DEAR CUSTOMER, Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News.

I write this just after the election, a bit of a surprise finish and the end of one spell of uncertainty, of course to be followed by different uncertainties – this time around Europe concerning a possible Grexit and also the EU referendum, probably sometime next year. Meanwhile, it remains business as usual for FPS as we continue to invest in new product lines and services with our key partners.

Our cover feature showcases FPS’ latest partner Bosch – a credible Tier 1 offering that makes our premium engine management portfolio even stronger.

With Bosch’s OE pedigree and Cambiare as a strong support, we aim to provide a market-leading package to you with an everincreasing range and application coverage.

This issue also sheds light on some of the latest developments we have made to improve our services, be it the HGV platform that presents a single umbrella covering multiple brands for heavy duty vehicles or the exclusive Pre-1980s catalogue on the F:Drive giving you access to parts for veteran vehicles. NEW BGA TIMING CHAIN KIT BGA has introduced a new timing chain kit – part number TC0110K – that fits Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen 2.0 Petrol engines.

The OE chain on these engines is known to jump several teeth at around 40,000 miles, damaging it and the tensioner, when the water pump seizes. Unless the chain and tensioner are replaced, timing the camshafts back up at top dead centre becomes very difficult and the car will struggle at low revs and in reverse.

The OE tensioner is also known to fail if service intervals are not followed as dirty oil can block the oil ways and prevent the tensioner working correctly.

This can also lead to the engine losing timing.

IGNITION COILS A faulty ignition coil can result in failure to start a vehicle, stalling, misfires and backfires, all causing damage to the catalytic converter. ENGINE MANAGEMENT DECODED The engine management system has grown into an integral part of the modern vehicle and consists of numerous components, all co-dependent and essential to the proper functioning of the engine.

Being the core innovator and developer of engine management systems, Bosch tests the parts it manufactures to the same standards as those demanded by the vehicle manufacturers. This in turn guarantees a prolonged service life and genuine quality on replacement parts.

Engine management parts carry an added complexity of diagnosing faults and so a proper understanding of repair and replacement instructions is extremely necessary to make the most of any business opportunity.

FUEL LINE Fuel pumps are becoming more modular these days and they now contain a large number of components within a single housing, making it even more important to replace them with quality parts.

Faulty fuel pumps can cause loss of engine power at high speeds or under heavy loads and lead to loud noise from the pump. These can cause ignition problems as well as failure to start the vehicle.

Whereas for fuel injectors, the main reasons for wear or failure are contamination of the fuel system and corrosion due to moisture in the fuel. Choosing a Bosch replacement reduces rough running caused by non-uniform spray dynamics.

LAMBDA SENSORS Lambda sensors help the engine run efficiently while producing fewer emissions by relaying information about the oxygen content of exhaust gases.

A worn sensor can cause unacceptable emissions, affect performance and lead to the damage of the catalytic converter. These precision-made parts should therefore always be replaced with a high quality sensor.

AIR MASS SENSORS The air mass sensor is used to determine the volume of air being delivered to the engine. This signal allows the ECU to adapt the fuel injection accordingly. In modern diesel applications, the air mass sensor is additionally required to control and monitor the EGR flow rate.

Poor quality air mass sensors can dramatically impact a vehicle’s drivability, resulting in flat spotting, backfire, poor acceleration and excessive emissions. Bosch air mass sensors are built to the exacting specifications as required for such a sensitive measuring device.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX? The subject of brake pad quality certainly causes a great deal of friction in the market.

Vital News takes a close look at what buyers can expect to unwrap with BRAYMANN. Poor roads and a consistent rise in the UK’s ageing car parc have resulted in a gradual rise in the sale of friction parts. Brake pads are safety-critical and so the quality and durability of replacement parts need to be optimum and motor factors need to be sure of what they are selling to their customers. With numerous brands crowding the market, it is difficult to ascertain the quality of a pad until it is fitted and the vehicle driven, making it all the more necessary to rely on a sound brand.

Underlayer: same as OE

AS GOOD AS OE Braymann brake pads are composed of a mix of friction materials that are copper, asbestos, lead and antimony free. Furthermore, the pad material contains only 10-20% ferrous metals, significantly reducing the harshness of the pads.

HGV: EASIER TO SEE FPS delivers heavy duty business to motor factors with a new platform and improved cataloguing functions for heavy goods vehicles (HGV). VITAL NEWS finds out more.

Continuing with ongoing developments to offer more comprehensive coverage to the independent aftermarket, FPS recently created a dedicated HGV platform on the F:Drive to highlight all things HGVrelated in its product portfolio.

As the aftermarket is seeing a rise in the number of HGVs with expiring service contracts, the demand for HGV parts has increased as well, opening up new revenue stream opportunities. For the majority of fleet customers, time spent off the road means lost revenue and so the FPS HGV offering helps to reduce downtime.

HGV CATALOGUING: ONE-STOP SHOP WINDOW To support its growing HGV parts portfolio and ease parts selection, FPS has created a new online HGV catalogue search on the F:Drive.

The new development – HGV vehicle lookup – provides over 26,000 additional HGV vehicle applications and includes trucks, trailers, tractors and specialist vehicles.

HGV PLATFORM FPS recognised the need to address the difficulty of obtaining replacement parts from various sources for HGVs. In late April 2015, FPS launched a common platform for multiple brands with HGV suitability, covering a number of popular applications and brands which include Gates, Remy, SogefiPro and Federal Mogul. GOES FULL THROTTLE VITAL NEWS learns how the independent aftermarket stands to benefit from the extension of the CAMBIARE throttle body range.

The throttle body, which forms part of the engine’s air intake system, regulates the amount of air flowing through it. Usually located between the air filter box and the intake manifold, the throttle body uses a large metal plate – referred to as the ‘butterfly valve’– to control the intake of air. The valve opens when the accelerator pedal is depressed and allows more air into the system. Without the oxygen content in the intake air, the fuel would not burn and therefore power would not be generated since combustion cannot take place.

Though the replacement of throttle bodies is a pretty straightforward exercise, it is essential to rely on quality parts such as Cambiare, as these assure the factor and installer of low failure rates and warranty returns.

Electronic systems, used in more modern applications, are a little more complicated. They use a small motor & gear system to operate the valve and require a position sensor to relay throttle angle to the ECU. The gears too can wear, reducing or stopping throttle response and the position sensors can stop sending important information to the ECU and illuminate the engine management light.

Common symptoms to look out for in a faulty throttle body:

MECHANISM AND COMMON FAULTS Throttle bodies operate either mechanically by cable & linkage set-ups or fully electronically.

In a mechanical linkage system, commonly used in older vehicles, throttle bodies are susceptible to wear; this can cause stalling and reduce or even cease throttle response completely.

RECOMMENDATION Sometimes, base idle settings may need to be reset or adjusted after replacement of throttle bodies, depending on application. KEEPS TRANSMISSION CLEAN VITAL NEWS examines the reasons behind transmission filter failure and the high quality replacement solutions offered by VAICO®.

Although transmission filters are designed to keep the transmission fluid clean, every transmission system will eventually accumulate debris from normal wear and tear inside the gearbox; even ‘lifetime oils’ are not exempt from this problem. It is vital that the transmission fluid is kept clean so that the valve body and other key components do not become clogged, making them inoperable.

BURNING SMELL OR SMOKE In extreme cases, a burning smell may occur when the transmission filter has become blocked with particles that it is designed to limit. Smoke can also be emitted from the engine as a result of blocked particles.

RECOMMENDATION By regularly replacing the transmission filter or filter kit, the life span of the transmission system can be extended. VAICO® recommends checking the transmission fluid level and filter cleanliness regularly as well as replacing the filter at regular intervals, generally between 5 to 6 years or a mileage of between 40,000 to 60,000 miles.

COMMON FAULTS AND REPLACEMENT Whilst the filter keeps contaminants out of the transmission fluid, there are a number of problems that can arise with the filter which reduces its ability to do its job properly. VAICO® advises that being aware of the signs to look out for will help in assessing when it is necessary to undertake a repair or replacement.

CONTAMINATION Contamination of the filter as a result of material wear and dirt ingress can result in clogging of the control unit. If the filter cannot do its job properly, the transmission fluid will reach the point where it is too dirty to perform efficiently and can lead to gear failure.

NOISE Rattling can occur due to defects within the transmission system; in this instance fasteners may need tightening or filters and seals may need replacing. Contamination of the filter can also cause noise; if the filter is contaminated, it should be replaced.

Column switches have been growing in popularity with parts distributors as they are now a MoT requirement. The range has been a key focus for Valeo at a number of events this year. Column switches are high value products with excellent revenue potential for motor factors and garage technicians alike. A scan tool can be used to obtain this data in degrees. The SAS is located in a sensor cluster in the steering column.

CLOCKSPRING The clockspring for single and combined switches supports the connection between the steering wheel functions and the vehicle’s electrical system; it is generally located between the steering wheel and the steering column.

Depending on the vehicle’s specification, a clockspring can be either fully integrated on a complete module, or offered as a single unit with or without the SAS. The Valeo range is compatible with the main security systems (ESP and airbag) and is easy to fit without electronic re-initialisation or specific tools.

FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT All column switches should be replaced like for like, they cannot be retrofitted.

Common reasons for a column switch failure are:

• Electrical malfunction • Environmental stress such as temperature variations and UV radiation • Connection failure • Mechanical pressure by the driver unnecessarily forcing the switches, causing them to snap Replacement is simple and takes less than an hour.

FIRST LINE explains to VITAL NEWS how its turbo hoses are a perfect substitute to ‘dealer only’ parts and urges motor factors to regularly update customers with new product info.

First Line introduced its range of turbo hoses in 2014 in order to provide the independent aftermarket with an alternative to the franchised dealers. The range now includes around 500 part numbers, covering many popular European and Asian applications.

The complete programme includes several different types of hoses.

Although the majority are turbo hoses, the portfolio also includes air filter hoses, turbo oil feed or return hoses and emission control or crankcase breather hoses.

FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT As with any rubber product, the material naturally degrades over time. Furthermore, turbo hoses are subject to high levels of stress, which along with contamination from oil and other common automotive chemicals means they will eventually fail and need replacing.

It is important to ascertain if there are any additional factors that may have contributed to the failure. Care should be taken in particular, while installing a new turbo, that the old hoses are checked and replaced, where necessary.

This will minimise the risk of contamination and help avoid premature failure.

Another vital area when replacing any hose is the connector. First Line hoses are always supplied with OE specification connectors, where standard.

MATERIAL MATTERS First Line turbo hoses are manufactured to the same high specifications, using the same material, as the original part. Various factors dictate the choice of material used. Some of them are:

• NBR/Nitrile: very popular in automotive applications due to its high resistance to petroleum products and ability to operate in medium to high temperatures.

• AEM/Ethylene Acrylic: excellent heat-aging resistance and can also operate in medium to high temperature conditions.

• EPDM/Ethylene-Propylene: provides increased strength and excellent extreme temperature resistance.

• VMQ/Silicone (Fluorosilicone): delivers unparalleled temperature and compression set resistance and is therefore used in high temperature/pressure applications i.e. for vehicles with very high induction charge (boost) pressures.

Turbo hoses generally operate at increased air pressures, so reinforcement fibres, such as polyester, Kevlar and aramid are added to the walls of the hose during their construction, depending on the specification of the OE part.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the dual mass flywheel (DMF), LuK explains the past, technology to VITAL NEWS and the launch of an app to aid installers.

LuK, one of the largest suppliers of OE clutches to the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers (VMs), and part of the Schaeffler Group, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the DMF as well as the production of the 100 millionth unit at the LuK factory in Bühl, Germany.

Brainchild of LuK engineer Dr. Wolfgang Reik, the first DMF to be used in mass production was fitted to a BMW in 1985 and was closely followed by MercedesBenz, Vauxhall and Porsche. The nineties saw most VMs following suit and by 1994, all powertrains began featuring DMFs, making it a mainstream product rather than one just for high-end or luxury cars.

There are currently 22 million DMF-equipped vehicles on the UK roads and the number is set to rise, meaning a steady demand for DMFs as an aftermarket replacement solution. FPS stocks over 440 parts from the LuK DMF range, available same or next-day, offering replacement for such popular applications as Vauxhall Astra V (2005>), Audi A3 (2003>) and Ford Focus II (2004>).

DMF: EARLY DEVELOPMENTS The earliest DMFs had arc springs the size of a conventional clutch torsion damper, albeit with the ‘split masses’ system. Simply put, while one half of the flywheel was attached to the engine crankshaft, the other was effectively attached to the gearbox and driveline through the clutch, lowering its resonance frequency. Soon enough however, damper capacity was increased five-fold by expanding the size of the arc springs and pushing them out to the larger outer diameter of the DMF.

Increasingly tighter emission regulations and fuel prices necessitated further innovations in engine damping to absorb the harsh vibration levels, previously tamed by the weight of the vehicle itself.

While the injection of fuel, both petrol and diesel, has advanced in precision over recent years, the efficiency of an engine can only be increased to a certain limit.

Modern, lighter engines produce more torque and are driven at very low engine speeds in order to improve fuel economy and this created a need for DMFs to evolve as well.

LuK integrated the centrifugal pendulum absorber (CPA) with its existing DMF to create a speed-adaptive mass damper that enables the full performance potential of modern drive systems to be exploited, without sacrificing comfort. A tried and tested aircraft engine technology, the inclusion of CPA tech into LuK’s DMF design allows the vehicle to be driven around comfortably at only 1000 rpm in top gear, leading to a possible 21% improvement in fuel economy. Currently, the LuK range includes 7 DMFs with CPA. Benefits of a DMF with CPA compared to conventional systems include:

• Smoother running: reduces vibrations caused by the rotational irregularity of the crankshaft • Lower fuel consumption: enabled by the capability to drive at lower engine speeds

After 30 years of success, the DMF continues to be the most effective engineering solution for controlling drivetrain vibration levels and is the preferred original fitment for VMs.

COMMON FAULTS AND REPLACEMENT Although wear and tear remains one of the most common causes for DMF failure, the following can have an adverse effect on the part:

Engine misfires not rectified ‘Chipped’ ECUs promising to increase power or torque Overloaded vehicles or those towing excessive weight Driving style

Some brands produce conversion kits to replace the originally fitted DMF and because they have limited vibration absorbing capabilities, the weight of the solid flywheel has to be increased. Whilst the extra weight may help with the vibration, it introduces a factor beyond the engine’s tested tolerances and specifications.

Typical reports of post-conversion failures can include:

• Snapped crankshafts • MOT failure due to excessive smoke • Fork & slave cylinder damage

• Sheared driveshafts • Sheared release bearing • Increased fuel consumption

It is therefore recommended to always replace a damaged DMF with an OE quality replacement and LuK, being the original fitment in most vehicles, offers the complete solution.

To accurately check if a DMF needs replacement, installers need to be aware of the correct operating tolerances and bolt torque settings that are unique to each application. This information is now accessible on the app simply by entering the part number. This instantly shows all the data required, before carrying out a professional repair.

Motor factors should advise installers to download the app to be able to access vital information. In-built links to both REPXPERT and the Schaeffler UK technical hotline (08457 001100) make the app even more helpful when seeking expert advice.

WITNESS ON BOARD VITAL NEWS reviews the latest dashboard camera from WINPLUS® – the YADA® Dash Road Cam HD – and the fantastic opportunity it presents for retailers.

I highlighted the threats and opportunities of telematics in the January issue of Vital News. We feel that creating an inter-operable and secure telematics platform for connected vehicles that incorporates state-of-the-art technology will help curb the competition generated by closed proprietary systems, especially on modern vehicles; IAAF is working hard to ensure this.

Currently, independent operators such as repairers, road patrols and leasing companies do not get the same wireless access to the vehicle’s technical data as vehicle manufacturers (VMs) do. This allows VMs to choose which companies can eventually receive the data and under what conditions and timescales. VMs can also regulate the services allowed to be offered to consumers – thereby holding an exclusive control over their vehicles’ data.

The IAAF has been highlighting these issues and driving forward with a very aggressive agenda to open up opportunities that add value to your business. We plan to stress on these threats and opportunities at various events and network meetings and hope to involve suppliers, distributors and garages as part of our ongoing drive to recruit new members and raise awareness in the independent aftermarket.
