Spring 2009 Foxhills’ Members Magazine

The Fox Spring 2009 This month I’d like to tell you about a memorable coffee I shared with Terri & Kevin Adams. It was that surreal Monday in early February. Parts of the estate, or the Ottershaw alps as it was christened, were under a foot of snow. Yet there were two members who ventured out and into Nineteen purely for a coffee and to see Cathy. Not a sports bag between them.

Whilst our commitment to the constant improvement of your facilities will not falter, the wonderful community we are building is the real prize. That’s why we are excited and undaunted about the year ahead and look forward to sharing it with you.

It was wonderful and yet strange. In a year that saw unprecedented investment in the sports facilities, I realised our club is so much more than a sports club. The 60 members who come dancing every Tuesday night in the Clubhouse and the 72 members who exchanged ideas and business cards at the first Networking event illustrate this point perfectly. Both in chilly, doom and gloomy January. This is merely the start. The Youth Club will encourage younger members to organise their own events and next month Ian is hosting a cocktail party in the Manor just for members.

Marc Hayton Managing Director

Ps. To keep up to date with all these improvements, most members now receive a monthly bulletin of The Fox-e. To receive yours, simply email membership@foxhills.co.uk or sign up online.

Review of the year

What an amazing year We thought that pictures highlighted this year better than words with the smiling faces at each event making this anniversary year so memorable.

Review of the year

A series of meetings, some with parents, others with teenagers, ensured the £100,000 investment suited our members. Those that couldn’t attend, filled 22 pages in the Ideas book. We acted upon almost every one, apologies to whomever requested “underground turtle racing”. Maybe next year.

Thanks to the help of every colleague we could lay our hands on, the Youth Club opened as promised in time for the Christmas holidays. Even our corporate members got involved. A big thank you must go to Ian and Rebecca at THQ who supplied the game consoles and library of games. Coming soon … A Junior Gym will occupy the space left by the crèche. Dean is working with Technogym to plan the appropriate equipment for juniors to enjoy. This spring, in the newly refurbished main Studio, juniors will have their own Teen Timetable. Children are always welcome in the Manor, especially for the wonderful Sunday Buffet. Parents can also offer their children a sense of independence and responsibility by putting pocket money on their very own Purple card.

Memories of Foxhills By James Borthwick, Interviewed by Laura Hall Sitting in the office one Tuesday afternoon a gentleman walked into Membership and introduced himself as James Borthwick. “Borthwick” rang a bell from Foxhill’s history, I asked the gentleman; “Is it Mr Borthwick, relation to the Borthwick Family?” He replied ‘yes’ and that lead to the most interesting stories of Foxhills past and fond childhood memories from Mr Borthwick. When I asked if Mr Borthwick would like a tour of Foxhills some 15 years on from his last visit he was delighted. The trip down memory lane ended up in Bar XIX a space that didn’t even exist when Mr Borthwick was an energetic 7 year old boy exploring the grounds of his Grandfather’s estate and using it as his adventure playground. As we glanced out the windows Mr Borthwick told a story about the trees that divide the 18th fairways. A tall Oak tree stands proud with a small plaque on the ground in amongst the rhododendron roots inscribed “we sat and took comfort together”. Mr Borthwick and his

family visited his Grandmother and Grandfather once a month on a Sunday for a roast dinner in the “Music Room” which we now know as the newly refurbished Manor Restaurant. The drive took nearly an hour from Banstead. Mr Borthwick commented on coming up the main driveway that is still in use today. When the family went to church they would always use the back drive to take them through the middle of what we now know as the golf courses and to the church in Lyne. For Sunday Roast the family would all eat together. The main part of the meal provided by the families Meat Company. The docks of Liverpool were the main hub for the business and a coincidence as this is where Mr Ian Hayton himself grew up. After dessert the children would be collected by Nanny to play board games in what we call the Study but the room that was fondly named the Television Room by the children. Ludo and Halba were played as well as an opportunity to listen to the radio. Other activities such as

croquet on the lawn and squash but only in the summer months when it was a little warmer due to there being no heating in the squash courts. The croquet had its very own set of “House Rules” that the Borthwick’s prided themselves on. Other players were slightly miffed that you were allowed to hold the ball under your foot before striking it with the mallet but it did lead to the family winning many of the matches. The boys would all be dressed in their shorts, socks to their knees and with a nice

smart tie and shirt on. The colder days would require a jumper and hat but the weather would never spoil the fun that the children had. No matter what Mr Borthwick would get up to whether it was hiding in a hole cut out from trees in the walled garden or towing his father out of the mud up by the farm: there was plenty to keep the whole family busy. Nowadays we have the fantastic Children’s Clubhouse with the air hockey, indoor adventure centre and much more. With Mum and Dad being able to seek solace in the healthspa so the whole family still have their special places at the club. As Mr Borthwick grew up he spent nearly a year living upstairs in the Manor House. All of his schooling was provided; Latin and English in the morning followed by Maths, History, Geography and French language. Another part of his education was being taught how to plough by the farm hand, David Outfield. With so much land Mr Borthwick soon picked up how easy it was to plough in a straight line. If you have any stories, fond memories or photos we would be delighted to share these with you. Please email them to marketing@foxhills.co.uk

Roger Hyder

Golf Operations Manager

Our intention this winter was to renovate all the bunkers on the front 9 holes on the Bernard Hunt course as well as drain the 1st and 6th greens on the same course. In the New Year we started constructing a new tee on the 17th hole on Longcross.

from the tee. In time we will replace this with a bunker further up the fairway once again on the left hand side but to tighten the hole up for the better player.

Some of the bunkers have been filled in and there have been a few additions made.

The 2nd hole has seen the consolidation of the fairway bunkers on the left with one large bunker now in place and the introduction of a new bunker further up the fairway which is designed to catch out the longer hitter from the tee. The greenside bunkers have been reshaped with the bunker on the left being brought round towards the front of the green in order to tighten up the approach a little.

On the 1st hole we have filled in the bunker situated down the left hand side,180 yards

The 3rd hole has seen the fairway bunkers off the tee reduced in number and

The bunker renovation programme has so far been a tremendous success. All the bunkers have been reshaped, dug out, re-drained and soon the first batch of sand will be deposited in each one.

reshaped. Next year will see some tree planting introduced to tighten up the hole a little. The greenside bunkers have once again been reshaped and brought around towards the front again. On the 4th the cross bunkers have been removed which helps to speed up play a little as well as making the tee shot a little easier for the ladies. Having said that it is the architect’s recommendation that this area is planted up with heather and/or gorse! The greenside bunkers have been enlarged and once again moved towards the front of the green to tighten up the entry point. The 5th hole is commonly recognised as the hardest par 5 on the complex and that doesn’t include the putting green! The recommendation was once again that we make the tee shot a little easier so we removed a bunker but brought the remaining one in towards the fairway a little. The fairway bunkers short of the green have been removed as they didn’t come into play for the majority of second (and in many cases third) shots. A greenside bunker has been introduced on the left and the bunker on the right has been reshaped, brought into the green a little and the lip lowered.

The 6th hole has had the largest amount of bunkers removed which has been a little controversial. The fairway bunkers on the right hand side will be replaced by 2 or 3 swamp cypress trees which will be planted in the New Year (these trees thrive in damp areas). The idea behind this is once again it will help speed up play but it will also bring into play the fairway bunker further up the hole. This bunker has also been reshaped. Up at the greenside the bunker on the right has been moved closer to the green and reshaped. The interesting thing about this bunker was that it was built on an old road which would explain why it was such a poor draining bunker! The left side bunker has been reshaped and moved round to the front a little which once again helps protect the approach into the green. On 7 we once again consolidated the fairway bunkers and now have one large bunker in the rough. The bunker short of the green has been reshaped and enlarged which helps to tighten things up for those few golfers going for the green in two. The 8th has seen the removal of the large pot-hole bunker on the left. The bunker front right has been moved around a little and the bunker towards the

Golf

back right hand side has been moved towards the middle of the bank. We also took the opportunity whilst there to reshape the bank on the right and shallow it out a little. Finally, the 9th hole has seen the bunker on the left hand side fairway removed and the greenside bunkers have been consolidated into two large bunkers. The bunker at the back of the green was virtually redundant, so this has also been removed but the intention is to plant this area up with some heathers.

our own trencher to open up the drainage so that it starts to pull water off the fairways. Early spring will see us drain 2 or 3 more greens using the same methods as used last spring on the 4th and 9th greens on Longcross. At present David our Course Superintendant is looking at the 14th and 15th greens on Longcross. We are once again anticipating that you will be back putting on them within 10 days.

The really fascinating thing that has come to light since we started the bunker programme is that most of the bunkers had drainage in them already! It would appear that the drainage was put in 30 years ago when the course was constructed. Clay pipes were put in 3ft deep tranches and topped up with gravel to within 18 inches of the surface. Then for some strange reason, instead of topping the trench up to surface level with sharp sand, the construction team put the clay subsoil back on top which effectively sealed the drainage. The drainage pipe have not seen a drop of water in 30 years.

It gives me great pleasure to confirm that Foxhills will be opening a new Golf and Spa shop in April. This will be situated in the same building that housed the old Foxshop. When Richard, our Head Professional, gave up the operation of the old Foxshop in October, we took time to look at whether the area vacated would be better used for the Spa and should any type of golf shop be better situated elsewhere. Anyway, I'm pleased to confirm that it will be staying put! The other great positive about this is that the Golf Office will be situated in the back of the new shop which makes us much more accessible to the members.

It is David’s intention to trace the drainage lines in the fairways over the next 12 months and see if we can use

As part of the new Golf Academy that Richard and Nathan are looking to set up, there will be free group clinics

every week for our golf members to enjoy sharpening up their game with. I know both guys are also intending to introduce 90 minute "teach ins" on alternate weekends where members who can only play at weekends can have a complimentary 10 minute "tune up" of their swings.

As you can see, we are still moving forward in our goal to ensure that our members enjoy the best club and facilities in the area. Yours in Golf,

Last but not least, we are currently testing out the new members on-line tee booking system and we hope to have everything up and running by early spring if not before.

As you can see, we are still moving forward in our goal to ensure that our members enjoy the best club and facilities in the area.

David Wyborn

Course Superintendent of Foxhills I have been very pleased with the progress and can’t believe that all the groundwork was completed in just 6 weeks. As Roger has described in his article, we have been very busy with the bunker programme on the front 9 holes of the Bernard Hunt course. I have been very pleased with the progress and can’t believe that all the groundwork was completed in just 6 weeks. We are now entering the next phase. The bunkers that have been dug out and reshaped have also been drained. I have been asked by several members what the grey boards are that follow the drainage lines in the bunkers. It’s called Aquadane and is a special membrane that filters the water as it drops down into the drain. It prevents sand from clogging up the drainage as well as preventing any stones working their way up into the bunker. The banks of all the bunkers have been turfed and sharp sand spread out in the base of the bunkers to level the ground out. Upside-down turf was then placed over the sharp sand which will also help prevent stones and clay working upwards and contaminating the bunker sand.

Our next job is to spread 100mm of bunker sand evenly throughout every bunker and compact with soil compactor. Late February/early March will then see all the bunkers topped up with a final light application of sand and we hope to have them all open by early April. Elsewhere on the complex my department has been busy with the winter works programme. The 14th hole on Longcross has seen all the saplings on the heather bank removed and we have also been busy with some drainage work on the left hand side of the 6th green and on the right hand side of the 5th green on Longcross. Work has started on the new tee on the 17th Longcross which will see a bigger, better and more free draining tee open for the spring. Following on from comments from the Ladies, we have cut back the rhododendron bushes in front of the 18th tee on the Bernard Hunt and we will also be lowering the height of the Rhododendron bushes in front of the 8th tee also on Bernard Hunt.

My department will be taking delivery of over £100,000 worth of new machinery at the end of May which will assist us in maintaining the excellent playing surfaces that you enjoy all year round. Having looked at several companies we have decided to go with Toro once again. Early Spring will see the installation of a new cart path around the back of the 18th greens. The idea behind this is to encourage all the buggies to exit the Longcross nearer to the Clubhouse rather than currently have to drive all the way back round the 1st tee and Spa.

Finally can I thank all the members for their support throughout my probationary period as Course Superintendant. Now my promotion has now been confirmed I would like to assure all members that my main goal is to ensure that all our members and guests get to enjoy some of the best playing surfaces, on two of the best golf courses, in the South.

I’d like to thank all the members for their support throughout my probationary period as Course Superintendant.

Ten Questions

Ten Questions with Ray Wilkins

Ten Questions

As part of a regular series in the Fox, we asked Chelsea number 2 Ray Wilkins 10 questions about his golf and membership of Foxhills. How’s the new job going? Absolutely hectic! I’m loving being back in full time coaching again, working with the quality of players there and of course being at the club where it all started for me is a dream come true (Ray was Chelsea’s youngest ever captain at 18 years of age)

How long have you been playing golf and what is your handicap? I’ve been playing since I was 16 years old so I’ll leave you to do the maths! My handicap was 11 before coaching at Chelsea started. I’ve played so little since that I’ve probably gone up 2 or 3 shots by now.

How long have you been a member of Foxhills? Ooh! That’s a tricky one. I think it’s about 16 years (we checked club records and Ray and his family have been members since 1991)

Why Foxhills when you could have joined a host of top clubs in the South? The thing that first struck Jackie (Mrs Wilkins) and I on our first visit was how friendly everyone was. There was never the normal stuffiness that was associated with most of the top clubs back then. It has always appeared so relaxed here with a friendly atmosphere and never any hassle. Also it helps that I love both the golf courses.

What are your favourite memories of Foxhills Ooh! That’s another tricky one. There are so many! Golfing wise it would have to be scoring an eagle 2 on the 1st hole on Bernard Hunt in my charity golf day. The embarrassing thing was that there was a prize for nearest the pin in 2. Roger (our

Golf Operations Manager) insisted that I presented myself with the prize! Family wise there have been so many memorable occasions at Foxhills. We enjoy eating in the Manor restaurant and we love Christmas Day lunch in the Manor with our family.

Tell us more about your charity golf day A couple of friends of mine were bemoaning the fact that there are too many charity golf days out there that just take your money and care very little about whether you have a good time or not. We decided to approach Foxhills about hosting our own day and of course Mr and Mrs Hayton got behind it immediately. It’s held every year in late May/early June and we have an absolute ball! Brendan Reynolds, a very close friend of ours, organises all the teams and another good friend of mine, Keith Westcott and his company Ericsson have been very generous in their sponsorship since the event’s inception. Jackie and I contract our football and celebrity friends who very kindly give up there time to play. We have 2 Italian restaurants out on the golf course feeding the golfers and topping them up with some beautiful Italian wines. In the evening we have a gala dinner and cabaret in a huge marquee on the Manor lawn. Our event is called the 3 Charities golf day as we pick 3 new charities every year as the main beneficiaries as well as supporting some other less well known charities.

What do you make of all the changes that have been going on at the club over the last few years? I think its brilliant! As a member its nice to see where

all your money goes and the improvements have been fantastic. I love the feel of the “village square” outside the Clubhouse and the new Bar XIX is a welcome addition. There seems to be a constant stream of improvements made every year to the golf courses and as a golfer I really appreciate that. The new accommodation block (Lyne House) I’ve not stayed in but good friends of mine have and rave about the place.

Out of the two championship courses, which is your favourite? They are both great courses but I have to say that nothing gives me greater pleasure than beating my brothers out on the Longcross.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on a golf course? Looking back it would have to be when we played in Portugal one time and Ross our son insisted on driving the buggy. On one particular hole he lost control of it coming down a path and nearly ended up in a lake! Looking back on it all its absolutely hilarious however it was a bit scary at the time!

Out of all the footballers that you’ve played golf with, who has impressed you the most? Without doubt it would be Gary O’Neill of Middlesborough. I met him when I was coaching the England under 21s. He played off 2 and struck the ball like a pro!

Foxhills would like to take this opportunity to thank Ray for his time, and look forward to welcoming him and his family to the club very soon.

Dining

Dining at Foxhills Dear Members, As I write this update, I realise that so much has happened this year not only in the Club but also from a catering front. Bar X1X continues to stride each day, with many members becoming regulars, enjoying the food and service from what is now a very strong team. We have recently updated our menu with X1X’s chef Ian, giving our regulars some variety but have been mindful to retain the prices which you have all become so fond of. The wine list has also changed with a small and large glass now available. Not stopping there, February has seen the introduction of draft Peroni to the bar. Friday night continues to bloom with our resident pianist’s performing your favourite tunes and we plan to have guest vocalists performing with Lance on a couple of dates later in the year. The Summerhouse has been buzzing over the past couple of months with many of our members enjoying this space whilst on route to and from the Youth Club. We thought that you would like to know that this restaurant will be freshened up over the next month or so, with the introduction of new furniture and décor. February also sees the introduction of a new menu, with more emphasis on the food being offered to children; include many organic ingredients and larger dishes for older children. We also know it has been hard to prise your family away from the Youth Club and with this in mind we have put together a take-away section available for the older children to take back into the Den. We have also caught up with our Chef who is keen to place more seasonal messages through the restaurant, so we have decided that during the update we will be placing more blackboards within the restaurant for the adults. The soup blackboard will continue and a dessert blackboard will be introduced. The addition of the youth club and the younger children’s area will naturally see more members using the venue for birthday parties. The Summerhouse will host these during the afternoons or serve them in the arts & crafts room. Please read on in this edition to see what party ideas we have for all our members.

A permanent barbeque will be built before the spring in anticipation of a better summer and the new décor will make the Summerhouse the perfect evening venue for those members looking to organise a great party. And lastly it brings me on to the exciting refurbishment of The Manor. We have just about finished the £300,000 investment into this space allowing us to increase the WOW factor to all members visits or guests stays. The new look manor has been expertly designed by Interior Designer David Hales who’s portfolio includes the design of the RAC, Clubhouse and Leander Rowing Club at Henley, and our very own Nineteen Barseen. The new look features neutral shades of grey flannel, chocolate and stone together with soft furnishings that offer a quirky twist on the traditional. Lighting has been designed by expert Mark Kavanagh, whose work includes several Royal Palaces. The Manor Restaurant has been taken back to its Victorian roots re-emerging as the fabulous ‘Music Room’ while continuing to serve the first-class cuisine patrons are accustomed to. The restaurant has been decorated with Cole & Son’s wallpaper and new features include an elegant limestone fireplace and sumptuous furniture. We didn’t stop there we then branched in to the drawing room, Lloyd Loom cane wicker furniture, sumptuous chairs and duck egg tones throughout will create a warm, sunny feel while the adjacent Bar will feature a darker colour palette creating a cosier space. We want to invite all our members and their guests to come and have a peek on Tuesday 24th March. Forthcoming events include Gourmet wine dinner with Mount Difficulty from New Zealand on Thursday 19th March. We hope you enjoy all your new look restaurants, and would love to hear your feedback. Yours in Food,

Jeff Condliffe, General Manager Foxhills jcondliffe@foxhills.co.uk

Health checks at Foxhills healthspa

Want to gain information on your health? Find out if your lifestyle and training is affecting key measurable health indicators Myself and my team have trained to perform a health check using the Tanita Body Composition Analyzer. In addition we can measure you Blood sugars and Cholesterol. we will also measure you Peak flow (simple lunge function test) to give you an all round measure of where you are at.

About the Tanita Body Composition Analyzer Tanita's Body Fat Monitors and Body Composition Monitors use Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to help calculate results. BIA helps to calculate body composition by sending a low, safe electrical signal through the body. The signal passes freely through fluids contained in lean tissue, such as muscle and blood, but meets resistance passing through fat tissue. Tanita monitors accurately measure this resistance and use it to calculate elements of body composition. When set against gender, height, weight and body type, the monitors can calculate your body fat percentage. BIA depends on your body's hydration (water) level, which along with your weight will fluctuate naturally throughout the day. The best time to take a reading of your weight or body measurement is in the early evening, before your meal. This is when your hydration level will be more stable. Avoid taking readings after you've woken up in the morning. Not only will you be dehydrated, but also the majority of fluid in your body will be stored in the central trunk area.

“When my wife gave me a health check as a Christmas present I wondered ,“what’s this about?!” But in fact in an hour l had a useful overview of my fitness level and general health. l would recommend this as a helpful stimulus to those who wish to exercise regularly”. Johnathan Miller

As the day progresses, the fluid becomes more evenly distributed through the limbs, increasing the accuracy of your readings!

What the Monitor reveals about you!

BMI is also influenced by build and muscle mass. So, for example, inaccurate figures will be obtained for people

Visceral Fat levels

• who suffer from a water balance dysfunction (e.g. dehydration or oedema).

Visceral Fat (Abdominal Fat) is the fat that surrounds the vital organs in the trunk / stomach area of the body. High Visceral Fat levels may increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Bone Mineral Mass The Bone Mineral Mass feature, which appears on selected Body Composition Monitors (Innerscan), indicates an estimated weight of bone mineral mass. This result is reached through statistical calculation based on research findings that there is a close correlation with bone weight and FFM (Fat Free Mass). It has been proven that building up muscle tissue through sport promotes stronger healthier bones. Consequently, users should aim to build and maintain healthy bones through adequate exercise and a diet rich in calcium.

Metabolic Rate The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories the body needs when at rest. The speed of your metabolism is determined by many factors such as gender, age, muscle mass compared to body fat and the amount of physical activity undertaken on a regular basis.
