Exhibition Development To develop my initial research of artworks, I will create designs for an exhibition . I have decided to name my exhibition ‘Soleil’ as the main focus for my exhibition will be on artists and key works of art that are depicting landscapes around them that involve the sun and it’s effects e.g. colour and mood . . My aim is to analyse existing advertising material to inspire the creation of my own poster designs, booklet , tickets and a 3d digital exhibition/gallery design .
To advertise the Soleil exhibition I plan to develop ideas for a poster . I have began to look at a range of exhibition / show posters that show different artistic effects that I could approach when creating my poster. I have chose three posters to analyse as they both show bold color which will be a major focus in my exhibition .
The Royal Academy of Arts ; Painting the Modern Garden , Monet to Matisse, 2016 Simple , bold initial title in corner , gives a bold heading yet doesn't’t overpower or detract from the imagery on the poster.
Choice of colour for title and sub beading compliments the pink colours used in the Monet painting
Sponsors, logo of gallery
Example of existing poster The combination of the pink title colour and the blue/purple toned Monet painting creates a analogous colour scheme
Use of original artwork for background , relating to theme of exhibition and artists
Simple white font also works well and compliments against the background painting Smaller text for information , dates, website etc.
Analysis of formal elements of posters
Artistic background paint splats, watercolour effect with colour , digitally manipulated.
Block of text written in smaller text giving information on the exhibition , same colour as title , white stands out from background
Simple yet bold text that stands out from the colourful background and compliments colour palette Placed centrally and not overpowering the poster
Here the txt has been placed on the right hand side of the composition, possibly allowing the nature of the background to be exposed
Similar to the poster on the left , this design has used an artistic background of paint splats, running, smeared paint, although here it is much more organic and natural rather that digitally manipulated . It appears that the background could be a canvas Branding/ logos/ sponsorship included at the bottom of the poster , Again in the same uniform white colour
Bold graphic text , printed style , continued white text throughout the poster which works well with the broad colour palette used in the background graphics
Font Development To begin developing advertising material I have looked at a range of fonts such as these paint brush style fonts and more simplistic font styles that could be used in my advertising and would compliment the graphic designs I produce. Paintbrush effect fonts
Simplistic fonts
Recreating overlapping transparent font
Warm to cool toned
Warm toned gradient
To experiment further with possible font ideas I have looked at some posters and the font designs they have used . This ‘ All four one’ exhibition poster uses bold text in different transparent shades to create an overlapping effect with colour . There is a contrast between monotone / greyscale and the use of colour for the world ‘Four’.
Grayscale gradient
Clipping mask font using Photoshop
After looking existing fonts and recreating font styles from posters which cold be used in my advertising I have chosen to use this font as I like the simple brush effect. Also the style of the font is similar to a handwritten signature and fit’s the organic/artistic theme . To manipulate this font I have used the Photoshop clipping mask tool with examples of some paintings to create a filled effect . These would work well with a more minimalistic booklet or possibly ticket stubs but as my poster will already show elements of paintings and be colourful this may not be suitable for the poster
Existing Museum / Gallery logos As I am creating designs for an exhibition I have created a name for the fictional gallery , called the ‘Royal Arts Gallery’. Before I design my own logo for the gallery I have looked at existing museum and art gallery logos from all over the world which use different design styles such as using the initial(s) on their name , colourful graphics and simply using the name as the logo .
Logo Designs As an element of my development and advertising designs I have created possible logo ideas for the fictional gallery where my exhibition will be held . I have used some simple imagery and icons combined with initials and text and different colour palettes to create a range of logo ideas which I can easily manipulate to fit in with my poster, leaflet and ticket stubs.
ROYAL ARTS GALLERY
Colour variations I have narrowed my logo choices down to two possible logos which I think would compliment my advertising graphics well , I have also looked at variations of colours I could use .
Poster idea 1 - graphics design
To begin development for advertising material I have looked at secondary resources of posters and found this example below. I like how the imagery used is fragmented into strips and re assembled and distorted. I have recreated this style using self portraits of artists , painted In different styles such loose brushwork and fauvist style . I think this has worked well and I could develop this in Photoshop further by adding different effects
Imagery Manipulation- smudged effect For this idea I have just experimented with ways I could distort the image in Photoshop. I have looked at this graphics poster on the left which has distorted text . Here I have used the smudge and blurring tools to distort the edges of the image and bleed the paint outwards as if it was watercolor spreading . I think this could be taken further as I like the effect it has in some areas although I found it difficult to control the direction of the smudging and could have been more precise with the distortion . I like the effect the bleeding/smudged technique had given the imagery in areas as they create a distorted effect. Although in other areas the effect looks slightly un controlled and I would prefer a more refined style using different tools on Photoshop, for example different brush tools.
Imagery Manipulation 2- paint brush effect
Referring back to an exhibition poster I have previously analyzed I have looked at using a similar effect in my own poster designs ., For this design I have tried to replicated the brushed paint effect using a range of paint brush tools on Photoshop. I have chosen to use this effect as it directly related to my exhibition’s focus on painting and emphasizes the imagery I have chosen .
Poster design 1
For this first poster design using Photoshop I have stuck with my original imagery of the merged paintings to create a face and have used various paint brush tools to create a painted effects on the planes of the images , in a similar style to an existing poster which uses this painted effect . I have used a simple painted style font in white to compliment the colours of the graphics and have also included the gallery logo I have chosen and the location/date in the same colour .
10th-24th July 2017
Royal Arts Gallery , London
Final poster design For this poster design I have taken a more graphic approach using a combination of text and imagery . I have looked at this music style poster which uses an image of John Lennon and text which is digitally manipulated , the text emerges from the left hand side , filled with the image. I have decided to use my original collage image which was made my compiling segments of paintings . I have also decided to keep the paintbrush effect on the edges of the planes as it looks more refined rather than the original block edges . (Right ) is my final design for the poster I will use in my exhibition . Compared to my first poster idea I think the graphics used are much more sophisticated and refined. As there is a lot of dark space on the left hand side of the poster I would also be able to include a QR code that links to my booklet/ exhibition guide or a 3d Map .
Simple patterned background compliments the colourful imagery
Existing exhibition tickets
Photograph of artwork related to exhibition (lego bricks) compliments with the yellow colour used in graphic title Simple font used for date , location and other information High fashion photography from show/ exhibit included
Colourful graphic used for title of exhibition Bold logo in white and white text , contrasts from black background Use of red and white text against black co ordinates with the colours in the photograph`
Ticket stubs Front Here is my design for my ticket stubs for my exhibition . I have used the same imagery as my poster because they correspond well and I would like a continuous colour theme . I have included the title, date and a barcode on the front of the ticket and may include a QR code for the accompanying exhibition booklet Back
On the back of the ticket I have repeated the date , in a larger font and have included the gallery website for more information as well as social media links (fictional)
Tate Brancusi exhibition To accompany my exhibition design I aim to produce an exhibition leaflet showing the paintings featured in the exhibition . I have looked at this a5 sized leaflet by the Tate modern gallery advertising a Brancusi sculpture exhibit which features elements I would like to recreate in my own leaflet. The front cover is simple and has an image of Brancusi’s sculpture on a plain grey background with simple text in white to stand out from this background. The title of ‘ Brancusi the essence of things’ and the date are included underneath the the photograph In the top right hand corner of the cover the Tate logo has also been included in the same white colour as the title .
At the beginning of this booklet there is a two page spread for the Biography and relevant information on the artist ( left hand page) there is a large piece of text opposite a photograph of the artist .
Artist Biography page
Monochrome colour palette , plain white pages keep the style simplified. Also compliments the black and white photograph.
Large black and white photograph of artist on opposite page
Smaller passage of text / info on accompanying photograph
Main pages of booklet Throughout the booklet large black and white photographs of artists works are included along with information Quotes by Brancusi included The main pages in the booklet are split up into sections, describing the contents of each room in the exhibition
Titles for each section/ each room on top left of text
Black and white photograph of another work of art/ related works
Description of photographs
List of other exhibitions at the Tate modern
To end the booklet a large photograph of Brancusi at work has been included
List of exhibition opening days and hours
Small text on exhibition shop and cafÊ’s , I plan to include an exhibition shop in my 3d/virtual exhibition
Online links to website , social media ect
List of upcoming exhibitions at the Tate Britain
Floor Plan The Brancusi exhibitions floor plan is built up of 10 rooms connected to each other , with each room containing related works by Brancusi. For my exhibition I will include a floor plan at the back of my booklet with a link to a visual exhibition design showing views of the exhibition from a bird eye view , as well as view of each of the individual rooms , entrance and gift shop .
Swindon’s Museum and Art Gallery Interior – 2016 exhibition
Here are some photos of the exhibition room from at a trip to Swindon’s art gallery exhibition called ‘from where I’m standing ‘ in 2016 . The exhibition features work from local artists that have responded to other works of art which is displayed at the gallery . I have taken inspiration from their use of blank walls and minimal decoration and in the rooms to allow the paintings to be the centre of focus. The paintings and sculptures are spaced equally apart across the walls over a large room with 3 main sections . In my 3d exhibition design I have decided to have 5 small rooms connecting from an entrance to allow only two paintings in each room.
