Applied Performing Arts AS/A2 Level Examination Board: ED-EXCEL Aims of Course This course is designed to give students an understanding of all aspects of performing arts, and combines it with the opportunity to specialise in either performance or production support. While developing their own skills, students will simultaneously gain insights into the nature of the industry. Current employment opportunities, constraints and the issues facing professionals working within the performing arts sector are all reflected in the course.

Programme of Study at AS Level and A2 Level AS Units UNIT 1: Exploring Skills for Performance. (internally assessed.) Students choose one or more area of study (music, drama, music technology) and work on a performance in that area e.g. Ensemble skills in music or Physical theatre. UNIT 2: Planning for an Event (internally assessed.) Students work in groups of 3-12 and plan an event and take on a role either in production or performance. UNIT 3: Performing to a commission (externally assessed.) The exam board set a task similar to Unit 2. This is set in September each year and completed by July. A2 Units UNIT 4: Employment opportunities in the Performing Arts. (internally assessed.) Students research job roles in the industry. They assess their own skills and apply this to one of the job roles. UNIT 5 OR UNIT 6 Unit 5: Advanced Performance Practice. (internally assessed.) Unit 6: Advanced Production Practice (internally assessed.) Students build on their skills in what-ever area they have chosen to concentrate on. Their progress will be assessed based on their preparation and performance. UNIT 7: Production Delivery (externally assessed.) Students plan and put on a complete production. All aspects of the event need to be planned for and professionally executed.

Approaches to Learning This qualification encourages talent by offering a genuinely practical approach. There are no written exams, assessment is solely though portfolio and performance. The vocational emphasis of this qualification encourages students to apply working methods used by professionals – as individuals, in teams and with clients, commissioners and audiences.

Who is this course aimed at? This course is aimed at students who found the GCSE course enjoyable and who wish to discover more about performing arts sector.
