Award winning country music artist Mark Chesnutt headlining Ranch Hand Weekend Concert

M

ark Chesnutt’s stature is easily gauged. Mark is easily identified for his string of hits including “Brother Jukebox”, “Blame It On Texas”, “Old Flames Have New Names”, “Old Country”, “It Sure is Monday”, “Almost Goodbye”, “I Just Wanted You To Know”, “Going Through The Big D”, “It’s A Little Too Late”, “Gonna Get A Life”, and one of his biggest chart toppers “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”. Of all the recorded highlights Chesnutt has enjoyed, they take a back seat to his first love; Mark Chesnutt lives to perform on stage. “I just make records because I want people to come see my show,” he says with a grin. “Recording music for folks to just listen to music is great.” He says “But I’ve got to be out there on stage making it.” A native of Beaumont, Chesnutt is known for his neotraditionalist country and honky-tonk influences, with frequent stylistic comparisons to George Jones. He has recorded several cover songs as both singles and album cuts, including covers of Hank Williams Jr., John Anderson, Don Gibson, Conway Twitty, and Charlie Rich. Artists with whom he has collaborated include Jones, Tracy Byrd, Vince Gill, and Alison Krauss. Mark Wright produced all but one of his albums released in the 1990s, while his work since 2005 has been produced by Jimmy Ritchey. Chesnutt has also won 18 KingsvilleRecord.com

November 9, 2023

two awards from the Country Music Association: the Horizon Award (now known as Best New Artist) and Vocal Event of the Year, both in 1993. Chesnutt’s musical style draws mainly from honky-tonk and neotraditional country.Due to both singers hailing from Beaumont, Chesnutt was frequently compared stylistically to George Jones. The Ranch Hand Weekend Country Concert will benefit the Brush Country Court Appointed Special Advocates. “You just have to feel good about attending a fun-filled night of great music while also contributing to a cause benefitting abused and neglected children in the court system.” Reyes said. Ranch Hand Weekend festivities are presented by Kleberg Bank and Neessen Automotive with help from 1Point Five, Bray’s Smokehouse, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Sparklight, Southpoint Rentals, and HEB Helping Here also provide support. Concert tickets are available RanchHandWeekend.com. Visitors can purchase a Ranch Hand Weekend Getaway from a handful of hotels -- tickets to all the weekend’s events, a bottle of wine and some exclusive keepsake gifts will be provided in your room at check-in. These pay-one-price getaway options can be booked by calling the Kingsville Visitor Center at (361) 592-8516.

Country Superstar Doug Stone brings platinum music to Kingsville

C

ountry Superstar Doug Stone is set to bring his platinum music to Kingsville and is one of the headliners at this year’s Ranch Hand Weekend concert. At the age of five Stone learned how to play guitar from his mother who was also a singer and guitarist. When he was seven years old his mother helped him with his singing debut and Doug got to be the opening act for Lorette Lynn. Stone’s parents would eventually divorce and he moved with his father. Growing up he worked hard as a mechanic during the day and at night he would play local venues and bars. It was in his 30s when a manager in Nashville recognized Stone’s talent and unique voice. He was set up with the record label Epic and burst onto the country music scene in 1990. Country music was at an all-time high when he released his first single “I’d Be Better Off (In a Pine Box),” from his debut album “Doug Stone” with Epic Records. The album resulted in several hits including his first number one, “In a Different Light”. That single was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Song. Along with the “Doug Stone” album his second album “I Thought It Was You” were instant successes. Both albums earned a platinum certification from the Recording

RICARDO

Industry Association of America for one million copies sold. In 1992 and 1994 Stone had two more albums that were certified gold. Between 1990 and 1995 Doig Stone had eight number one hits that include “In A Different Light”, “A Jukebox with A Country Song”, “Too Busy Being in Love”, and “Why Didn’t I Think of That”. In 1992 he had quadruple bypass surgery after finding out one of his arteries was almost completely blocked. He had another scare in 1994 when doctors discovered a lump in his nostril. It was benign and while he was recovering “Greatest Hits Vol. 1” was released. Stone recovered and in 1995 he made his acting debut in the movie “Gordy” that featured many of his songs. He also appeared in the 2011 film “When the Storm God Rides”. Stone was in a plane crash in 2000 and sustained some broken bones. He would return to the recording studio where he recorded “Caught Dead Living”. After 33 years Stone has amassed eight #1 singles, 15 top 10 singles, and over 10 million album sales. His fans flock to his concerts and still love his country music. It is will be a night of nostalgia and memories for Doug Stone fans in Kingsville.

FIRESTARTER!

Local pharmacist has been lighting the Ranch Hand Breakfast fires for over 20 years

F

or over 20 years, one local Kingsville icon has helped another local county icon with starting the Ranch Hand Breakfast. In the late 1990’s, third-generation pharmacy icon Nick Harrel of Harrel’s Pharmacy, volunteered to “light the fires” to kick off the Ranch Hand Breakfast. Harrel arrived at the King Ranch around 3 a.m. in the morning, lit the large pile of wooden fuel, and then stoked the embers in order to provide the coals that fuel the massive assembly line of a traditional cowboy breakfast of eggs, sausage, and biscuits and gravy among other things. “A lot has changed over the years since

I did it the first time,” Harrel said. “I’ve learned some valuable tricks over the years that help improve not only the lighting of the fire that eventually furnishes all the coals for the various cooking stations, but also how to keep things moving in delivery of the coals to the various cooking areas.” Last year, Harrel and his small crew of helpers--which included his son--arrived in the early hours of the morning at the location where the fire was to be lit. The King Ranch had already assembled a huge wood pile for Nick and his crew to torch. After over 20 years of lighting the fire, Nick figured out that lighting

• Check the back seat before you leave the vehicle. • Put your purse, briefcase, lunch, etc. in the backseat so you are reminded to look before exiting the vehicle. • Do not let your children play near vehicles. It's dangerous for lots of reasons. • Never leave your child alone in a vehicle. • When entering a parking lot, be sure your child remains with you at all times. Put away your cell phone, shopping lists, or any distraction that may take your eyes off your child, even for a minute. • If you see a child alone in any vehicle call 911.

the fire with matches was not the most economical way to get things started. In 2021, his son fired up a torch, then held it under the large wood pile until it was clear the pile was lit. In a matter of minutes, the fire was started and soon evolved into a roaring blaze that started spewing embers. As the ember pile grew, Nick and his team started shoveling the embers into barrels, and then delivered the embers to the various cooking stations that prepare the food for the legendary Ranch Hand Breakfast. During a break in the action last year, Nick took a time out to rest for a few minutes. Out of the darkness appeared a tall man adorned in a large cowboy hat. The man who appeared out of the gloaming was none other than Robert Hodgen, the CEO of the King Ranch! Robert Hodgen had only been at the helm of the King Ranch a few months, so he decided to do his due diligence and check out what the Ranch Hand Breakfast was all about. Hodgen, Harrel and company had a nice conversation about the breakfast, the history of the King Ranch, and the commu-

nity of Kingsville. Then he was off to check out the grounds that house the Ranch Hand Breakfast. Later, Hodgen could be seen helping the volunteers set up food stations, carry food to those stations, and he even served some of the guests breakfast from his station. “This is something I have enjoyed doing, and it makes me feel part of the King Ranch experience during Ranch Hand Breakfast weekend,’’ Harrel said. “It’s beautiful to see the stars and watch the sun come up. “I guess I’ll keep doing it until I either get too tired to do it, or they ask someone else to do it!” he added with a laugh. After the Ranch Hand Breakfast is over, you’ll want to make a point to visit historic Harrel’s Pharmacy while enjoying all the Ranch Hand Weekend activities located in historic downtown Kingsville. Harrel’s Pharmacy is located in the 200 hundred block of Kleberg Street, and features an old-fashioned soda fountain and lots of nostalgia and memorabilia. It has been featured on the Texas Bucket List television show.

TIPS ON PREVENTING THEFT AND STAYING SAFE When You're In Parking Lots: • Always lock your vehicle and leave the windows up. • Remove the keys. Don't leave your vehicle running or unsupervised. • Don't tempt a burglar by leaving valuables visible in your vehicle. • Park in a well lit area where you can easily see if someone is loitering nearby. • Ask store security to walk you to your car if you are uncomfortable. • Be cautious of people handing out fliers or asking questions in the parking area. • If you have a child, always check your backseat before you leave your car, even if you child is not with you. • If you are on your phone while in the parking lot, be aware that it will divide your attention, restrict your head movement and vision, and interfere with your hearing. This puts you in danger from parking cars with limited visibility and criminals with evil intent. • Keep the registration and insurance information with you and know your license plate number. When You're Out Shopping: • Shop with a friend, there's safety in numbers. • Have your car keys ready in your hand before leaving the store.
