elcome to the heart of the Texas Hill Country! Boerne is both literally and figuratively an entryway into one of Texas’ most beautiful regions: The Hill Country. While just a couple of decades or so ago, Boerne (pronounced Bur-nee) easily could have been considered hidden. Today, it is a town where technology and glories of yesteryear see equal balance. Boerne is recognized across the United States as a desirable place to live. Listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the country’s fastest-growing regions, the area’s rapid expansion has meant numerous new housing subdivisions as well as an influx of industry, business and tourism. Boerne strives to hold on to its

warm, small-town origins. Oak trees still grow together in canopies above many city streets, tree-lined roads pass by historic and new homes and a trip to the grocery store or your favorite watering hole almost guarantees an encounter with friends and neighbors. The surrounding countryside is lush and arid, dramatic and pastoral. Streams and rivers soften the sharp-edged limestone topography. Roosters and goats, still raised within city limits by a few old timers and many agriculture-driven students, may wander about under cell phone towers that have risen within the last several years.

Established by a young group of Germans who considered themselves classical philosophers – known as the Free Thinkers – Boerne originally didn’t allow churches inside the city limits. Today, however, the town is home to numerous religious congregations. Also enormously important within the ranks of the city’s population is its volunteerism. Citizens selflessly donate countless hours not only to religious matters, but to social, educational, environmental, political and historical causes as well.

The crown jewel of Boerne’s history is its quaint Main Street, also called the Hill Country Mile. It is lined by many of the buildings that formed the vibrant core of the county’s “city life.” These structures, although admired by tourists, are still thought of as home by many of the town’s residents. “That’s the house where I grew up,” one might point out, or “There’s the hospital where I was born,” or “Here’s the dry goods store that sold us fabric for our dresses.” And apparently it’s not only long-timers and newcomers who are drawn to Boerne’s old structures. Ghosts, it seems, are drawn to the buildings as well. For example, the lovely, ornate

Whether it’s shopping, visiting the area’s beautiful caves, exploring the local nature center, enjoying historically authentic exhibits, birding, cycling, hunting or hiking, Boerne provides the ideal blend of the urban and the rural. Close on one hand is an inter-

national airport, the Alamo, the San Antonio Riverwalk, SeaWorld of Texas, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the San Antonio Zoo and numerous concert and museum venues. Nearby on the other hand is the unique and sought-after beauty of the beautiful and picturesque Texas Hill Country. Fall/Winter 2023  Boerne Tourism Guide

Boerne’s history has deep roots Boerne, the county seat of Kendall County, is bound by Cibolo Creek, Interstate 10 and U.S. 87 about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio in the southern part of the county. In 1849, a group of German colonists from Bettina camped on the north side of Cibolo Creek, about a mile west of present-day Boerne. They called their new community Tusculum, after Cicero’s home in ancient Rome. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to Boerne in honor of Ludwig Börne, a German poet and publicist. Ironically, Mr. Börne never visited the town that was named after him. A post office was established in 1856 with August Staffell as postmaster. The community had only 10 houses in 1859, but it was chosen to be the county seat by a margin of 67 votes after the county was established in 1862, separating the area from its previous Comal County status. A courthouse was built in 1870 and 6

is still in use, making it the second-oldest courthouse in Texas. Boerne developed the reputation of having a very healthy environment and quickly became known as a health resort. By 1884 it had five hotels, assorted businesses and 250 residents. Cotton, wool and grain were the principal shipments, but timber, cedar posts and building stone also were profitable commodities. The arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway in 1887 brought increased economic opportunity, and by 1890 the population of Boerne had risen to 800. Boerne residents voted to incorporate in 1909 and established a mayor-alderman form of city government. Also in that year they established the Boerne Independent School District. The population was reported at 950 in 1914, and the community prospered through the 1920s. The Great Depression of the 1930s, however, all but put an end to the tourism and cotton farming that had been staples of the local economy.

The population fell from an estimated 2,000 in 1928 to 1,117 in 1931. It had risen to only 1,271 by the 1940s. In the 1950s, however, many residents turned to nearby San Antonio for employment, and Boerne’s population was back on the rise. The population grew at a slow but steady rate, reaching 2,169 in 1960. In the 1960s, construction in neighboring Bexar County of the San Antonio Medical Center and the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as the completion of Interstate 10, made Boerne even more attractive as a town from which to commute. Its population rose to 2,400 by 1970, 3,254 by 1980 and to 4,274 by 1990. In the 1990s, the population exceeded 5,000, making Boerne eligible for Home-rule city status. This was approved by its citizens in 1995. Accelerated growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s increased the population to an estimated 10,661 according to the 2010 census. The 2020 census showed a big jump with a popula-

tion of more than 19,000. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Boerne was the 15th-fastest-growing city in the United States, population of 10,000 and up, from 2010-19, exploding by 71 percent during that timeframe. Meanwhile, Kendall County was the fifth-fastest growing county in the nation, population 10,000 and up, during the same time period. In July 2019, the county’s population was listed at 47,431, compared to 33,384 in 2010 – a 42.1 percent hike. In spite of the influx of different ethnic groups, the German cultural tradition has dominated the community in many ways. The Boerne Gesangverein, or singing society, which was established in 1860, was an important social and recreational organization until it disbanded in 1977. German community organizations still active include the Boerne Schuetzen Verein (shooting club), which was formed in 1864, and the Boerne Village Band, which was formed about the same time as the singing society.

buildings can be found including St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church – an iconic limestone structure built high on a hill overlooking the city. The church was modeled after San Antonio’s Mission de la Purisma (1730) with twin towers that rise 65 feet in the air. Next door, The Phillip Manor has seen many uses over the last 152 years, and now has been restored into a boutique hotel, pub and event center. Across the street, the two-story triple column structure with arched windows is the Victorian style Carstanjen House (also called The Mansion House). Nearby is the famous Kronkosky Tower, on the grounds of the Benedictine Ministries offering the best view in Boerne, and Veterans Park.

or folks who enjoy a night on the town – as opposed to a night in the city – Boerne has its own reserves of local ϐine arts opportunities. The Hill Country Mile boasts several renowned galleries, including Gallery 195, Carriage House Gallery, Serendipity on Main and Texas Trails Gallery, COSAS, CHROMA-13 Contemporary Art and Hill Country Pottery. Among the many art dealers, shoppers can peruse handcrafted jewelry, molded porcelain, folk art, wood carvings, hand-thrown pot-

tery, cast statues, ϐine paintings and photography of all kind and so much more. The vibrant Boerne Community Theatre, after about three decades of stage productions, provides excellent excuses to get out of the house and into a live-event venue with a strong cadre of adults and teens who consistently bring down the house. Boerne Performing Arts puts together an annual schedule of entertainment that pleases audiences of all ages. Performances take place in the Champion High School Auditorium.

Also, the Boerne Concert Band, a nonproϐit organization that provides a venue for local musicians to present popular music for family-oriented audiences to enjoy, puts on several performances annually in the Boerne High School Auditorium. The concerts are free. The Patrick Heath Public Library hosts a Live! At the Library series of concerts and events for guests to enjoy as well as other programs. Other local venues also provide artistic opportunities throughout the year. HCCArts sponsors shows and offers classes that entertain and educate. Two high school choirs, both winners at highest competition levels, provide regular opportunities for nights of great vocals. The district’s middle school choirs, which score high competitively as well, do the same. Respected orchestral programs

at the secondary school level also make for wonderful evenings of music. In fact, Boerne ISD’s entire music program has received national recognition, as well as individual performance honors. Local high schools also have talented theater departments and produce outstanding stage performances. Cibolo Center embraces nature, trails CIBOLO CENTER FOR CONSERVATION The Cibolo Center for Conservation transforms lives through the love of nature, welcoming guests into a beautiful natural Hill Country setting for nature education, enriching community experiences and environmental research. Boerne blessed with abundance of parks and recreation areas. NORTHSIDE PARK Northside Neighborhood Park is a lovely and quiet space home to the trailhead of the Currey Trail. It is also home to the Parks and Recreation Department administrative office. Currently, visitors can take advantage of the half-mile trail, picnic tables or take their dogs on a stroll through the vast open greenspace. Boasting a skate park, it’s a great place to stop with the whole family. RIVER ROAD PARK Looking for a place to relax and enjoy what nature has to offer? Come to River Road Park, located just off Main Street on River Road near downtown Boerne. Residents and visitors alike come to the park to enjoy the many features this beautiful location has to offer. Watching the many ducks that reside there that are beautiful, colorful and playful is one of the most popular activities at this picturesque park, but visitors are asked to please avoid the temptation to feed the feather friends. There is also a winding walking trail that stretches from Main Plaza down to the Cibolo Center for. There are also clean picnic tables where you can enjoy a picnic or just relax and read a book. You may also see people of all ages fishing from the riverbanks and turtles that will occasionally pop their heads up out of the water. If you love being in a serene and peaceful place and enjoying what mother nature has to offer then visit River Road Park in Boerne. BOERNE CITY PARK City Park, 106 City Park Road, is in a unique natural setting as it shares a border with Cibolo Creek, which boasts some of the most magnificent cypress-lined banks of the Cibolo. The park still serves as Boerne’s largest park. In 1964, efforts were underway by the city to acquire a 125-acre tract of land to serve as the city’s first developed park. The mayor, Ray Smart, was notified on Febru-

ary 10, 1965, by a Western Union telegram from Ralph W. Yarborough, U.S. Senator, that Boerne would be receiving $12,159 from a federal grant to aid in the purchase of the park land. Developed shortly after the city purchased the land in 1964, City Park was unique in that it offered the widest variety of recreational opportunities of any park in the city at the time. It also served for many years as the city’s only park that supported athletic activities such as softball, baseball, tennis and soccer. Today, the park has tennis facilities, multi-purpose fields and a swimming pool. BOERNE CITY LAKE Located about one mile northwest of Boerne off of Upper Cibolo Creek Road, this large lake has attracted outdoor enthusiasts for decades. Concerned over flooding in Boerne, city forefathers recognized a need to create a means to assist with flood control. An application was made to the Texas Water Commission to seek approval for water rights in the Cibolo Creek Watershed of the San Antonio River Basin. The Texas Water Commission granted permission to the city of Boerne on January 7, 1972, to construct and maintain a dam and reservoir on Cibolo Creek for municipal purposes to aid in flood control. In September 2005, the Boerne City Council approved development of City Lake Park. To protect this valuable asset of the city, the Boerne City Council approved the first set of ordinances for the lake in March 1979. One of the most significant rules of the lake is that no motorized boats are allowed on the lake. This is to further protect the water. However, sail boats, row boats and kayaks are allowed. The park also offers swimming, picnic areas, disc golf, a pavilion and other amenities.

The geological process can still be seen, as both of these caves are “living” and water continues to erode and deposit formations at a glacial pace. MAIN PLAZA The central focus point of downtown Boerne, Main Plaza, 100 N. Main St., was the first area designated in the city of Boerne to serve as a community park. It was established about 1852 and was known as the Common Area. This area was much larger than the remaining part, which is now known as Main Plaza. The plaza is in the heart of Boerne and serves as the site of numerous festivals, concerts, car shows, celebrations and Boerne Market Days. The park features a gazebo, which serves as a location for weddings and concerts. VETERANS PLAZA At 801 South Main St., Veterans Plaza is one of the original four park sites in Boerne. The park is filled with a variety of trees and sidewalks that lead to the center of the park, where the Veterans War Memorial is

located. The park is the site of annual gatherings for veterans and Memorial Day ceremonies. Many Kendall County residents have answered the call to duty to serve their country in time of war. In 1923, the H.J. Graham family erected a memorial monument near the center of Military Plaza (today known as Veterans Plaza)

honoring all the men who died as a result of military action in the armed forces during World War I. The names of those who lost their lives are listed on the four sides of the monument. Years later, a bronze piece was added to the top of the monument recognizing veterans. And plaques were added to recognize

those that were killed in combat during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. As part of the 2014 renovation plaques were added recognizing those killed in combat during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

Included with the 2014 renovations of Veterans Plaza, “The Walk of Honor” was installed. The Walk of Honor was part of a fund raising project to help finance some of the shortfall for the entire park renovations. It is an extra wide walkway from Main St to the center of the park lined with bricks that include names of family and friends that served or are still serving in the military. BOERNE SKATE PARK Located across from Curing Elementary School at 524 Adler St., this park covers about 7,500 square feet featuring a plaza style design. The city worked with the local skating community to get its input on what the park should feature. The result was a one of a kind streetscape plaza style park that features various skate ramps. KINDERPARK Located at 111 Water St., this fenced and shaded park is very popular with families with younger children. Kinderpark is perfect for small birthday parties and gatherings. Amenities include a covered pavilion, picnic tables, benches and a unique and exciting playground. CIBOLO CENTER FOR CONSERVATION One of Boerne’s true natural gems, the Cibolo Nature Center was born of the dreams of local citizens who wished to see natural habitat not only restored, but preserved in perpetuity. Since the 1980s, the CNC has continued to develop and grow both in size and in learning opportunities, celebrating the Hill Country land and natural resources as an important legacy. With conservation as its primary focus, the CNC’s library and exhibits allow for learning, while its many trails let visitors explore a variety of ecosystems within a small area through which a beautiful, cypress-bordered stretch of the Cibolo Creek runs. One of Boerne’s most historic and beautiful structures, the Herff 22

farmhouse and its surrounding property, was purchased recently as an extension of the Cibolo Nature Center. Something of a neighborhood gathering place, the Herff Farm land is the location of a community garden, a weekly farmers market and other special events. COUNTY PARKS Three county parks lie within just a few miles of Boerne’s central Main Street area. The Joshua Springs Park & Preserve is the first of the county’s large and beautiful nature areas and a place where walkers and hikers can enjoy an extensive trail system as a way to experience the Hill Country in a peaceful, up-close-and-personal way. Birders are provided with many opportunities for sightings, including areas that are specifically dedicated to chimney swifts and bluebirds, while fishermen are welcome at the park’s ponds and waterways. The most developed of the county’s three parks, Joshua Springs offers pavilion and playground facilities, among many other amenities. Just around the bend from Comfort, the James Kiehl River Bend is a 25-acre area of exceptional beauty and peace dedicated to a local veteran who died in Iraq. Almost 2,000 feet of riverfront land allow visitors swimming, paddling and fishing access to the exceptional beauty of the Hill Country’s celebrated Guadalupe River. Another lovely and quiet spot is the Kreutzberg Canyon Natural

Area - more than 100 more acres of rolling countryside adjoining the Guadalupe. Left largely undeveloped, three miles of paths trace the river’s banks, while wildlife observation blinds allow visitors to stop and observe the natural world around them. GUADALUPE RIVER STATE PARK East of Boerne, just past the quaint hamlet of Bergheim, is

the Guadalupe River State Park. Horse lovers have access to several miles of an equestrian trail system, and campers can pitch their tents on any of the multiple camping sites. Miles of water access allows enthusiasts to fish, paddle, swim and float, while the Children’s Discovery Center gives children hands-on access to exhibits, themed discovery boxes and a backpack of tools that make exploring the park fun.

A Dickens Celebration ushers in holiday season O

ne of the Hill Country’s favorite celebrations is back, now spanning four distinct weekends, all kicking off the day after Thanksgiving. Aimed at giving revelers some “small-town” holiday cheer to mark the beginning of the holiday season, “A Dickens Celebration” will begin with a reimagined Dickens on Main the evenings of Thanksgiving weekend, November 26-27, followed by the new “Weihnachts Weekend,” “Toast of Olde Town” and “Kinder Fest.” The expanded celebration will offer guests fresh opportunities for holiday cheer while preserving

the spirit of the decades-held tradition. Last year, out of an abundance of caution because of the COVID-19 pandemic, ofϐicials canceled the popular holiday event. It already had been scaled back just to some basic events, but the fear of spreading the virus in a crowded atmosphere led to the city canceling it altogether. The new vision of the celebration was brought to life by the combined efforts of the city of Boerne, the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce and the Hill Country Mile’s retail and restaurant owners. “We have always had such an

The city loved the idea, and “A Dickens Celebration” was born as a revamped model of Boerne’s beloved “Dickens on Main” tradition. “Our favorite thing about ‘A Dickens Celebration’ is that each weekend is completely different, making sure there is something for everyone, whether you are bringing kids, visiting guests or just want a date night or evening with adults,” Woods said. Several City departments are support the weekends of events, including special projects, parks and recreation, the Boerne Visitors Center and the Patrick Heath Public Library. This support includes promotion for the events, planning and implementing Dickens on Main and the Weihnachts Parade, co-hosting the Toast of Olde Town and Kinder Fest weekends, decorating the public spaces such as Main Plaza for the tree lighting and much more. DICKENS ON MAIN The ϐirst weekend following Thanksgiving, still called “Dickens on Main,’’ will include fan favorites like the ice carving show, snow falling along Main Street, costumed holiday performers and late-night shopping. After 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, November 26-27, guests can stroll along a trafϐic-free Main Street, freely crossing from shop to shop while enjoying holiday music, festivities and fun surprises along the way. Dickens Village (Main Plaza) will have a new schedule full of family fun, including a festive market. As per tradition, the festival ofϐicially will kick off the holidays with the lighting of the tree at 6 p.m. on Friday night followed by trumpeted Christmas carols. Street entertainers will surprise and delight, while shops will be decorated and magically illuminated with twinkling lights throughout the season. Santa Claus also will be present to visit with children. 24

WEIHNACHTS WEEKEND The following weekend, December 3-4, is Weihnachts Weekend, the ϐirst of A Dickens Celebrations’ creative incorporations. Weihnachts Weekend is centered on the locally treasured “Weihnachts Parade” and kicks off at noon on Friday, December 3, with entertainment and the Weihnachts Market at Main Plaza. Guests will be welcome to shop along the Hill Country Mile’s beautiful boutiques and unique shops, grab some food and a beer at one of the local breweries or restaurants, or have coffee and dessert at Boerne’s bistros, bakeries and sweet shops. Saturday, December 4, will feature more shopping and dining followed by the 34th annual Weihnachts Parade at 6 p.m. when downtown will light up with nearly 100 ϐloats spreading holiday cheer along Boerne’s Main Street. Riding on a ϐiretruck at the end of the parade will be Santa Claus. TOAST OF OLDE TOWN For the ϐinal two weekends of celebration, Main Street will be open as usual. Hosted by The Hill Country Mile’s retailers, “Toast of Olde Town’’ will run the following week. The “date night” centerpiece of Dickens will begin with a classic holiday movie in the park on Wednesday, December 8, at the square. The weekend of Friday and Saturday, December 10-11, holiday sweethearts are invited to tour local shops for late-night holiday shopping and toasts with wassail from 5 to 9 p.m. Contributing to the community effort to make Dickens a thrill for all attendees, the Patrick Heath Public library will be offering children’s activities with a festive ϐlair on that Friday and Saturday, allowing parents to drop off the kiddos for some much-needed holiday downtime.

KINDERFEST Finally, also led by Hill Country retailers, Kinderfest, from December 1719, will start with a tasty “cookie crawl” on Friday. Then, the Dienger Trading Co. will welcome guests to meet Santa Claus on Saturday. The fun continues with a downtown scavenger hunt for the entire family. There will be special treats along the way, and real reindeer await at the ϐinish line. The festive weekend will be concluded with a family holiday movie on Sunday evening, December 19. Through all the amazing additions of this year’s celebration, coupled with tradition, Dickens will remain connected to its original spirit of joy and community. MORE INFORMATION “Dickens on Main was founded by downtown business owners more than 20 years ago to attract holiday shoppers to downtown Boerne,” Woods said. “Through the years, the celebration has grown, but we’ve always worked to stay true to the roots of Dickens – to highlight our amazing shops and restaurants and our beautiful historic downtown while offering an amazing weekend of holiday fun to guests and visitors.” There will be parking available in several public lots, including the visitors center, city hall and the Patrick Heath Public Library. People may also park their vehicles on the residential streets adjacent to the festival. Some items throughout the holiday celebration will require tickets. NOVEMBER Stocking Stroll Tickets Go On Sale! November 1, 2023 – TBD. Boerne’s Stocking Stroll (on Dec. 3-4) is one of the area’s most popular shopping events, and only 200 total tickets are available and will be released for sale on November 1. The $30 ticket gets you a tote bag and a ticket showing the 25 participating stores where you will collect special gifts from each as you stroll along the historic Hill Country Mile and beyond. Tickets go fast, and typically sell out in minutes! Your best chance for tickets is to make sure you are pre-registered on the Boerne Parks & Recreation ActiveNet Portal prior to Nov. 1 and have your password handy. Scenic Overlook Nature Hike November 2, 9:00-10:30 AM, @ Guadalupe River State Park, Spring Branch Join a Texas Master Naturalist to learn about local geological features, the importance of water, and local ϐlora and fauna. This easy trail is less than ¾-mile long and mostly level with some rocky areas. All ages and friendly dogs on leash are welcome. No need to register- just show up. Dracula Bites November 2, 7:30-9:30 PM, @ Boerne Community Theater “Dracula Bites” is centered around a play director at a small community theater who is given a cast of misϐits and below average actors to perform the serious play of “Dracula.” Throughout the show, play director Gregory Pastel makes a number of questionable decisions with his cast, which will have the audience laughing uncontrollably.
