3 FOR YOUR INFORMATION Vital product news

DEAR CUSTOMER, Let me start by wishing you all a Happy New Year! It seems unlikely but the annual GDP of the UK grew by more than 2.5% in 2014. Since the recession, new car sales have recovered in recent years, with 2014 back at levels last seen in 2005. This is now feeding back into the aftermarket, with vehicles in the 4-6 year age segment growing for the first time in 5 years. The overall vehicle parc has also grown every year since 2009, with an extra million vehicles on the road in the last 5 years. If the economy stays firm over the coming months, then hopefully this trend will continue. Despite many changes in vehicle technology being in the news, and with developments such as self-drive vehicles being trialed, the core aftermarket products are going to be similar to as they are now for at least the next decade, albeit with technological developments playing an increasing role. In keeping with the changing times and the ever-evolving market, we have made substantial investments in FPS’ existing portfolio, identifying gaps and bringing in new products to fill them, by forging new partnerships and strengthening old associations. Throughout this issue, you will see how this investment is helping to improve our product range and increase application coverage. We kick-off with a look at evolving technologies towards better emission control systems like Cambiare lambda sensors. Our suppliers too are strengthening their offering and in this issue, you will find news from

CONTRIBUTORS THIS ISSUE…

GS about their new battery range as well as Boge’s extensive range of shock absorbers and Castrol’s technological advancements. Also featured are the new, segment-focused offerings such as the WWA short range rotating electrics programme and Bilstein premium shock absorbers programme. With FPS’ continued investment in its inventory, in this issue you can read about the extension of Shaftec’s winter range and our new product offering with Status International. CAMBIARE simplifies the science behind lambda sensors for VITAL NEWS. With so many vehicles in use on our roads, the reduction of pollutants produced by the internal combustion engine is of ever-increasing importance. To encourage advances in technology that can bring this about, governments have progressively introduced tougher exhaust gas emission legislation. Lambda sensors are an integral part of the emissions control system required to reduce exhaust emissions. Cambiare, the aftermarket specialist in vehicle electronics, has close to 600 lambda sensors in its range, with over thirty five parts added recently in December 2014. The range now covers more than 5,000 applications with the new to range additions. With four types of sensors, namely, Zirconia, Titania, Planar and Wide Band within its range, Cambiare gives a detailed update on the form, function and working of lambda sensors.

WHAT IS A LAMBDA SENSOR? Lambda sensors (also known as oxygen sensors) are devices fitted to petrol and diesel engines that measure the oxygen content of exhaust gases. The purpose of the sensor is to help the engine run as efficiently as possible while producing fewer emissions. The combustion of fuel within an engine occurs due to a mixture of air and fuel, ideally in the ratio of 14.7:1 in a petrol engine and 14.5:1 in the case of a diesel engine. This ratio is also known as the stoichiometric [pronounced: stoy·key·o·met·ric] ratio or Lambda (λ) where the mixture has a value of 1.0.

The lambda sensor must be hot enough (around 350°C) to generate a voltage signal. Modern vehicles are equipped with sensors that typically have 3 or 4 wires and a small heating element that aids in attaining the high temperature faster. The heating element also prevents the sensor from cooling down too much during a prolonged idle state, which would cause the system to revert to open loop*. Older, single-wired lambda sensors do not have heaters. Care should always be taken to replace a worn sensor with an identical one.

STOICHIOMETRIC (IDEAL)

RICH

During combustion, the ratio of air to fuel mixture varies. This can create the following situations:

• Less air would leave residual fuel after combustion, known as a rich mixture. The unburned fuel in a rich mixture creates pollution. • Excess oxygen intake, caused by the presence of more air than the stoichiometric ratio, creates a lean mixture. A lean mixture tends to produce more nitrogen-oxide pollutants and in some cases, it can cause poor performance and even engine damage.

AIR/FUEL RATIO = 12.6:1 LAMBDA (λ) = 0.86

POWER

MECHANISM The lambda sensor is positioned in the exhaust pipe and can detect rich and lean mixtures. The mechanism in most sensors involves a chemical reaction that generates a voltage. The engine’s computer (ECU) looks at the voltage and adjusts the fuel injector output accordingly, so as to bring it closer to the stoichiometric ratio (λ). READING ANALYSIS

BEST FUEL ECONOMY AIR/FUEL RATIO = 15.4:1 LAMBDA (λ) = 1.06

AIR/FUEL RATIO = 14.7:1 (PETROL) 14.5:1 (DIESEL) LAMBDA (λ) = 1 When the lambda sensor fails, the computer can no longer sense the air/fuel ratio, so it estimates the required quantities. This leads to poor performance and excessive fuel consumption by the vehicle.

(*Open loop is when the ECU eliminates the lambda sensor from its calculations) VITAL NEWS ISSUE 37

MAINTENANCE One-wire and two-wire unheated lambda sensors rely solely on hot exhaust gas to heat them up to operating temperatures and are designed to allow a large volume of exhaust gas to make contact with the active ceramic element, exposing them to contamination. They should be checked or replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Much less exhaust gas needs to contact the ceramic element in heated sensors, making them less prone to contamination. Heated sensors can also be located further downstream (closer to the catalytic converter) which increases their life expectancy. They should be checked or replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

FAULTS AND FAILURES Constantly exposed to the harsh environment found in an automobile’s exhaust system, the lambda sensor sustains a constant barrage of harmful exhaust gases, extreme heat and high velocity particulates. Sometimes contaminants such as coolant, oil or silicone particulates find their way to the sensor, contaminating it and rendering it inoperable.

A lambda sensor’s life is long, in some applications up to 100,000 miles. But its effectiveness will inevitably decrease over time, either by contamination or normal use. A worn sensor can cause unacceptable emission levels, affect performance and ultimately damage the catalytic converter. Therefore lambda sensors should be checked at each service.

THE DIAMOND HUNT VITAL NEWS digs deep and explores the benefits of the GATES Diamonds loyalty programme.

Gates has recently joined the ‘Automotive Diamonds’ customer loyalty programme. Formed in 2011, ‘Automotive Diamonds’ is the independent aftermarket’s fast-growing customer loyalty rewards initiative through which garages earn points or ‘diamonds’ on the purchase of Gates and other participating partners’ products, and build credit that can then be redeemed for their choice of fantastic rewards. The objective of the Diamonds programme is to encourage further growth in the aftermarket by rewarding garages for their purchasing loyalty to Gates and the other brands involved. Garages can earn ‘diamonds’ against the entire range of Gates belt drive systems and cooling products which includes:

• TIMING BELT KITS WITH WATER PUMP • MULTI-RIBBED MICRO-V BELTS • TENSIONERS • TORSION VIBRATION DAMPERS • OAPs & OADs • IDLERS & PULLEYS • THERMOSTAT & GASKETS • V-BELT

• MULTI-RIBBED MICRO-V BELT KITS • RADIATOR CAP • TIMING TOOLS • HOSES • FUEL CAPS • TIMING BELTS • TIMING BELT KITS

HOW IT WORKS The process is simple. From January 2015, potential garage customers will be targeted directly through a full media campaign, including trade shows and trade press to raise awareness of the scheme. To participate, the garage must first register its details at www.automotivediamonds.com. They will then be sent a welcome pack including envelope stickers that identify the garage. The garage then sends the relevant product labels along with the envelope stickers to ‘Automotive Diamonds’.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 37

Upon receipt, the stickers and labels are scanned to update the individual account and the account holder receives an update on the current value of ‘diamonds’ by e-mail.

How it works for garage owners

The ‘diamonds’ that members collect each time they purchase a Gates product can be redeemed in the online shop for large or small rewards, ranging from electronic products to useful garage and workshop equipment. The rewards are then shipped free of charge within a week.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER Another key feature of this programme is that the points do not have an expiry date. However, accounts that remain inactive for twelve months will be suspended, so labels should still be sent in and levels checked regularly.

BENEFITS FOR MOTOR FACTORS Although the programme has been conceived and developed to communicate with garages, it will not be used by Gates to approach participating workshops directly for business. Any ‘Automotive Diamonds’ campaign will convey messages about Gates and the other programme partners’ product quality, new developments and promotional activities. This will in turn assist the factors’ efforts to sell more Gates products. Join in the diamond hunt and discover the dazzling world of rewards at www.automotivediamonds.com or contact your local Gates or FPS representative for more information on the Gates Diamonds loyalty programme.

Full model-specific battery details are available online to help technicians

Q: What steps has GS taken towards compliance with the EUROBAT labelling legislation? JH: The legislation has directed that battery labels must now reflect a CCA (Cold Cranking Amp) and Ah (Ampere hour) rating accurately. For every reference, 100% of a supplier’s batteries must deliver the stated performance on the label within a 10% tolerance. The move was designed to combat unscrupulous importers/manufacturers who persistently over-rate the label specification. In addition, there are now minimum font sizes required for compliance. GS has always adhered to the EUROBAT standards. Moreover, we have mentioned the parts of the product on our labels.

Q: How is GS planning to support the new product lines? JH: We have set up a brand new online fitting system and a battery configuration tool–our pièce de résistance–YU-FIT. This allows workshops and retailers to ensure proper fitting of this comprehensive range of modern batteries and removes the possibility of incorrect specification batteries being fitted.

GS YU-FIT BATTERY CONFIGURATION TOOL Automotive manufacturers have introduced systems such as smart charge and Idle Start Stop (ISS) to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles; these require the replacement battery to be correctly configured to the vehicle after installation. The GS YU-FIT battery configuration tool allows the configuration process to be carried out on a growing number of such vehicles and prevents incorrect battery charging, ensures the correct operation of the ISS CO2 production control system and prevents the loss of non-critical vehicle system functions. Features: • Informs the vehicle that a new battery has been installed. • Informs the charging system of the new battery characteristics. • Ensures the vehicle uses the correct charging parameters for the new battery. The YU-FIT tool must be registered before use by downloading the GS YU-FIT application suite from the GS workshop battery finder website at http://batterylookup.gs-battery.com

Q: How do these support tools work? JH: Fitters can simply enter the vehicle registration or search by make/model or VIN/chassis number online and the system provides battery type, capacity, location on vehicle, estimated fitting time and location of the OBD socket. This is complemented by full OE level step-by-step fitting instructions that can also be printed out for convenience. When the fitment is complete, the new battery can be registered to the vehicle’s ECU as well as clearing any fault codes using YU-FIT. The whole exercise takes only a couple of minutes.

THE STRONGER VITAL NEWS investigates how the new CASTROL EDGE Titanium FST™ can boost sales opportunities. Engine pressures have almost doubled over the past 30 years, with modern engines working harder and running hotter to maintain maximum engine efficiency with lower emissions. A good lubricant not only manages engine heat and reduces friction and wear, but also protects against the effects of high temperature and damaging contaminants. It also helps the engine deliver fuel efficiency with optimum levels of protection and performance.

RIGHT OIL FOR THE RIGHT CAR Most drivers in the UK consider the car manufacturer’s recommendation as the prime criteria while selecting the brand of oil. Castrol is amongst the most recommended oils on the market with a range that is fully ‘approved’ by manufacturers, owing to its consistent research initiative.

THE BREAKTHROUGH With the change in structure and efficiency of the engines, oil too needs to be stronger, stay stronger and constantly adapt to the engine’s needs, in all driving conditions. Castrol EDGE Titanium FST™ physically changes the way oil behaves under extreme engine pressures, owing to the addition of Titanium FST™. The unique titanium polymer is proven to combat friction by up to 15% (compared to Castrol EDGE, without Titanium FST™) by forming shock-absorbing pads that reduce metal-to-metal contact, which may critically damage engine components, helping the engine to deliver better performance.

Over the last decade, more than 2,400 individual lubricant blends were tested by Castrol, using a wide range of different tools and processes to develop the optimal specification. This analysis included tests to prove the lubricant’s capacity to reduce friction, minimise metal-to-metal contact, prevent wear and corrosion and operate at extremes of high and low temperatures.

BRAND BENEFIT

In an independent engine test for film strength, lubricants with Castrol EDGE Titanium FST™ maintained their film strength for at least 140 hours longer than the same oils without the Titanium FST™. It has also been found that under extreme pressures, Titanium FST™ doubles its film strength, preventing oil film breakdown, thus better reducing friction.

Charles Wakefield patented his first lubricant at the beginning of the 20th century. With more than 115 years of innovation, Castrol has collaborated with customers and pioneers in the motorcar, motorcycle and aviation industries. The same innovative and collaborative spirit has kept Castrol at the fore-front of cutting-edge oil technology.

VALUE ADDITION With its ground-breaking technology and specifications, Castrol EDGE Titanium FST™ can help boost sales opportunities for motor factors by:

• providing valuable top-up sales opportunities; • lending outstanding engine protection for vehicles; • helping build customer satisfaction and loyalty. Please contact your local FPS representative, or log on to F:Drive for more information on the Castrol EDGE Titanium FST™ range.

VITAL NEWS unveils the aftermarket potential of FPS’ rotating electrics offering with REMY and the newly launched WWA. The car’s electrical system has been designed to tolerate a lot of stress. Many motorists drive without realising the exertion of the starters and alternators until winter, when the problems become more apparent. This makes rotating electrics one of the biggest distress sectors in the aftermarket with a long grey tail. FPS has invested significantly to stock a comprehensive offering including Remy, the worldwide OE manufacturer and the UK’s leading remanufacturer of starters and alternators and the newly included range from World Wide Automotive (WWA) so the factors don’t have to. Here are the different programmes to boost business opportunities for factors and their customers.

REMY STARTERS AND ALTERNATORS The cranking system of a vehicle gets extremely distressed in winter, owing to the increased demands placed on the alternator reserves. Additionally, the extra boost needed by the starters due to falling temperatures overnight depletes the available cranking power to the battery drastically. Furthermore, the wet and salty road conditions corrode the parts and result in loose or broken starting and charging system connections.

As a global OE manufacturer, Remy builds all its units to meet or exceed OE specifications and undergo an end of line functionality test. This reduces warranty rates ensuring the reliability of the products supplied to customers.

HEAVY DUTY (HD) ROTATING ELECTRICS FROM REMY Based on successful sales of Remy’s HD starters and alternators and positive feedback from customers, FPS is now stocking more popular parts from the Remy HD rotating electrics range. The Remy Heavy Duty range is a combination of brand new and remanufactured products devised to provide the best quality and range in the market and is available for next-day delivery throughout the UK.

Features: • All units are built and fully tested to OE specifications. • 2 year/60,000 miles ‘no quibble’ warranty–whichever comes first. Additionally, FPS offers a free core collection service, usually same or next day. This means that factors don’t have to wait until they have a full pallet for it to be collected, allowing them to free up cash immediately.

A 360° VIEW OF ROTATING ELECTRICS

WWA STARTERS AND ALTERNATORS

FPS recently identified a new market segment with big business opportunities: a short range of surcharge-free starters and alternators. The demand has been created owing to an ageing vehicle parc and the customers’ unwillingness to pay the price for a premium OE product, where an extreme price pressure exists.

FPS therefore has recently launched the World Wide Automotive (WWA) brand of rotating electrics, designed specifically as a short range that allows factors to choose a branded, quality product while operating in a price sensitive market. Although the electrical system of a vehicle is designed to accommodate the above, weaknesses are more apparent in winter (as may have been evident to factors). This leads to an increased number of complaints about bad battery, poor connections or reduced alternator output, resulting in starting/charging problems. TRANSMISSION IMPOSSIBLE VITAL NEWS examines the SHAFTEC transmission programme for 2015. Shaftec driveshaft and constant velocity joints (CVJs) are one of the most successful product ranges in the FPS portfolio and this is forecasted to only increase further in 2015. Shaftec’s transmission programme focuses on the products that are prone to high failure rates leading to high demand in the aftermarket. Shaftec offers new CVJs and a recently introduced range of CV boots through FPS, with a focus on remanufacturing for their driveshaft product range. As the range of driveshaft, CVJs and CV boots is ever-increasing, factors will only typically stock the most popular applications due to their cost and size. Therefore, factors can rely on FPS’ same/next-day delivery to meet their customer demands.

TRANSMISSION BASICS The driveshaft is the link between the engine and the wheels and is made up of an inner and outer joint along with a connecting shaft. Its function is to transmit the engine’s rotational power (i.e. torque) to the wheels.

which can otherwise cause corrosion to the internal components and ultimately lead to their premature failure. The inner and outer CV boots also act as a means to seal essential lubrication in.

INCREASED DEMAND IN THE WINTER MONTHS Driveshafts and CVJs come under increased pressure during the winter months. If the boots on the CVJs split, water ingress and salt can corrode the internals of the joint. The combination of poor quality roads and extremely wet winter conditions typically results in an increased demand for these parts in the first quarter of the year. Other issues that can go wrong with a driveshaft or a CVJ are:

The CVJ allows the driveshaft to drive the wheels of the vehicle through all degrees and at a constant velocity. This is made possible through the use of ball bearings running in a ‘race’.

INNER RACE

CAGE

• • • • • •

Wear in ball bearings in CVJ. Wear on spline of the driveshaft. CV boot not fitted correctly. Wear on outer and inner race of the CVJ. Lack of maintenance–not regularly lubricated. Fitting damage (spline, thread, inner and outer race).

RANGE HIGHLIGHTS Range development is an essential factor behind Shaftec’s successful offering. Popular applications include: PART NO. FO210L BK269 CV334AN

BALL

The CVJ consists of the following: OUTER CVJ: allows the driveshaft to transmit the engine’s rotational power through a variable angle and at a constant velocity. INNER CVJ: is the direct link between the transmission and the driveshaft. The inner CVJ turns with the rotation of the engine and spins the driveshaft with it. INNER AND OUTER CV BOOTS: protect the CVJs by keeping dirt and water out and reducing the chance of salt entering the system,

SAY NO TO BUMPY RIDES WITH

VITAL NEWS investigates how BOGE consistently tops the list for buyers sourcing suspension systems. With the average age of vehicles on the rise in the UK, the market for suspension systems has seen a sizeable growth. Shock absorbers are extremely crucial to the safety of a vehicle. As the vehicle grows old and has travelled through many thousands of miles, the shock absorbers deteriorate and wear out. Research studies show that the average car is likely to need at least one set of replacement shocks during its lifetime, irrespective of vehicle type, driving style and usage. The aim in shock absorber replacement should be to restore the vehicle to its original operating characteristics and give consideration to other suspension components that should be replaced simultaneously. This is where Boge has been able to carve a niche for itself in the automotive aftermarket.

It is interesting to note that the sale of Boge shock absorbers through FPS continues to rise, irrespective of market conditions. What works for Boge besides the quality and wide range, is the excellent availability of the products due to FPS’ huge stock holding and efficient distribution arrangements.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY The basic principle behind the working of a shock absorber is that the valve system offers a progressive and controlled damping action. The valve components in Boge shock absorbers are precision-made parts that provide accurate and consistent damping performance during the life of the product. The mounting joints consisting of bushings and age-resistant, wear-resistant rubber materials form a highly durable and sound-proof link between wheel suspension and chassis.

BETTER THAN THE REST Boge offers an extensive portfolio of suspension systems that assures both safety and comfort. The OE quality of Boge shock absorbers enables simple replacement with precision parts and assures the end-user of the quality, comfort and durability of the original factory specification. The full range of Boge shock absorbers, top mounts and service kits amounts to more than 3,600 part references across 43 different vehicle manufacturers.

16 SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

A major challenge in the automotive industry is achieving greater fuel efficiency; Boge shock absorbers from ZF contribute towards these targets by manufacturing shock absorbers with lightweight materials, such as aluminium housings, which help in reducing the overall weight on some vehicle applications.

QUALITY MATTERS Boge shock absorbers are tested alongside other steering and suspension components in the vehicle during the development stage, enabling better fit and performance. The quality of suspension can have an adverse effect on other systems in the vehicle, such as ABS, electronic steering and ESP to name a few. Choosing a sub-standard, low-priced option could compromise these potential safety critical systems. Boge’s OE quality and precision manufactured shock absorbers give the reassurance that none of these critical systems will be compromised. This ensures the safety of the end-user as well as confidence for garages and motor factors.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 37

The replacement part, once fitted, is expected to provide the best possible performance for the customer, offering the safety and comfort felt in a new vehicle. If the internal damping rates, such as compression and rebound are not perfectly matched to the manufacturer’s original specifications, it can affect other safety aspects such as emergency braking procedures. In such cases, the braking distances could drastically increase by up to 50% while driving at 40mph or more.

COMMON FAULTS AND DIAGNOSTICS The factors affecting a shock absorber and causing its deterioration are:

• Road unevenness like potholes and ground waves that can pierce the shock absorbers.

• Damage of the piston by salt residue, stones and water. • General wear and tear. • Old or worn/damaged repair kits (bump stops) or missing protective gaiters.

TOP MOUNTS AND SERVICE KITS Just like shock absorbers, top mounts too eventually wear out. It is therefore recommended that these are regularly inspected for wear, and certainly renewed whenever the shock absorbers are replaced. FPS also offers the Boge shock absorber service kit, to complement many applications in range that need them. The service kit comprises of a spring assister or bump stop and a gaiter that protects the shock absorber piston rod from road debris. In the case of gaiter replacement, there is the psychological aspect to consider, as replacing the more visible gaiter can help reassure the customer that a thorough job has been done.

Wayne McCluskey, ZF Services advises, “Spring assistors should be changed if they are worn or degraded, or if they are contaminated with oil from a previously failed shock absorber. The oil attracts grit and this can damage the chromed finish on the piston rod. Under no circumstances should spring assistor lengths be shortened in order to aid shock absorber fitment as this could damage the shock absorber valve under full compression”.

These can lead to common faults in the shock absorber and mounting, such as:

• Oil leaks: With each stroke, the piston rod transfers a small amount of oil to keep it lubricated. While a ‘misting’ of oil on the outer tube is normal, larger volumes indicate a failing piston rod seal. • Worn mountings: The top mount is the upper fixing between the shock absorber and the vehicle body. This is a compliant rubber-to-metal component that prevents damping and suspension forces and their associated noise and vibration from being transferred to the cabin. Normal wear, fitting errors or consequential damage due to the operating environment can deteriorate the rubber mountings, making noise and vibration more prevalent. Side loading predominantly causes oil leaks on the shock absorber. Depending on the severity of the side loading, this may cause an accelerated rate of wear to the top mount and/or its bearing but the majority of the time, it’s the shock absorber that will have the issue due to the top seal wearing.

ALWAYS REPLACE IN PAIRS The risk involved in not replacing the safety-critical shock absorbers in axle pairs shows that the advice is not a mere marketing gimmick. The gradual deterioration in a shock absorber’s performance may go unnoticed by a driver, but a potential difference of 25% damping force between a worn and new damper will certainly make itself felt under heavy braking or other avoidance manoeuvres, with potentially disastrous consequences.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 37

HELLO, FRESHNESS! Vital News checks out the friendly, fragranced characters from

Winplus, the consumer products company specialising in automotive lifestyle products, has been known to add innovation and style to auto accessories. Distributed through FPS, Winplus aims to offer flexibility and the highest standard of customer service, whilst providing quality products at competitive prices. With a multi-brand offering including Type S, Yada and Blue Magic, Winplus covers a wide range of products in multiple categories including air fresheners, Bluetooth® and convenience accessories, comfort and storage solutions as well as maintenance products. Its latest offering in the pursuit of innovative products is YoJello® 3D Gel Air Fresheners.

INNOVATION Whilst the air freshener category has continued to be strong, it risks becoming dull and repetitive. There has been a general lack of innovation in recent years and the end-user has experienced little change in the devices offered. A recent category analysis conducted by Winplus confirmed that the scope to introduce a new and innovative air freshener with broad consumer appeal existed. Based on these findings, Winplus developed YoJello® as a fun family of air fresheners. The product has been designed with character and personality to add a new dimension to the otherwise predictable segment. The range has been developed to include ‘cartoon’ variants, each with their own back stories, to generate stronger interest that would engage the consumer, create a trend and stimulate the desire to repeat purchase.

RANGE OVERVIEW YoJello® currently offers two fun characters–Coolio and Sunny. The brand new addition, Eve, will be arriving in February 2015.

Each character is available in four vibrant colours with their own fresh fragrance: VARIANT Apple Holiday Ice Cream Tutti Frutti

COLOUR Green Blue Yellow Pink

FRAGRANCE Fruity (like apple) Cool (like ocean) Vanilla Mixed fruit

There is a plan to release more characters, colours and fragrances in 2015, as part of ongoing developments.

FEATURES Unlike most other air fresheners, YoJello® has multiple applications and is a versatile product.

• It sticks to most clean surfaces including glass, tiles, mirrors and dashboards. • It can be hung from the rear-view mirror in the car or placed anywhere at home or in the office. • It can also be removed and reapplied up to three times. • The fragrance lasts up to 60 days. • All products are non-corrosive, non-toxic and are fully EU and REACH compliant. Furthermore, the 3D gel does not leave stains on surfaces it is stuck on. However, in extremely hot conditions, it is advisable to wipe the air freshener and the surface with a damp, lint-free cloth, while repositioning the product.

POINT OF SALE SUPPORT More characters, colours and fragrances are planned for this year. Various merchandising support materials are available that include clip strips, counter displays, free-standing display units, window stickers and shelf wobblers, along with online and print campaigns.

MORE ON OFFER Winplus also offers a range of air fresheners under their Type S brand. The high quality fragrances were developed in Europe and include Vanilla, Green Apple, Ocean, Tropical, Summer Breeze and Wildberry. The diverse range offered includes Paper, Wick Bottle, Membrane and Vent Stick. All are REACH compliant and exceed the highest European standards. Please contact your local FPS representative for more information on the exciting YoJello® range of air fresheners.

LET’S DO AN CHECK! “Do you ignore possible spill risks? Do your employees understand what procedures to follow when handling a spill? Do you know hefty fines are issued by the Environment Agency for ongoing environmental non-conformity?” These are just a few questions that motor factors should ask themselves and their customers. An independent assessment of the workplace, followed by a report helps but a basic understanding of spill management still remains necessary. Ecospill stresses to Vital News the importance of spill assessments and management in the workplace. With a wide range of market-leading spill management products available through FPS to help companies manage their environmental responsibilities and comply with the law, Ecospill has provided the following guidance on handling spills on site.

TYPES OF SPILL KITS Analysing the liquids and solvents utilised in operations helps decide upon the type of kit required. It is also necessary to recognise the highest potential risk in the area of operation, or if the place needs different types of kits. The three basic kits available are:

SPILL VOLUME It is always wise to prevent spills from seeping into the storm water system, rather than trying to remediate a spill. Spill kits should therefore be employed in conjunction with containment products. Ecospill advises to check the size and capacity of the largest tank that could rupture and cause a spill. This will give an idea of the size of the spill kit to be used. It is always advisable to use British Standard compliant spill kits with high absorbency capacity.

SPILL ASSESSMENT Taking an objective look around, carefully noting the camber of the surface and proximity to the drains is a good place to start an assessment. Better still is to get an expert’s opinion. Whilst most procedures are straight-forward (contain, absorb, remediate), there are situations when an educated response is advised, especially when its nature cannot be fully assessed. Nevertheless, it is wise to always put protective clothing on, place the absorbents where necessary and monitor the spill from a safe distance.

TYPE CONTROLS SPILLS OF USAGE Maintenance Oils, coolants, and other water-based, Indoors or areas less prone to Absorbent non-corrosive fluids wash down water Clean up of oil on water; oilOil Only Oil-based liquids/hydrocarbons only based spills in the rain or snow Spill teams reacting to a spill Chemical Corrosive chemicals and liquids of unknown origin

HIGH-RISK ZONES Spill kits are, quite rightly, mostly placed in the obvious areas like laboratories, workshops, chemical storage areas, near generators and fuel tanks, but there is a tendency to forget about the ‘other’ areas of risk.

SURVEYS Ecospill offers a no obligation ‘Full Site Survey’ with written report to establish and highlight areas of non-compliance that may exist on site. Such surveys are particularly relevant when seeking an ISO14001 or similar EMS accreditation. Any outlet to storm water, like a drain, is a possible spill risk area. Parking areas, truck yards or areas where batteries are recharged risk leakage and may contaminate the sub-soil and ground water. ‘Transport Spill kits’ can be used in vehicles to protect against such an eventuality; these kits have handles, making them easy to manoeuvre in the area of spill.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 37

The ‘Full Site Survey’ can be followed up with ‘Certificated Spill Prevention and Response Training’, if required. Log on to F:Drive or contact your local FPS representative for additional information regarding the range of spill kits from Ecospill.

...AND FINALLY IAAF UPDATE

IAAF President, Graham Knight speaks about activities in 2014 and plans for 2015.

To the Aftermarket,

2014 was a year full of changes and I would not be surprised to see this continue into 2015. Increased competition has meant that some companies have evaluated their overall offer, which is a good thing, as it leads them to offer an improved service and healthy competition. The internet is both an opportunity and threat to our sector so must be taken seriously. Thanks to the many companies that offer support in this area, motor factors have quickly established an online presence, embracing this new technology and begun trading effectively, in most cases allowing garages to buy parts with a click of a button. The IAAF, as the main trade association representing the independent automotive aftermarket, has had a very active year. Our main aim has been to promote and secure the future of the independent automotive aftermarket to the benefit of our members and we lobby in both the UK and at EU level to protect their interests. We support every aspect of a member’s business and provide beneficial services such as insurance, healthcare, lifestyle protection plans and legal helpline. We develop and maintain effective links with government departments, regulators and allied trade associations. A key area of activity for us at the end of 2014 and into 2015 is to look at the opportunities and threats to the trade in the area of vehicle telematics. We’re bringing to the attention of the UK independent aftermarket, FIGIEFA’s video on “The Connected Car - How to ensure fair and competitive mobility throughout Europe”. The ‘Connected Car’ video explains how telematics will soon affect the aftermarket value chain and other related industries. Available to view at www.iaaf.co.uk, the video provides an introduction to telematics, an issue that has been accelerated by the European eCall project. As of 2015, the European Commission and the European Parliament plan the mandatory introduction of eCall, the European 112-based emergency call system, in all new models of cars and light vehicles, in order to save lives and reduce the severity of injuries on the road. IAAF and FIGIEFA say that eCall will revolutionise the way vehicles are serviced and repaired, enabling vehicle manufacturers to get real-time information about vehicles’ health status. However, this will give vehicle manufacturers a game changing advantage, as independent operators do not currently have the same access in the same timescale. As things stand, vehicle manufacturers would exclusively be able to decide who has access to the vehicle and its data, which services will be allowed, under what conditions – and for what price. This is another ‘must win’ battle for the independent aftermarket and we are seeking a level playing field allowing the independent aftermarket to compete with the vehicle manufacturers to the benefit of the consumer. If there is any information that you seek regarding the above issues, or wish to have your opinion heard, please log on to: IAAF–www.iaaf.co.uk or Right2Choose–www.right2choose.org.uk or mail me at my email address below. Kind regards,

COMPETITION TIME WITH KILEN! KILEN delivers a world of opportunities with the new 2015 coil spring catalogue!

Kilen has added more than 400 new parts to its spring catalogue. The 2015 catalogue incorporates a new range of tapered wire alternatives alongside Kilen’s existing parallel wire designs. Both products are of the highest quality and competitively priced. While the parallel wire design offers a 3-year warranty, the tapered wire springs have a 2-year warranty. Furthermore, the Kilen 2015 gas spring catalogue contains over 1,500 gas springs for tailgate and bonnet applications. The leading range of OE quality springs is available from FPS on same/next-day delivery service. Spring into action this New Year with a 64GB iPad Air 2 from Kilen. To be in with a chance for winning, all you have to do is correctly complete the quiz on the right.
