Inside this issue…
Note from the MD Dear Customer,
Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News, keeping you up-to-date with what is going on in the market and at FPS. Second quarter figures showed that the UK economy grew at an estimated 0.6%, with output growing across key sectors including construction, manufacturing, services and agriculture. Even the trade gap has narrowed slightly as exports have increased. It seems like we are heading into a gentle recovery, let’s hope it continues. At FPS, sales are also ahead as a result of our focus on core ranges as well as new product introductions – many have been covered in previous editions of Vital News – all of which brings you the opportunity to grow your sales. It is pleasing to add to this the launch of the new QRS range of overrunning alternator pulleys (OAPs and OADs) manufactured to OEM specifications, which are being included to the FPS portfolio in November. OAPs have become an important part of the engine, reducing the load on the belt drive and increasing the belt life. Meanwhile, the Fahren braking range has been further strengthened to include 39 shoes references. This range of shoes covers over 1,600 applications and is available same-day from the branches. This is a very competitively priced brand which doesn’t compromise on the quality or build of the products. These new introductions, alongside the pad range, will help you to provide your customers with a braking solution to suit their requirements, ultimately helping to grow your sales. We expect this programme to be in demand.

Blue Print Power Steering Reservoir
During August, over 1,500 new references, including 307 from Fahren and Boge, have been added to range.
Improved Blue Print Electronic Shifter Module FPS introduces the new Blue Print electronic shifter module (ADA107221) which has been re-engineered with improved component positioning and distribution to help prevent failure in the future. Blue Print’s solution allows you to simply replace the failed circuit board instead of replacing the entire housing, which results in a more cost effective repair. The entire housing from Jeep is reported to cost almost £520!*. Applications include the Jeep Commander, all models (05-06) and Jeep Grand Cherokee, all models (04-07).
The power steering fluid reservoir fitted to the Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager 3.3i is equipped with a small filter within its base. When this filter becomes contaminated and partially blocked, the power steering fluid flow becomes restricted between the reservoir and the pump. This usually results in an abnormal whine from the power steering pump, which is worse from a cold start-up and at slow manoeuvring speeds. The Blue Print power steering reservoir (ADA109551) is a direct replacement for the original item and a straightforward job to complete. It is strongly advised that as much fluid as possible is drained from the power steering system (including oil cooler, if fitted) and replaced with new fluid of the correct specification. Chrysler recommends power steering fluid that meets MOPAR MS-5931 specification. For further information visit the F:Drive.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION 3
Winter’s on its way! Vital News gets ahead of the cold weather by investigating ways to prepare for the coming winter and help you to maximise on sales opportunities.
Cold weather presents fantastic sales opportunities for motor factors. With extra demand for those winter essentials guaranteed, FPS has stocked up on many key, seasonal items based on sales history trends and customer demand. So don’t worry, there’s no need to be caught short this winter; you can rely on FPS for same-day and next-day delivery on many winter staples.
winter’s impact on glow plugs The glow plug is an integral part of the engine management system which ensures optimal engine starting. During cold weather, more energy is required to help the ignition to start, as both the intake air and engine itself are colder, putting extra pressure on the glow plugs to perform. High quality glow plugs are therefore important this winter. NGK’s OE glow plugs enable engines to start quickly and smoothly and have a guaranteed long service life.
Blue Print’s range of glow plugs includes ADG05511 – Glow Plug Reamer – which fits over 350 applications and should be used on every glow plug change to remove built up carbon, which causes premature glow plug failure.
Glow Plug Reamer
Keep up and running this winter with Remy starter motors and alternators! As winter kicks in and temperatures begin to drop, condensation can start to become a problem. This can affect the cranking system by reducing the vehicle’s starting ability and making starters work harder, putting strain on the battery. Additionally, lights, windscreen washers, wipers, heated screens, heaters and blowers, all take their toll on the alternator’s reserves, leaving less power for the battery. Furthermore, wet road surfaces and, on occasions, salty conditions, fast-track corrosion resulting in loose or broken starting and charging system connections. The car’s electrical system has been designed to accommodate all of the demands above but any weaknesses within the starting or charging system, such as a weak battery, poor electrical connections or reduced alternator output, will become apparent during winter conditions and cause starting or even charging problems. This is why FPS has stocked up on rotating electrics, meaning you will be able to meet your customers’ winter distress requirements with ease.
Importance of keeping your batteries charged
As trusted suppliers, NGK and Blue Print recommend changing all glow plugs at the same time, as when one has failed it is likely that the remaining plugs will fail soon after. Replacing the entire vehicle set will also ensure that current emission legislations are complied with.
Battery related faults remain in the top 5 reasons for vehicle breakdowns. Over 200,000 car batteries are replaced at the roadside each year. Low winter temperatures have a dramatic effect on vehicle batteries, reducing performance by up to 60%. When a battery is already in a low state of health, the likelihood is that the car will not start.
Specialising in Asian and American applications, the Blue Print range comprises over 140 part numbers, covering more than 1,300 applications. Blue Print glow plugs, are covered by a 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty.
Usually, the most common reason for battery failure is low specification or budget batteries. It is not advised to fit a battery with low CCA (Cold Cranking Amperes) when the vehicle needs more amps to function correctly, especially in colder climates. Choosing a battery with a higher CCA is better because it ensures that the vehicle’s engine will start even on icy mornings. GS batteries guarantee a long service life due to the high rating of CCA.
Always replace all glow plugs at the same time
4 WINTER SALES OPPORTUNITIES
vital news issue 32
Another important decision factor with batteries is warranty. A long warranty is a sign of a good battery, so it’s worth considering the GS automotive batteries which come with an up to 4 year warranty.
Lighting the way The Lucas range of lighting offers a competitively priced, quality programme to meet factors’ demands. Through continuous range development Lucas brings the latest technologies to the aftermarket, including adaptive front lighting systems, high intensity discharge headlamps, LED and daylight running systems. This enables Lucas to cover approximately 90% of the UK vehicle parc. It is also complemented by a range of OE lighting units from Hella, Magneti and Valeo.
Ignition Coils & Lead Sets During the coming winter months, water ingress from salt treated roads contributes to the deterioration of ignition coils and lead sets. These conditions increase the stress on these parts and consequently failure rates rise, leading to greater demand and sales opportunities. FPS has a two tiered solution to suit your customers’ needs: OE matching quality ignition coils and leads from Cambiare with a 2 year/30,000 miles warranty and a competitively priced Fahren ignition coil range with 1 year/12,000 miles warranty. For more information about ignition coils go to page 7.
of a battery charger and starter device in robust casing, ideal for any busy garage. Following on from previous years’ jump lead and jump starter sales, FPS has recognised that this is an opportunity not to be missed and has invested in stock to help you maximise these sales opportunities.
Get a grip on the winter weather Michelin snow chains, compatible with ABS and ESP systems, have a lightweight structure with steel clips, ideal for short term use at low speeds. They are quick and easy to install and remove, making them ideal for an unpredictable winter. New to FPS is Prestone Universal Antifreeze/Coolant which can be used in all cars. It prevents freezeups to -37 degrees Celsius and overheating up to +129 degrees Celsius, making this a great seasonal essential. Whatever your needs are this coming winter, make FPS your port of call for all winter essentials. FPS has invested heavily in stock to make sure factors will not be without many winter must-haves, including car covers, snow socks, screen wash, antifreeze, ice melt, de-icer, squeegees, scrapers, hats and gloves, de-humidifiers, headlamp upgrade bulbs, radiator sealers, hydrometers and more. Please see the F:Drive for further details or, alternatively, speak to your local FPS Representative.
Be prepared with Gates Thermostats Most thermostat failures are detected between the colder months of September and March, as drivers become aware of a thermostat problem when their cabin heater fails. Around 1 million thermostats fail each year; a figure that is set to increase annually. This provides a significant sales opportunity for factors and their garages. Gates thermostats contain multiple seals and gaskets meaning fewer part numbers provide the widest application coverage in the market. All 500 references are readily available through FPS for same-day and next-day delivery.
Seasonal essentials Key winter essentials, such as battery chargers and related equipment, can help factors and their customers release income from little investment. FPS has an extensive range of chargers available. The Maypole starter charger is the garages’ first choice – a combination

Get geared up for winter Vital News talks to Portwest to gain an overview of winter work wear and sales opportunities for factors.
The UK has a growing market for protective work wear driven by legislation and the extreme weather conditions that we have been seeing over recent years. This is a great sales opportunity for factors. Winter is coming, bringing cold temperatures and shorter days. Your customers will want winter work wear suitable for the change in weather conditions. Portwest has been designing and manufacturing protective work wear, safety footwear, gloves and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) since 1904.
stipulates the high visibility standards. All Portwest weather proof jackets adhere to EN343 (this standard defines waterproofness and breathability of clothing). This is achieved through the use of high quality but lightweight fabrics, which keep heat in and water out, as used in the Arbroath breathable jacket range.
UK’s growing protective work wear market The UK is the largest market for work wear in the European Union. UK businesses spend millions of pounds each year and the protective clothing market is still developing. Work wear such as high visibility clothing is in demand. Due to the legal requirements to wear PPE and protective work wear, there are extensive sales opportunities for factors. There is also a demand for work wear that is fashionable, constructed using new materials which also contributes to comfort and safety. Portwest has designed its products to satisfy all these demands.
There are extensive sales opportunities for factors due to the legal requirement to provide PPE
The 1992 personal protective equipment at work regulation requires many aspects to be considered to ensure that the correct clothing is chosen for a particular task. Therefore the choice of protective clothing should take into account adverse weather climates and darker conditions. Employers must assess and review the provision and suitability of PPE. If PPE is required, employers must provide their staff with suitable PPE free of charge to ensure their safety is maintained at all times.
The Portwest range Portwest has a range of clothing to suit all work wear and PPE needs such as: safety gloves, protective footwear, eye and ear protection, as well as high visibility clothing that complies with EN471 which

the choice is yours Vital News takes a look at the ignition coil market and how factors can benefit from FPS’ offering not only in winter, but throughout the year as well. Market drivers for ignition coils There are a few drivers that are changing the ignition coil market and therefore creating new customer demands. These drivers include the economy and the aging UK car parc. In 2011, the average vehicle age increased to 7.44 years compared to 7.25 years in 2010. At first glance, that may not seem high. When looking into the actual car parc, however, there exist fewer vehicles aged between 4 to 9 years, while the number of cars on the road over 9 years old is rising. Generally there are less people buying new vehicles and as a result the average age of the UK car parc is increasing. Vehicle owners with a car older than 9 years have different requirements towards the cost of servicing in relation to the residual value of the car compared to people with newer vehicles.
For the majority of customers, the Cambiare proposition will be a good choice of OE matching quality ignition coils and modules, containing over 440 part numbers. The range includes coil packs, dry ignition coils, pencil coils, plug top coils, rail coils and oil-filled coils. The entire range comes with a 2 year or 30,000 mile warranty to give customers the confidence to fit and forget.
Taking these factors and the economic situation into account, where some people have less disposable income, there is a calling for more competitively priced aftermarket solutions.
FPS is here to give you a choice Having built a reputation for offering quality products, FPS has also recognised the need to provide factors with more choice. Consequently, FPS has introduced tiered offerings across many product areas to provide factors with a solution to suit their customers’ varying needs. Following this commitment, a new range of ignition coils from Fahren has been introduced. This competitively priced range sits alongside the current OE matching quality offering from Cambiare, providing motor factors with more choice. For customers faced with price constraints, who are still concerned with quality and reliability, the Fahren ignition coil range offers quality for less and comes with a 1 year or 12,000 mile* warranty. The range includes 19 references, covering over 1,200 vehicles.
Cambiare ignition coils are a good choice for OE matching quality, over 440 part numbers and a 2 year or 30,000 mile warranty
Ignition coil sales increase in winter With both offerings available factors can rely on FPS to have suitable coils for their requirements, especially with increased winter demands forecasted. During the cold and icy conditions, water ingress from salt treated roads contributes to the deterioration of coils. Winter weather conditions increase the amount of stress placed on coils which can result in higher failure rates. Consequently FPS predicts an increase in demand by up to 50% for ignition coils. With the Cambiare ignition coil coverage having increased by 30% during 2013, this will help you to maximise your sales opportunities with existing products. Please turn to page 13 to see how Cambiare improvements during 2013 can help you.

IGNITION COILS 7
QRS: your number one alternative Vital News learns about the replacement overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) market.
The OAP market has grown considerably in recent years due to an increase in diesel and high performance petrol engines. Added to this, the loads being placed on the accessory belt drive system are constantly increasing, with modern alternators being required to power more and more vehicle electronics. This is an example of a product group that represents a fantastic sales opportunity for factors. To satisfy demand, FPS has launched a new range of OAPs and OADs from QRS, comprising a total of over 50 references.
Types of clutch pulley
The overrunning alternator pulley is designed to decouple the alternator rotor from the deceleration forces and allow it to overrun, thus alleviating much of the stress on the belt. As a result, these pulleys can reduce noise, vibration and harshness when coming to a standstill, increasing the life of the belt and related components. Other benefits of the OAP include a reduction in belt vibration, noise, load and tensioner movement and an increase in system life.
Overrunning Alternator Decoupling Pulleys (OADs)
There are two main types of clutch pulley, the conventional overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) and the newer overrunning alternator decoupling pulley (OAD). QRS clutch pulleys are engineered to OEM specifications and feature a design which includes a grooved inner ring, radial support bearing, seals and outer ring with moulded face.
OADs are increasingly used in newer vehicles and feature an internal one-way clutch that incorporates a torsion spring to absorb the base engine vibrations reaching the alternator’s rotor, whilst also performing the same basic function as the OAP.
What’s the difference between an OAD and OAP? The OAD’s torsion spring allows for even greater noise, vibration and harshness absorption for vehicles with higher torque, although both types of pulley will allow the alternator to ‘free wheel’ when necessary. By including a torsion spring, vehicle manufacturers are also able to increase engine efficiencies and fuel economy.
QRS for quality Each QRS clutch pulley is designed to meet or exceed the very latest OEM specifications. The pulleys undergo a rigorous testing procedure including the following:
• Durability test at high temperatures and speeds • Endurance reliability test of more than 160,000 cycles • Durability test at variable speeds and variable frequencies The pulleys are zinc-nickel plated to stop corrosion and are supplied in sealed bags within the box with a protective cap, where required, to prevent water and dirt contamination. The QRS range includes 52 references covering over 650 applications
Overrunning Alternator Pulleys (OAPs) OAPs have a one-way clutch inside the pulley, allowing the alternator’s rotor to coast to a stop position when the engine is shut down, eliminating the possibility of slipping.
8 overrunning alternator pulleys
QRS OAPs and OADs will be available from November. For further information visit the QRS website on www.qrsauto.co.uk and for technical support, please call the QRS Technical Hotline on 0844 980 0089* or email technical@qrsauto.co.uk *Available Monday-Thursday, 8.30am-5pm, and Friday 8.30-4pm. Braking into the Market Fahren tells VITAL NEWS about its new range of brake friction. Having recognised a growing need in the market for a quality range of fast moving, low cost braking products, Fahren has produced a new range that ticks all of these boxes. The range consists of 212 fast moving brake pads, covering over 5,000 applications, and 39 shoe references covering over 1,600 applications. Shoe application highlights include: the Ford Focus 1.6 (98-05), Ford Transit 330 2.4 (00-09) and Vauxhall Astra 1.6 (95-11). Brake pads are available for many popular vehicles such as the Renault Clio 1.2 (05>), Vaxhall Astra 1.6 (98-05), Ford Focus 1.6 (98-04) and Ford Mondeo 2.0 (00-07), to name a few.
More about the Fahren range Fahren focuses on fast moving parts that are available on a sameday and next-day basis through FPS. An on-going programme of range profiling ensures that the offering remains up-to-date. As sales decline on specific references, they will be replaced by up-and-coming ones, making sure you always have access to the most popular parts in the market. This enables you to respond to your customers’ needs faster and generate profit more quickly, by having high stock turnover on key products.
Safety comes first Brake pads and shoes are safety critical parts, so while you may search the market for competitive pricing, you cannot afford to compromise on product quality. While Fahren represents a competitive option, it also maintains the highest quality and build. All pads and shoes are subject to rigorous tests and quality checks throughout the production process to ensure high levels of performance.
The friction material used in Fahren brake pads is developed specifically for each application. Fahren pads are produced with an under-layer that dampens vibrations to prevent noise. It also prevents the transfer of heat from the pad to the brake fluid. This special material has a high bonding strength that sticks the friction material to the back plate. All Fahren pads and shoes are free from asbestos, lead and Cr6+. As well as setting the standards for product quality and performance, R90 also covers the packaging of replacement braking parts. All Fahren braking products are in clearly labelled, tamper-proof packaging. The labelling shows part numbers, relevant applications details and the axle location. Furthermore, the labelling on Fahren brake pads doubles as a cross-reference tool, listing the cross-references for 5 of the main braking brands, giving you the confidence that the right part has been selected.
Product Support
Fahren brake pads conform to R90 regulations
All parts are manufactured according to ECE Regulation 90 (R90) which sets the standard for replacement braking products fitted to all cars first registered from April 2001. R90 testing ensures that front and rear braking performance matches OE specifications, reducing the possibility of importers sourcing low quality alternatives from outside of Europe.

Train to Gain with Gates With training workshops in full swing Vital News talks to Gates about the value of getting involved. Gates’ Accessory Belt Drive System (ABDS) kit sales have more than tripled over the last year. Having added 300 references to its kit range in the first quarter of 2013, making over 500 references available, Gates has established itself as one of the leading suppliers of ABDS kits.
Factor case study A factor was keen to reduce ABDS issues and increase product awareness at garage level. Gates held a two hour training session on site that focused on:
• Function and purpose of the modern ABDS • The need to develop the Micro-V® Horizon™ belt • Overrunning Alternator Pulleys (OAP) • Torsional Vibration Damper Pulleys (TVD) • Implications for power steering in the event of premature ABDS failure • Diagnosing problems and belt wear Based on the feedback from the session, it was apparent that installers tend to rely on their personal experience when servicing the ABDS. But the design of the ABDS has become more complex in order to cope with more vehicle electronics. Nowadays alternators are required to output anywhere between 120 and 160 Amps compared to between 30 and 50 Amps on older systems. This increase in demand from components puts more strain on the performance of the belt. This suggests that there is a need for factors and garages to increase their knowledge of the ABDS to keep up with improving technologies.
Micro-V® kit sales have increased in the last 12 months thanks to the Micro-V® kit range extension
ABDS kits offer motor factors significant opportunities to build revenue streams. Benefits include:
• Guaranteed OE quality • Easier ordering – all components in one box • Save time by doing the job right first time • Increased reliability and service life of the ABDS • Simplified warranty claims in case of failure New ABDS training Following a successful series of technical workshops on timing belts, Gates has added an ABDS option. At a local event organised by factors, Gates’ Technical Training and Support Team has been discussing implications for installers of ABDS systems. Change for the better Having undergone a number of recent improvements, VITAL NEWS talks to Cambiare to find out how this has helped develop its market offering. Not wanting to settle for anything less, Cambiare improved its existing range, catalogue, product quality, warranty process and website, to give factors increased range coverage, more confidence in the products and improved support.
Warranty turnaround time Cambiare has introduced a new warranty process which is helping to reduce the throughput time on warranty claims. Since implementing the new process, the turnaround time for claims has been reduced from an average of 28 days to just 15 days.
Catalogue improvements In response to customer feedback, changes to the cataloguing system have been implemented. The Cataloguing team has developed the current application tables to provide customers with the most accurate information and best possible application coverage. The team has also worked through OE databases to cross check this coverage, as well as the accuracy of the catalogue. During the past quarter alone, the application coverage of the ignition coil range grew by 30%, ABS sensors by 9%, air mass sensors by 9%, lambda sensors by 14% and switches & sensors by 32%. Enhanced technical notes have been added across all product ranges, giving you more information at your fingertips when searching for that all important application.
Enhanced Website Cambiare has launched a brand new website designed to support garages and motor factors. The online catalogue has been redesigned to make it easier and quicker to locate applications. The following can be used as search criteria:
• Cambiare part number • Engine code **New** • Vehicle details The Cambiare website has an exclusive login area for all stockists, enabling access to vital information, including:
• OE cross referencing • Downloadable imagery • Technical documentation • Marketing material The new ‘locate stockist’ function is a great tool to help generate further business for Cambiare stockists by pointing garages in their direction.

Assured Product Quality Product quality is key, especially when it comes to engine management products; Cambiare therefore ensures that all products are tested in the factories. Air mass sensors are notoriously unreliable and as a consequence they have one of the highest return rates of any engine management product, be that through part failure or misdiagnosis. Cambiare tests all air mass sensors prior to dispatch, in addition to the factory tests, so customers can be confident in the quality and reliability of the Cambiare product. This translates into real, practical benefits, primarily a reduction in return rates and fewer warranty claims. Only units which meet Cambiares’ strict performance criteria pass and receive a ‘QC Passed’ stamp as a sign of approval. In addition to factory tests, EGR valves, ignition coils and fuel pumps are also subjected to testing prior to shipment to give customers more confidence in the product quality.
Range Developments
The ‘QC Passed’ stamp is proof of the quality and performance of all Cambiare products
Cambiare has also further extended its product offering by recently adding just under 1,000 new part numbers including fuel pumps, EGR, solenoid and idle control valves, relays, throttle bodies and fuel injectors which are all available for same-day and next-day delivery. To find out how you can benefit from the recent enhancements or to suggest further improvements, speak to your local Cambiare or FPS Representative.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR HYB It is now over 15 years since the launch of the first mass production full hybrid vehicle. Toyota launched the Prius in Japan during 1997 and rolled it out worldwide in 2000. This has since been followed by the Auris, as well as a number of hybrid models from rival manufacturers ranging from Honda to Porsche. The current generation of full hybrid vehicles has one major drawback – namely the cost and efficiency of the battery packs. No battery lasts forever, not even rechargeable batteries. Over time, the acid in the battery stratifies, meaning it loses its ability to hold its charge. This issue has led many critics to dismiss these hybrid systems as a ‘stepping-stone’ rather than the future of personal transport. So what’s next for the hybrid?
AIR POWER PSA Group thinks it has the answer in the form of its 2008 Hybrid Air concept, which dispenses with the expensive lithium-ion battery packs of the current crop of hybrids. Some critics have lauded it as a car that will run on fresh air while others have panned it as pie in the sky. While certainly innovative, Hybrid Air is a combination of tried and tested technologies – a petrol-powered internal combustion engine, a hydraulic motor and pump, compressed air storage tanks and an automatic transmission. The prototype is similar in design to PeugeotCitroën’s existing hatchback models. The biggest difference you will see when examining the chassis, is the four-foot long, blue tank running down the centre, affectionately referred to by the design engineers as the ‘scuba tank’. The tank holds around 20 litres of compressed nitrogen and some hydraulic fluid. During acceleration, compressed air is released, forcing fluid through the hydraulic pump and into the motor to drive the wheels. The system uses energy from the vehicles’ regenerative braking system to operate the motor and the pump. Every time the vehicle brakes or decelerates, a reversible hydraulic pump compresses the nitrogen and releases it when the vehicle next accelerates in air or hybrid power mode.
A look inside Peugeot-Citroën’s innovative Hybrid Air system. The distinctive blue ‘scuba tank’ – containing compressed nitrogen and hydraulic fluid – is clearly visible in this view
The air-powered mode is intended for stop-start driving in urban areas and will run from a standing start up to 43mph. Depending on traffic, this mode will be active between 60 and 80% of urban driving time, making a big contribution to fuel efficiency and increasing MPG figures considerably. PSA is currently citing a fuel economy of around 81 miles per gallon2. In hybrid mode the air powered motor will boost power and torque during acceleration. As well as being cheaper to run than its rival hybrids, the Hybrid Air should also be cheaper to buy thanks to the absence of any advanced battery technology. PSA also claims that its take on hybrid will be less expensive to service than traditional hybrids like the Prius, thanks to the simplicity of its components. In reality, the design is still in its conceptual stage and design engineers concede that more work is needed on the hydraulic and braking systems. Only time will tell if the Hybrid Air concept is a road-worthy reality but the French car manufacturer certainly thinks so and plans to have it on the road by 2016.
KERS So, exactly how much power does the air-fuelled motor produce? Well, at present, not much. Early prototypes were named Kiwi One and Kiwi Two as the energy stored within the air tanks was equivalent to the amount of energy that you would find inside a kiwi1.
Kinetic energy recovery systems, or KERS, are nothing new either. They have been around for years in the world of motorsport, but there has always been a question mark over whether or not the technology could be made relevant to road cars.

14 HYBRID TECHNOLOGY
vital news issue 32
HYBRID? With its racing history, you might expect KERS to make its road debut in a Ferrari or Mercedes, yet it looks like Volvo could be the first to put the technology into a mass produced car. In fact, the Swedish marque has already fitted this system on the rear axle of an S60.
COMPONENT DETAILS
Flywheel module 60,000 rpm max
CVT module Continuously variable transmission
Output gear train Gearings, start clutch
It takes just a few seconds to charge and discharge these clever storage devices. What’s more, they can withstand many hundreds of thousands of charging cycles. All of this makes them the perfect technology for the kind of energy-capture applications that exploit brief charging, such as regenerative braking. This type of energy storage is commonly used in hybrid buses and trams all over the world where it is used to assist acceleration and to power accessories like air conditioning, automatic windows and passenger doors. And now, Toyota has employed this same technology in its racing fleet. The company claims that the rapid burst of power from its supercapacitor energy storage system helped propel them to victory several times in the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship series.
Rear driveshaft Output torque to rear wheels Hydraulic manifold Assy
The component parts of Volvo’s flywheel KERS hardware
Put simply, Volvo’s KERS captures energy lost through braking and stores it in a carbon fibre flywheel that is attached to the rear axle. The front wheels are driven by the internal combustion engine while the rear wheels are driven by the KERS. Under braking, the S60’s four-cylinder engine is shut off and the flywheel gathers rotational energy, spinning at up to 60,000 RPM. This energy is then used to accelerate the vehicle when it is time to move once again. It can also be used to power the vehicle once it reaches cruising speed. The flywheel’s rotation is transferred to the rear wheels via a specially designed transmission. Like the KERS systems used in Formula 1, Volvo’s KERS provides up to 80 bhp 3. As with other hybrid systems the greatest fuel saving is achieved in urban environments, where driving is predominantly stop-start over short distances.
SUPERCAPACITORS A supercapacitor 4 (or supercap for short) is a power-storage device that stores energy by loading an electrical charge onto two electrodes. The larger and closer these electrodes are, the more energy they can store.
Toyota’s 2012 FIA endurance racer features a supercapacitor energy storage system
Toyota doesn’t expect to replace the Prius with a new supercap system anytime soon. But sources from the company’s racing division do believe that there are real world applications for the technology and that it has potential as a complementary system, providing power to accelerate from a stop, or providing bursts of power during acceleration. The market has shown acceptance to hybrid engines, so there should be a steady flow of car manufacturers changing to hybrid engines in a wider range of vehicles. GS Batteries and Remy are already at the forefront of the technology by supplying AGM batteries and rotating electrics that are used for the current stop-start technologies. So watch this space for new technology advances that could develop in the aftermarket in the future!

Well-Oiled Machine
Castrol talks to Vital News about the importance of having a well lubricated engine Oil is one of the most important ‘parts’ of an engine. It reduces friction and wear, helps manage engine heat and protects against the effects of high temperatures and damaging contaminants. However, in the UK and across European countries there is a trend towards downsized engines. These modern engines are placing greater demand on lubricants since they operate at higher pressures and temperatures, resulting in increased friction and a requirement to keep the engine lubricated.
in the engine and dispersants assist by stopping sludge build-up. The manufacturing process allows fully-synthetic oils to be specifically designed to provide consistent, superior performance.
so long 10W-40. Say hello to low viscosity oils Low viscosity oils have become standard for modern engines in recent years – 5W-30 and 0W-20 are currently among the most popular for new cars. The viscosity is an indicator of the basic differences between oil formulations – the lower the first number (5W), the thinner the oil will be when cold and the better the oil will flow around an engine. The greater the second number (30), the thicker the oil will be at higher temperatures in order to protect critical engine parts. Manufacturers are moving away from 10W-40, instead recommending lower viscosities, such as 5W-30 and 0W-30. According to car manufacturers, the majority (55%) of the current UK car parc requires either 5W-30 (36%) or 5W-40 (19%). Only 24% of cars require 10W-40 oil.*
Why use fully-synthetic oils? Oil suppliers addressed the importance of keeping downsized engines lubricated by developing fully-synthetic oils. These oils help the engine deliver fuel efficiency with optimum levels of protection and performance – many engines now use this type of oil to provide proper lubrication. Fully-synthetic oils do not have the impurities found in mineral oils, which can cause the oil to break down at higher temperatures and can create a build-up of sludge in the engine. Mineral oils degrade more quickly than synthetic oils, making them unable to cope with extended drain intervals.
Right oil, right car
Cam cover with mineral oil after 12,000 miles
Cam cover after 12,000 miles with fully-synthetic oil
Fully-synthetic oils provide protection to the engine across a far wider range of temperatures, up to the engine’s maximum temperature and beyond. The lower viscosity helps to improve fuel efficiency (saving customers’ money when fuel prices are generally increasing) whilst offering greater protection. Additives in the oil, such as detergents, stop deposits forming
It is important that workshops use the right oil for the right car. Oils that have gone through manufacturer’s testing processes and are marked as ‘approved’ will ensure the manufacturer’s warranty remains intact. Many car manufacturers have their own oil specifications, and it is therefore important that workshops use the oils that meet manufacturers’ approval. Results from a YouGov survey commissioned by Castrol in 2011 found that 60% of UK drivers visiting a workshop consider their car manufacturer’s recommendation as one of their first criteria when it comes to selecting a brand of oil. While other brands say they meet specifications or they are merely ‘suitable for use’, Castrol ensures that all of its oils are fully ‘approved’ by car manufacturers. This enables Castrol to be amongst the most recommended oils on the market. Castrol covers most car manufacturers’ engines, and is available nextday through FPS. * Source: Automotive Parts & Care, GFK Retail & Technology Ltd & DVLA, October 2012
