INSIDE THIS ISSUE… DON’T MISS THE ‘HARD-TO FIND’ PARTS INSERT WITH THIS ISSUE!

Note from the MD

Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News. Let me begin by wishing you a very Happy New Year! I hope 2016 brings success for everyone involved with the independent aftermarket. As I write this, the much hyped “Bewick’s Swans’ early arrival” in October indicating a long cold winter has just turned into the warmest November on record and December is currently being forecast as wet and windy with variable temperatures. Whilst the second half of the winter may yet return to more seasonal norms, this highlights the importance of sensible demand, planning an inventory management through the winter, and not risking the company cash flow on the basis of one swan. Elsewhere the VW US “cheat device” and subsequent European emissions tests are raising the profile of emissions, not just for new vehicles but also for the aftermarket. This may bring Type Approval into sharper focus, which would favour the quality brands with the best compliance. It may also have a knock on effect, with regulatory focus into other product areas, which will again favour those with good quality programmes. On that note, read on as TRW offers an analysis on the impact of the ECE R90 on brake disc sales. As always, we continually try and bring forth better quality and depth of range on various automotive components, which is why Ring bulbs was recently introduced into our portfolio – check out the detailed cover feature on page 4. We also bring an update of

our inventory of wiper systems – both motors and blades, as well as our extensive multitiered engine management programme and a feature on the HGV+ platform, so you don’t miss those essential sales opportunities these products bring forth. We also take a look at the top 10 bestsellers introduced by 360°. Speaking of emerging technology, Cambiare has introduced a short range of sensors aiding Variable Valve Technology, so don’t miss page 7 for an in-depth study – while Boge describes the new Sensitive Damping Control tech on page 20. Furthermore, GS updates you with the various typologies of modern batteries, so you can make an informed decision while dealing with your garage customers. Do remember to cast an eye over the Portwest and Energizer articles to know what’s new in the PPE and jump starter markets, plus the new range of products from Royal, in preparation of the spring season. As always, we hope to receive your feedback on how best to provide you with better services and aid you in creating better business, so do let us know. Meanwhile, happy reading! Included in the Ring Quality Assurance process are stringent quality check procedures which are undertaken on a continuous basis. The department has been independently assessed by BSI and has achieved the highest standards in Quality Assurance; the department has also been awarded ISO 9001 certification for the manufacture and assembly of automotive lighting. Ring complies with ECE Regulation 37 and WEEE Directive on the disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, all of which deliver an assured confidence to FPS when distributing Ring’s awardwinning range of bulbs to customers.

MARKET DEMAND The life of a bulb is dependent on varying factors, including the type of bulb and the vehicle, the number of times vehicle lights have been switched on/off, vibration, the ease at which the glass of the bulb dissipates heat and the actual running voltage of the vehicle (which can be as high as 14.8 volts).

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 41

UNDERSTANDING HID BULBS

Automotive bulbs are typically required to:

• replace faulty or failed bulbs • upgrade for better light output and performance Ring recommends the replacement of bulbs in pairs to ensure colour match and consistent light output; with a range of innovative lighting products, Ring assures increased efficiency and performance. For example, the new Xenon 130 offers up to 130% more light on the road than standard bulbs. Ring has a range of LED replacements (for off-road use only) and bulb kits to fit most vehicles. The Ring TruckMaster 24 volt bulbs for commercial vehicles are manufactured to OE specification and offer superb quality and long life performance, providing substantial cost savings against vehicle downtime and maintenance costs.

CATALOGUING AND SUPPORT All Ring bulbs are represented on MAM Autocat+ within the Lighting > Bulbs > Bulbs section and FPS’ e-catalogue, the F:Drive, within both Components and Maintenance & Accessories sections. A technical bulb catalogue and product-specific supporting literature are available from FPS, along with bulb charts, product videos, e-flyers and sales support flyers.

Although High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamp bulbs (also known as Gas Discharge or Xenon bulbs) have steadily increased in usage across the automotive market, they are often misunderstood as they are perceived as expensive and requiring specialist knowledge. Ring explains what HID bulbs are, in order to improve clarity, confidence in fitting them and to help grow sales within the aftermarket. “Technicians are generally put off by the high voltage start-up pulse produced by HID bulbs (typically 24,000 volts), which ignites the gas to generate a bright white light. As a result of this concern, customers are usually sent to the main dealer who then charges a substantially high price to replace HID bulbs; clearly the high voltage start-up can be potentially hazardous, but if safety instructions are followed they can be fitted perfectly safely”.

Benefits • Up to 3x brighter and have higher luminance than halogens • Produce a crisp white light output close to daylight • Incredibly long life The obvious difference between HID and standard bulbs is that HIDs have no filament and instead use a glass capsule in the centre of the bulb containing Xenon gas. Factors should encourage garages to fit HID bulbs, two of the main benefits are:

• No customer is lost to the main dealer or a competitor who can replace HID bulbs • Increased sales and margin opportunities, as replacing a HID bulb generates considerably more profit than replacing a standard bulb Ring has produced a fitting video as well as a detailed fitting guide for HID bulbs and a hard copy is available from FPS upon request.

Speak to your local FPS representative for more information.

SUMMARY

BULBS 5

CHARGING MODERN VEHICLES GS BATTERIES offers a market overview of the Hybrid and Start/Stop batteries fitting modern vehicles for VITAL NEWS readers.

Whilst battery sales thrive during winter, with modern vehicles, it is important to ensure that only a product with the correct specification, suitability and quality is being used; especially where replacement is not a straightforward fit-and-forget task.

SUITING START/STOP TECHNOLOGY Vehicles equipped with Start/Stop technology are becoming increasingly common, making it important for technicians and factors to be well informed on the complexities and time required for their replacement. A standard ignition vehicle will typically be started two or three times a day; with Start/Stop vehicles, this can rise to over 50 times. To cope with the higher demand placed on the battery, GS introduced two new types: absorbed glass mat (AGM) for high specification vehicles and enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) for lower specification vehicles. The technology used in these batteries offers much higher cyclic capability and durability to cope with the demands of repeated cranking cycles. On vehicles with advanced technology, it is essential that the battery is replaced with one of the correct specification. If a vehicle is fitted with an AGM Start/Stop battery then the replacement must also be AGM Start/Stop. The same applies to EFB products. The GS AGM range includes 6 references while the EFB range has 13. These are fully maintenance free, built to OE standards and include advanced safety features. On vehicles fitted with Battery Management Systems (BMS), it is essential to reprogram the unit via the on-board diagnostics (OBD) port to validate the newly fitted battery; this can be done quickly using the GS Yu-Fit configuration tool. Failure to do so can cause battery failure, system faults and in-car error messages or even a complete loss of Start/Stop functionality.

6 BATTERIES

AUXILIARY/BACK-UP BATTERIES - AIDING ADVANCED SYSTEMS Modern vehicles with CO2 reduction technologies, higher specifications and new electronic driver aids may feature an auxiliary battery alongside the main vehicle starter battery or the high voltage system battery on hybrid and electric vehicles. Auxiliary batteries vary in size and specification and can be used either as a safety back-up to the main battery, or to provide voltage for specific vehicle systems all of the time.

Case Studies

• Mercedes E and S Class vehicles feature an advanced brake by wire system: Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC), that relies on electrical power and a minimum system voltage; in the event of the main starter battery becoming too low or a charging system failure, the vehicles are equipped with an auxiliary battery as a safety back-up • Hybrid vehicles like Toyota Prius feature an additional, conventional 12 Volt auxiliary battery, which is not used for engine starting or to power the traction motors but to supply power to accessory systems, headlights, entertainment systems and computer controls • Electric vehicles like Mitsubishi i-miev feature an additional, conventional 12 Volt auxiliary battery that is not used by the traction motor but is charged by the traction battery and used to support all the electrical systems on the vehicle, except the air conditioning and heating systems GS offers a comprehensive range of high quality auxiliary, backup and specialist batteries which cover the most popular vehicle brands in Europe. Search GS battery lookup to find the GS Online Battery Lookup tool and locate the correct battery, plus valuable information like estimated fitting time, battery and OBD location and fitting instruction.

Full model-specific battery details are available online to help technicians

INTERPRETING VARIABLE VALVE TECHNOLOGY VITAL NEWS understands the nitty-gritty of Variable Valve Technology from vehicle electronics specialist CAMBIARE.

NEW range Keeping up pace with modern vehicle technology, Cambiare has been continually bringing in new parts to the aftermarket. Now introducing a short, specialist range of sensors and solenoid to assist in the operation of variable valves, Cambiare explains Variable Valve Technology.

MECHANISM The valves in an engine operated by a camshaft, open and close to allow:

1. intake of fresh fuel/air mixture into the engine 2. ejection of combusted gas from the engine into the exhaust With a lot of engines, these actions occur at fixed specific intervals of the engine stroke, meaning the valves open and close at the same point in relation to the crankshaft position throughout the complete RPM range of an engine. This can have limitations in emissions control, performance and efficiency as the optimum valve timing at low engine RPM will differ from that at high engine RPM. Some vehicle manufacturers now incorporate variable valve systems to maximise performance, economy and emission control. Variable valve timing (VVT) and variable valve lift (VVL) are both systems used in engines to vary the timing and duration of the opening and closing of the valves in relation to the crankshaft position. Simply put, the valve events can be suited to engine speeds and loads.

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT) This system can vary when the valves open and close but does not influence the duration. This is achieved by numerous methods, most commonly by cam phasing, where the valve timing is adjusted by changing the position of the driven cam pulley on the camshaft. When maximum power is required by the engine, opening the exhaust valve later helps release the burnt exhaust gas completely from the cylinder. This creates a longer valve overlap, where exhaust gas leaving the cylinder helps draw fresh air in. In doing this, more oxygen rich air enters the engine, ready for the next compression stroke. When maximum power is not required, opening the exhaust valve earlier only partially empties the cylinder, leaving the oxygen deprived gas in the combustion chamber, thus reducing fuel consumption and the emission of harmful NOx gases by reducing the combustion temperature.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 41

VARIABLE VALVE LIFT (VVL) This system varies the duration of the valve opening, allowing it to stay open for longer under certain conditions. Although VVL systems operate slightly differently to VVT systems, both systems are used to achieve the same emissions control and engine performance benefits. This is done in a number of different ways, dependent on the specific system. While some systems will engage a higher lifting camshaft lobe that runs on its own follower that lifts both the valves further, other systems may use a different shaped cam lobe to hold the valves open longer. These can be shifted along the camshaft by engaging solenoids, when required. Part no. VE715021: Camshaft Adjustment Solenoid (VVT) for Vauxhall Astra 1.6

Part no. VE363590: Eccentric Shaft Sensor (VVL) for CitroĂŤn C4 1.4

Part no. VE363589: Eccentric Shaft Sensor (VVL) for BMW E46 2.0 Part no. VE363609: Eccentric Shaft Sensor (VVL) for BMW E88 3.0

COMMON FAULTS Common issues with variable valve systems can be down to contamination of the oil needed for the operation of dephaser pulleys and wear and tear of the components. Oil galleries within the pulleys and actuators can get blocked up with sludge or debris. As the actuators and position sensors on both VVT and VVL systems are electronically controlled, wiring faults can also occur.

RELY ON CAMBIARE Cambiare’s specialist range of sensors and solenoid encompasses both VVL and VVT technology; with just 4 part numbers covering more than 700,000 vehicles on the UK roads, there are plans to bring more parts into range in the coming months. Speak to your local Cambiare or FPS representative today or log on to www.cambiare-ve.com to know more about the complete Cambiare offering.

VARIABLE VALVE TECHNOLOGY 7

ENGAGING EFFICIENCY VITAL NEWS reviews the newly launched Viscous Fan Couplings range from BG AUTOMOTIVE and its claim as the best option for the independent aftermarket.

Despite being part of more than 960,000 vehicles in the UK, viscous fan couplings (also known as viscous fans or viscous fan clutches in the aftermarket) are one of the lesser known parts of the engine cooling system. Being a high value ticket item at OE level, dealers service only a very limited business while the aftermarket for this product is shared between 8-10 suppliers. Although these suppliers have gained a small foothold within the market, none of them offers a full range and so factors need to multi-source parts to support the varied UK car parc. This is neither practical nor cost effective.

MECHANISM The mechanism of this product is based on the bimetal sensor located at the front of the viscous fan. This sensor expands or contracts, depending on the temperature imparted through the radiator.

At cold temperature The bimetal sensor contracts closing the valve, so the silicone fluid remains in the reservoir chamber.

To counter this, aftermarket specialist BGA has launched the most comprehensive range of viscous fan couplings, consisting of 60 references. BGA has further planned NTR introductions to expand the range to around 80 references throughout 2016, to keep the range relevant to the UK market. Covering 94% of the UK vehicle parc fitted with viscous fan couplings, across 700 lines of application, including European and Asian makes as well as LCVs, the range caters for the likes of Ford Transit Mk 4, 5, 6, Mitsubishi L200 and VW Passat.

VITAL STATISTICS

Viscous fan couplings are used on cars with inline engine positions, mainly rear wheel drive.

At this stage, the viscous fan coupling is disengaged and turns at around 20% of the rotation speed of the engine.

At operating temperature The bimetal sensor expands, rotating the valve and allowing the silicone fluid to move through the entire chamber to the outer edges. This generates enough torque to drive the cooling fan blades at engine operating speeds and remain at a consistent temperature.

Location:

Between the water pump pulley and the radiator Function:

• Controls fan speeds to aid engine cooling • Aids in the efficiency of the engine by engaging the fan, when necessary • Reduces load on the engine Assembly:

Either assembled directly to a flanged shaft mounted onto the pulley of the water pump or threaded directly to the water pump hub. 8 ENGINE COOLING

At this stage, the viscous fan coupling is engaged and turns at around 80% of the rotation speed of the engine.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 41

QUALITY AND TESTING BGA viscous fan couplings are fully tested before release to the aftermarket to ensure high quality of the replacement products. The process involves testing the engagement and disengagement temperatures of the product and comparing the data against an OE part to warrant correct performance.

UNDERSTANDING THE SENSOR

The bimetal sensor governs the functioning of the viscous fan coupling. Primarily, there are two kinds of bimetal sensor systems: plate and coil. Both of them work under the same principle, as explained previously. Coil Sensor System

The only difference is that whilst the coil expands and contracts to turn the rotation plate, in the plate system, the bimetal contracts and bends, moving the slide plate and allowing the silicone fluid to move from the reservoir chamber to the cavity. Plate Sensor System

FAILURE It is good practice to always check the condition of the viscous fan coupling when the water pump is replaced, since a worn coupling will directly affect the water pump’s lifespan. A failed viscous fan coupling can stay stuck in the engagement position; meaning it will always run at 80% of the engine rotation speed, can cause noise and vibration under high speeds and will increase fuel consumption. On the other hand, if the viscous fan coupling fails in the disengaged position, it will not draw air through the radiator, thus directly upsetting the cooling process of the engine.

Common causes of failure include:

• Leaking silicone fluid, disengaging the fan coupling • Bimetal sensor losing its properties due to surface oxidation, causing the coupling to be stuck disengaged • Bearing failure, although uncommon, can occur if the viscous fan coupling has not been replaced after high mileage and the condition of the blades has deteriorated VITAL NEWS ISSUE 41

SALES OPPORTUNITY Viscous fan couplings have been a logical addition to BGA’s cooling portfolio and factors too should treat it as an associated sale for the relevant applications. When replacing the water pump, it is best practice to check that the viscous fan coupling is operating correctly as well. In the current market, this part could be overlooked during the replacement of the water pump, which could lead to factors missing out on a sales opportunity whilst the vehicle owner potentially would have to pay a second labour charge to replace the coupling at a later stage. With the comprehensive range, supported by excellent stocking and logistics from FPS, the BGA viscous fan couplings range is clearly a reliable choice for the motor factor.

SUMMARY • Viscous fan couplings are a popular yet under-capitalised segment in the aftermarket. • BGA has launched 60 viscous fan coupling references with plans to introduce 20 more throughout 2016. • The range covers 94% of the UK car parc fitted with couplings across 700 lines of application, including European and Asian makes and LCVs, providing the most comprehensive portfolio among UK suppliers. • The competitively priced parts undergo thorough testing against OE parts to offer excellent quality and performance. • All parts available from FPS on same/next-day basis. Speak to your local FPS representative for more information.

PUTTING SAFETY FIRST Speaking to VITAL NEWS, TRW leads the way with the recent ECE R90 Regulation mandating the quality of replacement brake discs.

3

an

or

In November 2014, it became mandatory for brake discs on all heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs), including buses and trailers, manufactured and sold across Europe, to meet the minimum standards outlined in the ECE R90 legislation. With effect from November 2016, this rule will be applicable to CV drums plus passenger car discs and drums. ECE Regulation 90 – abbreviated ECE R90 – specifies the design, construction, performance requirements and test protocols for automotive replacement parts.

ty

REGULATION

0 m il e s w a

rr

WHAT THIS MEANS ECE R90 governs aftermarket product quality. Originally introduced for brake linings, the regulation is being expanded to include brake discs and drums. This stipulates the deviation characteristics on a replacement part to within a prescribed tolerance (15%) of the OE part it intends to replace. It sets a minimum level for product strength and demands routine measurement of key performance parameters during production, ensuring conformity with original testing.

Adherence to any form of certification involves a great deal of preparation, investment and commitment. TRW works closely with industry bodies to encourage Governments to enforce stricter road safety targets and introduce more robust and widespread quality standards. TRW itself is one of the few aftermarket manufacturers to have its own dynamometer capabilities, allowing for first-hand process control, instead of relying on third party testing facilities.

The regulation is applicable to products manufactured and sold throughout the European Union and non-European countries that have adopted ECE Regulations. ADVANTAGE TRW Provided they are universally enforced and policed, ECE R90 will make it much harder for sub-standard and counterfeit products to reach the market and compromise driver safety. TRW is among the global leaders in the design, manufacture and supply of braking components, systems and technologies and has been an active member of the group leading the enforcement of these regulations, intended to improve road and automotive safety.

By setting its internal specification to exceed legislation, TRW is already at the helm of ECE R90 with its comprehensive range of 1,300 OE quality brake discs; as it was in 1999, when R90 was introduced for brake pads and shoes. TRW also offers the Perfect Match 3 year/36,000 mile warranty to installers using both the TRW pads and discs together; this requires validation by registering at TRW’s website.

MORE IN STORE Global road safety necessitates that all components within a vehicle are governed by adequate safety and quality guidelines. As a firm advocate of mass communication of the safety message through its campaigns, TRW is actively urging for the minimum quality standards to become the norm across the whole range of safety critical automotive parts. FPS stocks the extensive range of ECE R90 compliant premium brake discs from TRW, available for same and next-day delivery.

The ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ on the Rolls Royce is worth over £26 million: that’s the additional amount BMW paid on buying Rolls Royce in 2002, to manufacture the cars with the winged lady on the front.

The symbol of Toyota is not merely a ‘T’: The two overlapping ovals in the centre represent the relationship and trust between the company and its customers; the encircling oval signifies Toyota’s global expansion and endless opportunities ahead. The logo also forms a steering wheel, representing the car itself.

Lamborghini Murciélago is the real Batmobile: Named after a fighting bull and driven by Bruce Wayne in Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Murciélago in Spanish literally translates to ‘bat’.

Daniel Craig has a lifelong access to Aston Martin cars: For his role as James Bond, he can now take any Aston Martin from the factory for the rest of his life.

Lamborghini initially manufactured tractors: and began producing cars after Ferruccio Lamborghini was rebuked by Enzo Ferrari, when the former took his 250GT to get its clutch replaced, and proposed the idea of a better clutch.

Aston Martin has had 11 different owners: and is currently held by a conglomerate, including Ford Motors.

The name of the Lamborghini ‘Countach’ is inspired from a cuss word: When a young designer proposed the prototype, his senior yelled so, for the design was something that had never been seen before. While there is no exact translation in English, it roughly converts to “Holy s***!”.

The Silver Arrow was initially grey: The white paint and putty on the W25 had to be scraped off, in order to meet the weight regulations. The car was scraped down to its metal body and then sold, paving the way for the idea of the Mercedes Silver Arrow.

SAVE THE TROUBLE VITAL NEWS speaks to FEDERAL-MOGUL to learn about dirt contamination in engines, its identification and ways to counter it.

Abrasive dirt is the single biggest cause of engine failure and can damage pistons, piston rings, cylinder bores, crankshafts, bearings, valves, oil seals, the oil pump and the camshaft. Scratched and worn surfaces or surfaces that look as if they have been sandblasted or rubbed down are two identifiable signs of dirt contamination.

ROOT OF THE PROBLEM There are four main sources of dirt contamination:

1. Debris from normal wear and tear Much of this kind of debris is trapped by the oil filter and is removed from the engine during the scheduled oil and filter change. In a wellmaintained engine, this kind of dirt rarely causes problems.

2. Dirt from the road Although regular scheduled servicing with replacement of air and lubricating oil filters will remove most of this dirt, it is recommended to check the connections between the filters and the engine too. This helps prevent the damaged connection from allowing air that may contain dirt to bypass the filter and be drawn into the engine. Filters in the fuel breathing and vacuum systems should also be checked as per the vehicle manufacturer’s schedule. Furthermore, dirt entering the engine via the air intake or with contaminated oil can do the most damage to the compression rings and upper ring lands.

4. Dirty oil The lubricating oil can get contaminated if kept in a bulk store and then carried to the engine in a dirty container. This kind of contamination usually damages the crankcase components and lower portion of the pistons, whilst leaving the piston upper lands relatively untouched.

PREVENTION, NOT CURE A contaminated engine must be thoroughly cleaned and damaged parts re-machined or replaced. A better solution is to prevent the contamination occurring in the first place. Steps to ensure contamination doesn’t happen again include:

• Adhering to the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules and procedures, especially for replacing air and lubricating oil filters • Maintaining a scrupulously clean engine assembly bench • Thorough removal of all re-boring and crankshaft grinding debris • Storing and transporting lubricating oil in spotlessly clean containers Following these procedures and practices substantially reduces the likelihood of an engine being contaminated by foreign particles, to an extent where it could cause serious problems or damage. This will not only keep end-users happy and save workshops the time and trouble but could also spare them the potential professional embarrassment over competence.

3. Built-in dirt A clear indication of existing or residual dirt in the oil galleries is when the crankshaft bearings are scratched or pockmarked while the other components show less damage. The engine can also be contaminated if the re-boring or crankshaft grinding debris is not thoroughly removed. Care should also be taken to keep the engine assembly bench spotlessly clean when parts are lubricated before assembly or they may pick up dirt, which will then be assembled into the engine. Another clear indication of built-in dirt is when the bearing backs are marked by dirt particles compressed between the crankshaft bearings and their housings as it could not have got past the bearing after assembly.

A CLEAR

VITAL NEWS offers information on the importance of a fully with feedback from CHAMPION, The wiper blades season is here – heavy rain, road spray, snow and ice all result in poor visibility. This is when drivers’ thoughts – and eyes – are focussed on the problems that come with poor visibility which, according to Government figures, is the cause of one in ten UK road accidents. So it’s clearly time to make sure you are stocking the best range of wiping products.

WIPER MOTORS As the UK market grows and new wiper motor technology comes to market, it makes sense for motor factors to consider the strong commercial opportunities of selling replacement wiper motors. Wiper motors are known to fail for numerous reasons, such as:

• High levels of corrosion: as it is positioned below the windscreen, water can collect around the motor • Lack of use: can cause grease to set and harden inside the motor • Heavy loading: when drivers attempt to clear snow and ice from the windscreen More than 66% of wiper motor sales go via the main dealer*, leaving a significant opportunity for the independent aftermarket, making wiper motors a popular product during a harsh winter season. *Source: Valeo

VALEO Valeo believes its range of OE wiper motors for the aftermarket presents a significant opportunity for motor factors. One in three vehicles in the UK are equipped with a Valeo wiper motor, the three most common are:

• Continually rotating motors operate a wiper arm in a 360° circular motion, with the reversing action produced by the linkage mechanism. • Single reversible motors drive the wiper arm in a clockwise and anti-clockwise arc and the linkage design translates this movement into the sweep of the two wipers. • The new dual reversible technology presents increased opportunity for motor factors; as it operates a single blade and arm directly, a motor is required for each individual wiper blade. The advantage of this technology is that linkages are no longer required.

FPS’ multi-branded offering covers wiper motors from Valeo, Magneti, febi, Blue Print and Vemo, which sit alongside wiper blades and arms from Champion, Michelin, Pearl, febi, Blue Print and Vaico; a range of ‘dealer only’ parts also features within the wiping category. Having a strong supplier base means FPS can provide healthy tips from the experts on ways to improve sales: Valeo has recently added 11 new references to its expanding range of wiper motors, increasing the total part count to 120 wiper motors; all of which come from Valeo’s OE production lines. Valeo’s new rear wiper motor references cover Audi A1, A4, A6, S4, RS4 Quattro, Q5 and SQ5; Seat Exeo Sportourer and Ibiza IV; VW Caddy III, IV and Touareg II and Porsche Cayenne.

Benefits:

• Like-for-like replacement guarantees 100% fitting accuracy • Minimised risk of incorrect mounting OE quality assurance All Valeo wiper motors undergo rigorous testing and various factors, like the measurement and monitoring of wiping angle, power, voltage and speed are considered. Tests are also carried out in pre-defined climate profiles, such as winter and humid temperatures, to guarantee optimal performance during varied weather conditions.

MAGNETI MARELLI The Magneti Marelli wiper motors range that was once focused only on Fiat Group applications is much wider nowadays and includes products for Citroën, Ford, Renault, Seat, Skoda, VAG, Vauxhall and Volvo.

Benefits:

• Produced to the exacting standards of European vehicle manufacturers • OE quality, perfectly interchangeable from the original • High resistance to harsh weather conditions The RHD range is made of 122 references, integrating front and back wiper motors.

When replacing wiper motors, fitters should check for wear and damage in the wiper linkage if a continually rotating or single reversible system is in use. It is also recommended that the blades are changed at the same time.

functioning wiper system and the business it generates, MICHELIN, VALEO and MAGNETI. WIPER BLADES Reduced visibility accounts for 42% of all collisions and bad weather increases the likelihood of an accident significantly. Like any mechanical product, wiper blades wear out with time but their replacement is often overlooked, compromising driver, passenger and vehicle safety. Most people fail to realise that wiper blades are considered a core safety product; in fact up to 40% of vehicles on the road at any given time need a wiper blade replacement.

MICHELIN Studies show that 7 out of 10 consumers take the recommendation of a reseller and replace wiper blades when the need arises. It is therefore important to educate customers on the condition of their wiper blades, which improves sales, profits and most importantly, their safety. It’s worth remembering that not all blades are created equal and quality should be a dominant factor when choosing the right blade. The Michelin® Stealth® Hybrid Blade is an advanced wiper blade and was awarded the Auto Express product of the year 2014 stamp due to its several high tech features, enabling a clear wipe. Compared to traditional or ‘beam’ wiper blades, Stealth blades maintain optimum contact for improved visibility.

Benefits:

• ‘Smart’ design evenly disperses wiper pressure outward across the entire blade • Actively responds to the windscreen’s shape, offering consistent wiping performance • Soft cover gives blade protection from extreme weather and debris • Patented EZ-LOK connector system eases the process of removal and installation

CHAMPION With 20 million blades sold every year in the UK and projected sales due to rise further, Champion offers a premium range of wiper blades that delivers quality and enhanced margin opportunities. The Aerovantage® OE quality flat, conventional and hybrid blades provide almost complete coverage of the European vehicle parc and reaches nearly 95% of the fast-growing flat-blade market; this type of blade alone accounts for 40% of cars in the UK. Flat blades are now available as singles and also in a programme of 80 different kits, all matching OE specifications.

Benefits:

• Aerodynamic design reduces wind lift and improves water clearance • Unique low friction rubber formulation ensures screen contact and low noise performance even in extreme temperatures Standard blades fit 99% of cars with traditional hook-fitting wipers, offer extended service life and increased abrasion resistance along with reduced noise, lateral movement and judder. Hybrid blades combine the features of both flat and standard blades and include an aerodynamic spoiler for less lift and enhanced water clearance. This type of blade is fitted as OE on many Asian and some US and European marques. The latest wiper kits launched continue to extend the Champion blade coverage, including some of the most recent models for example the Nissan Pulsar (10/2014), Renault Twingo (09/2014), VW Passat Saloon and Variant (08/2014) and Ford Mondeo V (09/2014).

SUMMARY

Experts recommend checking blades for wear every six months and replacing, if damaged or worn.

• Multi-branded same/next-day offering from FPS to aid winter sales. • Wiper motors range includes Valeo, Magneti, febi, Blue Print and Vemo. • Wiper blades and arms from Champion, Michelin, Pearl, febi, Blue Print and Vaico. • Regular new-to-range developments provided across brands. • POS support and marketing collateral also available upon request.

QUALITY DRIVES BOGE reinstates the need to rely on its OE quality replacement shock absorbers and elaborates on its new Sensitive Damping Control technology. Shock absorbers play a critical role in the safety of the vehicle and studies reveal that an average car would go through at least one set of replacement shocks during its lifetime. Over time, shocks absorbers deteriorate owing to several factors, such as:

• • • •

Road unevenness like potholes and ground waves Damage of the piston by salt residue, stones and water General wear and tear Old or worn/damaged repair kits (bump stops) or missing protective gaiters

These can lead to common faults in the shock absorber and mounting, such as:

• Oil leaks: while a ‘misting’ of oil on the outer tube is normal, larger volumes indicate a failing piston rod seal • Worn mountings: a compliant rubber-to-metal component, mountings prevent the transfer of damping and suspension forces from transferring to the cabin and a deteriorated part makes this more prevalent A worn shock absorber could reduce cornering stability during sudden evasive manoeuvres, increase the risk of aquaplaning, increase stopping distance by 2 to 3 metres (at 50mph) and reduce traction considerably. The aim in shock absorber replacement should be to restore the vehicle to its original operating characteristics, while giving due consideration to other suspension components which might need replacing at the same time.

WHAT’S NEW? A major challenge in the automotive industry is achieving greater fuel efficiency with enhancements to manufacturing techniques; Boge contributes towards these targets by manufacturing shock absorbers with lightweight materials, such as aluminium housings, which help in reducing the overall weight on some vehicle applications.

TECHNOLOGY INSIDE Sensitive Damping Control (SDC) is a self-contained damping system using two valves to distribute the damping characteristics, which is used on numerous Boge shock absorbers. While one of the valves is fixed to the piston rod and continuously dampens motion, the second valve is suspended between two springs which allows for a certain amount of play and only works when extra damping force is required. At full stroke, the movable valve also contributes to the overall valve performance in addition to the first and thus increases the damping for the vehicle body and axle, increasing driver comfort and safety.

Sensitive Damping Control operating principle

RELY ON BOGE FPS offers an extensive portfolio of Boge shock absorbers, across all major vehicle manufacturers on the UK roads. The OE quality of Boge shock absorbers enables simple replacement with precision parts and assures the end-user of the quality, comfort and durability of the original factory specification.

Benefits:

• Tested alongside other steering and suspension components in the vehicle during the development stage, enabling better fit and performance • Unlike a low–priced option, the OE quality and precision-manufactured parts assure that safety critical systems (ABS, electronic steering, ESP, to name a few) within the vehicle will not be compromised FPS also stocks the Boge shock absorber service kit, to complement many applications in range that need them. The service kit comprises a spring assister or bump stop and a gaiter that protects the shock absorber piston rod from road debris.

KEEP THAT ENGINE ALIVE! VITAL NEWS assesses the performance enhancing values of Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer from LUCAS OIL.

FPS has recently added Lucas Oil to its maintenance portfolio – the largest additive brand in both the automotive and heavy equipment sectors in the US and now firmly established in the UK. Founded in the US by Forrest Lucas in 1989, Lucas Oil is one of the world's largest manufacturers of engine lubricants, additives and workshop greases. The product ranges are designed to exceed the highest vehicle manufacturer specification levels with options available for most applications in the car, motorcycle, truck, bus, agricultural and marine sectors. Many of the additives from Lucas Oil are specified and used in high performance vehicles, which has helped Lucas Oil build a reputation with garage mechanics through to motorsport engineers. With a strong American heritage style branding and competitive price points, Lucas Oil has a clear advantage when competing in a busy sector. Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer is one of the most highly rated performance enhancing products manufactured by Lucas Oil. In recent years, its success in protecting engines under the most extreme operating conditions has made it one of the most sought after products, both in the UK and US markets.

FEATURES The specially formulated blend of premium oils and a variety of petroleum-extracted additives allows the product to meet several needs within engines, manual gearboxes or differentials, in nearly all vehicle types. The additives are designed to leave a film that prolongs protection for moving parts, long after the main lubricant has drained into the sump. Since it is pure petroleum based, it can safely blend with all other automotive lubricants, even synthetics, ATF and mineral oil.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 41

Benefits:

• Eliminates dry starts and resists thermal breakdown for total protection in new engines • Stops smoking, knocking and oil consumption in older engines • Protects against wear, leaks, heat, noise and hard shifting in manual transmission and differentials • Adds lubricity for more MPG • Raises oil pressure and viscosity, increasing oil life by up to 50% • Lowers oil temperatures • Will not void vehicle warranties Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer is one of the standard components in every Lucas Oil engine oil and gear oil product, so existing Lucas Oil users need not add it to their engines, gearboxes or differentials. Its extra engine protection qualities make it a sensible addition to any nonLucas Oil branded oil, even those supplied in new cars.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer protects against rust and corrosion caused by periods of non-use, making it ideal for vehicles used occasionally, such as boats, motorhomes and classic cars. The product can also be used to correct conditions in poorly performing gear boxes and open gears and makes an ideal assembly lubricant. The product is available in 2 sizes – 946ml (part number 10001A) and 3.79 litres (part number 10002C). Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer and other products from the Lucas Oil range are available from FPS on same/next-day delivery.
