WELCOME

INSIDE THIS ISSUE…

Note from the MD DEAR CUSTOMER,

Welcome to the latest bumper issue of Vital News. This time around, we have more news, more products and more ideas to share with you. This issue features our cover story on FPS Super Branches. FPS is venturing into developing new concepts to increase our reach into the aftermarket and the Super Branches are a big step forward in that direction. We have also invested in our Unique & Niche category, covering grey tails and providing gap-fillers within our existing ranges. Also covered is the Sogefi filtration offering encompassing some unique application coverage as well as a look into engine management technologies with Cambiare ABS sensors and how they can provide you with better sales opportunities. Reacting to the developing and future needs of the industry is vital for the aftermarket and FPS. FILTERS OUT VITAL NEWS explains how you can maximise your application coverage with the SOGEFI GRO

Sogefi Group, the name behind the Fram® and SogefiPro filter brands, is one of Europe’s largest OE and aftermarket filtration specialists, delivering OE credentials as well as all-makes, OE quality aftermarket choice. Sogefi assures the quality and reliability of its filters through advanced, original technologies that are manufactured on its own OE production lines and subjected to the most demanding quality and lifetime tests.

OIL FILTER The oil filter is a vital part of the lubrication process and offers total protection for correct engine operation. It also traps unwanted microscopic contaminants and prevents abrasive wear of the bearings. It is recommended that an oil filter must be replaced with each oil change as its failure can starve the engine of oil. FPS provides access to: more than 450 Sogefi Group oil filters for vehicles, such as Citroën C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi (2006>).

CABIN FILTER The Sogefi Group range of filters affords FPS the coverage to provide for 96% of the vehicle parc on the same day. Access to commercial vehicle (CV) and industrial filters, as well as excellent new-to-range availability, mean that it is an essential addition to the FPS filtration programme. Filters are an essential part of any vehicle’s service schedule. Demand is high and consistent as every service will require a filter. Vehicles today require filters that offer the highest levels of quality, reliability and manufacture and in turn, provide improved fuel economy, passenger comfort and safety, whilst also aiding in prolonging the life of the vehicle.

OIL FILTER

AIR FILTER

On an average, passenger vehicles go for two filter changes every year while the number runs up to six changes per year in the case of commercial vehicles.

FILTRATION EXPLAINED The primary function of any vehicle filter is simple: to prevent particles from entering its various sections. The four basic kinds of filters: air, fuel, cabin and oil and their replacement presents high and consistent demand to the aftermarket. FPS stocks the comprehensive range of Sogefi filters consisting of the Fram® portfolio for passenger vehicles and the SogefiPro range for CV applications. Furthermore, FPS also holds stocks for hydraulic/ transmission and water filters from Fram® available same/ next-day, providing a comprehensive programme to suit all filtration needs.

4 FILTERS

AIR FILTER The air filter is a key component in the air inlet system which filters the air that passes through the combustion chamber. A blocked air filter will have a direct effect on engine performance, restricting air flow into the engine. FPS provides access to: over 1,000 air filter references from the Sogefi Group, covering applications like Ford Tourneo Connect 1.8 TDCi (2009-13).

CALIPER

REMYDY As a safety critical component, brake calipers should always be of unquestionable quality. Here, REMY tells VITAL NEWS the ways to choose a good remanufactured caliper.

Remanufactured brake calipers today are as good as the OE equivalent and represent one of the few organically growing replacement parts markets. With an annual current replacement growth of 5%, this has made brake calipers an increasingly attractive product sector for the professional UK motor factor. They offer fantastic value as a replacement part but being a safety critical item, it is essential that installers select a brand which they can be totally confident will not let them or their customers down.

TRUST REMY Remy, one of the market leaders in remanufactured brake calipers, has a range of over 3,200 part numbers that covers 94% of the UK car parc. Remy offers a 2-year warranty on all products from the date of fitment. The Remy brake caliper warranty returns rate is extremely low and an interesting statistic seen is that a large proportion of these warranty returns on brake calipers are ‘no fault found’. This means that there is a lot of misdiagnosis of caliper problems, resulting in technicians wrongly returning fully functional parts. Remy offers a high level of technical support to the installer Remy’s precise remanufacturing process means: as well as providing installation OE-equivalent finish tips and technical bulletins to Chromium 6 free help ensure they have all the information necessary to do a professional job.

COMMON FAULTS AND DIAGNOSIS There are four common braking faults and ways to diagnose an issue:

• • • •

worn brake pads worn brake discs incorrect brake fluid levels sensor readings

100% new OE quality piston dust seal New or renewed piston meets critical microfinish specifications

QUALITY CHECKED Remy is an ISO certified supplier and focuses on quality during the remanufacturing process, so the finished caliper is as good as the OE equivalent. The precise remanufacturing process employed by Remy is explained in the diagram below. In addition, Remy also takes the remanufacturing process further than the vast majority of other suppliers. All Remy calipers:

• are identified by date and part number for traceability • undergo a final air decay test, employing pressure versus time that involves testing the caliper sealing over a period of time BENEFITS WITH REMY REMANUFACTURED CALIPERS Remy analyses all the warranty returns during inspection, prior to professionally remanufacturing the parts, and the knowhow this provides gives them an edge over OEMs. This results in the production of remanufactured calipers that match, and OE quality rubber seals ensure smooth sometimes are even superior operation and reliability to, the original OE product. Rear parking brake This is because Remy is able hardware installed and tested saving valuable to re-engineer the OE product, installation time thus eliminating many patent problems or faults that they New or identify in the original design. renewed internal components

Handbrake calipers “re-bushed” as required 100% new bleed screws provide trouble-free bleeding and a positive seal

When diagnosing, all of the above probabilities need to be checked. Only when these faults have been examined should the technician look at the caliper, starting with the sliders. If the sliders are fine, then they should make the decision that the brake caliper is faulty and

6 BRAKE CALIPERS

should be replaced. This prevents expensive labour and material costs as well as wasted ramp time owing to misdiagnosis of the fault.

100% new ‘O’ ring

With Remy, motor factors and workshops can rest assured that the remanufactured caliper will function correctly for the end-user, meaning less warranty return claims, better business and more goodwill.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 38

ASSURES DRIVER SAFETY The tyre pressure monitoring law was enforced in November 2014 and any new vehicle in the EU must have a tyre pressure safety device fitted. VITAL NEWS learns about the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) from VEMO. Effective from 1st November 2014, all new cars in the European Union must be supplied with TPMS and this is now being tested as part of the MOT road worthiness test. Any vehicle that originally had TPMS fitted as standard, will fail an MOT test if it has been removed or is found to be faulty. In order to support the workshop professionals with the exchange of TPMS sensors, FPS now stocks VEMO: a quality brand that offers tyre pressure sensors pre-programmed and ready to install.

WHAT ARE TPMS SENSORS? TPMS sensors are a safety device that monitor tyre pressure and are designed to alert the driver when there is an under-inflated tyre, increasing driver safety and minimising unnecessary wear and tear. Having the correct tyre pressure also avoids excessive fuel consumption. Scientific research shows that driving a vehicle with a tyre pressure of 0.2 bar too little, leads to 5% more urban fuel consumption. In an indirect system, ABS sensors can calculate tyre pressure incorrectly by measuring the wheel speed. In a direct system, TPMS sensors are installed internally on each tyre valve to measure the exact air pressure and temperature directly at the valve of each tyre. Every sensor has a unique identification, which it transmits to a receiver via wireless remote frequency at 433 MHz (Euro standard). The receiver then transmits the data to the vehicle’s onboard system and warns the driver immediately if the tyre Sensor valves are vulnerable to damage during tyre pressure decreases below the replacement and corrosion which means they may ideal level for the specific tyre. need to be replaced

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 38

FAULTS AND REPLACEMENT TPMS sensors are powered by an internal battery that cannot be replaced because the sensor is filled with a stabilising gel material to cushion and protect the sensitive elements inside. The battery life is expected to last up to 8-10 years, dependent on annual mileage.

Sensor valves normally require replacing after around 5 years or a mileage of 100,000 miles as they weaken with time and usage. With every transmission of data, the sensor will also send a battery state signal, which workshop tools can use to diagnose a low battery. In addition to the regular wear, a mechanical defect such as corrosion on the valve can lead to faults within the TPMS sensor.

ADVANTAGE: VEMO VEMO TPMS sensors are ready-2-go, complete with seals, nuts, valve cores and valve caps that ensure a quick and convenient replacement. These high-quality TPMS sensors are protected by an antistatic packaging foil. The film is mixed with The fully kitted-out VEMO TPMS sensors a special additive in order to prevent the sensors from electric charges and protect the programmed chip components inside.

Popular applications include Ford Mondeo, Fiesta, Focus; Audi A4, A6, Q7; CitroĂŤn C4, C5; Mazda 3, 5; Vauxhall Vectra, Signum; Renault Clio, Megane, Scenic and Volvo V70, S40 and C30. Please get in touch with your local FPS representative to know more about VEMO TPMS sensors.

COVER STORY

FPS made an investment into its expansion strategy in 2014 and developed a network of ‘Super Branches’ throughout the UK. VITAL NEWS tells you more about how these branches stand to boost your selling power in 2015 and ahead. In order to support our customers and suppliers, FPS has always taken the view that if we put as much product as close to the factor as possible, it will reflect true demand and increase sales for us both. This means width of range, supported by an efficient internal replenishment process to maintain same day availability. We have spent many years trying to develop this and have recently taken another step forward by putting an additional £1.5 million worth of stock closer to our customers.

ORIGIN At the beginning of 2014, we at FPS decided that the time was right to invest further. With product ranges growing faster than ever, due to new vehicle manufacturer technology coming through to the aftermarket, we felt factors would appreciate more same-day support across the increasing number of parts.

VITAL NEWS catches up with one of its newest partners, HELLA’s air conditioning specialists, BEHR HELLA SERVICE to examine how motor factors can take advantage of the growth in the air conditioning sector. With 90% of new vehicles on the UK roads fitted with air conditioning, the air-con service area is a growing revenue raiser. Motorists spend an estimated £102 million annually to keep their cars cool and while the UK weather is unpredictable, the seasonal demand for air conditioning system repairs brings great opportunities for the motor factors.

Hudson adds, “A clear benefit of our partnership with FPS is that customers have access to quality components at short notice, with parts delivered same or next day, putting them in a better position to capitalise on seasonal demands”.

A wide range of product variations for complex air conditioning systems and the changeable British climate make it impossible for motor factors to predict the demand for individual stock items. However, an unexpected heat wave will inevitably lead to a sudden spike in sales. Therefore, being able to access a wide range of quality products quickly is key to keeping customers cool and revenue flowing.

QUALITY FIRST Behr HELLA Service is the joint venture between global OE giant HELLA and air conditioning specialist Behr and has the largest range of OE parts for European vehicles currently available. Over the past decade, Behr HELLA Service has become established as one of the leading suppliers in the field of air conditioning for the aftermarket industry. The complete range of over 2,000 air conditioning parts and oils from Behr HELLA Service is available through FPS. This range includes popular parts such as compressors, condensers and receiver driers and spans over 62,000 vehicle applications. Steve Hudson, Senior Product Manager at HELLA explains that when choosing parts, the quality of the replacement component is critical. “The benefit of buying quality components is quite simple: reduced failure rate. Cheaper, non-OE parts are not cost-effective in the long term as in our experience they are more likely to fail. This results in dissatisfied customers, higher returns and reduced revenue”. Poor quality products are flooding the market to service the evergrowing air conditioning sector, posing as a problem for the industry, when the above factors are taken into consideration.

HOT ON SERVICE Behr HELLA Service is reputed for its service competence. This includes:

• providing technical information and support through bulletins • helpline for technical support • online training portal – HELLA Tech World • one-to-one training for the independent aftermarket and garages It is a combination of quality products, service and fast delivery that aims to add value to a motor factor’s business operations. For more information on the range of Behr HELLA Service air conditioning products, please contact your local FPS representative.

AS EASY AS Safety concerns have been driving the automotive sensor market towards newer and more effective technology. Here, CAMBIARE explains the working of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensors to VITAL NEWS and how it can bring stability to your sales. The 1990s saw safety emerge as a major consideration and features such as traction control, stability control systems and anti-lock braking system (ABS) have been applied across a wide sector of the industry. Since 2012, the fitment of ABS as a standard has been mandated for all passenger cars and light vehicles. Cambiare, the vehicle electronics specialist, has a portfolio of over 350 ABS sensors. It is adding a further 100 parts to its range soon to cover applications like Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 (07/2008>), Renault Megane 1.6 (09/2002-02/2008) and Volvo V70 2.0 (03/2010>).

ABS SENSORS AND THEIR WORKING ABS uses a wheel speed sensor, commonly called an ABS sensor, to monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. These sensors send the information to an electronic brake control module (EBCM), which in turn controls the operation of the electrohydraulic unit that regulates the flow of brake fluid to each wheel brake. Although there are numerous variations of ABS sensors, they all fall into two categories:

• Inductive ABS sensors (Passive) – when no additional power supply is required • Hall Effect ABS sensors (Active) – when a power supply is connected to the sensor INDUCTIVE ABS SENSOR (PASSIVE) Essentially, the sensor comprises of a coil wrapped around a magnet. This sensor is positioned close to the ‘reluctor ring’ which consists of a toothed ring mounted on the wheel hub. Each time a tooth of the ring passes the sensor, a small electrical voltage is induced within the copper coil. This voltage is transmitted to the ECU in the form of a sinusoidal signal (or a sine wave) that is used to calculate the vehicle’s wheel speed.

THE ABS PRINCIPLE ABS is a safety system that prevents wheel lock during braking. This enables the driver to maintain steering control and avoid uncontrolled skidding.

Not only does the modern ABS prevent wheel lock under braking, it may also electronically control the brake bias towards all brakes. This function, depending on its specific capabilities and implementation, is known as electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). Other functions of the anti-lock braking system can include traction control, emergency brake assist and electronic stability control (ESC), depending on the system and manufacturer.

ABS also provides improved vehicle control and decreased stopping distances on dry or slippery surfaces. However, ABS will not offer any benefits on ice/snow-covered roads as there isn’t enough traction between the tyre and the road.

MOVING TARGET RELUCTOR RING

This is a basic form of an ABS sensor and is susceptible to interference or false cycling from factors such as a corroded reluctor ring or debris on the sensor head. The inductive ABS sensor does not start working until the vehicle has achieved a speed of 3-5mph.

HALL EFFECT ABS SENSOR (ACTIVE) A Hall Effect sensor is an active sensor that uses the addition of a power supply to create a digital output. The power supply is connected to a Hall Effect element creating a consistent current flowing through it. When the element is subjected to a magnetic field of sufficient strength and polarity created by the passing reluctor ring, it deflects the current across the Hall Effect element creating an on/off voltage signal. This type of sensor will start working straightaway and doesn’t suffer from false cycling. It is more sensitive and accurate than a passive sensor, allowing systems such as electronic stability programmes to be incorporated in modern ABS systems.

DIGITAL SIGNAL RELUCTOR RING

In both passive and active ABS sensors, a signal (either sinusoidal or digital) is transmitted to the ECU that uses the data to determine the wheel speed and evaluate whether the ABS should intercede to control braking. The vehicle is at its maximum stability when all the four tyres have traction and are spinning at the same rate.

MALFUNCTIONING ABS SENSOR Wear and tear is the most common reason for an ABS sensor failure on any vehicle. The position of the sensor and constant movement of the vehicle’s steering and suspension make it vulnerable to detrimental factors such as:

• heat from the brakes • vibrations • threat of dirt and moisture ingress Generally, a scan tool is used to diagnose an ABS sensor problem. A digital multimeter or oscilloscope reads the pulse and accurately

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 38

Cambiare recommends that the vehicle should be driven a short distance following the replacement of a faulty sensor for the system to recognise the new part. Failure to do so may result in the fault code not clearing, giving the impression that the new part is faulty too.

The parts are produced in state-of-the-art facilities, conforming to international manufacturing standards, including TS16949 and ISO9001:2008. This ensures that these sensors deliver increased reliability when compared to other products available in the independent aftermarket.

THE REAL DEAL INA, the inventor of the overrunning alternator pulley (OAP), stresses to VITAL NEWS the benefits of investing in genuine parts to protect the vehicle’s front end accessory drive (FEAD) system. As a development partner and OE supplier to virtually every vehicle manufacturer around the globe, INA is at the forefront of modern engine technology. INA’s engineering team developed the hugely successful overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) to help the front end accessory drive (FEAD) system cope with ever-increasing demands from larger, more powerful alternators. The alternator has the biggest impact on the FEAD system and the OAP counters this by allowing the alternator to decouple from the drive system, thus preventing premature wear and helping the engine run smoothly. With an aftermarket range of over 160 part numbers available through FPS, INA offers a portfolio to rely on for genuine OE OAP units.

With fewer cylinders and engines without a balancer shaft as seen in modern vehicles, the combustion cycle becomes more volatile and the FEAD system has to compensate and work harder to quell the higher vibration values. It is therefore critical that the OAP and FEAD systems are checked regularly for wear, correct operation and noise, all of which are tell-tale signs that the FEAD system needs maintaining.

DIAGNOSIS AND REPLACEMENT Failure of a worn OAP is commonly misdiagnosed as tensioner failure due to excessive belt slap. But the tensioner breaks only when it operates way outside its normal tolerances. A broken tensioner

CHANGING TIMES, CHANGING NEEDS In a bid to reduce CO2 emissions and comply with the demands of EU legislation, smaller, lighter and more powerful turbocharged threecylinder engines have been developed. These engines are built with higher output alternators that handle all the electrical gadgets that are considered as standard equipment on a modern car.

A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE Changing the tensioner alone will only treat the symptom and not the cause, leading to repeat failure. The issue could instead be with a worn OAP that is no longer allowing the alternator to overrun, protecting the FEAD system from vibrations and premature wear.

The 1.0L engine in a Daihatsu Charade (1988-92) generated just 53bhp and needed an agonising 15sec to propel the 2,000lb hatchback to 60mph, albeit with a reasonable 38mpg highway fuel economy rating. The Ford Fiesta (2014) also has a three-cylinder 1.0L engine, but produces 123bhp, has a 45mpg highway fuel economy and gets to 60mph in 8sec, while weighing 800lb more than the Charade! Daihatsu Charade (1988-92)

INA’s specialised tools for OAP replacement

The OAP can be identified by its distinctive black protection cap and requires the use of a special tool to ensure a professional removal and replacement.

PROTECTION GUARANTEED A genuine INA OAP continues to maintain its full running properties even in the unlikely event of a failure as it is engineered to fail in a ‘locked’ position. This allows the auxiliary belt to continue driving the alternator even when the internal mechanism of the OAP has failed. Since no other brand includes this critical feature, there will be no drive to the alternator when it fails. It is therefore wise to always go for a genuine INA part, as it guarantees against emergency breakdowns. Ford Fiesta (2014)

FILL THE GAPS WITH FTE CLUTCH HYDRAULICS VITAL NEWS learns how the gap-filling range of clutch hydraulics from FTE bolsters FPS’ portfolio. FPS’ ongoing initiative to introduce gap-fillers within existing ranges and help provide wider application coverage has prompted the introduction of a new range of clutch hydraulics from FTE. This range of popular references, available the same day from FPS branches, allows customers to access the newest clutch hydraulics technologies. The newly introduced products will enhance the factors’ sales opportunities for applications on modern vehicles that may have not been available previously in the aftermarket. For more than 70 years, FTE has been at the forefront of automotive hydraulics technology. Based in Germany, FTE is the global market leader and supplier of OE clutch hydraulics systems to numerous vehicle manufacturers worldwide and has extended its expertise to the aftermarket as well.

COMMON REASONS FOR FAILURE The most common issue for clutch master and slave cylinders is contamination of the hydraulic fluid or even the wrong type of hydraulic fluid being used. The smallest drop of contaminant, such as engine oil, gearbox oil, washer fluid or antifreeze can cause the rubber seals within the cylinder to swell up overtime. When this happens, the cylinder can no longer work properly and can seize. Often, the contaminant is introduced into the hydraulic system when using the same funnel or pouring container, between different types of fluids. When replacing CSCs, the most common cause for failure is not using the correct bleeding procedure and therefore special care must be taken by the installer to follow the correct process. FTE provides fitting instructions, hints and tips on each part number box for all CSCs, clutch master and slave cylinders to aid the installer during fitment.

TECHNOLOGY AND FUNCTIONALITY Clutch hydraulics are an integral part of the modern vehicles stopstart system and over years, FTE has developed innovative solutions, in particular hydraulic sensor technology, in conjunction with vehicle manufacturers, to drive efficiency and economy demanded by the vehicle driver today.

COMPETITION WINNER Congratulations to the lucky winner of the January Vital News competition: Shane Lawrence from Jayar (Sittingbourne) Ltd. in Kent.

FPS TAKES FLIGHT On 13th March 2015, FPS completed what is believed to be the first UK commercial delivery to be made by a drone, from their Sheffield distribution centre to local customer Brakeline. The trial was a “proof of concept” project, investigating the feasibility of drones being used to carry out an immediate, local service. Current legislation on the size and weight of items carried and restrictions on locations for flying mean that deliveries of this kind will not be commonplace any time soon for FPS. However, the exercise has made it clear that the possibility cannot be ruled out in the longer term, in line with the company’s far-reaching future vision.

L to R: Peter Dancer (Kilen Springs UK), Shane Lawrence from Jayar (Sittingbourne) Ltd., Kent and Jane Galea, Territory Manager, FPS Maidstone.

Shane was thrilled to win a 64GB Apple iPad Air 2, courtesy of Kilen Springs. For your chance to win a 64GB personalised iPad Air 2 from Blue Print, simply spot the 5 differences in the images on the back page and send it to FPS by 26th May 2015. All the best!

The modified DJI s1000 drone used in the delivery was flown under strict conditions, by qualified pilots, with permission from the CAA for aerial work. The proof of concept video and more information can be found on the FPS website at www.fpsdistribution.com

COMMON SALE DIESEL VITAL NEWS understands how CR DIESEL can inject profits into your common rail system sales. Environmental awareness and emission legislations necessitate the release of cleaner exhaust gases from diesel engines. The European emissions regulation Euro VI mandates that particulate and NOx emissions from diesel engines now need to be as low as petrol vehicles. Common rail systems are one of the primary means of complying with these legislations as they improve the timing and quality of fuel delivery into the combustion chamber by increasing the frequency of fuel injection. This indicates a significant opportunity for replacement common rail fuel injectors and pumps. However, the high cost of these components means that they are not typically stocked by factors.

CR Diesel, an OE approved remanufacturing programme, offers a range of Bosch, Delphi, DENSO and VDO branded common rail diesel injectors and pumps to the aftermarket through FPS.

COMMERCIAL FOCUS CR Diesel injectors and pumps are not just fitted to passenger vehicles; a large number of parts have commercial vehicle (CV) and light commercial vehicle (LCV) suitability as well. This represents a great opportunity for distress sales as these vehicles need to be back on the road as soon as possible, since their business loses revenue every minute they are off the road. The CR Diesel range of injectors and pumps covers vehicles used by a wide variety of trades from electricians and delivery vehicles to builders and farmers. It also covers vehicles such as taxis, vans, pickup trucks and 4x4s. Currently, CR Diesel offers 90 common rail fuel injectors and 46 pumps that cover CV and LCV applications.

Over the years, the CR Diesel brand has established itself in the UK aftermarket as a reliable and competitively priced provider of injectors and pumps to meet all common rail needs. CR Diesel has access to 240 common rail fuel injectors, 137 pumps and assorted ancillary products, such as fuel rails in range. Top sellers include:

• •

A2CS9S11612 Common rail fuel injector: Ford Fiesta (2009>) 9044A130A Common rail fuel pump: Ford Mondeo MkIII (2000-2007)

ASSURANCE OF QUALITY Common rail injection operates at significantly high pressures (2,000+ bar, system dependent), helping the system provide better fuel atomisation and needs extremely fine tolerance throughout the system. This requires precise parts as even the slightest defect in the component design or a compromise in quality could cause a terminal failure within the fuel system. Using non-OE standard parts could risk the garage and their customers thousands of pounds in components and hours of lost time, if something goes wrong. Therefore, it becomes essential to always source an OE-approved programme that remanufactures the parts in the same manner as the original unit. All CR Diesel injectors and pumps are remanufactured in accordance with ISO9001:2008 and tested on the OE manufacturers’ equipment. Each unit is built using genuine OE parts and the programme is backed by a 2 year/40,000 miles warranty.

CLOSE TO THE WIRE

Spring specialist KILEN explains to VITAL NEWS how budget brands could actually cost more in the long run where coil springs are concerned.

Coil springs are subjected to high levels of stress as they support the weight of the vehicle whilst isolating it from the road. They are also constantly exposed to the elements as well as to stones and grit off the roads, so they need to be made from high quality materials with their surfaces suitably protected from corrosion, to ensure the product withstands years of dynamic use. Kilen produces the world’s largest range of coil springs for the aftermarket and operates a distribution network holding well over a million units. The current Kilen coil spring range features over 4,700 parts, including an additional 400 parts introduced into the 2015 catalogue. Kilen’s partnership with FPS means same-day delivery is available across almost the entire range.

COST VS VALUE Often the labour costs associated with a coil spring replacement are more than the cost of the spring itself, so it makes sense to always choose quality over price. It has been commonly observed that the poor quality steel used in some ‘budget’ springs on the market exhibit surface and inner defects. These defects reduce the spring’s fatigue strength, leading to premature sag and increasing the risk of an early breakage.

In order to provide a choice for installers, Kilen’s 2015 coil spring catalogue now includes a range of 86 tapered wire alternatives to sit alongside the existing parallel wire designs. The vast majority of OE springs are produced from parallel wire material; however a small proportion is produced from tapered wire. Although Kilen continues to supply parallel wire for both types of OE, it now offers the installer a choice: parallel wire for durability or tapered wire for the OE look. The Kilen coil spring range is continuously reviewed and new parts or catalogue amendments are communicated regularly. Electronic catalogues are updated automatically to ensure customers have access to the newest springs in the range as quickly as possible – minimising the need to choose expensive OE springs, even on more modern vehicles.

QUALITY ASSURED All Kilen springs are guaranteed to match or exceed the quality of their OE equivalents - backed up by ‘matching quality’ certification. This means they can be installed with confidence during a routine service without invalidating the manufacturer’s warranty, unlike some cheaper aftermarket alternatives.

Budget springs are susceptible to breakage

Only a few steel mills worldwide are capable of achieving the necessary surface tension and internal wire quality required for modern suspension springs and Kilen sources only the highest-grade, specialist spring steel from selected mills for its coil springs.

UNIQUE & NICHE PROJECT VITAL NEWS takes a look at some of the new part introductions brought in as a result of FPS’ In Vital News issue 35, FPS’ focus on unique and niche parts was first introduced, presenting the dedicated effort of identifying products not typically associated with FPS, with the objective of making parts, perhaps considered dealer-only, available to the aftermarket and ultimately opening up new opportunities for motor factors. The three areas that the initiative has been designed to develop are Emerging Technology, Application Gaps and Niche Products and almost twelve months on, there have been numerous introductions.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY This makes reference not only to both new product groups and technological developments within existing products, but also to areas that may have been supplied on vehicles for some time, but have yet to be made widely available to the aftermarket. FTE Clutch Hydraulics A n example of an existing product group having to develop on clutch hydraulics; increasingly the trend is the use of sensors incorporated into the Concentric Slave Cylinder, Master Cylinder and the traditional Slave Cylinder to facilitate stop-start technology, where the sensor detects the hydraulic pressure from the pushing of the clutch pedal to restart the engine. FTE has been a pivotal innovator of this technology, in partnership with the vehicle manufacturers. As detailed on page 15.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors Whilst the sensors have been fitted to cars for a number of years, replacement units required programming to the vehicle and the application-specific diagnostic equipment meant the product remained dealer-led.

Forward-facing Cameras Not only component based, emerging technology can also relate to products whose usage is becoming more prevalent. Forward-facing cameras, available from Yada, provide peace of mind for users, can be used as evidence and can protect a driver from many of the issues faced on the roads today, including conflicting reports of actual events where there may not have been any witnesses.

APPLICATION GAPS As explained in the original article, even the most committed supplier will have gaps in their range, and there are examples of parts introduced this year that have been added alongside wellknown brands and have proven extremely successful. Heater Resistors are available via Valeo and Hella, yet neither could cover certain Vauxhall applications – both part numbers 13200646 and 13248240 have been introduced to cover these known failing applications.

Fuel Pumps are also an established product group for FPS, yet a highly sought-after OE fuel pump (part number 0986444522) for the Ford Transit Mk 6 2.0/2.4 (2000-06) was a gap in the range. Now available from FPS, the pump has been known to fail at varying intervals and is generally associated with the load/driving style it has been subjected to.

A Vauxhall Wiper Motor (part number 23000826) has also proven to be a worthwhile addition to the established range –whereas on the European models, the motor is protected from the elements by the wipers, the motor is exposed on the vehicle on the right hand drive model where the wipers have been switched, which leads to high failure rates.

With pre-programmed units now available and MOT legislation changing, TPMS will be a growth area over the coming years. See page 7 for a full overview.

If you have had any recent demands for one-off products, and they are not yet part of FPS’ programmes, 20 UNIQUE AND NICHE PARTS

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 38

CONTINUES TO GROW research initiative. NICHE PRODUCTS The niche platform is designed to identify slower moving products or parts that only fail on certain applications and therefore do not warrant a full programme; to bring them to the forefront, presenting the fact that they are available to the aftermarket. Some of these products have been showcased in our monthly newsletter, Newsdesk in the ‘I Didn’t Know You Did That’ section and some further examples are: A Gearshift Control Cable for a 2001-on Vauxhall Vivaro (part number 93198347) typically fails with excess urban use, where gear changes are far more frequent. T ransmission Filters are designed to keep transmission fluid clean. Every transmission system will eventually accumulate debris from normal wear and tear. Common faults include pollution of the filter by material wear and dirt passing through the filter, resulting in clogging of the control unit which can lead to gear failure. It is vital that the transmission fluid is kept clean so that the valve body and other vital components do not become clogged making them inoperable. By regularly replacing the transmission filter, the transmission life span will be extended. C lutch Release Forks are an integral part of the vehicle’s clutch mechanism and operates the release bearing via a cable or rod and linkage. The fork itself can be responsible for difficulty in selecting gears, as not only does it suffer wear and tear, it can also become bent not allowing the full actuation of the clutch release bearing, therefore not fully disengaging drive. Two Air Spring Boots (part numbers 80001151 and 8000152), covering Mercedes Vito and Viano are now in range and assist in preventing chassis components and adjacent parts from damage, thereby reducing the need for expensive repairs to shock absorbers and the entire suspension system.

Sliding Door Roller Guides can fail with excess use, and the plastic roller within the unit is particularly susceptible to failure – a short range of Fiat, Mercedes and VAG replacement units are now available to serve these problematic applications. Glow Plug Control Units (GCUs) for Astra, Zafira and Corsa are the timing controls for glow plugs. They activate the plugs via an electrical current, heating the cylinders to the right temperature for the diesel fuel to ignite. P edal Rubbers are fitted on millions of vehicles but some are known to repeatedly fail, such as the Vauxhall Corsa – the rubber wears thin, then splits and drops off, leaving just the bare metal pedal which can be extremely slippery. A range of Hub Nuts from Shaftec has been introduced to complement the CV Joint and Driveshaft programmes and should ideally be replaced with a new unit whenever they are removed, when either servicing or replacing a CVJ or Driveshaft. Gear Change Rods and Gear Lever Bush kits are available in both plastic and metal, depending on the OE specification. Over time, the bushed ends or knuckle joints wear. This is particularly evident on French-manufactured vehicles, where the system contains more parts, which increases the possibility of failure. Symptoms can include a difficulty in selecting gears when the gear lever becomes floppy or loose.

The Emerging Technology, Application Gaps and Niche Products groups are constantly evolving and the next twelve months will see further additions to the FPS portfolio – before potentially losing a sale or going to the dealer, factors are encouraged to enquire with FPS to see if it is already available to the aftermarket.

please feedback to us via product@fpsdistribution.co.uk, and we will endeavour to add them into range. VITAL NEWS ISSUE 38

UNIQUE AND NICHE PARTS 21

IS YOUR ENGINE MOUNT FAIL-PROOF? CORTECO has been filling the gaps within FPS’ range with specialist parts and uses its expertise to explain to VITAL NEWS why the choice of engine mount is such a crucial decision. Engine mounts are fundamental to vehicle vibration control as they absorb drive torque and the forces of inertia during acceleration and cornering. Furthermore, they absorb vibrations caused by the:

• combustion process • contact with the road As safety-critical components, engine mounts are subject to MOT tests and so garages expect motor factors to deliver only those brands that meet the highest standards. Numerous vehicles on the UK roads today are equipped with engine mounts that contain very complex technology. However, not all of the available replacement brands provide the same level of complexity and performance as Corteco provides.

MODERN MOUNTS FOR MODERN VEHICLES Corteco points out that engine mount technology on the latest generation of vehicles is far more advanced, which makes the assurance of OE quality even more essential. For example, engine mounts on the Audi A6, such as part no. 80004297, contain a series of internal chambers. When the driver switches to ‘sports’ mode, an alcohol-based substance moves between these chambers in order to ‘stiffen up’ the suspension. This anticipates the additional load on the engine caused by increased speed and/or more demanding road conditions. Consequently, the engine mounts give added protection to the engine, while maintaining the quality of the ride.

CHOOSE WISELY It is always advisable to choose a quality part where engine mounts are concerned. Tests carried out by Corteco highlight that some aftermarket engine mounts fall short of OE performance criteria. All the engine mounts tested were subject to two well-established, standard OE industry test procedures:

• Spring load test that examines performance under load • Dynamic load testing, or the sweep test, which helps determine various outcomes, including the level of durability and fatigue It is worth remembering that not all engine mounts are the same and it is what is inside the rubber casing that really counts. Excessive rigidity can cause the engine to lift higher than the ‘normal’ position, making it tilt to one side. This increases the tensile force on the driveshaft, thus increasing wear and tear. Vibration levels also Section through a increase if the damping is Corteco engine mount too low. This is transmitted initially through to the engine, and from there, throughout the entire vehicle. This can cause problems when driving off or simply through idling, for example.

22 ENGINE MOUNTS

The latest in engine mount technology, as fitted to the Audi A6

WHY CHOOSE CORTECO? A high level of OE technical expertise like Corteco’s is required to produce parts capable of satisfying the broad range of functions that hydraulic engine mounts must perform to meet the vehicle manufacturers’ criteria. While many parts might fit, only a careful selection guarantees the right one for the job. FPS stocks more than 400 engine mount references from Corteco. While popular applications such as part no. 80001347 for Vauxhall Meriva 1.3 CDTi (2006-09) are available to order same/next day, non-stocked lines are available for special order.

NEWSDESK EXTRA 23

REV IT UP VITAL NEWS explores the new GS motorcycle battery portfolio. GS Batteries offers one of the widest ranges of motorcycle aftermarket batteries in the UK. Over 150 references are available so that users can find an exact match for their original battery. Four distinct battery ranges encompass conventional batteries, the conventional CB series, the maintenance-free AGM and the high-performance AGM batteries.

BATTERY BASICS The GS motorcycle battery range offers three battery types and depending upon the application, can be a choice of:

• Dry Charged (DC): a battery without acid which needs to be filled. o Separate acid bottles are available in two sizes: 500cc and 985cc. • Wet Charged (WC): a filled and charged battery. o The open circuit voltage (OCV) needs to be checked on a regular basis and may need periodic charging. • Combi Pack (CP): a battery complete with a pre-measured acid pack. o Contains the correct level of acid required to fill the battery.

GS maintenance-free AGM batteries are permanently sealed batteries that never need refilling. GS high-performance AGM batteries are loaded with features, providing the highest reliability with the most cranking power. They are equipped with GS gas recombinant technology which eliminates water loss. Once filled with electrolyte, the battery is permanently sealed, meaning no more checking of electrolyte levels, therefore protecting valuable bikes, parts and accessories from electrolyte damage. The GS high performance AGM range has all the features of a standard maintenance-free battery.

Combi pack batteries are growing in popularity due to the simplicity of filling the battery; unlike dry charged batteries, a combi pack comes with the exact amount of acid required to fill it, ensuring that the battery is not under or overfilled. It is also a safer way to fill motorcycle batteries. Wet charged batteries are used in certain highperformance/superbike applications, where the YTZ type battery is required for exact OE replacement and are unique to GS Batteries.

Both the AGM high performance and maintenance-free ranges are good for motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, utility vehicles, riding mowers, personal watercrafts and snowmobiles.

FPS’ main focus is on the GS combi pack range, with 26 of the most popular references in stock, available for next-day delivery.

RANGE OVERVIEW GS conventional batteries use the patented Polymion technology and an advanced separator technology to reduce resistance and generate 30% more starting power than other conventional batteries as well as shorter charge time and superior charge retention. GS conventional CB series uses a special lead alloy to reduce selfdischarge which offers maximised starting power, even after months of storage. The CB series uses an active material compound designed to resist vibration and features the most advanced technological battery construction methods. Both the conventional and conventional CB ranges of batteries are ideal for accessory-laden touring bikes and modified vehicles.

24 MOTORCYCLE BATTERIES

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF AGM BATTERIES

• Absorbent Glass Mat separators: o for faster recharging and higher performance • Compressed plate packs: o to protect against damage due to vibration o to maximise cycle life • Factory-sealed and activated EXTRA All GS motorcycle batteries offer the industry standard six month warranty and may require periodic charging when fitted. (Note: Motorcycle batteries are not available on MAM Autocat+). A GS Motorcycle batteries catalogue and application guide is available to download; please visit the non-components section on the F:Drive and click ‘Motorcycle/Care and Maintenance’ or more information or contact your local FPS representative.

HIT THE ROAD WITH

As more and more families choose to spend their holidays on road trips, the market for load carrier systems is opening up. VITAL NEWS learns how MONT BLANCŽ caters for this sector. Mont Blanc is an established name in the travel and leisure sector. Since the company was founded in 1947, Mont Blanc has developed into one of the leading manufacturers in this sector and is often the global car industry’s first choice of supplier in the face of extremely stiff competition. Mont Blanc has production sites in France, Romania and Sweden along with a sales and technical support centre in the UK, while its products are sold all over the world.

RANGE OVERVIEW Mont Blanc offers a full and comprehensive range of products including cycle carriers, dog guards, roof boxes, roof bars and general accessories. The brand offers over 450 product references in stock at FPS, delivering orders the next day, all backed up with a 3 year guarantee and a spares service, to cover most needs.

bars and the cycles. Some of these carriers can hold 29" bikes and are built with an increased maximum weight limit of 17kg. All towball carriers are lockable once fitted to the vehicle and offer 2, 3 and 4 bike carrying options. The platform carriers can be tilted to enable access to the boot of the car. They are partially manufactured from aluminium, and are fitted with a full lighting board. The carriers are fitted with oversize wheel holders and the universal securing system can accommodate cycle frame sizes from 22-80mm.

DOG GUARDS The dog guard range provides universal fitting options for various vehicle sizes. An easy-to-use twist locking mechanism on the Tube and Mesh dog guards enables an easy and secure fitment, without the need for any assistance.

CYCLE CARRIERS The past few years have seen a continued growth in the sale of bikes in the UK. The London Olympics, Tour de France and Commonwealth Games have all influenced the sales of bikes and generated a growing demand for cycle-carrying accessories. Mont Blanc offers a wide choice of rear, roof and towball mounted cycle carriers. The Headrest dog guard provides a rigid and secure fixing that competes with many tailored/vehicle-specific dog guards available in the market. The quick attachment system comes with two different length hooks and enables universal fitment to most headrests. The side panels are easy to adjust and are provided with a single quick fixing clamping system on each side. Mont Blanc dog guards do not require any tools for fitment.

The Super Rider+, Rear Trail, Rear Trek and Euromat rear-mounted carriers come with specific set-up and easy fitment settings for every vehicle and are listed in the approved application guides on the F:Drive. A range of universal roof mounted carriers is also available and many models are supplied with locks to secure the carrier to both the roof

ROOF BOXES With an increasing number of families choosing to go on road trips, roof boxes have become a travel essential for most. Mont Blanc’s Cargo range of roof boxes are made from UV-resistant ABS plastic and have a standard safe-locking system that prevents removal of the key unless the box is locked correctly. All boxes come with two webbing internal securing straps and all relevant fixings to secure the box onto roof bars. The stylish, aerodynamic and modern design is aesthetically pleasing as well.

Furthermore, the roof bar and cycle carrier applications are continuously updated to ensure fits, wherever possible, on newly released vehicles.

ASSURANCE OF QUALITY Mont Blanc puts an earnest effort into safeguarding the environment, both in regards to manufacturing products and in the choice of materials used. The pursuit of quality is evident as the brand has been an ISO 14001:2004 company since 2000, along with certification for ISO 9001:2000 and ISO/TS 16949 for the automotive industry. The 3 year guarantee that Mont Blanc offers on its whole range is backed by rigorous tests on its products by independent laboratories as well as in-house testing facilities. Please speak to your local FPS representative to know more about the Mont Blanc range or to gather stockist information.

F:DRIVE MAKES YOUR SEARCH EASIER ROOF BARS Roof bars form the basis of all roof carrying systems, support a wide range of large, bulky loads and are the perfect partner for roof mount cycle carriers and roof boxes. Mont Blanc has a solution for most cars, from the ever popular and straightforward steel Supra bars to the top of the range ReadyFit locking aluminium bars, part of the Easy Go™ ready assembled family, requiring no tools to fit.

EASY GO™ INNOVATIONS Mont Blanc has always focused on the design and development of easy to use products. The ‘Easy Go™’ concept upholds this very idea in their design sensibilities, whereby such products are being developed that do not require any tools or assembly. The comprehensive range developed under this concept offers the end-user great choice, allowing an individual to create a highly practical load carrying system.

Please see the F:Drive for vehicle specific application guides for both passenger car and commercial vehicle roof bars and cycle carriers.

IN SUMMARY • With an increasing number of families choosing touring holidays, the market for travel accessories and load-carrying systems holds great potential for factors and retailers. • Mont Blanc offers a range of more than 450 product references through FPS, including cycle carriers, dog guards, roof boxes, roof bars and general accessories. • Mount Blanc Easy Go™ concept focuses on providing innovative products that are easy to use and assemble. • All products in the Mont Blanc range are rigorously tested against the highest industry standards and are manufactured in compliance with ISO 9001:2000 and ISO/TS 16949. • The whole range is backed by a 3 year warranty. • Marketing & sales material and expert advice are provided in terms of sales support.

STANLEY PUTS COMFORT ON A FIRM FOOTING With work-related fatigue at an all-time high, STANLEY® anti-fatigue utility mats help curb worker stress and increase productivity. VITAL NEWS investigates further. Reports show that companies are losing millions, owing to reduced productivity, increased worker compensation, high insurance rates and absenteeism, all caused by work-related fatigue in people who spend long hours in a standing or stationary position. Fatigue is caused by the impact of the hard floor on the limbs, leading to varicose veins, lower back and leg pain and knee injuries.

In fact, the Stanley® utility mat was judged as more comfortable than four other alternative brands by a majority of participants in focus groups as well as independent tests**. [**Rabin Research Quantitative Study, conducted in 2013]

100% of testers agreed that Stanley® mats:

• relieve pressure on their feet, legs and back • allow them to stand for longer time without fatigue RIGHT MAT FOR RIGHT APPLICATION

The most functional and practical solution for alleviating this is the use of an effective anti-fatigue mat, which works by encouraging subtle movement of the leg and calf muscles. As the muscles contract and relax periodically, they pump blood back to the heart, eliminating blood pooling in the lower extremities and relieving stress.

THE STANLEY® ADVANTAGE The new Stanley® anti-fatigue utility mat has been uniquely designed to provide a combination of cushion and support and is proven to reduce fatigue and provide extra comfort at work.

Key benefits of these mats are:

• Durability: made from 100% tear-resistant polyurethane, so the mat doesn’t lose form or wear through. • Slip-resistance: anti-skid bottom surface for better grip. • Resistance to common fluids and chemicals found in garages, homes and workshops*. • Bevelled edges to help prevent tripping or roll-up. [* against fluids such as motor oil, grease, antifreeze and petrol]

28 WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY

Stanley® offers mats to suit different requirements. The utility mat is available in two different sizes to be used on its own, namely 90 x 150cm and the smaller 60 x 90cm. The diamond texture on the mats helps reduce the pressure buildup on the contact surface of the body, thus providing additional relief to the user.

Section through a Stanley® utility mat

Stanley® also has a knee mat that is designed to offer a smooth surface for mobile tasks such as painting, tiling, auto repair and electrical works. This is available in a 30 x 56cm size.

HELPING MOTOR FACTORS AND RETAILERS While offering a product that has consistently received positive reviews regarding its quality and durability, Stanley® also provides the following support to motor factors and retailers:

• Sales associate education: Stanley® provides training materials and sales tools to drive maximum sales volume. • Merchandising and media support: Stanley® offers consumer-tested packaging to educate customers, encourage trial and move product. The range of Stanley® utility mats is available from FPS on a next-day delivery basis. For more information on Stanley® mats, please log on to the Site Safety & Supplies section of the F:Drive or contact your local FPS representative.

MER AUTO SHINES ON!

Following up on the successful launch of the ‘Auto Shine Technologie’ products two years ago, MER Marketing Manager, Donna Howard speaks to VITAL NEWS about the current automotive valeting market, customer feedback and MER’s German pedigree. VN: So, how was 2014? MER: 2014 was a great year for MER. It’s now two years since the streamlined range of seven quality valeting products was launched. We experienced an overwhelmingly positive response to the range, from both stockists and consumers. We promised technically advanced products that simplified the valeting process, striking packaging that commanded consumer attention and an emphasis on our German heritage. We delivered on all three counts.

VN: What have the stockists liked about the range? MER: Stockists felt the range was easy to understand, making it a simple selling process for their staff. They also liked the way the range stands out on the shelf and the compactness of the display unit, maximising their selling space.

VN: How has this success translated in the market? MER: I think our success can be measured in both sales and consumer response. Our loyal customers stayed with us and we’ve attracted a range of new car care enthusiasts. In 2014 alone, we experienced a 35% increase in sales volume.

VN: Why the emphasis on your German heritage? MER: G erman manufacturers are perceived to produce some of the most technically advanced and highest performing products in the world - some may argue this extends to the best vehicles on the market as well. We wanted to tap into that reputation and remind consumers of our German pedigree. Here at MER, we produce some of the most technically advanced car care products. All our products are still made in Wiehl, Germany, to the demanding TÜV Rheinland® DIN EN ISO 9001: 2008 standards.

VN: Which has been the stand out product? MER: T he introduction of ‘Auto Shine Technologie’ across the whole range has meant every product has performed well, but the

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 38

real star has been Deep Gloss Finishing Wax. We took our original wax back into the lab, added new hybrid waxes and polymer sealant technology and incorporated some slower drying chemicals, all of which give the best results possible in application and buffing. Deep Gloss Finishing Wax is undoubtedly a next generation hybrid wax with a superior gloss finish and protection. It leaves a cross-linked polymer layer on the surface, which is extremely resistant to the elements and provides an exceptional gloss.

VN: And your plans for 2015? MER: We have sent our chemists back into the laboratory to carry out a full 360° research process to make sure we stay at the leading edge of the car care world. Although our products are still some of the most advanced in the market, we don’t believe in being complacent. If there’s a better process or formulation out there, we want to have it in our portfolio. We are also launching a new marketing campaign that really hones in on our German credentials.

VN: As automotive valeting is a competitive sector, what support do you offer stockists to give that edge? MER: A ll stockists can get detailed product guides explaining the formulations behind MER ‘Auto Shine Technologie’, and other POS materials. The MER website (www.merproducts.com) offers top tips, expert advice, how to videos, as well as product information. The MER ‘Auto Shine Technologie’ range is available to the independent automotive aftermarket exclusively through FPS. Factors and retailers can rely on FPS for next-day replenishment of stock with no minimum order quantity or minimum order value. Please contact your local FPS representative to find out how you can become a MER stockist.
