The London quartet known as Telegram have just come back from playing SXSW for the first time and are now working on their second album. The band consists of Matt Saunders (vocals/guitar), Pip Stakem (guitar), Oli Paget-Moon (bass) and Jordan Cook (drums). After forming the band in 2012, their first two gigs couldn’t of been any different; the first was at a vintage shop and the second on BBC 6 Music on Marc Riley’s show. Here’s what frontman Matt Saunders had to say about Bowie, £2 Turkish pizzas, and Michael Jackson’s BAD.

Watch their video for “Follow” here.

Matt Saunders

FOXES Magazine Where are you guys all from? Matt Saunders: We’re often described as being Anglo-Welsh. I grew up in Caerphilly South Wales and moved to London when I was 17 to study art. Oli did the opposite and, although born in Bermuda, grew up in London but moved to Swansea, Wales to study. Jordan is from Bristol, Pip a staunch Londoner. We’re essentially a band formed and from London, although there are Welsh roots in our make-up. FOXES: When did you guys first meet? Matt: We met through friends and parties really. There are monthly nights we’ll all congregate at and the conversations over tastes and potential band plans started there. FOXES: Had you been in other bands before Telegram? Matt: Everyone except myself had been in other bands prior to Telegram; I’d only written and performed solo. Oli was in a Roxy Music cover band called Proxy Music for a while, Jordan and Pip have been in a bunch of bands. When Jordan made the move from Bristol to London, (around the time Telegram got serious) a fair few bands in Bristol lost their drummer...

FOXES: Do you remember the first time you were really introduced to good music? Matt: I didn’t grow up surrounded by great music, or have a parent or sibling that introduced me to stuff, instead I had to really sniff things out. I made friends with guys at school that were a lot older, they’d leave for collage and come back during the holidays and play stuff on cassette in the car. They’d always play songs I’d never heard before and I’d always be asking what this or that was. I also remember a neighbour, this guy in his 40’s that had this room full of records and a great 70’s kick back and listen style leather easy chair with a footrest and a pair of headphones that hung off the side of the arm. He was a Jazz drummer and played in a band that would do New Years Eve gigs at Ronnie Scots Club in London. In smalltown Wales that was pretty cool. I’d go round and listen to a lot of Jazz and blues and he’d occasionally stick on the Stones, or The Velvets. FOXES: What was the first record you bought or that was given to you? Matt: I think the first record I remember having and playing was a Michael Jackson record, BAD. It had come out a while earlier but a girl who lived nearby and used to babysit me would bring it round and either she gave it to me, or I acquired it via other means I just remember being about 10 years old and the whole moonwalking, smooth criminal, part of a leather jacket gang thing was cool to a kid, it was the Bowie effect for kids in the 90’s.

Oli Paget-Moon

FOXES: Who’s your #1 hero? Matt: Hero’s are hard to come by, but I genuinely think that Bowie deserves that title. He was the most honest and exciting performer who managed to flip Rock and Roll on its head. Nothing since him has felt as original. To bow out with such dignity and with a record (Blackstar) that reflects so much, is heroic in itself. FOXES: Major influences? Matt: Early Roxy, Early Eno, DEVO, The Ramones, Television, Bowie, The Velvets, The Stooges loads of single song one hit oddities. FOXES: Is there anything else you pursue creatively aside from music? Matt: I practice a lot of hobby art, sic-fi sculpture for example which I don’t take very seriously but is essentially and potentially worth a lot of money. In our spare time we all like to get together and cook/knit/ tend our gardens. It’s good to clear your head before studio time. FOXES: What’s your favorite spot in London to grab a bite? Matt: The Uludag, a turkish restaurant on Kingsland Road near where I live, they do a turkish pizza for £2 called a Lahmacun which is a crispy flatbread base with mince meat and tomato sauce with loads of salad and jalapeño peppers, with garlic and chilli dressing thats rolled up like a wrap. £2!!! It hits the spot every time. If it’s a sit down affair there’s a place called Red Art Cafe, and we go for baked potato’s. FOXES: What’s coming up for you guys next? Matt: Festivals over the summer and finishing and recording a second record. Some more American dates are lined up for October time but we’re talking about doing a residency for a couple of weeks in L.A and New York around the end of the summer...

Tess Parks. One of the sweetest, genuine people you’ll ever meet. To make things even more exciting, she’s incredibly talented. From having her first record put out with Alan McGee, the man who signed Oasis (her favorite band), to recording an entire album with the legend that is Anton Newcombe, she’s already accomplished what might’ve taken anyone else 20 years to tackle. We talked about London, the laws of attraction and what’s next for her this year.

Listen to the new track “Groove Is In the Heart” from Anton and Tess here.

FOXES: So, what made you come to London, what pulled you? Tess: I just liked all of the music coming out of here. As soon as I finished high school I needed an excuse to get as far away as possible so I got into the photography program at University FOXES Magazine: Where are you right now? of Arts London, went there for a year and then kind of realTess Parks: I am in Dartford. Where are you? izedAARON I wanted SINCLAIR to take pictures and not go to lectures and study PHOTOGRAPHY other people’s art. It’s what the lecturer wants to talk about, it’s FOXES: I’m in Los Angeles. not necessarily what you want to talk about. It was nice to be Tess: Aw, jealous. I’ve never been to California, but I’m hoping to go in the next couple of months. I haven’t heard an given a project and guidelines and to work in the confines of things, but you can easily do that in life if you’re strict enough accent like yours in a while. with yourself. I live with my boyfriend now, we met at a Brian FOXES: I believe Alex at Fuzz Club Records was the Jonestown Massacre concert incidentally. He plays in the band one that turned us on to your music. They also told that Anton and I put together when we toured the record we put out and we incidentally met a year before, it was super us about Lilly Creightmore. Tess: Oh cool! Yeah, when we did the photos for this feature weird. My whole life has been this kind of weird synchronicity.

M I

in Berlin with Miriam, Lilly and I and our friend Rory, who is also a photographer, had this air bnb with blank walls and an amazing staircase so we shot there. I take pictures too so it was like four photographers geeking out! After the shoot we went to all of these abandoned buildings in Berlin. FOXES: Wow, that sounds really cool. So you’re from Canada and grew up in Toronto specifically? Tess: Mhmm, then I moved to London when I was 17. I’ve lived here, off and on, for about 8 years now. Have you been to Toronto?

FOXES: I’ve been to Victoria and Vancouver. Tess: Toronto is good. It’s cheap and there’s good stuff there. It’s just when you’ve been somewhere for too long and you’re like “okay, I’ve done this enough.” I don’t like going back there very much anymore. I was in Toronto for 4 months over Christmas and it was nice for the first little bit and through till Christmas and New Years and then it was still cold and still snowing and I didn’t feel like going out. I was in a bad headspace and I was staying with my parents and I hasn’t stayed with them for that long in a very long time. You just walk around and you’re like “I’ve seen all these streets.” When graffiti doesn’t change enough, like, even the street art ’s been there for so long and you aren’t excited about new things on the street. I hate London in a way, but at least things are forever changing and there are different areas to discover.

FOXES: How did you connect with Anton? Tess: He’s friends with Alan McGee and I put out my first record with Alan, which is so cool. Anton started retweeting my stuff and then in late January 2014 I decided to go to France, my dad was going to conference there, and so I just hopped along. My good friend lives in Berlin and I wanted to come visit him and I thought “Oh, fuck it. I’ll message Anton Newcombe and see if I can just meet him.” I was purely a fan just wanting to meet a hero. He suggested we do some songs together and then the day before I went to Berlin I went to Père Lachaise Cemetery and saw Jim Morrison’s grave and Oscar Wilde’s. I’m the kind of person who loves going to the graves of people I respect. Now, Anton didn’t know I went there and then we finished the record in 2014 and he goes “Let’s call this record I Declare Nothing,” which is like a riff on what Oscar Wilde said at the border. Then on tour we covered 5 to 1 by The Doors, and I found it all so weird! I believe in the law of attraction. If you think of something enough, good or bad, it’ll come to you somehow. I’m a huge Oasis fan, do you love Oasis? FOXES: I do love Oasis. I guess when I was a baby I would really love listening to it too. Tess: Me too! But, like, so I was 14 waiting to see Oasis and these guys are the reason I picked up a guitar and they were the first show I ever went to. I mean, I heard Supersonic on the radio when I was 4 and I was like “whoa, whoa, whoa.” Then I was 21 when I met Alan McGee. I devoted so much of my life to Oasis and loving this band so much. FOXES: Now, if you had to pick Noel or Liam... Tess: [laughs] It’s like picking your favorite child.

FOXES: How do you feel musically you’ve changed since the first album you put out? Tess: I was someone growing up that never thought I would even release a record, let alone have it be put out by someone who, if I was ever gonna release a record, that would be the person. Getting signed with the same dude that signed Oasis... it’s like “okay, haha.” It’s too beautiful, it’s too nice, I don’t know how to react to it because it’s so fucking nice! It’s nice to be validated by the people you have the most respect for. That first record was recorded in like two weeks in a basement in Toronto. So, that was more my project, and then working with Anton it was next level. He knows a lot more of what he’s doing than me and my friends [laughs]. FOXES: Do you have a spirit animal? Tess: I had a shaman come to my house and she told me my spirit animal is two white doves. The story behind her was she woke up one morning and could speak 11 different tribal secret languages, she could just do that. Whatever, so weird. FOXES: Where did the song Cocaine Cat come from? Tess: I wrote that song when I was 17, in London. It was words first, a poem I wrote at like 6 in the morning. I was staying at this hotel and they had these big cartons of milk so I remember drinking milk out of a wine glass and it was a tall building in Pimlico, I came to check out the University I was going to go to. I wrote it in a minute, and none of the words have changed. It’s weird to release something 7 years after you’ve written it! I put chords to it later when I went home. It’s one of my oldest songs. FOXES: That reminds me of Jack White’s Lazaretto album and how he kind of went through all of his old journals and stuff he wrote when he was younger and pieced stuff together. That must be interesting to look back like that. Tess: Totally. I still don’t know what the song means though! I mean, I was 17, I hadn’t taken drugs. Someone told me that a cocaine cat was a 1920s jazz term and stuff, which is cool. When I was 9 years old I wrote little novels. I wrote a whole novel about a doctor, it was called Doctor Paul and I was just writing like a doctor, not knowing any terminology or anything, just making it up.

FOXES: Yeah, and you don’t have as much restraint when you’re writing. I feel like people get too much in their own heads the older you get. Tess: Yeah and when you’re writing stories or poems just for you, you’re not thinking “Will people like this?” I don’t write like that now, but there is that idea that people will think it’s shit. Especially following up, you want to stay consistent. I have a record that’s ready now that I really like, but it’s not as well produced as the past ones and so it’s not the right time for me to put something like that out, I think. FOXES: Do you feel that Rock n Roll and fashion still coincide with each other? Like, The Stones had amazing fashion and it was almost as important as the music they put out. People would be as excited about what Mick Jagger was going to come out wearing as they would be about what song he was going to start off with. Tess: That was my first thought when you said that, The Rolling Stones! Incidentally the town I live in is where Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are from. I’m like a block away from where they went to school. I don’t know. I can’t afford clothes really. I like the designer stuff and I pay attention to it and I like watching the runway stuff and reading Vogue and seeing what’s good, but I normally buy clothes from charity shops and I think it’s important to look good, but I don’t think designers were quite as involved with music in the 60s as they are now; like, obviously, Saint Laurent, blah, blah, blah, blah. It makes sense though. I haven’t really done anything where I’m promoting a fashion brand or get sent free shit. If I was offered it and I liked it then obviously I would wear it. I do think it’s more fun too when you don’t have money to buy clothes and then you find things that you really like for really cheap. FOXES: I know you said that Oasis was the first show you ever went to, but what was the first record you ever bought or that was given to you? Tess: The first record that was ever given to me was Aqua, like Barbie girl Aqua. Then the first CD I ever bought with my own money was What’s The Story Morning Glory? Which is so fucking cool. Most people are like “Oh, Sum 41, or Blink 182.” First vinyl was probably another Oasis one.

FOXES: What’s next? Tess: Well, I think Anton and I are going to make another record. We’re talking about it now. I’m sitting on a lot of other stuff that I’m waiting to put out too. I’m just gonna keep writing and taking more pictures. Just trying to stay happy and positive!

mystic braves Photography Daria RitchKobayashi Words Julian de la Celle

Since their formation in 2011, Mystic Braves have become one of LA’s most prolific psychadelic bands. Consisting of Julian Ducatenzeiler (guitar & vocals), Tony Malacara (bass & vocals), Shane Stotsenberg (guitar & vocals), Cameron Gartung (drums), and Ignacio Gonzalez (organ/tambourine) these guys are constantly writing, and constantly playing live. I spoke to Ignacio about Los Angeles, the best tacos in town and what’s to come.

FOXES: Where are you guys all from? Ignacio Gonzalez: All the guys except for me are from down south, San Diego area. I’m the only LA native. Tony lives in SD and the rest of us in Echo Park. FOXES: Do you remember how you all met and eventually formed Mystic Braves? Ignacio: Julian and Tony have known eachother from their San Diego days. They played music together for a while and then eventually they formed Blackfeet Braves with Cameron and Shane. Then they all moved to Echo Park and I joined and we started making tunes and playing around. FOXES: You were originally called Blackfoot Braves, then transitioned to Mystic Braves, why the name change? Ignacio: We had to change it. We got a cease and desist from a bigger band. It was bullshit, but it didn’t matter the music is still the same. We’re just intested in making tunes. FOXES: Do you have a spirit animal? Ignacio: A frog.

FOXES: Do you feel LA has a pretty supportive music scene in the sense that bands will go to each other’s gigs and push each other to succeed? Ignacio: There is definitely a great music community in Los Angeles. A lot of people play in eachother’s bands and play shows together. I love what a lot of my friends are doing and try to support them in any way I can. I don’t think we push each other to succeed, I think we all grow together while collaborating and generating music that is beyond the common institutionalized notions of what it means to be a successful band. There’s a lot of diversity and it’s great to see different kinds of bands be friends and really appreciate one another regardless of “genre”.

FOXES: A lot of people say that there are a lot of “fake” people in LA that will be your best friend up until the point where it’s no longer beneficial to them and some feel like LA is the complete opposite, how do you feel about that? Ignacio: “Fake” people exist everywhere. Especially in major cities. I’m not really interested if people like me or not or think I’m fake as much as I don’t care if someone is being fake to me. If they are being nice then so be it. I think it’s pretty clear to know what true friendship is. If not then bummer.. At least people are being nice.

FOXES: What inspires you guys to write music/lyrics? Are songs brought on my real events or feelings personal to you? Ignacio: Yes. A lot of the songs and lyrics are about events, struggles, happenings. Songwriting is a personal thing. If someone can relate to it then that’s great. FOXES: Do you remember the first record you ever bought or that was given to you as a gift? Ignacio: First cassette I ever got was the Ghostbusters soundtrack. First CD was “How to Multiply” it was a hip hop tutorial about math. First record was this band called Papa Do Run Run. They were a Beach Boys cover band I saw when I was a kid. FOXES: Do you remember the first concert you ever went to? Ignacio: WAR at Pomona Fairgrounds. FOXES: Talk about your role in Lollipop Records. You are one of the main founders, right? Ignacio: Yeah. Lolipop is a label and a recording studio. We put out stuff we like and music we feel the world needs to hear. I produce albums in the studio along with my partner and good friend Wyatt Blair.

FOXES: Who is your #1 hero? Ignacio: My sister Cat. FOXES: Are you into film, and if so, what would you recommend someone to watch? Ignacio: I like film, but I’m not anyone to recommend anything. I spend my extra time listening to records. FOXES: Do you have a favorite spot to grab a bite to eat in LA? Ignacio: Señor Fish on Sunset in Echo Park has a killer happy hour on tacos. FOXES: What’s next for you guys? Ignacio: We’ve just put out our 3rd album “Days of Yesteryear” so we will be doing some touring in the states and Europe this year. We never stop writing so we will keep making tunes as long as we can.

Watch their video for “Desert Island” here.

Words Melissa Klatsia

Their name may inspire thoughts of Kraut Rock but Autobahn’s sound is far removed from chrome laden Techno. Definitive of a post-punk era where desolation licks from the shadows and gothic lyrics bear witness to the alluring nature of suicide as a form of escape from the type of palpable loneliness that only a northern band could relate. Frontman Craig Johnson took us through some influences and experiences on his return from the U.S. having just performed at SXSW.

Watch their video for “Immaterial Man” here.

FOXES Magazine: Do you remember the first live show you ever went to? Craig Johnson: Yeah it was… it was…. there [were] two. I saw Elton John when I was a kid, who was incredible. Then the first show I went to out of choice was this band from Leeds, [called] The Music at Bridlington Pier. Kings of Leon supported them. FOXES: Do you remember the first record you ever bought? Craig: The first record? Like a physical record or the first record? The first album that I bought was probably, “What’s The Story Morning Glory” by Oasis and then the first vinyls were David Bowie singles given to me by my mum. They were the first like, vinyls I owned. I can’t remember the first actual vinyl I bought to be honest. The first album I bought was definitely that Oasis album. They had a big impact on us all. They were a gateway band to The Velvets and Jesus and Mary chain for sure. FOXES: What would be your spirit animal? Craig: An animal? A giraffe. I like giraffes. They just look nice, don’t they? They’ve got a nice long neck and they’re kind. I like a giraffe; they’re good. I like giraffes and I like zebras. They’re nice. I remember feeding a giraffe. They like popcorn. FOXES: How was it recording at “The Nave” for your album “Dissemble”? Craig: Yeah, it was like a disused church. It had just been renovated. There was a lot of nice equipment we got to work with. There was a lot of great outboard, which we got to use. It changed the sound of what we recorded because of the space for sure. Lots of natural reverb.

FOXES: (I’m from Macclesfield.) Was “Unknown Pleasures” a major influence on your music? Craig: I think Martin Hannetts production had an influence on the overall record sound. We had the material we were working with but we probably referenced his production at times. FOXES: How important do you think it is that we support independent music and why? Craig: Well it’s important because there’s not a lot of money in it. Like, if people didn’t get out there and support it, then there’s a lot of stuff that wouldn’t get out there. It would still get made and get heard but only on the local scene. FOXES: Do you think there should be a speed limit on the German Autobahn? Craig: [Laughs] I dunno, strange question. I dunno, when we were there it was fine. Let’s go with no. FOXES: Thoughts on gentrification? Craig: Yeah, things have changed. It’s everywhere. I don’t like it but as a band we don’t really... we’re not political. We don’t go and get involved. It’s not a nice thing that’s happened though.

FOXES: Do you think aesthetically speaking that beauty is inextricably intertwined with sadness? Craig: Yes definitely. I mean that’s what our music’s about. You can romanticise, like, death. A lot of it [the music] is about romanticising. You can’t escape it. Probably. FOXES: Can you explain the joke about horses’ latitudes and hearses attitudes please? (Guardian reference) Craig: Yeah, I didn’t get that either. When the Guardian wrote that, who knows what they were trying to say. I mean, I know that there is a picture of a hearse with the name Autobahn written in flowers and two boys laughing but I didn’t understand the reference to horses latitudes. FOXES: You’re back from America! How was your fan-base established over there and do you notice a difference between audiences either side of the pond? Craig: Yeah, we have a following. People follow labels you know? Like, if I like a label, then I’ll listen to the music that’s signed to them and that’s what has happened in America with us. Like our label, people discovered us through that and we showcased a lot over there too. So people know about us. There’s a difference over here and over there. It’s hard to say how because when we were there, we went specifically for SXSW. So it is what it is. It’s not the same as when you play other venues. There’s a bigger difference north and south. Like, I notice that audiences are different in different places in England and all over really. Every place is different. Even cities that are really close together will have completely different audiences. Yeah, they’re all different.

FOXES: Have you ever visited Ian Curtis’ grave? Craig: I haven’t no. We should do that. Is that in Macclesfield? What’s it like? FOXES: It’s in the cemetery in Macclesfield. Someone stole the original gravestone but it’s been replaced. People come from all over the world to leave lighters, friendship bracelets, candles and other things. What’s the best thing to come out of Leeds? Craig: The Brudenell Social Club. It’s just a really good venue. They look after you. Yeah. People come from all over to play there and they’re good to you. FOXES: What’s your guilty pleasure in terms of musical preference? Craig: I’m trying to think of what my guilty pleasure would be. I don’t think it counts. I like the Human League but that’s not really... I listen to Rasputin sometimes.
