Autumn 2008 Foxhills’ Members Magazine
The Fox Autumn 2008 For months prior to the healthspa opening I worked next to a newspaper clipping of BA’s Willie Walsh looking triumphant beneath the headline ‘Nice airport Willie, shame it doesn’t work’. Thanks to the diligence of my team and your support and patience, we averted our Terminal 5 moment. Now, not a day goes by without a member telling me how delighted they are with the new club.
Contents me with two hard copies and a DVD version of the presentation. James is 15. Not only was I bowled over by James’ confidence and insight (as I wrote to his parents John & Caroline, at his age I was cycling around Sunninghill with a pea shooter in my back pocket), I was impressed by James’ desire to make his club better.
It may not look like we have been up to much with the family club house, but Inside this edition of The Fox you’ll find rest assured we have been beavering away details of the stunning Spa Garden, the with all aspects of this space and will have exciting Children’s Clubhouse, the Manor more exciting news to share with you House relaunch as well as the construction towards Christmas, ranging from the look of new bunkers. to specific details about this new facility. Our ambitions for you do not stop there.
But Foxhills is so much more than the sum of its facilities. I have a wonderful story to illustrate the evangelical faith I have in Foxhills members. James Simcox asked to see me “with an idea”. He proceeded to conduct a laptop presentation on the benefits of a computerised tennis court booking system. He’d researched the need, developed a solution, outlined a programme of execution and return on capital. He left
With the investments we’re making and the involvement of members like James, Foxhills’ future looks exciting and secure for years to come. To celebrate my family’s 25 years at the club and to enable you to share the new healthspa with friends, please accept the enclosed four ‘Day Memberships’, worth £80.

Members’ Events Calendar 08/09 Thanksgiving Supper Thursday 27th November
On the 25th anniversary of the club, what better way to mark the occasion than by hosting the annual members’ ball. Mother Nature, however, decided not to be kind, and the heavens opened, the rain fell and the clouds gathered. But in true Foxhills spirit, the Events and Operation teams, lead by Christy Childs and Emma Haspineall, rallied together to ensure a little bit of water didn’t spoil the evening. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of joining us, pre-dinner drinks are traditionally taken on the Manor Lawn, but with the weather forecast not promising to brighten up we decided to make use of our beautiful 19th Century Manor (how many clubs have such a fabulous venue ready and waiting?). Nevertheless, the weather didn’t dampen spirits and a good time was had by all. Special guest Bobby Davro mingled with guests as they sipped champagne, caught up with old friends and wished Mr & Mrs Hayton a happy 25th.
The chefs were busily preparing a banquet fit for king and a small army – well, 275 meals to be exact, consisting of smoked salmon and caviar, breast of Gressingham duck, and rich chocolate mousse, followed by freshly brewed coffee and silver-themed petit fours. The evening got off to a bang with entertainment from 13 year-old Emilee Rapley (who celebrated her 14th birthday at midnight – congratulations to Emilee!) followed by the superb Premier Cru, who were also joined by a surprise set from Bobby Davro himself. This raised the tempo to fever pitch, leaving all guests dancing till the wee hours. Those who didn’t fancy a boogie decided to try their luck with a bit of roulette, on casino tables provided by ‘Take A Gamble’. If you’d like to hold an event at Foxhills, whether it’s a small affair or something grander, we have a willing team of Event Co-ordinators that would be more than happy to help. The Spa Garden
Welcome to our Spa Garden.
What’s Your Excuse?
We couldn’t have completed this project without the help and talent of our friends at the multi award-winning landscape firm, Landform; designer and Hampton Court & Chelsea Flower Show judge, Andrew Wilson Associates and gartenART Natural Swimming Pools.
Looking for excuses not to go to the gym? Here are mine. To start with, there was a queue to get into the old gym when it opened at 7a.m. It was packed with (very fit) people working out before going to the office. My exercise routine looked easy compared to theirs so I kept ratcheting it up. Then it got too hard and took too long. Finding a machine free was harder than winning the lottery. Eventually I was there all morning and came home exhausted. Classes were always at inconvenient times, and crowded. The showers had no shampoo. But exercise is good for me so I put the excuses aside and forced myself to go a few days a week. None of it did any good though, and I’d get frustrated and give up. A few months later I’d feel unfit and lethargic and start again. After one “rest” I decided to try out the new healthspa
when it opened in August. Sure enough, those fit people were there at the earlier start time of 6:30, but by 8:00 they’d finished their workout and were in XIX enjoying a cup of coffee. It was easy to find a free machine, but after a week of trying to devise a routine on my own, I booked an induction. Jacqui spent a full hour discussing my goals and putting together a personal programme. She showed me how to set up and use each piece of equipment and insisted that if I wanted to “ratchet up” my programme, I should discuss it with her first. “If you increase the weights, we may have to adjust the reps or one of the other exercises to balance it,” she pointed out. Oh. The high, vaulted ceilings have no banks of TVs. Instead, each bicycle, cross-trainer, stepper and treadmill has an
“Then I jump into the whirlpool before heading to the showers..... When I get home I feel energetic, not tired.” iPod holder, earphone jack, TV and radio – which I can turn off if I want to. Everything is light and airy, clean, and quiet. People chat to each other without shouting. It’s fun to work out now. I actually look forward to it. And the pool! While the kids enjoy the outdoor and family pools in the other building, I can swim as many lengths as I like in the new 20-metre lagoon pool. Any time of day. All year long. Then I jump into the whirlpool before heading to the showers (complete with shampoo). When I get home I
feel energetic, not tired. Back in August, the Olympics were on those TVs. They were a great inspiration when I started my new programme. Now they’re long gone, but I’m still here. Excuses? I’m all out.

Foxhills healthspa flowers beautifully provided by I’d like to tell you how this was all well-planned. But the truth is, this wonderful space, was borne out of a mistake. Faced with plans that showed a poolside sauna and steam room that would have been very cosy, we decided to put the sauna outside. And to stop it looking like a shed, we added a few other attractions. So depending on how you look at it we either have the most beautiful garden that complements the ethos of the healthspa or the world’s most expensive sauna.

Similar to the Ice Fountain in the treatment area, the natural pool stimulates your circulation, energises your spirit and brings your body temperature down all in one go, as you imagine it would.
Our authentic sauna imported from Finland continues your thermal experience and is recommended for 15 minute sessions. There is a café area to your right, although in time you’ll be able to enjoy food & drinks anywhere in the garden. As well as relaxing on the lawn, we hope members will try a wellbeing class such as tai chi. Around the lawn, sat on Indian sandstone, are seven bays providing members a little privacy and a wonderful view. The planting in front of each one is distinct, with different colours and scents.

A new Captain arrives at Foxhills
Junior golf membership at Foxhills
I would like to start off by thanking my predecessor Jeff Marshall, who has done a sterling job as Captain for the Club.
Towards the end of the summer holidays, Foxhills held the annual Foundation Golf trials in our attempt to unearth the next Paul Casey or Anthony Wall (both past graduates of the Foxhills Foundation).
I am honoured to be your new Captain and consider it a privilege to be invited to fulfil the role for the remaining part of this year and the 2009 season. I bring an enthusiasm to the role and the ability to spend time at the club – especially now the new healthspa has been finished, where I’ll be if I’m not on the course! Paul and I have been members of Foxhills since 1989, when we first joined Foxfit. Like many others, we found our way into the golf club and were immediately made welcome and encouraged to take part in competitions. I was taken onto the par 3 course each week to practise the game with Pat Cavanagh. Richard Summerscales worked hard to ensure I had a golf swing and I was encouraged by the likes of Phyl Bundy, one of our founder members. I have always been good at sport, representing my county at athletics, hockey, fencing and netball. I have always been willing to make the commitment to train and better myself – so hopefully I can improve my handicap in the future. Until I was bitten by the “golf bug”, I spent my leisure time playing hockey at Staines & Laleham, where I am a Vice President of Staines Hockey Club and former team captain. During that time we struggled to field full sides each week; however this was the foundation for what is now a successful national league team. When I wasn’t playing sport I was watching it – particularly my sons, Jonny and Greg, who joined local soccer teams, played mini- rugby and then took up rowing at secondary school. As parents we always supported their activities, 12 The Fox Autumn Edition
taking them to matches or riverbanks. As well as the early mornings and long journeys with them, we have enjoyed their successes, as part of the Junior International teams and then as Olympic Gold medallists with Team GB. During my working life I was a Senior teacher, responsible for a variety of administrative roles. I hope I am now able to bring that experience to the role of Foxhills Captain. I have been used to listening to what individuals need to say, seeking solutions to problems that arise, organising my time, prioritising the actions that need to be taken and focusing on the main objective. Golf at Foxhills has provided most of our social life, playing in mixed matches, club competitions and touring abroard with friends made at Foxhills – not to mention bridge each Monday and Wednesday evening. I was the captain of the most successful Pearson team for 14 years. During the 2006-7 campaign, our Foxhills team won the Surrey Cup and then represented Surrey at the intercounty finals, just missing out on the final prize. As Captain, I have been very encouraged by the support I
Two training sessions were held over the Manor course and driving range, under the exacting eyes of Richard Summerscales our Head Professional. He went on to select 4 lucky children who will have already received from the members for my Drive In, good luckcards and apologies from those unable to be present, offers of advice from senior members of the club, and interest and assistance from the Hayton family, especially Mrs Hayton. My aim this year is to encourage greater communication with our members and better use of technology, which will allow individuals to enter their own competition scores. Hopefully we will see our Juniors continue to flourish and our teams achieve success in county and national events. With Roger Hyder’s help and
advice, I am looking forward to a year of hard work and fun. I have already booked some dates with Richard to accept your challenge to the captain and pro. Finally, I invite all members of Foxhills, whether they are golfers, fellow bridge players, participants in the yoga class, fitness or tennis players to support our charity – Sparks – the medical research charity which raises funds for pioneering research on conditions affecting babies and children.
benefit from free coaching and membership for the next 4-5 years. Those selected were chosen not only for their prowess as golfers but also judged on their potential going forward. Congratulations go to Emma Bagnell, James Poulter, Frazer Hill and Will Williams. Welcome to our club and good luck for the future!
Congratulations go to Emma Bagnell, James Poulter, Frazer Hill and Will Williams. They have big shoes to fill if they are to follow Casey and Wall. In fact Casey said only last year “Foxhills is where it all started for me. I successfully tried for the Foxhills Golf Foundation as a young man

It’s part of our £10million renovation plan at the club. The project will include refurbishing the bar, drawing room and Manor Restaurant, creating a new look that will seamlessly fuse the history, character and charm of the building with contemporary colours, fabrics and styles. The Manor Restaurant will be taken back to its roots, re-emerging as the fabulous ‘Music Room’ while continuing to serve the first-class cuisine patrons are accustomed to. In addition, the Orangery, with its floor-to-ceiling Gothic windows, has been transformed into a private dining room for 40, conveying a Scandinavian 14 The Fox Autumn Edition

and world domination; also to throw terrific parties with tasty food & drinks, an entertainer, maybe a movie and an hour running amok (supervised) in the Soft Play Room below. We have had great meetings with teenagers, now the fun begins in selecting furniture for The Den (the old CV and free weights rooms), as well as ordering the coolest pool table, table football, jukebox and air hockey we can find. Members Competition We have teamed up again with our friends at the Royal Opera House to bring all Foxhills members the chance to win tickets to the Royal Ballet’s winter performance of The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is classical ballet at its most approachable and visually entrancing. It is a seasonal favourite, with something for everyone to enjoy, from the youngest in the family to the oldest. ETA Hoffmann’s story tells of one Christmas Eve, when young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents, but instead finds herself at the start of a night of magical adventures as the Christmas tree magically grows and the toy soldiers come to life to fight the Mouse King!
Roger Hyder
Golf Operations Manager The beautifully coloured imaginings of the fantasy Sugar Garden and its celebratory dances are a fabulous contrast – including, of course, the famous ‘dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ – and Peter Wright’s production tells the story clearly from its mysterious start to its happy conclusion. Through it all, Tchaikovsky’s music is some of the most memorable of all ballets, with a wealth of famous melodies.
I recently wrote to the members regarding the tee booking system and some of the problems midweek members were experiencing now that we had tightened up the system. Having listened to some of the concerns that were raised about the roll-up course we decided to make a subtle change to the procedures. As from 1st September, the roll-up course is strictly roll-up for the first two hours the course is open, whereby a member must turn up in person to get a tee time. Members can also telephone on the day to book a time however the first time offered will be 2 hours after the course has opened. From January 2009 members will be able to use a new internet tee booking service that we are launching. I am confident that this latest change to the tee booking system will benefit the majority of our midweek members. Further change is in the air with the Foxshop closing. Richard Summerscales will remain as our Head Professional but will concentrate on heading up the teaching programme. Many of you who know Richard, know that teaching is his first love and over the years he has helped many of our members improve their games and lower their handicaps.
All you have to do is register your email address with Membership (membership@foxhills.co.uk) to be entered into the prize draw. If you have registered your email address already, all you have to do is refer two friends’ email addresses.
Over the winter months we will operate a check-in desk in Bar XIX. Members and guests will be able to check-in, book tee times, and purchase golfballs and tees etc, at this desk.
Please mark in the subject heading: Royal Ballet.
The final decision with regards to the long term future of the shop is yet to be made but members can rest assured that everything will be in place before the season kicks off next year.
Closing date 16th December 08. Winners will be announced by 20th December. Tickets are for the January 10th evening performance.
18 The Fox Autumn Edition
This past year has seen much development and change at Foxhills.

Most importantly for me is that the Golf Office will be installed in the back of the Foxshop area where once again we will be readily accessible to the members. It has been obvious to all that the current temporary arrangement which saw us based in the top floor of the Manor House, has not worked for anyone as we have been so removed from the golf operation. There has been a noticeable improvement in the tee starting and course marshalling this year although there has been a question mark over the consistency of the marshalling. I am confident that with the Golf Office returning to the heart of the golf operation, this lack of consistency will improve further next year. We are still looking for further volunteers from the membership and outside the club so anyone who is interested should contact the Golf Office. After 21 years of loyal service to the club, David Langheim, the Bernard Hunt Course Manager, left to take up a similar position at Wimbledon Park. We took the opportunity to revert back to having only one person being responsible for both golf courses and after careful deliberation it was decided to appoint David Wyborn Golf Course Superintendent on a probationary basis. To assist David in what is a new and exciting role, we also appointed a consultant agronomist to advise David and give some guidance. The agronomist assisting us is David Whittaker, one of the country’s few Master
Greenkeepers and the man that built Wisley and oversaw its green keeping department for more than 10 years. I am very confidant that with all the support that has been given to David, he will pass this probationary period with flying colours, and I am sure that you will all join me in thanking him for the excellent job he has done so far. I hope you are all impressed with the new healthspa and the wonderful appearance of the area immediately outside Bar XIX. This autumn will see the tidying up and finishing of this area as well as some planting around the base of the new notice board. This new notice board now covers not only the current weeks events but also the following week as well. With our golf hotline, website, fox-emails and quarterly briefings, it forms part of our improved communication between the club and you the members.
Finally I would like to finish by saying what a pleasure it has been to work alongside Jeff Marshall and his committee this past year and how much I am looking forward to working with Judy and her committee this year. Many of you would have attended the Captains Drive towards the end of September and I must admit that over the years I have seen many different ways of getting to the first tee but using a large yellow school bus was a first for me! It leaves me just to remind all the golf members that November is the month of the 8-pack offer. Members can buy an 8-pack throughout the month of November for just £150. This breaks the cost of a guest green fee down to just £18.75 each! They are valid right through to the end of April and should you not use all of the vouchers this winter then they can be used again from November 09. Enjoy reading David’s article, he has a lot of exciting news to tell you.

Course Superintendent of Foxhills Bunker programme & update We made a start on our bunker programme this year and met with some mixed results. The new bunkers on the 1st and 15th holes on Bernard Hunt have held up well although one of the bunkers on 15 seems to have a problem with drainage. You may recollect that we experimented with Sportscrete in these bunkers yet we have seen little difference between the Bernard Hunt bunkers, and the bunkers that we rebuilt on the 1st Longcross. From October the 20th, we started to close the front 9 holes on the Bernard Hunt course as we really got stuck into our bunker programme.
Opening hours during the refurbishment The front nine holes will be closed from Monday to Thursday and reopen on Fridays as we rebuild 20 bunkers and drain the 1st and probably the 6th greens. If the opportunity arises we will also rebuild the men’s tee on the 3rd hole. New bunkers The new bunkers will in many cases be made a little smaller, be more free draining and come into play more as strategic obstacles. Our aim is also to make the new bunkers have shallower banks so that Sandpro ride-on bunker rakes can be easily driven in and out of them. This will help us achieve our long term goal of ensuring that bunkers are
fully raked daily. Some of the new bunkers will be larger than before and some will be removed all together. A lesson learnt This past year saw us drain more greens on the Longcross specifically the 4th and 9th greens. We have learnt a lot from the greens that we have drained previously and believe that we have found the ideal solution as the two latest greens have been by far the best greens to have recovered from the process. In the past we have tried overseeding and using washed turf, where virtually all the soil has been removed from the turf to enable the turf to take quicker. Although both methods have worked, the recovery time had been far too
long so this time I took the decision to use USGA spec turf to fill in the drainage lines. The soil on the bottom of this turf is 80% sand and makes the turf free-draining but much more stable and even than washed turf. The scars on the greens are already starting to recover and with regular topdressing any irregularities in the putting surfaces will soon be eradicated. Once more greens have been drained it is our intention to purchase our own Gradon machine which injects small lines of sand into the greens. The small lines will run at right angles to the new drainage lines and will enable our greens to be truly free draining!
The thinning out of the trees on the 3rd and 5th holes on Longcross has worked out very well. It has had 2 benefits, the first obviously has been the speeding up of play and secondly, and more importantly, it has allowed more light and air to get to the fairways on both of these holes. This has in turn seen a much thicker sward of grass develop on these fairways which makes for a much better playing surface.
of the landing areas off the tee will be widened down the right hand side of holes such as the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th holes. Where necessary we will plant the odd strategic fir tree that will still have an impact on any wayward drives. We hope that you have enjoyed the new fairway markers on both courses and the new ball washers on the Longcross. It is my intention to replace the ball washers on the Bernard Hunt course in the Spring.
Forward planning We are now looking to keep the area through the trees clear of brambles and bracken and the purchase this year of a new flail will help tremendously with this. You only have to look at what we had achieved on the right hand side of the 10th on Bernard Hunt to understand what our goal is going forward
This year we purchased a Trilovac which basically is a tractor mounted vacuum cleaner. The Trilo-vac will enable us to suck up the leaves as they drop from the trees this autumn and thus avoid the frustrations of many a member who can’t find their ball in the piles of leaves left around the courses. It will also enable us to clear out the ditches quicker which in turn helps the courses drain quicker.
New Member Golf Tournament: In conjunction with our Captain, Judy Searle, we have devised a new member-guest tournament for New Years Day. The tournament is called the Tombstone Classic and is a Greensomes format. Sign up sheets and further information will be posted on the notice boards towards the end of November.
We are also looking to trim back in places the tall Fescue rough on the Bernard Hunt course. The idea is to help speed up play again but not make the course easy, as if such a thing was possible! Some
As you can see we have much planned for the coming months but I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members for their very kind comments over the summer months. 20 The Fox Autumn Edition
