around 4ins/10cm), which keeps the hookbait close to the feeder, is very important.

HOOKBAIT PRESENTATION
THERE ARE A HOST OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRESENT THE VARIETY OF HOOKBAITS THE MODERN COMMERCIAL FEEDER ANGLER HAS AT THEIR DISPOSAL. HERE WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR... THE SUPER STOP HAIR RIG The Super Stop Hair Rig is constructed by attaching a hook with a knotless knot and having a Super Stop tied to the end of the hair. These Super Stops fit onto the end of a Super Stop Baiting Needle and can then be pushed through the core of a soft hookbait like corn or meat until
they exit the other side. The stop then rotates on the end of the hair so it sits sideways against the bait and cannot pull back through. The Hair Rig is great for presenting baits such as soft boilies, meat, worms and corn and allows the hook to sit free of the bait, which makes hooking more efficient.
1. Place the Super Stop onto the Needle.
3. Pull the Super Stop off the needle end.
2. Push the Super Stop through your hookbait.
4. Turn the Super Stop to secure the bait.
MAKING A SUPER STOP HAIR RIG USING A KNOTLESS KNOT
1. Tie a Super Stop onto the hooklength line.
2. Thread the hooklength through the eye of the hook from the back to the front.
3. For most baits position the Super Stop about 12/15mm from the eye of the hook.
4. Wrap the hooklength around the shank from the eye down, 6 times.

BAIT ALIGNA This product was inspired by the big carp market and takes the concept of a bait band to a whole new level. The Bait Aligna replaces the need for a Hair Rig and simply slides down over the eye of the hook and onto the shank. You then use your Bait Bander tool to place a pellet in the loop on the back of the Aligna. The beauty of this product is that it extends the shank of your hook to a much more aggressive angle, which means you hook more fish!
BAIT BANDS Bait bands are designed for use with pellet and small dumbbell boilie hookbaits and are a small latex band that grips around the outside of the hookbait. These can be tied to the end of a Hair Rig. To place your bait into a bait band quickly it is best to use the Matrix Bait Bander tool. BOILIE SPIKES As the name suggests this handy device is designed for using with boilie hookbaits. The boilie spike is tied directly to a very short Hair Rig and allows you to screw your boilie on without the need for a baiting needle or bait stop. This is a very quick and easy method for hooking boilies. HOOKS We make a range of hooks that are designed especially for fishing heavily stocked commercial waters and presenting hookbaits in the styles previously covered. The Carp Riggers are designed for using with the knotless knot and have a special bend on the eye to aid hooking. Also available are the Carp Bander hooks, which also have a specially shaped eye designed for using with pellet bands and Bait Alignas. Both of these hooks are barbless and super-strong.
5. Thread the hooklength back through the eye from back to the front.
6. Tie a loop into the end of your hooklength and connect it to your Rubber Quick Bead.

GENERAL FISHING INTRODUCTION GENERAL FEEDER FISHING IS USUALLY DONE ON NATURAL TYPE WATERS LIKE LAKES AND RIVERS, FISHING FOR SPECIES SUCH AS TENCH, BARBEL, CHUB, BREAM AND OTHER SILVER FISH...
A TRADITIONAL APPROACH General feeder fishing covers a much wider range of waters and fish species, and can often be quite difficult to master compared to fishing in commercial waters. However, with a few well chosen feeder rig set-ups and the correct rod and reel choice, it can be an enjoyable and productive way of fishing. Often the venues you will be fishing will be rivers (both small and large) and large, natural lakes, therefore fishing at wide variety of ranges could be needed. For the purpose of this guide we have broken the general feeder fishing approach into two categories – short/medium range and long range and we will look in detail how you can master both styles.
BALANCED TACKLE IS ESSENTIAL As with all styles of feeder fishing it is important to select the correct tackle for the style of fishing you will undertake. Over the coming pages we will look at all of the essentials you will need including rods, reels, line, feeders and rigs. Whether you are fishing at short, medium or long range there is one thing that is of utmost importance every time and that is balance! By fishing with balanced tackle you will not only catch more fish but you will also enjoy your fishing much more too...

SHORT/MEDIUM RANGE FISHING WHEN FISHING SHORT AND MEDIUM RANGE THERE WILL BE A NUMBER OF FACTORS THAT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION, HERE WE EXPLORE THE CRUCIAL ONES...

The Horizon S-Class is perfect for short/ medium range feeder fishing and not just for bream as this catch of big roach proves
SHORT TO MEDIUM RANGE RODS
Progressive action for casting and fish-playing Powerful butt and carbon tips to improve distance Sensitive tip section for good fish-playing Perfect for braid and mono main line Casting distance from 20 to 60 metres
RODS This style of feeder fishing, usually on still waters for bream, or more recently carp, requires the use of a rod that has controlled casting power in the lower half combined with sensitivity in the tip section. This combination enables feeders to be cast accurately, whilst at the same time using small hooks and light hooklengths with confidence. The ideal rod lengths for this type of fishing are between 11ft (3.3m) and 13ft (3.8m), the shorter length is perfect lighter feeders and shorter range, whilst longer rods can handle larger feeders more comfortably. The Horizon S Class models are the ideal choice for this ‘traditional’ type of feeder fishing and offer outstanding quality and versatility. The 3.3m (11ft) makes an excellent bream and skimmer rod, whilst the longer 3.6m (12ft) and 3.8m (12.8ft) offer slightly more power for increased distance casting. Because of the smooth playing action of these models, all ‘S’ Class rods can also be used for carp fishing on open waters where increased distance casting is required. All of the ‘S’ Class rods have two equal length sections plus quiver tip design. This enables the rods to be transported made-up, but with the tip hanging next to the main section. With normal two sectioned rods the quiver tip is often under tension when transported made-up and can take on a slight, but permanent bend. The three quiver tips supplied with the ‘S’ Class are made of carbon which improves casting performance as they recover their position more quickly after the feeder has been released on the cast. Fibreglass tips are also available for anglers who prefer a more through-action tip. All Horizon S Class rods are fitted with high quality, lightweight single leg guides for minimum impact of the rods brilliant action.
REELS For short/medium range feeder fishing you will need a medium-sized reel, something too small will not get you the distance you need whilst a reel that is too big will be heavy and unbalanced on your rod. With this in mind the Aquos reel in both 4000 and 5000 is ideal for anglers that wish to fish short/medium range. These reels are lightweight and have 6 ball bearings and a balanced rotor for smooth performance when constantly retrieving feeders. The 5.1:1 gear ratio offers the correct balance of power and speed. Both models come with shallow spools which take 150m of 0.25mm making them perfect for braid, which should be your first choice of main line for this traditional style of fishing due to its lack of stretch and therefore superior sensitivity for transmitting indication to the tip. The ideal reel for this style of general feeder fishing is an Aquos 4000 or 5000 size with braid main line like Matrix Submerge

::: GENERAL FEEDER FISHING
FEEDER SELECTION The open-end feeder is available in both a wire cage and plastic format and are designed for use with groundbait and is a very popular design with bream anglers and also anglers fishing International feeder matches where the use of method feeders are banned.
22 Matrix Feeder Guide 2015.indd 22

www.fi shmatrix.co.uk www.fi shmatrix.co.uk
WIRE CAGE FEEDERS Wire cage versions are more robust and release the groundbait more quickly than plastic feeders, making them perfect for shallow water or when a very quick release of bait is required. Because of their design, they also release a small amount of groundbait as they fall through the water, so by using a large particle groundbait you can create a column of bait through the water that will attract fish into the swim. Once in the swim, the fish will often follow the feed down to the bottom where they will start feeding properly, at which time you can change to a plastic feeder which will release all of the groundbait on the bottom. PLASTIC FEEDERS The plastic version are best used with a fine particle groundbait and are perfect for carrying a lot of live feed bait like casters, worms and bloodworm. The bait inside this style of feeder is less exposed to the water and therefore less bait is dispersed as it falls through the water, making them a great choice for deeper venues. A benefit of plastic feeders is that they tend to rise from the bottom more quickly when being retrieved which is great for snaggy or weedy swims. For an even quicker lift from the bottom, you can use a Matrix Finned Feeder. The finned feeder will descend through the water slower and by coupling it with a long hooklength you can often pick up fish ‘on the drop’. A great tip is to start a session using a wire cage feeder to create a column of feed in mid water to attract the fish in and then to change to a plastic feeder to concentrate the feeding fish on the bottom.
FEEDER SET-UPS All Matrix feeders have a swivel built into the design, which helps to reduces prevent the feeder spinning on the retrieve. This swivel can also be used to attach the feeder directly to your main line to create a free running rig which is a popular river type set-up. Alternatively, if you prefer to use a paternoster set-up for bream, the feeder can be tied (or clipped) directly to the end of the paternoster. FEEDER SIZE A feeder needs to be heavy enough to cast the required distance and hold bottom (especially on on moving water) so make sure you take this into account. In addition the amount of bait a feeder can carry is also crucial. For most situations, especially if you’re targeting shoal fish like bream, a large feeder is much better as it enables you to get more bait into the swim and hold the fish for longer. However, in winter when the fish are not feeding as heavily a smaller feeder carrying less bait is a better choice. Finned Feeders fall through the water slowly but rise up in the water quickly on the retrieve

LONG RANGE FISHING FISHING AT LONG RANGE WILL PUSH YOU AND YOUR TACKLE TO THE LIMIT AND IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT IT YOU NEED TO HAVE THE RIGHT TOOLS!

www.fishmatrix.co.uk BRAIDED MAIN LINE Due to the fine diameter and supple nature of braid it is essential when long range feeder fishing. In addition the lack of stretch in braid means that you get excellent bite indication back on the quiver tip even when the fish is picking up the bait at ranges in excess of 100m away. However, due to the fine diameter it is essential that you couple the main line with a strong monofilament shock leader to ensure that a heavy feeder doesn’t cause you to ‘crack-off’ on the cast. A line such as the 12lb (0.28mm) Carpmaster mono makes the ideal shock leader. LONG POWERFUL RODS If ever a style of fishing required the right tools for the job, long range feeder fishing is it. Put simple, if you aren’t using the right tackle you just can’t compete with those who are. To fish at ranges in excess of 80m, you need a rod that is at least 4.0m (13ft) long with the power to handle heavy feeders. The suitably named Horizon rods offer outstanding casting performance and are available in three lengths from 4.0m (13.2ft) to 4.5m (14.5ft) they are capable of casting feeders from 120g (4oz) upwards and will hit distances of more than 120m in the right hands! Horizon rods have an ultra long spigot on the short butt joint which stiffens up the lower part of the rod and creates massive power. This power is then transferred through the middle section to the forgiving tip section, resulting in enormous tip speed during the cast. To improve performance even further, large diameter SiC guides on both the rod and the quiver tips reduce friction and also enables shock leader knots to pass through freely. The two quiver tips on the Horizon rods are made from high quality carbon, which recovers very quickly on the cast again adding the distance you can achieve. Despite all of their casting power the Horizons have good playing actions too, and the tip sections combined with the quiver tips are perfectly designed for playing big bream, even on small hooks and light hooklengths.
LARGE REELS To maximise distance casting a large reel is important and the Super Feeder 5500 is designed for the job. This ‘compact’ Big Pit type reel has a large but shallow aluminium spool making it perfect for braided mainlines like the Submerge Sinking Feeder Braid. Weighing only 400g, thanks to the lightweight graphite body, this superb reel has 8 ball bearings, a roller bearing and a retrieve speed of 4.9:1 (80cm of line per handle turn). This results in a smooth, quick retrieve, which is essential when fishing at distance. Combine a Super Feeder 5500 reel with any of the Horizon rods and Submerge Sinking Feeder Braid and you can be sure that when it comes to your tackle, you aren’t going to be left short.
EUROPEAN OPTIONS Designed primarily for the European market, but equally useful in the UK, we also produce two other feeder rod ranges that can be used for long distances. The new Matrix Legend is a traditional 3 section design that covers mid to long range feeder fishing on a wide range of venues and the Carboflex 130g is designed for use with the largest feeders and makes a great rod for large rivers in the UK like the Trent, Severn or Wye.

::: GENERAL FEEDER FISHING
Horizon Protector Sleeves protect the line and create a ‘boom’ effect which reduces tangles.
DISTANCE FEEDERS For fishing at extreme range the use of a ‘bullet’ type distance cage feeder such as our aptly named Horizon is recommended. The aerodynamic shape and weight-forward design automatically adds casting distance and accuracy. The slim diameter cage behind the weight forms a smooth aerodynamic shape that when loaded is very stable in flight. When setting up the Horizon Feeder on your line it is worth using an Horizon Protector Sleeve as they protect the swivel of your heavy feeder from weakening the line during repeated casting. These sleeves also create a small ‘boom’ effect that holds the hooklength away from the feeder when casting, which helps to prevent tangles when giving it a massive cast.
26
Horizon Feeders have an aerodynamic weight at the base for stability when casting.

THE RIGHT GROUNDBAIT MIX Casting at extreme range puts a lot of pressure on the groundbait in the feeder and if your mix isn’t right it will come out in flight. The design of the Horizon Feeder helps prevent this because the weight at the base of the feeder offers quite a bit of support as the cast is made. As a general rule your groundbait mix needs to be damper (and therefore stickier) than your normal mix and make sure you press in firmly into the feeder.
HORIZON FEEDER BENEFITS
Aerodynamic shape for extreme distance casting Bomb shaped weight at front for stability Can be used with Cage Coats to slow down feed Tough metal wire construction Excellent in smaller sizes for twitching baits
CAGE COAT SUCCESS Cage Coats are a simple way of reducing the speed at which your groundbait leaves the feeder and they also help keep the bait in the feeder when casting. When fishing at range you are often casting to where the fish are, so feeding large quantities of bait to hold fish in the swim isn’t so important. What is important is that there is some groundbait available close to the hookbait for the fish to feed on. By slowing the release of bait from the feeder you give yourself more time to get a bite, which is a huge advantage when fishing at extreme range. Cage Coats can be cut to different sizes before fitting to suit different feed rates

::: GENERAL FEEDER FISHING
PRESENTING A HOOKBAIT
HERE WE EXPLORE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS OF PRESENTING YOUR HOOKBAITS WHEN FEEDER FISHING IN A MORE TRADITIONAL, GENERAL STYLE...
28 Matrix Feeder Guide 2015.indd 28
17/07/2015 16:06:42
www.fishmatrix.co.uk DIRECT HOOKING The simplest, most basic way to present a natural bait is to place it directly onto the hook. This is commonly done when using natural baits such as maggots, casters, bloodworm, chopped worm and corn. Often the hook will be completely masked by the bait, reducing the chances of the fish being spooked by the hook. For small baits it is best to use a spade-end hook as they weigh less than eyed hooks and have less impact on the bait. There are several hooks in the Matrix range that are suitable for feeder fishing with small natural baits, with the most popular being the All Round and Super Match. For inert baits like chopped worms and casters our unique SW Feeder hook features a flattened section that holds the bait on the shank more securely. This is very useful when fishing at long range where the force of the cast can sometimes move the bait out of position. HAIR RIG OPTIONS More anglers are now using pellets as feed for general feeder fishing, especially for bream and barbel and the hair rig offers the best presentation of a pellet hookbait. The Feeder Rigger Method Hair Rigs pre-tied hooks come with a pellet band on the hair and can be used for general feeder fishing, as well as method feeder fishing.
Unique flattened section increases strength and holds baits like chopped worms and casters securely
BAIT ALIGNA For those anglers that wish to take the concept of the Hair Rig to another level you can of course use our Bait Alignas (that were originally designed for commercial water fishing) for presenting a pellet hookbait. These simply thread down the hooklink and over the eye of the hook to extend the shank at an aggressive angle that helps to hook fish and prevent hook pulls. The Bait Aligna has a small loop on the back that holds the pellet and is loaded simply by using a Bait Bander tool.

::: SET UP CORRECTLY
FEEDER HARDWARE
THE CORRECT HARDWARE (FEEDER ARMS AND RESTS) CAN MAKE LIFE MUCH EASIER. THE CORRECT PLACING OF YOUR ROD IS VERY IMPORTANT AND STABILITY IS ALSO A KEY FACTOR WHEN FEEDER FISHING. SET UP CORRECTLY Setting up correctly when feeder fishing is very important. The correct positioning of your rod for maximum bite detection is the most important thing, followed by comfort. Also, having your bait positioned correctly for easy feeder filling makes life easier and quicker.
FEEDER ARMS Matrix make a brilliant feeder arm called the 3D Mega Feeder Arm. This will fit onto all 25mm, 30mm and 36mm seatbox legs, is fully adjustable and telescopic, and offers rock solid stability thanks to the twin arm design. The 3D Mega Feeder Arm also has a 90째 upturned end which

www.fishmatrix.co.uk BAIT PLACEMENT Matrix offers a wide range of bait placement options. There are Aluminium side trays, which offer a large rock-solid base for groundbait bowls and bait tubs. The new 3D 6 Box version comes with a removable cover that protects your bait from rain or sun. There are also Groundbait Bowl and Hoop systems in various sizes which fit onto seatbox legs and are designed just for groundbait, these are great as secondary bait placement. A new release for this year is the 3D EVA Side Tray which comes in two sizes and has a protective EVA lip around the outer of the tray. These trays have been designed to use with the Matrix EVA Rectangular Groundbait Bowl and standard sized bait tubs and are perfectly sized for maximum efficiency.
The 3D Mega Feeder Arm can be used in an upright position for river feeder fishing keeps the line away from the arm when the rod is in position, reducing the chance of snagging. This rest can be used in a low position for stillwater fishing or pointing upwards for big river fishing where line needs to be kept out of the water. FEEDER RESTS There are three different front rests in the Matrix range to suit personal preference. The Side Stop Feeder Rest has an upturned ‘ball’ end which prevents the rod being pulled in when fishing for carp. The main part of this rest in also profiled with small bumps which give extra stability to the rod when in position. There is also a flat version of this rest without upturned end. This rest works well on commercials and is also popular with traditional feeder fishing anglers fishing for bream. Finally there is the extra long 60cm Large Feeder Rest. This has a smooth main part which allows for very small rod movements to get the perfect position. This is a popular rest in Europe when bream fishing. For supporting the butt of the rod the perfect solution is the 3D EVA Butt Rest. This short armed rest fits all seatbox legs and has a simple EVA top which is wide enough for easy rod placement but small enough to be unobtrusive.
Use a side tray to keep everything close to hand
