Engine Cooling from FPS

The complete cooling solution ONLINE ORDERING AT WWW.FDRIVE.CO.UK

The complete cooling solution The strain put on the modern day engine has led to the cooling system becoming an integral element in vehicle performance. Cooling systems are a major cause of roadside breakdowns, making it important for you to know the parts your customer may need. The FPS cooling range contains a diverse range of parts, many considered to be dealer only.

Products in range: INTERCOOLERS: 1 • Compressed hot air leaving the turbocharger is cooled by the ambient air in the intercooler • Main cause of failure is excessive oil being discharged from the turbo through the intercooler attacking the rubber gaskets and seals Supplier: 2 RADIATORS: • Prevent the overheating of the engine by redistribution of heat • Release the combustion waste heat absorbed by the coolant to the outside air • Causes of failure include: – Fin erosion by road salt – Traffic film causing overheating – Vibrations damaging individual components Suppliers: RADIATOR AND EXPANSION TANK CAPS: 3 • Used to seal off the filling hole of the radiator/expansion tank to ensure the prescribed pressure in the system is maintained • Causes of failure include: – Cracked seals – Failed pressure valve – Failed vacuum relief valve

10

OIL COOLERS: • Designed to keep the engine oil cool at a constant temperature

5

• Main cause of failure is oil sediment blocking internal mechanics

• Main cause of failure is motor burnout Suppliers:

9 WATER PUMPS: • Constantly circulates the coolant throughout the entire cooling circuit, regulating coolant flow rate

Supplier: 6 VISCOUS FAN CLUTCH: The viscous fan clutch is a thermostatic device that regulates the speed of an engine cooling fan. This allows the fan to freewheel when the engine is cold and engage as it warms up

2 6 4

Suppliers: 8

A common symptom of fan clutch failure is overheating at idle or in heavy traffic

5

A fan clutch can also stick when engine power is lost even when the fan is not necessary

7

Suppliers:

10

EXPANSION TANK: 8 • Stores the coolant • Accommodates changes in coolant volume as the coolant goes through its cycle of heating up (expanding in volume) and cooling down (reducing in volume)

THERMOSTATS: 9 • Reduce engine warm-up time and regulate coolant flow to maintain the engine’s operating temperature • Should always be replaced when any related part within the cooling system is replaced

• Causes of failure include: – Cracks, bursts or leaks in the tank – Failed expansion tank cap

• Main cause of failure is rust or corrosion, causing the thermostat to stick in the open or closed position

Suppliers:

Suppliers:

INTERIOR BLOWERS: • Circulate air (warm or cold) around the vehicle • Located between the cabin air filter and the heater radiator • Causes of failure include: – Engine axis misaligned – Faulty heater resistors – Electrical failure of blower fans Suppliers:

13 COOLANT FLANGES: A pivotal component of the cooling system, the coolant flange acts as the junction point for coolant to be distributed to ancillary parts within the engine bay Coolant flanges are generally located around the cylinder and can also house the coolant temperature sensor As they age, the flange can become brittle which then results in coolant leaks

Supplier:

Suppliers:

• Main cause of failure is overheating - If the heater resistor fails the interior blower will only function at its highest speed

HEATER RADIATORS: • Utilise the hot coolant to heat the car interior • Causes of failure include: – Gasket and seal failure – Expanded tube end erosion

1

This type of failure can also decrease fuel economy

HEATER RESISTORS: 7 • Control the speed of the interior blower • If the airflow exceeds a predetermined amount, the resistor reduces airflow

12

• Causes of failure include: – Worn bearings – Damaged or broken shafts – Severe rust and corrosion

FROM THE ENGINE

If no cooling air is required, the clutch switches off and continues to run at a lower speed

Suppliers: RADIATOR FANS (Not a dealer only part!) 4 • Draw external fresh air onto the radiator when necessary to assist in heat dissipation when the vehicle is sat idle • Individual motors and blades are also available on special order

3

Suppliers: 11

COOLING SYSTEM HOSES: • Carry the coolant through entire cooling circuit • Act as either an engine-cooling or interior-heating source • Causes of failure include: – Electromechanical degradation, the number one cause of hose failure – Leakage, heat, ozone, abrasion and oil contamination Suppliers:
