Renowned artists perform free concerts at historic St. Louis Cathedral and St. Augustine Church; Celebration in the Oaks fills City Park with joy and laughter; NOLA ChristmasFest delights with ice skating and family fun; and candlelight caroling in Jackson Square brings the community together. There is rarely a “Silent Night” in New Orleans. Follow the trumpet music to Bourbon, Frenchmen and Fulton streets for authentic New Orleans music. Celebrate the New Year with us, and stay to watch the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome. As you celebrate the holiday season with your family, neighbors and friends, remember all that we have accomplished and are grateful for and use that to fuel you as we continue to move forward in 2020. To you and your loved ones, I wish you a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year. The energy of our city and her people is unmatched and the culture unparalleled. We invite you to experience every moment of it. Sincerely, CityMayorof New Orleans

Eve brought another Reveillon, usually shared among several families. This more elaborate meal featured eggnog, fancy pastries, meringues, sugar sculptures, and crystallized fruits. By late afternoon, families would return home to a light supper followed by a night of singing and dancing—with wine and whiskey for the gentlemen and cordials and liqueurs for the ladies.

In the late 1800s and the first decade or so of the 20th century, New Orleans’ Creole families celebrated Reveillon (derived from the French word reveiller, which means “to awaken”) twice during the holidays. The first Reveillon came after Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, when families returned from St. Louis Cathedral to break a daylong fast. This meal typically consisted of egg dishes, sweetbreads, and Creole specialties, such as daube glacé. It often ended with a cake filled with a fruit confection, dripping with wine or rum, and topped with whipped Newcream.Year’s
