Wait a Second—Who Said Christmas Wasn’t Simple? By Phyllis Kidwell “When the Son of God was born . . . He didn’t come in a show of great power, but as a helpless baby. He didn’t come as an elite, but as the son of a teenage mother. He wasn’t found by the religious leaders, but by the poor outcasts and Gentiles. He wasn’t born into luxury, but slept in an animal’s feeding trough. “So when we celebrate his birth . . . Maybe we need to turn things upside down like God turned things upside down when God moved into the neighborhood and broke all the rules: bringing good news for the poor, giving sight to the blind, and setting captives and the oppressed free.” These thoughts begin our Advent study for this year, with a focus on simplicity. In a season that seems to become more hectic with each event added to our busy calendars, perhaps this is the year to step back and look again at the season. To look again at how we celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. In our Advent study materials, we’ll ponder two questions: 1) How do we simplify the preparation for and celebration of Christmas? And, very much related, 2) How do we keep focused on Christ throughout the season? These questions will be posed over the season of Advent through weekly devotionals, which will be available as paper handouts around
the FPC campus and as a downloadable PDF in our weekly e-newsletter (not on the list? Find the sign-up link on the website: www.fpctyler.com). Now, the answers to these two questions—how do we simplify, and how do we keep our focus on Christ— don’t have simple answers. But we’d like to engage each of you in the conversation as we move toward a simpler approach to Christmas. The church staff will share thoughts and start conversations on the blog where you’re invited to comment (www.fpctyler.com/news), and in addition, there will be a big paper Christmas tree that you’re invited to decorate with your ideas for a simple Christmas. When you enter the main building through the breezeway from the Fellowship Hall, you’ll see the large paper Christmas tree with ornament-shaped notes and markers available for you to contribute your thoughts so that others can contemplate them as well. As Advent begins, join us for the second annual Advent Artfest during the Sunday school hour on November 30. Share fellowship, sing carols, and make Advent crafts as we all get in the spirit of the season together. In addition to the musical offerings and special worship services this season, the church has planned some family-friendly events as well. During the Christmas Spectacular concert, Children’s Ministry will host
1
a special Christmas evening for children age 12 and under. And in addition to the regularly scheduled First Friday Fun, Santa’s WorkSHOP will give kids a chance to contemplate the meaning of Christmas while their parents are free to tackle their to-do list. The annual Christmas pageant, A Child Is Born, will be performed during the 11 o’clock worship service on Sunday, December 14. Stay afterward for a tasty church-wide Christmas luncheon! For details about these events and more, see pages 3–5 of this issue. With this focus on simplicity, perhaps we can all recapture the joy of Christmas that seems to come so easily to children as they anticipate a Merry Christmas! in this issue // December 2014

As moderator of the Session, Stuart Baskin reported that a town hall meeting had been scheduled for Sunday, November 9, to discuss the actions of the PCUSA’s General Assembly in June of this year. He also reported that Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas will be formally dismissed by Grace Presbytery following a $7.8 million settlement and that the church will keep its name. On behalf of the Governance Committee, Jennifer Ainsworth led a discussion on the church’s philosophy of governance to aid the committee’s work in drafting
a statement. Sally Smith Garmon reported on the Mission Committee’s recent trip to Haiti and the progress of FPC’s Solar Under the Sun partnership there. Robyn Files presented the annual report of the Governance Committee on behalf of the Planning and Evaluation Committee. In new business, Arnold Oates reported on the financial needs of Camp Gilmont, urging the church to continue to include Gilmont in the mission budget. Chris Bunt discussed the need for a speedy appointment to the federal judgeship which will soon be left vacant by the retirement of Leonard Davis. The Session passed a motion to draft a letter urging President Obama and Senators Cruz and Cornyn to act quickly. Robyn Files reported on the recent meeting of Grace Presbytery, and Skip Womack was elected to represent FPC at the presbytery meeting in Richardson at the end of November.

As a part of worship that morning, we will all share in song and celebration.
UT Tyler Christmas Concert
Presented by Fine Arts @ FPC Friday, December 5, at 6 pm // Sanctuary free admission First Presbyterian Church is home to the joint concerts of the UT Tyler Patriot Singers and University Chorale, under the direction of Cameron Rose. The Patriot Singers, UT Tyler’s premiere choral ensemble, perform a wide repertoire, from sacred Renaissance music to contemporary vocal jazz. The University Chorale, which joins the Patriot Singers in concert, is UT Tyler’s community choir.
Afterward, join the church family for a catered fellowship luncheon. At the end of the meal, the children will decorate cookies and share in a special story time with Pastor Stuart. RSVP by December 10 (www.fpctyler.com/ events/pageant or 903-597-6317). Adults $12 / Children 12 & under $6 / Children 2 & under free. Pay at the door.
Pancakes with a Side of Mission
4th Annual Bill Wagoner Memorial Pancake Breakfast Sunday, December 7, at 9:30 am // Fellowship Hall All are invited to play hooky from Sunday school class (with the blessing of your teachers, of course!) and attend a morning of pancakes and mission. Help the Men of the Church collect toys for the Tyler Firefighters’ Toy Drive benefiting the Salvation Army—and eat some of their delicious pancakes, hot off the griddle!
Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols
Presented by Fine Arts @ FPC Sunday, December 21, at 6 pm // Sanctuary free admission This annual festival celebrates its ninth season as a Christmas tradition at First Presbyterian Church. The choir prepares carols drawn from the sacred Christmas repertoire, which are interspersed with scripture readings of the Christmas story by choristers, board members, and local dignitaries. This candlelit service draws inspiration from the internationally known Christmas Eve service at King’s College in Cambridge, whose roots can be traced back to the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1880. Sung by members of the Tyler Civic Chorale, this ecumenical service is open to all of our community as we prepare to celebrate the Christmas holiday.
The Mission Committee will report on mission developments and request your input on FPC’s involvement with missions in Haiti, Pakistan, and the local community. You’ll also have a chance to purchase the Legacy Christmas CD, “Nativity Carols and Hymns,” with proceeds going to support Presbyterian Women and Living Waters for the World. As is written in Mark 16:15, God has called us to “go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.”

Family Christmas Eve Service
44th Annual Moravian Lovefeast
Wednesday, December 24, at 3 pm // Chapel The Family Christmas Eve Service sets a peace-filled tone for the afternoon before Christmas. The excitement grows when we involve the little ones in the telling of the most beautiful story of the birth of Jesus Christ. This year we will learn the meaning of a crèche, as we fill the manger scene with the holy family, the hillsides with shepherds and sheep, and travel with the wise men as they follow the star. We’ll sing our most beloved Christmas carols and look at the manger scene through a child’s eyes. All are welcome.
Wednesday, December 24, at 5:30 pm (musical prelude begins at 5:15 pm) // Sanctuary This long-standing worship tradition of scripture and song is accompanied by a “feast”—authentic, homemade Moravian buns and hot cocoa served to each pew of worshipers. The lighting of hundreds of beeswax candles fills the sanctuary with quiet reverence, making for an unforgettable service. For information on volunteering, see the back cover.
