> Find out about the Viper air conditioning range > Meet Electric-Life – supplier of cost effective OE window regulators > and much, much more… * Coming to a TV near you Summer 2013
Note from the MD Dear Customer, Never a dull moment in the aftermarket; already this year we have seen some big changes, with more certain to follow. FPS has achieved modest growth over the last year, but this has come about through lots of small actions right across the business, not rapid or aggressive expansion. In these changing times, we have the luxury of stability and our focus remains simple: range, availability, new to range and a competitive market offering, whilst trying to become more efficient at what we do. These principles underpin our product sourcing and distribution. Our partnership with UFI continues to flourish and their filtration range is now available across all FPS branches. The heavy investment they are putting into range and application development, alongside their OE pedigree (including supplying into F1), gives us great confidence in the future of the UFI brand. We have also added the Viper air conditioning range, from CompressorTech. Our distribution agreement means that this range is available for national sameday and next-day delivery for the first time. More information on pages 4-5. Elsewhere, we continue to invest in new to range to fill range and application gaps. Take, for example, the recent introduction of Corteco parts which fill unique gaps in a number of product areas – you’ll find a complete overview
on pages 20-21. This issue of Vital News also focuses on window regulators, a product with a strong seasonal bias where we have worked hard to improve our offering. We now have the Electric-Life range on board, read about them on page 6. We also have exciting news from the CCA team. FPS has secured the distribution of Michelin’s new range of wiper blades. What a brand to take to market with such strong consumer recognition! The fastest moving parts in the range are available same-day with the balance available next-day. And, as there is no minimum order quantity or value, stock replenishment is quick and easy. Michelin is fully behind this range and is launching a television advertising campaign that will go to air this spring. Find out more on pages 8-9. Following the success of CCA, we have taken the range a logical step further and produced a caravan and camping offering. This range gives our traditional customer base opportunities to diversify into new areas, as well as bringing new customers on board. Ask your local branch for The Great Outdoors catalogue. I hope you all of this interesting and, even more so, relevant to helping you develop your business with our support. Anything we can help you with, do let us know.

The steady growth in air conditioning as a standard vehicle price competitive range. Vital News takes a look at the new
FPS has formed a new partnership with Compressortech, a leading supplier of air conditioning parts and ancillaries, to supply the Viper brand. The Viper range includes a comprehensive range of compressors, as well as a wide range of condensers. Ideally, the air conditioning system should be used all year round and not just in the summer months. Yet in reality, this is rarely the case; systems often go unused throughout the winter months and come spring faults and replacements start to rise exponentially.
evaporator, the refrigerant expands into the evaporator. During evaporation, the liquid turns to gas and heat is absorbed from the surroundings. The evaporator is a heat exchanger similar to the condenser. It has an enormously large surface, over which it can absorb heat from the surroundings for evaporation. This cold air is blown into the vehicle passenger compartment by the ventilation system where it ensures the comfort of the passengers. On the low pressure side the refrigerant is again gaseous, and flows to the compressor where the circuit starts over again.
System overview The air con system is a combination of the car heater and a refrigerant circuit. This allows the desired climatic conditions to be maintained, regardless of the outdoor conditions. Components are connected by hoses, to form a closed system in which the refrigerant circulates. The circuit has two sections: the high-pressure side between the compressor and the expansion valve (red/ yellow), and the low-pressure side between the expansion valve and the compressor (blue). The refrigerant is driven around the system by a compressor. The compression of the refrigerant causes it to become very hot, so the job of the condenser is to cool the refrigerant, causing it to condense and thereby changing its state from a gas to a liquid. Following this, the filter drier separates impurities and air inclusions from the liquid refrigerant. This protects components from damage resulting from contamination and ensures system effectiveness. The refrigerant then passes to the expansion valve, which acts like a dam, maintaining a uniform pressure in front of the dam. Behind the dam, this pressure is relieved due to the increase in volume. Since the expansion valve is located directly in front of the

Air conditioning compressors by Viper – available from FPS
Why do compressors fail? A major cause of compressor failure is lack of lubrication. Lubrication is provided by the oil mixing with the refrigerant and flowing through the system. As refrigerant levels drop the system becomes less and less effective – this can ultimately result in compressor failure from oil starvation. As little as a 25% loss of gas charge can start to damage the compressor and each year, up to 10% of the refrigerant is lost from the system through natural seepage – this figure rises once leaks caused by corrosion from salt acid on the road surface, as well as stone chips in the condenser, are taken into consideration. Another function of the refrigerant is to absorb humidity by trapping moisture in the system’s drier. If the drier becomes saturated condensation forms in the system which can have serious consequences. The excess moisture causes corrosion, increasing wear and mechanical damage to all system components. There is also the possibility that it could freeze, leading to the complete failure of the system. It is therefore important that the drier is replaced at regular intervals, before it reaches saturation point, in order to avoid high repair costs.

feature meant that FPS decided it was time to offer the market a bigger and more offering.
≥
Another cause of compressor failure is excess high pressure. This can be caused by system blockages, which can cause extremely high-pressure to build up very quickly. This puts undue strain on the unit which can cause internal components to break. High-pressure switches help to protect the compressor but may not be enough to avoid some damage. Other causes of high pressure are:
Viper also supplies PAG oils through FPS
• Insufficient condensing of gas • Cooling fin blockage on condenser/radiator • Failure of cooling fans, pressure switch or related wiring • Overcharging the system with refrigerant The necessary repairs can quickly run up a bill of £700! This can be avoided if the air conditioning system is checked once every 2 years.
Remember! The air conditioning system is not only used to cool the air, but also to condition the air in the passenger cabin for a healthy interior climate. It can also be used to demist the interior of the vehicle during the cold and wet season when the air is damp and humid.
Golf V (03-12), part no. CA13809V (compressor) and Ford Focus (04-12), part no. CT35551 (condenser). In addition to compressors and condensers, Viper also supplies PAG oils, R134a air con gas and leak detector dye through FPS, allowing motor factors to provide their garage customers with an air conditioning solution and stay on top of seasonal demand.

Meet Electric-Life Vital News meets Electric-Life, FPS’ new window regulator supplier, to find out about the latest technologies and opportunities for the aftermarket. Nowadays, the majority of car windows are operated electrically. This process is made possible by a number of electric and mechanical components that not only allow the window regulators to lift the glass and keep it level, but they also ensure that the window cannot be forced open.
on the glass that causes the window to stick. This places additional pressure on the motor which can burn out, causing the system to fail.
Types of Technology There are four distinct types of window regulator, each employing a different technology to achieve the same result:
Recent changes In recent years, vehicle manufacturers have focused heavily on the weight reduction of components in order to achieve greater fuel economy and reduce emissions. For window regulators this has meant that new, light-weight materials are being used – metals have been replaced by plastics that are more prone to damage from heat variations and vibrations, causing units to fail more frequently.
• Cable In decline, used mainly in rear doors and industrial vehicles • Bowden The most commonly used technology • Double Bowden Latest and most innovative technology • Scissor Used predominantly in Japanese & Vauxhall applications
In many cases, the principal cause of window regulator failure is due to the failure of the plastic sliders. These sliders are connected to the Bowden cable and slide on the rails, moving the glass up and down. Damage to this plastic part is often caused by the car door being slammed with the window not completely up or down, resulting in the Bowden cable losing its tension, twisting around the cable drum, and jamming the complete mechanism.
The Electric-Life Range For 35 years, Electric-Life has specialised in the development and the production of electric windows regulators and is now one of Europe’s leading manufacturers. All Electric-Life window regulators are manufactured with the experience and technological knowledge acquired through joint development with a number of car manufacturers. Each part is equipped with OE approved gears and assembled with quality components that are submitted to rigorous testing in order to ensure maximum reliability.
Consequently, there is a market shift from complete unit replacement toward the replacement of the mechanism only. This offers many advantages, chief of which are: it prevents the waste of perfectly working motors and reduces installation time. Electric-Life’s range is split 60% complete units and 40% mechanism-only – the latter of which has seen significant year-on-year growth and this is expected to continue. Failures also occur during the winter months, usually as a result of misuse. A common practice used by drivers is to lower their windows in order to clear the glass and improve visibility. However, this can cause problems if there is ice
Not only does Electric-Life lay claim to the widest range of electric window regulators in Europe, it also distributes a range of “mechanism-only” parts which do not include the motor. With this option motor factors can achieve reductions in cost and waste, as well as better profitability. ≥ Types of window regulator technology

How to avoid
Cabin fever
The market for cabin filters is steadily growing as UK consumers start to realise the importance of replacing this key component at the correct service intervals. Vital News finds out more about this growing market. Today, well over 90% of new cars sold in the UK have a cabin filter fitted, and even vehicles without air conditioning are now fitted with cabin filters as standard. In the UK, cabin filter sales increased by 11% in 2012 making it the fastest growing segment in filtration. The Independent Aftermarket is responsible for over 50% of all cabin filter unit sales and there are opportunities for growth as the age of the UK car parc is steadily increasing year on year, offering further replacement cycles to garages. Garages report that many car climate problems and faults reported by motorists are simply down to blocked cabin filters or filters which have exceeded their service life. Much has been done in recent years to educate car owners on the importance of replacing the cabin filter as per the service schedule, and yet, the average cabin filter is between 3-4 years old at the time of replacement instead of the recommended 1 year! Here lies the opportunity – with the correct effective message, cabin filters offer a vital, increasing, core sales and profit opportunity for both distributors and garages.
The Solution In order to assure the highest retention of harmful particles and optimise the operation of the air conditioning system, UFI FILTERS recommends regular replacement of the filter element. UFI’s cabin filters are manufactured with non-woven, synthetic filtering material, or non-woven material combined with activated carbon, according to the specification of each application. On average, UFI filters retain over 90% of containments with a diameter greater than 3 microns (pollen) and from 0.01 to 2 microns (gas, bacteria, fungi), preventing these particles from reaching the cabin and guaranteeing cleaner air inside the car. Furthermore, the activated carbon filters the harmful gases that cause bad smell and, worse, serious respiratory diseases.
The Problem The low filtration efficiency of a clogged, old or low quality filter allows harmful particles, including exhaust gases from other vehicles to get into the passenger compartment. This is known as the ‘tunnel effect’. The concentration of particles can be so intense that the cabin’s occupants can be subject to 6 times more pollutants when they are inside the car!
• Allergy, itchy throat, sneezing while driving • Driver fatigue after a prolonged period • Poor visibility – caused by excessive condensation on the windscreen The exact concentration of dust in the atmosphere and the proportion of harmful particles depends on variable factors such as weather conditions and geographical area. While such factors are variable, it is estimated that there is an average of between 10 and 80 billion suspended particles per cubic metre (m³) of air that we breathe. In spring, and particularly after a rainy winter, this figure increases due to the increase in pollen.

The cabin filter protects against pollutants and micro particles, including dust, soot, flue gas, bacteria, pollen, which trigger allergies and other respiratory diseases. Direct consequences of bad air quality in the cabin include:
UFI cabin filters
UFI nonwoven filter media assure: 1. High efficiency 2. Low pressure drop (high air flow) 3. Elimination of odours 4. High resistance to moisture and fungus To complement UFI’s comprehensive range of cabin filters, FPS also offers a number of references from Reisse. Say no to stre They have cornered the market for tyres and now Michelin has set its sights on the wiper blade market. Vital News finds out more.
Michelin, with its formidable strength in all kinds of rubber technology, has now launched a programme of replacement windscreen wiper blades to the UK market. With over 100 years’ experience in the automotive industry and renowned for their quality tyres, Michelin is a popular brand that motorists know they can rely on. A move into the wiper blade market is therefore a natural progression for this automotive giant.
How big is the market? The UK market for windscreen wiper blades is estimated at around £60 million per year at retail level, with considerable scope for growth. Wiper blades are often replaced only at the final stages of wear, so the inclusion of wiper blade inspection in MOT testing is raising awareness of the dangers of worn wiper blades. A national servicing chain has estimated that at any one time, up to 1 /3 of vehicles on UK roads have defective wiper blades (streakers, squeakers, soakers, and scratchers), while the AA suggests that wiper blades will last 2 years at most, and recommends annual replacement. Throughout the twentieth century, windscreen wiper design remained fundamentally unchanged, with the traditional open frame blade fulfilling most requirements effectively – although the problem of the frame clogging in adverse weather conditions, such as ice and snow, can significantly reduce performance. In more recent times windscreens have become larger and more raked, and the problem of wind-lift in traditional blades has become more pronounced. This triggered the development of flat or ‘beam’ construction blades, offering improved aesthetics, and reduced wind lift. Flat blades, however, with their pre-stressed curvature, are often not as adaptive to the range of wiper arm forces and/or windscreen curvatures, as traditional blades. Furthermore, flat blades can also suffer from the end caps clogging with snow or ice, giving a ‘snowball’ effect. The trend from vehicle manufacturers is now towards a further improvement in wiper blade technology – the hybrid blade. Hybrid blades combine the strengths of traditional blades (effective wraparound on curved windscreens) and flat blades (aerodynamic efficiency, reduced clogging, and aesthetics). Global new vehicle introductions in 2012 indicate that some 33% are now fitted with hybrid blades, and this trend is continuing. In fact, hybrid blades are now the second most popular* choice OE fitment for new car models, pushing conventional blades down into third place.

What does Michelin offer? The Michelin programme consists of two ranges, Stealth and Rainforce, covering the front windscreen applications of approximately 96% of the UK car parc. While predominantly focused on front blades, there is also a small selection of complementary rear wipers in the range. Full details, including application listing and connector details can be found in the new Michelin catalogue. Stealth is a short range of hybrid blades for new and old vehicles alike. The range offers replacement blades for vehicles fitted with hybrid blades as original equipment, such as Lexus LS, Peugeot 4007, Toyota Prius 3 Hatchback and Vauxhall Insignia. Stealth blades can also be used as retro-fit upgrade replacement for vehicles originally fitted with either traditional or flat blades. The range currently covers blades from 16" to 28", with 15" blades due to arrive later in the year. Michelin is really throwing its weight behind these wiper blades. Not only will the Stealth range benefit from consumer press advertising in UK motoring magazines, the Stealth range will also feature in a national TV advertising campaign later this year. Michelin’s Stealth hybrid blade construction is particularly interesting, in that wiper arm pressure, which is distributed across the blade from the centre to the ends by the bridge elements, has been greatly improved. This has been achieved through the following means: • ‘Smart-flex’ sprung steel primary element which better holds down the ends of the blade in contact with the windscreen • A strong riveted flexible joint between the primary and secondary elements offering durability and improved flex • A sliding joint between the secondary and tertiary elements allowing movement of the rubber to maintain contact with the windscreen
vital news issue 30

‘Smart Flex’ Secondary holds wiper ends down on windscreen for superior wipe performance
While hybrid blades are certainly becoming more common as standard fitment on new vehicles, the continuing majority of cars on UK roads are fitted with conventional wiper blades. Michelin’s Rainforce range caters for this section of the car parc. Rainforce blades are all-weather, high performance products. The blade itself is made from compression moulded natural rubber with a liquid graphite coating for smooth clean wiping. Sizes range from 14" to 28".
Quick & Easy Fitment All Michelin wiper blades are attractively presented in individual blister packs, with each pack including all the fittings necessary to fit the blade to the respective application. In this way car parc coverage is maximised, while stock inventory levels are kept to a minimum. The range is supported with application data on all the major electronic platforms, as well as printed application lists. All references are catalogued on MAM, Epicor and FPS’ F:Drive for ease of purchase, so you can have the wiper blade you need at the click of a button.
Extra Support for Stockists The Michelin wiper range therefore offers a massive retail opportunity. Stock packs are available exclusively from FPS, with the following support package available: • Retail merchandising solutions for wall stands • Application guide book • Planograms • Overprint flyers • Same-day replenishment support To find out more about the range, including an overview of the stock pack options, and how you can become a stockist please contact your local FPS Representative.

Pothole Madness! More Pothole Madness Most people look at potholes and see a hole in the road – that is unless you’re looking at one that has been turned into a miniature garden by eccentric Aussie Steve Wheen (aka the Guerilla Gardener).
Wheen’s pothole obsession began life as part of his degree studies and has since grown into an international press phenomenon. Tribute pothole gardens are now springing up everywhere from Bangalore to Toronto.
On his journey home, Paul has two big potholes and two sets of traffic lights to contend with. Can you get him home, passing through each obstacle once and without retracing your steps? You must alternate between the obstacles (i.e. pothole – lights – pothole – lights, or vice versa) It’s not as easy as it may seem at first!
His advice to would-be pothole gardeners: stay off the road! Stay safe and stick to footpaths.

Beware the budget brand! Good quality steel and protective surface coatings are key to creating quality springs. Kilen explains how it produces coil springs that always match or exceed OE quality.
While a coil spring may look insubstantial, it is a safety-critical component responsible for maintaining the correct vehicle ride height and absorbing impacts during travel. Coil springs, constantly exposed to the elements, are subjected to high amounts of stress as they support the weight of the vehicle, isolating it from the road. It is therefore vital that the spring material is of sufficient quality and the spring surface is suitably protected from corrosion, to ensure the spring can withstand years of dynamic use.
Steel
Surface coatings The most common cause of spring failure is corrosion, as chips in the exposed paint layer cannot be avoided. Without additional protection the spring will immediately begin to rust, leading to creep corrosion under the paint which spreads rapidly, greatly reducing spring life expectancy. Kilen springs are powder coated using epoxy resin, applied by electrostatics, to ensure a durable, evenly distributed coating. 8

The quality of the steel wire used to produce coil springs is of the utmost importance. In lower quality steel, found in some ‘budget’ springs on the market, surface and inner defects are not uncommon. These defects reduce the spring fatigue strength, leading to premature sag and increasing the risk of early breakage. Only a few steel mills worldwide are capable of achieving the necessary surface and internal wire quality for modern suspension springs, and Kilen sources only the highest grade specialist spring steel from selected mills.
Even the best quality spring wire requires additional treatment to ensure optimum performance and a long life. Each Kilen spring goes through a multistage heat treatment process to improve fatigue strength and to ensure a tough and ductile spring. Additionally, each Kilen spring is blasted with millions of tiny steel shots in a process called ‘shot peening,’ further improving the fatigue strength of the spring and providing an optimal surface for painting.
SPRING CORROSION IN MILLIMETRES
Coil Springs are deceptively simple: a length of steel formed in to a helix and painted black. This apparent simplicity can give the impression that all springs are created equal. The reality is very different.
IRON PHOSP 1 (Competitor 1)
IRON PHOSP 2 (Competitor 2)
Kilen also provides an additional layer of corrosion protection between the paint and the spring by using the galvanic protection method of zinc phosphating. This provides protection from corrosion even after defects occur in the paint layer, and is significantly more effective at preventing corrosion than other methods, e.g. iron phosphate, sometimes used on cheaper springs. Creep corrosion tests, shown in Diagram 1, demonstrate the variation in corrosion resistance afforded by alternative phosphate methods. Because the labour costs associated with coil spring replacement can often be more than the cost of the spring itself, it is economical to choose quality over price. Always ensure the replacement spring is certified as OE matching quality, which allows fitment without any warranty restrictions. Kilen coil springs include a 3 year manufacturers’ warranty for complete peace of mind. Fit and forget – the Kilen standard! Kilen’s complete range of springs is available for national next-day delivery, with popular references available same-day. Kilen’s complementary range of fast–moving shock absorbers is also available from FPS. To find out more about either range, please contact your local FPS Representative.

Have a brake, have a caliper The number of cars being fitted with brake calipers is growing, and so too is Remy’s range. Vital News finds out what Remy Automotive, one of Europe’s largest brake caliper remanufacturers, has to offer. Remy’s remanufactured brake calipers are as good as the OE equivalent and represent one of the few organically growing replacement parts markets. Many vehicles now have four calipers – one on each wheel – offering fantastic value as a replacement part. However, because they are a safety critical item it is essential that factors and installers select a brand they can be totally confident in.
ensures that Remy provides the highest quality available in the market. Remy is confident that its remanufactured brake calipers are as good as the OE equivalent. Every caliper it supplies comes with an individual test certificate, together with fitting kits where necessary.
One of the main causes of caliper failure is corrosion, which is caused by the water and salt found on our roads during winter. As a result, caliper sales rise during the spring months so it is great news that Remy has just announced the addition of 150 new references to its range. These new additions take its brake caliper range to nearly 3,500 part numbers. New applications cover many popular vehicles, including Audi, BMW, Citroën, Ford, Jaguar, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Toyota, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when fitting the replacement part
≥
Remy offers a 24 month warranty on all of its products from the date of fitment. If a unit is returned as a warranty Remy has Field Engineers available to support its customers. These engineers can also help customers identify the source of system failures. Symptoms can often point to more than one component, and Remy can help customers assess if caliper problems are caused by the failure of the part itself, or if something else on the car is causing the problem. HOW DOES IT WORK?: Gas springs are made up of a chamber tube, piston, piston rod and end fittings. The chamber contains highly pressurised nitrogen gas and as the spring compresses there is less volume in the tube, forcing gas through valves in the piston and thereby increasing the suspension. The spring also contains oil which lubricates the seals, piston and piston rod; it also provides a damping effect when the spring nears full extension. FAILURE: The rubber seals will naturally corrode and crack over time, allowing the gas (and oil) to escape. The corrosion of the seal also allows dirt particles to get inside the spring – the dirt collects on the piston rod and mixes with the gas and oil, causing further damage to the seal. APPLICATIONS: The Kilen range, available from FPS, covers most makes and models of European and Asian vehicles. Additional parts are available from Blue Print to give maximum coverage of the UK car parc. ONLINE SEARCH TIP: When searching for gas springs on the F:Drive, enter the vehicle details and then go to Product Groups > Steering & Suspension > Springs.

Valeo makes the case for motor factors to start selling wiper motors.
As the UK car parc grows and new wiper motor technology comes to market, it makes sense for motor factors to consider the strong commercial opportunities of selling replacement wiper motors. Currently, 70% of wiper motor sales are made via main dealers. Valeo believes its new range of OE wiper motors for the aftermarket presents a significant opportunity for motor factors.
3 Common Technologies The three most common mechanisms are continually rotating, single reversible and dual reversible motors. Continually rotating motors operate a wiper arm in a 360° circular motion, with the reversing action produced by the linkage mechanism. The single reversible motor drives the wiper arm in a clockwise and anti-clockwise arc and the linkage design translates this movement into the sweep of the two wipers.
There is also the issue of heavy loads – such as snow and ice – and drivers attempting to clear their windscreens in icy conditions. Such factors demand a high level of torque that subjects the motor to increased strain, potentially resulting in failure.
Replacement Issues When replacing wiper motors, fitters should check for wear and damage in the wiper linkage if a continually rotating or single reversible system is in use. It is also recommended that the blades are changed at the same time, to guarantee the system is working to optimum standards.
Range Overview
Valeo’s range of 86 OE wiper motors includes 30 front units and 56 rear units, covering marques such as Audi, Citroën, Ford, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Valeo’s extensive wiper motor range Vauxhall and Volkswagen. A further 31 new wiper comprises 86 references motors will be available from Valeo during 2013. Put a New ‘Auto Shine’ on Your Profits Vital News speaks to MER Brand Manager, Donna Howard, to find out about the new range of ‘Auto Shine Technologie’ products.
VN: Are the formulations new? MER: Yes, absolutely. We have spent two years in development, working on our most advanced formulations ever. The introduction of ‘Auto Shine Technologie’ across the entire range delivers MER’s best ever results. For example, consumer feedback revealed that the thickness of our wax made it difficult to apply. Back in the lab we added new hybrid waxes and polymer sealant technology, and we also incorporated slower drying chemicals, all of which give the best results possible in application and buffing. The outcome is a next generation hybrid wax with a superior gloss finish and protection. We have called it Deep Gloss Finishing Wax because it leaves a cross linked polymer layer on the surface which is extremely resistant to the elements and provides an exceptional gloss.
VN: What is ‘Auto Shine Technologie’? MER: ‘The Auto Shine Technologie’ concept highlights our German heritage. Developed by German car polish manufacturer Franz Billich over 45 years ago, MER products are still based on Billich’s original formulations. Everything is still made in Wiehl, Germany, to the demanding TÜV Rheinland® DIN EN ISO 9001: 2008 standards. VN: Why has the range been rebranded? MER: Extensive consumer research showed us that few people knew MER was a German brand. It’s a widely held belief that German manufacturers produce some of the most technically advanced and highest performing cars in the market. The new look packaging helps us to tap into that reputation by reminding consumers of our German pedigree.
≥
VN: So, tell us about the new range. MER: We have launched a streamlined range of seven high quality products that are essential for car owners who really care about their cars. Instead of having multiple ranges within our portfolio we have invested in a technically advanced range which simplifies the purchasing decision for car care consumers and removes the confusion about which products to buy to achieve the perfect finish.
MER supports stockists with a range of point of sale material
Some of the changes to our formulations have been in response to new regulations for the chemical industry. We’ve restricted our portfolio of raw materials in line with REACH regulations and use the most refined raw materials possible to create high specification products that give the best results. For MER Ultimate Shine Polish this has resulted in a product that creates minimal dusting and is easier to apply and buff off.
VN: Car care and valeting is a competitive sector, what support do you offer stockists to give that competitive edge? MER: We have great deals on stock packs*, and all stockists will receive detailed product guides explaining the formulations behind MER ‘Auto Shine Technologie’, branded window stickers and merchandising trays. We have also launched an exciting new website, which is full of information and ‘how to’ videos (VN: go to www.merproducts.com).
We have also removed all aerosols from our range and now only offer spray cleaners. These are kinder to the environment. Our new Wheel Cleaner is a non-acidic formulation. It still achieves the same deep cleaning abilities and great shine but the more gentle formula is kinder to brake discs and other exposed areas.
The range is available to the independent automotive aftermarket exclusively through FPS, so factors and retailers can rely on next-day replenishment of stock with no minimum order quantity or value. To find out how you can become a MER stockist, please contact your local FPS Representative. *Stock packs are available whilst stocks last and are subject to availability.

A-Head of the Pack Federal-Mogul explains how it combines OE insight with decades of working alongside garages to produce market leading sealing solutions. Sealing components have never been more important to the performance and reliability of automotive engines. The quest for reduced CO2 and improved fuel economy has led to increased cylinder pressures, higher internal temperatures and lighter engines, making the science of sealing one of the most complex areas of engine design.
Head Gasket Innovation For head gaskets, this presents two challenges. First, the operating environment is much more aggressive, demanding higher performance materials with high temperature resistance. Second, there is a conflicting requirement for greater sealing flexibility because today’s lightweight materials allow more distortion of the joint between the cylinder block and head. Federal-Mogul’s innovative Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) technology has been solving these issues for 20 years, helping to enable a new generation of engines. To date, over 43 million have been supplied to vehicle manufacturers under Federal-Mogul’s Payen® brand. The same parts are readily available in the aftermarket, and as no special training or equipment is needed to fit them, repair work is quick and straightforward. Federal-Mogul also provides a detailed step-by-step guide to cylinder head gasket replacement and cylinder head bolt renewal and tightening.
used in the cylinder block and head. As well as containing high combustion pressures, this carefully designed sealing element also helps to reduce bore distortion, allowing the piston rings to operate more efficiently. For Federal-Mogul the design process is not simply a case of repackaging OE products in an aftermarket box. “Our experience of working with garages and engine repairers has taught us that, sometimes, it is best to combine our OE discipline with insights from the repair specialists,” said Bert De Haes, Federal-Mogul Product Manager for sealing. “The result is that components are optimised to ensure that they can be fitted quickly, with minimum fuss, and without special tools.”
Cylinder Head Bolts Many engines now use “Torque-to-yield” cylinder head bolts. Stretching the bolts to yield creates a more robust joint that resists extreme temperature cycles and heavy combustion loads without losing the desired clamping force.
Unlike traditional head bolts, these take on a permanent set (yield) when correctly tightened, so many manufacturers specify these bolts as “one-timeMulti-Layer Steel (MLS) technology has use”. Renewal is therefore essential when replacing the enabled a new generation of downsized, cylinder head gasket. Federal-Mogul’s comprehensive highly-boosted engines head gasket replacement kits include all the necessary parts, such as bolts and other gaskets, to enable a professional repair to full In some applications MLS gaskets use profiled beads around the top of each OE standards. cylinder bore and a ‘topographic stopper’ adjacent to it. CLOSING Corteco is helping to fill gaps in FPS’ range, so Vital News Corteco has developed a reputation for supplying the aftermarket with so-called “captive parts”, providing significant profit opportunities to independent factors and repairers. So it should come as no surprise that these specialist parts are now in high demand.
Rotational symmetric main rubber spring with core and intermediate metal ring Fluid chamber Nozzle system with diaphragm
Vibration Control The term Vibration Control may seem unfamiliar at first, but in reality it is a term used to describe the components which reduce noise, vibration and harshness on modern cars. The majority of Corteco products to become available through FPS cover exactly these kind of products, specifically engine mounts, top struts and torsional vibration dampers (TVDs).

Engine Mounts: The Inside Story The recent inclusion of engine mounts as part of the MOT, alongside general uncertainty about the variable quality of replacement parts in the UK aftermarket, means that the demand for Corteco engine mounts is riding high. Increasing numbers of vehicles in the UK car parc are equipped with engine mounts that contain very complex technology. However, not all of the available replacement brands provide the same level of complexity and performance that Corteco’s expertise can provide.
Diaphragm
Diagram 2: ‘Hydro’ Mount
It’s worth remembering that not all engine and gearbox mounts are the same, and that it is what is inside the rubber casing that really counts. Many low cost alternatives contain little more than solid rubber which is completely ineffective and highly inappropriate for the job.
Top Strut Mounts: Inside-Out Top strut mounts should be a key component in any vibration control product portfolio. They play a vital role in integrating the suspension strut and bearing spring with the body of the car. They isolate the dynamic forces of the suspension strut and the spring, thus avoiding the transfer of vibration to the vehicle body.
‘Hydraulic’ and ‘Switchable’ engine mounts are prime examples of the kind of high technology component that garages have sourced directly from dealerships for years. From the outside engine mounts can look the same, but appearances are deceptive. Inside, it is a very different story. Let us take a closer look at the ‘Switchable’ engine mount (Diagram 1). Absorption rates are a key factor. These are designed to reduce the idle speed stutter that is associated with diesel engines. With a lower spring rate in the main rubber spring, the absorption properties are specifically adjusted to match conditions experienced at idle speeds and with higher RPM operations by altering the vacuum supplied. This inside story of high technology is repeated throughout the range to include products such as Electrically Switchable Hydro Mounts.

Diagram 3: Top strut mount cross-section
Note the complex interior, shown in Diagram 3. Top struts are safety critical items which is why it is important to source from a top quality brand, such as Corteco. Any damage to the suspension strut or strut mount can have a detrimental impact on road safety; braking distances are extended, contact with the road is reduced, while steering and cornering ability rapidly deteriorates.
Torsional Vibration Dampers Drive system technology has developed significantly over the last ten years and in order to combat vibrations, vehicle manufacturers are now employing TVDs – or “decoupling pulleys” as they are also known. Without a TVD, at certain speeds these vibrations could damage the crankshaft. The TVD reduces vibrations transmitted from the crankshaft to

TVDs are not a universal fit. In fact, Corteco ensures that each one is matched to and balanced for each individual model, and this is reflected in the rate of wear of each part. It is also worth noting that not all TVDs are the same and that once again, it is what is inside that matters. For example, a TVD without the correct rubber element would have no damping effect and the consequences could be disastrous for the engine. Correct installation is vital and Corteco pulleys are supplied as “installer friendly”, complete with mounting instructions that include detailed information and images for each application. Essential details such as required tightening torques, tensioning screws and the use of special tools are included. Although some TVD bolts may be common to a number of different vehicle models, TVD bolts in general are not a universal fit. The bolts are designed to ‘stretch’, which means that used bolts must never be re-fitted. Corteco is helping to make this clear with the inclusion of bolts and TVDs in the form of TVD kits. These kits are expected to be available in the aftermarket in the second quarter of 2013, with unique references expected to be available through FPS once landed. Worn TVDs can adversely affect other components in the drive. Installers are advised to fit a new belt whenever the TVD is replaced. Careful inspection of other auxiliary components should also be made at this time, as their performance may well have been compromised.
