A Precious Cornerstone For A Sure Foundation by Phyllis Kidwell Director of Children’s Ministries Vacation Bible School (VBS) looks a little different this year. In the past, we have used themes that teach the children who attend about the mission programs supported by our local church, such as Solar Under the Sun and Living Waters for the World. This year, we are learning about safe housing and community assistance, using the scriptural reference from Isaiah 28, “…a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation.” Since our participants are too young to actually build on site, the youth of our church are creating a cardboard city. The youth have already started the building process, and it should all be in place by the start of VBS, on Thursday, August 4, at 5:30 p.m. We will continue on Friday evening, at 5:30 and finish on Saturday, meeting from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. During our time together, our evenings will begin with dinner shared by the children, youth and adult helpers. We will decorate the cardboard
city our youth have created, make some stepping stones, practice basic energizers and learn some fun music. Many of our FPC youth will assist in various ways, as they have in the past. The stepping stones we make will be placed just beyond the children’s garden which we share with the Azalea Academy Exceptional Students. The garden is located on the east side of the parking lot. If you haven’t been there, check it out! Vegetables and flowers are growing all summer long. (As a side note – during the spring and summer, the children visit the garden during children’s church. We gather ripe produce to share in their homes, and pray for those who are hungry and do not have enough food.) In preparation for this year’s VBS, here’s what we need from you, the church: •
Prayer for the participants – children we know and those God will send;
•
Prayers for the youth and adults that will facilitate the event; Continued on page 2.

the Tudor Rose Ensemble tours abroad The Tudor Rose Ensemble is a choir of 28 singers, including singers from the Chancel Choirs of First Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church, the Choir School of East Texas and the Tyler Civic Chorale. Former director of music ministries for FPC, Donald Duncan, will be conducting and Jeffrey Ford will be at the organ. The ensemble, including Claudia Carroll, Bill Girard, Joan Curtis, Pamela Leach, Karin Morrow, Wes Schmidt, and Susan Sensenbach from FPC, will be traveling to perform in England and Scotland this summer.
The choral group departs on Sunday, July 10 for London, where they will spend three days touring and enjoying the sights before heading to Ripon Cathedral. The choir will spend four days as the resident choir singing daily Choral Evensong and Sunday Morning Choral Eucharist. Ripon Cathedral is the Cathedral of the Diocese of West Yorkshire and The Dales and home of the cathedra (throne) of the Bishop of Leeds. The Cathedral was founded by St. Wilfrid (c. 634-709) with the first structure dedicated in 672. The
present structure dates back to the late 1100’s. The group will then travel to Edinburgh where they will sing Choral Evensong for the next three days at the Cathedral Church of St. Mary in Edinburgh. St. Mary is part of the Episcopal Church of Scotland. During their time in Edinburgh, the choir will perform a noontime concert at St. Giles’ Cathedral the Mother Church of Presbyterianism which contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle. The Service of Choral Evensong dates back to the time of the Reformation in the 1500’s. It uses elements of the Monastic offices of Vespers and

Compline. The Anglican church uses the same service that was laid out by Archbishop Cranmer’s Book of Common Prayer whose first edition was in 1549. Music was added a few decades later, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, by great composers as Byrd and Tallis. It has been an unbroken tradition since then of presenting fine music with the establishment of Choir Schools all across Great Britain to ensure this tradition of great music for the service. In each decade there are composers that add to the wealth of great music for the service of Choral Evensong. Please keep this group in your prayers as they travel abroad and perform.

A note from our mission co-workers in Zambia
PATH’S Fan Drive has kicked off and so has the summer heat! Help your neighbors keep cool by donating $10 box fans from The Home Depot or by giving monetary donations for PATH to purchase at TylerPATH.org. PATH’S pantry need for this July is canned vegetables. Drop off donations at our PATH collection bins located in Fellowship Hall or in front of the elevator in the Main Building.
Dear friends: Melissa and I want to thank all of your for your love and support of our mission in Zambia. The relationship/partnership we are building with you is amazing, and we look forward to seeing our friendship grow. I’ve shared the impressive work of the CCAP/Zambia Shallow Wells Department, and think of your Solar Under the Sun ministry, wondering if there might be an opportunity to work together with you here one day. Our language studies are going well, thanks in large part to our language helper, Mrs. Mwanza. We look forward to our daily sessions with her, when we work, learn and laugh together. We continue to settle into our house, and the town of Lundazi, and we’re making friends. In fact, they enjoy helping us as we stumble with our Tumbuka. Thanks again for all that you are doing to support our work here. I hope you will plan on coming for a visit one day soon.

Worship Committee to have one worship service at 10 a.m. during the month of July. There will be no Sunday School during that month. Dr. Stuart Baskin noted that our active membership number is growing. He also led the Session in a discussion about reducing the debt of the church. A motion was made to approve to
elect the following commissioners to the meeting of Grace Presbytery on May 26, 2016, in McKinney, Texas: Carol Allen, Wayne Babin, and Carole Cook. Motion passed. Full minutes are available from the church office upon request.

Help an Eagle Scout Project and Hospice of East Texas – Coffee Needed
So, how can you help? Between now and July 16, please bring your donation of coffee (any brand) and place in the designated boxes located in the lobby of Fellowship Hall or on the ground floor by the elevator in the Main Building. Thank you for helping Hospice of East Texas and Bryce McMillian!
Hospice of East Texas spends over $6,000 a year for coffee. A Pollard United Methodist Church scout, Bryce McMillian, discovered this and decided to ease Hospice’s financial stress by gathering as many cans of coffee possible for his Eagle Scout Project. Bryce has reached out to churches around town for help, including First Presbyterian Church.
