Augusta students take trip through the solar system Augusta elementary school students took a trip through the solar system last week with the assistance of the COSI-on-Wheels program. Theme for the daylong event was Astounding Astronomy and included an interactive assembly with students and then hands-on learning. The assembly introduced students to the solar system, exploring each planet and its characteristics and included students participating in various activities. Students then explored various astronomical concepts at stations set up around the perimeter of the gym. They explored the size and

distance between the planets, electromagnetic spectrum, the extreme cold of the outer planets and deep space as well as the fact that the earth is the only known planet to contain life. They enjoyed maneuvering a remote controlled vehicle that demonstrated how planets are explored by man, used interactive materials to identify constellations and watched the effect a difference in air pressure has on objects. Augusta staff and parents volunteered their time to assist with learning stations.
