Project: Transport House, large residential block

Value: 50million GBP

Scale: 149 units across, 8 storeys

Strategy: pre-cast system

Pre-cast system to reduce cost as less labour onsite and avoids combustible materials as building is higher than 18meters so has complex fire strategy.

Tasks:

-Assisting the coordination of elevations, panel joints and balconies to be as close to planning application design as possible. Experimenting with the decoration using brick bonds to conceal panel joints and vents. Bricks were not structural so able to do odd playful brick patterns.

-Detailing the prefabricated hung balconies.

- Designing stair cores in-accordance with building regulations, part M and part K , & adding 125mm half step to avoid complicated details around handrails.

- Drawing substation to demonstrate louvres meet UKPN requirements.

- Window schedule drawn earlier in project than usual as all windows will need to be ready to be inserted into the panels in factory,

Other projects: extensions and refurbishments to residential properties in Dulwich

Values range from: 500-700 thousand GBP Scale: small residential, extensions and refurbishments in Dulwich

To comply with the Dulwich Estate in addition to other legal bodies.

Tasks: - Electrical layouts. - Furniture layouts - Drainage layouts - Demolition & proposed drawings for Dulwich Estate - Sanitary-ware layouts

Project: drawings for prototype fire testing 3m cubes, made of the same wall build-up as existing projects, are constructed and then put in a furnace for analysis, the results are then submitted to lawyers to demonstrate the fire safety of existing developments.

Private residential: Electrical Layouts

CHANGES OF STATE 2021

From 1850-1996, at least 10 thousand women across the world, were imprisoned and forced to work in Magdalene laundry institutions, unpaid, subjected to severe psychological and physical maltreatment by the nuns. The church attempted to keep the injustice of the Magdalene Laundries a secret by demolishing and converting the laundry sites. My site is one of the last remaining untouched laundry sites, so I proposed to forensically reconstruct the laundry phenomenologically, serving as a memorial and museum.

The aim of my project was to educate visitors about the injustice thus preventing history repeating. The proposed memorial takes visitors on an experiential journey through the site, educating them about the forgotten local history.

The trajectory the visitor walks through the site is shown in purple, overlaid on the site plan. It is then unfolded into a linear path below, with the 16 storyboard images show the key experiences at each position along the trajectory. The distorted plan underneath was unfolded along the trajectory, showing the transitional spaces from when the visitor enters the site until they leave.

CHANGES

The laundry site is then theatrically steam cleaned. The performance and experience of the steam exposes and retells the history of the laundry site. To achieve the steamy atmospheres I designed a pump room and water towers. The water towers collect rainwater. The height of the towers was calculated to provide enough gravitational pressure so that the water sprays out the nozzles in a fine mist.

Women had their identity stripped from them when they arrived at the laundry, they were given a number instead of a name, their heads were shaved and their possessions taken away.

Physical model awarded the Design Engine prize. Watch the video journeying through my reconstruction model giving you a first person view of the steamy experiences inside the laundry.

CHANGES OF STATE 2021 I reconstructed the experience of the laundry based on evidence I found on the site. Evidence 1 Floor surface erosions caused by corrosive cleaning products, water damage and limescale, which built up over time from the piles of wet clothes. Evidence 2 Floor
materials, which gave clues as to the function of each room. Tiles in working laundry areas, wooden floors in drying rooms, compared to carpet in the nun's private quarters. This project is set in the future, when resources and space are scarce, such that building materials are unaffordable and there is nowhere left to memorialise the dead.

Inspired by the discovery of the vitrified (turned to glass) brain caused by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. I propose corpses should be vitrified and then assembled forming the mausoleum structure.

achieve vitrification, firstly, by harnessing the sun’s solar radiation using a magnifying lens and mirrors to ignite and vaporise the corpse. Then rapidly cooling it under the a designed waterfall.

STANIFORTH ARCHITECTS, LEICESTER 2019

I gained extensive experience in the residential sector, preparing & developing architectural drawings in compliance with UK planning & building regulations, with a primary focus on RIBA workstages one to four. I attended client meetings, site visits, conducted measured surveys, produced planning application drawings, setting out drawings, design & access statements & produced marketing drawings for estate agent brochures.

A sustainable approach to AC units, integrating passive ventilation & cooling. In the hot dry climate of my site, when the timber lattice envelope is wetted, the internal temperature of the building is reduced by utilizing evaporative cooling.

The urban mindfulness pavilion uses acoustics to create tranquil spaces in the busy city. Panels have a smooth side to reflect echoes between the cliff-face & a perforated side to absorb traffic noise.

LIGHTING & MOVEMENT 2017+

I became fascinated with lighting and movement because it captures the emotional intensity and energy of a space or event.

IMAGE 1 & 2

Long exposure photography with choreographed movement experimentation.

IMAGE 3

Spatial analysis of the film The Crying Games inspired by Tschumi’s Screenplays exploring the relationship between architecture and event.

IMAGE 4

Photomontage capturing my experience and mood while visiting Igualada Cemetery. I was nominated by the Dean of Architecture at Oxford Brookes to represent the University in the Speirs Major competition for my lighting design investigations.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH

I have discussed the following topics using my own qualitative data:

Isornamentationnecessarytocreatemeaningful architecture?Comparing Barcelona Cathedral and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

Whatmakesabuilding“ugly”?Assessing the aesthetics of energy infrastructure.

Isphysicalmodel-makingthebestmethodtocreate multisensorydesign?Analysing an architect's design process.

As seen in my research and design portfolio, I am passionate about phenomenology and innovative high quality material experimentation. Soon I hope to explore these interests further as part of a PhD.
